hen you’re a child, you say to yourself, “When I grow up, I want to be…” and whether it’s an astronaut, firefighter or in my case, a journalist, those endeavors are usually set aside to make way for the real life. Well, what happens when you’re ‘grown up’ and those ambitions have been set so far on the backburner that you’re not quite sure you can reach them anymore? A few years ago, I was working in a retail store and had a manager I adored. She was smart and driven, but she always remained in retail, never got out of it. I had already earned a bachelor’s degree and was working in retail until I could find a career in my field. After some changes to management and other ups and downs, she

was faced with a career decision. When we were talking one day, I asked her what she wanted to do before she had a family. She replied, “I always wanted to do X-rays… like radiology.” That statement turned into ambition. Ambition turned into desire, which lead her back to college and applying for the radiology program at a local college. She only has one semester left before she graduates. I couldn’t be more proud of her. Soon after this, my mom decided she was bored. She signed up for a

Heading back to school program with the district attorney’s office to be a private investigator. She had a new passion, a new desire to help the justice system and learn new and exciting things. I’ve seen lots of different times where those people who have done something their whole lives turned around and said, “You know what? Let’s try something new, something different.” There is nothing wrong with deciding what you’ve done all your life is not the thing for you anymore. We all grow, whether it’s together, apart or up and in more aspects than just our desires and tastes. If you’ve always wanted to see if there was something beyond what you’re doing today, there are several places to go back to school. We live in an area that is full of

colleges and universities that cater to the younger and the “forever” young. In this issue, we talk to people, who changed their minds later in life, giving them a new outlook. We talked to the different schools in the area about programs and beating down the “But I’m too old to go back to school” thoughts. You’re not. You’re never too old or young to learn something new. It all starts with a little ambition. We here at Forever Young, hope that you enjoy this issue, but more so, that it may inspire you to learn something new or to take those first steps toward returning to college. As always, we welcome your questions and comments at ForeverYoung@HometownNewsOL.com.

Options aplenty for Brevardians

If you’re one of the thousands of Brevard residents, who are considering going back to school to get a higher education, you may have more options than you think. In addition to the two state-funded choices offered locally – the University of Central Florida and the newly minted Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College), there is also a plethora of educational options available for local residents via the Independent Colleges & Universities of Florida, an association that represents 31 independent schools across the state and serves approximately 150,000 students. While not all of the member schools have outlets available along the Space Coast, the options for someone seeking higher education are extraordinarily vast. “If someone is looking to go back to

school in this state, they really have a tremendous selection,” said Ed Moore, President of ICUF. “Several of our institutions offer traditional classes in Brevard County, and 20 of our schools offer the opportunity for full-degree programs through online classes. When you begin to consider your options, you can see that you can get a degree in just about any field of study you’re interested in.” To underscore that assessment, Mr. Moore said the following ICUF institutions offer conventional classes throughout Brevard County: • Florida Institute of Technology: The ICUF’s largest presence in Brevard County, FIT serves 9,000 students, with hundreds of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the fields of engineering, the sciences, business, aviation and psychology on the sprawling 130-

acre campus at 150 W. University Blvd., Melbourne. College offers options for students of all ages

By Dan McDonald Foreveryoung@homtownnewsol.com

When Ericka Ross-Murray came to Brevard County 18 years ago, she admits she didn’t have a real clear idea of what she wanted to do for a career – although she knew what field she wanted to be involved with. “I’ve always wanted to be in the health care profession somehow and have always believed it’s a great field to be in because there are so many opportunities and you can find work anywhere,” the 41-year-old Palm Bay resident said. “I didn’t really know what I would be doing, but I guess I had a vague idea of what direction I was looking in.” It was that decision to enter the health care field that led Ms. RossMurray to become the first student, who applied for, and one of the first students selected by, the recently rebranded Eastern Florida State College, formerly known as Brevard Community College. “April 1 of this year was the first time anyone could apply for the new four-year degree,” Ms. Ross-Murray said. “At 12:01 a.m., I signed in on the computer and completed my application. It was two weeks later when the school called and said I was accepted in the health care management field. Now, I can’t wait to get started when classes start Aug. 19.” For Ms. Ross-Murray, the chance to earn a four-year degree ends a long trek through educational hallways that began with classes at the formerly named Brevard Community College. “I started taking courses at BCC in 2001,” she said, adding that it wasn’t until last August that she completed her associate’s degree and began looking at what might be her best option for the future. “I knew I wanted to continue in the medical profession,” said Ms. RossMurray, who has worked for the last 16 years at Florida Eye Associates, most recently as a certified oph-

I did some research looking at other schools and talked with advisors at the University of Central Florida before I heard that BCC was going to add four-year programs.” Ms. Ross-Murray attended a seminar at BCC last March, in which the staff outlined some of the steps the school would be taking to become a four-year college and what types of programs it would be offering. “It just seemed like all the parts were falling into place for me,” she said. The applications process that Ms.

Ross-Murray had to complete included an essay on what type of professional she wanted to be in the health field and what she was looking to accomplish with her degree. For several days, she sweated out the wait until she was notified that she would be among the first class eligible to receive a bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Florida State College in the field of health care management. “I’m planning on taking all of the classes I need to get my bachelor’s degree,” Ms. Ross-Murray said, “then I’m already planning on going for a master’s degree in health management. I’d like to get into the administrative side of the health care profession.”

Ms. Ross-Murray is also a champion of encouraging others to pursue their educational dreams, as well. “My advice to anyone is to do your research,” she said. “Keep your plans on a realistic timeline. I wasted a lot of years not really focusing in on what I wanted to do. When you’re 18 or 19 years old, you have time to explore various options. You can afford to try different things and experiment. But when you’re older, you have to narrow down your choices.” For more information about the program and courses offered at Eastern Florida State College, call (321) 632-1111, or visit www.easternflorida.edu.

Ms. Liciaga said. “They have a plan that lets you take all the core courses needed for that specific degree first, so you can actually qualify to get a job in that field. Then, while you’re working, you can take the general courses at night, so you can finish your degree.” Ms. Liciaga said the program was exactly what she needed. “I was making minimum wage at the day care center and remember sitting in my car one day and realizing I had to make a change,” she said. “After I finished my externship, which is like an internship, at Brevard Medical Alliance, I was offered two different jobs through the Keiser placement office. I took the one that offered the most money and was very satisfied.” Ms. Liciaga was hired before she had even taken her state medical exam, another advantage, she said, of attending Keiser. “Keiser has such a good reputation that companies know you’re coming out with good solid skills,” Ms. Liciaga said. “I was able to jump right into a

When Tameika Liciaga realized she wouldn’t be able to support both herself and her daughter on her salary as a day care assistant, the 25-year-old Palm Bay resident and single-parent studied her options and decided she need to pursue higher education. “I looked at all the options available to me here in Brevard County and was actually taking classes at Brevard Community College before I ultimately settled for a program, offered at Keiser University in Melbourne,” Ms. Liciaga said. “The thing I liked about Keiser is that they offer specific programs, with specific targets, and it helped focus me in on a career path. It was the best thing I could have done.” After speaking with a guidance counselor at the 900 S. Babcock St. campus, Ms. Liciaga settled on the “endless demand” medical career, and started taking classes in the medical assisting course in August 2011 and earned her degree in May 2013. “What made it especially good was that they helped find me work in that field, while I was still taking classes,”

ack pain that has lasted more than six months has skyrocketed to more than 5 million Americans annually, and the longer the root cause of the pain goes untreated, the worse it gets. Pain is usually a signal that tells us something is out of balance, and we need to recognize its source and slow down or back off from what is causing the pain. Conventional Western medicine solutions often revolve around strong painkillers and anti-inflammatory meds, yet these treatments do not necessarily address the root cause. They may get you through the day, but by doing this we are not listening to our body’s cry to recuperate, and we could be worsening the original injury. In addition, pain meds have side effects,

interactions and the potential for addiction. Pain can be caused by physical strain, disease, chemical sensitivities, emotional stress, chronic inflammation, allergies, infections, environmental toxins or a lack of lubrication to the joints, caused by nutritional deficiencies. It is always important to get to the root cause of the pain when working with herbs. Chronic pain is multidimensional, so the medicinal herbs along with other therapies such as massage, energy or chiropractic work, or acupuncture would

be best when suited to the cause of your pain. When using herbal therapy, your options would depend on the type of pain. For instance antispasmodic herbs like Jamaican Dogwood, crampbark, black cohosh, black haw, angelica and St. Johns Wort work throughout the body to reduce muscle tension and spasms, due to over-use. Anti-inflammatory herbs, unlike medications, do not suppress the healing process. Instead they pull out the toxic debris released by inflammation to the muscles surrounding the joints, so the healing can proceed. They also do not put you at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding. Herbs such as turmeric, Solomon’s Seal, St. Johns Wort, ginger, devils claw and boswellia (which also has analgesic properties that ease pain

It is also important to consider other aspects of chronic pain. There may be a deficiency of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, silica, omega-3 or other vital nutrients. For this, nettle, oatsraw, alfalfa, dandelion, horsetail, burdock and red raspberry can be of help. Along with those actions, you See HERB, Page 7

The teachers are great and are there to help you. If you study and go to the classes, I think anyone is capable of completing a course at Keiser. It’s really geared up to help you succeed. It’s still not the end of the line. Pick up the phone, and call. We take the fear away. Fear of the unknown. We’re able to go through everything to make sure we’re a good fit.” Ms. Heinrichs said currently, Keiser University has approximately 1,000 students in Melbourne of all ages. may also want to think about adaptogenic herbs to help you better cope with the stress of your pain, as well as immune modulating herbs because when you are dealing with chronic pain, your immune system also suffers. When initially working with herbs for pain, you may need to use them more frequently until the pain starts to subside. This is temporary. Eventually your body will become more balanced and you can decrease the amount of herbs used. Just remember to listen to your body. MELBOURNE — At Possum Crossing, owner Buz Underill lives by the philosophy that, if it’s not good enough for him, it’s not good enough for his customers. “I taste all of our ingredients,” he said. “We do everything fresh daily to order. It makes a huge difference.” Since opening its doors in March, Possum Crossing has treated guests to homemade Southern-style. Now, the restaurant is expanding its menu, creating the “New South,” Southern dishes, with a modern twist. “There are not many places that do true Southern cooking,” he said. “This (part of the menu) is not your traditional Southern. Everyone has their take on what constitutes southern. This may not be your mama’s recipe, but it’s someone’s mama’s recipe.” On the “New South” menu, diners can choose from a variety of options, including dishes like chicken and

sweet potato dumplings. Other options include sweet tea glazed duck, which is a pan-seared then oven-roasted duck breast, served over garlic mashed potatoes and honey-lacquered grilled quail, a southern tradition served over cornbread and Cajun bacon dressing. Another popular item on the menu is the fried catfish, which is handbreaded and deep-fried to a state of perfection. For starters, appetizers include Southern staples, such as fried green tomatoes, as well as a duck quesadilla and alligator nuggets, which is tender pieces of alligator coated in seasoned flour and then fried. Following the meal, Mr. Underill said diners enjoy eating his delicious banana pudding. For those looking for an entertaining evening, Possum Crossing also provides a variety of Moonshine-

based drinks and Friday and Saturday live music, which is sure to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience that most chain restaurants cannot, Mr. Underill said. “This is a great place for people to meet,” he said. “We try and focus on our service.” In the future, Mr. Underill said he hopes to see the restaurant expand and continue to offer excellent service to its guests. “We want to keep doing what we’re doing, adding a few items along the way,” he said. “This is a process.” Possum Crossing is located at 4200 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne, and is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Another advantage, Mr. Moore said, is that schools in the Independent Colleges & Universities of Florida tend to cater to the non-traditional student or those individuals, who have been out in the workforce and are thinking of returning to school after several years. Students attending ICUF schools also average graduation in 4.1 years, which is much better than statefunded schools. “And, ICUF schools use the same accreditation services as the other schools,

so all credits are transferable,” Mr. Moore added. While acknowledging that ICUF schools tend to be more expensive than statefunded institutions, Mr. Moore said that private schools offer a student more flexibility and options to customize a schedule that better fits their needs, as well as many that offer full online degree programs. After tapping a few more times, we began to communicate, or so I thought. I began with “I was refused a Pell Grant, and would like to pay for the class I signed up for.” When he finally looked up there was surprise in his eyes “Why were you denied?” I admitted I didn’t know, but would just pay now and find out later, as today was the deadline for the semester. ontrary to seemingly popular opinion, my old gray matter has not solidified into a solid gelatinous mass. I am still capable of free thought and ambulation, and learning is still exciting to me. As time and funds permit, I take a course or two at one of our local colleges. I am not interested in earning a degree, just being better at what I do. Apparently, therein lies my problem. Recently, I paid a visit in person to the school, and when I told the nice young lady which class I was interested in, her response was a wide-eyed “Why didn’t you just sign up at our website? You wouldn’t have had to climb all those stairs!” I stifled the impulse to tell the cute little thing that I climb more stairs in one day than she had in her whole lifetime. Instead, I nicely informed her that I took my time and did not exert myself, and could we please get me

Do you know why?” Harold had a red tint to his black hair; it matched his one red earring. He asked, “Why didn’t they inform you why you were refused?” The questions were getting harder. I informed them, that I had to go now. As I returned my number, I could feel three sets of narrow eyes on my back. That afternoon, my daughter walked into the kitchen and I said I was going to wait until next semester to take my class because I was refused a Pell Grant. Her eyes narrowed, “Why were you refused?” I went online and signed up for a course in creative speaking. I’ll be reapplying for that Pell Grant next semester and want to be prepared.
