Learning to enjoy service to the community

I

spent a lot of my young life trying to avoid volunteering. Aside from sports, the profile in my high school yearbook is void of any clubs or other activities. I did not volunteer for the U.S. Army, but was drafted during the Vietnam War. As a soldier, I made every effort to get lost in the sea of olive drab that surrounded me. Each morning a sergeant would assign various jobs. When he yelled your name, you were expected to take a step forward and sound off. With around 200 in line whenever he yelled “Smith,” it was my ploy to sit tight. In a group like that, there was always more Smiths. Even if I was the one the sergeant was looking for, he wouldn’t quibble when someone else stepped forward. I made an art of blending in. Sometime in my late 30s, I joined the Volusia Region of the Antique

Automobile Club of America. My goal there was also to keep a low profile. I had always been a fan of the automobile and my purpose for joining the AACA was to glean restoration knowledge from the walking mechanical encyclopedias that was the membership. For 10 years or so I was able to maintain a respectable invisibility in the club. I never ran for any office or headed up an event. There would come a time in the mid 1990s when I would agree to assist big Nick Uhl in organizing the historic Ormond Beach Birthplace Of Speed Antique Car Show and Parade on Thanksgiv-

ing weekend. That would not be a breach of my security for Nick was a large, gregarious fellow and I knew I could fit comfortably in his shadow. I would be able to help him and remain mostly anonymous to the chamber of commerce that was fronting the car events for the city. At my very first meeting something would happen that would change my life forever. Nick and I sat at a large oaken table with about a dozen members of the business community. The meeting was run by John Connors, the executive director of the Ormond Beach Chamber Of Commerce. As the group discussed the trivialities involved in the staging of a car show and parade, I may have allowed my own mind to zone out a little. After all I knew my job was to be Nick’s gofer. At one point Mr. Conners mentioned the parade on Friday and the

car show on Saturday was fine but we needed something to do on Sunday. No one had a suggestion. I don’t know why I chose that moment to wake up, but I offered that some time ago the event had included old cars racing on the beach. Looking back I don’t know why Nick had not been the one to make that suggestion for he had been one of the beach racers I referred to. As it turned out John Conners liked the idea and said that I would be in charge of that. Say what? Aside from Nick I don’t think anyone at the table knew my name, but now I was in charge of something — a volunteer. When the event rolled around, the beach races were a moderate success and I was surprised to learn I enjoyed being the guy in charge. Soon after that, big Nick Uhl passed away from a heart attack and I was See LANDLINES, Page 5

You don’t have to look very far if you want to get involved in your community. We try to publish the long list of volunteer opportunities from the United Way each month and it is loaded with suggestions. Another way is to join one of the great organizations in CECIL G. BRUMLEY East Volusia MANAGING EDITOR County. In Hometown News, information about them is in our Community Notes and throughout the publication each week. It doesn’t take much to volunteer. There are agencies and programs that need a couple of hours of assistance each week. But if you want to really get involved, there are a lot of agencies and programs that need full-time volunteers and leaders. Great communities are built largely on how much residents are willing to volunteer their time to making things better. You can always tell a community that has a high degree of volunteerism. They look a little cleaner and seem to have lots of stuff to do. In this issue, Dan Smith talks about how he became a volunteer, which resulted in Ormond Beach having the great Birthplace of Speed events and a strong historical society. While Dan may be modest about his contributions, it means a lot. So, we hope you enjoy reading comments from area volunteers and that you can find your niche in the community.

Want to Down Size? Want to Sell Now? Integrity Home Loan has a unique Reverse Mortgage Solution for Active Adults Who Want to Sell Their Home New Smyrna Beach, Fla. --- Glenn Russell through Integrity Home Loan of Central Florida has a unique solution for active adults who need to sell their family home in order to retire to Florida: a reverse mortgage will give them the cash now to invest in a retirement home.

072860

September 2013

Glenn Russell, NMLS#224836, a reverse mortgage specialist representing Integrity Home Loan of Central Florida working from his East Volusia office, said that for some active adults a reverse mortgage makes the perfect solution. “Many active adults have put off retirement until they can sell their home up north and use the proceeds to buy a retirement home in Florida,” Russell said. “A reverse mortgage can make a great deal of sense,” Russell explained. “They can use the cash to buy a retirement home now instead of waiting until the real estate market fully recovers,” he said. Homes that are currently listed for sale won’t qualify. But the solution to that dilemma is simple, Russell said. “To qualify for a reverse mortgage the home must be removed from the MLS listing of homes for sale,” Russell explained. “After the reverse mortgage is approved, the home can be placed on the market for sale again,” he said. “Once you move into a retirement home, it becomes a primary residence and it qualifies for a reverse mortgage,” Russell said. “And the owner can use the reverse mortgage money to start enjoying their retirement now,” he added. Reverse mortgages may not work for everyone, Russell cautioned. Generally speaking, reverse mortgages have suffered the same fate as the housing market. “The amount of equity available to a senior home owner has been affected by the general decline in housing values. In some cases that loss of equity is too much for the program to work,” Russell said. “However, working with their financial advisors, we can develop attractive alternatives. Many homeowners are choosing to eliminate their monthly mortgage expenses and take advantage of reverse mortgages,” he said. Russell said the reverse mortgage option is one solution to the retirement dilemma that should be considered with trusted financial advisors. “For couples who are in the right position, a reverse mortgage can pave the way to their dream of Florida retirement, or retirement anywhere else,” Russell said.

Volunteers Make a Difference

By Jacque Estes For Forever Young

There is always something interesting to do if you are a volunteer in Volusia County. Volunteers are needed for every skill imaginable from reading to children to walking dogs and delivering meals on wheels. ReadingPals is one of the newer programs actively recruiting volunteers to read to and mentor pre-K and first grade students. “Volunteers go into the school setting and read to children,” said Diane Olsen, director of Volunteer Engagement for United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. “We really get that mentorship and the children get comfortable and look forward to their mentor coming.” Other volunteer opportunities are more flexible concerning the hours needed. Cindy Gambrell and Bruce Fleischman, two retired Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputies, chose the Halifax Humane Society as their first foray into volunteering. They chose volunteer duties with flexible hours to be available for their softball and bowling teams and family. “We wanted to do something to give back to the community,” Ms. Gambrell said. “We both like animals so we figured the humane society would be the best place to go.” The couple’s volunteer duties range from washing the dogs, taking dogs to humane society events and getting the dogs out of their kennels to walk around the shelter grounds. “Some days you’re tired, but I think you benefit by being outside with the dogs. We’ve helped get some dogs adopted and that’s a good feeling,” Ms. Gambrell said. To ensure they have informed volunteers, many groups have training programs for specific duties. ReadingPals offers training prior to the school year and adds

The United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties assists many local non-profit organizations get the

word out as to what volunteer skills are needed. “We are the middle man,” Ms. Olsen said. “People who want to volunteer and don’t know what they want to do can come to us.” Cory and Eddie Manthei, retired police officers from Minnesota,

have been volunteering in Volusia County for the past six years. “We come from law enforcement and we know we have to be active in the community in other positive ways,” Mr. Manthei said. The couple are familiar faces during Race Weeks, helping with parking at the Target and also with the DeLand Elks Lodge. According to Cory, volunteering has been a family affair all of her life. “It’s got to be in my blood,” she said. “It’s how my parents met when they were volunteering in the Scouts.” Like her parents, the couple is drawn to youth programs. “Youth-oriented programs are very important,” Ms. Manthei said. “We work with the Police Explorer program in DeLand.” It’s not all about giving. Ms. Manthei said they have benefited from helping others. “It’s making a commitment to the community and it was a way to meet people after moving here from Minnesota,” she said. “You find places you normally wouldn’t hear about that need assistance.” Rick Weiss divides his volunteer energy between the ARC of Volusia and the United Way. “I try to make myself available for what their needs are,” he said. “When I retired I found I needed to do something to get out of my wife’s hair.” For Mr. Weiss, the schedule that fits him best is 12 hours over two days each week, which he spends providing administrative assistance. “The primary reason I started to work was because I needed to be active and use my mind. I give back and stay healthy,” Mr. Weiss said. “I find helping others has been very rewarding for me. six hours on Thursdays, although she also helps out with fundraisers when needed. “I think the main reason I’ve continued to work there is because I am really impressed with the dedication of the employees there. I am proud to contribute to their efforts and be a part of it,” Ms. Herold said. Working in the volunteer center, Ms. Herold helps the staff with the placement of others interested in volunteering. “Different people have different skills they want to utilize to be part of the community,” Ms. Herold said. “I follow up with the agencies to see what happens after we have referred a volunteer to the agency and keep track of volunteer hours.” It’s all about doing what you love. “You have to volunteer where you feel you have the ability. I have office

and computer abilities and have helped with fundraisers,” Ms. Herold said. “After you fill out the application or talk to Diane, we connect you with the agency and tell you the person to contact at the agency.” Ms. Herold said the United Way has matched up many volunteers over the years and a good percentage of the volunteers have continued working. “It depends on their interest to start with. People have different motivations,” she said. “Some find they don’t want to do it and others have found very rewarding jobs.” Ms. Herold recommends anyone interested in volunteering in the area to go to the United Way website: http://www.unitedwayvfc.org/VolunteerCenter/. “You can find all kinds of different opportunities and, if they have a computer, they can go online. If not, they can call Diane Olsen,” Ms. Herold said. “Diane can usually

steer people in the right direction if they aren’t sure of where they want to volunteer. She asks them questions to feel them out to see what interests, strengths and limits are.” Improved physical and mental heath are also benefits according to Ms. Herold who also goes to the gym multiple times a week. “I moved here 10 years ago and I am much stronger physically than when I moved here. Going to the gym and going to volunteer have made the difference,” Ms. Herold said. “Seniors or younger people who have health problems, can get depressed. Once you start going and help other people, that helps you. Helping anyone else makes you feel you are contributing and helps your own mental health well being. Mrs. Manthei summed up the general sentiment of those who volunteer their time: “It’s a ‘do something daily’ type of thing. Everyone helps out and it makes things a little better.”

People volunteering more than ever at both ends ... young volunteers with limited skills looking to improve upon them for employment opportunities. Others are skilled volunteers that are unemployed or underemployed keeping their resume active. Q. Are you seeing younger volunteers due to unemployment? Obviously they are still looking for work. Is a temporary volunteer beneficial to an organization? A. We see volunteers of all ages impacted by unemployment. Temporary volunteers are always helpful. However, it gets tricky because background screenings are costly as well as staff time training a volunteer that is temporary. Q. Are people volunteering at nonprofit organizations in hopes of getting a foot in the door for employment? A. Yes, as well as interns. At the

United Way, we recently hired our intern. Q. Are their health and social benefits to volunteering? A. Absolutely! Organizations that have employee volunteer programs have greater morale, less sick days and feel a greater connection to their organization. For seniors, it helps alleviate depression, gives them a sense of purpose and keeps them active. There have also been studies conducted that prove individuals that regularly volunteer have decreased risk of high blood pressure, which impacts heart attack rates. See the link. “Volunteering Linked With Lower Risk Of High Blood Pressure,” huffingtonpost.com /.../volunteering-blood-pressurehyper... Q. Do volunteers really make that See VOLUNTEER Q&A, Page 8

big a difference to an organization? A. Yes! “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless” — Sherry Anderson. The estimated value of volunteer time for 2012 is $22.14 per hour. The estimate helps acknowledge the millions of individuals who dedicate their time, talents and energy to making a difference. Charitable organizations can use this estimate to quantify the enormous value volunteers provide. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, about 64.3 million Americans, or 26.8 percent of the adult population, gave 7.9 billion hours of volunteer service worth $171 billion in 2011. For the latest information, please see www.volunteeringinamerica.gov Q. Is a volunteer who can only work an hour or two a week really helpful to an organization? A. Yes, a perfect example would be ReadingPals. Volunteers are in the classroom one hour a week. Also, mentoring opportunities are usually just an hour or two. However, these type of volunteer opportunities often require longterm commitment.

These were once thought to be conditions of the 40- to 50-yearold age group, but not anymore. Fortunately, in some cases, it can be controlled with diet, exercise, herbs and supplements. Proper diet helps regulate blood sugar levels; eating more foods with a low glycemic index affects the rate at which food is turned into glucose. Foods that are higher in the glycemic index raise your blood sugar levels and stress your pancreas, forcing your body to produce more fat, causing you to gain weight. Step into Vincenzo’s Cafe & Bakery at 541 Beville Road and your eyes will most likely immediately be drawn to a raised, glass-covered dessert bar encompassing two sides of the service area. Behind the glass is an incredible assortment of desserts from bakery-style chocolate chip to biscotti, raspberry sticks with almonds, sfogliatelle, cream puffs and more. They are baked fresh and by hand by owner Vinny Graceffo. While he includes the favorites like tiramisu and eclairs, he also continually adds new desserts. This is a man who loves to cook, arriving at 4 a.m. every day, except Sunday, to begin his baking. “I bake from about 4 to 9:30 or 10

every morning,” Mr. Graceffo said. “The Sfogiatelle takes three days to make.” Fighting the urge to eat dessert first, my husband and I were seated and focused on the menu, also filled with fresh, homemade Italian specialties. We both decided to order the house specials, Chicken & Mushroom Alfredo for me and Zuppa de Pesce for him. Prior to the main course, we enjoyed a crisp garden salad with the house Italian dressing and a loaf of bread made that morning. I generally try not to fill up on bread, but this was too delicious to resist. Mr. Graceffo is hoping the word gets out that his “cafe” is actually a restaurant with a full and diverse menu. “In Italy, a small restaurant is a cafe,” he said. “People are thinking

eaten hand-rolled pasta and there was a wonderful taste and texture not found in commercially processed pasta. The Zuppa de Pesce included mussels, clams, calamari, scallops and shrimp with the choice of marinara or bianco sauce. My husband chose the bianco and was quite pleased. As with many chefs, Mr. Graceffo’s culinary education began in his mother’s kitchen. “Ever since I was a child, four years old, I would sit up on the table and my mother had me make meatballs,” he said. His mother also would take him to bakeries, but it wasn’t until a cousin, who worked in a bakery, took him into the back room did his interest ignite. “I started baking at 14 and never stopped,” he said. Cigars can be misunderstood

WINE

069034

Like wines and women, cigars are often overrated and misunderstood. To enjoy a truly fine wine, you must understand the nuances behind the slight flavors and the techniques behind the bottling. To appreciate a beautiful woman, you have to factor in whether or not you can indeed enjoy gazing upon her face when she opens her mouth and

words tumble forth. The key to cigars is to find the complimentary beverage, the atmosphere and environment in which you are smoking and most importantly, the time involved. You need not light up a 20-dollar bill to find something supreme. You need only these key elements and a faithful guide to help you enjoy what life has to offer — not a guide who will sell you a Tour de Swamp in Central Florida. One of the most difficult things about knowing there is a cigar waiting for me is resisting reading the history of the brand. However, inevitably, someone has a “spoiler” for me that describes the flavors and nuances of the stick, which is the part I find to be most enjoyable. It

is a personal competition with myself to name every note I find and I take great pride in surveying the Internet afterward to find validation. On occasion I will disagree with the official description, as I do below, however, one of the most beautiful things about a cigar is the way a drink can alter the perception. Claiming no expertise and only a well-honed appreciation for the finest life has to offer, I begin my quest with a Rocky Patel Freedom and poured a tempranillo, claiming our usual Adirondacks on the patio late in the evening, when the air is most still ideal for enjoying the scents. Once it was trimmed and lit for me by my obliging husband, I took my first draw and was shocked — mildly put off, to be honest. It was stronger than I normally like and very sharp. I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue and almost reverted to a tried and true favorite, but buttoned down the hatches, sipped my wine and put

on my game face. After a few moments, it seemed to mellow a smidgen and I began to really get a feel for the flavors which were largely espresso according to Rocky Patels web description. However, I disagree. I judged it to be more aptly described as a buttery Italian leather. The coffee notes were there without a doubt, but I felt a very smooth leather quality to the smoke foremost. I also am willing to swear to a very mild cocoa undertone almost overwhelmed by the spiciness it had to offer on the front end. The cigar was too big for my wine and while I appreciated the fruity aspect it highlighted in my drink, I think a bolder red would have faired better. From a male perspective, my husband did not care for the Patel and never got past its sharpness, thinking it acrid. I, however, enjoyed it tremendously and may have to smoke this $78 dollar treat again.
