A Childhood Experience of a Japanese Internment Camp: Tom Hasegawa’s Journeys to Tule Lake, Chicago and Long Island Tuesday, March 8, 2022 4:20-5:45 p.m.
Virtual Event
Tom Hasegawa was born in Los Angeles in 1938. The issuance of Executive Order 9066 by President Roosevelt after the onset of the Pacific War led to the loss of a thriving restaurant business in Little Tokyo that the Hasegawa family was running and the whole family was forcibly relocated in the Tule Lake internment camp in northern California. In this event, he will talk about his youthful days in the camp and the family’s journey to the mid-West and eventually to Long Island. Tom Hasegawa received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago, majoring in Biology. After graduating college, he took a teaching job at a high school on Long Island. He has given many talks on his days in the Tule Lake camp and his experiences in Chicago after the end of World War II for various organizations and schools.
Presented by the Department of History, Hofstra Asian Studies Program and the Hofstra Cultural Center.
