ipsters, millionaire collectors and celebrities all flocked to Miami’s artsy Midtown, Wynwood and South Beach for the 13th annual Art Basel Miami Beach and Miami Art Week events. Not all the allure was for the love of art, many flew in for those lavish and decadent parties at some of the trendiest Miami venues that make it the star-studded affair of the year. A bit of “death of art” but not for the many like me who are always awestruck by the fabulous works of renowned artists. This time, in addition to a week-long schedule of art shows and pop up shops and glitzy parties there was even a musical performance by Miley Cyrus at South Beach’s Raleigh Hotel and a slew of spotted celebs in town. A new Survey sector brought 13 art-historical projects to the fair, including many rare works never before exhibited in an art fair. Featuring 267 leading

international galleries from 31 countries, the show – whose Lead Partner is UBS – had an attendance of 73,000 during it exhibit. Attendees included representatives of over 160 museum and institution groups from across the world with a surging number of new private collectors from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Top Exhibits: Mana Miami: Impressive show of giant-sized artworks in the colossal former warehouse in the heart of Wynwood (which they own). ▪ Shen Wei performance: 12 dancers swirled slowly through the Freedom Tower exhibit with an amazing performance.▪ Galerie Gmurzynska, Art Basel Miami Beach: The booth brought together 20th century masterworks by Joan Miro, Kazimir Malevich, Wifredo Lam, Cy Twombly, Francis Bacon and others in addition to a specially made film that incorporated an original video of the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo in which a Miro painting is used in the actual set. ▪

Ephemera: Was commissioned by Perrier-Jouët, and featured a tabletop ‘garden’ that folded flat when people approached and rose as they move away. ▪ Nick Cave’s Hustle Coat: Artist Nick Cave is best known for his fabric sculptures known as Soundsuits. His latest work: “hustle coats,” a trench coat lined with jewels, sold for $60,000 within the first minutes of the VIP opening of Art Basel Miami. ▪ Strandbeest: Dutch artist Theo Jansen’s dinosaur-sized mechanical sculptures placed behind Miami Beach’s W Hotel on the beach. ▪ Art Public: Outdoor and interactive sculptures open to the public, with artworks from some of the best sculptors the world over placed around the Collins Park between the ocean and the Bass Museum. ▪ Rubell Family Collection: Don and Mera Rubell have installed new art on the first floor of their Wynwood warehouse museum.

Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach – Aventura Honors Former Club President, State Representative Joe Gibbons with its First Community Service Award

The Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach – Aventura awarded Hon. Joseph “Joe” Gibbons, former District 100 State Representative, with its inaugural Community Service Award. Gibbons, who was the 2005 Hallandale – Aventura Club Rotarian of the Year and the club’s president from 2006 to 2007, received the club’s very first award dedicated to a member who has worked tirelessly to create a positive change in their community. “Being The Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach – Aventura’s very first Community Service Award recipient is a humbling honor,” Gibbons said. “Since moving to Florida and making the Hallandale Beach area my home, implementing ways to best serve the people of this community, whether it be through policy or other impactful means, has been my foremost priority. I have wanted nothing else than for this community to continue to progress into one of the greatest, safest, and most prosperous cities in the state and the nation.” During his eight years representing District 100 in the Florida State House of Representatives, Gibbons served in several leadership roles. He is currently chairman of the Energy Equity Alliance (EEA), a recently launched nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring working class families, fixed-income households, and communities of color are adequately represented and participating in energy policy discussions that affect them. Gibbons, a former City of Hallandale Beach Commissioner, served as a board member for the Hallandale Beach Neighborhood Improvement Corporation, the Area-wide Council on Aging, and the African American Success Foundation. Additionally, he was a member of the Broward County Planning Council and he is a member of the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center Board of Directors.

10 buenas razones para practicar Yoga en el 2015

HOLA LATINOS P.17 Salud

Health

Javier Wilensky & Alexander Cohen Maestros de Yoga/ Yoga Instructors at Omechaye Wellness & Fitness Center

10 reasons to do Yoga in 2015 By: Alexander Cohen, E-RYT Co-founder of Omechaye The ancient Art of Yoga with its physical, spiritual and meditative practices has great benefits for our wellbeing. This holistic healing art helps us establish a balance which goes beyond the physical body and into the mind and spirit-a balance which is truly internal. This balance within promotes an opening of the heart with positive effects not only on our physical health, but on our relationship with ourselves and the rest of the world. We could all use a little more healing, a little more positivity in our relationships and a little more peace in our being. Here’s how yoga can help you get there in 2015: YOGA: 1-Reduces stress levels, helping you to find an everyday calm which will affect every part of your life. 2-Tones the muscles in the body and elevates the vital energy, giving you more stamina. 3-Relieves anxiety and depression, and helps to clear out stuck feelings and thought patterns. 4-Promotes flexibility and balance, on and off the mat. 5-Oxygenates and cleans the organs, promoting cardiovascular health and good digestion. 6-Stimulates the endocrine system, strengthening your immunity. 7-Strengthens the respiratory system, so you can breathe deeper. 8-Regulates your biorhythms, so you can sleep better. 9-Helps you find and maintain your healthy weight. 10-Enhances clarity, promoting good concentration and better communication....and all these benefits are available to every single person, no matter their past, no matter their body type, no matter their abilities or limitations. In the United States alone there are more than 20 million people who practice some form of yoga. So that leaves us with only one question -- what are you waiting for?

Paso #1

Step #1

Eliminate the Energy Vampires

Surround yourself with positive people: a secret to the success and health By: Nancy Esteves Why is it so important to surround yourself with positive people? Many people don’t realize or believe that negative people can really affect our health, but yes they can! A negative person is a kind of vampire that sucks all our energy and they can be toxic. Negative people are not necessarily bad people, but they have a way of thinking that does not help us at all, they actually hurt us. Our physical health starts with good mental health and a positive frame of mind. The saddest thing is that they can be your friends, your parents, your brothers, your children, perhaps even your partner, whoever it may be when you start hearing “You can’t do this. You can’t do that, this will never happen…” --watch out. These people never expect to see a change on your part because they don’t believe in themselves. So start looking for people who can contribute to your personal growth and health. Surround yourself with people whose outlook on life is positive, look for people who will encourage you, so you can purse your goals whatever they may be. How does our mind work? Your mentality is shaped by external influences, many times from the people you choose to associate with. If you have a lot of people telling you that you will never have success with your life goals, it may push you to fail. Even if you’ve developed a good mental strength, a shadow of doubt can cloud your mind and release all kinds of negative thoughts that bring failure. What should we do with our loved ones and friends if they are negative? You need to call them on it: “I’m sorry; I do not want to hear that.” Set limits on the things you do not want to talk about, and others things to be completely avoided. The Vampires: Sound familiar?

Negative people are those who: Never bring a solution, only problems. They speak only when they have to say something bad, never anything good. They do not listen, just talk and sarcastically criticize people who are successful without any reason, they repeatedly frustrate you with their problems, they want to blame everyone but themselves, are always miserable, never have anything nice to say, and deplete you mentally. They are a health hazard! When choosing new friends, positive one may make all the difference in the world. As together you will be more motivated to achieve any of your goals much faster. I’m sure we all have some vampires in our lives right now, so it’s time for a change!

Paso #2

Step #2

To Good Health Change the way you think and Heal

Paso #3

Food for Thought: “Change the way you think and change your life.” Philosopher and author Louise Hay says in her writings that “cancer is an outward manifestation of a deep resentment, anger and pain for a long time nested within a person’s body until it literally devours it.” So could it be that we are partly responsible for letting this disease or any for that matter attack us? We all create our experiences through thoughts and feelings, but we deny our power blaming others for our frustrations. According to Hay, the secret weapon we have to counteract cancer or any type of disease is changing our attitude towards them. We must radically change our way of thinking performing daily tasks with affirmations, visualizations, change in diet and psychotherapy. Many people have won the battle simply by deciding to abandon resentment. Hence, attitude does matter. You should make it a habit to use daily affirmations, smile, be thankful, forgive, and especially have faith you can change your life and improve your health. Examples of affirmations: “I’m in Perfect Health” “I’m healthy, full of energy and vitality” “Every cell in my body is irradiated daily in the healing perfection of my divine being”

Step #3

Para una Buena Salud- Eliminar Toxinas y “Comer Sano”

For the Good Health- Eliminate Toxins and “Eat Clean”

Flushing out your system is extremely important and a way to get off to a “clean start” to kick off the New Year. Below is a quick guide to natural foods that help remove toxins from the body. Leafy greens The chlorophyll contained in these vegetables help remove toxins (such as metals and

pesticides) from the body. These foods help the liver do its detoxification function. Lime They are ideal to stay hydrated. Vitamin C converts toxins in water making it easy to flush out. Watercress With that bitter taste, the cousin of cabbage and Brussels sprouts contains a high percentage of water, which makes it a purifier. It also has magnesium, which helps eliminate fluids.

Garlic Garlic can be incorporated into everything and also protects the heart; it also activates liver enzymes that help remove toxins from the blood. Ginger, cinnamon, parsley and basil are also detoxifying. Broccoli In a single bite, broccoli contains 20 times more cancer-protecting substances and enzyme stimulants than any other vegetable. The stems have substances that attack the H. pylori, a bacteria that causes stomach irritation. These seeds protect liver cells from damage caused by alcohol and other products containing chemicals. Cabbage There are two potent detoxifying enzymes in the liver and cabbage has the ability to activate both. The “Plantago Psyllium” is an herb that is used as a laxative and possesses soluble fibers that remove toxins. It has a “cleanser” effect that goes from the liver to the colon. Fruits They posses vitamin C, fiber, water and nutrients, antioxidants and are detoxifying, almost all fruits are good but the pineapple and berries are especially beneficial for detox.

Paso #4

Step #4

To Good Health-Exercise

Your Health Insurance Policy More than 1/3 of adults in the U.S. are obese! Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer-- some of these leading causes of deaths can actually be prevented. Although many people don’t realize all the benefits, exercise may be your best health insurance policy. Many people exercise to prevent heart disease, but few know the role of exercise in the prevention of cancer. Most cancers are caused by environmental and lifestyle, not genes. Exercise also plays an important role in the prevention of colon cancer. Studies show that people who exercise have fifty percent lower risk of developing colon cancer compared with sedentary people. Exercise increases the frequency of bowel movements and this helps to eliminate toxins and carcinogens, which are cancer-causing factors. The decrease in body fat, insulin and other risk factors also contribute to a decrease in the chances of developing colon cancer.

Cardio when Fasting To achieve the greatest benefit to your workout and burn more fat, many experts recommend doing cardio in the morning while fasting. The secret is not to consume any calories or sugary drinks especially in the morning. You don’t deplete muscle mass if you do the cardio while fasting properly. Don’t wait more than 15 minutes from the time you wake up, don’t do high intensity, you should be able to hold a conversation, and it should not last more than 40 minutes. Just after training, have a protein for breakfast and a complex carb with low glycemic index. What you should never do is train with weights while fasting; to train you should eat protein and carbohydrates before. What happens when you eat before doing cardio is that much of the fat you’ll burn is just the same as you eat. By skipping this meal, your body will need to obtain energy from somewhere else and your body fat is what will be used as fuel. Advantage -Cardio performed in the morning can increase the amount of free fatty acids (FFA) to be used as fuel. -Cardio while fasting can lead to mobilization of fatty acids and increase insulin sensitivity. How Much Cardio? The American College of Sports Medicine has two basic recommendations for cardio exercise. The first suggests 30 minutes of moderate cardio five times per week, and the second recommends 20 minutes of intense cardio three times per week. People who are trying to lose weight and elevate their fitness levels may need to exceed the basic guidelines and lengthen the duration of each workout.

Are you considering a Tummy Tuck this year?

A

bdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a surgical procedure which Dr. Rotemberg performs to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen and tighten the abdominal muscles. Its primary focus is to design a tightened and re-contoured abdomen that eliminates bulky or pudgy stomach tissue. In addition to reshaping the appearance of the midsection, the abdominal muscles are tightened to a desirable structure that much more toned internally. How do I know if I need a tummy tuck or liposuction? If you have a protruding abdomen with excess fat and loose hanging skin, especially when you sit down, you are a candidate for an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. If you just have localized fat without hanging skin on your stomach, then liposuction may be all you need. Your board certified plastic surgeon can determine the best procedure for you during a physical examination. What are the differences in the types of abdominoplasty? There are three common types of abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure. 1. Standard or full abdominoplasty 2. Mini abdominoplasty 3. Extended abdominoplasty

They all involve removing the excess skin and fat from the abdomen and they may or may not involve tightening the abdominal muscles. With the mini abdominoplasty we just remove the excess skin in the lower abdomen without repositioning your umbilicus. A physical examination and discussion with your plastic surgeon will determine the best procedure for your body shape. How long and where is the incision for the tummy tuck? Usually the incision is a low transverse (horizontal) incision hidden in the bikini area. The length of the scar depends on the amount of excess skin the patient has and needs to be excised. What will it happen with my belly button after a tummy tuck? The umbilicus stay in the same place, we just make a new opening in the tightened skin to pull it through. How long is the procedure? The abdominoplasty surgery usually takes approximately 3 hours. You will stay in the recovery room another hour or two and then be discharged to home. What type of anestheisia do you use? General anesthesia is given by a board certified anesthesiologist.

How long is recovery? Most patients return to work after 2 weeks. If you have a desk job you may return to work sooner, depending on how you feel. No heavy, strenuous exercise for 6 weeks. Light exercise, such as walking can be restarted after 2 weeks. Please send us your questions to silvia@rotembergmd.com Your answers will be posted in the next edition.

Manifiesta tus Deseos en el 2015! ¿Has pensado cómo manifestar tus propósitos del Año Nuevo?

1) Comprométete a Descansar.

2015: An Opportunity to Manifest your Desires How will your 2015 resolutions actually materialize? Choices must have a purpose behind them, otherwise they can be easily replaced by any number of distractions. Making purposeful choices is a result of self-awareness and discipline. To help you achieve your resolutions for this New Year, I have three tips to share with you that will promote a state-of-mind capable of making and supporting the motivation to follow through on purposeful choices. 1) Recommit to quality rest. Your bedroom should serve only three purposes: i) sleep; ii) read; and iii) enjoyment of intimacy. A bedroom is not an entertainment center or a second home office. If you have a TV in your room, unplug it. Leave your computer elsewhere. Most of us need to be answering our alarm clock by 6:00 a.m. Adjust your evening routine such that your head is on the pillow no later than 10:30 p.m. 2) Try to limit red meat from your diet. I am not saying to give up meat unless you want to. If you are a routine meat eater, try changing your patterns to eating a steak every other week and ultimately, once a month. You will be amazed how quickly your body responds by feeling lighter and achieving better digestion. 3) Write down your dreams and desires. Take your time to think about what you truly want to accomplish this year. Make a list and write it down on a sheet of paper. Be clear and specific. Revisit your list periodically. Read it when you wake up and before going to bed. These simple tips can be a powerful resource to start manifesting the changes you want to see in your life. Good rest and lighter diet will actually influence the way you think and feel, helping you to focus on your goals. The act of writing will trigger the motion towards the materialization of your desires. Get ready for a prosperous, fulfilling and blissful 2015!

Omega 3: Great for your health but not all are made equal Most of you know about the benefits of Omega 3 oil: 1. Contains Vitamin D to help support bone, teeth health and a healthy immune system. 2. Supports normal lipid profiles already within normal range. 3. Supports the body’s natural inflammatory response function. 4. Fight Wrinkles: As we age, fat cells in our skin’s third layer thin out and tend to get bumpier; omega 3 helps make that layer thicker and smoother. 5. Protects vision. 6. Pumps the heart. 7. Boost the brain: In keeping your arteries clear, you are immediately improving brain function. It also alters your neurotransmitters to help reduce depression. 8. Enhance Fertility: in both males and female by improving sperm’s swimming ability and the environment for implantation in woman. 9. A pregnancy prerequisite: directly affect brain development making it crucial for expectant mothers because the DHA is important for proper fetal eye and brain development.

But be aware of the type of omega 3 that you are purchasing some can be very toxic and can even damage your organs. Open one omega 3 capsule and pour it over of a piece of styrofoam, if it makes a hole then you know what it can do to your organs. Also keep in mind: -It’s vulnerability to rancidity; Standard Process brand (SP) takes steps to ensure protection of its fish oils including a dark bottle and thick, small, dark pearls. -The source for fish oils are often contaminated with some degree of Mercury or other heavy metal poison; (SP) brand chemically assess every batch and guarantees less than one part per billion of Mercury. -Many fish oil products contain a non-standardized combination of fish that can lead to fluctuations in the Omega-3 content; (SP) always uses Atlantic Blue fin Tuna for its sustainability and safety. -The amount of HDL should be 600. I wish all of you a healthy and lovely journey.

Dental Implants or bridge? Once teeth have been lost, there are basically three ways to restore them: 1) With a bridge, 2) with implants and crowns over implants, 3) with a partial or complete denture. A dental implant is an “artificial tooth root” that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for young people and patients in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth and don’t want to wear a removable partial. The “metal root” provides support for the new implant supported crown without having to grind or reduce the neighboring teeth. This is the most important difference between a conventional bridge and an implant restoration. When a bridge is made, the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth have to be prepared or reduced. This means that if you are missing one tooth, we need to fabricate a three-unit bridge (3 teeth joined): The missing tooth is connected to the two on each end. If these teeth already have crowns or are severely broken, it’s not a big deal since those teeth need crowns anyways. But, if you have perfectly good healthy teeth next to a missing tooth, then it’s a shame to

have to grind the good teeth in order to make a bridge. In this case, a dental implant is the best option because these healthy teeth are not affected at all. Dental implants feel just like a “normal” tooth because you recover the “biting sensation”, you can floss between your teeth, it looks very natural and, since it’s an “artificial tooth” it will never get a cavity! A single implant can be more esthetic and easier to keep clean than a bridge. Gums can recede around a bridge, leaving a visible defect when the metal base or collar of the bridge becomes exposed. Also, the cement holding the bridge in place can dissolve, allowing bacteria to decay the teeth that anchor the bridge needing to replace the entire bridge. Implants can also be used in the case of patients with lose dentures (especially the lower denture). A few dental implants can provide the anchor and retention needed to maintain the denture in place without having to use the denture glue and avoiding embarrassing situations in public. Our practice focuses on prevention and patient education. For further questions, you can contact me at 954-983-3992 or www. hollywoodsmilesfl.com.

HOLA LATINOS P.46 Salud Health

Tratamiento con plasma rico en plaquetas (prp)

L

Resolution to a Healthier You By: Rosario Sabogal, Beauty of Wax, Hollywood

You have enjoyed great company and food over the holidays, now it is time to get back on track, with recharged batteries and probably a list of New Year’s resolutions to accomplish, most of them related to healthier habits or losing weight. The question is: are you committed to your resolutions? Because it all starts with realizing that you need to make changes to make them happen. If sporting a leaner, healthier body this 2015, is one of your resolutions, you do not need to starve or work out until you pass out, all it takes is little targeted changes in different bases that should be covered. Life is not rigid, and neither should your diet be. The truth is we are so adjusted to not eating what our bodies need to be fueled that eating fresh and natural may sound hard to accomplish, especially if you are used to a high intake of sugar and carbs. They don’t only make us gain weight, but also give us cravings for more sugar and carbs, and make healthy food less attractive for us. The best way to start changing your habits is by increasing your water intake, this will flush the unwanted “storage” and add moisture to every cell, making them run smoother and function better. Second, you should increase your fruit and veggie intake, you should replace all carbs and sugars, but adding them, or increasing their consumption. Last, and very important, workout, you do not need to pass out at the gym, take a good walk on the beach, swim, jump, enjoy a nice outdoors activity at least 3 times a week, do it at your convenience, but do it!

Mara PRADA Touring the World

with her “Crazy Love” for Zumba By: Nancy Esteves The Zumba Fitness Movement craze has some 14 million people in 185 countries on the bandwagon to get in shape. What’s made it so popular -- it’s a great endorphin building workout, heavy on Latin moves, with great Latin-inspired music and burns lots of calories. If you’ve ever taken a Zumba class, it feels like a party. From video games to world tours, Zumba has come to the Latin music industry as a new platform enticing artists like Pitbull, Daddy Yankee and Don Omar to make hit songs about the theme. Rising to fame in the Zumba Fitness Concert world is Colombian singer and dancer Mara Prada who has people all over the world dancing to her hit tunes “Crazy Love” which features Beto Perez, one of the founders of Zumba Fitness and “Oye,” her first hit single released in 2010. Her music is upbeat and created for dance and has become the perfect fit for the Zumba revolution. Mara arrived to the Miami music scene in 2011. Her song, “OYE” gained her celebrity status in the local Latino community. Mara will be performing next month in Broward county during a Zumba Fitness Dance concert. Exclusive Interview with Mara Prada: You kicked off your career in the reality show “Pop Stars.” Why did you switch from acting? ... “Music and dance were really my first love in the arts ... I started from scratch and my goal was to create songs and dreamed that my music would be listened worldwide, and today, after almost 10 years, it’s happening, thanks to the whole Zumba community who welcomed my music in an incredible way in 182 countries.” - Besides being a singer, you’re a great dancer, how did you learn to dance so well? “Dancing has been one of my passions since I was very young.” (Mara was a cheerleader, took ballet classes and jazz classes and belonged to a dance group in Colombia for three years. She says she never missed Rumba classes at the Bogota Gyms). - You shared the stage with Pitbull and Daddy Yankee. Tell us about that experience with these two Latin idols. “Yes, it was a great experience to share the stage with these big artists and it was also part of my personal dreams that are being fulfilled… and that teach you why they have their well-earned positions.” You have many fans. How many views do you have on YouTube so far? and followers? “This is one of the nicest things about this career…all the people you meet and connect with in a special way ... More than 14 million people of many races and ages have danced and sang my songs around the world in their Zumba classes ... My videos have over 10 million visits and there are many that follow me on my social media networks every day, but I don’t see them as distant fans ... When

I have the chance, I enjoy interacting with people ... I wish I could do this with everyone.” What is the magic of Zumba? Do you think it is therapeutic? Absolutely, more than anything it’s therapy for happiness. When you are dancing with others and sharing the joy that it causes ... and if you lose weight—it’s phenomenal ... Since immemorial times this was practiced by the tribes… Dancing together with the music we love generates endorphins, which are happiness hormones--this is the magic. Besides getting in shape do you think Zumba is good for the mind? “Totally, you leave this experience destressed and what I have also noticed is that it increases self-esteem in many people because dancing generates a special connection with ourself , a liberating feeling that makes you feel more secure and at ease with yourself, and you make many friends with whom you already have an affinity with.” Do you think that Zumba Fitness has had an influence on Latin music? “Definitely; this movement was named by Billboard as the new musical platform and is something that I have found during this road I’ve traveled next to them over the years, and have seen how many of my songs have become successful through this movement”. -What’s the name of the new Zumba video where you sing? “Our latest song is called ‘Super Girls’ produced by my producer and fellow Colombian partner Robert Taylor. This song is about empowering women, I perform it with Zumba instructor/ singer Michelle Gutty and Beto Perez. We recorded the music video in Chile under the direction of Marcelo Borlando. We just did a Fitness Concert for more than 10 thousand people in Santiago, Chile being the largest fitness concert in which I performed ... That night in Chile will be unforgettable for me and I know that for many who lived it with us.” What are your plans for 2015 with the Zumba Fitness Movement? “New Songs, concerts and more and more people from different audiences to connect with my music. I will perform in a series of Fitness Dance Concerts alongside Zumba instructors through a contest where they can be live on stage with me. The concert is an interactive experience where you can watch the show and are part of it, a kind of a big Zumba class where we are singing and dancing together with the audience. This is one of the experiences that exists during the Zumba conventions and is usually reserved for instructors but I wanted to live it with the audience too.” Mara will be performing this coming February 20th at the Miramar Cultural Center. 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar, FL 33025.
