Do you balance your studies? Structure and planning A good piece of advice to avoid postponing things is to do your own study plan. Do not try to have everything in your head, but use a calendar to get an overview and control over your life. Start by writing down lecture times and other scheduled activities. Continue by booking your own study time and keep in mind that full-time studies are the equivalent of a 40-hour working week.

Handle stress and worry Stress is a way to make us prepared. However, if you become so stressed that you are having a hard time performing, it may be good to learn some kind of stress management technique or relaxation exercises. The Student Healthcare Centre can offer you tips and advice. Acquiring good study technique can also help reduce stress. If you are having trouble understanding everything in class, socialising and studying together with others could help you keep up better and learn more.

Study and career counselling The easiest way to book a personal meeting with a study and career counsellor is by sending an email to studievagledning@hh.se or via the Service Center. You will find the study and career counsellors at Student Support, located on the second floor in B Building.

Learning support Do you have a disability that constitutes an obstacle in your studies? If so, you can get support. Examples of support available are the following: extra hours for writing, your own room and the possibility to write on a computer when taking an examination, extended submission times, help with reading literature, and alternative forms of examinations, mentoring, physical adaptations of study environments as well as support with taking notes. how do you influence your studies? There are several things a student can and wants to influence during his or her study time at Halmstad University. The quality of the education, the design of the study environment, the University library’s study environment, the completion time for an exam, study social activities to do in addition to the studies or contact with the business community. But how do you go about it and where do you turn? One way of influencing all parts of your study time is through the University Student Union. A student union’s primary task is education monitoring and to promote the student’s situation. According to the Higher Education Ordinance (a super important document that the country’s colleges and universities must follow), a student union shall ”have the purpose of promoting members’ studies and what is related to the studies”. Halmstad Student Union is divided into two main areas. One focuses on education and motivation work and the other focuses on study-social activities. Educational surveillance is about ensuring that all education is of good quality, that laws and regulations are followed, and that students gain influence over their education. The Student Union is working daily with influencing the University to promote the student’s study situation. The union is also heard through student politics, which deals with an influencing politicians and business, for example, to build more student accommodation and to have access to the same security and welfare systems as those in the workplace. The study-social activity is about organising various social activities, but also ensuring that everything around the campus works. Through the different bodies of the Student Union, students work to create a meaningful everyday life for themselves and their study colleagues. Our student union is built up of students for students, which makes it our own to determine how we want to influence both education and everyday life to be as rich as possible during our study time. The best thing we can do is to make our voices heard. Together we make Halmstad University a better university. Hanne Göransson Chairman Halmstad Student Union

what rights do you have? As a student at Halmstad University you have the right to influence your studies. Are you experiencing a problem regarding your education or study situation? If so, here you can find out who to turn to, and examples of your rights and obligations while at the University. An important tool that shows what Halmstad University can do to improve is the course evaluation that students fill out after each completed course. The course evaluations are then used as a base for the student union and student representatives during negotiations with Halmstad University. Below are some common questions and answers asked by students.

How long does my teacher have to grade my examination paper? An examination result must be given no later than three weeks after the time of the examination; however, no later than two weeks before the retake date. Three weeks always implies at least 15 working days (the first working day being the first working day after the exam). Your results can be seen in Student Ladok. You can pick up your exam from the Service Center as early as two days after the results have been announced, but no later than two years after the results have been announced. Keep in mind that you cannot request a change of grading after you have collected your exam papers.

Exam

s

12

What happens if the teacher changes the schedule? Schedules should be ready no later than four weeks before the start of the course. Compulsory elements must be made clear in the schedule and in accordance with the syllabus. Compulsory elements may not change dates during the course, but the teacher is entitled to move individual lectures.

What happens if I am not satisfied with my grade? A grade can never be questioned according to the Higher Education Act. However, if a decision concerning a grade contains an obvious error due to a clerical error, miscalculation or something similar, the decision may be changed by the examiner. This can both be beneficial or detrimental to the student. Should a grade be lowered, the student should be given the opportunity to comment on the decision. A good idea is to have a copy of your exam, as any irregularity is easier to detect if the original is not acknowledged.

How many examination opportunities do I have? If you fail an examination, you are entitled to retake the exam at a later date. Retakes may be done no sooner than two weeks after the results of the original exam have been given. You as a student have the opportunity to retake the examination twice. If you require more than two retakes, you must be prepared for the course syllabus maybe having changed. This applies regardless of whether or not you have used all three retakes. The teacher responsible for the course, however, has the right to give an extra examination opportunity if there are special reasons and the examiner gives his or her approval. If you have failed an exam twice for a course or a module of a course, you have the right to have another examiner appointed unless special reasons are given. Such a request is made to the relevant Dean of School. You are not allowed to retake an examination that you have already passed.

Problems? Follow these 3 simple steps

Tips from students

Don’t think negatively about yourself. It is a new environment, new people, new life and new language and it can be difficult but the students here are very helpful.

1. Speak to the teacher it concerns.

Always start with talking with the teacher or course coordinator about the problem. This usually resolves most problems.

2. Contact the course coordinator or education director.

If it does not work to speak with the lecturer it concerns, or if the lecturer him-/herself is the problem, contact the course coordinator or the School’s head of department.

3. Contact the student/PhD representative. If neither of the two steps above help or if you do not want to contact the course coordinator yourself you can contact the student/PhD representatives/ombudsman.

Yutong Zhang, China, Master’s Programme in Industrial Management and Innovation

If you don’t understand during class, you can ask for private time and get help which I have personally gotten. I also really enjoyed, and will not forget, the reception I got from the Student Union when I was a newcomer. Kapira Elvanus,Tanzania, Master’s Programme in Applied Environmental Science

The courses are very flexibly organised as some classes are optional and we can discuss amongst ourselves when to meet and work during group assignments. The teachers also try to help us find a balance between the studies and daily life as we are international students. We also help the students with copying and printing at the caretakers’ office, which is found in Q Building, and is open between 08.00 and 12.00. Do you have any tips for the students? – Please do not hesitate to contact us if something needs to be fixed. You can easily reach us via helpdesk.hh.se. Furthermore, I also want to say that having been a student myself, I know how important it is to do other things beside studying, for example to join a student club or association, work out or get involved in something else. It is important to live the student life and not only study!

Annalena Stenljung, Student Support. How do you help the students? – Students can book a time with me for individual study guidance talks if they have thoughts and queries concerning their studies. They can get help planning their studies or their post-study period, i.e. to know what they can work with in the future. We talk a lot about seeing possibilities and opportunities, and daring to trust their own gut feelings. We try to help and coach the students to focus on something they are interested in. Do you have any tips for the students? – My tip is to have a goal with your studies, to find the right motivation. Dare to do what you think is most interesting and give it your best during time of study. Try to make use of all the contacts that are made in connection with your project work and collaborations. They may be useful in the future.

Annika Strandell, Stefan Hallstedt, Anette Andreasson and Ingrid Fristrand, Student Affairs. How do you help the students? – We issue degree certificates, course certificates and deal with the recognition of both Swedish and foreign courses for the entire University. Do you have any tips for the students? – Applications for degree/course certificates are made via Student Ladok or by filling in a form. Keep in mind that all modules/courses must be completed and registered in Student Ladok before you submit your application. If you have other questions or queries, please feel free to contact us via Helpdesk. Rebecca Rosenberg, Students Affairs. How do you help the students? – I work with exchange studies, i.e. students that visit us, and those that we send away. We provide information about the opportunities for studies abroad and we have contact with the student and partner university to support the process when the student is away. We also handle insurance issues for both outgoing and incoming students. Do you have any tips for the students? – Do not be afraid to ask if there is something that is unclear. Service Center is for the students and they are happy to help. I would also encourage all incoming students to take the opportunity to see more of Halmstad as well as the rest of Sweden while they are here. There is a lot to learn outside of the classroom.

Stig Perttu, Students Affairs. How do you help the students? – I work with recruitment mainly of international students, by marketing our programmes and university abroad, and admissions. My colleagues and I also assist applicants who are required to pay tuition fees in matters regarding payment, visas, scholarships and subsistence. Do you have any tips for the students? – Focus on your studies. It’s a big change to start studying in a new country in a different study environment. Wait until you have started studying before searching for a part-time job or it may negatively affect your studies. Do not hesitate to contact your teacher if you have questions about your education or Service Center in other matters. It’s our job to help you!
