was funny to hear that the tennis players can finally smash their tennis Also, the revamped Multipurpose Court has started hosting the weekly Kid’s Club which seems to be a hit! And not to forget, the Lobby flaunts hip new restrooms which you already tried out we guess. The Sports and Events team works hard to ensure we offer enough classes to stay in shape while keeping enough energy to spend playful time with family and friends. Ever since we placed one of our pianos at the Terrace, it has been spontaneously and skillfully played by Members, kids and adults alike, who enjoy sharing their love for music. The Laser Tag and Wipeout events attracted a large group of kids and teens who loved to be part of the thrill and had a great time. Also it is great to spot many members trying out the Aquafit classes on Monday mornings and seeing others dancing to the Latin beats in the Exotic Zumba classes. We have many more exciting things in store for you. Before the end of April, the Main Hall, the Amsterdam Room and the entire Reception area will metamorphosise into a vibrant and fresh look and feel. We will be offering boot camps for adults, more fun wipeouts for our younger members and friends, Quiz Nights with Jaxs Bistro and relaxing Sundays at the pool with DJ Paul. Also you can expect some boxing classes for adults and very soon a new Club towel that is so nice you will want to steal it. And... Movie Under the Stars is back! Offering cultural and arthouse movies such as Intouchables, to cater to adults as well. We are very proud to share we have reached 739 memberships and send a big welcome to all of our new Club members. Enjoy your read and have a great day or weekend ahead!

She prays for people who have passed away and she does a lot of social work. She has been with the Church of the Holy Spirit for 25 years and she visits houses on its behalf, distributing rations and cash aid. She does church volunteer work and attends

WIPEOUT! B Y H A F I Z WA H I D

Sunday calls for a fun time in the pool and nothing is better than having your kids enjoy themselves splashing in our own Hollandse Club swimming pool!

8

Combine it with inflatable bouncy castles and you get a recipe for rip-roaring fun. With help from our housekeeping and maintenance crew, who did a great job setting up the clown bouncy castle and the pool bouncy obstacle floats, the participants were treated to a different pool session in February. From 2pm to 5pm, we had a mini “wipeout” challenge, where the kids jumped 10 times in the Clown Bouncy castle before they could slip into the pool, and swim to the start of the pool bouncy obstacle float, all the while racing the clock. Lotte managed to toss off the other kids and came in the fastest at 42 seconds. Mia came in second at 45.44 seconds, while Fleur was third with a very close 45.46 seconds. To sum up, the turnout was spectacular — we had more than 45 kids turn up on the day. Kids (and a couple of adults — we know who you are!) enjoyed the obstacle float. The weather was scorching hot, but we sure did have a good time, dipping in the pool and a chilled drink from Jaxs Bistro.

M I C H E L I N S TA R ON A BUDGET BY CLAIRE WINTRAECKEN

In the world of fi ne dining, I often come across the term “Michelin star. A Michelin star is the Oscar for restaurants and chefs the world. Most chefs and restaurateurs in the world consider it a matter of prestige to become associated with a Michelin star. To me the term Michelin star always equals excellent classical French cuisine, cheese trolleys, dining rooms with all the trimmings of white linen, silverware and to top it all off, an extensive wine cellar. A restaurant where an evening out costs you a fortune. Last year, Michelin rolled out its fi rst Singapore guide, which spanned more than 35 diff erent cuisine categories. The guide gave 29 restaurants one-, two- and three-star ratings, while 34 were spotlighted in the Bib Gourmand category for off ering aff ordable, quality food. With the Singapore launch there was immediately a big surprise. Among the starred selections, Joel Robuchon Restaurant was the only restaurant to be awarded the coveted three stars. However, the most surprising news came with the award of a Michelin star to two hawker stalls,

The date is calculated differently in different countries which may base it on the Gregorian, lunisolar or Chinese lunar calendar and is celebrated on a full moon day in April, May or June. Several countries celebrate Vesak on the full moon day which falls in May. This year Vesak will be observed on the 10th or 11th of May in most of the countries that mark the day.

2017 Hollandse Club Junior Team Tennis The recent season of Team Tennis Finals was played in late March, with 39 Juniors playing weekly tennis matches over seven weeks, in three different playing divisions (Under 10/12/14), on Friday nights. It was really encouraging to see 16 juniors playing for the first time in a match-play environment and seeing their confidence grow over the season. We also saw a number of Juniors from the Under-12 division move into the Under-14 category challenging their skills in the older age bracket. The next seven-week season of Junior Team Tennis starts on April 21. Registration closes April 7 or when team quotas have been filled, so be quick! A new look at the tennis courts were a great way to kick-start this year’s Davis Cup tournament. To those who don’t have a clue of what the Davis Cup is, it could be described as the “World Cup” of the tennis world. And we have our own mini version of it right here at the Club. Held annually, it is a highly anticipated event by our tennis-playing members.

36

Refreshed and smartened up, the Club’s new look tennis courts no. 3, 4 and 5 played host to five teams. Two were made up of Dutch players, while the remaining three teams were a mix of Germans, Australians, New Zealanders and British, which made the tournament that much more competitive while remaining sociable. Team “Oops… Sorry Court 3!”, captained by Hester Moormann, won the competition. Such a splendid event, where tennis players of all levels got to socialise and more importantly, have a smashing day!

The words playing and cooking don’t often go together. For most people cooking is stressful, a chore, born out of necessity and for some, even a nightmare. But like anything we do in life, whether it’s learning to ride a bike, a new game or sport; they all take time to learn. Once we get good, that’s when we can start to play, have fun and enjoy ourselves. 5 tips to get you cooking from a novice to a pro! 1. START WITH EASY RECIPES I like to use recipe books that I love. Yes, there are a ton of recipes on the web, but a lot of them don’t necessarily work. Read the whole recipe; visualize yourself cooking it as you read the recipe. You don’t want to be in the midst of cooking and rushing to refer back to the recipe with dirty hands.

ing skills. Learn and discover about different foods available in Asia. Explore your local wet market and discover hidden gems. 4. CHOOSING THE RIGHT RECIPE Start with what you love to eat, if it’s steak, get obsessed with cooking the perfect steak. If it’s pasta – learn everything about pasta. Have fun with the discovery of food and cuisine. Explore and embark on your own culinary journey. 5. CONFIDENCE We’ve all heard the saying, “fake it till you make it,” and part of the cooking process is having a bit of confidence that you are making great food for loved ones! Even if you don’t feel that it’s the best food you’ve made, be proud of having a crack at it!

2. KNIFE SKILLS Use a sharp knife, you will enjoy cooking a whole lot more, it will take less effort and energy to cut and is a whole lot safer than using a blunt knife. You only need 1 or 2 good knives and a sharpener. Practice holding the knife properly and work on a slicing motion when cutting.

Despite the daily rush of life, a meal brings the family or friends together. It’s the best part of the day when you can strength bonds and communications with those you care about.

3. PRACTICE, PRACTICE & PERSEVERE We learn more from our mistakes if something doesn’t work out this time round I’m sure next time it can only be better. Practice your knife skills, be safe and start slowly but you’ll get faster over time. Practice your frying, baking, sautéing and other cook-
