JULY 2013

W

hen you live in paradise, it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else. The beaches, sand, palm trees and our own little slice of sunshine makes going outdoors a love for many of us. In the month of July, cookouts and barbecuing for Independence Day is a time-honored tradition, paired with fireworks and the gathering of family and friends. Each year, I go out to the river and watch the fireworks. The sounds of the children, spectators and visitors saying ‘ooooh’ and ‘aaaah’ as each firework lights up the night sky is heartwarming and makes me enjoy the beauty of a Florida summer. Then I swat a mosquito.

Enjoying the great outdoors WRITER/PRODUCTION COORDINATOR BRITTANY A. LLORENTE

Yes, our slice of heaven has its drawbacks, but we’ve learned to make the best of it. The amount of outdoor activities is bountiful for those of us in Florida. We have the extra added bonus of water and inland activities that give you every excuse to get off the couch and spend some time in the sun. On the water, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving are some of the favorite activities.

ON THE WATER By Brittany Llorente Foreveryoung@homtownnewsol.com

FORT PIERCE — There are few things better than the ocean air in your hair, the sand on the beach and the lulling sound of the waves crashing. When you’re a child, you make sand castles and collect seashells, when you’re older and want to do something at the beach, surfing may be the answer. Robert “Spunky” Strunk is the owner of Spunky’s Surf Shop in Fort Pierce. The flip-flop and board-short wearing surfer has toured beaches all over the world surfing the best waves out there (and some bad ones). His shop features surf boards of all shapes and sizes, from longboards to shortboards to gun boards and fish boards, it can be a little intimidating if you’re looking to start the exciting hobby. Thankfully, Spunky has sent many a surfer to meet the waves, ages anywhere from five to 70 years old.

July 2013

If you’ve never tried any of these activities on the water or are thinking of trying a new one, it may be the time to get out and try something new (Remember? It’s one of our New Year’s resolutions). You don’t need to buy a ton of equipment; in fact, most of the experts say you should rent before you buy to make sure you like the activity first. If you’re looking for activities on the mainland, golfing happens to be one of the most popular things to do. In Florida, there are 1,481 golf courses and ranges. So, there is likely one right around the corner from you, no matter where you live. Take a lesson and hit the course,

again, not buying until you’ve tried out the sport. This issue of Forever Young was inspired by the sun, the wonderful summer weather and the fun of Independence Day. Make sure you’re prepared for the outdoors. According to skincancer.org, sunscreen should be applied every two hours and have an SPF of 15 or higher. We here at Forever Young hope that you enjoy the rest of summer and explore the reasons that people from all over the world flock to our bit of paradise. As always, we welcome your questions, comments and concerns at ForeverYoung@hometownnewsol.co m.

Starting your endless summer

“The three main things for sizing someone for a board is age, weight and ability,” said Spunky. “Are they intermediate? Have they come back to it after raising a family? Are they older now?” Weight is the last aspect due to the buoyancy of the boards. “There’s an old saying, you can’t put 10 pounds of potatoes in a five pound sack,” Spunky said. “The better the board floats the easier it is for someone to catch the waves. If it’s not buoyant enough it burns up a lot of excess energy trying to catch the waves. It’s like driving a car with four underinflated tires.” At Spunky’s Surf Shop you can rent boards if you don’t want to make the fully financial commitment to surfing right away, and he will assist you in choosing a board that will work best for you. “You can rent boards here, we do instruction and lessons,” he said. “It’s most important to get a few lessons. You want to reduce the frustration factor and then it’s just like getting on a bike and peddling down

You’re going to fall off and knick your knees, get a little skinned up. The plus side to doing that while surfing is that you’re falling into water.” Surfing is for anyone of any age. “I had a 67-year-old gentleman

come in the other day to learn to surf,” Spunky said. “The oldest woman who wanted to learn was 70. You just use different boards like wider boards and thicker boards to make it more stable. Age is no excuse See SURFING, Page 5

ON LAND Taking swings on the green By Brittany Llorente STUART — When looking for an outdoor activity that is both fun and leisurely, golfing is a perfect solution. The Florida Club is the home of Stuart golf, a public golf course providing the feel of a private golf course but at affordable prices. The course is designed for both new and experienced golfers. Tom Welz, Florida Club’s General Manager and Director of Golf, said that the club prides itself on being the best value for the money. “It’s really a player friendly course,” Mr. Welz said. “There are five sets of tees, so you have your forward tees for higher handicap players and the more experienced players play the back tees. It’s challenging but nothing really difficult that the average player can’t overcome.” The spacious course, dunes and water hazards make the course not only fun but beautiful. As a beginner, Mr. Welz said that the staff will recommend what you should do as a new golfer and what you will need to begin playing this wonderful game. “We don’t recommend people go out and buy equipment because they don’t know what kind of golfer they’re going to be,” he said. “They need to experience the game first. The best way would be to take some golf lessons. This will help get you off to a good start.” Lessons allow a player to work through the simple process,

whether you’re experienced or not. “Some people are apprehensive about taking golf lessons because they don’t want to be embarrassed,” he said. “We will make those people feel comfortable and help get them started.” The staff is on hand to help with any questions that golfers of any experience level may have. “(The staff) helps people so that they can be comfortable enough to say, ‘listen, I’m new, I want to play, what do I do?’ We take the time to talk to them and help them.” There are many health benefits to golfing including exercise, burning calories and psychological benefits such as reduced stress and peace of mind. Also, going outside in the sun gives you vitamin D, which a lot of people lack and it helps you sleep better. “There is also a social aspect to golfing,” Mr. Welz said. “There is a lot of family bonding and business deals on the course also.” If you’re interested in golfing, make sure you’re prepared when you hit the course. Bring proper sunscreen, bug spray and maybe even a hat. During the summer, The Florida Club has several specials for golf to keep costs down, so it’s the perfect time to try it out. The Florida Club is located at 9005 SW Old Royal Drive in Stuart. For more information, call (772) 287-3680 or visit www.floridaclubgolf.com When hitting the sand, bring sunscreen, sunglasses and surf wax for traction on your board. Spunky’s Surf Shop is located at 1403 North U.S.1, Fort Pierce. For more information, call (772) 466-7048.

GRILLS By Dale Brandt Special to Forever Young

The summertime is all about spending time with family, the smell of charcoal burning on the grill, the sound of chicken sizzling and the water balloon fights later. The family gathers around the new grill, because the one from last year rusted through or doesn’t ignite anymore. How much did the grill cost you this year? And the year before that? And the year before that? By now (and likely a few summers ago) you could have purchased a grill that was made to last. At Brandt’s Appliances in Vero Beach, they have the solution for everyone from the casual griller to the grill master. Brandt’s carries only top brand grills like DCS, Fire Magic, Broil Mas-

Each and every grill in the shop has a limited lifetime warranty that covers the entire grill, including the grill body, cooking grate and burners. Each grill is made from either grade 304 stainless steel or cast aluminum. One customer has had their grill for more than 20 years and it’s still grilling everything from steaks to vegetables. They’ve saved thousands by purchasing a grill that may have been a little more at first, but paid off in the long run. To keep your grill serviced and maintained, they have factory trained service technicians to keep it not only looking like new, but working like new. uly celebrates our nation’s independence. If some of your ancestors were in America during this time, it is likely that you are a descendant of one or more Revolutionary War veterans. By identifying an ancestor who was about 16 years of age or older in 1783, there are many sources you can explore. Surviving records identify more than 250,000 military participants, and supporting records refer to millions of wives and descendants. Your ancestor’s roles in the fight for independence come in all sizes and shapes. His contribution to the cause may have been his life or something as simple as providing food or shelter to the patriots. Military service records for soldiers serving in volunteer units in wars since 1775 have been compiled

by the United States government in the form of muster rolls, orders, pay lists, hospital records and correspondence. Colonies and states kept service records for their own militia and volunteer regiments. You will also find family genealogies and records that will lead you to your patriot. There are many federal and state government granted pensions to officers, disabled veterans, needy veterans, widows or orphans of veterans and veterans who served a certain length of time. Pension records usually contain more genealogical information than

service records. However, not all veterans made an application for, or received, a pension. The federal and some state governments offered land to those who served in the military. This is called “bounty land.” Bounty land could be claimed by veterans or their heirs. The federal government reserved tracts of land in the public domain, and some states set aside tracts of bounty land for their Revolutionary War veterans. A veteran could request bounty land by filing an application at their local courthouse. These application papers and supporting documents were placed in bounty land files, kept by the federal or state agency. The files contain information similar to pension files such as the veteran’s age, place of residence at the time of application, and the type

and length of service. These records will be found in the National or State Archives. Local public and academic libraries have references on the Revolutionary War. You will find many histories and military engagements, as well as genealogical material, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Indexes. While Daughters of the American Revolution indexes are valuable, they are not complete. Your ancestor may have served and not be listed. However, if you find your ancestor is mentioned as a patriot, it means that someone has joined the Daughters of the American Revolution upon the service of this person. FORT PIERCE — For more than 40 years, Chef Ty Neuman has been delighting palates around the world. Luckily for those who live close to Fort Pierce, his newest restaurant, Coyote Grill and Seafood Eatery, is easily accessible and full of reasons to sit down for an incredible meal. Nestled just inside the Road Runner Travel Resort on St. Lucie Boulevard, the quaint restaurant is surrounded by nature. The quiet atmosphere, which includes trees, trails and a pond, makes visitors feel as if they’ve escaped to the countryside. The picturesque locale is accentuated by the small eatery, nestled next to a country store and surrounded by a large deck. The menu includes items such as soup and salads to chicken wings and pizza. But, if you want to try something a little more daring, Chef Neuman or the other chef on staff, Michel Faugue, will prepare calamari, their version of shrimp on the Barbie, specials on live lobster, prime rib, paella, Boston scrod and Chef Neuman’s claim to fame; the Fokie. My companion and I visited Coyote Grill on a quiet Saturday evening. The sun was setting and everything around seemed just a little more laid back than usual. Chef Neuman greeted us as we walked in and was incredibly attentive. “I’ve been doing this a long time,” he said. “I’ve owned 21 restaurants all over the country and worked at restaurants all over the world. I’ve also worked every position in the restaurant business, from bus boy to captain to maître d’ to owner. I think that type of experience is important. I know as head chef I want to prepare the best tasting food and I know as owner, I want a chef who takes pride in his work.” It’s easy to tell that he takes pride in every dish that he prepares. Chef Neuman brought out an appetizer of shrimp on the Barbie, a

The large shrimp were full of flavor and had to be cut into bite size pieces. Flavor was added to the yellow rice by diced vegetables that added a wonderful crunch. “I started making Fokies about years and years ago and they were a hit as soon as I started selling them,” Chef Neuman said as he described his signature dish. “I prepare the dough fresh every day. It’s prepared with basil, roasted garlic and grilled onion. I grill it and then add all of the ingredients of the sandwich and top it with Bam Bam sauce.” Because I had to know what all the fuss was about, my companion and I tried the sandwich… And, we can assure you that it really has been dubbed appropriately, ‘The best sandwich on the planet.’ The Focaccia bread is absolutely delightful and is bursting with flavor. Our sandwich was full of roast beef, ham, turkey, American, Swiss and provolone cheeses, fresh spinach, tomatoes, banana peppers, onions, and the

tangy Bam Bam sauce. The sandwich can also be served with tuna salad or chicken salad. The amazing sandwich is served with a side of coleslaw for only $6.95. Although we were getting full, he insisted we try some of the fried belly clams, shrimp and tilapia that that are featured on the entrée menu. The seafood is dipped in flour, milk seasoned with paprika, and yellow corn flour. The result is a light coating that doesn’t weigh down the seafood with grease. There is a prefect ratio of coating to seafood, leaving the delicious seafood flavor intact, yet coated with a delightful crunch. The menu also offers sweet treats, including Peach Melba, a serving of ice cream, topped with peaches and a sauce made of black and red raspberries. Coyote Grill and Seafood Eatery is located inside the Road Runner Travel Resort, 5500 St. Lucie Blvd. in Fort Pierce. The restaurant is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call (772) 465-0202.

Explore a series of six diverse gardens, enjoy the exhibits and ceremonies or grab a bite to eat in the renowned Cornell Cafe. This restaurant has been judged by The Food Network as one of the top three museum dining experiences in the country. I have eaten there many times and it is the perfect start or end of a day in this beautiful paradise. If bird watching and Nature Preserves are the way you like to spend a day, then this is the perfect place to accomplish this. The Wakodahatchee Wetlands has more than 140 species of birds for you to look for. You can tour this park seven days a week at no cost. The Green Cay Nature Center is another great place to spend as little or as much of a day as you like. It is located on Hagen Ranch Road in Boynton Beach, just barely over the Delray Beach border. The wetland features 1.5 miles of elevated boardwalk featuring interpretive signs about the habitat. The Nature Center includes a lecture hall, gift shop and live animals in an extensive exhibit room that highlights wetland attributes. There is plenty to choose from if you want to spend a day, or include an overnight stay to enjoy more of this great area. Until next month... Anyone can plan a trip.....Let me help you plan a memory. elcome to Delray Beach! This is such a fun place for day trips, as there are so many great places to visit. Beautiful beaches, theaters, sporting events, nature and, of course, shopping are all here. Atlantic Avenue by night or day offers plenty to do. There are restaurants, galleries, shops and places to stop and people watch. From the Atlantic Antiques Merchant Mall to the Avalon Gallery, you can keep yourself busy for hours. Downtown Delray Beach was recently awarded “Best of the Road Most Fun Small Town in America” by Rand McNally & USA Today. If you like the beach, continue down Atlantic Avenue and find a place to park, because the beach is right across the street on A1A. If you get hungry while you are in the area, try Boston’s on the Beach, one of my personal favorites. The Artists Alley Open Studios is an exciting new warehouse arts area in the Pineapple Grove Arts District of Delray Beach. Check it out from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every third Thursday from May to September. If you like to shop, then the Carnival Flea Market will be perfect for you. It is located on Atlantic Avenue and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. You will find everything from home goods to jewelry, health and beauty aids and, of course, food. For my tennis fans, Delray Beach is home to Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. It is a full-service public tennis facility, but it is best known for the championship tournaments, like the Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro Celebrity Tennis Classic every November. What would visiting a town be without great theater? The Delray Beach Playhouse includes “Driving Miss Daisy” and “You Can’t Take it With You” in its lineup. The Crest Theater provides professional theater as well as a lecture series,

If your grill has not started within 15 seconds, turn the grill off and wait for about five minutes. The liquefied petroleum gas that is in your tanks is heavier than air and sits in the bottom of your grill. If you try to immediately light your grill again, you’re going to get a big ‘woof’ of fire which could be harmful to your skin and eyebrows. We will have cooking classes to be offered over the summer for those who wish to learn to cook on our grills. This would be a good time to test out our grills and get a feel for them. just a light vegetable oil, the salt stone seasons the meat and seers the flavor and juices into what you’re grilling. The salt acts as an antibacterial, so you wipe the stone clean and it’s good to go for something new, whether it is fish or chicken, without transferring any of the flavor. These salt stones last for about 20 years. There are also salt stones for turkeys that are placed into the turkey and helps keep the turkey tender and seasoned from within. When indulging in summer barbecue fun, there are a few tips from the experienced grilling masters at Brandt’s. First, when you’re turning on your gas grill, make sure that you click your igniter, then turn on your gas. Make sure that the hood on the grill is open. Never have the grill hood closed while trying to ignite the grill. It will basically turn an ordinary grill into a dangerous situation.
