Message from the Executive Director

As we wrapped up the 2022-2023 fiscal year, it was our first year since 2020 that COVID did not play a significant role in how we provide our services. It created an opportunity to reflect on those past few years with full credit going to our staff who remained flexible, were able and willing to pivot in how they delivered services, and never once lost sight of the critical role they play in our community, helping vulnerable youth, seniors, and families.

We are now seeing the full impact of the pandemic. Never have we witnessed the complexities and mental health issues we see across all programs, the challenges those on limited incomes face making ends meet, and the increased homelessness and housing instability. Desperate people, families, and neighbours are looking to us to help. And because our community walked this journey with us, we could offer the assistance that so many required, thanks to the support of our partners, funders, and donors Their generosity has been humbling. Alan Kwinter, our founding board chair for 19 years, has stepped into a past chair role and handed the baton to Nancy Farran, Hollyburn’s newest board chair.Alan saw and realized an organization’s vision that could fill much-needed community gaps and help create a legacy of quality service across the North Shore. His dedication to giving and helping others supported the development of a strong and active Board.

This past year brought in new programs, such as ReWired, an employment and work experience program created for youth to pursue careers in the skilled trades. Funding through the Women and Gender Equality Program has created an opportunity to trial an evidence-based program that looks at the impact of immediate counselling on people experiencing gender-based violence. To ensure success for the clients that we have housed, we created a Tenant Support Worker.

Our Board of Directors convened to update our Strategic Plan, creating a pathway of quality, ingenuity, and community compassion in everything we do. Within that retreat, we began planning for this fiscal year as we look toward a year-long celebration of our 20th anniversary.

Looking forward, we have so much to celebrate. In our 2024-25 fiscal year, we will see more much-needed housing through partnerships with Sanford Housing and the District of West Vancouver. We will host celebrations as we reflect on our past twenty years and envision our next twenty years, where we hope to continue our work to support those facing adversities in our community with the energy, compassion, and leadership we have for the past twenty years.

Respectfully,

Board of Directors

Who We Are

Hollyburn continues to evolve to best meet the needs of our North Shore youth, seniors, and families who face adversities due to housing instability, poverty, violence, and other social issues. We do this by asking questions and listening to their feedback and needs and from there we develop programs and services to fill those gaps. Our work aligns with our core values as we:

Serve with Integrity by providing a continuum of services that are proven effective through research, measured outcomes, and exceeding industry standards of practice.

Honour Diverse Perspectives by seeking and valuing input from all including those receiving, delivering, and having stakeholder interest in our services and programs.

Nurture a Community Of Caring by engaging and connecting our clients with common values and interests to empower, strengthen, and support their capacity, hear their voices, and promote their development, inclusion, dignity, and respect.

Lead the Way by meeting the emerging needs of our clients by creating services, accommodating personal circumstances, developing innovative programming, and striving for industry excellence.

Our Work in the Community

Many members in our community face housing instability, struggle to put food on the table, experience paralyzing anxiety, depression and feel unsafe.

Working through a housing crisis, unprecedented food and living costs, barriers to medical support and increased violence, Hollyburn breaks down these barriers to help those most vulnerable to stabilize their lives, build resiliency and move forward in a positive way.

We work with youth, seniors and families to flee homelessness and housing instability through a continuum of housing programs, such as our youth and senior safe houses, transitional housing programs, and support to secure sustainable housing.

We empower marginalized youth in our employment and our Youth Education Navigator programs to ensure a future of lifelong success.

We offer free counselling to support our community members torecover from the trauma they have experienced.

We support any individual or family who has experienced relationship violence, family violence, sexualized assault or criminal harassment. During our 2022-2023 fiscal year, over 900 youth, seniors, individuals, and families came to Hollyburn for assistance.

I didn’t want to have to go to court. I didn’t want to have to tell my story again. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that I would see Queenie and she would help to absorb my pain.

I can’t say enough about all the support I have had from Hollyburn. I have a very limited income and I couldn’t have managed without their help.
