Enjoying the great outdoors WRITER/PRODUCTION COORDINATOR BRITTANY A. LLORENTE

You don’t need to buy a ton of equipment; in fact, most of the suppliers say you should rent before you buy to make sure you like the activity first. If you’re looking for activities on the mainland, golfing happens to be one of the most popular things to do. In Florida, there are 1,481 golf courses and ranges. So, there is likely one right around the

corner from you, no matter where you live. Take a lesson and hit the course, again, not buying until you’ve tried out the sport. This issue of Forever Young was inspired by the sun, the wonderful summer weather and the fun of Independence Day. Make sure you’re prepared for the outdoors. According to skincancer.org, sunscreen should be applied every two hours and have an SPF of 15 or higher. We, here at Forever Young, hope that you enjoy the rest of summer and explore the reasons that people from all over the world flock to our bit of paradise. As always, we welcome your questions, comments and concerns at ForeverYoung@hometownnewsol.com.

The amount of outdoor activities is bountiful for those of us in Florida. We have the extra added bonus of water and inland activities that give you every excuse to get off the couch and spend some time in the sun. On the water, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving are some of the favorite activities. If you’ve never tried any of these activities on the water or are thinking of trying a new one, it may be the time to get out and try something new (Remember? It’s one of our New Year’s resolutions).

hen you live in paradise, it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else. The beaches, sand, palm trees and our own little slice of sunshine makes going outdoors a love for many of us. In the month of July, cookouts and barbecuing for Independence Day is a time-honored tradition, paired with fireworks and the gathering of family and friends. Each year, I go out to the river and watch the fireworks. The sounds of the children, spectators and visitors saying ‘ooooh’ and ‘aaaah’ as each firework lights up the night sky is heartwarming and makes me enjoy the beauty of a Florida summer. Then I swat a mosquito. Yes, our slice of heaven has its drawbacks, but we’ve learned to make the best of it.

Gail Nolan likes being outside. As the mother of two active Boy Scouts, the West Melbourne resident frequently spends weekends camping or attending other Scouting activities. Yet, she said it wasn’t until she started participating in organized running events that she really began spending time in the “great outdoors.” “My husband and I and the kids moved back to Brevard County for work in September 2012,” said Mrs. Nolan, who graduated from Eau Gallie High School before settling in Virginia. “My sister-in-law, Sue, was already running in numerous events when we moved back home, and she talked me into signing up for the

After the halfmarathon, the 5K was a snap, and I was hooked.” When it comes to such events, Mrs. Nolan said she enjoys everything: the training, the competition, the camaraderie, the support, the enthusiasm. Since that first event, I try to do at least one race a month.” Now, a confirmed speed walker, Mrs. Nolan has also seen her family join in on the action. OUTDOORS By Dan McDonald Foreveryoung@homtownnewsol.com

Neta Harris, executive director of the Brevard Nature Alliance, gladly asserts there is a “plethora” of outdoor activities to meet the needs of anyone living in or visiting the Space Coast. “There are so many interesting and varied things to do and enjoy that it’s really hard to focus on any one activity or any one area of the county,” said Mrs. Harris, whose group is charged with building public awareness and appreciation of the value of Brevard County’s natural resources. “We are blessed with a plethora of riches – some unique to our part of the world.” To illustrate the actual scope of the plethora, Mrs. Harris points one to “The Adventure Destination Guide of Florida’s Space Coast,” a 50-page booklet, produced in partnership with the Space Coast Office of Tourism and VISIT FLORIDA, the state’s tourism development corporation. “We help distribute the adventure guide to hotels and motels and other outlets throughout the county,” Mrs. Harris said of the BNA, which is based on the Titusville campus of Brevard Community College. The guide is also available at the four county Chambers of Commerce offices in Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Melbourne and Palm Bay, as well as The Brevard Zoo. “We feel Brevard is perfectly positioned to capitalize on the ecotourism trend,” she said. “We have numerous places for people to explore the great outdoors, either on water or on land or even on horseback. We truly are blessed to have the local commitment to preserving the wilderness that is all around us.” A quick look at the adventure guide, which is broken down to Brevard Birding and Wildlife Sites, Adventures on Water and Adventures

on Land, confirms Harris’ assessment. The guide offers 102 different places, sites and activities to whet the appetite of those seeking outdoor adventure. In order to narrow the list, Mrs. Harris offered her top three hidden gems that offer people a chance to explore the great outdoors, Space Coast style. 1. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge: Home to more threatened and endangered animals than any other refuge in the continental United States, visitors can roam 140,000 acres of salt marsh, estuaries, upland hammocks and scrubland, which, among others, is home to manatees, alligators and bald eagles. The refuge offers hiking and biking trails, spots for kayaking and more than 40 miles of drivable dirt roads. They also have the Black Point Wildlife Drive, which is an 11-mile drive, where guests can see birds and alligators and different animals without even getting out of their car. Throw in a manatee watch area, the world-class birding opportunities and the solitude of the great outdoors, and you have a unique spot that truly is a Space Coast treasure. For more information about the Merritt Island Refuge, call (321) 8610668, or visit www.fws.gov/merrittisland/. 2. Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera: Although started as an area of inter-connected wastewater treatment ponds opened in 2001, the wetlands site has become one of the world’s meccas for birding. In November 2002, the first official U.S. sighting of a Mangrove Swallow was notched. Other avian guests include Mexican cave swallows, an active bald eagle nest, mottle ducks, mallards, hood and red-breasted Merganzers, lesser caup and whistling ducks, among many others. “This is another treasure in Brevard that some people may not know

Nature enthusiasts from throughout the county participate in a swamp walk at the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville. about,” Mrs. Harris said. “You can drive around the top of the berms, and from your car, see hundreds of the 300 species of birds that call Brevard home. There is also an observation tower and great opportunities for hiking and nature photography. And sometimes you can see whole families of limpkins, a bird that is rare to see in other parts of the country.” To visit the free refuge, take exit 191 off I-95 and go west to the end of Wickham Road. 3. St. Sebastian River Preserve: Kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding are just some of the activities you can enjoy at this state park that is home to one of the largest and healthiest colonies of Florida ScrubJays in the world, a colony of majestic red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises, Eastern indigo snakes and nesting bald eagles. In addition, there are more than 40 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails and a Visitor Center that offers many educational and informative exhibits. “This is another hidden gem in Bre-

vard County,” Mrs. Harris said. “You can have a great day, even if you don’t happen to see one of the large woodpeckers or Scrub Jays. You can hike, picnic, take photographs and just enjoy being in the great outdoors.” Brevard is really blessed to have so much wonderful diversity and beauty in its own backyard, Mrs. Harris said. “I urge everyone to get a copy of the ‘Adventure Guide’ and to get off your couch and get outdoors,” she said. “We really do live in paradise, and once you get out and see it, you’ll come to appreciate our natural heritage. It’s a blessing that other parts of the country and world just don’t have.” For more information about outdoor activities available, you can get a free copy of the ‘Adventure Guide’ at any of the County Chambers of Commerces. ADVENTURES

A club for all seasons

By Dan McDonald If you like boating, kayaking, hiking, camping, picnics, bonfires on the beach, outdoor volleyball – well, just about any activity you can squeeze into the great outdoors – then you’ll want to know about the Brevard Outdoor Adventures, a local group open to everyone interested in sharing adventure under the sky. “It really is a great group for anyone who likes being active and doing outdoor activities,” said Kenton Anz, an I.T. consultant from Melbourne, who joined the organization four years ago. “I was tired of the bar scene and wanted to find people interested in the same outdoor activities that I enjoy. Everyone is welcome, and many of the events are family-friendly. It really is a great way to meet people and have fun and enjoy being outdoors.” The BOA is one of the organizations that operates under the bigger umbrella of an Internet association, called Meetup, which claims more than 14 million members, attached to 130,765 groups in 196 countries. Locally, 400 people have paid the $5 yearly dues and joined the BOA, which allows them to participate in any of the sponsored activities.

“It really is a unique way make friends and have fun and do things that you want to do with other like-minded people,” said Mr. Anz, who has lived in Brevard for 20 years. “The cool thing about the group is you can come up with any idea you want, and if you get others who want to do it, you can organize that event and put it on the website. Then, you never know how many people might want to sign up and do the same thing. “I enjoy the boating, kayaking and camping,” he said. “We’ve kayaked on Turkey Creek at Sebastian Inlet and the Thousand Islands, and, now I’m enjoying playing beach volleyball.” Mr. Anz said his advice for anyone who wants to enjoy doing things outdoors is to give it a try. You’ll find friendly people, who enjoy being active and doing things together. And, the dues are so low you don’t have much to lose. I think anyone will enjoy it.” Another local who agrees that the BOA is a Meetup, offering unique opportunities, is Gigi King, a 53-yearold West Melbourne resident, who works as a receptionist at the Morgan

L

upus is a complex autoimmune disease, affecting mostly women, between the ages of 15-35. For these people, the body seems to be attacking many different tissue and organs, instead of protecting it. This multisystem, multi-organ connective tissue disease is usually very hard to diagnose because it has very vague symptoms, some of which are a low-grade fever, fatigue, depression, generalized weakness, anemia, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, menstrual irregularities, mouth sores, seizures, psychiatric disorders, joint pain, light sensitivity, lung or kidney weakness or lesions on the face that look like a butterfly, all of which can go into remission. These symptoms can be bothersome for many years, disrupting daily activities, or they can come on quickly, destroying vital organs. Just as there are many types of

lupus, there are many causes. It has a genetic component, in which it seems to affect many people in the same family. I can think of five people in my immediate family with this condition and all of them have different forms of this disease. Most people believe it to be brought on by ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure, but it can be also related to environmental toxins from dyes, pesticides or other toxic chemicals. Lupus can also be brought on by hormonal imbalances, stress, and improper assimilation of nutrients, medications, food sensitivities or low blood levels of antioxidants. It may have been triggered by a bacterial or

viral infection that caused a malfunction of the immune system, or it may be multi-factorial and have no specific cause. The actions of the herbs that you may want to try should support the root cause of the problem, as well as the symptoms. Alterative herbs (milk thistle, nettle, dandelion, licorice and Pau d’Arco) help to remove toxic substances from the body, with Pau d’ Arco also protecting the liver and kidneys, while helping to cleanse toxins from the body reducing inflammation and pain. Anti-inflammatory herbs work like cortico-steroids, helping to reduce pain and inflammation (wild yam or licorice). These contain natural hormones and saponins and stimulate aldosterone and cortisone, helping the body to hold on to its own prednisone and cortisone, enhancing their effectiveness as opposed to long-term use of

cortisone-like drugs that cause adrenal atrophy and the suppression of the body’s defense system, weight gain, edema, osteoporosis, depression and sleep disturbances. Immune modulating or antiviral herbs help the body heal itself (ashwaganda, Pau d’Arco, usnea, garlic, elderberry or astragalus). These herbs are rich in polysaccharides; a chief nutrient needed for the regulation of the immune system. Anti-rheumatic herbs help ease painful joints (wild yam, buplerum, nettle, ashwaganda, licorice and black cohosh). Diuretic herbs help to reduce edema caused by the condition or the medications given for the condition (nettle, borage, artichoke leaf, celery and dandelion). All of these herbs are not meant to replace allopathic medications, but to tone and support the body; hopefully reducing the dependency on steroids.

FOREVER YOUNG

Summertime chilling, grilling By Dale Brandt Special to Forever Young

The summertime is all about spending time with family, the smell of charcoal burning on the grill, the sound of chicken sizzling and the water balloon fights later. The family gathers around the new grill, because the one from last year rusted through or doesn’t ignite anymore. How much did the grill cost you this year? And the year before that? And the year before that? By now (and likely a few summers ago) you could have purchased a grill that was made to last. At Brandt’s Appliances in Vero Beach, they have the solution for everyone from the casual griller to the grill master. Brandt’s carries only top brand grills like DCS, Fire Magic, Broil Master, A.O.G. and more. Each and every grill in the shop has a limited lifetime warranty that covers the entire grill, including the grill body, cooking grate and burners. Each grill is made from either grade 304 stainless steel or cast aluminum. One customer has had their grill for more than 20 years and it’s still grilling everything from steaks to vegetables. They’ve saved thousands by purchasing a grill that may have been a little more at first, but paid off in the long run. To keep your grill serviced and maintained, they have factory trained service technicians to keep it not only looking like new, but working like new. The shop is also a factory-authorized warranty repair center, ready to take care of any problems that may arise. Each customer can rest assured that they have someone local to turn to if anything should happen. The folks at Brandt’s know that the No. 1 objective for any business is having customer satisfaction. Because of that goal, they’ve been in business for over 24 years and have a Better Business Bureau rating of an A+.

Simply, they are a name that you can trust. In addition to grills, the shop builds and designs custom kitchens, both indoors and outdoors, for customers. No job is too big or too small. The kitchens can include grills, fire pits, fireplaces, side burners, warming drawers, sinks, refrigerators and more. With their team of designers from carpentry to stone mason workers, the embodiment of your dream kitchen is within reach. When adding an outdoor kitchen onto a home, you’re increasing not only the functionality of your home but also the value of it, because it adds square footage to your home as living space. In addition to grills and other assorted products, Brandt’s also sells Himalayan salt stones. The salt stone is placed on the grill and the meat and vegetables are placed directly on the salt stone. Without any marinade, just a light vegetable oil, the salt stone seasons the meat and seers the flavor and juices into what you’re grilling. The salt acts as an antibacterial, so you wipe the stone clean and it’s good to go for something new, whether it is fish or chicken, without transferring any of the flavor. These salt stones last for about 20 years. There are also salt stones for turkeys that are placed into the turkey and helps keep the turkey tender and seasoned from within. When indulging in summer barbecue fun, there are a few tips from the experienced grilling masters at Brandt’s. First, when you’re turning on your gas grill, make sure that you click your igniter, then turn on your gas. Make sure that the hood on the grill is open. Never have the grill hood closed while trying to ignite the grill. It will basically turn an ordinary grill into a dangerous situation. If your grill has not started within 15 seconds, turn the grill off and See GRILLING, Page 10
