Introdución Este libro é o produto principal do proxecto Erasmus + Tourism for teenagers desenvolvido por cinco institutos de Kalamata (Grecia), Poio (España), Pribram (República Checa), Radom (Polonia) e Roma (Italia) durante os cursos 2014-2015 e 2015-2016.

O proxecto tivo como finalidade facer conscientes aos nosos estudantes da súa herdanza histórica e cultural. Buscamos facerlles entender que a diversidade cultural é importante e que as diferentes identidades teñen o mesmo valor e ás veces un trasfondo común ou similar O alumnado do IES de Poio redactou os textos e fixo as fotos desta guía.

This book is the main product of the Erasmus + project Tourism for teenagers organized by five schools from Poio, (Spain), Kalamata (Greece), Pribram (Czech Republic), Radom (Poland) and Rome (Italy) during the academic years 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 The projec has aimed at involving our students, making them aware of the importance of their historical and cultural heritage.

We have wanted them to understand that cultural diversity is important and also that different identities have the same value and sometimes common or similar background.

Texts were written and photos taken by the IES de Poio students.

San Xoán de Poio Na parroquia de San Xoán, a máis grande do municipio, podemos encontrar o principal centro urbano.

O municipio de Poio provén dunha transformación da abadía xurisdicional ligada ao Mosteiro de San Xoán, que se transformou no centro, cuxo primeiro asentamento foi a parroquia de San Xoán de Poio

In the parish of San Xoán, the biggest one in the municipality, we can find the main urban The municipality of Poio arose from the transformation of an abbatial jurisdiction linked to the Monastery of San Xoán, which became a hub whose first settlement was the parish of San Xoán de Poio.

Entre os diferentes espazos que pertencen á parroquia, a vila de Campelo é especialmente típica. O seu pequeno porto, especializado en marisco, está considerado a parte máis interior da Ría de Pontevedra.

Among the different places that belong to the parish, the town of Campelo is specially typical. Its little harbor, specialized in seafood, is considered to be the most interior in the Ría of Pontevedra.

Mosteiro de Poio

Monastry of Poio

It is located in San Xoán de Poio, in front of our highschool.

The Monastery is one of the most important tourist attractions in town.

You just need to see the annual number of visitors to realize that, together with the fishing village of Combarro, it is the best known and most attractive place in Poio.

Está localizado en San Xoán de Poio, en fronte do noso instituto.

O mosteiro é un dos máis importantes iconos de atracción turística da vila.

Tan só hai que ver o número anual de visitantes para darse de conta de que, xunto coa vila pesqueira de Combarro, é o lugar máis coñecido e máis atractivo de Poio.

HISTORIA

HISTORY Crese que o mosteiro foi fundado no século VII por San Fructuoso, aínda que algúns din que realmente o seu fundador foi un dos seus discípulos: Teodosio.

It is believed that the Monastery was founded in the 7th century by Saint Fructuoso, although some say that it was actually founded by one of his disciples, Teodosio.

O primeiro documento histórico conservado que menciona o mosteiro data do ano 942.

A partires deste século, o mosteiro comezou a gañar riqueza e poder.

The first preserved historical document where the monastery is mentioned dates back to the year 942.

From that century on, the monastery began to gain wealth and power.

Durante a primeira metade do século XIX, Poio disfrutou dun grande poder e influencia. En 1835 as expropiacións das propiedades da igrexa realizadas por Mendizábal forzaron a orde de San Benedicto a deixar o lugar.

Until the mid-nineteenth century, Poio enjoyed great power and influence, but in 1835 the expropriations of church properties carried out by the politician Mendizábal forced the order of St. Benedict to leave the place.

Máis de medio século despois, a orde da Piedade instalouse alí e comezou o traballo de restauración do mosteiro.

En 1970 foi designado para formar parte do Patrimonio Artístico Nacional. Dende o século pasado, os mercedarios administran o mantemento da actividade cultural no centro

More than a half a century later, the order of Mercy was installed on the site and began the works of restoration. In 1970 it was declared to be part of the National Artistic Heritage.

Over the last century, the Mercedaries have managed to maintain the center of cultural activity.

ARQUITECTURA

ARQUITECTURE

En canto á arquitectura do mosteiro, pódese dicir que a igrexa é un exemplo de renacemento puro, con algunhas características do barroco. Posúe dous claustros: un chámase "Cruceiro" e o outro "Procesións".

As for the architecture of the Monastery, one can say that the church is an example of pure Renaissance, with some Baroque features.

It has two cloisters: one is called "Cruceiro" and the other one "Procesións".

O primeiro, o Cruceiro, é barroco. As súas paredes están decoradas de forma moi rica, cubertas por un mosaico que representa todo o camiño de Santiago.

The first one, Cruceiro, is Baroque. Its walls are decorated very richly, covered by a mosaic that represents all the way along the Saint James way.

The second cloister is Renaissance.

In the center of the courtyard of the Monastery, there is a Baroque fountain whose water comes from the mountain called Castrove.

O segundo claustro ĂŠ de estilo renacentista.

No centro do patio do Mosteiro hai unha fonte barroca cuxa auga provĂŠn da montaĂąa chamada Castrove.

Como curiosidade, podemos dicir que separado do mosteiro, onde unha vez houbo hortas, agora hai un hórreo, un dos máis grandes de Galicia.

As a curiosity, we can say that, aside from the Monastery, where once there were orchards, now there is a granary, hórreo, one of the largest in Galicia.

Tamén debemos sinalar a existencia dunha calzada romana que une o complexo cunha estrada próxima. Este é un dos exemplos máis claros de restos romanos atopados na cidade de Poio.

We should also note the existence of a Roman road linking the complex with a nearby road.

This is one of the clearest examples of Roman remains found in the town of Poio.

In the Monastery, there is a large library with more than 80,000 copies that represents one of the most impressive in Galicia, making the monastery of Poio a cultural reference in the Rías Baixas area.

No mosterio, hai unha grande biblioteca con máis de 80.000 copias que a fai unha das máis importantes de Galicia, facendo do mosterio de Poio un referente cultural na área das Rías Baixas.

Muiños da Freixa

Watermills of A Freixa

Na canle do río Cancela podemos atopar nove muiños de auga.

As construcións actuais teñen un piso, aproximadamente rectangular, cuxa área é de 6 x 4 m. Constan dun só espazo ou estancia. As paredes están feitas de pedra áspera de 60 ou 70 cm de grosor.

Along the riverbed of the Cancela river, we can find nine watermills.

The current buildings have just one floor, roughly rectangular, whose area is 6x4 m. There is one single open space or room. The walls are made of rough stone masonry, and are 60 or 70 cm thick.

Campelo É unha pequena aldea situada na beira da ría de Poio. Ten unha pequena praia con augas tranquilas, branca e fina area, que está protexida do vento.

Tamén hai unha zona de atraque dos barcos, dende a que podemos ver os barcos pesqueiros que regresan ao porto.

Campelo is a little village situated on the seashore of Poio. It has a little port beach with calm waters, white and fine sand, which is protected from the wind. There is also a berthing zone for the boats, from which we can see the fishing boats that come back to the port.

The little church of A Granxa square and the primary school for the kids that live in the village are some of the main attractions. Besides, Campelo has a market for selling the fish and the seafood that the fishing boats bring in, where fish is often auctioned. The market can be visited in a guided tour with the services of Pescantur Pontevedra.

A peque帽a igrexa da praza da Granxa e o colexio de primaria para os rapaces que viven na aldea son algunas das principais atracci贸ns tur铆sticas. Ademais, Campelo ten unha lonxa para a venda de peixe e marisco que traen os barcos pesqueiros, onde o peixe acostuma ser subastado. A lonxa p贸dese visitar de forma guiada cos servizos de Pescantur Pontevedra.

San Salvador de Poio

Lourido Lourido pertence á parroquia de San Salvador. Ten un paseo marítimo que percorre dúas praias: a praia de Lourido, a cal conta cun campo de fútbol, así coma outro de voleibol, e a praia da Cabeceira, dende a cal se pode ver a Illa de Tambo.

Lourido belongs to the parish of San Salvador. It has a seafront that runs along two beaches: the Lourido beach, which has a football pitch on the sand, as well as a volleyball court, and the Cabeceira beach, from which the Tambo island can be seen.

The seafront consists of two lanes: one for walking and another for cycling.

Besides, Lourido has two parks, one of which is equipped with a zip-line, a football pitch, a basketball court and a bar. Both parks display exercise machines of different types.

O paseo marítimo componse de dous carrís, un para camiñar e outro para andar en bicicleta. Ademáis, Lourido ten dous parques, un dos cales ten unha tirolina, un campo de fútbol, unha pista de baloncesto e un bar.

Ambos parques contan con diferentes tipos de máquinas para facer exercicio.

Portosanto A newly created space, the supposed birthplace of Cristopher Columbus, in which, via screens, models, books and videos, it justifies the theory about the birth of Columbus in Poio.

A Casa de Cristóbal Colón é un espazo de nova creación, o suposto lugar de nacemento de Cristóbal Colón, onde pantallas, maquetas e vídeos amosan a teoría da orixe de Colón en Poio.

Combarro “A costa dos hórreos” podería ser unha boa definición de Combarro. De feito, o mar ten o seu propio espazo nesta zona costeira do municipio de Poio. Entre o río, separado da línea da costa por unha serie de hórreos, e a rúa traseira (San Roque), hai un espazo que simboliza a cultura popular galega.

The Hórreos Coastline could be the current definition of Combarro. In fact, the sea has its own way on this piece of coast in the municipality of Poio.

Between the river, which defines the coast with a line of granaries, hórreos, and the street behind (San Roque), there is an entire space which is a symbol of the popular Galicia culture

Sobre un leito de rocha granítica atópanse as pequenas casas mariñeiras cos seus bloques de pedra delicadamente tallados. Os seus bonitos balcóns solleiros, de estilo barroco, inspíranse na arquitetura dos pazos tradicionais.

On the granite outcrop, the small maritime houses stand with their delicate hewn stonework. They have charming sunny stone balconies, very much in a Baroque style, but inspired by the architecture of the pazos (Galician traditional palaces)

Hórreos de Combarro Os hórreos son construcións que serven como almacéns ou despensas onde as familias gardaban os seus alimentos. Ao principio, estaban feitas de canas trenzadas e palla, pero, máis tarde, comezáronse a construír en pedra ou madeira. Están separadas do chan por uns piares para evitar a humidade e os ratos. O que máis sorprende dos hórreos de Combarro é a súa localización: preto do mar. Moitos veciños posuían terras ao outro lado da ría, polo que transportaban as colleitas por mar e construían os almacéns na beira para descargar direitamente os barcos. Por desgraza, non poucos barcos piratas atracaban na costa coa marea alta para saquear os hórreos dos habitantes.

Hórreos are constructions serving as storehouses or larders where people would keep their family foods. At the beginning, they were made out of braided canes and straw but, later on, they were built in stone or wood. They are raised from the ground by pillars to avoid soil humidity and to keep mice from the crops. What strikes people as shocking about Combarro's hórreos is their location: near the sea.

Many neighbours owned land across the ría so they carried the crops by sea and built the storehouses on the river bank to directly unload the cargo from the ships. Unfortunately, not few pirate ships landed on the shore during high tides in order to loot the villagers’ hórreos .

Cruceiros

Son unha construción moi común en Galicia. Os cruceiros construíanse nos cruces coa esperanza de facelos seguros.

Hai varios elementos nun cruceiro: Base: nela podíanse atopar iscricións sobre a orixe da construción.

Fuste: o piar, que normalmente representaba a imaxe dun santo.

Capitel: a base onde se apoia a cruz. Moitos teñen elementos decorativos.

Cruz: a parte máis importante do cruceiro. Normalmente, acompáñana unha estatua de Cristo ou da Virxe.

They are a very common construction in Galicia. The cruceiros were built in crossroads with the hopes of making them safe.

There are several elements composing a cruceiro: 路 Base: construction and origin inscriptions might be found on the base. 路 Shaft: the pillar, which usually shows the statue of a saint. 路 Capital: base where the cross rests. Many show decorative elements. 路 Cross: the most important part in a cruceiro. It is usually accompanied by a Jesus Christ or a catholic Virgin statue.

Samieira

Samieira è unha pequena aldea da costa de Poio. É coñecida principalmente polas súas praias, unidas por un bonito paseo.

Samieira is a Little village placed on the coast of Poio.

It is mainly known for several beaches which are connected by a beautiful promenade.

A vila ofrece moitos restaurantes e bares onde se poden degustar os produtos típicos da gastronomía galega. É o destino de moitas familias no verán, debido ás suas condicións climáticas e á súa localización excepcional.

The town offers plenty of restaurants and bars where you can taste the Galician gastronomy. This is the destination of numerous families during the summer because of its climate conditions and exceptional location.

Ademais, a “Ruta dos muíños” leva á parte máis alta de Samieira, onde a vista é impresionante e se pode encontrar unha grande variedade de flora e fauna.

Furthermore, there is a route called "Ruta de los molinos" that leads up to the highest part of Samieira where the views are breathtaking and you can also find a wide range of flora and fauna.

Raxó Raxó é unha pequena parroquia entre Poio e Sanxenxo, a só 12 km de Pontevedra. É unha vila que combina a pesca e a gandería co turismo. É bastante moderna, con poucos restos do pasado.

Raxó is a small parish situated between Poio and Sanxenxo, only 12 km away from Pontevedra. It is a village which combines its fishing and farming life with tourism. It is also a modern town with hardly any vestiges of the past

Moitos turistas visítana durante o verán para disfrutar do bo tempo e das preciosas praias, como Xiorto ou Sinás, que contan con tódalas comodidades, ademáis de restaurantes que ofrecen unha grande variedade de pratos típicos, sobre todo peixe e marisco.

Lots of tourists come during the summer to enjoy the fine weather and beautiful beaches such as Xiorto or Sinás which have many facilities and restaurants that offer a wide range of typical dishes where fish and seafood play the leading roles.

No centro da vila, hai unha pequena praia xunto ao porto de pesca e marisqueo.

In the centre of the village, there is a little beach which is located next to its fishing and mussel-gathering port.

Addenda Illa de Tambo Situada na costa de Poio, a illa de Tambo ten praias virxes e augas cristalinas. Está históricamente relacionada co mosteiro de San Xoán de Poio, pero pertence a Combarro dende que esta vila se independizou do mosteiro.

O exército ocupou a Illa pouco despois da Guerra civil e quedou 59 anos gardando a terra. Construíron polvoríns para as municións e trincheiras, cuxas ruínas hoxe pódense visitar, xunto á capela e ás bonitas e tranquilas calas.

Addenda Tambo island Located on Poio's coastline, the Island of Tambo has virgin beaches and crystal-clear waters. It is historically linked to the monastery of San Xoรกn de Poio but, when Combarro became independent from such monastery, Tambo started belonging to Combarro.

The military entered the island soon after the Spanish Civil War and they stayed there, safe-keeping the land, for 59 years. They built munitions dumps and trenches, whose ruins you can actually visit nowadays, as well as a chapel and beautiful and calm coves.

Economía de Poio Sociedade e poboación O municipio de Poio atópase no centro da provincia de Pontevedra, xunto ao río. As súas fronteiras chegan ata Pontevedra ao leste, Meis ao norte, Meaño e Sanxenxo ao oeste e a ría de Pontevedra ao sur.

O municipio ten 33,9 km2, e divídese en cinco parroquias: San Salvador, San Xoán, Combarro, Samieira e Raxó.

En Poio, hai un total de 16.794 habitantes, dos cales 2.715 teñen menos de 15 anos, 11.205 teñen entre 16 e 64 anos e 2.874 teñen máis de 65. Estas cifras débense ao aumento de poboación do municipio nos últimos anos. Este aumento, á súa vez, é probablemente debido á proximidade de Poio coa cidade de Pontevedra.

En canto á relevancia dos sectores económicos, o territorio caracterízase pola perda de importancia do sector primario e a tendencia cara á modernización da economía. Nestas zonas, efectivamente, o sector do turismo é unha importante fonte de ingresos.

A agricultura é unha actividade á baixa, con poucas iniciativas a media xornada. O marisqueo destaca na ría de Pontevedra, mentras a pesca costeira practícase ampliamente nos portos de Campelo, Combarro e Raxó.

Na industria, destacan as conserveiras, xunto co téxtil e as artes gráficas. A construción é importante, xa que aproveitou a intensa actividade inmobiliaria derivada da demanda turística.

Economy of Poio Society and population Poio's municipality is in the center of the province of Pontevedra, next to the river. Its borders arrive to Pontevedra to the East, Meis to the North, Meaño and Sanxenxo to the West, and Pontevedra's estuary to the South.

This municipality has 33.9 km2, and is divided in five parishes: San Salvador, San Xoán, Combarro, Samieira and Raxó.

In Poio, there is a total of 16,794 people, of which 2,715 are 15-years-old minors, 11,205 are 16 to 64 years and there is a total of 2,874 people of more of 65 years. These numbers are due to the increase in population that municipality experienced in the last few years.

This increase in population is probably due to Poio’s proximity to the city of Pontevedra.

As for the relevancy of the economic sectors, the territory is characterized by the loss of importance that the primary sector is suffering and the trend towards modernization that the economy is experiencing. These zones in fact find an excellent source of income in the tourism sector.

The agriculture is an activity in setback, of which only part-time initiatives have been kept. Seafood fishing stands out in the sea inlet of Pontevedra, while coastal fishing is widely practiced in the seaports of Campelo, Combarro and Raxó.

In the industry, the canning industry stands out, along with the textile industry, and that of graphical arts. Construction is important since it has taken advantage of an intense real-state residential activity that is linked to the touristic demand.

Actividades tradicionais MARISQUEO O marisqueo é unha actividade practicada polas mariscadoras e mariscadores que consiste no cultivo, captura e recollida de marisco.

Ao principio, este traballo facíase para mellorar os ingresos familiares. Cando a demanda de marisco comezou a crecer, os habitantes da costa comezaron a aprezar o marisqueo como a oportunidade perfecta para ter un traballo valioso. A pesar da difícil situación actual, as condicións de vida das mariscadoras están mellorando lentamente, aínda que con moito esforzo.

Aos distintos tipos de praias corresponden distintos tipos de marisqueo. Nas áreas rochosas, hai tanto moluscos pegados ás rochas coma crustáceos agochados nos espazos estreitos. Nas zonas areosas, en cambio, atopámolos soterrados no chan.

Traditional activities SHELLFISHING Shell fishing is the activity practised by the shell fishers, which consists in breeding, capturing and collecting shellfish.

At the beginning, this work was done to improve the household income. When the sea fruit demand started growing, the villagers living at the coastlines saw shell fishing as a perfect opportunity to hold a well-valued job. In spite of the current difficult situation, the lady shell fishers' lifestyle is slowly and not effortlessly improving.

The different types of beaches provide with different shell fishing techniques. In rocky areas, there are both molluscs stuck to the rocks and crustaceans hiding in hollow spaces. While in sandy areas, they can be found in dug-out passages.

Gancha Ferramenta usada no marisqueo, que consiste nun angazo que se arrastra pola area, recollendo os moluscos (como berberechos ou ameixas), que se gardan nunha rede metálica. Úsana os mariscadores a pé ou en barco.

Tool used in shell fishing which consists of a rake that is dragged along the sand, picking up molluscs (such as cockles, clams...) that then are stored in a metallic net.

Angazo Ferramenta cun mango longo que termina nunha peza de metal perpendicular formada por dentes de madeira ou de metal en forma de peite. Úsana as mariscadoras a pé.

The angazo is a tool which consists of a long handle ending in a perpendicular metal piece. This piece is formed by wooden or iron teeth that form some kind of comb.

Nasas Redes de pesca ou estruturas formadas por gaiolas metĂĄlicas con forma de cilindro, de maneira que a presa capturada non pode fuxir. As nasas Ăşsanse para pescar centolos e lagostas.

A nasa is a fishing net or a structure formed by cylinder-shaped metal ribs that narrows so that once the prey is caught, it cannot escape. Nasas are used when fishing shellfish such as spider crabs, common lobster and red lobsters 38

Bateas Floating structures used for farming bivalves typical from the Galician Rías. They consist of a wooden structure on the top, with large floats below.

From these platforms there are hanging ropes, where oysters and mussels are farmed (among others) After some time, some boats called bateeiros lift the heavy ropes and remove the molluscs.

Estruturas frotantes usadas para cultivar bivalvos, típicas das rías galegas. Consisten nunha estrutura de madeira que se apoia nuns frotadores. Da plataforma colgan longas cordas, onde medran ostras e mexillóns, entre outros.

Despois dun tempo, uns barcos chamados “bateeiros” levantan as pesadas cordas e recollen os moluscos.

Dornas Son as barcas de pesca tradicionais das Rías Baixas.

Normalmente son pequenas e teñen remos.

They are the traditional fishing boats in Rías Baixas.

They are usually small-sized and fitted for propulsion by means of oars.

Nowadays, some dornas have had their sails replaced by an outboard.

Actualmente, algunhas teñen un motor foraborda no canto de velas.
