Búsquedas arqueológicas en el sureste de Campeche

S

i bien el sureste del estado mexicano de Campeche se ubica en el mero corazón del territorio en el que floreció una de las más asombrosas civilizaciones de la historia humana, fue precisamente allí donde se extendían, todavía hace poco más de dos décadas, algunas de las lagunas más grandes en el mapa arqueológico del área maya. Vastas regiones al norte y al sur de la relativamente bien explorada zona Río Bec, conocida por su característico estilo arquitectónico, eran una terra incógnita. El panorama ha cambiado notablemente después de los trabajos de reconocimiento arqueológico que realizamos a partir del año 1996. En once temporadas de campo encontramos más de 80 sitios previamente desconocidos; también localizamos Oxpemul, Balakbal, Pared de los Reyes y Uxul, primera vez después de haber sido reportados por el arqueólogo norteamericano Karl Ruppert durante las expediciones que dirigió en la década de 1930.

El hecho de que, durante tanto tiempo, casi no hubo incursiones arqueológicas a estas extensas regiones se debe, sin duda alguna, a las dificultades de acceso.

La mayor parte del territorio se encuentra dentro de la despoblada Reserva de la Biósfera de Calakmul, cubierta por la selva tropical. En esta región kárstica no existen corrientes perennes de agua; las únicas fuentes naturales del preciado líquido son las aguadas, pequeños lagos que se llenan en la temporada de lluvia, pero casi todas se secan en el resto del año.

Por lo tanto, el trabajo en el área requiere el uso de vehículos, ya que es ineludible transportar no sólo el equipo y los víveres, sino también cantidades considerables de agua. Al establecerse la Reserva, en 1989, los pocos caminos que antaño habían usado los extractores de madera y del chicle quedaron abandonados y enmontados. Para acercarnos a los sitios arqueológicos, que habíamos localizado en las fotos aéreas o con ayuda de informantes locales, tuvimos que reabrirlos, quitando la vegetación con machetes.

El paisaje ligeramente ondulado se caracteriza por humedales –los llamados bajos–, que se empantanan o inundan durante la estación lluviosa, volviéndose prácticamente intransitables, por lo que sólo es posible trabajar en la temporada seca. Sin embargo, en diversas ocasiones las lluvias se precipitaron, los bajos se llenaron de agua y, no pocas veces, las dificultades al tratar de sacar los vehículos atascados en el lodo parecían insuperables.

Aunque una buena parte de cada temporada de campo consistió en labores que no tenían ninguna relación directa con la arqueología, los hallazgos impresionantes y a menudo inesperados rompieron la rutina, premiándonos con momentos de júbilo y sensaciones de victoria. Aparte de muchos conjuntos arquitectónicos pequeños, restos de poblados modestos, encontramos varios centros mayores con imponentes edificios y monumentos de piedra decorados en relieve, algunos con inscripciones jeroglíficas que aportaron datos importantes sobre la cambiante geografía política de la región. Además, los resultados de nuestras exploraciones han contribuido a la comprensión de los factores ambientales que condicionaron la localización de los asentamientos, de las relaciones con las áreas circunvecinas, así como de los procesos de cambio que vivieron las sociedades mayas desde los inicios del primer milenio a.C., cuando se establecieron los primeros poblados, hasta el siglo décimo d.C.; a partir de entonces, las partes central y meridional de la península de Yucatán quedaron prácticamente deshabitadas, debido a la desintegración de los otros poderosos estados, causada por una combinación de diversos factores, entre los que la sobrepoblación y el cambio climático con prolongadas sequías tuvieron un papel fundamental.

Uno de los descubrimientos más impactantes ocurrió en 2013, cuando iniciamos las prospecciones en el sector norte de la Biósfera de Calakmul, en la extensa región hasta entonces totalmente inexplorada. Las fotos aéreas nos llevaron a dos complejos de arquitectura monumental, conectados por una calzada y compuestos de diversas plazas dominadas por majestuosos palacios y templos piramidales. Entre los numerosos monumentos había estelas con fechas, revelándonos que la ciudad llegó a su apogeo en las etapas tardías del período Clásico (ca. 600 – 900 d.C.). La inscripción en una estela, única por sus glifos elaborados en estuco y con restos de pintura roja, menciona su erección en 751 d.C., designando el monumento de manera muy apropiada como “piedra roja” o chac tun, apelativo con el que bautizamos el sitio. En 2014 encontramos Tamchén y Lagunita, otros dos sitios mayores. Tamchén floreció particularmente en los periodos Preclásico Medio y Tardío (ca.

1000 a.C. - 250 d.C.) y fue uno de los asentamientos más tempranos en el centro de la península. Su nombre (“pozo profundo”) fue inspirado por la presencia de diversos chultunes (cavidades subterráneas para captar y almacenar el agua de la lluvia), algunos de profundidades inusitadas de hasta 14 metros. Lagunita, por otra parte, alcanzó su auge hacia finales del periodo Clásico (ca. 600 – 900 d.C.), cuando fue construida una magnífica fachada zoomorfa, característica del estilo Río Bec en la región colindante al sur. Los ejemplos más espléndidos de este estilo arquitectónico se encuentran en sitios como Chicanná y Hormiguero.

“Lagunita posee una magnífica fachada zoomorfa, característica del estilo Río Bec” Para obtener mayor información sobre el desarrollo cultural en la región, en 2016 adquirimos los datos de escaneo láser aerotransportado (LiDAR) para un área de 200 km² alrededor de los tres sitios mencionados.

Se trata de la tecnología más avanzada de percepción remota, que permite procesar los datos para eliminar la cubierta vegetal y obtener el relieve exacto de la superficie terrestre. Al revisar el área escaneada, la sorpresa fue absoluta: además de observar una gran cantidad de grupos habitacionales de diversos tamaños, nos dimos cuenta de que todo el paisaje estaba profundamente modificado, reflejando las técnicas de manejo del agua y agricultura intensiva. Casi todas las laderas fueron terraceadas, evidentemente para frenar la erosión y retener la humedad en los terrenos cultivados.

Las diversas aguadas fueron todas alteradas, rodeadas por terraplenes que resultaron del amontonamiento del material excavado en sus interiores con el objetivo de aumentar o mantener su profundidad. Incluso en los bajos, que generalmente no son idóneos para la agricultura, notamos que poseen suelos relativamente fértiles a lo largo de sus orillas y también un sinnúmero de canales que sirvieron para drenar y hacer cultivables las porciones de terreno periódicamente inundadas o empantanadas.

Se ha dicho que la tecnología LiDAR ha privado la arqueología de la emoción y sorpresas que conlleva el trabajo de campo. La realidad es que ha facilitado enormemente las prospecciones, pero el trabajo de campo sigue siendo no sólo imprescindible sino también apasionante. Durante los recorridos en el área, en 2017 y 2018, encontramos edificios bien conservados y con elementos decorativos, así como muchos monumentos esculpidos, algunos con inscripciones jeroglíficas, es decir, detalles que no son visibles en los datos LiDAR. Además, sin excavaciones de prueba que realizamos en varios puntos no hubiera sido posible obtener importantes datos cronológicos. Ahora sabemos que toda la zona, hace poco completamente inexplorada, estaba densamente poblada, particularmente durante el Clásico Tardío (ca. 600 – 900 d.C.). Aunque las necesidades de la creciente población impulsaron el desarrollo de sofisticadas técnicas de cultivo y control del agua, estos esfuerzos no impidieron que la región, finalmente, sufriera el mismo destino que las demás sociedades mayas en esta parte de la península. De los pocos grupos humanos que permanecieron en el área a partir del siglo décimo, pequeños y empobrecidos, casi no queda huella, tan sólo algunas ofrendas que ocasionalmente dejaron en los lugares habitados por sus antepasados.

Los resultados debidamente publicados de nuestras investigaciones contribuyeron de manera sustancial a que, en 2014, la parte sur de la Biósfera de Calakmul fuera inscrita en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO como primer bien mixto, natural y cultural, en la República Mexicana. El lector interesado podrá encontrar la historia de los hallazgos más interesantes en el libro que se acaba de publicar (Lost Maya Cities: Archaeological Quests in the Mexican Jungle, Texas A&M University Press, 2020) y que ilustra también los esfuerzos, peligros y decepciones que acompañan las búsquedas arqueológicas en las selvas del sureste mexicano.

A

lthough the southeast of the Mexican state of Campeche is located in the very heart of the territory in which one of the most amazing civilizations in human history flourished, it was precisely there that some of the largest blanks in the archaeological map of the Mayan area were located. Vast regions to the north and south of the relatively well-explored Río Bec area, known for its distinctive architectural style, were a terra incognita. The panorama has changed notably after the archaeological reconnaissance work that we carried out since 1996. In eleven seasons in the field we found more than 80 previously unknown sites; we also located Oxpemul, Balakbal, Pared de los Reyes and Uxul, the first time after being reported by the North American archaeologist Karl Ruppert during the expeditions he led in the 1930s.

The fact that for so long there were hardly any archaeological incursions into these vast regions is undoubtedly due to access difficulties. Most of the territory is within the depopulated Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, covered by tropical jungle. In this karst region, there are no perennial streams of water; the only natural sources of the precious liquid are aguadas, small lakes that fill up in the rainy season but almost all dry up in the rest of the year. Therefore, work in the area requires the use of vehicles, since it is unavoidable to transport not only equipment and food but also considerable amounts of water. When the Reserve was established in 1989, the few roads that had once been used by wood and chicle sap extractors were abandoned and overgrown. To get closer to the archaeological sites, which we had located in the aerial photos or with the help of local informants, we had to reopen them, removing the vegetation with machetes.

“In eleven seasons in the field we found more than 80 previously unknown sites” The slightly undulating landscape is characterized by wetlands –the so-called bajos–, which get bogged down or flooded during the rainy season, becoming practically impassable, so it is only possible to work in the dry season. However, on several occasions the rains precipitated, the bajos were filled with water and, not infrequently, the difficulties in trying to remove the vehicles stuck in the mud seemed insurmountable.

Although a good part of each field season consisted of tasks that had no direct relation to archeology, the impressive and often unexpected finds broke the routine, rewarding us with moments of jubilation and feelings of victory. Apart from many small architectural ensembles, remains of modest settlements, we find several larger centers with imposing buildings and stone monuments decorated in relief, some with hieroglyphic inscriptions that provided important data on the changing political geography of the region. In addition, the results of our explorations have contributed to the understanding of the environmental factors that conditioned the location of the settlements, the relationships with the surrounding areas, as well as the processes of change that Maya societies experienced since the beginning of the first millennium. BC, when the first settlements were established, until the 10th century AD; thereafter, the central and southern parts of the Yucatan peninsula were practically uninhabited, due to the disintegration of the once-powerful states, caused by a combination of various factors, among which overpopulation and climate change with prolonged droughts had a fundamental role.

One of the most exciting discoveries occurred in 2013, when we began prospecting in the northern sector of the Calakmul Biosphere, in the vast, hitherto totally unexplored region. The aerial photos took us to two complexes of monumental architecture, connected by a causeway and composed of various plazas dominated by majestic palaces and pyramidal temples. Among the many monuments were stelae with dates, revealing that the city reached its peak in the late stages of the Classic period (ca. 600 - 900 AD). The inscription on a stela, unique for its glyphs made in stucco and with traces of red paint, mentions its erection in AD 751, appropriately designating the monument as “red stone” or chac tun, the name with which we baptized the site. In 2014 we found Tamchén and Lagunita, two other major sites. The name Tamchén (“deep well”) was inspired by the presence of various chultunes (underground cavities to capture and store rainwater), some with unusual depths of up to 14 meters. This settlement flourished particularly in the Middle Preclassic and Late (ca. 1000 BC - 250 AD), and is one of the earliest architectural complexes in the central part of the peninsula.

Lagunita, on the other hand, reached its peak towards the end of the Classic period (ca. 600 - 900 AD), when a magnificent zoomorphic façade, was built, characteristic of the Río Bec style in the neighboring region to the south. The most splendid examples of the Río Bec architectural style are found in places like Chicanná and Hormiguero.

To obtain more information on the cultural development in the region, in 2016 we acquired airborne laser scan data (LiDAR) for an area of 200 ​​ km2 around the three mentioned sites. It is the most advanced remote sensing technology, allowing data to be processed to remove vegetation cover and obtain the exact relief of the earth’s surface. When reviewing the scanned area, the surprise was absolute: in addition to observing a large number of housing groups of various sizes, we realized that the entire landscape was profoundly modified, reflecting the techniques of water management and intensive agriculture. Almost all the slopes were terraced, evidently to stop erosion and retain moisture in the cultivated land.

The various aguadas were all altered, surrounded by embankments that resulted from the piling up of the excavated material in their interiors with the aim of increasing or maintaining their depth. Even in the lowlands, which are generally not suitable for agriculture, we noted that they have relatively fertile soils along their banks and also countless channels that served to drain and make regularly flooded or bogged portions of land arable.

LiDAR technology has been said to have deprived archeology of the excitement and surprises that fieldwork brings. The reality is that it has greatly facilitated prospecting, but fieldwork remains not only essential but also exciting. During the surveys in the area, in 2017 and 2018, we found well-preserved buildings with decorative elements, as well as many sculpted monuments, some with hieroglyphic inscriptions, that is, details that are not visible in the LiDAR data.

Furthermore, without test excavations we carried out at various points, it would not have been possible to obtain important chronological data.

We now know that the entire area, recently completely unexplored, was densely populated, particularly during the Late Classic (ca. 600 - 900 AD). Although the needs of the growing population prompted the development of sophisticated cultivation and water control techniques, these efforts did not prevent the region from ultimately suffering the same fate as the other Maya societies in this part of the peninsula.

Of the few human groups that remained in the area from the tenth century, small and impoverished, almost no trace remains, only a few offerings that they occasionally left in the places inhabited by their ancestors.

The duly published results of our research contributed substantially to the fact that, in 2014, the southern part of the Calakmul Biosphere was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List as the first mixed natural and cultural property in the Mexican Republic.

The interested reader will be able to find the history of the most interesting finds in the book that has just been published (Lost Maya Cities: Archaeological Quests in the Mexican Jungle, Texas A&M University Press, 2020) and that also illustrates the efforts, dangers, and disappointments that accompany the archaeological searches in the jungles of the Mexican southeast.

Los esfuerzos para su conservación e investigación

L

a Ciudad de los Brujos del Agua como llamaba Román Piña Chan a Chichén Itzá, el lugar en donde Francisco de Montejo, el hijo, conquistador de Yucatán, fundara la Ciudad Real de Chichén Itzá en el siglo XVI, el sitio que por más de cien años ha llamado la atención de los arqueólogos, historiadores, artistas, viajeros, declarada Zona de Monumentos Arqueológicos por el Gobierno de México y Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO en 1988, visitada por cerca de 2‘500,000 personas al año, requiere programas continuos de conservación e investigación.

Durante los últimos meses, a través del Plan de Manejo de la Zona de Monumentos Arqueológicos de Chichén Itzá se han desarrollado dos proyectos vinculados entres si para la conservación e investigación del sitio: El primer proyecto denominado “Proyecto de Conservación Integral de Chichén Itzá” a cargo de la sección de restauración del Centro INAH Yucatán, tiene como objetivo preservar la estructura arquitectónica y sus acabados, mitigar el proceso de pérdida de sus materiales y reducir o eliminar los agentes de deterioro del Juego de Pelota, La Iglesia, y la Subestructura del Templo de los Guerreros.

El segundo proyecto consiste en una investigación del área conocida como Chichén Viejo. Los trabajos de exploración se concentraron en terminar de examinar las zonas que habían quedado pendientes desde años pasados. El conjunto más importante de “Chichén-Viejo” es el llamado Grupo de la Serie Inicial, por contener la fecha que inicia la cuenta maya en Chichén Itzá correspondiente al año 879 d.C. En el mismo grupo se encuentra otro edificio importante, el llamado “Templo de los Falos”, una importante residencia de élite de la antigua Chichén Itzá denominado así por contener elementos fálicos empotrados en el interior de los cuartos. Así mismo, este proyecto de investigación de Chichén Viejo logró consolidar tres estructuras del conjunto de Serie Inicial: la Galería-Patio de la Luna; un altar ubicado al centro de la Plaza Sur; y el interior y la fachada Este de la Casa de los Caracoles que forma parte del Palacio de los Falos.

Los proyectos de conservación e investigación arqueológica desarrollados por investigadores del Centro INAH Yucatán en la Zona de Monumentos Arqueológicos de Chichén Itzá, representan un gran avance para lograr la preservación del patrimonio cultural pero sobre todo su puesta en valor. Gracias a las acciones planificadas y concertadas fue posible desarrollar estos proyectos que por años se habían planteado. Si bien es el principio, la línea a seguir es clara.

LA IGLESIA

Las dimensiones del llamado Juego de Pelota son notables, 140m de largo por 40m de ancho, esto lo sitúa en el más grande localizado hasta la fecha en todo México. El detalle sobresaliente de la estructura son los seis paneles de relieves ubicados en las banquetas este y oeste. En ellos se ve a dos grupos guiados por sus dirigentes, uno de ellos sostiene la cabeza decapitada del dirigente del otro grupo, mientras que del cuello de este brotan chorros de sangre en forma de serpiente. Estas seis representaciones de sacrificio son formidables, sin embargo, al estar expuestos a la intemperie poco a poco se empezaron a deteriorar por los microorganismos afectándolos considerablemente e impidiendo su apreciación; la intervención de este elemento consistió en una limpieza profunda, el desvío de las bajadas de agua y la aplicación de una capa de sacrificio que soporte y reciba las inclemencias del ambiente.

Este espacio se encuentra al interior del Templo de los Guerreros, contiene elementos que aún conservan restos de pintura mural, como una serie de columnas grabadas con guerreros de un estilo del centro de México, las cuales aún preservan la policromía original.

Estas columnas son un ejemplo de la apariencia del sitio en su momento de esplendor. Después de su excavación entre 1920 -1930 las columnas quedaron a la inclemencia de la humedad y por consiguiente del afloramiento de sales que degradan la superficie pictórica y su base. El proyecto de conservación se enfocó en revertir estos procesos de deterioro, desalinizando las superficies pictóricas, para después consolidarlas y con ello estabilizar las columnas.

La Iglesia se ubica al sur del sitio, en un conjunto compuesto por el Observatorio y Las Monjas. Es uno de los edificios más icónicos de Chichén ya que ejemplifica el estilo Puuc, desarrollado en la Península de Yucatán entre los años 600 a 900 d.C., y anterior al apogeo de Chichén Itzá que ocurrió entre el año 900 al 1200 dC., con atributos de una arquitectura híbrida entre lo maya y los estilos del centro de México. Los mascarones en las esquinas, las esculturas de dioses y una intrincada representación de formas geométricas son características del estilo Puuc. Estos elementos los tenemos presentes en La Iglesia, por lo que su conservación fue fundamental siendo la estructura más completa de la zona arqueológica. La intervención consistió principalmente en una limpieza profunda de todo el edificio y la consolidación de los acabados.

he City of the Water Witches, as Román Piña Chan called Chichén Itzá, the place where Francisco de Montejo, the son, conqueror of Yucatán, founded the Royal City of Chichén Itzá in the 16th century, the site that for more than one hundred years has called the attention of archaeologists, historians, artists, travelers; Declared a Zone of Archaeological Monuments by the Government of Mexico and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, visited by about 2,500,000 people a year, it requires continuous conservation and research programs.

In recent months, through the Chichén Itzá Archaeological Monuments Zone Management Plan, two interlinked projects have been developed for the conservation and research of the site: The first project called “Chichén Itzá Comprehensive Conservation Project”, in charge of the restoration section of the INAH Yucatán Center aims to preserve the architectural structure and its finishes, mitigate the process of loss of its materials, and reduce or eliminate the agents of deterioration of the Ball Court, The Church and the Substructure of the Temple of the Warriors.

The second project consists of an investigation of the area known as Chichén Viejo. The exploration work focused on completing the examination of the areas that had been pending for the past years. The most important set of “Chichén-Viejo” is the so-called Group of the Initial Series because it contains the date that begins the Mayan account in Chichén Itzá corresponding to the year 879 AD. In the same group, there is another important building, the so-called “Temple of the Falos”, an important elite residence of the ancient Chichén Itzá named for containing phallic elements embedded inside the rooms.

Likewise, this Chichén Viejo research project managed to consolidate three structures from the Initial Series set: the Galería-Patio de la Luna; an altar located in the center of the South Plaza; and the interior and east façade of the Casa de los Caracoles, which is part of the Palacio de los Falos.

THE GREAT BALL COURT

The dimensions of the so-called Ball Court are remarkable, 140 m long by 40 m wide, this places it in the largest located to date in all of Mexico. The outstanding detail of the structure are the six relief panels located on the east and west sidewalks. In them, you can see two groups led by their leaders, one of them holds the decapitated head of the leader of the other group, while jets of blood in the form of a snake flow from his neck. These six representations of sacrifice are formidable, however, when exposed to the elements, little by little they began to deteriorate by the microorganisms, affecting them considerably and preventing their appreciation; the intervention of this element consisted of deep cleaning, the diversion of the downspouts and the application of a sacrificial layer that supports and receives the inclement weather.

This space is located inside the Temple of the Warriors, it contains elements that still conserve remains of mural painting, such as a series of columns engraved with warriors in a style from central Mexico, which still preserves the original polychrome. These columns are an example of how the site looked in its prime. After being excavated between 1920 -1930, the columns were left to the inclement humidity and consequently the outcrop of salts that degrade the pictorial surface and its base. The conservation project focused on reversing these deterioration processes, desalinating the pictorial surfaces, to later consolidate them and thereby stabilize the columns.

The Church is located to the south of the site, in a complex made up of the Observatory and Las Monjas. It is one of the most iconic buildings in Chichén since it exemplifies the Puuc style, developed in the Yucatán Peninsula between 600 to 900 AD., And prior to the heyday of Chichén Itzá that occurred between 900 to 1200 AD., With attributes of a hybrid architecture between the Mayan and styles from central Mexico. The masks in the corners, the sculptures of gods, and intricate representation of geometric shapes are characteristic of the Puuc style. These elements are present in the Church, so its conservation was fundamental, being the most complete structure of the archaeological zone. The intervention consisted mainly of deep cleaning of the entire building and the consolidation of the finishes.

La huella de los piratas del caribe

L

os atracos y robos por parte de piratas que sufrió la Península de Yucatán desde mediados del siglo XVI y muy particularmente durante los siglos XVII y XVIII, obligaron al gobierno colonial a tomar medidas para proteger a sus embarcaciones, sus ciudades y sus habitantes. Entre estas poblaciones, la de San Francisco de Campeche destacaba por su riqueza y estratégica ubicación en la costa del Golfo de México, por lo que frecuentemente era objeto de cruentos ataques por parte de los filibusteros que asolaban la región. En aquellos años, algunos de los habitantes de Campeche corrían a refugiarse al convento de San Francisco, que pronto resultó insuficiente para dar cabida a todos, por lo que algunos ciudadanos y autoridades avecindados en la zona solicitaron apoyo de la Corona Española para financiar un proyecto defensivo.

El primer intento por proteger la ciudad de los ataques piratas, fue una iniciativa del mariscal Carlos de Luna y Arellano, entonces Gobernador de la Provincia de Yucatán, quien ordenó construir los tres primeros fuertes de la ciudad: el de San Benito, el de San Bartolomé y el llamado del Bonete, que pronto resultaron insuficientes para proteger una ciudad en constante crecimiento.

Los ciudadanos reunieron algunos fondos, que completó el gobierno virreinal, para iniciar en 1685, la construcción de una primera muralla, a cargo del Ing. Martín de la Torre, quien propuso un proyecto defensivo con un presupuesto de 40 mil pesos, que incluía cinco puertas: las de Mar y Tierra, la del barrio de San Francisco, la del barrio de San Román, y una última en el Muelle, muy cerca de la Puerta de Mar. La estructura la culmina el ingeniero austriaco Jaime Frank, quien modificó el proyecto original y realizó grandes avances, concluyendo hacia 1710. El recinto amurallado tiene la forma de un polígono irregular de ocho caras, diseñado para tener dos frentes hacia el mar y seis en tierra firme. En cada uno de sus vértices se construyó un baluarte defensivo: en el norte, el de Santiago; en el sur, los de Santa Rosa y San Juan; en el oriente, los de San José, San Pedro y San Francisco; y en el poniente, los de Soledad y San Carlos. Todos los baluartes contaban con sus respectivos cañones, y una explanada con rampa para facilitar el acceso de las tropas a la parte superior; también había espacios para el resguardo de alimentos y artillería.

La obra tenía 2.536 kms. de largo, y estaba dotada de un camino de ronda o adarve, que permitía caminar sobre ella, para vigilar el exterior del recinto.

Baluarte de Santa Rosa

Baluarte de Santa Rosa. Es el más antiguo de los ocho baluartes, y fue dedicado a Santa Rosa de Lima, por lo que su nombre fue grabado en el dintel de la puerta, junto con un monograma de la Virgen María. Cuenta con tres galerías interiores y un aljibe al centro, además de una rampa para llegar al nivel superior. Al ser abandonado a finales del siglo XIX, fue convertido en vecindad, pero posteriormente fue restaurado y convertido en pinacoteca y museo.

Se ubica en el norte del Centro Histórico, siendo el último en ser concluido, en 1704; fue uno de los espacios defensivos que más activamente protegieron a la ciudad mientras estuvo en uso, pero fue demolido a principios del siglo XX. En los años cincuenta fue reconstruido, aunque esta obra no se apegó al diseño original, del que sólo se conserva su puerta de acceso. Actualmente alberga al Jardín Botánico X’much Haltún.

Baluarte de San Juan. Fue el cuarto baluarte

Fue dedicado a San Juan de Dios, fundador de la orden de los Juaninos, por ser los religiosos dedicados a la curación de los navegantes. Tiene un diseño muy similar al de Santa Rosa, pero debido a que fue convertido en vivienda, sufrió grandes deterioros.

Baluarte de San Pedro. Comenzó a construirse

Es uno de los baluartes más importantes de la ciudad, pues ahí se estableció el Tribunal de la Santa Inquisición y, posteriormente en 1824, fue escenario de los enfrentamientos entre las tropas pro independencia de Yucatán y las encabezadas por Antonio López de Santa Anna; posteriormente fue utilizado como prisión, y ya en la segunda mitad del siglo XX fue habilitado como museo de artesanías y centro de información turística. Actualmente se encuentra bajo resguardo del INAH.

Bastion of San Pedro.

En 1889 se demolió parte de su estructura para permitir el paso del tranvía, pero en el siglo XX se restituyó su forma original; un sector del edificio fue destinado durante un tiempo a la biblioteca “Gustavo Martínez Alomía”, y posteriormente a una pequeña exhibición museográfica sobre la piratería.

Baluarte de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.

Es el baluarte más grande de los ocho del sistema defensivo; fue construido a finales del siglo XVII para la defensa y protección de la Puerta de Mar, y dedicada a la Virgen de la Soledad, patrona de los marinos.

Consta de cinco galerías y un portal, así como una rampa con tres arcos debajo. Junto al baluarte se extiende el lienzo de la muralla, con un paso de ronda y atalayas. Cuando dejó de funcionar como lugar de defensa, se empleó como aduana marítima, bodega y, en los años veinte del siglo XX, como vecindad. En 1958 fue rescatado y convertido en Museo de las Estelas; actualmente alberga el Museo de Arquitectura Maya, a cargo del INAH.

Bastion of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.

E

n contadas ocasiones tenemos la oportunidad de conocer y convivir con una persona excepcional, de amplia inteligencia y cuyas cualidades contribuyeron a aportarnos variados conocimientos, tanto en el área de la antropología como de la vida misma. Con Luis Leira compartimos su carismática calidad humana y humor en paralelo con las investigaciones arqueológicas, difusión y actividades en nuestro centro de adscripción, El Centro INAH, Quintana Roo. Nuestro objetivo no es presentar en forma breve su obra como investigador del instituto en el Estado de Quintana Roo. En esta semblanza será importante exponer algunas de las producciones de Luis Joaquín Leira Guillermo a partir de su inicial arribo a la Costa Oriental de la Península de Yucatán.

En tres temporadas de campo, realizadas de 1979 a 1981 y dentro del Proyecto Arqueológico Xel Ha, Luis lleva a cabo la exploración y restauración arquitectónica de la estructura conocida como “Los Pájaros”, esto por la situación de una escena de unas aves pintadas en el muro norte de un templo y con tan buen acierto que decide retirar el escombro contiguo que cubría el mismo muro en su sector sur, revelando un magnífico mural polícromo dividido en tres motivos, siendo uno de ellos la representación del semblante de un personaje teotihuacano y fechado para el período clásico temprano (250-600 d.C.).

Durante el Proyecto de Salvamento Arqueológico Punta Piedra (1981- 1985) situado entre una extensa área selvática y colindando entre Xcaret y Playa del Carmen, Luis realizaba trabajos de rescate y es en este escenario donde emprende recorridos de superficie, levantamientos planimétricos, excavaciones de unidades habitacionales prehispánicas y exploraciones en contextos subterráneos como cuevas y cenotes.

Nuestro colega, de igual manera participa en proyectos de salvamento arqueológico en el sur del estado, así lo evidencian las prospecciones de superficie que efectúa para una línea de alta tensión con la Comisión Federal de Electricidad en Xul Ha y las excavaciones de salvamento arqueológico en una unidad habitacional en Calderitas, en cuyas exploraciones se logran hallazgos de consideración como las características constructivas de las edificaciones habitacionales del período protoclásico (100-250 d.C.), etapa cronológica escasamente comprendida.

Luis nos dejó constancia de información relevante sobre variados asentamientos prehispánicos por él estudiados, de ellos habrá que referir sus incursiones de campo en: Kantunilkín, Naranjal, Boca Iglesia, Hacienda Mundaca, Rancho Viejo, El Meco, El Rey, Yamil Lu´um, Koxol, Xcalacoco, Xaman Ha, Castillo Real, Paamul, Xa´ac, Xpuha, Acumal, Tankah, Tulum, Cobá, y Muyil.

De consideración, será el referir el constante interés que Luis mantenía con dos importantes enclaves arqueológicos y en los cuales empleó varias temporadas de campo para proceder con las exploraciones y restauración arquitectónica. Leira logró conectar a Tulum y El Meco. De este último sitio es obligatorio enunciar el hallazgo de un elemento mobiliario particularmente valioso ya que expone el acontecimiento del sacrificio humano. Este elemento consiste en una piedra trapezoidal que funcionó como piedra de sacrificio (Techcatl en náhuatl - Chamilbiltun en maya) que se recuperó en la Estructura Seis y que en una de sus portadas modelaron sobre una capa de estuco la imagen expuesta de Cha´ac como deidad de la lluvia, pero también con atributos de Tláloc, como deidad de la lluvia del Centro de México.

Luis participó en los proyectos anuales de mantenimiento general de las zonas arqueológicas abiertas al público y en la restauración arquitectónica de los entornos circundantes. De igual manera, formó parte del Programa de Empleo Temporal (PET) cuyo objetivo era el de generar oportunidades de ingreso económico en el medio rural en varios municipios del estado, Luis consideró como oportuno y apropiado contratar también a personal femenino dentro de sus proyectos en la península, algo inusitado para la época.

Nuestro entrañable Luis impartió diversos cursos sobre arqueología mesoamericana y nociones generales de la civilización maya en la capacitación y formación de los grupos de guías turísticos del Estado de Quintana Roo, de igual manera, nos incitó a incursionar en los conocimientos arqueológicos a través de la iconografía, la religión y la astronomía maya la cual manejaba con mucha capacidad y conocimiento. Otra de sus acciones en pro de fomentar la cultura general eran sus clases de historia greco-romana, egipcia, china y sudamericana.

Los continuos desarrollos turísticos e inmobiliarios constituyen un particular efecto adverso al entorno selvático y con ello incrementa nuestra preocupación por los elementos muebles e inmuebles de carácter arqueológico e histórico que pudiesen ser afectados por el paso de la maquinaria pesada y sus respectivos trabajos de ingeniería. Para prevenir esto, Luis efectuaba recorridos de superficie en terrenos estratégicos, registrando las edificaciones arqueológicas y explorando los entornos subterráneos como cuevas y cenotes. Es necesario considerar el apoyo, siempre apreciable, del grupo de exploradores que lo acompañaban, residentes del poblado de Nuevo Xcan.

Al recordar la sensible pérdida de Luis y al repasar a grandes rasgos su trayectoria, quizás el mejor homenaje que podemos brindarle será el de reflexionar en su contribución a la disciplina antropológica, a la cual dedicó su vida y fue uno de sus impulsores.

Esta escueta presentación a su obra es una reseña reveladora de las experiencias que tuvo como investigadores del INAH, regalándonos una bella amistad.

Luis Joaquín Leira Guillermo y Enrique Terrones (su valedor)

O

n rare occasions, we have the opportunity to meet and live with an exceptional person, with broad intelligence and whose qualities contributed to providing us with varied knowledge, both in the area of ​​anthropology and in life itself.

With Luis Leira we share his charismatic human quality and humor in parallel with the archaeological investigations, dissemination, and activities in our affiliation center, El Centro INAH, Quintana Roo. Our objective is not to briefly present his work as a researcher at the institute in the State of Quintana Roo. In this sketch, it will be important to expose some of the production of Luis Joaquín Leira Guillermo from his initial arrival on the Eastern Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

In three field seasons, carried out from 1979 to 1981 and within the Xel Ha Archaeological Project, Luis carried out the exploration and architectural restoration of the structure known as “Los Pájaros”, this due to the situation of a scene of some birds painted in the north wall of a temple and with such success that he decides to remove the adjoining rubble that covered the same wall in its southern sector, revealing a magnificent polychrome mural divided into three motifs, one of them being the representation of the countenance of a Teotihuacan character and dated to the early classical period (250-600 AD).

During the Punta Piedra Archaeological Salvage Project (1981-1985) located between an extensive jungle area and bordering between Xcaret and Playa del Carmen, Luis carried out rescue work and it is in this scenario that he undertakes surface tours, planimetric surveys, excavations of units pre-Hispanic dwellings and explorations in underground contexts such as caves and cenotes.

Our colleague also participates in archaeological salvage projects in the south of the state, as evidenced by the surface surveys he carries out for a high voltage line with the Federal Electricity Commission in Xul Ha and the archaeological salvage excavations in a housing unit in Calderitas, in whose explorations significant findings such as the constructive characteristics of the housing buildings of the Proto-Classic period (100-250 AD), a chronological stage poorly understood, are achieved.

Luis left us evidence of relevant information on various pre-Hispanic settlements studied by him, of which it will be necessary to refer his field incursions in: Cantunilkín, Naranjal, Boca Iglesia, Hacienda Mundaca, Rancho Viejo, El Meco, El Rey, Yamil Lu´um, Koxol, Xcalacoco, Xaman Ha, Castillo Real, Paamul, Xa´ac, Xpuha, Acumal, Tankah, Tulum, Cobá, and Muyil.

It will be worth mentioning the constant interest that Luis had with two important archaeological sites and in which he used several field seasons to proceed with the explorations and architectural restoration. Leira managed to connect Tulum and El Meco. From this last site it is obligatory to state the finding of a particularly valuable movable element since it exposes the event of human sacrifice. This element consists of a trapezoidal stone that functioned as a sacrificial stone (Techcatl in Nahuatl -chamilbiltun in Mayan) that was recovered in Structure Six and that on one of its facades, the exposed image of Cha’ac was modeled on a layer of stucco as a rain deity, but also with attributes of Tlaloc, as a rain deity from Central Mexico.

Luis participated in the annual general maintenance projects of archaeological zones open to the public and in the architectural restoration of the surrounding environments. Similarly, he was part of the Temporary Employment Program (PET) whose objective was to generate economic income opportunities in rural areas in several municipalities of the state, Luis considered it opportune and appropriate to also hire female personnel within his projects in the peninsula, something unusual for the time.

The continuous tourist and real estate developments constitute a particularly adverse effect on the jungle environment and with it increases our concern for movable and immovable elements of an archaeological and historical nature that could be affected by the passage of heavy machinery and their respective engineering work. To prevent this, Luis made surface tours of strategic terrain, registering archaeological buildings and exploring underground environments such as caves and cenotes. It is necessary to consider the support, always appreciable, of the group of explorers who accompanied him, residents of the town of Nuevo Xcan.

Our beloved Luis gave various courses on Mesoamerican archeology and general notions of the Mayan civilization in the training and formation of groups of tourist guides of the State of Quintana Roo, in the same way, he encouraged us to venture into archaeological knowledge through iconography, Mayan religion, and astronomy which he handled with great ability and knowledge. Another of his actions in favor of promoting general culture was his classes in Greco-Roman, Egyptian, Chinese, and South American history.

When recalling the sensitive loss of Luis and reviewing his career in broad strokes, perhaps the best tribute we can offer him will be to reflect on his contribution to the anthropological discipline, to which he dedicated his life and was one of its promoters.

This brief presentation of his work is a revealing review of the experiences he had as INAH researchers, giving us a beautiful friendship.

Un policultivo del futuro ancestral

L

a milpa es un sistema tradicional de policultivo que tiene su origen en Mesoamérica; consiste en la asociación simultánea de maíz (Zea mays L.), calabaza (Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber, C. ficifolia Bouché, C. moschata Duchesne ex Poir o C. pepo L.) y diversas leguminosas (Phaseolus vulgaris L., P. lunatus L., Vicia faba L. o Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.), cultivos que en esta parte del mundo se conocen como las tres hermanas. Aunque existen regiones en México y Centroamérica donde la palabra milpa se refiere a cualquier terreno dedicado al cultivo del maíz, en el presente artículo, milpa se refiere únicamente al mencionado policultivo.

En el caso de la milpa se trata de un policultivo mixto donde varios cultivos crecen simultáneamente sin un arreglo por surcos. La milpa es además un policultivo suplementario, donde se reduce la densidad de siembra del cultivo principal (en el caso de la milpa, el maíz) para dejar espacio para uno o varios cultivos asociados. Según el clima, el suelo, la vegetación, las costumbres alimenticias de la región y los intereses y destrezas del productor, la milpa puede incluir un sinfín de plantas (anuales y perennes) adicionales. Pueden llegar a encontrarse hasta 50 especies diferentes ya sea cultivadas, auspiciadas o toleradas. Frecuentemente, un maíz nativo con un ciclo de producción corto es intercalado con otro de un ciclo mayor. Los agricultores, muchos de ellos en subsistencia, mantienen esta diversidad inter e intraespecífica como estrategia para enfrentar futuros cambios ambientales y necesidades económicas actuales.

En la milpa se detectan ambos fenómenos, pero predomina la complementariedad de nicho causada por las diferencias arquitectónicas de las raíces entre maíz, frijol y calabaza, que resulta en una eficiente absorción de nutrientes. Aparte, el frijol es una planta fijadora de nitrógeno atmosférico que aporta este nutriente a los demás cultivos. En cambio, la caña de maíz proporciona sostén al frijol. La calabaza sembrada entre el maíz y el frijol cubre ampliamente el suelo y consecuentemente limita el desarrollo de arvenses y ayuda a mantener la humedad del suelo.

Sin embargo, desde la segunda parte del siglo XX, en México, las políticas gubernamentales promovieron el monocultivo y la utilización de estrategias como la mecanización, el mejoramiento de variedades y el desarrollo de agroquímicos para la fertilización y el control de plagas y arvenses. Desde entonces, la agricultura quedó al servicio de la industrialización. Aun así, este sistema de producción presenta también desventajas por las cuales cada vez menos jóvenes optan por dedicarse a la milpa: una alta demanda de mano de obra, poco potencial de mecanización, falta de expertos en el área; una contracorriente social, política y económica; una difícil aplicación de métodos estadísticos convencionales para evaluar experimentos biodiversos.

La interacción de maíz, leguminosas y calabaza genera un aumento de la producción por planta de maíz en comparación con su monocultivo. Gliessman en 1985 demostró que 1.73 hectáreas de maíz en monocultivo producen tanto alimento como 1 hectárea de milpa. La sobrecosecha en un policultivo como la milpa se debe a (1) efectos de selección donde prospera el cultivo dominante gracias a aportaciones de los demás o a (2) complementariedad de nicho donde las diversas plantas aprovechan nichos diferentes.

Adicionalmente, las presiones socioeconómicas y ambientales que enfrentan muchos milperos han ocasionado la reducción del período de barbecho, haciendo menos productivo y sustentable este sistema. Otra amenaza para la milpa es el cambio climático. Para Mesoamérica, se espera para la mitad del siglo XXI que la producción de maíz disminuirá al menos en un 10%.

Como se ha evidenciado en múltiples experimentos realizados por Stephen Gliessman y Roland Ebel, en la milpa, cada planta de maíz produce un aproximado de 68.3 g, 1.2 veces superior al rendimiento por planta en monocultivo. Cada planta de frijol produjo 27.5 g, lo que corresponde a su rendimiento en el monocultivo. Todas las demás combinaciones de cultivos (maíz - calabaza, frijol calabaza y maíz frijol - calabaza) superaron también los respectivos monocultivos en cuanto a su rendimiento total, lo que subraya el potencial productivo de los sistemas de producción diversificados.

A pesar de las múltiples fortalezas de los policultivos, la magnitud del cambio climático reta a los agricultores tradicionales y ponen en peligro la capacidad de resiliencia y adaptación de la milpa. Es probable que aplicando de forma tradicional la cosecha de la milpa, los agricultores no sean capaces de enfrentar los retos que el siglo XXI propone, por tanto se requiere de una revitalización a través de la investigación. Aprovechando la agrobiodiversidad y baja dependencia de insumos externos de la milpa, proponemos, pues, desarrollar agroecosistemas basados en la agricultura tradicional, adaptados a las condiciones climáticas y edáficas de un determinado lugar, pero enriquecidos por técnicas contemporáneas del manejo sostenible.

he milpa is a traditional polyculture system that has its origin in Mesoamerica; It consists of the simultaneous association of corn (Zea mays L.), squash (Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber, C. f icifolia BouchĂŠ, C. moschata Duchesne ex Poir or C. pepo L.) and various legumes (Phaseolus vulgaris L., P. lunatus L., Vicia faba L. or Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.), crops known in this part of the world as the three sisters. Although there are regions in Mexico and Central America where the word milpa refers to any land dedicated to the cultivation of corn, in this article, milpa refers only to the aforementioned polyculture.

In the case of the milpa, it is a mixed polyculture where several crops grow simultaneously without a row arrangement. The milpa is also a supplementary polyculture, where the sowing density of the main crop (in the case of the milpa, corn) is reduced to make room for one or more associated crops. Depending on the climate, soil, vegetation, food habits of the region, and the interests and skills of the producer, the milpa can include a myriad of additional plants (annuals and perennials). Up to 50 different species can be found, whether cultivated, sponsored or tolerated.

Frequently, a native maize with a short production cycle is intercropped with another with a longer cycle. Farmers, many of them in subsistence, maintain this inter- and intraspecific diversity as a strategy to face future environmental changes and current economic needs.

In the milpa, both phenomena are detected but the niche complementarity prevails caused by the architectural differences of the roots between corn, beans and squash, which results in an efficient absorption of food. Besides, beans are an atmospheric nitrogen fixing plant that contributes this nutrient to other crops. Instead, the corn stalk provides support for the beans. Squash planted between corn and beans covers the soil widely limiting the development of weeds and helps maintain soil moisture.

The interaction of corn, legumes and squash generates an increase in the production per corn plant compared to its monoculture. Gliessman in 1985 showed that 1.73 hectares of corn in monoculture produce as much food as 1 hectare of cornfields. Overharvesting in a polyculture such as the milpa is due to (1) selection effects where the dominant crop thrives thanks to contributions from others or (2) niche complementarities where the various plants take advantage of different niches.

However, since the second part of the 20th century, in Mexico, government policies promoted monoculture and the use of strategies such as mechanization, variety improvement, and the development of agrochemicals for fertilization and control of pests and weeds. Since then, agriculture has been at the service of industrialization.

Even so, this production system also has disadvantages for which fewer and fewer young people choose to dedicate themselves to the milpa: a high demand for labor, little potential for mechanization, lack of experts in the area; a social, political and economic countercurrent; a difficult application of conventional statistical methods to evaluate biodiverse experiments. Additionally, the socio-economic and environmental pressures faced by many milperos have caused the fallow period to be reduced, making this system less productive and sustainable. Another threat to the milpa is climate change. For Mesoamerica, it is expected by the middle of the 21st century that corn production will decrease by at least 10%.

As has been evidenced in multiple experiments carried out by Stephen Gliessman and Roland Ebel, in the milpa, each corn plant produces an approximate of 68.3 g, 1.2 times higher than the yield per plant in monoculture. Each bean plant produced 27.5 g, which corresponds to its yield in the monoculture.

All other crop combinations (corn-squash, squash beans, and corn-beans-squash) also outperformed the respective monocultures in terms of their total yield, underscoring the productive potential of diversified production systems.

Despite the multiple strengths of polycultures, the magnitude of climate change challenges traditional farmers and jeopardizes capacityof resilience and adaptation of the milpa. It is probable that applying the cornfield harvest in a traditional way, farmers will not be able to face the challenges that the 21st century proposes, therefore a revitalization through research is required. Taking advantage of agrobiodiversity and low dependence on external inputs from the milpa, we therefore propose to develop agroecosystems based on traditional agriculture, adapted to the climatic and edaphic conditions of a given place, but enriched by contemporary techniques of sustainable management.

Presente, pasado y futuro

COZUMEL PREHISPÁNICO

L

as investigaciones más recientes indican que los primeros pobladores de la isla de Cozumel arribaron a ella alrededor del siglo II a.C. Aunque no identificados plenamente, se cree que estos individuos eran parte de grupos seminómadas caribes, dedicados indistintamente a la pesca y la cacería.

Una segunda ola migratoria más organizada arribó en el siglo III d.C. Ésta se conformaba por grupos mayas identificados como procedentes de la región del Petén guatemalteco, al sur de la Península de Yucatán, con un nivel cultural definitivamente superior a sus antecesores, eran sedentarios, conocían la agricultura y dominaban técnicas arquitectónicas, así mismo se encuentran vestigios de su actividad en algunas construcciones y restos de alfarería hallados en el centro norte de la isla, en la zona conocida actualmente como Santa Rita y parte de San Gervasio.

La tercera oleada migratoria, en las postrimerías del clásico maya, inició su arribo en el siglo VIII y llegó procedente de Tabasco y del sur de Campeche. La formaban grupos mayas-chontales de la rama putún, navegantes y comerciantes que en su ruta llegaban hasta Centroamérica y que hicieron de Cozumel un punto importante de su área de influencia. Este grupo introdujo a la isla nuevas formas de organización social, otros estilos arquitectónicos y nuevos cultos religiosos, entre los que destacó la devoción a la diosa Ix Chel, deidad de la luna, fertilidad y nacimiento, y que en la isla tuvo su principal santuario, dando origen a un rito de peregrinación de todo el mundo maya hacia Cozumel. El Chilam Balam de Chumayel recuerda la dispersión maya por el rumbo del Caribe:

...”Cuando se multiplicó la muchedumbre de los hijos de la Tierra, fue el centro Cuzamil, la flor de la Tierra, la jícara de la Tierra, el primer árbol de la Tierra, el corazón de la Tierra”...

El mejor testimonio de alto nivel cultural y de organización social que alcanzó este grupo lo constituyen los numerosos vestigios arqueológicos que existen en toda la superficie de la isla. Para 1200, en Centroamérica prevalecía el comercio con tierras lejanas, cuyo enlace principal era Cozumel. Fue en esta isla donde toda clase de mercancía llegó de lugares lejanos. Los artículos se almacenaban en canoas antes de enviarse a otros puntos de distribución.

LA CONQUISTA El 3 de mayo de 1518 el capitán español Juan de Grijalva, fue el primer español en desembarcar en la isla que llamó de la “Santa Cruz de la Puerta Latina”, fue en ese viaje cuando días más tarde se ofició en playas de Cozumel la primera misa cristiana en territorio mexicano. Un año más tarde en febrero de 1519, Hernán Cortés inicia la conquista de México desembarcando en Cozumel, donde incorporó a sus fuerzas al náufrago Gerónimo de Aguilar, quien fue uno de los primeros intérpretes al servicio del conquistador. Otro náufrago Gonzalo Guerrero se negó a retornar, después de ocho años se había adaptado a las costumbres indígenas e incluso se había casado con una dama principal y tenía tres hijos, de aquí que se le considere el padre del mestizaje en México.

Durante la estancia de Cortés en la isla, se presentó ante él una persona que se dijo señor de toda la isla.

Tras una larga charla, Cortés le habló sobre el rey de España y la fe católica, además de recalcar sus intenciones pacíficas. Aquel halach uinik aceptó las condiciones y mandó llamar a otros batabob de la isla.

Unos días después todos los pueblos volvían a su vida habitual, abandonando aparentemente el culto a sus dioses y adorando a la cruz cristiana y a una imagen de la Virgen que Cortés les instaló. Antes de partir y por consejo de Jerónimo de Aguilar, el halach uinik de Cozumel pidió a Cortés una carta o salvoconducto que describiera que la población no fuese agredida por futuras expediciones españolas a la isla, la cual fue otorgada. El 4 de marzo de 1519 los conquistadores españoles zarparon de Cozumel despidiéndose amigablemente de los mayas de la isla.

Hacia 1525 Francisco de Montejo hizo una solicitud al rey de España para que autorizara la conquista y desarrollo de la isla de Cozumel (Montejo era uno de los capitanes que llegara con Cortés nueve años antes). Francisco de Montejo llegó a Cozumel el 29 de septiembre de 1527 y le dio el nombre cristiano de San Miguel de Xamancab. Cuando los españoles se familiarizaron con la costa del Golfo de México, se dieron cuenta de que no tenían que parar en la isla, excluyéndola como puerto de arribo para los barcos españoles. Al mismo tiempo, como efecto inmediato de la conquista, el intercambio maya fue nulificado y se suprimió el culto a la diosa Ix Chel. Los isleños, sin contar más con su principal actividad económica, se vieron forzados a depender solo de la agricultura para su supervivencia.

Durante la colonia la isla quedó prácticamente deshabitada, pues se conjugaron varios factores que limitaron la permanencia y crecimiento del grupo indígena: el azote causado por las enfermedades traídas por los españoles, la explotación a que fueron sometidos, el derrumbe de su sistema económico, su organización social e incluso el colapso de su religión y costumbres.

Ante el abandono, la isla fue frecuentemente refugio de piratas y corsarios que tenían al Caribe como centro de operaciones. No tuvieron una base permanente en la isla, pero ocasionalmente recalaban en ella para abastecerse de agua, alimentos frescos y reparar sus navíos. Entre estos ladrones del mar en 1571, después del combate entre fuerzas españolas y corsarios franceses, 10 corsarios murieron (incluyendo el jefe, Pierre Chuetot) y 10 cayeron prisioneros en la isla, trasladados a Mérida primero y después a México, fueron juzgados, condenados y ajusticiados por el tribunal de la Santa Inquisición.

REPOBLAMIENTO, SIGLO XIX Y XX

A mediados del siglo XIX, como consecuencia de la rebelión indígena en la península, conocida como Guerra de Castas (1847), se inicia un proceso de repoblamiento con el arribo de familias procedentes casi todas de Valladolid, Sabán Tihosuco y Chemax, del estado de Yucatán y fundan los poblados de” El Cedral” (antiguamente Oy ib), al sur de la isla y “San Miguel” en la costa noroeste. En el principio, fue el negocio del contrabando. Más tarde, la explotación de frutas, henequén, chicle y copra logró consolidar esos poblados, que para fines de siglo XIX contaban cada uno con aduana, escuela y guarnición (gobierno municipal, solo la segunda, o sea San Miguel).

La depresión de los años 30 afectó seriamente a la isla en su economía, pero tuvo un fuerte resurgimiento durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, poniendo nuevamente a Cozumel en el mapa. Los Estados Unidos construyeron una base aérea para aviones de caza de barcos acorazados en medio del Atlántico y se construyó un aeropuerto.

Atraídos por las aguas cristalinas, los hombres rana venían a entrenar y regresaban a casa con historias de las magníficas vistas submarinas. Jacques Cousteau dio a conocer en 1960 sobre la riqueza de los arrecifes de coral que rodean la isla, lo que hizo que los entusiastas por lo submarino se enteraran de la existencia de Cozumel.

Para 1970, la población de Cozumel creció rápidamente a 10,000 habitantes y hoy en día la isla cuenta con una población de casi 100 000 habitantes.

FIESTAS TRADICIONALES LA FERIA DEL CEDRAL Las Fiestas de la Santa Cruz y Feria del Cedral, es una tradición que data del año 1848. Es una de las celebraciones más antiguas de la Península de Yucatán y se lleva a cabo en el pequeño poblado de El Cedral, en el sur de la isla de Cozumel.

El Cedral es celebrado típicamente del 29 de abril al 3 de mayo para conmemorar el día de la Santa Cruz. Durante la “Guerra de Castas” en 1848, los habitantes de Sabán, un pueblo pequeño en tierra firme en la Península de Yucatán, México, fueron expulsados por los nativos que atacaron a la población y masacraron a parte de sus habitantes. Casimiro Cárdenas, uno de los sobrevivientes, llevaba una cruz de madera, cuando despertó, creyendo que era la cruz lo que había salvado su vida. Una vez resguardado en Cozumel, Casimiro Cárdenas y otros refugiados hicieron el juramento de honorar a la Santa Cruz.

Pactaron que, si se salvaban del tormento y la enfermedad, celebrarían la gracia de Dios en la misma fecha cada año por el resto de sus vidas y las vidas de sus descendientes. En el atrio de la capilla del Cedral se encuentra una réplica de la llamada Cruz de Cozumel o Cruz de la Conquista. Se trata de una escultura tallada en piedra de 80 cm de altura conteniendo en relieve la imagen de Cristo Crucificado, misma que descansa sobre un basamento en el cual se destaca una placa conteniendo el texto descriptivo de la importante pieza del arte sacro colonial. Fue erigida a instancias del H. Ayuntamiento de Cozumel luego de una minuciosa labor de investigación y localización de la pieza original, realizada por el Arq. e historiador Raúl Alcalá Erosa, mismo que supervisó la labor escultórica de la fiel reproducción así como su traslado y emplazamiento. La bendición de este histórico crucifijo pétreo estuvo presidida por el Arzobispo Primado de México, Cardenal Norberto Rivera Carrera en solemne misa celebrada el 6 de mayo de 2003. Otra réplica de la misma obra fue enviada en el año 2012 a Cozumel, por el propio Arq. Alcalá Erosa, la cual se encuentra en el altar mayor de la Parroquia más grande de Cozumel “Corpus Christi”.

CARNAVAL DE COZUMEL El Carnaval de Cozumel es de los más antiguos de México y de los más importantes. Es una mezcla de diversas expresiones culturales, bailes y ritmos de la Península de Yucatán y del Caribe.

Con orígenes en 1874, es una tradición iniciada por familias migrantes provenientes de Yucatán, Campeche y otros lugares, que encontraron en Cozumel un nuevo hogar. Siendo Cozumel una localidad pequeña por más de 100 años, su carnaval fue elemento importante de la convivencia familiar y sello distintivo de la pacífica y alegre vida isleña.

Reconocido en 2007 por el Consejo de Promoción Turística de México como uno de los 8 carnavales más relevantes del país, distinción que comparte con Veracruz, Mazatlán, Campeche, Mérida, Tlaxcala, Morelos y Oaxaca. En el 2015 fue invitado como miembro de la Red de Carnavales del Caribe, siendo representante de México y miembro fundador junto a otros 10 países.

A raíz del Covid 19, se han perdido empleos y la industria de cruceros cerró, así como la economía local cayó, sin embargo, a partir del 1 de junio ya se encuentra trabajando en la nueva normalidad. La industria hotelera, los cruceros, instructores de buceo y demás están preparados para recibir en los próximos meses al turismo y prestar un servicio del primer nivel.

Cozumel aprende del pasado, para enfrentar al presente y proyectarse hacia al futuro.

PREHISPANIC COZUMEL

T

he most recent research indicates that the first settlers of the island of Cozumel arrived there around the second century BC. Although not fully identified, it is believed that these individuals were part of semi-nomadic Carib groups, indistinctly engaged in fishing and hunting.

A second, more organized wave of migration arrived in the 3rd century AD. This consisted of Mayan groups identified as coming from the Guatemalan Petén region, south of the Yucatan Peninsula, with a cultural level definitely higher than their predecessors, they were sedentary, knew agriculture and mastered architectural techniques, likewise there are vestiges of its activity in some constructions and pottery remains found in the north center of the island,

... “When the multitude of the children of the Earth multiplied, it was the Cuzamil center, the flower of the Earth, the gourd of the Earth, the first tree of the Earth, the heart of the Earth” ...

The best testimony of a high level of culture and social organization that this group achieved is constituted by the numerous archaeological remains that exist throughout the island’s surface. By 1200, trade with distant lands prevailed in Central America, whose main link was Cozumel. It was on this island that all kinds of merchandise arrived from far away places. Items were stored in canoes before being shipped to other distribution points.

The third wave of migration, at the end of the Mayan classic, began its arrival in the 8th century and arrived from Tabasco and southern Campeche. It was made up of Mayan-Chontal groups of the Putún branch, navigators and merchants who on their route reached Central America and who made Cozumel an important point in their area of influence. This group introduced to the island new forms of social organization, other architectural styles and new religious cults, among which the devotion to the goddess Ix Chel, deity of the moon, fertility and birth, stood out, and that the island had its main sanctuary , giving rise to a pilgrimage rite from the entire Mayan world to Cozumel. The Chilam Balam de Chumayel recalls the Mayan dispersion along the Caribbean course:

THE CONQUEST On May 3, 1518, the Spanish captain Juan de Grijalva, was the first Spanish to land on the island he called the “Santa Cruz de la Puerta Latina”, it was on that trip that days later he officiated on the beaches of Cozumel the first Christian mass in Mexican territory.

A year later in February 1519, Hernán Cortés began the conquest of Mexico landing in Cozumel, where he incorporated the castaway Gerónimo de Aguilar, who was one of the first interpreters in the service of the conqueror. Another castaway Gonzalo Guerrero refused to return, after eight years he had adapted to indigenous customs and had even married a leading lady and had three children, hence he is considered the father of miscegenation in Mexico.

During Cortés’s stay on the island, a person who called himself lord of the entire island appeared before him. After a long talk, Cortés spoke to him about the King of Spain and the Catholic faith, in addition to emphasizing his peaceful intentions. That halach uinik accepted the conditions and sent for other Batabob on the island. A few days later all the towns returned to their normal lives, apparently abandoning the worship of their gods and worshiping the Christian cross and an image of the Virgin that Cortés installed for them. Before leaving and on the advice of Jerónimo de Aguilar, the halach uinik of Cozumel asked Cortés for a letter or safe-conduct that described that the population would not be attacked by future Spanish expeditions to the island, which was granted.

On March 4, 1519, the Spanish conquerors set sail from Cozumel, saying goodbye to the Mayans on the island.

Towards 1525 Francisco de Montejo made a request to the King of Spain to authorize the conquest and development of the island of Cozumel (Montejo was one of the captains who arrived with Cortés nine years earlier). Francisco de Montejo arrived in Cozumel on September 29, 1527 and gave it the Christian name of San Miguel de Xamancab. When the Spanish became familiar with the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, they realized that they did not have to stop on the island, excluding it as a port of arrival for Spanish ships. At the same time, as an immediate effect of the conquest, the Mayan exchange was nullified and the cult of the goddess Ix Chel was suppressed.

The islanders, without counting any more on their main economic activity, were forced to depend only on agriculture for their survival.

REPOPULATION, XIX AND XX CENTURIES In the mid-nineteenth century, as a consequence of the indigenous rebellion in the peninsula, known as the Caste War (1847), a repopulation process began with the arrival of families from almost all of Valladolid, Sabán Tihosuco and Chemax, from the state of Yucatán and founded the towns of “El Cedral” (formerly Oy ib), to the south of the island and “San Miguel” on the northwest coast. In the beginning, it was the smuggling business. Later, the exploitation of fruits, henequen, gum and copra managed to consolidate these towns, which by the end of the 19th century each had a customs office, a school and a garrison (municipal government only the second or San Miguel).

The depression of the 1930s seriously affected the island’s economy, but it had a strong resurgence during World War II, putting Cozumel back on the map. The United States built an air base for armored ship fighters in the middle of the Atlantic and an airport was built.

Lured by the crystal-clear waters, the frogmen would come to train and return home with stories of the magnificent underwater sights. Jacques Cousteau unveiled in 1960 about the richness of the coral reefs that surround the island, which made underwater enthusiasts aware of the existence of Cozumel.

By 1970, Cozumel’s population grew rapidly to 10,000, and today the island has a population of nearly 100,000.

During the colony, the island was practically uninhabited, as several factors were combined that limited the permanence and growth of the indigenous group: the scourge caused by the diseases brought by the Spanish, the exploitation to which they were subjected, the collapse of their economic system, their social organization and even the collapse of their religion and customs.

Given the abandonment, the island was frequently a refuge for pirates and corsairs who had the Caribbean as their center of operations. They did not have a permanent base on the island, but they occasionally stopped there to stock up on water, fresh food, and repair their ships. TRADITIONAL HOLIDAYS THE CEDRAL FAIR The Fiestas de la Santa Cruz and Feria del Cedral, is a tradition that dates back to 1848. It is one of the oldest celebrations in the Yucatan Peninsula and takes place in the small town of El Cedral, in the south of the island of Cozumel.

El Cedral is typically celebrated from April 29 to May 3 to commemorate the day of the Holy Cross. During the “War of the Castes” in 1848, the inhabitants of Sabán, a small town on the mainland in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, were expelled by the natives who attacked the population and massacred part of its inhabitants. Casimiro Cárdenas, one of the survivors, was carrying a wooden cross when he woke up, believing that it was the cross that had saved his life.

Once sheltered in Cozumel, Casimiro Cárdenas and other refugees took the oath to honor the Holy Cross.

They agreed that, if saved from torment and disease, they would celebrate God’s grace on the same date each year for the rest of their lives and the lives of their descendants. In the atrium of the Cedral chapel there is a replica of the so-called Cruz de Cozumel or Cruz de la Conquista. It is a sculpture carved in stone 80 cm high containing in relief the image of the Crucified Christ, which rests on a base in which a plaque containing the descriptive text of the important piece of colonial sacred art stands out. It was erected at the request of the Cozumel City Hall after a meticulous investigation and location of the original piece, carried out by the architect and historian Raúl Alcalá Erosa, who supervised the sculptural work of the faithful reproduction as well as its transfer and site. The blessing of this historic stone crucifix was presided over by the Archbishop Primate of Mexico Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera in solemn mass celebrated on May 6, 2003. Another replica of the same work was sent in 2012 to Cozumel, by Arch.

COZUMEL CARNIVAL The Cozumel Carnival is one of the oldest in Mexico and one of the most important. It is a mixture of diverse cultural expressions, dances and rhythms from the Yucatan Peninsula and the Caribbean.

With origins in 1874, it is a tradition started by migrant families from Yucatán, Campeche, and elsewhere, who found a new home in Cozumel. Cozumel being a small town for more than 100 years, its carnival was an important element of family life and a hallmark of the peaceful and joyful island life.

Recognized in 2007 by the Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico as one of the 8 most relevant carnivals in the country, a distinction that it shares with Veracruz, Mazatlán, Campeche, Mérida, Tlaxcala, Morelos and Oaxaca. In 2015 it was invited as a member of the Network of Carnavales del Caribe, being the representative of Mexico and a founding member along with 10 other countries.

As a result of Covid 19, jobs have been lost and the cruise industry closed, as well as the local economy fell, however, as of June 1, it is already working on the new normal. The hotel industry, cruise ships, diving instructors and others are prepared to receive tourism in the coming months and provide a first level service.

Cozumel learns from the past, to face the present and project towards the future

r. Tulum moved to Tulum 20 years ago to be retired on the beach. He was drawn to Tulum by it mystical powers. The underground rivers exist here are the largest in the world, this flowing water creates an energy field, like very few places in the world. This is one of the intangibles that draws people here for the most memorable vacations ever.

After living on the beach for 20 months back in 2000, there was hardly anyone here, 7 to 8 resorts if you can could call them resorts, lined the 12 km of Tulum beach. At night one of the neighbors would have a camp fire on the beach and every one staying on the beach would come. There would be 50 people sometimes from 50 countries to share their stories, among the locals to come were Cristobal and naked Bob. Mexico has the one of the best health care systems, with pharmacies like Farmacias Similares that offer an excellent quality for a affordable price not just for medicine also for doctors and laboratories, X rays and EKG. Also, if the permanent residents want to get IMSS, Social Security, only needs to meet several requirements, the price of this is very affordable. The system definitely works as RJ had open heart surgery in Mexico City at IMSS hospital. Tulum has different private hospitals, doctor offices, doctors still make house calls and a great Red Cross service. Which this is so attractive to expats that have astronomical health care insurance bills.

RJ and Maria use the Sports Center to exercise with their dog Azul. This facility is one of the nicest in the state with tennis court, basketball, soccer fields, baseball park with bleachers, and beautiful common areas.

The hundreds of great restaurants both on the beach and downtown provide world class cuisine and great street food. This is also a very big drawn for the many folks looking to invest in Tulum.

He wants to thank John Kendall owner of Colibri Group and Lic. Octavio Gutierrez, for being great friends for many years. They share so many stories about the development of this wonderful mystical pueblo. RJ insists Tulum has great opportunities for both investors and folks looking for retire, only in USA there 10,000 people retiring at day. The retirees love simple cultural activities like traditional dance lessons, cooking classes, guitar lessons, Spanish lessons and also love to only admire the cultural expressions.

The location of Tulum makes it so accessible to almost every American and Canadian in just a few hours flight, this is why so many are looking at retiring here in Tulum. The President of Mexico announced this past week that Tulum will be getting a new airport.

r. Tulum vino a Tulum hace 20 años para retirarse en la zona de playa. La atracción mística de Tulum lo atrapo. Debido a que Tulum posee el Sistema de ríos subterráneos más grande del planeta y eso provoca que la energía de Tulum sea especial como pocos en el mundo. Esto es lo intangible que atrae a mucha gente para quedarse.

Después de vivir por 20 meses aquí en Tulum en el 2000 no había casi nadie, y solo 7 u 8 hoteles si es que se pudieran llamar hoteles, alineados en 12 km de playa de Tulum. Por las noches algún vecino prendía una fogata en la playa y todos los que se hospedaban podían llegar. Podría haber sido 50 personas y algunas veces de 50 diferentes países para compartir sus historias. Entre los locales se encontraba Cristobal y Naked Bob. Muchos siguen siendo amigos hasta estas fechas.

El aburrimiento lo golpeo y volvió a ocuparse en Bienes Raíces y desde el 2002 ha vendido oportunidades. Él quiere agradecer a John Kendall dueño de Colibri Group y al licenciado Octavio Gutiérrez por ser sus grandes amigos por muchos años.

México cuenta con uno de los mejores sistemas de salud, como farmacias similares que ofrecen una excelente calidad a precios económicos no solo en medicinas sino también cuenta con doctores, laboratorios, rayos X y ECG. También si el residente permanente quiere obtener el servicio del IMSS Seguro social, solo necesita cumplir con todos los diferentes requisitos, su precio es muy económico. Raymond atestigua con su experiencia cuando tuvo su operación de corazón abierto en el IMSS de la ciudad de México.

Tulum tiene diferentes hospitales privados, consultorios privados y los doctores aun hacen visitas a domicilio, también cuenta con cruz roja la cual brinda un excelente servicio.

RJ y María acostumbran a caminar en el centro deportivo para ejercitar a su perro Azul. Este centro es uno de los mejores en el estado la cual cuenta con canchas de tenis, basketball, canchas de football, estacionamiento, gradas y unas bellas áreas comunes.

Los cientos de restaurantes tanto en el centro como en la playa ofrecen platillos de clase mundial y con exquisita comida en los puestos, lo cual atrae a las personas que buscan invertir y vivir en Tulum.

Tulum es un maravilloso y místico pueblo. RJ insiste en que Tulum tiene grandes oportunidades para inversionistas y para personas que quieran retirarse.

Solo en Estados Unidos hay 10,000 personas retirándose diariamente. Ese mercado es muy grande y Tulum necesita residentes permanentes que ayuden a fortalecer la economía y que este en movimiento durante las 4 estaciones del año como ocurre en San Miguel de Allende y Ajijic el cual es un pequeño pueblo a las inmediaciones del lago de Chapala.

Un modelo exitoso de ecoturismo

E

l 14 de octubre del año 2003, Julissa Sánchez y yo ,descubrimos el fenómeno de las serpientes colgantes en la comunidad maya de Kantemó, localizada en el municipio de José María Morelos, estado de Quintana Roo, cuando realizábamos un diagnóstico biológico de los alrededores para la entonces Comisión para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas (CDI), con el objeto de estudiar alternativas de desarrollo comunitario que los habitantes del lugar pudieran implementar para mejorar su calidad de vida, aprovechando los recursos naturales del ejido. Debíamos desarrollar operaciones sustentables enfocadas a la observación de flora, fauna y actividades acuáticas en la laguna de Chichankana; es así cómo nace el proyecto Kantemó.

Dentro de los atractivos que ofrece la comunidad maya de Kantemó encontramos: recorridos por una laguna muy bien conservada que preserva su fauna original como cocodrilos, tortugas, peces, camarones, cangrejos y una gran variedad de aves acuáticas.

En dicha laguna se realizan recorridos en canoa y campamentos, para lo cual cuenta con 2 palapas, una bodega, baños ecológicos y un muelle. Otro atractivo es el sendero interpretativo de 3.5 kilómetros entre la exuberante selva mediana el cual se recorre en bicicleta o caminando. Allí se pueden observar más de 80 especies de aves residentes y migratorias, además de las especies florales típicas de la región.

Sin duda, lo más fascinante de visitar la comunidad maya de Kantemó es La Cueva de las Serpientes Colgantes, cuyo descubrimiento vino a dar a este proyecto comunitario algo novedoso, exclusivo, único, que solo en Kantemó se puede ver. En esta cueva residen 6 especies de murciélagos que forman colonias con miles de individuos, base de la cadena alimenticia de otras especies que allí habitan.

La caverna tiene en el fondo un cenote de aguas cristalinas que alberga a extraños peces endémicos como la anguila ciega (Ophisternon infernale) y la dama blanca (Ogilbia pearsei), además de invertebrados como el camarón cavernícola (Creaseria morleyi) y la cochinilla acuática (Creaseriella anops). Por último, en la parte superior y dentro de las cavidades y paredes rocosas saturadas de fósiles marinos, viven las serpientes ratoneras manchadas (Elaphe flavirufa), especie no venenosa, constrictora, que se descuelga durante las noches, sigilosamente, para atrapar, al vuelo su único alimento, los murciélagos.

Una vez finalizado el diagnóstico y los estudios, la comunidad accedió a desarrollar un proyecto ecoturístico piloto en Katemó. Seleccionamos a un grupo operativo de 10 personas a las cuales se capacitó durante un año en diversos rubros, incluyendo el idioma inglés. Posteriormente se trabajó con grupos de mujeres para el servicio de hospedaje, manejo y preparación de alimentos y banquetes. La CDI aportó recursos para la construcción de infraestructura y fue el comunicador Oscar Cadena quien lanzó este producto al mercado a través de su programa “Encadénate” mostrando al mundo una comunidad que ni siquiera está en el mapa y que hoy es visitada por gente de todos los continentes que quieren ser testigo de este maravilloso espectáculo natural.

Dentro de los atractivos que ofrece la comunidad maya de Kantemó encontramos una laguna muy bien conservada que preserva su fauna original.

El modelo de ecoturismo comunitario de Kantemó ha tenido éxito gracias al proceso participativo con el que fue desarrollado. Al igual que otros desarrollos de este tipo, aglutinados bajo la marca Maya Ka’an, los beneficios van directamente a los pobladores locales, generando autoempleo, aprovechando y conservando su patrimonio natural, cultural y religioso.

Los pobladores de Kantemó siguen viviendo con su estilo tradicional, hablando en su lengua materna, conservando sus prácticas culinarias, trabajando una agricultura de bajo impacto, compartiendo con sus familias, utilizando los recursos que genera el turismo en temporada como un extra a las actividades habituales; esto ha ayudado a evitar la migración a la zona norte en la búsqueda de empleo, ha reforzado la unidad familiar y fomenta la superación personal gracias a la capacitación que reciben en los intercambios y congresos en los que participan; además de organizarse según sus estilos y costumbres. Los habitantes de Kantemó han aprendido a manejar las nuevas tecnologías y varios de sus hijos o familiares están estudiando en instituciones de educación superior, lo que aporta capital humano profesional con formación en turismo alternativo, optimizando los recursos y los servicios ofrecidos por la comunidad.

Los beneficios van directamente a los pobladores locales, generando autoempleo, aprovechando y conservando su patrimonio.

Respetar una capacidad de carga limitada a un máximo de 10-12 persona por recorrido, así como el adecuado manejo de los desechos sólidos, han sido las acciones básicas del grupo para poder conservar la fauna de la cueva de las serpientes colgantes en Kantemó. Un número ilimitado de personas, exceso de luz, de ruido o de tráfico, romperían el equilibrio de este frágil ecosistema donde se puede apreciar uno de los espectáculos de la vida animal más alucinantes del planeta.

n October 14, 2003, Julissa Sánchez and I discovered the phenomenon of hanging snakes in the Mayan community of Kantemó, located in the municipality of José María Morelos, Quintana Roo state, when we carried out a biological diagnosis of the surroundings to the then Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI), in order to study community development alternatives that local inhabitants could implement to improve their quality of life, taking advantage of the ejido’s natural resources. We had to develop sustainable operations focused on the observation of flora, fauna and aquatic activities in the Chichankana lagoon; This is how the Kantemó project was born.

Among the attractions offered by the Mayan community of Kantemó we find: tours of a very well preserved lagoon that preserves its original fauna such as crocodiles, turtles, fish, shrimp, crabs and a great variety of aquatic birds. In this lagoon there are canoe tours and camping, for which it has 2 palapas, a winery, ecological baths and a dock. Another attraction is the 3.5-kilometer interpretive trail through the exuberant medium jungle which can be traveled by bicycle or on foot. There you can see more than 80 species of resident and migratory birds, in addition to the typical floral species of the region.

Undoubtedly, the most fascinating thing about visiting the Mayan community of Kantemó is The Cave of the Hanging Serpents, whose discovery came to give this community project something new, exclusive, unique, which can only be seen in Kantemó.

In this cave there are 6 species of bats that form colonies with thousands of individuals, the basis of the food chain of other species that live there.

The cavern has at the bottom a cenote with crystalline waters that is home to strange endemic fish such as the blind eel (Ophisternon infernale) and the white lady (Ogilbia pearsei), as well as invertebrates such as the cave shrimp (Creaseria morleyi) and the aquatic scale (Creaseriella anops). Finally, in the upper part and within the cavities and rocky walls saturated with marine fossils, live the spotted buzzards (Elaphe flavirufa), a non-poisonous, constrictive species, which lowers itself at night, stealthily, to catch, on the fly their only food, bats.

Once the diagnosis and studies were completed, the community agreed to develop a pilot ecotourism project in Katemó. We selected a working group of 10 people who were trained for a year in various areas, including the English language. Later, they worked with groups of women for the service of lodging, handling, food preparation and banquets. The CDI provided resources for the construction of infrastructure and it was the communicator Oscar Cadena who launched this product to the market through his program “Encadénate” showing the world a community that is not even on the map and that today is visited by people of all the continents that want to witness this wonderful natural spectacle.

The Kantemó community ecotourism model has been successful thanks to the participatory process with which it was developed. Like other developments of this type, grouped under the Maya Ka’an brand, the benefits go directly to the local inhabitants, generating self-employment, taking advantage of and conserving their natural, cultural and religious heritage.

The inhabitants of Kantemó continue to live with their style. traditional, speaking in their mother tongue, preserving their culinary practices, working a low-impact agriculture, sharing with their families, using the resources generated by seasonal tourism as an extra to the usual activities; This has helped to avoid migration to the north in the search for employment, has strengthened the family unit and fosters personal growth thanks to the training they receive in the exchanges and conferences in which they participate; in addition to organizing themselves according to their styles and customs. The inhabitants of Kantemó have learned to handle new technologies and several of their children or relatives are studying in higher education institutions, which provides professional human capital with training in alternative tourism, optimizing the resources and services offered by the community.

Respecting a carrying capacity limited to a maximum of 10-12 people per route, as well as the proper management of solid waste, have been the basic actions of the group in order to conserve the fauna of the cave of the hanging snakes in Kantemó. An unlimited number of people, excess light, noise or traffic, would disrupt the balance of this fragile ecosystem where you can see one of the most amazing animal life spectacles on the planet.

Particularidades del español yucateco

V

isitar la Península de Yucatán es una gran aventura por su historia y su riqueza natural que nos regala paisaje y lugares extraordinarios de selva y mar, así como los afamados cenotes. Un recorrido por Yucatán, Campeche y Quintana Roo deja a los turistas embelesados gracias a la belleza de los paisajes, la tranquilidad de los lugares y los vestigios arqueológicos y coloniales esparcidos por toda la geografía de estos tres estados.

Una característica de este rincón de México, que provoca que los turistas regresen con gusto, es la amabilidad y hospitalidad de los anfitriones, quienes poseen una particularidad muy especial que causa intriga y gracia a los visitantes: un lenguaje particular que evidencia el sincretismo entre el maya y el hispano. El español yucateco se distingue porque utilizan palabras del castellano antiguo, de la lengua maya y una mezcla de estos dos idiomas que dan una identidad muy singular a los nativos de la península.

Si usted visita cualquier ciudad o pueblo de la península de Yucatán deberá acostumbrarse a escuchar ciertas palabras (yucatequismos) que pueden ser claves para disfrutar plenamente su paseo, pues algunas de estas le podrán servir y le evitarán malentendidos durante su viaje.

Para los peninsulares de origen, si usted es de complexión gruesa es purux (purush) o dzipón, el de complexión delgada es ts’ auayak, si es rubio o de piel clara le dirán chel, si es moreno box (bosh), si su cabello es rizado entonces es mulix (mulish), si no tiene cabello es kolis. Todas estas palabras mayas pueden ser adaptadas a la lengua española al agregar terminaciones indicativas a cierta condición como el diminutivo, de esta manera surge la palabra boxito para referirse cariñosamente a una persona.

En la vida cotidiana las partes del cuerpo también se nombran en maya, ombligo tuch, axila xic, el seno chuchú, así como las necesidades fisiológicas también forman parte de este lenguaje tan peculiar de la península, el orín uix y la acción de orinar uixar, el excremento tá, palabra que también se aplica a las personas que no tienen gracia, demuestran prepotencia y altanería ante los demás.

Entre el vasto lenguaje yucatanense podemos escuchar que al resto de comida se le llama xix (shish), al perro le llaman pec, al hot dog que en lengua inglesa es perro caliente se le llama choco pec, una expresión muy común es el ¡fóó!, el cual indica asco. Remojar el pan o la galleta en el café o la leche se dice hacer chuk, un susto o expresión de sorpresa es ¡guay!, el ¡máre! significa asombro ante alguna situación, a un objeto cualquiera se le llama “negociante”, amontonar objetos en un lugar es achocar, oprimir un botón o palanca es apesgar, disolver un caramelo en la boca es anolar, observar con cierta discreción es acechar.

La lista es muy amplia y el espacio para desarrollar el tema se agota, así que pasaremos a compartir algunas expresiones coloquiales de uso común entre los peninsulares de Yucatán.

Cabe mencionar que un rasgo muy importante es la pronunciación, ya que la influencia de la lengua maya es muy notoria en el habla de los peninsulares, de tal modo que al escucharlos podremos observar que la ene al final de una palabra la cambian por eme, ejemplo: Yucatám, pam. La doble ele se omite en varias palabras como silla, costilla y tortilla, de tal forma que lo expresan como sia, costia y tortia, así como en algunas otras palabras se les agrega la doble ele, como en el caso de policía y sandía que pronuncian como polecilla y sandilla. Los peninsulares no usan la eñe, la sustituyen por ni, así la piña es pinia, el niño es ninio. La hache en maya suena como jota.

Entrando en frases coloquiales podemos comentar las siguientes: “la hach y nos vamos” aplicado regularmente en reuniones bohemias. ¿Hiciste puts escuela? es la pregunta a los estudiantes que se escapan de la escuela. En invierno en Yucatam no hay frío, hay heladez, en Yucatán no se abrazan, se hacen loch, en Yucatán no desean algo, están poch.

Entre muchas otras frases de ingeniosa picardía que utilizan los paisanos, también llamados huiros, encontramos algunas expresiones y palabras que combinan el inglés con el maya gracias al parecido de algunas palabras, creando el yucainglish que dice: I whish to huix (yo deseo orinar) o la posible confusión entre miss y mis, la primera es una señorita inglesa y la segunda un gas intestinal, hasta la próxima.

Homenaje a Waldemar Noh Tzec

onocí a Waldemar Noh Tzec, en la Ciudad de México en el 2001 por un taller que realizamos los participantes de aquel Programa de Creadores en Lenguas Indígenas del Consejo Nacional para Cultura y Las Artes, CONACULTA. En aquella ocasión cada autor leyó parte de su creación en lenguas originarias y su respectiva traducción al español. Los comentarios posteriores a las obras se realizaron tomando como referencia la versión en español, ante la incapacidad de dominar las distintas lenguas mexicanas que resonaron en el recinto.

Cuando Waldemar Noh Tzec nos obsequió su palabra, con la recia resonancia de su rotunda voz, escuchamos cantos de ranas y pájaros, vocablos de la selva. En ese momento la Lengua Maya, nos reveló su naturaleza musical, pulsación del lenguaje que nos hace partícipes de sonidos primigenios y primordiales, provocan un viaje hacia las interrogantes, las dudas y las certezas acerca del origen de las cosas cuya existencia aprisionamos al nombrarlas. Prosiguió leyendo la traducción en español, en ella percibimos significados, pero no sonoridad, cadencia, música.

Waldemar nos dijo que es un texto difícil de traducir.

El laureado escritor zapoteco Víctor de Terán expresó “ese poema me ha salvado el día”.

Orador, docente, defensor incansable de la lengua y cultura maya. Su labor educativa y literaria ha dejado frutos eternos y semillas en tierra fértil. Fue uno de los fundadores del taller literario Génali en Calkiní Campeche, donde Briseida Cuevas Cob, célebre escritora en lengua maya y español, como alumna, trazó los primeros versos en su idioma materno. Waldermar pertenece a esa generación de mayas revolucionarios que usaron la escritura para oponerse a la desaparición del idioma y a la discriminación étnica y lingüística. Siendo nuestra lengua reducida a carbones apagados por la conquista y la colonia, Noh Tzec mostró que aún la llama de la creatividad arde y avivó nuevamente el fuego incansable e interminable de nuestra lengua, a través de la sonoridad y la fuerza semántica de sus versos, donde privilegia la naturaleza fonética y sintáctica de la Lengua Maya, como se aprecia en el siguiente fragmento del poema U xitil lol, Se abren las Flores.

Ahora me ha llegado la noticia de la muerte del maestro, me ha llegado en medio de esta emergencia sanitaria mundial, me ha llegado de manera inesperada como un rayo no anunciado por el relámpago y que hace sentir un temblor en el alma después del estruendo. Luego de esta noticia es raro sentir aún la presencia del maestro cuando repaso sus versos, ¿A caso el fin de la existencia alcanzará a los poetas si el eco de sus palabras resuenan en el tiempo? Le sigo escuchando con el garbo que lo distinguió al dar lectura a sus versos, los versos de todos prolongados en los días y las noches.

La versión en Lengua Maya está construida siguiendo el aliento rítmico de oraciones secuenciales y sonidos reiterados a modo de plegaria, invocación y conjuro, lo que teje un contexto sacro para el hilo conductor del poema. Hace rememorar que cada mañana el renacimiento de la gran flor dorada con sus múltiples flechas, no beligerantes sino bienhechoras, es un acto sagrado en la mirada del corazón y el alma de los mayas. La flor de luz que despierta después de atravesar en forma de jaguar el inframundo, obsequia a la humanidad vida y esperanza.

No es casual que el poema se construya como una plegaria, la repetición de sonidos se trasforma en el asombro y agradecimiento insistente del ser humano.

Desde la visión particular de la Cultura Maya escribió versos universales no solo para los de su pueblo, sino para todos los pueblos, para la humanidad. En del poema Kajnal nojkaj / Habitante de la gran ciudad, convoca a los seres de las urbes a mirar de nuevo el esplendor de la naturaleza, la grandiosidad de las cosas sencillas. A despojarse de lo vano para sentir la tierra y el sol otra vez, como la primera vez y regresar al asombro de estar vivos en medio del cosmos.

En su nombre actualmente la Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno Federal en conjunto con el Gobierno del Estado de Campeche y el Ayuntamiento de Calkiní, otorgan el Premio Internacional de Poesía del Mundo Maya Waldemar Noh Tzec.

El poeta ha transcendido dejando su legado para continuar la resistencia, la persistencia y la creación de las nuevas generaciones. Qué por el milenario sak bej, senda blanca construida con sus palabras, sigamos caminando, con los ojos en dirección a la gran flor de luz que todos los días nos regala su aroma resplandeciente.

met Waldemar Noh Tzec, in Mexico City in 2001 through a workshop carried out by the participants of that Program for Creators in Indigenous Languages of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, CONACULTA. On that occasion, each author read part of their creation in native languages and their respective translation into Spanish. The comments after the works were made taking the Spanish version as a reference, given the inability to master the different Mexican languages that resounded in the venue.

When Waldemar Noh Tzec gave us his word, with the strong resonance of his resounding voice, we heard songs of frogs and birds, words from the jungle. The flower of light that awakens after crossing the underworld in the form of a jaguar, gives humanity life and hope. It is not by chance that the poem is constructed as a prayer, the repetition of sounds becomes the astonishment and insistent gratitude of the human being.

From the particular vision of the Mayan Culture, she wrote universal verses not only for her people, but for all peoples, for humanity. By Patricia Feldman González The Pyramid of the Dead is a monumental altar / art instataltion which was created within the context of Day of the Dead of the Calaca Festival in San Miguel de Allende, of which the artist Tomás Bürkey is co-founder. It is a collective piece that unites hundreds of peope who are honoring their loved ones who have passed in a creative way bringing together tradition and contemporary art, uniting people and souls in a profound and imagintive way.

I arrived in Mexico in October 1972 barely 13. One of the first things I experienced was the Day of the Dead. My mother had just died of cancer in a world where death was denied and children were not included in the dying process. In response I became an “Angel of Death” and help those who are passing, and their families, create a positive transition for all.

When Tomas created the Pyramid of the Dead in 2014 I was elated and did all I could to support it. Making a Nicho for my beloved sister Rebecca, who passed in 2012, was one of the most healing activities I have ever done to deal with the deep grief and mourning that accompanies such loss. In 2017 my best friend, Shayne, died several days before we started building the pyramid. Helping others deal with their loss was one of the best things I could’ve ever done in the midst of my own pain at the moment. I am deeply grateful to Tomas for creating such a miraculous healing monument. I am witness to the thousands of people who are transformed by its presence as I am witness to the transformation of myself.

La Pirámide de los Muertos es un altar monumental / instalación de arte que fue creado en el contexto del Día de los Muertos y el Festival La Calaca en San Miguel de Allende, del cual el artista Tomás Bürkey es co-fundador. Es una pieza colectiva que une a cientos de personas que están homenajeando a sus seres queridos que han pasado, de manera creativa uniendo tradición y arte contemporáneo, uniendo a las personas en el alma de una manera profunda e imaginativa.

Llegué a México en octubre de 1972 con apenas 13 años. Una de las primeras cosas que viví fue el Día de los Muertos.

Mi madre acaba de morir de cáncer en un mundo donde se negaba la muerte y los niños no estaban incluidos en el proceso de morir. En respuesta, me convertí en un "Angel de la Muerte" y ayudo a los que están muriendose, y a sus familias, a crear una transición positiva para todos.

Cuando Tomas creó la Pirámide de los Muertos en 2014, estaba feliz y hice todo lo que pude para apoyarla. Hacer un Nicho para mi amada hermana Rebecca, quien falleció en 2012, fue una de las actividades más sanadoras que he realizado para lidiar con el profundo dolor y el duelo que acompaña a tal pérdida. En 2017, mi mejor amigo, Shayne, murió varios días antes de que comenzáramos a construir la pirámide. A ayudar a los demás a lidiar con su pérdida, fué una de las mejores cosas que pude haber hecho en medio de mi propio dolor en este momento. Estoy profundamente agradecida con Tomás por crear un monumento curativo tan milagroso. Soy testigo de las miles de personas que se transforman con su presencia. Xux Ek

esde la época prehispánica existe un manjar escondido en el corazón de la selva, se trata del xux ek. Ampliamente conocido en las comunidades de Quintana Roo, Yucatán y Campeche, se cree posee poderes afrodisíacos, y según los conocedores es fuente de nutrientes y alarga la vida.

Los campesinos y agricultores de la península de Yucatán una o dos veces por año deciden deleitarse con el tradicional xux ek, es decir, larvas de avispas, larvas de ek. Las avispas Brachygastra mellifica construyen enormes panales donde depositan sus huevecillos que se transforman en larvas, dichas larvas son extraídas del panal y se pasan por un comal bien caliente entre 10 y 15 minutos, se sirven con chile habanero y limón. Cabe destacar que la Brachygastra mellifica llamada ek en lengua maya yucateca es una de las pocas especies de avispas que produce miel.

Para las familias de milperos comer xux ek es una celebración, equivale a un buen corte de carne.

Generalmente cuando se encuentra un panal con las condiciones idóneas para preparar y degustar las larvas de avispa, la familia se reúne en la mesa para una cena especial. Este platillo forma parte del patrimonio inmaterial de Quintana Roo. Es difícil hallar un panal de avispas silvestres capaz de cumplir con todas las características requeridas para su consumo según la tradición maya, por tanto, se considera un golpe de suerte y una bendición ingerir el xux ek. Según abuelos de San Silverio, el panel ideal debe tener entre 40 y 50 centímetros de diámetro y unos 60 a 80 centímetros de alto. Las ek son fáciles de reconocer, ya que son negras y amarillas, su panal es cónico y contiene unas 1000 larvas. La producción de miel y de larvas depende de la fase de la luna. Cuando el panal está en las ramas altas de los árboles se debe recolectar la miel y las larvas con la luna llena, si el panal se encuentra a nivel del suelo se debe cortar el panal en cuarto creciente. Generalmente se usan hojas de palma seca para hacer humo y evitar el ataque de las avispas.

Son las personas mayores las que mantienen viva esta tradición culinaria. Cuando ven un panal no apto para su consumo lo protegen de sus depredadores naturales, las hormigas rojas (xulab) y negras (saakal), dejándolo prosperar hasta el momento preciso. Tras cortar el panal hay que desprender la parte superior y permitir a todas las avispas salir. Generalmente el xux ek se acompaña con tortillas y las familias disfrutan de la miel que posee un sabor peculiar. Se buscan específicamente los panales de Brachygastra mellifica por ser menos agresiva que su pariente las box xux (Pepsini).

Como es de suponer, el consumo de ek es una recompensa que la madre naturaleza regala al maya por vivir en equilibrio con su entorno, no debe ser explotado, ni masificado ya que esto causaría daños irreversibles para el medio ambiente. El xux ek es uno de los secretos que guarda la selva y esperamos que así se mantenga.

The production of honey and larvae depends on the phase of the Moon. When the honeycomb is in the high branches of the trees, the honey and larvae must be collected with the full moon, if the honeycomb is at ground level, the honeycomb must be cut in a crescent quarter. Dried palm leaves are generally used to make smoke and avoid the attack of wasps.

It is the elderly who keep this culinary tradition alive. When they see a honeycomb unfit for consumption, they protect it from its natural predators, the red (xulab) and black (saakal) ants, allowing it to thrive until the right time. After cutting the honeycomb, remove the upper part and allow all the wasps to leave.

ince pre-Hispanic times there has been a hidden delicacy in the heart of the jungle, it is xux ek. Widely known in the communities of Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Campeche, it is believed to have aphrodisiac powers, and according to connoisseurs it is a source of nutrients and extends life.

The peasants and farmers of the Yucatan peninsula once or twice a year decide to enjoy the traditional xux ek, that is, larvae of wasps, larvae of ek. Brachygastra mellifica wasps build huge honeycombs where they lay their eggs that transform into larvae. These larvae are extracted from the honeycomb and passed through a hot comal for 10 to 15 minutes, served with habanero pepper and lemon. It should be noted that the Brachygastra mellifica called ek in the Yucatecan Mayan language is one of the few species of wasps that produces honey.

Generally the xux ek is accompanied with tortillas and families enjoy honey that has a peculiar flavor. Brachygastra mellifica combs are specifically sought after as they are less aggressive than their relative box xux (Pepsini).

As is to be expected, the consumption of ek is a reward that Mother Nature gives to the maya for living in balance with their environment, it should not be exploited or overcrowded as this would cause irreversible damage to the environment.

The xux ek is one of the secrets that the jungle keeps and we hope that it will remain that way.

For the families of milperos eating xux ek is a celebration, it is equivalent to a good cut of meat.

Generally when a honeycomb is found with the ideal conditions to prepare and taste the wasp larvae, the family gathers at the table for a special dinner. This dish is part of the intangible heritage of Quintana Roo. It is difficult to find a wild wasp honeycomb capable of meeting all the characteristics required for its consumption according to the Mayan tradition, therefore, it is considered a stroke of luck and a blessing to ingest the xux ek. According to San Silverio’s grandparents, the ideal panel should be between 40 and 50 centimeters in diameter and 60 to 80 centimeters high. The ek are easy to recognize, as they are black and yellow, their honeycomb is conical and contains about 1000 larvae.
