GURUMBÉ, AFRO-ANDALUSIAN MEMORIES
Film Screening and Discussion Organized by the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures The screening of this documentary will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, Miguel Angel Rosales. Gurumbé, Afro-Andalusian Memories, Spain/Mexico/Portugal/Senegal, 2016, Documentary, 72 min, Spanish with English subtitles Today Europe’s southern borders are shielded with barbed wire and fences. But once, a trade flourished there that forcibly kidnapped thousands of African men and women into exile and exploitation. Giving voice to its Afro Andalusian memories, Gurumbé leads us to question Spanish identity, reminding us that África is weaved into its fabric. Join us after the screening for the filmmaker's talk: "Submerged Stories" The history of Spain has been built on the concealment of colonial violence and the disappearance of its racialized minorities. The Afrodescendant minority has suffered the most profound erasure. What consequences has this had on current Spanish society, how has it influenced its most recent history, and how does it continue to articulate political discourses on identity and the nation?
