Putting idle hands to work

WRITER/PRODUCTION COORDINATOR BRITTANY A. LLORENTE

There were those who weren’t interested, some who didn’t see the point in learning, but some stuck around… even those who originally shook their head at the idea. The project was a simple one, but it gave the teenagers I worked with a sense of accomplishment. They were able to finish the works of art in a very short amount of time. The works were displayed in the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

As the parents were guided down the halls of the museum to see the works, some dragged to the art pieces, it gave me a moment to step back and see what had happened. I had been a part of it. Some of them won awards, some didn’t, but each was proud of their works that they accomplished individually and together. Some of those works hang in the Vero Beach Boys and Girls Club to this day. I still see some of the teens, much older now, getting married and working jobs to pay rent. When they see me they wave,

talk to me and say, “Remember that art that I did?” I blush, laugh, nod and say “Yes.” Again reminded and flooded with a warmth that I had touched their life in some way or another. That feeling… that warmth is the reward for hours spent with them. It continues to this day. In our community there are so many opportunities to volunteer time to help someone. This issue of Forever Young gives a few ideas of places that would be a great place to volunteer. We here at Forever Young encourage all of you to spend some time out in the community to make an impact and leave your mark on a life. As always, we welcome your questions and opinions at foreveryoung@hometownnewsol.com.

ith as much time as we all spend running around, doing errands, working and taking care of those we love, spare time doesn’t usually come into play. For those who need help, whether it is an animal, child or the elderly, the few moments of your day that you spare to help them are priceless. Sometimes, what you get back, though not monetary, can be more rewarding than any dollar amount. The sense of being able to help someone other than your self can be incredible. A few years ago, at the Youth Volunteer Corps in Vero Beach, I spent some time helping children paint.

Last year, the show featured approximately 400 volunteers, who, she said, contributed 2,080 hours of time to the festival. On April 26-27, 2014, the Melbourne Art Festival will celebrate its 30th anniversary, which is quite a feat for a show that started with humble ambitions and is run entirely by volunteers. Each of these volunteers, who come from a variety of backgrounds, take pride in the group’s mission to organize, promote and encourage artistic endeavors, education and appreciation within the community. Johana Gant, a member and secretary of the Festival’s Board of Directors and chairwoman of the volunteer committee, said it’s the hundreds of behind-the-scene helpers, who help attract the nearly 50,000 visitors to enjoy the work of 250 artists from around the country

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteers ‘sea ‘ turtles differently Sea Turtle Preservation Society volunteer Elaine Lennon of Melbourne keeps a close eye on a green turtle last year, as it made its way toward the ocean in south Cocoa Beach. The turtle hatchlings journey from their nests to the ocean, allowing them to imprint on their home beach.

By Dan McDonald Foreveryoung@homtownnewsol.com

Although they don’t know for sure if the sea turtles that frequent Brevard’s beaches are making a slow, but steady, come back from the brink of extinction, there remains a growing group of local volunteers, who have dedicated their time and energy to preserving the endangered giants. Dave Cheney, a member of the Board of Directors for the Indialantic-based Sea Turtle Preservation Society, said his group has more than 600 members – 100 of whom are really active in working to nudge the gentle creatures away from the abyss. “For 2012, we computed that our members spent more than 22,657 hours of volunteer work, helping sea turtles survive,” said Mr. Cheney, who has been a member of the society for six years. “In dollars, at $12 an hour, we estimate our members gave $271,884 of value toward that goal.” That is a major contribution, Mr. Cheney said. “Our group wouldn’t survive without the dedication of our volunteers, and without our group, it’s very possible sea turtles themselves wouldn’t survive,” he added. That bold statement is borne out by some of the staggering statistics that place Brevard County at ground zero in the struggle to get sea turtles off the threatened or the endangered species list. For example, 90 percent of all loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the United States takes place on Florida’s beaches. And of Florida’s 27 waterfront counties, reporting loggerhead nests in 2012, none came close to the 33,799 nests in Brevard. The same can be said for green turtles, in which the 4,425 local nests claimed more than 40 percent of the entire state’s activity. Only the rarer leatherback – the last of the common breeds using

Florida beaches – found better nesting outside Space Coast waters. Still, with 91 leatherback nests, Brevard trailed only St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties in total nest activity, Mr. Cheney said. It is because of Brevard’s significance with the ongoing battle to save sea turtles that led one of the society’s active volunteers to build her own nest along the Space Coast. Ann Zscheile grew up in Kansas before moving to Albuquerque, N.M., where she raised two daughters and spent 41 years as a nurse before retiring. “I can’t even tell you for sure how I became so attracted to sea turtles,” Ms. Zscheile said. “Probably from watching a Jacque Cousteau special or something like that. I only know I’ve always been fascinated by sea turtles and knew I wanted to work with them once I retired. But I didn’t have a real clear plan. Then, my brother happened to move to Brevard.” The grandmother of two said she made her first visit to Florida in 1998 to visit her brother, and while driving through Indialantic, saw the Sea Turtle Preservation Society sign along A1A. “At that time, I really didn’t know the importance of Brevard to sea turtles,” she said. “One stop in the office opened my eyes. I joined STPS on the spot, and in 2006, I retired and moved here permanently, so I could become active with sea turtles. I’ve been working with STPS ever since.” Mrs. Zscheile said she has worked in all three of the main areas permitted to local volunteers by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: night walks, strandings and nest surveys. She has also volunteered in the STPS gift shop, worked with educational programs for students and condominium residents

File art and even ran in the group’s largest fundraising event, the annual Turtle Krawl 5K race, scheduled, this year, for Sept. 14. Even more impressive, she has written and produced a book, ‘Wilbur the Washback Sea Turtle,’ which details the many obstacles facing a sea turtle hatchling, in which only an estimated one in 1,000 will live the 30-plus years to sexual maturity. The book is sold in the STPS gift shop, and she donates all proceeds back to the society. Currently, Mrs. Zscheile volunteers to patrol 4.5 miles of Cocoa Beach two times a week, counting and marking nesting sites and recording false crawls, in which turtles return to the ocean without actually nesting. “We excavate the empty nests with our hands and count the eggs, which

typically number from 80 to 120, depending on the species, and record and report how many turtles actually got out of the nests, as hatchlings,” Ms. Zscheile said. “It’s always something different. Recently we’ve found fire ants destroying eggs. Sometimes it’s raccoons, or other animals.” Her work is definitely time consuming, but Ms. Zscheile said there’s nothing she enjoys more. “When I lived in the desert of New Mexico, I never could have imagined I’d be so active in working with sea turtles,” she said. “For me, I’m living out a lifelong dream. I’ve always wanted to do it. I feel privileged to be able to help in some small way.” For more information about the Sea Turtle Preservation Society, visit www.seaturtlespacecoast.org.

Councilman sets record for service to community By Dan McDonald ForeverYoung@hometownnewsol.com

Jim Nolan, Sr., was honored at the Florida League of Cities’ Annual Conference in August for racking up an impressive 20 years of uninterrupted service on the Indian Harbour Beach City Council – making him the longest-serving official in the town’s 58-year history. “Jim was first elected to the council in 1993, and in November, that will be 20 years in office,” said City Manager Jackie Burns, who has held her own office since 1995. “Jim also holds the record for having served as mayor of Indian Harbour Beach longer than anyone else – nearly six and a half years.” Indian Harbour Beach council members are not paid, Ms. Burns

Jim Nolan, Sr said. “They do run for office, but it is very much a volunteer job, and Jim is a perfect example of a dedicated volunteer,” she said. “As long as I’ve

known him, he has always been volunteering in one thing or another. He has always had a desire for helping others and the community, and it shows. He’s a remarkable asset to our city.” Serving on the city council is just one of the ways 79-year-old beachside resident has volunteered since moving to Brevard County in the mid-1960s, where he worked for Northrop Grumman at the Cape during the Apollo Mission, before moving on to Harris Corporation. He is also a former member of the city’s Planning and Zoning Board, served for two years on the city’s Civil Service Board and is past president of IHB Football.

For many years, he worked with Little League as a coach, vice president, manager and chief umpire, overseeing the games at five different fields. Mr. Nolan, who retired from Harris Corporation in 1999, also spent 26 years serving on the Indian Harbour Beach Volunteer Fire Department, in which he served as fire chief from 1994 to 2000 until bad knees forced him to hang up his firefighting helmet. He was also president of the IHB Volunteer Fire Department Corporation twice, and named “IHB Firefighter of the Year” for two consecutive years, and was honored as the See COUNCILMAN, 11

WINES OF THE WORLD

ike wines and women, cigars are often overrated and misunderstood. To enjoy a truly fine wine, you must understand the nuances behind the slight flavors and the techniques behind the bottling. To appreciate a beautiful woman, you have to factor in whether or not you can indeed enjoy gazing upon her face when she opens her mouth and words tumble forth. The key to cigars is to find the complimentary beverage, the atmosphere and environment in which you are smoking and most importantly, the time involved. You need not light up a $20 bill to find something supreme! You need only these key elements and a faithful guide to help you enjoy what life has to offer- not a guide who will sell you a Tour de Swamp in Central Florida. One of the most difficult things about knowing there is a cigar waiting for me is resisting reading the history of the brand. However, inevitably,

someone has a ‘spoiler’ for me that describes the flavors and nuances of the stick which is the part I find to be most enjoyable! It is a personal competition with myself to name every note I find and I take great pride in surveying the internet afterward to find validation. On occasion I will disagree with the official description, as I do below, however, one of the most beautiful things about a cigar is the way a drink can alter the perception. Claiming no expertise and only a well-honed appreciation for the finest life has to offer, I begin my quest with a Rocky Patel Freedom and poured a tempranillo, claiming our usual Adirondacks on the patio late in the

evening, when the air is most stillideal for enjoying the scents. Once it was trimmed and lit for me by my obliging husband, I took my first draw and was shocked- mildly put off, to be honest! It was stronger than I normally like and very sharp. I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue and almost reverted to a tried and true favorite, but buckled down the hatches, sipped my wine and put on my game face. After a few moments, it seemed to mellow a smidgen and I began to really get a feel for the flavors which were largely espresso according to Rocky Patels`s web description. However, I disagree. I judged it to be more aptly described as a buttery Italian leather. The coffee notes were there without a doubt, but I felt a very smooth leather quality to the smoke foremost. I also am willing to swear to a very mild cocoa undertone almost overwhelmed by the spiciness it had to offer on the front end. The sharp

peppery flavors played out as the smoke wore on and became a smoother, but still snappy distraction complimentary to the earthiness of the second half. I must make mention of a hazelnut quality, which I thought was a real treat in the middle. Typically you find more walnut or almond notes in cigars- this was neither and I will stand by hazelnut as the kernel of choice. The cigar was too big for my wine and while I appreciated the fruity aspect it highlighted in my drink, I think a bolder red would have faired better. From a male perspective, my husband did not care for the Patel and never got past it’s sharpness, thinking it acrid. I, however, enjoyed it tremendously and may have to smoke this $7-8 dollar treat again. Audrey Gardner is a native Wisconsinite, whose pilgrimage to Vero Beach has allowed her to broaden her palate.

any people ask me why my husband and I picked the Treasure Coast when we moved to Florida. The answer is simple: it’s two hours to Disney World and two hours to Miami! I feel that we have the best of both worlds, with many wonderful stops in between. There is such an assortment of things to do here. You have farmers markets, nature preserves, beaches, theater, shopping, dining and sports. As a former New Yorker, what could be better than living near Tradition Field, home to the New York Mets’ Spring Training, and the St. Lucie Mets Minor League Team? Minutes off of I-95 in Port St. Lucie, this is a great place to spend an afternoon or evening. During the summer, Thursday night is $1 Hot Dog and $1 Beer Night. You can't beat that for an inexpensive form of entertainment. Parking is free, and the open seating tickets are very affordable. One of my absolute favorite ways to spend a Saturday morning is at the Downtown Fort Pierce Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon. We grab a danish and a cup of coffee and sit by the water before we explore all of the booths. Choose from pickles, produce, spices, danish, bread and multiple options for breakfast and lunch. Enjoy the music, as a local band plays, and walk across to the other side to check out all of the booths of crafts, jewelry, books and home furnishings. There are so many nature preserves in the area that offer hiking, canoe access, bird-watching and then some. There are selfguided trails, and you can go at your own pace. Some of the most

Along similar lines of the beautiful outdoors, the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens has a lake with a fountain, paved public paths, beautiful gardens, a pavilion, a gift shop and a special place for weddings. This beautiful sanctuary includes a butterfly garden, orchid room and rose garden. The Gardens also hosts a variety of children's programs, plant sales and the popular Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society concerts. The Heathcote Botanical Garden features, among other things, a beautiful bonsai garden, an herb garden and a reflection garden. They offer fun programs for children and adults. Many weddings take place here, and it is a lovely place to spend a peaceful afternoon. Tradition's Food Truck Invasion takes place the first and third Wednesday of the month from 5 to 9:30 p.m. in Tradition Square in Port St. Lucie. It is an outdoor picnic, where food trucks of different origins, cuisine and menus prepare food that is cooked to order. The prices are very reasonable, and I assure you that you will not leave hungry! Be sure to bring your folding chairs or blankets to have a picnic on the lawn in front of Tradition Town Hall. New ownership revamps pizza eatery

MELBOURNE — Entrepreneur and chef Charlie Marchica strives to treat every one of his customers like family. “They are all family,” he said. “I know almost all of my customers, or I get to know them if I don’t. I make sure everything is perfect, and, if they don’t like it, I’ll remake it until it is. I want them to feel comfortable, and I want them to feel like I am their cousin or brother.” Since taking over as owner of Genna Pizza Company five months ago, alongside his wife, Jeanine, Mr. Marchica, a Long Island native, has “gutted” everything from the former restaurant – changing the inside and all of the recipes to his liking to make for a better dining experience. It is with his commitment to treating his guests like family and renovating everything about the pizza establishment that makes Genna Pizza Company’s most important aspect all the more alluring – the food. “My pizzas are the best,” he said. “I buy premium ingredients for everything, and everything is made here in-house. My family is Italian on both sides. I had a guy from Sicily teach me how to make my dough, so I love Italian.” By purchasing premium ingredients and taking no shortcuts in delivering top-quality food, Mr. Marchica has created a variety of delicious pizza, with cheese that melts and delights taste buds, and uses Boar’s Head meats to give each slice an extra kick of freshness. However, the high quality of ingredients has no negative impact on his customers’ wallet. “I understand that people don’t want to spend a lot of money for dinner,” he said. “I don’t mind taking less on my end and giving my customers a real pizza for a decent price.”

At Genna Pizza Company, diners can choose from familiar favorites, such as cheese pizza and supreme pizzas, but, as Mr. Marchica said, what really separates the eatery from other pizza places is its variety of experimental pies. The Four Seasons-style pizza offers diners an experience of a variety of Italian toppings into one delicious blend, and the eatery’s white pizza is sure to satisfy the most vigorous pizza critic. And, if a diner isn’t in the mood for pizza, Genna Pizza Company also offers a variety of subs, including the delicious meatball sub, with melted cheese and homemade bread. At the end of a meal, diners can enjoy either an Italian staple, such as a cannoli, or a fantastic piece of

cheesecake. In the future, Mr. Marchica said he hopes to open a second restaurant, but, at the end of the day, the one thing he takes the most pride in is providing his customers at his current location with high-quality products at a low price. “There is just no reason to be like everyone else,” he said. Genna Pizza Company is located at 4301 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne and is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Delivery is free, with no minimum charge. which seem to be a problem for many diabetics. It was also found to significantly drop blood glucose levels, protecting the body from free radical damage, associated with diabetes. Fenugreek’s unique compounds surround fats and sugars, slowing down their absorption and making it great for weight reduction (this may be of help for many diabetics, who are having trouble losing weight), plus it contains amino acids, which stimulate production of insulin. There are other herbs that can be of benefit to Diabetics. Cinnamon helps lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol, plus it helps to stimulate metabolism. Devils Claw helps decrease blood sugar levels, helping curb sugar and carbohydrate cravings. Sandalwood helps to rejuvenate insulin production, the sulfur in onions and garlic have insulin-like actions, and they help to protect the circulatory system. Finally, Stevia helps control blood glucose levels, reducing glucagon, plus, it can be used as an artificial sweetener with no calories, no carbs and no sugar.

ith so many sugar-free products on the market, it is alarming how the rate of pre-Diabetes and Type II Diabetes is increasing. These were once thought to be conditions of the 40- to 50-year-old age group, but not anymore. Fortunately, in some cases, it can be controlled with diet, exercise, herbs and supplements. Proper diet helps regulate blood sugar levels; eating more foods with a low glycemic index affects the rate at which food is turned into glucose. Foods that are higher in the glycemic index raise your blood sugar levels and stress your pancreas, forcing your body to produce more fat, causing you to gain weight. This may be why 80 percent of Type II Diabetics are overweight. At the supermarket, watch for foods with fructose, sucrose, glucose or other forms of sugar on the labels; these get absorbed in the blood steam and turn into fat quickly. Gymnema has been used for more than 2,000 years in India for diabetes. In Sanskrit, it means “destroyer of sugar.” It stimulates the beta cells in the pancreas to produce insulin, and it slows down the absorption of glucose through the intestine. What most people like about this herb is that after you have tasted it, it blocks the taste of sweets. This can help curb your cravings of sweets and carbohydrates. Fenugreek has also been used for a long time and is well-documented. Studies found this herb to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol,

a great way to exercise. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild in Vero Beach and The Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce offer wonderful options when it comes to community theatre. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild offers main-stage productions, readers’ theatre productions, fundraising concerts, fundraising events and numerous workshops for adults and children. If you live in the area, plan ahead and set out to explore the area like a tourist. There are so many options to choose from, and if you need a break, every imaginable restaurant is available to grab a bite in between activities. volunteers,” Mrs. Gant said. “There’s no way. We’re lucky that so many people feel the same urge we do, and that is to make something special happen. Psychologist Dr. Judith Siegler, Ph.D., LMFT, and Director of Marriage and Family Therapy at the Center for Trauma Therapy in Indian Harbour Beach, said research has shown volunteers receive a myriad of benefits in place of dollars. “We often recommend that people volunteer,” Dr. Siegler said. “It’s a great way of boosting self-confidence, a way of gaining pride in an accomplishment and meeting new people and experiencing new things. It’s a safe and healthy way of breaking out of a rut or combating depression, sadness or loneliness. “It’s important that you have the ability to take care of yourself, as well, but when someone volunteers they’re automatically thinking of a larger issue than themselves,” she added. “It’s a great way of putting balance back into your life. On average, it’s a great tonic that helps people feel good about themselves.” Margo Acton, a New York native, agrees with that prescription. Ms. Acton became an art festival

“IHBFD Corporation Man of the Year” in 1988. “I guess I’ve always wanted to be involved in things,” said Mr. Nolan, who raised five children in the quaint city, alongside his wife of 42 years, Dorothy. “Being involved in the city is a great way of getting to know people and to help give something back. Now that I’m retired, it also gives me something to do. I don’t play golf or fish. I like to get up and go into City Hall most every day. I like to stay up on what’s happening in the community, and volunteering is a great way to do that. “We’re very lucky to live in IHB,” he said. “We have a very nice city, low crime. We have the ocean and beach and the river and fishing and great parks and recreation. Overall, we have a very calm and peaceful place to live.”

Mr. Nolan, whose wife passed away in February 2000, shares his home with a pet cat and said he hopes to continue serving on the Indian Harbour Beach City Council for some time to come. “Yeah, I don’t have any plans to quit or to step down,” he said. “I guess volunteering is something that is in my blood. I think everyone should be involved and offer their services to others.”

volunteer one year after to moving to Palm Bay upon retirement seven years ago. The mother of two and grandmother of four said she and the other festival volunteers take pride in the work they accomplish. “The biggest thing for me is that we raise a lot of money, which is put right back into the community for art education and for scholarships for young local artists,” Ms. Acton said. “I’ve always been interested in art, and I like the fact that this festival is 100-percent run by volunteers. Mrs. Gant said there are numerous areas for volunteers to offer their services both before and during the festival, from the Flamingo 5K run, security and selling beer and water to helping run the children’s workshops, the silent auction and a plethora of other tasks. “Anyone who signs up on our website fills out a form, and we try to match the person to an area where they have an interest or special skill or to where we really need help,” she said. “Believe me, it makes us feel good to do something worthwhile and be successful. We all work for that feeling. And that’s something money can’t buy.”
