Inductees into the Hall of Fame are selected by a sevenmember committee who meticulously search for the most outstanding leaders of our industry, based on four foundations: Enduring Excellence, Superior Accomplishments, Innovation and Creativity, and Philanthropic Generosity. The committee members spend hours researching and vetting the nominations before voting independently on a pointsbased system via a secure web-based ballot. The committee members are heads of companies and organizations, representing various aspects of our industry. The results are received by our accounting firm, Carr, Riggs & Ingram PLLC.
• ENDURING EXCELLENCE in their personal and business affairs, who is considered an inspiration, role model and mentor to others.
• SUPERIOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS as an enduring and visionary leader in their field, and their organizations exemplify the highest standards for their customers and for their employees.
• INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY whose ideas have greatly influenced and impacted the industry and produced changes in design retailing, merchandising, marketing, manufacturing, importing, supply chain or support services to the industry.
• PHILANTHROPIC GENEROSITY of their time, talents and resources to others, whether that may be in the industry, professional associations, service enterprises, civic endeavors, charitable and religious organizations, or educational institutions.
Presented to each member inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, the Affie flame symbolizes the enduring spirit of our industry. Uniquely, we are an eternal industry because people will always have homes and always need furnishings to turn a house into a home.
The coveted Affie features a flame plated with 18kt Gold, circled by a metal infinity band crafted of stainless steel and seated on a black marble base.

JEFFREY S. CHILD, president of the Salt Lake City-based RC Willey Home Furnishings, has led growth fivefold during his 24-year tenure at the helm of the Berkshire Hathawayowned retailer. Known for sharing strategies for success — not just within his company but also with other retailers — stores carry everything needed for the home: furnishings, mattresses, electronics, appliances, flooring, and fitness equipment. Its 10 stores are located in four western states, serviced by a network of three distribution centers.
Mr. Child began his 45-year-long career in the family business waxing warehouse floors and working his way up as a sales associate, buyer and merchandise manager where he gained a great love for furnishings. Under leadership with his brother, Sheldon, and brother-in-law, Scott Hymas, the company has adopted new technologies to create a fully integrated supply chain throughout its sales, credit, operations and logistics processes, to enhance its competitive edge by providing exceptional flexibility, efficiency and innovation. Operational decisions are based on what is good for the customer. Store visits are designed to be an unexpected experience, whether through entertaining displays, engaging events or exemplary service. During the Covid-19 pandemic, RC Willey devised creative new ways to serve its customers safely, while also protecting jobs and the health of its employees. Mr. Child holds a deep commitment to honesty and professionalism in taking care of each customer as well as his associates and vendors.
An active supporter of industry organizations, Mr. Child has served as president of the Home Furnishings Association, the Furniture Marketing Group and the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, particularly focused on its leadership initiatives. He is a longtime leader of his church and has served on many community boards, including the Legal Aid Society to provide representation for those unable to do so. An active supporter of hundreds of local and national charities, RC Willey also donates merchandise to furnish homes for the homeless.

Our main purpose is to take care of our customer. And so if that means we have to build a store, then we will. If that means we have to change what we have in the store product wise, we will. If that means we have to change how we do our deliveries or how our systems get set up, we always keep in mind what we do we’re doing it for our customer. That’s how we grow.

WILLIAM A. “BILL” HINKS
Furniture Mart USA

When we are going to open a new store, we check it over eight ways to Sunday so we’re going to be sure we’re making the right move, we’re in the right place. All of us, work together because we are a team.
WILLIAM A. HINKS, founder and chairman of Furniture Mart USA, started selling used furniture as a sideline in 1977. Recognizing an opportunity to provide consumers in rural markets with access to a wide range of quality furniture and flooring brands typically only found in metropolitan stores, Mr. Hinks grew Furniture Mart USA into a Top 40 retailer with 60 stores and six warehouses in six upper Midwestern states. With a mission to transform “houses into homes, employees into family and customers into friends,” the three-generation family business based in Sioux Falls, S.D., quickly established a strong base across the many rural markets it serves by always putting the customer first.
The steady growth of Furniture Mart USA is a testament to savvy retail strategies and the innovative mindset of Mr. Hinks. The company operates four distinct furniture store brands, each targeted to a different demographic group and budget range with its own format. The retailer’s Priority Sales program partners with nine Native American reservations to provide private funding to tribal members, enabling many to buy furniture for the first time. At the upper end, the new Billie Arthur store brand provides interior design consultation as a destination for discerning homeowners who demand exceptional craftsmanship backed by unparalleled service. The company offers in-stock rapid delivery by leveraging its strategically located warehouses to deliver most furniture orders within three days across the 300,000 sq. mile region it serves.
A serial entrepreneur, Mr. Hinks is a longtime property developer who owns most of the company’s store and warehouse properties. This approach helps reduce costs and gives new life to many small-town storefronts that otherwise might be vacant.
Mr. Hinks and his company partner with the communities in which it does business by supporting higher education and endless nonprofit organizations. He has long supported the Home Furnishings Association and been a generous supporter of the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame.
STANLEY F. PAULEY, became president of Richmond-based Carpenter Co. seven years after E. R. Carpenter Co. was founded in 1950 as a latex foam distributor. Over the next 60-plus years, he built Carpenter into the world’s largest vertically integrated manufacturer of polyurethane foams for upholstery, bedding, carpet cushioning, furniture and fabrication, and other consumer products.
An electrical engineer by education, Mr. Pauley possessed an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. He was known for his attention to every detail of the manufacturing process and business, always doing things the right way and keeping an eye on reducing waste and practicing environmental circularity. Today, the company employs some 7,000 people at more than 70 production facilities around the world.
Mr. Pauley’s passion for manufacturing excellence and advancing the science of comfort in the home generated the development of countless innovative foam solutions for customers. In the 1960s, Carpenter led the way in facilitating the transition from materials such as shredded cotton, foam rubber and wool batting to polyurethane foam cushions that provided a more uniform shape, firmness and durability. This change revolutionized the furniture, mattress and automotive seating industries, leading to higher customer satisfaction and more efficient and accurate production.
Mr. Pauley also was instrumental in Carpenter’s evolution from making individual furniture cushions with molds to pouring form continuously, which is now the industry standard. He also led Carpenter to expand its product and geographic footprints into new markets, including Canada and Europe, and directed the construction of its own own polyol production facility near Houston, in 1973, for better access to raw materials, as well as its own truck fleet, to speed deliveries.
An active member of the International Sleep Products Assn and the American Home Furnishings Alliance, Mr. Pauley made time to serve on many nonprofit boards of directors and was a generous philanthropist to higher education, medicine and the fine arts wherever Carpenter had facilities.

STANLEY F. “STAN” PAULEY Carpenter Co. 1927–2020
Whenever
we
faced
a challenge, Stan always looked at as an opportunity. What could Carpenter do that would differentiate us from our competitors? How can we continue to serve our customers? It may have been a natural disaster or it may have been a plant that wasn’t performing well… He didn’t sit around and wait for the problem to come to him. He attacked it.

NORMAN WAXMAN
Norman Waxman Consulting
What guides my life is my integrity, my honesty, my care or people who need help….with that I would advise emerging leaders to tell the truth, be honest and true to themselves, and believe in what they’re doing.
NORMAN WAXMAN, CEO of Norman Waxman Consulting, has been an adviser and mentor to dozens of manufacturers and retailers who have sought his good counsel as an insightful coach. During his long career, he has identified and forged new channels of distribution abroad and domestically, introduced new concepts of product merchandising, reinvented sales and marketing operations, and mentored generations of leaders. A socially responsible philanthropist, Mr. Waxman is known for representing the highest ethical standards and is passionate about sharing his love for the industry, building trust and the right ways to do business.
The first sales trainee hired by the Schnadig Corp., Mr. Waxman rose to become executive vice president and a member of the board of directors before moving on to executive management positions for Rowe Furniture, Quaker Fabrics and Corson Furniture. An astute business strategist and team builder, Mr. Waxman was an early adopter of merchandising the whole room through correlated upholstery, fabric and table groups. One key to his success was his ability to forge close partnerships with retail customers, whose input he leveraged to develop furnishings for changing consumer lifestyles during the transition from predominantly traditional to contemporary and transitional design preferences.
Mr. Waxman was a merchant, marketer and operator. As one of the first to recognize the potential of export sales for U.S. upholstered products, he was a leader in opening new channels of international distribution and logistics through the establishment of “American Show Place” galleries and other innovative retail programs in Europe and South Africa. In addition, he was a catalyst in streamlining operations to optimize return on investment with all the brands he worked with, enhancing teamwork and accountability.
Recognized as a leading industry ambassador, both nationally and internationally, Mr. Waxman is involved in numerous civic and philanthropic activities, including the City of Hope, Anti-Defamation League and the Sondra and Norman Waxman Endowment Fund for Social Justice.

Welcome to the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, home to a $150 billion industry. Here you will discover a creative culture, full of imagination that is matched with a passion for functional living. It is our privilege to improve lives by furnishing homes around the world. It is our hope that the Hall of Fame will inspire the industry and everyone who visits to live life more fully surrounded by beauty in the place that each of us calls home.
The Hall of Fame Gallery focuses on the spirit of our leaders and their contributions to the American home furnishings industry. The beautiful Wall of Fame features 141 inducted Members of the Hall of Fame, with touchscreen kiosks offering a deeper dive into their lives. The Tribute Wall presents key innovations and developments in the industry.

Each February, The Hall of Fame Leadership Institute at High Point University challenges emerging leaders with intensive executive education fashioned after the Chief Executive Organization’s Harvard Program.

The Leadership Initiative focuses on inspiring a new class of leaders and innovation. Each April we honor five emerging leaders as a Paul Broyhill Future Leader and facilitate interaction with inducted members of the Hall of Fame.

Through the Tell Us Your Story Video Booth, the Hall of Fame tells the inside stories of what it’s like to work in our industry. It’s greater purpose? Attracting talent to our industry and asking visitors to tell us about their homes.
Hall of Fame activities bring together leaders of the industry through a variety of events in order to prompt discussion and exploration. Events include seminars, speakers, awards events, dinners and cocktail parties.
The Hall of Fame serves as a safe haven for our artifacts, patents, oral interviews, drawings, photographs, founder biographies, company histories, manufacturing techniques, and much more.

There is no written history of the home furnishings industry in the United States. Now, under the direction of our staff curator and historian, we are expanding our research and work to preserve our history. Through video interviews and photographs, we document the inside stories of the hands that have created and crafted the products.

Told in the words of our leaders, our Oral Histories are published works that forever capture the industry’s history and growth. We have conducted more than 60 oral histories, posted on our website, available for research, and soon to become a part of the Listening Library.
