Principal's Message Holy Family Community, I’ve been fortunate to be a part of many significant endeavors at Holy Family High School. None of them left me feeling more grateful, or more proud, than how I feel toward everyone in our Holy Family community for what we have accomplished so far this year. After being forced into remote learning to finish the 2019-20 school year, we resolved to welcome our students back in person for the 2020-21 school year. After lengthy planning with local health officials, Holy Family was one of only a handful of high schools in the state to begin the school year in-person, and we are now on the doorstep of making it through the entire year. Our students have thrived academically, socially, artistically, athletically and spiritually. I am extremely proud of our community members for their willingness to put in-person learning and the safety of our community first. Managing COVID-19 has become a way of life for us all, but it never gets easy. What we have accomplished collectively is worthy of genuine celebration. The Holy Family Tiger Gala is always an occasion for some fulfillment and enjoyment. But we’ve never celebrated just the simple fact that our students are in school, in-person. This year is different. This year, every member of the Holy Family community was touched by an incredible act of generosity. Last August, a guardian angel donated significant funds which enabled us to install a state-of-the-art air purification system that played a major role in our ability to successfully navigate through the year. I’m certain you have the same sense of gratitude and appreciation for this generous act as I do. My sincere hope is this gesture serves as inspiration as we look to use funds raised at the 2021 Tiger Gala to install a more efficient HVAC system to complement our new air purification system. In the past, improving indoor air quality was oftentimes viewed as a luxury. Now it needs to be viewed as essential. Thank you for your continued support. Your generosity allows us to fulfill our mission as we prepare our students to be strong Catholic leaders. Pax Christi, Matt Hauptly Principal Holy Family High School

Fundraising in 2020 In a year that brought many challenges and significantly altered fundraising campaigns and events, Holy Family adjusted. The Holy Family Advancement Department found creative ways to hold annual fundraising events like the Tiger Gala, Tiger Golf Classic, Tiger Fun Run, and the Christmas Tree & Wreath Fundraiser. Holy Family also executed fundraising campaigns for Colorado Gives Day and the Annual Appeal. Additional fundraising was also initiated on a new tennis complex on the Holy Family Campus. The first-ever tennis facility of its size in the Archdiocese of Denver will feature seven new championship quality courts.

Giving is a long-standing hallmark of the Holy Family culture. Sustaining our school’s deep traditions is rooted in a partnership with our loyal alumni, current and past parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends. Each generously make Holy Family's success a priority every year.

Holy Family places the student experience firmly at the center of all our work. It is important to understand that dollars raised are the critical resources necessary to offer the opportunity of a first-class Catholic education, propelling our students into the world as strong Catholic leaders.

Holy Family prides itself on being a community of faith with a commitment to academic excellence. Your generosity empowers us to consistently advance our mission and improve the overall Holy Family experience - serving as a catalyst that allows us to hire the finest teachers, provide exceptional academic support, and enhance all aspects of school operations.

“Thank you to our entire community for their unwavering support during a year of increased need,” said Eric Nakayama, Holy Family’s Director of Advancement. “Successful fundraisers are truly a collective effort. Football Recap 2020 did a number on people across the board. High school football in Colorado was no different. Things certainly looked a lot different for the Holy Family Tigers, who were placed in the newly formed Colorado League with opponents from Niwot all the way down to Colorado Springs making up their shortened six game regular season. On paper, the Tigers looked to be one of the top teams in the league.

The 2020 Holy Family Tigers, Colorado League Football Champions.

Senior wide receiver Liam Gray with an incredible catch versus Lutheran.

Family struggled against the eventual state champions and could never dig out of an 21-0 first half hole that the Demons put them in.

Coach Mike D. Gabriel and his Tigers promptly went about their business and went a perfect 6-0 during the regular season winning those games by an average of 34 points.

It was a tough pill to swallow for a team that had championship aspirations, but the coaches and players alike will be able to look back at the chaotic 2020 season and realize what a success it really was.

It set them up as the No. 2 seed in the Class 3A playoffs and allowed them to host their opening round game against Western Slope League runners-up Evergreen. Holy Family scored on the first play of the game, an 80yard pitch and catch from quarterback Michael White to Oscar Sena that set the tone. The Tigers would roll to a 41-6 victory to move into the state semifinals against Durango.

The Tigers had seven players on the All Colorado League team, including Offensive Player of the Year Trevin Johnson (RB) and Special Teams Players of the Year Liam Gray (K). Gabriel was also named league Coach of the Year. Also earning all-league honors were Cord Kringlen (OL/DL), Justin Trostel (LB), Brody Welch (OL), Michael White (QB) and Brady Samaras (LB).

It was the next week, when the Tigers season would come to an end. Holy

Gray, Kringlen, Johnson and Welch also were selected to the CHSAA’s All-State first team. Trostel and White made the second team.

The Tigers also place 19 players on the Academic All-State team and posted an overall team GPA of 3.24. It was also a year of firsts for the Tigers, who will send two players to Division I schools. Kringlen committed to perennial power Boise State and Liam Gray will play at Coastal Carolina for the Chanticleers, who finished in the top 25 last season.

Cord Kringlen’s Journey in Catholic Education coaches come to your house and sit down with the entire family to sell their school. Now the onus falls on the player to do a lot of leg work to get noticed, and most of it is done virtually.

Even when Cord Kringlen was a blonde curly haired kid in elementary and middle school at Nativity Faith & Reason, he knew what he wanted and he was going to do everything possible to make it happen. When he stepped through the doors at Holy Family for the first time as a freshman in 2017, his desire to succeed only grew.

“I was on Twitter showcasing technique work videos, game tape, and connecting with coaches and just reaching out to them,” said Kringlen, who was a 2020 All-State selection and was named All-Conference three times. “It was fun, but it was also a challenge. It can get frustrating, especially when the communication breaks down with some schools.” school years. “My faith has helped me through my football journey because there were times when I didn’t think I could do it or that I wasn’t good enough. It gave me strength.”

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Kringlen is headed to the blue turf of Boise State next fall to play football for the Broncos – one of the most successful NCAA football programs of the last 20 years. But he is not going there based solely on his incredible football acumen. There is so much more to him that made him a sought-after target during the recruiting process for top schools across the country. He is a young man of faith - something of which he is extremely proud. He is also an excellent student - earning three Academic All-State awards. “My Catholic education has been my foundation,” said Kringlen, who attended Pre-K at St. Louis Catholic School before continuing on to Nativity for his elementary and middle SPRING 2021 | 10

“I knew when I started playing football that it was something that I loved and I would always want to do. Football can be humbling, I feel fortunate to make it to this point,” he said. “But I am not done yet. There is still a lot more I can do within football.” Kringlen became a full-time starter on the Holy Family offensive line for head coach Mike D. Gabriel as a sophomore and it wasn’t too long afterward that the college looks started coming his way. He took his first recruiting trip following his sophomore season to the University of Colorado and “ever since that day, it has been non-stop,” he said. He eventually chose Boise State over offers from Penn, Harvard, Colorado St., Wyoming, Fresno St., and San Diego St. among others. But gone are the days of the “traditional” recruiting process, the one where

Throw in a global pandemic and things became more complicated for both sides of the recruiting process. “Once the pandemic started, I knew I needed to make a decision on which school to attend,” said Kringlen, who made his verbal commitment to Boise State before his senior season of football at Holy Family even began. With the entire process behind him, Kringlen was able to just go out and play, not worrying about having to impress certain college coaches. “Cord’s work ethic is infectious, he is a focused leader who is loved by his teammates and coaches,” said head coach Mike D. Gabriel. “He is one of the finest athletes we’ve ever had at Holy Family, more than that, he is a great young man.” Kringlen was one of seven Tigers to earn 2020 All-Colorado League honors along with fellow Division I commit Liam Gray (Coastal Carolina). He anchored an offensive line that was one of the best in recent Holy Family history and guided the Tigers to the

playoffs, where he finally got a chance to experience a playoff win. “One of the best feelings I’ve ever had on the football field was when we beat Evergreen in the first round of the playoffs this year. We finally got past that ‘first round wall’ that we had run into my first few years,” he said. “It was a turning point for Holy Family and it was really just a fun game to play in.”

for myself,” said Kringlen. It made it more fun for me, more competitive, more of a challenge – they weren’t going to sit back and let me run over them.” Kringlen will graduate from not just Holy Family but from his Catholic school education this May with absolutely no regrets. Knowing that he did everything the right way in the classroom, in faith, the training room and on the field. But that still didn’t stop him from offering up sage advice to those who will be following in his rather large footsteps.

and athletics throughout his journey in Catholic education. He has inspired countless current and future Tigers along the way. One thing is certain, the Holy Family community is proud of Cord Kringlen – his legacy extends far beyond the football field.

“Even though it may seem that you are doing all you can right now, you’re not. There is always more you can do. There is always another level you can get to. You’re never done and you should never be satisfied with your work. Go until you can’t anymore,” he said. Cord Kringlen’s faith served as his foundation as he excelled in academics

Most games were fun to play in for No. 78. He had obviously made a name for himself and opposing teams were always trying to game-plan around him and his movements. Which meant there were always opponents on the other side of the line of scrimmage that were up to the challenge and trying to make a name for themselves against a Division I recruit. “I definitely saw that, but I wasn’t going to allow my opponents to show me up. Because if I were in their position, and I was going up against a guy that was going on to play college football, I would definitely try and make a name SPRING 2021 | 11

Holy Family Alumni Responding to the Call To Serve Father Marty Lally '68 Of the dozen Holy Family alumni currently active in religious life, several point to their experience at Holy Family as a guiding force in their decision. For Father Marty Lally ‘68, three former Holy Family faculty members stand out. “Sister Mary Kenneth was my English teacher and figured into my first thought of vocation – which was to teach English,” he recalled. “Sister Mary Aquin and Sister Aline Dalton, our principal, were also big influences on me.” “I was also really inspired by the Priests who served at Holy Family during my time, particularly Father Patrick Kennedy. I later was Father Kennedy’s assistant pastor for a time and in his retirement, he lived in the parish where I was then pastor,” Father Lally said. “The thought of Priesthood really formed sometime in the late part of my junior year and intensified during my senior year,” he added. “My observation of the Priests and the Sisters was that they were doing something important with their lives and were so dedicated to the parishioners and students. I was inspired by their dedication and their selflessness. And they were happy. It appeared to me that they enjoyed what they did and enjoyed one another. That drew me in.” SPRING 2021 | 12

Fr. Lally at Holy Family Parish.

“The Priests were examples of really good men, working to be holy, wanting to do everything they could for the people of the parish and the students in the school. I felt very called to share that kind of life. They were so different! Each one an individual and yet they let us see that they were in this together and they supported one another. That was a major attraction for me.” “I know clearly that my vocation was born at Holy Family. I am deeply and profoundly grateful. As an added blessing,” Fr. Lally said. “I have been honored to be the pastor of Holy Family Parish for the past 8 years.”

5 Deacon John Stapleton ’05 will become the latest Holy Family alumnus to join the hold orders when he is ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Denver this May. “The education at Holy Family prepared me for priesthood through the joy I experienced in discovering

the Lord in my studies. I would recall the joy I experienced at Holy Family throughout my seminary formation,” said Deacon Stapleton. “My Sacred Scripture class during my sophomore year helped guide my decision to become a priest. That year I received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and as I prepared to receive the sacrament the Lord deepened my relationship with Him. As I studied Sacred Scripture, I discovered how God lovingly walked with me throughout my life.”

The Growth of STEM and Robotics

HOLY FAMILY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2017

When Trudy Acosta arrived at Holy Family as a teacher in 2016, STEM-related course offerings in Computer Science and Engineering were introducing students to the basic disciplines - five years later she, along with colleague Joe Bravo, former teacher Nate Golter and new faculty member Jack Assaf, have built an engaging and challenging program that has sparked interest while promoting critical thinking and problem solving among Holy Family students. “Our STEM offering prepares students for college and allows them to further explore opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Acosta said. “Many states now require one year of computer science as part of their high school graduation requirements, while Colorado does not, the Holy Family curriculum strongly encourages it - giving Holy Family students a competitive college resume.” Currently, Holy Family offers an Intro to Computer Science course along with two AP courses: AP Computer Science Principals and AP Computer Science A (both give college credits). In addition, Engineering I & II are also offered.

Mrs. Acosta works with Junior Peter Drapeau on a Flippy Do - a tool that and easily translate between decimal and binary numbers.

Acosta earned a Computer Engineering degree from the University of New Mexico and spent the first dozen years of her career as a computer programmer for IBM. After taking time to start her family, she began teaching at St. John the Baptist in Longmont before bringing her passion for educating students to Holy Family.

on. STEM powers all of them. It’s how science gets turned into innovation. It’s problem-solving. When we think about science, it’s about understanding the world. When we think about STEM, it’s about how we understand the world and how we make it better for ourselves.

“The Denver/Boulder area is a growing technology hub with several large companies and an ever-growing list of start-ups,” she said. “As a result, many of our student’s parents have jobs in STEM-related fields, so there is certainly a built-in awareness and interest level.” In fact, the National STEM Job Growth Index highlights metro areas commonly known as STEM job growth strongholds. Denver ranked 3rd on the list only behind Charlotte, NC, and Austin, TX.

The Growth of STEM and Robotics continued

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the national average wage for all STEM occupations was nearly double the national average wage for non-STEM occupations. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects an uptick in most STEM occupations over the next decade. According to their predictions, there will be 8.5 million STEM workers by 2028 with positions in computing and engineering leading the way. Those who are interested in pursuing STEM in college could have further opportunities to find jobs. Many businesses have faced problems with STEM-related jobs in recent years, the issue isn’t in their creation, but rather the inability to fill a large category of them. Thus, the emphasis on STEM education has grown in recent years as the digital economy has increased demand for ever-higher technical skills among graduates joining the workforce.

Mr. Assaf working with students in his Engineering II class.

“It is not all about salaries,” Acosta said. “I teach my students they can use STEM for social justice, they can use STEM to develop things to make the world a better place - with technology you truly can change the world.” STEM curriculum in schools around the country have implemented robotics labs and computer coding classes to foster growth and development in the opportunities created by the information age. Enter Jack Assaf. He joined the Holy Family faculty in 2020 with an eye on building the robotics program and believes competitive robotics can be a game-changer for our students.

“I loved playing with LEGO train sets – and still do. I reveled in the ability to control the train's speed from afar,” he said. “I was very blessed to have parents who both work in education; my dad worked at a high school and when I was seven he brought home the first iteration of the LEGO Robotics kits. I was hooked.”

Current Holy Family students in both Engineering II and AP Computer Science Principles use robots as part of their coursework. Assaf hopes to eventually have a robotics course added to the Holy Family curriculum. “A robotics program allows students to tie together many of the skills and attributes that are more challenging to grow and develop in a traditional classroom setting. By their very nature, things will go wrong with the robots. This teaches the students that failure is a necessary part of growth,” said Assaf. “Additionally, no one person can design/build/code the whole robot - teamwork is crucial. Students must also use knowledge from many of their classroom subjects at the same time such as physics, computer science and math. It is true collaboration.” “Our students are in a lot of extra-curricular activities after school, thus having broad participation in the robotics club can be difficult,” he said. “Adding robotics as a course would definitely help with growth.” Assaf envisions a Holy Family robotics team that competes in interscholastic competitions where they would design, build and code a robot for a VEX competitions. Starting such a team would require some fundraising as the

robots are more complex and traveling to competitions would be necessary. Additional funding would also enable Holy Family to add a number of robots for coursework. Holy Family currently has one robot per 5-6 students, ideally there would be one robot per 3-4 students. “A robotics program also would allow Holy Family students the opportunity to apply for a myriad of scholarships. Colleges are excited about students who have robotics experience because they have learned valuable skills that will translate to a successful college career and eventually an effective worker in an ever-changing workplace,” Assaf added. “Students will be comfortable working in groups, resolving conflict, balancing budgets, meeting requirements, competing, coding, building and troubleshooting.” While both Acosta and Assaf hope to bring STEM and Robotics experiences SPRING 2021 | 16

to a wider audience of students, exposing girls to these fields is critical. Nationwide, in the last decade, the number of girls with STEM-related occupations has dropped. Consider that 51% of all college graduates are female and less than 11% graduate with a degree in Computer Science or Engineering. “I want our girls to consider this fast-growing discipline,” said Acosta. “Seeing women who work in these fields is valuable as well. Young girls need strong female role models, so they begin to see themselves as future engineers, mathematicians, and scientists.” Both Trudy Acosta and Jack Assaf are preparing Holy Family students for the future by creating a community of computer scientists and engineers. Their passion will inspire Holy Family students to reach their full potential.

Seniors Adam Granger, Izaak Siefken, Peter La, and Christian Lopez get their robot working on the field.

Alumni Spotlight Morgan Gray

HOLY FAMILY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2017

There are just some people who are cut out for the day-to-day grind of being in the medical field. Morgan Gray is one of those people. “I always knew I wanted to do something to help people and the thing I love about nursing is the patient care,” said Morgan, whose parents, Bill and Jennifer, could break out the family photo album and show pictures of their five year old daughter already dressed in her nurses scrubs.

Morgan Gray, after a distinguished soccer career at Holy Family, continued a midfielder at Wingate University.

Morgan graduated from Wingate Magna Cum Laude with a specialty in pediatric nursing. As the pandemic forced all hands on deck, she immediately began work as an online triage nurse. “It was a good learning experience for me, I’m thankful I could help my colleagues and patients right away,” she said. “Although it wasn’t in my degree focus area, the position really was a good way to start to my nursing career, especially in honing my assessment skills.”

“Being at the bedside, I am the patient’s comfort when they are in an uncomfortable situation. I become their voice and their biggest advocate.”

Morgan was eventually selected, out of hundreds of applicants, for a position on the Pediatric Progressive Care Unit at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. She has experienced first-hand the long days of wearing masks and protective gear in short-staffed units that push even the most seasoned nurses to their limits.

Morgan had her senior year at Wingate University (North Carolina) cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I lost the final three months with my classmates, but more importantly, that time in nursing school is critical as it’s when you are doing your preceptorship,” she said.

But there was never a doubt in her mind that it was exactly where she was supposed to be. “I recently received a letter from a child and parents that I had taken care of. They just thanked me and let me know that my efforts didn’t go unnoticed. It was a boost of confidence and God telling me that I’m

exactly where I’m supposed to be,” she said. “Being a nurse can be draining, it’s especially tough during a pandemic, but it is so rewarding.” In addition to graduating with honors from Wingate, Gray also accomplished it as a soccer student athlete. She became the first soccer athlete to graduate from Wingate’s nursing program. She is forever grateful for her time at Holy Family for teaching her those all-important time management skills needed for college life and beyond. “Holy Family just made college so much easier for me. Nursing school was hard, but I think I was successful because I had those skills I developed at Holy Family,” she said. There is one other thing that has kept her grounded as she embarks on her career. “My faith keeps me grounded. We’ve had kids pass away at the hospital and that is never easy,” she said. “Without knowing and believing in God, in Heaven and that their souls are now in a better place, it would be difficult. My faith gives me peace of mind.” SPRING 2021 | 17

Meet the New Coaches Sarah Brown Sarah Brown is far and away among the elite in Colorado when it comes to the game of lacrosse. In high school she was a two-time All-American and was again a twotime All-American in college at the University of Colorado. Now she is bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to Holy Family as the new girls lacrosse coach. “I am the type of coach that puts my players first. I care about them as people and what is happening in their life and then second comes lacrosse,” said Brown. “I want to inspire our girls, especially as they are growing up and finding out who they are. I think sports are a great outlet into finding out who you are.” The upcoming season for the Holy Family girls lacrosse team will be its first varsity season and after two successful junior varsity seasons. “As we are a first-year varsity program, creating our team environment is going to be fun,” she said. “There will be hard work - I want our players to be able to use these skills developed with lacrosse throughout their life.” After a successful career in Boulder for the Buffs, that included being named the 2018 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, Brown went to the University of North Carolina and served as a volunteer assistant for two seasons. able to have an impact on their lives spiritually, physically and mentally,” said Gallas. Gallas inherits a program that has been very successful over the past decade. She understands the expectations that come along with one of the top programs annually in Class 4A. “I want to continue all of the things that are the foundation of Holy Family’s volleyball success,” she said. “I also always believe that there is room for growth.” Brown has learned from some of the best in the women’s lacrosse world and plans to put her own unique spin on the Holy Family program this spring. When the Holy Family season is over, Brown — who was also in the U.S National Team tryout pool — will continue her playing career for Athletes Unlimited, the only women’s professional league in the country.

Jenna Gallas Jenna Gallas brings a wealth of experience to the Holy Family volleyball program. She served as the assistant director and head coach of Broomfield’s Ballistic Volleyball Club and most recently coached and taught at Bella Romero Academy in Greeley. “Teaching and coaching run parallel for me. The most important thing for me is getting to know the kids, having relationships with them and being

Gallas earned her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Fort Lewis College. She went on to earn her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University. “I think Holy Family is amazing because it sets a precedent for academic excellence as well as athletic excellence,” she said. “I am excited to be a part of a school that stresses both in such an amazing way.” In addition to her coaching duties, Gallas teaches Lifetime Physical Education at Holy Family. Her contagious smile and encouraging style of teaching has already endeared her to the students.”

Celebrating Holy Family’s Oldest Living Alumna to Los Angeles. Four of their children graduated from Holy Family prior to moving to the west coast: Patrica Dore ‘61, Thomas ‘64, Richard ‘65, and Mary Lonergan ’68. Her youngest two children, Paul and Theresa, completed high school in California.

Kathleen (Conboy) Feuerborn, Holy Family’s oldest known living alumna, recently celebrated her 100th birthday on February 22, 2021. Kathleen graduated in the Holy Family Class of 1938 alongside 46 of her classmates - which included her high school sweetheart Larry Feuerborn. She has a beautiful soprano voice and was involved in choir, cheerleading, Sodality, and served on the Lamp Post student newspaper staff during her years at Holy Family. Kathleen recalls walking to Holy Family every day – just over two miles each way. The joy of seeing her friends at school is something she cherished the most. She openly admits she “might” have been more concerned with being social rather than her studies. She also remembers Holy Family’s Homecoming dances. “A student would play the piano while others would sing and the rest of us would dance,” she said. In 1941 Kathleen and Larry married and eventually had six children. They lived and raised their children in NW Denver until 1967 when they moved SPRING 2021 | 20

Larry passed away in 1979. Kathleen enjoys California while holding Colorado close to her heart. She cherishes her 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, and 2 great-great-great grandchildren. Several Feuerborn and Conboy family

members have also graduated from Holy Family over the years. Kathleen credits her longevity to faith, family, and friends. She also credits her four years of Latin at Holy Family as paying dividends for her today as she enjoys crossword puzzles and word puzzles on her iPad. She loves calling her friends, zooming with family, checking Facebook, watching General Hospital and following the San Antonio Spurs. Kathleen’s faith is very important to her. She has adapted through life and is a very positive person who doesn’t judge others. She loves to hear young people talk about their ideas and dreams. Holy Family cherishes the ability to call Kathleen - and the Conboy and Feuerborn families - as alumni of our great school. Happy Birthday Kathleen!
