Marketing Communication Executive/Designer Jannah Omar

At the Club, we aim to make it easier for you. Forget about your daily “must do’s” and head down to the club simply and only to relax! Enter the family ‘nothing box’ for a while and create memorable moments to last. This issue of the Club’s magazine therefore focuses on gathering as a family or group of friends. It’s all about freeing up time to experience a hearty Weekend Brunch at the Club, lazing at the pool on a Sunday afternoon or losing track of time whilst catching up with all who are important in your life. R E F E R R A L C A M PA I G N W I N N E R BY JANNAH OMAR Congratulations to our May - July 2017 Referral Campaign winner, Mark Jordan! He walks away with a Family Sky Dining Experience worth over $200 onboard Singapore Cable Car.

In February 2016, we had to let go of Mr Tan Boon Phang after 46 years of committed service to the Hollandse Club due to the dire financial situation we were in at the time.

There will be more fun and exciting prizes to be won for the Referral Campaign, so gather all your friends to join our club and remind them to quote your name!

Unfortunately, we were misinformed about his family situation and apologise for any grievance caused to Mr Boon and his family in that respect. Mr Boon has only one child who is not married, does not have any grandchildren and has no dog.

We thank Mr Boon for his long standing commitment

So is it better to stay home? With such an exodus, Singapore must surely be deserted, and local attractions pleasantly quiet to visit? Wrong again. Theme parks and zoos are overloaded, the queue to visit the presidential Istana snakes halfway across Orchard Road, and every BBQ pit in East Coast Park will be booked. If you are lucky enough to get a table on the beach at Sentosa, you will be on display for the hordes of foreign workers, our less fortunate fellow expats, for whom even Tanjong Beach Club is out of reach, let alone a villa in Bali, and who settle for a walk to see silly ang mohs in bikinis. If there is anything I dislike more than paying $800 to fly to Bali, it’s queuing and sitting in a crowd of strangers. I’d much rather spend the weekend at the Hollandse Club pool with friends, sipping my Kiki juice, while my kids hit some balls at the tennis courts behind me.

and above all, private and exclusive. What fits that bill? Camping! The kids have been bugging me to go for a long time. Internet shows me my dream destination: Pulau Hantu, which means ghost island in Malay. Pulau Hantu it is a desert island on the south of Singapore. It can be reached by private boat only, and boasts a small campsite. With not much else available, you need to bring everything with you, down to your food and drinking water. Forget about Wi-Fi or even electricity. But there are lagoons, palm trees, coral reefs, all that against the magnificent backdrop of Singapore’s own skyline. There will certainly be no crowds. Well, apart from perhaps some ghosts.

The long weekend Expat life can be tough. So after enduring the hardships of Singapore, with its warm weather, swimming pools, airconditioned shopping centres, cocktail bars, and not to forget the live-in help, the expat needs a break. Thankfully, Singapore has many national public holidays, several of them creating that most excellent of breaks: The long weekend. With plenty of beautiful beaches and cultural sights less than two hours away, conversations between expats meeting for drinks or dinner therefore often revolve around two topics: Where did they go on their last trip? After having come to the realisation that one such weekend was around the corner, we looked at flights to visit a friend’s villa in Bali. It seemed we weren’t the only ones with this idea — flight prices had soared sky-high. Similarly, nearby resorts and ferries were fully booked months ahead. It is not just expats heading out on long weekends.

RECEPTION TEAM INTERVIEW BY JANNAH OMAR

Let’s meet and greet our lovely Reception team! These are the familiar faces greeting you everytime you step in the Club. Hello pretty ladies, can you introduce yourselves to us?

Bee: Hello! Everyone calls me by my short name ‘’Bee’’. My real name is Benazir. Ineke: My name is Ineke, married to Peter for 38yrs. We have three sons, three amazing daughters-inlaw and two grandchildren in UK & Oz, hence the need for my frequent trips to Perth! You all look very different, where do you come from? Bee: I am a Hindustani Muslim, born and raised in Singapore. Ineke: I am a Third Culture Kid, so talking about my country(s) would take up too much space. My mother is Dutch and father is English. Having lived in Holland, France, Iraq, England, Canada, Thailand, UAE, and now Singapore in 34 different homes, I do not easily put down roots. What do you like most about working at the Hollandse Club?

Bee: Working at Hollandse club allows me to interact with people from different countries and diverse cultures! It’s fascinating when members share their stories with us. Ineke: The walk up the hill. NOT! I love the variety of members, the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, and the sense of community, both with members and staff. Where and when can we find you?

Bee: I’m always at the reception. Hotel reservations, tennis/squash court rentals…you can find me about almost anything.

Ineke: Some people think I never go home! Not true, my bed is not to be found under the reception desk. However, you will usually find me around the reception area. What do you like most about your job?

Bee: I have amazing colleagues with a positive work attitude and very caring as well. We look out for each and share jokes to make it a fun working environment. I truly enjoy working with them. Ineke: I love the variety of tasks involved. But most of all, I love the team I work with. There is not one person, no matter what position they hold at the Hollandse Club, who is not willing to get stuck in and get their hands dirty. We are a true team, where we support and look out for each other. What are the biggest challenges?

Bee: We face challenges almost every day. Multitasking on really busy days is one of them! However, I ensure everyone leaves the club with a smile. Ineke: You will have seen the vast turnover of Reception staff. This job is not for the faint hearted and with the kind of commitment we require, ensuring a high standard, means not all are up to the job. We are still looking for someone like Bee and Anna, to join the team.

You can find Anna’s interview in our Aug/Sept issue.

You’ll find Arnott’s biscuits and other familiar Australian brands in the grocery aisles if you’re missing your Tim Tams. Or Australian or New Zealand wines or dairy products or … well, you’re pretty much covered. As well as meat in the supermarkets, there are many on-line butchers, such as Meat Club, which deliver fresh meat from Australia to your door. Many Aussies and Kiwis have made Singapore their home and have started businesses which have the Down Under touch, from restaurants to pop-up lifestyle shops. For instance, Common Man Coffee Roasters roasts their own coffee (or stop in and try their brunchstyle menu) or there is Jones the Grocer in Dempsey

Singapore is a popular destination for Australian and New Zealander expats; so, where do you go in Singapore if you feel like a little Antipodean flavour? The obvious first stops are the Australian International School (AIS) — you’ll glimpse their distinctive blue on blue stripes amongst the mix of uniforms on the Club Terrace after school hours — and the Australian and New Zealand Association (ANZA). Both organisations have a good mix of nationalities from around the globe with a fair helping of folks from Down Under. Flexibility training helps improve the range of motion of your joints and muscles. It also decreases your risk of injury. When your muscles are flexible, you are less likely to become injured during physical activity. It also reduces muscle soreness. During my 17 years of working in fitness, I saw many clients and friends in pain, suffering from tight muscles. So I decided to teach and train them in myofascial release. Myofascial release is a type of physical therapy The National Squash League came to a grinding halt in July when tired bodies collapsed after a gruelling 3 month season – probably more to do with the fact that some of our competitors fielded teams with an average age half of ours.
