Principal's Message Class of 2022, It was a joy to play a role in a senior year that was, in many ways, blessedly normal. Normal is a hard word to use, given how the world has shifted since halfway through your sophomore year. It is a word I never thought about much until recently. None of you would have chosen the path the last few years have led you down. You have seen the suffering caused by the pandemic and the under and overreaction to it by institutions at every level of public, private, and civic life. You know the toll of lives lost, businesses destroyed, and schools shuttered. You can relate the stories you have read in the headlines and seen on your television screens to a challenge experienced within your own lives. These are not the adolescent struggles of every generation of American teens. There is nothing in my generation's experience that even compares to it. You have lived through times of great trial and strife. You know what you are capable of enduring and overcoming, and you have a reservoir of character that you were not fully aware of in March 2020. You know that you have the capacity for courage and resilience. With that knowledge should come confidence. Confidence is not false bravado or strutting self-importance but rather a genuine understanding of what you are capable of when you are placed under duress. Hand in hand with that confidence, a greater level of humility and compassion should come. You know how far you’ve come and how much you’ve endured. You must also remember there was a time when you felt that what you had to offer was insufficient. Courage is not a possession you acquire by overcoming one challenging moment and then something you have for the rest of your days. Instead, it is a habit that must be constantly formed, cultivated, and renewed repeatedly. We live in a world where the Christian message is not just refused but broadly ignored. A secular and relativistic point of view is currently seen as normal. But as we have seen during your time here, what is understood as normal for today is not a given for the future. It is not simply the way things are. The message that has sounded out worldwide for the last 2100 years is not extinguished by one era's failure to heed its call. Truth is not altered because a majority refuses to respond to it. The apostles entered into unfamiliar and unreceptive terrain to their message, but with courage and humility, they persevered. As you move into the next stage of your life, you will persevere if you continue to nourish the virtues that have been instilled over the last four years. I am grateful for all you have done to help Holy Family return to a better normal than we have ever been. You have made your mark on this place and our hearts! Pax Christi, Matt Hauptly Principal Holy Family High School

Graduation Speech Excerpts educators, and to the people in our lives who told us that we were more than just a speck of dust floating aimlessly through this life, those who made us believe that we were God’s chosen few, destined to walk a path of greatness that he has laid out in front of all of us. I encourage you to thank those who loved you through your mistakes and taught you the great importance of failure. Every journey begins with a single movement. Every day we attended this school, we tore ourselves from the sweet embrace of sleep and into the bitter cold of the Colorado morning.

In the last four years, my graduates and I have witnessed dramatic changes to the face of Holy Family and the face of the world. Without a doubt, I say that the Class of 2022 is a unique one. In our four years together, the plague came, ash floated down from the skies, and Nathan Willden somehow managed to do the splits without ripping his pants - most of the time. Yet none of these unpredictable events, many catastrophic, stopped us from getting the most out of our high school experience. We, the class of 2022, in this 100th year of Holy Family’s existence, are an anomaly. We are an outlier, and we are all stronger because of it. Every one of us will go on to do great things. So now, as we look outward at our lives outside of Holy Family High School, I encourage you not to forget the places from which you came. Every one of us owes a debt of gratitude to our GRADUATION 2022 | 8

And although it may have taken nagging from our parents, it was our choice whether or not we picked ourselves up into a world of uncertainty at the end of the day. Every test we took, every race we ran, every game we played, and performance we poured ourselves into is a testament to our initiative and drive. I hope that you took every chance you could to create

something beautiful while you were here because I know I did. And if you didn’t, take this new beginning as an opportunity to reinvent yourself in the beauty of the life you were given, reinvest yourself in this race you started 18 years ago because you’ve only just begun. At this moment, I’m reminded of a phrase I learned in one of my favorite movies, Donnie Darko. The term is “cellar door.” It is widely cited as one of the most beautiful phrases in the English language purely regarding the way it sounds. The literal noise it makes as it is spoken is said to hold beauty, regardless of the meaning of the words themselves. And so, even if high school was at times difficult for you to find meaning in, I hope you at least find some beauty in the fact that it happened. We went through these four years together, all of us, and there’s no one I would’ve rather done it with than all of you.

No matter how you may feel: whether you are afraid of the future, anxious about the present, or regretful about the past. Or if you're somehow fully confident in everything you've done. No matter how you may feel, you've significantly impacted the world around you. So, I ask that you all stay determined. Try to work towards whatever good you can. It doesn't matter if you go to college to become a lawyer, go to art school, work at some film studio, or whatever else the case may be. What matters is the company you keep, the lives you change, and that you do all of these things under the light of God.

We've been given the opportunity to know one another these past years and know the many leaders in our ordinary life. As we move forward, we should not stay isolated in our own dreams or goals. Because when we share the gift of ourselves, our world becomes so much brighter. And when we allow others to share that same gift with us, this gift is the gift of mutual love and support. This gift becomes like the blocks which build up our Minecraft world. To quote Kingdom Hearts, "By ourselves, we're no one. When other people look at us and see someone that's the moment we each start to exist."

Annika Achziger Sydney Alderfer Hannah Bach Anna Bakiera Lisa Banda Sarah Barlow Andrew Barrett Christopher Beatty Willow Belenski Nathan Boselli Lindsey Bovine Mitchell Brinton Ryan Brisnehan Brian Burch Andrew Callaway Emily Campbell Zachary Canaday Katelyn Caviness Estrella Chaffin William Chambers Oriana Chavez Raul Chavez Eric Chiusolo Courtney Christenson Colton Clingman Taryn Cook Tucker Corah Jonathan Coufal Jean-Paul Dalton Zachary Dietrich Cory Dillon Angelina Dinsmore Melanie Doty Sophia Duong Enzo Elliott Philip Elliott

Spread joy, be kind, and share your gifts, even if your gift is making someone smile.

We are called to love one another. But what does that mean? The way I understand it, to love means to want what is good for other people. To work towards that good and to listen to others. To sacrifice our own desires for the sake of those around us. Near or far. To not seek simply our gain, but rather to live in a way that aims to benefit others too. GRADUATION 2022 | 9

2022 Mr. & Ms. Holy Family Q&A The Ms. Holy Family and Mr. Holy Family awards are high honors traditionally given to one senior girl and one senior boy who, in the opinion of the administration, faculty, and staff of Holy Family, most embody the school's Mission as they have journeyed through their time here. Chinwe Onwere is the 2022 recipient of the Ms. Holy Family award, and for the first time in school history, we had a tie in the voting for Mr. Holy Family. Thus, we proudly recognize both Brennan Musgrove and Morgan Salter as Mr. Holy Family award recipients.

However, as I became involved in various activities and clubs, I began not only to find my sense of purpose but also a sense of belonging. Through my friends, teachers, and counselors, I developed meaningful relationships and connections with others more personally. I realized that I could be a leader and that I didn't have to wait for others when I could be the one to step up. To leave a legacy for me is not about how many clubs I participated in, what honors I received, or even all the hours I put into helping the school. For me, a true legacy is making a personal difference in the lives of the people I interact

with. To know that I had a positive impact on someone's life perhaps is the greatest gratification I could receive. “Being named Mr. Holy Family was a total shock for me. This award is a tremendous honor, and being named recipient was an incredibly humbling experience. Winning this award is not something you can strive for but rather something determined by the strength and integrity of your character. This means that I accomplished the mission

What words of encouragement do you have for future students?

I set out to complete four years ago – that of being in Christ’s hands and doing His work in my life. As I graduate from Holy Family, I hope to leave a legacy of kindness and humility. I always tried to put others first and was always ready to be a leader in any situation. I would encourage future Holy Family students to listen to each other. Communication is one of the most powerful yet underappreciated skills in today’s world. It is a skill I highly value and have used numerous times throughout my journey through Holy Family. Often, we find ourselves in a situation with a friend or person who needs help, and it is in those situations we can find ourselves struggling the most to give advice or help that person. My greatest ally in these moments was listening. I would also encourage future students of Holy Family to always be open-minded, listen to those around you, and seize every opportunity to better yourself and those around you!

I have so many words for future students coming into Holy Family that I could write a book! But here's some advice, go out of your comfort zone, experience new things, and get involved. Whether trying out a sport or a club or just hanging out and talking with people you usually wouldn't, DO IT! You only have four years of this, and they are some of the best years of your life if you make it so.

Annika Achziger Sydney Alderfer Hannah Bach Anna Bakiera Lisa Banda Sarah Barlow Andrew Barrett Christopher Beatty Willow Belenski Nathan Boselli Lindsey Bovine Mitchell Brinton Ryan Brisnehan Brian Burch Andrew Callaway Emily Campbell Zachary Canaday Katelyn Caviness Estrella Chaffin William Chambers Oriana Chavez Raul Chavez Eric Chiusolo Courtney Christenson Colton Clingman Taryn Cook Tucker Corah Jonathan Coufal Jean-Paul Dalton Zachary Dietrich Cory Dillon Angelina Dinsmore Melanie Doty Sophia Duong Enzo Elliott Philip Elliott

High School is when you figure out who you are, so surprise yourself. By the time you graduate, you should have talked to or hung out with everyone in your class at least once. Get to know the faculty and staff. They are not here to make your life harder. They are here to make your life easier. They want to see you succeed and grow as a person and a student. Don't be afraid to fail. Throughout your tenure at Holy Family, you will fail and be humbled. I have failed tests and didn't understand things at times. It's going to happen, you can't succeed in life if you don't fail, and if you don't fail, you're living too cautiously; that's not a fun life. So go out and make mistakes - they will help you succeed and are something to look back at and laugh at with friends. Finally, and most importantly, go out and have fun; it's high school, and it only happens once. Put everything out there and when you graduate,

make sure you have no regrets. Have fun with your friends and enjoy life as much as you can because, in the blink of an eye, you graduate, and the chapter of your book you thought wouldn't end will. So experience it to the fullest!

3A No. 4 doubles

Kylie Horning & Alesandra Wise The Tigers No. 4 doubles team of Kylie Horning and Alesandra Wise became just the third Holy Family team to win a state title when they captured the top spot in No. 4 doubles at Colorado Springs' Memorial Park. After losing twice to the team from D'Evelyn, Horning and Wise proved that the third time is the charm with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory.

100-meter hurdles & 300-meter hurdles Skylar Hawk

One of the most decorated female track athletes Holy Family has ever seen – she is on the school record board eight times – Skylar Hawk ended her prep career with a bang. Hawk won both the 100-meter hurdles (16.06 seconds) and then, in one of the better finishes of the entire meet, defended her 300-meter hurdles title by stumbling over the finish line to win by .08 seconds.

3A 4 x 100-meter relay

Griffin Eastman, Pierce Kunz, Dom Neely & Grayson Arnold 42.40 (all-time 3A record) On Saturday of the state meet, the quartet of Neely, Byrne, Kunz, and Arnold won the 4x200 in a 3A record time of 1:27.86. Then on Sunday, with Eastman taking the spot of Byrne, the 4x100 team went 42.40 seconds (another record) to win.

Spring Athletics Recap Baseball Expectations were extremely high after a run to the state title game in 2021 and the return of two-time state title-winning coach Marc Cowell to the Tigers dugout. But the magic of the previous season never materialized, and the Tigers, despite a 13-10 record this spring, did not make the 32-team regional playoff bracket. Holy Family finished with a .321 team batting average, led by senior Jared Delgado's .491 clip and Dillon Dahlgren's .455 -- both were all-conference selections, along with junior pitcher Jacob Syverson.

Girls Lacrosse The Tigers were in solid control against the eventual champions from Green Mountain early in the year when the injury bug hit the first time, and it would be the last game that coach Sarah Brown's team would play at full strength in 2022. But through it all, the Tigers persevered and made the playoffs and won the program's first playoff game, when they defeated Eagle Valley in the first round. The program also had its first college commit in Sidney Edmonds, who will play at Colorado Mesa. Her 78 goals landed her on the All-State honorable mention list alongside sophomore Julia Hodell.

The Tigers were the team to beat after winning the school’s first state title in 2021. In what will likely go down as one of the most impressive years in Tigers track and field history, seven different school records were either matched or beaten this season. There were two outright league champions this spring for Holy Family, and the Tigers tennis team was one of them (girls track was the other.) The Tigers were strong on the doubles side, where every group was a first-team NCAC selection. It would be the last time Mason, who will play her college golf in southern California at Pomona College, would don the purple and gold after she received a prestigious sponsors exemption to the Colorado Women's Open the same week as state. By qualifying the whole team, though, head coach Heikke Neislen was able to replace Mason with one of his own players, and it allowed the Tigers young foursome of Ansley Schnelle (Jr.), Leisel Heitz (So.), and the freshmen twins Finley and Fiona Holmes to experience state. The Tigers would finish 11th overall at Tiara Rado G.C. in Grand Junction.

31st Annual Holy Family Tiger Gala The 31st Annual Holy Family Tiger Gala was held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Omni Interlocken in Broomfield. It was a memorable evening that showcased the generosity of the Holy Family community as over $550,000 was raised. We were honored to present the prestigious St. Joseph Award to Steve Blair as part of the evening. Steve has been influencing lives in the Holy Family community for 40 years as a teacher and a coach. Steve was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, and as we were dealing with the news, we started to brainstorm ways to honor him when a remarkable student approached school administrators. Senior Luke Hixson had begun work on a detailed plan to resurface the school’s aging track, complete with concepts, all to honor Mr. Blair. The project grew to become the Steve Blair Track & Field project with Steve's assistance. We were blessed by a generous $250,000 gift to launch the initiative, followed by the faculty and staff of Holy Family coming together and pledging $40,000. That inspired a $50,000 matching gift pledge from 1997 Holy Family graduate Danny Gryzmala and his wife, Amy. We were also able to raise over $31,000 in online gifts from individuals across the country. The funds raised at the Tiger Gala took the project over the finish line, and construction on the new track began in May! Thank you to everyone who participated in the memorable evening in the 100-year history of Holy Family High School. GRADUATION 2022 | 18

Alumni Weekend Holy Family’s Alumni Weekend was held June 9 – 12. Hundreds of alumni, friends, and families joined us for a weekend filled with memories, camaraderie, and fun. The weekend kicked off on Thursday, June 9, with the Hall of Honor induction ceremony. The Hall of Honor recognizes extraordinary individuals from Holy Family’s long and rich history. This year, we inducted Holy Family’s first state championship team, the 1945 boys golf team; teacher and coach Steve Blair; former principal Sister Mary Rose Lieb; life-long supporters of Holy Family, Henry ’46 and Eloise Pohs; and former teacher, coach, and staff member, Frank Evans. Holy Family alumni, parents, and friends gathered at TopGolf Thornton the following night to celebrate the Holy Family community. On Saturday, the Holy Family Golf & Tennis Classic was held simultaneously at the Broadlands Golf Course and the Holy Family tennis complex. Over $43,000 was raised to benefit the Sister Aline Daulton Scholarship Fund, which awards half-scholarships to deserving Holy Family students.

Dorcas Evans, wife of the late Frank Evans, at Holy Family Hall of Honor ceremony joined by Assistant Principal Mike D. Gabriel ’94 and Mike G. Gabriel ’70.
