How to study

The Swedish Way Studying in Sweden might differ from studying in your home country. We know that there are some cultural differences that are good to prepare for prior to your stay here in Sweden in order to succeed in your studies.

Self-studies

In Sweden you are in charge of your own studies to a large extent. As a full-time student, we expect you to spend 40 hours per week studying. Not all of this time will be spent in class with a teacher, you also need to prepare for a lot of self-studies. We advice you to make study groups together with your classmates.

Teamwork

Working together with classmates from different cultures to solve a task or writing a paper is a part of your academic studies in Sweden. This might be challenging at times but will be a valuable experience when building your career.

Academic Writing

In Sweden, we have set rules on how to write academic papers, where it is specifically important

to reference your sources of information in a correct way. When using another author’s text, this needs to be either rephrased or put in qoutation marks. This way of writing can be quite complex in the beginning and we advise you to take time to understand the system correctly at an early stage in your study period. If you need support with your academic writing, get in touch with nicholas.lloyd-pugh@hh.se to book a meeting.

an important role in the academic world, where discussions are encouraged. Don’t be surprised if the teacher asks you about your opinion during class as this is a way of involving the students and develop critical thinking.

Equality and Critical Thinking

Sweden is founded on democracy where everyone has the same right to give their opinion. This principle is present in all parts of the society and plays

The Swedish Grading System The Swedish system of credits is in accordance with the European standards for higher education, where one year of full-time studies equals 60 higher education points. At Halmstad University, one of the following grading systems with their respective gradings may be used: • Fail or Pass • Fail, Pass or Pass with credit • Fail, Three (3), Four (4) or Five (5) • Goal-related scale, divided into seven degrees (A, B, C, D, E, FX, F) The grading system used in the course is stated in the syllabus.

We do not use ETCS grades. Every faculty give grades according to their their local grading scale, but international students can ask to include the ETCS grading table (EGT) in their transcript of records in order for other universities to be able to compare these grades to their systems. EGT is only applicable for course that has been given from more than 2 years.

Examination opportunities If you fail an examination, you are entitled to retake the exam at a later date. Retakes may be done no sooner than two weeks after the results of the original exam have been given. You as a student have the opportunity to retake the examination twice. If you require more than two retakes, you must be prepared that the course syllabus may have changed. This applies regardless of whether or not you have used all two retakes. The teacher responsible for the course, however, has the right to give an extra examination opportunity if there are special reasons and the examiner gives his or her approval. If you have failed an exam twice for a course or a module of a course, you have the right to have another examiner appointed unless special reasons are given. Such a request is made to the relevant Dean of School. You are not allowed to retake an examination that you have already passed.

You NEED to apply for study break or interruption of studies If you, due to special circumstances, need to take a break from your studies, you must apply for leave of absence from studies. If you do not intend to continue your studies you must apply for interruption of studies. If you fail to do so you we can not guarantee that you can continue your studies at a later stage. Read more about this topic at hh.se

You can influence your studies A good start to influence your studies and everything around it is by becoming a member of the Student Union, which primary task is to monitor the education and promote the student’s situation. Read more about The Student Union on page 15. As an international student it is not only a great way to influence your current studies, but also a good chance to get connected to other dedicated students. An important tool to improve your studies is the course evaluation that you and your class mates fill out after each completed course. The course evaluations are used as a base for the Student Union and Student Representatives during negotiations with Halmstad University.

Be aware of plagiarism Plagiarism means using another author’s language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions and then presenting them as one’s own original work. As a student it is important to be aware of the rules around plagiarism in order to succeed, as this dishonesty can have severe consequences. All cheating will be reported. Read more about plagiarism at at hh.se or talk to your teacher to get more information.

Influence through the Student Union There are several things students can influence during their time at Halmstad University. The quality of the education, the design of the study environment, the completion time for an exam, the study social activities or contact with the business community. But how do you go about it and where do you turn?

Union is working daily with influencing the University to promote the student’s study situation. The union is also active in student politics, which deals with influencing politicians and the business community. One important subject in these discussions is the accommodation situation, where the main goal is to increase the number of apartments available for students. Another important task is to work towards stronger student rights when it comes to security and welfare systems.

One way of influencing your studies is through the University Student Union. A student union’s primary task is to monitor the education and promote the student’s situation.

Through the different bodies of the Student Union, students work to create a meaningful everyday life for themselves and their study colleagues by making sure the various processes work efficiently and that events and activities are organised around Campus.

Do you balance your studies? Structure and planning A good piece of advice to avoid postponing things is to do your own study plan. Do not try to have everything in your head, but use a calendar to get an overview and control over your life. Start by writing down lecture times and other scheduled activities. Continue by booking your own study time and keep in mind that full-time studies are the equivalent of a 40-hour working week.

Handle stress and worry When our bodies are exposed to challenges, stress hormons are released in order to make us focused and ready to perform. However, if you experience negative stress which is disturbing your studies, it may be good to learn some stress management technique or relaxation exercises.

The Student Healthcare Centre can offer you tips and advice. Acquiring good study technique can also help reduce stress.

Don’t forget to socialise In order to succeed in your studies, it is important to feel at ease with your lifestyle in general. Moving to a new country requires a lot of effort in terms of building up a social network. When being a student, there are many opportunities to make new friends and we advise you to take the chance to get to know your class mates as soon as possible. Sharing experiences, studying together and socialising during weekends and breaks often has a positive effect on both the study results and overall health condition.
