How to Homestead your Current Room DIVISION OF STUDENT ENROLLMENT, ENGAGEMENT, AND SUCCESS RESIDENCE LIFE

Check List Prior to Participating in the Homesteading Process • Complete and Submit an updated housing application for Fall 2024. • Create my roommate group if living in a multi-occupancy room. • Ensure my requested roommate has submitted their application and accepted my roommate request. • Log back into my housing application when the homesteading process begins to homestead my space.

Can my room be HOMESTEAD? • Current students living on campus during the Spring semester are eligible to HOMESTEAD the space in their room for the next academic year with the exception of students residing in: • First-Year only buildings: Netherlands Complex and Stuyvesant Hall. • Rooms designated for First-Year students in the High rise buildings. • Rooms and/or buildings that cannot be homestead due to scheduled renovation/capacity changes or other reasons as outlined by the Office of Residence Life. • Students are notified in advance via email from the Office of Residence Life if their current room is not eligible to be homestead.

If I Homestead my room, will I automatically keep my roommates and suitemates?

• If a student homesteads their own space within their room, it DOES NOT mean they will automatically keep their roommates and suitemates. • If only one roommate homesteads their space within their room, then ONLY that student will reserve a spot in that room for the upcoming academic year. • Students can ONLY Homestead their OWN space in the room they are assigned to OR they can Homestead their OWN space AND their current roommates space IF they form a roommate group. • If a student lives in suite style housing, they CANNOT homestead their suitemates room. Their suitemates will need to either each homestead their own space within their room OR homestead their own space and their current roommates space(if they are in a roommate group). • IF ALL current roommates and suitemates homestead their own space within their room or suite they will remain roommates and suitemates for the upcoming academic year. All spaces in rooms that are not homestead, will be made available for ANYONE to select during the General Room Selection Process.

Pull-In Process • If a student is aware that there will be a vacancy in their room for the upcoming year, they will have the opportunity to “pull-in” another student that they are not currently roommates with. • In order to “pull-in” a roommate, an available space MUST exist in the room. • The student being “pulled-in” must have a completed Housing Application AND have accepted the roommate request/invite from the student who is “pulling” them in prior to this process. • Commuting, Study Abroad and New Students can be pulled-in to open spaces as long as they have: • Paid the required $300 Housing Deposit and an Enrollment fee if new to Hofstra. • Have completed a Housing Application and accepted a roommate request.
