Bronco. My family still has the Bronco, and it is in the process of getting up and running again. Recently, I found out that my dad is fixing up the Bronco and having it restored to look like new. Why? Because he had this idea that the first car I ever rode in, the first car I learned to drive manually, should be the car that he would drive to bring me to the church on the day that I get married. When I was told this, I got tearyeyed. I have no current plans of getting married, but just the thought of the scenario and that he thought of it, made my heart stop for a moment. No matter how old I get, how far away we live or how far away he is at the moment, I know my dad is there for me. I know that if my car breaks down, he is there to help me fix it, and I will be there with a cold beverage looking on and hoping to learn from him as I’ve done all my life. I’m lucky to have his love. I hope everyone takes the time on Father’s Day to talk to their father, have a dinner with them or share a memory of their father. We hope you enjoy this edition of Forever Young and the stories of lives touched by a father’s love and those who stepped up to the plate to be a father or a father figure to those who needed one. As always, we welcome your questions and comments at foreveryoung@hometownnewsol.co m.

do not have a typical father in any aspect. My Dad, Nestor, was not home every night, because he was a pilot and flew for days and weeks at a time. When I was younger, I hated it. I never understood why he had to leave as much as he did. I dreaded seeing him pack up his suitcase and would cry when he would leave. I remember walking my dad out of the house when he left when I was young, and I would stand there trying to choke back tears. He would look at me and say, “Honey, don’t cry. You’ll make me sad.” As I grew older, I understood why he did it and grew to admire him for it. He would leave, even when he didn’t want to or when he didn’t have the energy. He wanted to make sure we had food on the table, that my brother and I could go on field trips and that he could help me pay for school. When I was born, my parents drove a Ford Bronco II. It was the car that they picked me up in when I came home from the hospital. When I was learning to drive, I also learned how to drive stick shift. Not something most women, or even a lot of guys, know how to do. Thanks to my mom and dad, I learned how to drive with a stick shift, and I learned on that very same Ford Bronco II that brought me home from the hospital. I love that car. Everything about it reminds me of my childhood when I think of it and when I see it, I feel an instant pang of nostalgia. I remember my dad driving it all the time when I was little, and one of my favorite pictures of the two of us is with the

Father and son continues history “I don’t think he really understood how much I was listening to him... I listened and remembered everything.” -Fritz Ayers Sevin Bullwinkle/staff photographer

Fred Ayres, founder and owner of Conchy Joe’s with son Fredric “Fritz” Ayres, standing behind Conchy Joe’s in Jensen Beach on Thursday, May 9 By Brittany Llorente Foreveryoung@homtownnewsol.com

JENSEN BEACH — When Fred Ayres, owner of Conchy Joe’s Seafood, was sailing back up from the Keys, he took sight of a bit of land in Palm Beach and Conchy Joe’s was born. In 1983, the restaurant was relocated to its present site in Jensen Beach and has grown to be one of the most talked about restaurants on the Treasure Coast. From father to son, the restaurant is now run by Fred’s son Fritz, who has taken the reigns of the restaurant and spurred it forward and onward in success. Fred said that one of his favorite memories of Fritz in the restaurant was watching him clean out the

trash cans in the August heat. It was equally one of Fritz’s least favorite memories, but working from a young age taught Fritz all of the aspects of a restaurant and what happens from the time a customer walks in the door, sits, eats and leaves, and every person involved in the process. “It’s kind of nerve-wracking running the place, but it’s really, really exciting,” said Fritz. “It’s a huge opportunity for me.” Fritz practically grew up in the restaurant, and from a child wanted to a part of the restaurant business. A lot of the employees who still work at the restaurant were there when he first started bussing tables.

He watched his father run the business, the way he interacted with the customers and how he kept the same ideals with the same laid-back Florida atmosphere. “It’s weird, because ever since I was really young, he knew I had an interest in business and he unloaded on me the good and the bad,” Fritz said. “I don’t think he really understood how much I was listening to him. Now, he tells me stories and they’re ones that he’s told me five times before and I realize I listened and remembered everything.” Stepping into his father’s role more and more has had its challenges, and he still practices his

father’s lessons while being his own person. “Truth is, we’re ultimately different,” Fritz said. “My dad has definitely helped to point out the ways that you could be taken advantage of in business. Rather than having to make those mistakes, he’s helped me to keep from making my own mistakes. If I call him up and tell him what is happening, he can give me so many stories of similar instances and how it turned out.” Fritz will have his own stories soon and the restaurant thrives every day and night. Most of all, it continues to be as wonderful as a slice of Key lime pie on a hot summer day.

MENTORING

Helping those who need guidance By Brittany Llorente ForeverYoung@hometownnewsol.com

INDIANTOWN – When helping children and teens is your call in life, there is no better place than to turn to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County. In 1991, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County was formed. Now, consisting of five branches, the program is able to assist more than 3,000 youth from ages six to 18 years. Alex Soares, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County’s Indiantown operations director, is a father and a mentor to not only his children, but the many in his club. Mr. Soares said it was a humbling experience knowing that they look up to him and that he knows he is helping them grow not only academ-

ically, but also in life. ”The children are our responsibility whether or not they have a solid family structure at home or not,” said Mr. Soares. “When I allow myself to speak about it, it’s touching to know that these kids are looking up to me for the right advice or the right decisions. Just to be there and for me to help them whether they are having a good day or a bad day makes a difference.” Especially during their high school years, where peer pressure is prevalent, it is important for children to have someone to talk to, a place to do their homework and socialize in a healthy environment. “It has become vital more than ever,” Mr. Soares said. “Parents are

There are a lot of organized events on the weekends, but afterschool it is important because that’s when they do their homework, and when there is no one at home to help them, we are here to help them and work with the kids.” The Boys & Girls Clubs also form strong relationships with the schools and school system to help the children academically. Other areas of impact include good character, citizenship, helping around the club and community, building character traits and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “All of these things are now very important for a child to succeed in life, and more and more they’re not

DINING

MARTIN COUNTY — There’s not too much more that spells old-fashioned Americana than hamburgers and rock and roll. Maybe that’s why dining at Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries in the Treasure Coast Mall seemed like a trip inside a time capsule to a 50s era diner with great food, groovy tunes and super-sweet desserts. When my dining companion and I walked toward the mall on Saturday afternoon, we noticed the throngs of movie goers and thought, ‘what an ideal location for a burger place.’ With a walk-up window outside the mall across from the movie theatre, a walk-up area inside, and inside seating in a secluded area that’s ideal for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of walking the mall, Hwy 55 seems to have all aspects of ‘eating at the mall’ covered. But, it’s much more than that. The ‘burger place’ is a restaurant, with friendly waitresses and plenty of seating, coupled with a full menu of delicious diner food. “There are 120 Hwy 55 Burgers in North Carolina,” said Joe Scheibelhut, restaurant manager. “After being in construction for 30 years, I used to eat at Hwy 55 Burgers all the time in North Carolina. When this franchise opportunity came up, my wife and I jumped at the chance to open the first one in Florida. When this spot opened up in the mall, we knew it was perfect.” Patrons can seat themselves at the bar in front of the restaurant with a bird’s-eye view of the grill or in one of the many booths that line the Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presleyadorned walls. We were lucky to get to the hot spot before the lunch crowd arrived, and it was obvious by the time we left that they were in for a busy afternoon. “We get a lot of people coming in for lunch right before going to watch an afternoon movie or vice versa,”

Burgers, wings and fries, oh my

Staff photo by Anna-Marie Menhenott

The staff at Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries is eager to serve guests a great meal. From left: Lizzy Schuck, Aralys Montes, Joe Scheibelhut, manager; Rebekah Cox and Deven Schwindt. Mr. Scheibelhut said. “There’s always a nice crowd in here.” While enjoying a cool fountain soda and listening to old rock and roll tunes, we looked over the menu. We noticed that besides burgers by the dozen, made every way you can imagine, there were wings, cheesesteaks, grilled cheese sandwiches and a shrimp po’ boy. One thing I noticed throughout the menu was the ‘John Boy & Billy’ sauce that topped everything from chicken sandwiches to shrimp burgers to wings. We couldn’t pass up the chance to see what the fuss was about, so we ordered wings with the specialty sauce. To accompany our wings, we tried the highly recommended cheesesteak and of course, a cheeseburger. During the quick wait for our food, we were treated to a sample of frozen custard. The creamy dessert is made fresh daily and can be combined with a number of sweet treats… but, more on that after lunch. Our food came out steaming hot and smelling incredible. I couldn’t wait to try the John Boy & Billy sauce

on the wings. The sauce was everything I hoped for. There was just enough barbeque taste to bring in a smoky flavor, but after a bite or two, the heat from the peppers gives the sauce a nice kick. I imagine this sauce on any of the sandwiches would be a nice addition. Our burgers were singles, but they can be ordered as doubles or triples. The burgers were cooked from fresh meat and grilled to perfection. They came with a lettuce and tomato and were served with topping choices of chili, coleslaw, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo and pickles. The burgers were mouthwatering and the accompanying French fries were just as delicious. Our cheesesteak was big enough for two and was full of peppers, onions, mushrooms, melted provolone cheese and served on a steamed hoagie roll. There’s no wonder why this is one of the most popular items on the menu. After enjoying our lunch, both food and atmosphere, we decided to head to the mall to walk around. As we See BURGERS, Page 9

were leaving, we were given one of the incredible frozen custard desserts to take with us. The ‘concrete’ contains three scoops of frozen vanilla custard, mixed with toppings such as cookies and cream, Butterfinger, pineapple, gummy bears or mixed nuts. Our dessert was mixed with cookies and cream and was a delightful end to an incredible lunch. Other sweet treats include milkshakes made with fresh frozen custard and fresh strawberries or bananas and chocolate-covered pretzels. Next time we head to the mall or to the movies, we’ll make sure to make time for a visit to Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries. What an incredible way to spend a day!

T

he year was 1973 when I proclaimed, “I want to be a Rock Star!” I had just listened to Deep Purple’s ‘Made in Japan’ for the very first time, and I have to think that just about every 14-year-old boy and a few girls made the same statement I did. Perhaps a few of you actually had success in music. In the 40 years since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to have been involved in music in some fashion, either as a performer in bar bands, garage bands and a few original music projects. I’ve even had some radio play over the years as well. After so many years of trying to be the aforementioned rock star, alas, it was not meant to be. I still have a bunch of guitars and would play from time to time, but it can be

quite frustrating, even boring, to play music all alone. What’s one to do? I still enjoy making music. I still wish to write and perform, but who has the time, never mind the stamina, to do so. With life’s general responsibilities such as family, work and all that goes with it, leaves very little time to do it. The commitment to play in a band became too much, so I hung it up, put the guitars away in the basement and that was that. In 2007, I found myself wanting to pick up the guitar again. I practiced any chance I could, but it became a chore and seemed like I was playing

for just for the sake of playing. Now, I’m a decent songwriter, guitarist and singer, or so I think so, but I kept getting stuck when composing music, and forgetting that cool chord progression I just learned. What I needed was a recording studio (but the cost was out of reach) or some way to record in my home. I had a beat up old four-track cassette recorder I used back in the 80’s to make my demo tapes. After dusting it off, I discovered it just was not doing the trick for me. I then found out about a new way to record music using my computer. Digital Audio Workstations, or DAWs, had been around for a while, but I had thought I needed to be a recording engineer to use the stuff. After a bit of Internet research, I learned that one did not need to be See MUSIC, Page 10

an expert programmer to use this new-fangled software. So, for less than $300, I dove in and made a purchase. It only took a few hours to figure out how to configure the program and hardware. Not only did it allow me to record my guitar and vocals, but the software came with thousands of sounds, from strings to drum tracks.

The result? I now have a full band in my living room! I bought the Digital Audio Workstation, which is a complete recording studio in software, complete with unlimited tracks, audio effects and exporting capabilities, all for $100. I also bought a piece of hardware; the Audio Interface for $100. This is the ‘engine,’ or the link between your guitar, vocals and keyboards, which allows your instrument to link up to your computer. The last purchase was a MIDI controller for $99. MIDI allows multiple instruments to be played from a single controller, which in my case, was a 49-key model. It looks and works just like a piano or an electronic keyboard, but has no sound. I get the “sounds” from my DAW, which has thousands of sounds, all of which can be controlled by my keyboard. I play the bass and drum parts on the keyboard, along with any other sounds I need to add. So, for the small sum of money, I have a home record-

ing studio. What used to cost a lot of both money and time can now be done in the comfort of your basement or spare room. The quality can be fantastic, depending on how far you wish to go with additional gear. With the gear I have, the recordings are of CD quality and exported to MP3 format for playback on any digital music player. The best part of all, this is how you can enjoy making music again for a reasonable investment, with the quality of a professional recording studio. All this is done by digital format versus analog or magnetic tape. I purchased an entry-level setup as I did not know if I could get the get the hang of it. I have since upgraded my set up. One can spend upward of $10,000 and up for a professional set up. With a computer and some gear from your local music store, you too can have a decent way to record music in your own home. It’s not overly difficult to figure out as long as

you have a modicum of computer skills. A Macintosh machine comes with Apple’s ‘Garage Band’ pre-installed. I won’t go into brands this round, but in future articles, we’ll delve into the process of home recording and include some of the premier manufacturers of recording products. We’ll also answer the question, “OK, I finished my song, now what do I do with it?” There’s so much you can now do with your songs by using the Internet. It’s a big musical world out there and we can bring it right into your living room, up to collaborating with likedminded musicians all over the world! So, whether you’re 30 or 70 (I’m 53), dust off that Strat or Les Paul, warm up those vocal chords and make some music! Steve Gardner is a professional musician and award-winning recording artist.
