ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21

Message from the Executive Director The hardships we have witnessed across the globe and within our community because of Covid-19, the systemic racism that exists within our Indigenous communities, the trauma and injustice people continue to face and the poverty, violence and homelessness we see every day across the North Shore continues to test our resolve as humans, as caregivers and as staff who are committed to making a difference.

Resiliency is necessary to overcome the challenges that life brings.

This second year of the pandemic has tested our resiliency and our capacity to show kindness towards others. Nonetheless, our staff has continued to support youth, seniors and families with vulnerabilities.

Despite their own struggles to remain balanced and positive, they have carried their commitment for their clients with empathic hearts and genuine caring.

Resilience: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness Covid-19 brought its own uncertainty as we settled into a new normal, following health protocols mandated by the Province and Health Authorities. With the arrival of the vaccine, there was renewed hope, but the variants continue to prove that this is not over yet. Even though life at work and personally has changed significantly, our staff has been resilient and flexible.

While remarkable progress was made finding housing for those in our community who have no place to live, there is so much more to do. Youth still require support and resources to accomplish the great things we know they can, and families still need interventions when

violence reverberates in the walls of their homes. The mental health of clients and staff is a concern and has become a focus of the leadership. Our strategic plan for 2021-2025, facilitated through Vantage Point, is now completed and active.

We are in the process of changing our name to “Hollyburn Community Services Society” to better express who we are and what we do. We look forward to pursuing some exciting possibilities and building our profile within the North Shore.

We work in the most collaborative, responsive and generous community. We have a solid, supportive Board of Directors. Our staff are strong, caring, and amazing. And, while our new world is still reverberating with this pandemic, we know we will succeed because we are resilient. We are better together.

Who We Are Our Focus: Hollyburn Family Services Society has a robust mission to end social issues in our community. We work and advocate to ensure individuals and families are safe from violence, that marginalized youth receive the tools to accomplish amazing things and that our youth, seniors and families have sustainable and affordable housing.

Our People: A progressive staff team of 30 individuals use their compassion, energy and creativity to find solutions to the challenging social issues that create barriers to those in our community.

Our Work in the Community: The hardships we witness in our community such as poverty, violence and homelessness continue to test our resolve as individuals who are committed to making a difference.

Undaunted by Covid-19, our staff continues to support the North Shore’s vulnerable youth, seniors and families who will continue to struggle with the impact of the pandemic.

We are persistent in our efforts to secure sustainable and safe housing, offer shelter from the streets, assist in securing employment and provide support for youth to access and excel in post-secondary programs. We are diligent in our efforts to support victims of violence, and our outcomes are remarkable in our endeavours to secure housing for our homeless elderly.

Through our organization’s commitment to incorporate the values of Truth and Reconciliation and combat racism, our cohesive and collective efforts ensure our mission of service delivery is provided through a lens of equality, information and kindness.

2020-21 Highlights As a result of capital funding through Reaching Home extensive repairs were under taken on the youth safe house and the three transitional youth homes Staff showed remarkable resilience and flexibility as we worked through four pandemic waves

We welcomed Nancy Farran and Kevin Evans to our Board of Directors

Over $100,000 in grocery gift cards and rent subsidies were provided to youth, seniors and families

Board and senior staff participated in a new five year strategic plan

Working with our partners has led to various stages of affordable housing developments

Policies and program orientations have been updated

The Board has formed a Housing Committee, External Relations Committee, Governance Committee and Finance and Investment Committee

To respond to the pandemic, staff pivoted and created flexible and safe alternatives for their clients.

Seniors Services Housing First for Seniors – Supporting Seniors to Remain Housed – Seniors at Housing Risk Outreach – Seniors Safe House – Transitional Housing Services include eviction prevention, one-on-one assistance to secure housing, pensions, rental subsidies and financial assistance Seniors are facing challenging times. This program provides age appropriate housing outreach support to North Shore seniors and families who are homeless or in danger of imminent housing loss.

Services include eviction prevention, one-on-one assistance to find appropriate housing and assistance filling out application forms (e.g.

BC Housing, SAFER, PP/GIS/OAS). We also strive to connect our clients to community resources, health services and social inclusion opportunities. We provide education around life skills, social skills and community resources in individual and group settings. The program manages the five bedroom Seniors Safe House, four apartments in the Marlborough building and six apartments in the Kimpton building. We also have priority referral arrangements with BC Housing, Kiwanis, Brightside, Cedar Springs PARC and other seniors housing providers.
