Dear Guest:

The story of the industry’s new home is a remarkable journey and a testament to the entrepreneurial leadership of our Board of Directors and the collaboration of the creative team. Our home is about to become a reality and we must stop to take a moment to celebrate this achievement for our industry.

In 4 short years – including 2 years consumed by COVID – we have purchased property, designed a building, conceived museum exhibits, and are about to birth a living, breathing place to gather, to honor and to learn. At the next High Point Market, Phase 1 is on schedule to open as a world-class space that is far beyond what any of us imagined.

Six short months from tonight, we will welcome YOU to our new home – a hub of ongoing activities – events, speakers, seminars, board meetings, and more. Designed to inspire us, it will further unify the industry that has given us so much: a livelihood, a purposeful career, and lifelong friends. You will be so proud.

Between markets, we turn to inspiring consumers to become more passionate about their homes and to attract talent to a little understood industry full of opportunities. What’s not to love? We are relational, global, creative, hungry for design, full of opportunities in technology and logistics, and we serve a noble purpose: We improve lives by creating beautiful homes.

We could not have done this without tremendous industry support from you sitting in this ballroom. We also must thank our architects, Freeman Kennett PLLC; our design firm, ROTO; our general contractor New Atlantic Contracting Inc.; our Creative Team, David Gebhart, Karen McNeill, Kyle Hughes, Lauren Estep, and myself; the Building Committee, Larry Rogers, Mark Phillips, and Mike Herschel; Executive Committee Scott Eckman and Steve Rusing, and our Board of Directors. Together, we are bringing this project in on time, albeit a little bruised by unending price increases.

Tonight we award the industry’s highest honor to five new members of the Hall of Fame: Michael Amini, chairman and CEO of AICO/Amini Innovations Corp.; Michael K. Dugan, former president and CEO of Henredon Furniture Industries; John Gabbert, founder of Room & Board; Neil Goldberg, chairman and CEO of Raymour & Flanigan Furniture; and Stephen K. Pond, founding publisher of Furniture Today. Join me in celebrating our leaders, our emerging leaders and each person here who makes our industry $150 billion strong. We are at the center of home life. And now, we will have a home worthy of our great industry.

®

Just 6 months from now, the industry will have a home of its own – our place to gather, to honor and to learn. Here we will inspire the next generations of innovative leadership in a living/breathing space that will become the industry’s hub of ongoing activities – events, speakers, seminars, board meetings, or the place to meet friends for a drink or cup of coffee.

OUR NEW HOME

Think of it. Each sport has its own Hall of Fame. Music has more than one Hall of Fame. Dozens of industries –smaller than ours – have a Hall of Fame. Yet, even though we furnish millions of homes around the globe, until now, our $150 billion industry has not had a place to tell our stories, to inspire the next emerging leaders and to function as the hub of ongoing activities.

We are a $150 billion industry that shapes lives. We are at the center of home life. We serve a noble purpose: WE IMPROVE LIVES BY CREATING BEAUTIFUL HOMES.

A PLACE TO HONOR: The great entrepreneurs and leaders who built our industry deserve a permanent memorialization. The Hall of Fame will celebrate and recognize inducted members through interactive and engaging exhibits and videos. Here, emerging leaders will meet industry giants to benefit from their wisdom as they walk through their life experiences.

A PLACE TO LEARN: Rich in technology, explore interactive displays that tell the inside stories of our industry. As a discovery zone of the jobs and talent behind the scenes, learn how various roles fit into the total picture of the world of home furnishings. Through amazing exhibits, gain a greater appreciation for the scope, size, and complexity of our industry.

OPENING
INDUSTRY’S NEW HOME

A PLACE TO GATHER: The Hall of Fame will be a world-class gathering place and a Center for Leadership in the heart of the High Point Market. Here, is where leaders will meet to generate new ideas and friendships, and to inspire the next generations of leaders. It will be a spectacular home for the industry and a symbol of our global innovation, excellence, and leadership.

SELECTION PROCESS

Inductees into the Hall of Fame are selected by a sevenmember committee who meticulously search for the most outstanding leaders of our industry, based on four foundations: Enduring Excellence, Superior Accomplishments, Innovation and Creativity, and Philanthropic Generosity. The committee members spend hours researching and vetting the nominations before voting independently on a points-based system via a secure web-based ballot. The committee members are heads of companies and organizations, representing various aspects of our industry. The results are received by our accounting firm, Carr, Riggs & Ingram PLLC.

THE PROFILE OF AN INDUCTEE OF THE HALL OF FAME:

• ENDURING EXCELLENCE in their personal and business affairs, who is considered an inspiration, role model and mentor to others.

• SUPERIOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS as an enduring and visionary leader in their field, and their organizations exemplify the highest standards for their customers and for their employees.

• INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY whose ideas have greatly influenced and impacted the industry and produced changes in design retailing, merchandising, marketing, manufacturing, importing, supply chain or support services to the industry.

• PHILANTHROPIC GENEROSITY of their time, talents and resources to others, whether that may be in the industry, professional associations, service enterprises, civic endeavors, charitable and religious organizations, or educational institutions.

THE AFFIE

Presented to each member inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, the Affie flame symbolizes the enduring spirit of our industry. Uniquely, we are an eternal industry because people will always have homes and always need furnishings to turn a house into a home.

The coveted Affie features a flame plated with 18kt Gold, circled by a metal infinity band crafter of stainless steel and seated on a black marble base. Designed by Mark Tucker, III, a furniture designer and graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design, its beautiful design symbolizes the eternal nature of home design and the impact of the contributions to the industry made by each inductee of the Hall of Fame.

A master showman, Michael Amini, CEO and Founder of AICO/Amini Innovation Corp., has established a reputation as the ever innovative, flamboyant and creative champion of the industry. The company was founded in 1988 as an occasional table importer and has grown to include case goods, upholstery, home accents and lighting. The Michael Amini® brand also includes licenses for wall décor, rugs, and textiles.

Mr. Amini takes a very personal approach to his designs, adding luxury touches which surprise and delight consumers. He routinely works with factory craftsmen to teach them new finishing techniques and to ensure quality production down to the finest detail. Inspired by his endless world travels and fashion trends, his styles range from contemporary, traditional, and glam to transitional, rustic and casual. A natural promoter, his brand has explored all avenues of marketing and advertising.

The AICO showrooms in High Point and Las Vegas feature extravagant visual and audio experiences in the lobbies, which are meticulously and strategically designed to create an inspiring introduction to the brand before viewing the Michael Amini designs. The World Market Center showroom opened with lines of people waiting to experience the AICO interactive light show tunnel. The High Point Market showroom features a dramatic interpretation of the Trevi Fountain in Rome. It is not unusual for his showrooms to feature the latest in tech light shows and live entertainment. Mr. Amini has served as chairman of the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation Board of Directors. Other honors include the City of Hope Lifetime Achievement and Spirit of Life awards; the Anti-Defamation League American Heritage Award; the International Home Furnishings Representative Association Pillar of the Industry Award; and the ARTS Academy of Achievement Award. He received an honorary Doctorate Degree from the Irell and Manella Graduate School of Biological Science at City of Hope.

Michael Amini AICO/Amini Innovation Corp.

The entrance is selling your company and your brand. If you do not sell your brand, I don’t think you can do a good job of selling your furniture. We try to make sure that it is remembered as a totally different showroom in the market. For that reason, we try to give them an experience that they have never seen anywhere else.

39 2022 INDUCTEE

As president of Henredon Furniture Industries and cofounder of Jamestown Sterling, Michael K. Dugan held a place at the table for many of the industry’s biggest changes during his 35 years in the furniture industry. Chief among them was the industry’s shift from domestic manufacturing to import sourcing, a disruptive period that he wrote about in “The Furniture Wars: How America Lost a $50 Billion Dollar Industry.” The book quickly became a must-read among industry leaders seeking to understand the unique challenges of the furniture industry — and what the future might hold.

Michael

K. Dugan Henredon Furniture Industries

Furniture products are made from non-proprietary materials. The forms and the functions are non-exclusive and not protected by patents. Brand recognition is low. Dealer loyalty is limited. Consumer tastes are fickle. Yet, mysteriously, some products sell. This is the “X-Factor” of design – the “look,” as the furniture mavens call it – which drives the business. Of course, good marketing programs can surround a good product and enhance its appeal, but product is the Once and Future King.

Mr. Dugan served as president of Henredon for 17 years. He believed in marketing directly to the consumer through impressive marketing campaigns in prestigious consumer shelter magazines, thereby building consumer loyalty and a strong brand. A series of creative collaborations with highly visible designers and fashion brands solidified Henredon’s position as a style leader. Under his watch, Henredon built thriving licensing relationships with Barbara Barry and Ralph Lauren. The steady stream of other winning collections included Aston Court, Enchantment, Amalfi Coast, Vicente Wolf, Pierre Deux, Charles X, and Acquisitions. By pursuing the interior design business as a lucrative market, Henredon helped open up the High Point Market to interior designers looking for access to high-end brands.

In the early 1980s, Mr. Dugan played an instrumental role in the merger of the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers with the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association, which helped to unify furniture manufacturers from across the country. He also was involved with the Furniture Foundation and the University of South Carolina School of Retailing. As the Alex Lee Professor of Business at Lenoir Rhyne University, where he received an honorary Doctorate, he continued as a voice for the industry through courses for business students and symposiums for the industry and community.

John Gabbert left his family’s traditional furniture store in 1980 at age 33 to create Room & Board, a new retail business focused on modern, timeless designs made by U.S. craftsmen at an affordable value. Four decades later, Room & Board has grown to include 21 stores across the country as well as operating an omni-channel sales operation that accounts for 60 percent of sales. Mr. Gabbert’s vision for his company was personal: he wanted to create a culture of like-minded people where everyone – customers and staff – is treated as a friend. There are no sales or promotions, and the Room & Board sales team is salaried, so that the focus stays on what’s best for the customer and not on earning a commission.

A creative merchant and strategic thinker, Mr. Gabbert believes good design starts with function, and form follows. Since its beginnings, Room & Board has specialized in clean, simple furniture built with honest, long-lasting materials. To fulfill this mission, he created an in-house product development team because he believes that the sales team is closest to the customer and better able to identify unmet needs. Room & Board offers a great deal of choice and personalization to customers through a “by-the-inch” program. It also offers flexibility in the finishing and mixing of materials – for example, offering multiple choices of stone, glass and solid wood on tabletops with various finishes for the iron bases.

Based in Minneapolis, the brand is known for its commitment to environmental stewardship. More than 90 percent of products sold are manufactured by small U.S. companies who practice responsible sourcing. A co-founder of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, Room & Board is dedicated to improving people’s lives at both the local and global levels and has long advocated for sustainability of the planet.

John Gabbert Room & Board

The reason for our success is simply people. It’s first, hiring the right people. Then it’s giving them the freedom and information to do the right things. We basically don’t have ‘rules.’ So, we, for example, have an open book in terms of financials. Any employee can see all the financial statements at any time.  We say to people, you know what the right thing is.  Do the right thing, which is, of course, a balance between what’s right for the customer and what’s right for the company.

Neil Goldberg Raymour & Flanigan Furniture

Neil Goldberg is Chairman of Raymour & Flanigan the largest furniture and mattress retailer in the Northeast and among the Top 10 nationwide. Under his leadership since 1982, the family business has grown through organic expansion and acquisitions, from three stores to 145 locations in seven states. Recognizing the explosion of off-price retail, the company launched the Raymour & Flanigan Outlet stores to attract new customers to the brand by offering value-oriented products. The organization also includes a real estate portfolio of stores, shopping centers, warehouses and office buildings – all the while continuing to operate like a small company.

Mr. Goldberg, with family members spanning three generations, has created a loyal culture of teamwork, with a relentless focus on leveraging operational excellence to enhance the customer shopping experience. Driven by the mission statement, “Treat our people well and they will treat our customers well,” the Top 10 retailer has achieved the designation as A Great Place to Work® company.

In 2008, I remember writing in an email, ‘we have decided not to participate in the recession.’ Many people read it and thought it was a joke. But, so much of leadership is about setting the expectations and the culture, having people understand the goals and the responsibilities to reach those expectations. So we wanted to make clear to everybody, that whatever was going on around us was just noise. We were going to ignore the recession and continue to grow the business as we thought appropriate.

Raymour & Flanigan launched an in-house Leadership Development Institute in 2007 as an ongoing vehicle for idea generation, training, and developing leaders from within the company in order to support its expanding, multi-state operations. Based on the philosophy that the real boss is the customer, its 6,500 employees are empowered with the responsibility to “own the shopping experience” as the customer’s contact with the company. Taking a disciplined approach to inventory management, logistics and operations, Raymour & Flanigan delivers 98 percent of its merchandise in three days or less, seven days a week.

Mr. Goldberg has been active with the Home Furnishings Association, American Home Furnishings Alliance and American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation Board of Directors. Honors include the City of Hope Spirit of Life award, the Anti-Defamation League American Heritage Award and the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Stephen K. Pond founded Furniture Today in 1976 with the vision to create “the industry’s newspaper” to comprehensively inform stakeholders throughout the home furnishings industry. During his ownership, the parent company, Communications Today, also launched Home Textiles Today, Home Accents Today, Design Today, Upholstery Today, the Professional Upholsterer, Video Today and Manufacturing Today. His commitment to founding world-class publications – of the same standard as The Wall Street Journal – was centered on the strategy that decision makers need proprietary industry news and information as tools to build their businesses globally, and, that this industry deserves a great newspaper.

Mr. Pond and his team set the highest standards for business and journalistic integrity: objectivity and accuracy backed by in-depth, knowledgeable reporting on all product categories. Furniture Today boldly entered the world of the electronic newsroom in order to improve the quality and speed of news coverage. Daily newspapers were published during markets; professionally conducted research and special sections included the Top 100 Retailers and Top Manufacturers reports, Profiles in Leadership, the Best-Selling Dining Room and Bedroom reports; and each market featured extensive coverage of new product introductions.

His publications also provided companies willing to invest in communicating their story and strategies with effective new advertising vehicles for brand building. An in-house Marketing Services Department – staffed by skilled writers, graphic artists and idea generators –helped advertisers develop sophisticated business and marketing strategies that would enhance their positions in the marketplace.

Skilled at connecting people and building diverse teams, Mr. Pond has launched executive education programs for the Chief Executives Organization and the Young Presidents Organization at leading universities around the world, including Harvard, Oxford, Peking, and Stanford. Recently, he has been instrumental in the creation of the Paul Broyhill Future Leaders Award program and the Hall of Fame Home Furnishings Leadership Institute at High Point University.

One of the foundation rocks that was attractive to other people who came to work on the paper was the integrity that we had, both on the editorial side as well as on the business side. In order for the journalists to feel that their work was going to be appreciated, they wanted to know that there would not be any interference from the advertisers in the quality and content of what they wrote about. By the same token, people on the business side, wanted to know that when they quoted somebody a price, they’re not going to be undercut by their boss or by another competitive salesperson. There has to be openness, honesty, and integrity.

HALL OF FAME HOME FURNISHINGS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE AT HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19 — THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2023 | HIGH POINT, NORTH CAROLINA

Each year, 25 emerging leaders are selected from a nominated pool of candidates for a challenging seminar of peer learning based on the practice of successful home furnishings leadership. Fashioned after the prestigious Harvard Business School Seminar for the Young President’s Organization and Chief Executives Organization – attended by many leaders in the industry – the Institute is founded on the power and impact of peer learning gained through focused tutorial seminars, hosted by the Earl N. Phillips School of Business at High Point University.

The Institute is for serious emerging leaders across the industry who aspire to C-suite positions and who want to be exposed to new ways of thinking and problem solving. The Institute builds on the legacy of our inducted members of the Hall of Fame by connecting them in classes with the industry’s finest emerging leaders.

Participants who attend three institutes are honored as a Home Furnishings Leadership Institute Fellow and will be awarded a graduation certificate and digital badge.

Classes and discussion groups will utilize the new state of the art Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center on the HPU campus. Room and board at the adjoining Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel are included with tuition.

For information, visit www.homefurnishingshalloffame.com/leadershipinstitute

TUITION: $6,000, which includes room, board, and materials. Attendance is required for the opening session through the closing session – no exceptions.

LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE 50
Visi • C municati • Executi • Cul re

The Leadership Institute was a great opportunity to make connections with peers and learn key concepts that we need to carry back to organizations. It was great. — Bennett

The most important thing that we can take from this is real world information to take back to our companies and implement so we can grow with the industry. — Jared

I’m so honored to be a part of the inaugural class of the Home Furnishings Leadership Institute. The inspiring strategies and tangible best practices left me energized to take back to my company. — Jill

After this experience, I found my group. This has absolutely opened my mind as far as transitioning to a more visionary mindset for my company. — Erin

I got to meet some incredible people in the industry. I definitely made some lifelong connections. — Ryan

The challenge question posed each night by the keynote speakers not only caused me to think introspectively, but it was great to hear what other members of the class thought, their reactions, and how they differed from mine. — Alice

INITIATIVES

The Hall of Fame is the only organization in the industry that embraces the whole industry, no matter what your segment or role. Our permanent home will enable us to expand these 10 initiatives.

1. HONORING OUR LEADERS

Within our new home will be both a Wall of Fame and a digital Tribute Wall to celebrate the contributions of the Hall of Fame inductees. To honor their leadership, we will be able to tell their stories and achievements through interactive touchscreen kiosks, videos, photographs, and oral histories.

2. LEADERS CIRCLE

The Leaders Circle will present peer-to-peer activities for the most prestigious gathering of leaders in our industry, composed of Inducted Members of the Hall of Fame, Donors, participants in the Hall of Fame Leadership Institute at High Point University and the Paul Broyhill Future Leaders.

3. THE HISTORY PROJECT

There is no written history of the home furnishings industry in the United States. Now, under the direction of our staff curator and historian, we are expanding our research and work to preserve our history. Through video interviews and photographs, we document the inside stories of the hands that have created and crafted the products.

4. ORAL HISTORY & BOOK PUBLISHING

Told in the words of our leaders, our Oral Histories are published works that forever capture the industry’s history and growth. We have conducted more than 60 oral histories, posted on our website, available for research, and soon to become a part of the Listening Library.

5. THE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

The Hall of Fame Leadership Institute at High Point University challenges emerging leaders with intensive executive education fashioned after the Chief Executive Organization’s Harvard Program. In addition, we present a world-class speaker at the annual Induction Celebration in October.

6. PAUL BROYHILL FUTURE LEADERS

The Leadership Initiative focuses on inspiring a new class of leaders and innovation. Each year we honor five emerging leaders as a Paul Broyhill Future Leader and facilitate interaction with inducted members of the Hall of Fame.

7. A TREASURY OF MEMORABILIA

The Hall of Fame serves as a safe haven for our artifacts, patents, oral interviews, drawing, photographs, founder biographies, company histories, manufacturing techniques, and much more.

9. TELL US YOUR STORY PROJECT

8. WALK OF FAME

Established in 2001, the Walk of Fame recognizes the innovation, creativity, and excellence of the Hall of Fame inductees.

Hitchhiking to market. Starting out on the factory floor. Everyone loves a good industry story. The Tell Us Your Story project captures the touching, humorous, and even quirky tales that make our industry so special.

10. TELLING OUR STORY TO THE WORLD

A highlight of the Hall of Fame will be a collection of world-class films, some as immersive experiences, sharing the stories of our industry from various perspectives and documenting the history of our $150 billion industry.
