MICHAEL HACKER, Ph. D. michael.hacker@hofstra.edu Michael Hacker is Co-director of the Center for STEM Research (CSR) at Hofstra University in New York. Since 1997, he has served as PI or CoPI on 14 large-scale National Science Foundation (NSF) projects focused on improving teaching and learning in K-16 STEM education. Total funding received by the CSR exceeds $35M. Hacker previously served as a secondary school classroom teacher, department supervisor, and university teacher educator. As a former New York State Education Department (NYSED) Supervisor for Technology Education, he co-managed the development of the New York State Standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology, led the development of the NYS middle school Introduction to Technology syllabus, and initiated and managed the development of the state’s Principles of Engineering high school curriculum. Since 1964, technology and engineering education (T&E) has been at the core of his professional life. Hacker attended public schools in New York City, was graduated from Stuyvesant High School, received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and administrative certification from the City College of New York, and received his Ph.D. in Science and Technology Education from Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Israel. He is a member of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) Academy of Fellows, and is an ITEEA Distinguished Technology Educator (DTE). He was presented with the following ITEEA honors: Award of Distinction, State Supervisor of the Year, Outstanding Technology Educator, Outstanding Scholarly Publication, and Outstanding Research Award. He received the Epsilon Pi Tau Distinguished Service Citation and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics (IEEE) Engineers Mathematics and Science Education Award. He served as a member of the writing team that developed the U.S. national Standards for Technological Literacy. He has co-authored six secondary school textbooks, written many refereed journal articles, coedited several scholarly compendia and sets of international conference proceedings, served repeatedly as an NSF expert panel reviewer, and has made dozens of presentations including numerous keynotes at state, national, and international STEM conferences. Hacker’s primary research interests are focused on Technology and Engineering education reform, improving engineering design pedagogy, investigating the mathematics actually needed by technicians in STEM industries, and in using socially authentic contexts for STEM teaching and learning
