October 14, 2018 To our Guests, Tonight marks the 30th consecutive year that the Hall of Fame has recognized exceptional leaders by awarding the industry’s highest honor: induction into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame. As the industry’s most prestigious gathering, this year’s Induction celebration honors Kurt L. Darrow of La-Z-Boy Incorporated, Allen E. Gant, Jr. of Glen Raven Inc., Keith Koenig of City Furniture, and Paul B. Toms, Jr. of Hooker Furniture Corp.

As you read their bios and words of wisdom, listen to their speeches, and watch what drives them in the videos, we hope you are inspired to lead your own team with even greater vision.

Certainly legendary Duke University Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski, our Leadership keynote speaker and the NCAA’s all-time winning leader in men’s basketball and the first Division I men’s basketball coach to reach 1,000 career victories, has much to share about leadership. What you might not know is that Coach K is no stranger to the business world and has partnered with Apple to launch a digital leadership platform, PowerForward. Tonight, we’ll all learn why he is a frequent speaker for Fortune 500 companies and a best-selling author.

As the only organization which embraces the whole industry, our mission is to create a new class of innovation and leadership for all segments: manufacturing, furniture designers, retail, interior designers, sales representatives, fabrics, suppliers and partners, and building management. To help the industry both retain and attract fresh new thinking, we launched our first Future Leaders dinners, connecting 10 inducted members of the Hall of Fame with 10 future leaders. We’re working on introducing additional executive education for promising leaders under 40 and we’re responding to the expressed desire of emerging leaders for a web of connectivity that normally is reserved for top management. And, there’s more in the pipeline that focuses on long-range, strategic thinking with programming that is relevant to the industry.

Lead with Vision is a call to action for the industry to think outside of the box with new passion, new innovation and new strategies. All of this, comes on top of our other initiatives to preserve and tell our story, and to start planning for our permanent home.

SELECTION PROCESS Inductees the Hall of Fame are selected by a seven-member committee who meticulously search for the most outstanding leaders of our industry, based on four foundations: Enduring Excellence, Superior Accomplishments, Innovation and Creativity, and Philanthropic Generosity.

The committee members spend hours researching and vetting the nominations before voting independently on a points-based system via a secure web-based ballot. The committee members are heads of companies and organizations, representing various aspects of our industry. The results are received by our accounting firm, Sharrard, McGee & Co., PA. The Profile of an Inductee of the Hall of Fame: •E NDURING EXCELLENCE in their personal and business affairs, who is considered an inspiration, role model and mentor to others.

The coveted Affie features a flame plated with 18 kt. Gold, circled by a metal infinity band crafted of stainless steel and seated on a black marble base. Designed by Mark Tucker, III, a furniture designer and a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design, its beautiful design symbolizes the eternal nature of home design and the impact of the contributions to the industry made by each member of the Hall of Fame.

KURT L. DARROW La-Z-Boy Incorporated Kurt L. Darrow, chairman, president and CEO of La-Z-Boy Incorporated, repositioned and strengthened La-Z-Boy as one of the world’s most recognized consumer furniture brands.

Today, the public company is the leading global producer of reclining chairs and the second largest manufacturer and distributor of residential furniture in the United States.

During his tenure, the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries® store system evolved to become the 13th largest furniture retailer in the U.S., with La-Z-Boy branded products sold in 60 countries. The La-Z-Boy family of brands also includes England Furniture, American Drew, Hammary, Kincaid Furniture and Joybird.

Mr. Darrow spent nearly his entire career with La-Z-Boy, beginning in sales and marketing.

He expanded the company’s product offering beyond the iconic recliner into a full range of furniture for every room of the home. During a time when the industry was rapidly changing, Mr. Darrow focused the company’s portfolio on keeping only those brands with a strategic long-term fit. By leading a team to transform the company’s global supply chain to include procurement and production, he turned the company’s domestic manufacturing platform into an asset when many U.S. producers were moving offshore, championing the brand’s "Made in America" status. He carved out a distinct position in the marketplace by offering the customer mass customization of stylish quality furniture with a speed-to-market advantage.

Mr. Darrow’s Board leadership includes the American Home Furnishings Alliance, American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation, Anti-Defamation League Furniture Division, CMS Energy Corp., Business Leaders of Michigan, ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, and Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. He has received the AntiDefamation League American Heritage Award, the American Home Furnishings Alliance Distinguished Service Award and the City of Hope Spirit of Life Award. He holds an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Adrian College.

ALLEN E. GANT, JR. GLEN RAVEN, INC. Allen E. Gant Jr., chairman and recently retired CEO of Glen Raven, Inc., championed the application of performance fabrics for outdoor and indoor furnishings, the marine and shade markets, the automotive industry and other industrial uses. Mr. Gant is known for fueling perpetual transformation, driven by a corporate motto of “Let endless possibilities begin.” With more than 3,000 employees at 40 locations in 17 countries and six continents, the family-owned business was founded in 1880 in Alamance County, N.C. Today, the company remains true to its core values of creating products based on design and performance for each of its 43 brands, including Sunbrella®. The debt-free company generates zero land waste in the U.S. and soon will do so at its facilities in Europe and China.

In 1971, Mr. Gant joined the business founded by his grandfather in the industrial engineering department, becoming president and CEO in 1996. During his tenure, Mr. Gant tackled pressure from overseas competition that threatened many U.S. manufacturers by transforming a company that was once focused primarily on apparel into one creating innovative fabrics for multiple industries. He guided two major restructures and several acquisitions and mergers, including the acquisition of Sunbury Textile Mills in 2017.

Mr. Gant, who created the standard for performance fabrics in home furnishings, also pushed for more effective marketing of the growing Glen Raven brands.

His voluntary board service includes President George W. Bush’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition and TextilePAC, and the National Council of Textile Organizations. Passionate about supporting public education, economic development and leadership initiatives, his honors include the UNC Kenan-Flagler Global Leadership Award, the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award, and Commitment to Leadership Excellence. Textile World Magazine named Glen Raven the most innovative textile company today.

KEITH KOENIG City Furniture Keith Koenig, president of City Furniture, has an unwavering passion for serving the retail home furnishings consumer, transitioning from selling waterbeds, to offering a full line of furniture and home accents, to adding an upholstery factory and licensed Ashley Home Stores. Its energetic, fun and entrepreneurial culture is based on a guiding purpose, “To enrich people’s lives and make the world a better place.” With 28 stores, it is the number one furniture store in South Florida and among the Top 100 retailers nationally with more than 1,500 associates and an aggressive college recruiting program. Stores feature amenities like a wine and coffee bar plus same-day delivery and free shipping.

Sales associates assist guests and process orders on iPads, trucks are fueled by clean, compressed natural gas and 98 percent of waste is recycled.

In 1971, Keith’s late brother, Kevin, opened Waterbed City in Fort Lauderdale with a few thousand dollars. Keith joined his brother in 1972 while still in college and they soon became partners. When waterbed sales declined in 1990, the brothers added innerspring mattresses. In 1994, they opened the first full-line City Furniture store. Since then City Furniture has grown dramatically and added 12 Ashley Home Stores across South Florida.

City Furniture is known for generously supporting dozens of charities, ranging from the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, City of Hope and the AntiDefamation League to the Doreen Koenig Blessed Beginnings Maternity Center at Holy Cross Hospital, the Archdiocese of Miami, University of Florida Foundation, Museum of Discovery and Science, and Habitat for Humanity. It is the only company to win Philanthropic Company of the Year in the Broward and Miami-Dade counties in the same year.

Paul B. Toms Jr., chairman and CEO of Hooker Furniture Corp. has diversified the company founded by his grandfather in 1924 through acquisitions, growing it from a mid-sized niche case goods manufacturer into one of the top five furniture resources in North America, listed on the prestigious NASDAQ Global Select. The Hooker family of brands includes Hooker Case Goods and Upholstery, Bradington-Young, Sam Moore, Shenandoah, Home Meridian International, Pulaski, Samuel Lawrence, Prime Resources International, Accentrics, Samuel Lawrence Hospitality and H Contract. An early adopter, the company is a model of ethical business practices, advanced information systems, innovative product designs, environmental stewardship, and a broad social media presence.

Mr. Toms joined Hooker in 1983, when it was a case goods company with three manufacturing facilities. He worked his way up, becoming Chairman and CEO in 2000.

In response to the groundswell of lower-priced imported case goods, he led the company through a complete shift in business model, becoming an importer of residential case goods and upholstery and a manufacturer of residential upholstery. Strategic acquisitions include Bradington-Young, Sam Moore, Shenandoah Furniture and Home Meridian International in 2016, which more than doubled the size of the company.

Ever focused on serving others, Mr. Toms has positioned Hooker to be an involved and generous corporate citizen in the industry and community. His voluntary board service includes the High Point Market Authority, the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation, Home Furnishings Council, the American Home Furnishings Alliance, the International Woodworking Fair, High Point University, the Boys & Girls Club of the Blue Ridge and the Harvest Foundation, a private health care conversion foundation focused on improving health, education and quality of life in his home town. Mr. Toms received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Home Furnishings Alliance in 2012.

MEET THE HALL OF FAME’S FIRST CURATOR AND HISTORIAN: The American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame has named its first Curator, an important step in fulfilling the part of its mission to preserve the history of the home furnishings industry and to tell our story. Kyle Thomas Hughes, Ph.D., with experience in the conservation and study of texts and objects, as well as research, teaching and public outreach, joins the Hall of Fame after serving as a visiting research associate at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. A native of High Point, Dr. Hughes also presented public talks and evening lectures for the university’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

He will focus on preservation and expansion of our memorabilia and historic collections, digitizing our documents, guiding the development of the industry’s timeline history, and supervision of our proprietary oral history initiative. In addition, he is taking a leading role in the development of exhibits for the industry and the public as we pursue a permanent home in the near future.

WRITING OUR HISTORY: Unbelievably, there is no written history of the home furnishings industry in the U.S. and there is no other organization doing so. The Foundation is taking a lead in researching, writing and conserving our priceless historical records and materials. Through our proprietary oral history program, our memorabilia, our library and ongoing research by a professional historian and writer, we are actively compiling a comprehensive timeline of retailing, manufacturing, marketing and the supply chain history so that one day, we will be able to say, “This is our history. This is our story.”

A TREASURY OF MEMORABILIA: The Foundation provides guidelines and resources to encourage companies to preserve their own histories. We systematically collect industry-related memorabilia and digital files of artifacts such as photographs, sketches, patents, company histories, oral interviews, manufacturing techniques, and marketing materials. Through state-of-the-art software developed for leading museums and historical societies, we catalog memorabilia in order to make it available for ongoing research on the retail, design, manufacturing and supplier histories of the American home furnishings industry. Our goal is to make our history relevant, accessible and entertaining.

The exhibit includes photos and the innovations of the 113 members of the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame. Touch screen kiosks offer biographies, videos and oral histories of the members of The Hall, focusing on the spirit of our leaders and their contributions to the American home furnishings industry.

Located at the entrances of Furniture Plaza and Plaza Suites, a walkway of handsome bronze plaques identifies each member of the Hall of Fame.

TELL US YOUR STORY: The American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. invites members of the home furnishings industry to share their special stories, memories, experiences, historical accounts, and reflections for its “Tell Us Your Story” project which appears on our website.

Whether you participate at Market in the Tell Us Your Story video project or submit your story on our website, we want to know YOUR story.

The American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. was founded on February 22, 1988 by a group of executives who recognized the need to preserve our heritage and honor our leaders.

As an international, industry-wide organization, our mission is to preserve the history of the home furnishings industry and to celebrate the exceptional individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the U.S. home furnishings industry. Each fall, individuals whose leadership and outstanding achievements have contributed to the innovation and development of the U.S. home furnishings industry are inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame at the High Point Market. The Walk of Fame and Wall of Fame are permanent tributes to their rich legacies.
