BLAZING THEIR OWN TRAILS WITH APPRENTICESHIPS Matt Foster our Digital Marketing Apprentice over at Head Office offered up his reasoning behind choosing the apprenticeship route over the more traditional university pathway to kick start his career.

We caught up with two of our Certificate in Assessing Vocal Achievement learners, Kayleigh Hubbard and Isabel Twombley (pictured right) who were both former learners with us and are now training to become qualified assessors with a view to give something back to the next generation of apprentices.

New Barbering Course Creating a Buzz in Rugby

Editorial Image of Billy Huxley to launch the new SEB MAN professional range from Sebastian We are so excited to announce the launch of a new full time barbering study programme scheduled for delivery in Rugby this summer!

Plans are well underway to create a traditional Barber Shop set up on the first floor of our Rugby Training Centre. The Barber Shop will be kitted out with the latest barbering equipment to include its own separate backwash stations, specialist barbering chairs and all the associated traditional shaving equipment to include brushes, razors and towels and stocking Sebastian Professional Seb Man products.

We took the decision to offer barbering as a full time course as the popularity of this qualification is showing no signs of stopping, with more and more salons looking to add barbering services to their existing male grooming offer but we were unable to deliver workplace training in salons that didn’t have professional barbers’ chairs as this is an essential part of the qualification. The new Barber Shop in Rugby will therefore also be able to offer day release apprenticeship training to those who were previously unable to sign up to this qualification due to not having access to train using a traditional barbering chair.

The course itself will typically last 12 months and learners will be able to join at any time throughout the year from August 2019 onwards and will be expected to attend the training centre 3 days a week on average. The course will cover a range of mandatory and optional units to include: • • • •

Cut men’s hair using basic techniques Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques Dry and finish men’s hair Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Leila Pearce Master Colour Expert Leila Pearce has 22 years’ worth of hairdressing experience, she joined Heart of England Training as a Hairdressing Trainer/Assessor back in 1999 after qualifying in Georgia before moving to the UK to work in a small salon in Sutton.

Her passion and creativity is highly contagious and she finds educating the future stylists of tomorrow hugely rewarding.

We caught up with Leila shortly after she completed her biggest career challenge to date, the Wella Master Colour Expert degree…

“The biggest challenge I have taken on in my career so far was definitely the Wella Master Colour Expert degree. I have always been interested in the science behind colours and when this opportunity popped up, I simply had to take it! My colour knowledge and creativity really expanded after I started this this degree and I was fortunate enough to work alongside some of the biggest hairdressing stars during my studies like the Vidal Sassoon academy and many more."

During the course, I gained so many new skills and met some truly inspiring people that I will never forget. I explored the full range of Wella colours, learning how to achieve the best results with even the most difficult of colour corrections whilst using the latest techniques and recipes. I also learnt about hair, scalp and colour science including tackling a head block challenge to become a Master Colour Expert as part of the final exam. As a Master Colour Expert, I will receive ongoing support from Wella and an annual invitation to their Master Colour Congress events.

I have already begun to apply the knowledge I gained during my degree into my teaching by sharing what I have learnt with my learners, and I focus on expanding their knowledge about the science of hair as well as imparting tips and tricks on how to master technical cuts and finishes.”

Leila is already looking at continuing her own education with Wella’s ‘Sexy Science’ course which includes in depth detail on the science behind creating colours and how different hair types behave.

Celebrating Leicestershire's Best!

The Leicester Employment Hub Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony celebrates the achievements of all Leicester and Leicestershire based apprentices.

This years' ceremony will be held on 28th June 2019 at the impressive De Montfort Hall. It is open to any apprentice who has completed, or will complete their apprenticeship before 1st June 2019 which means that this year anyone who has completed an apprenticeship within the county is eligible to attend.

The ceremony will feature entertainment and the chance to step up on stage to be recognised as a graduate. Friends, family and local businesses will also be present at the event.

We would like to encourage all eligible apprentices, their friends and family, and of course their employers to get involved and show their support for this initiative and all the Leicester based graduands who have successfully achieved their apprenticeship in but haven’t yet had the opportunity to celebrate their achievement at a formal graduation ceremony.

We would really like to see as many of our achievers as possible at the event, tickets are £25 and cover hire of cap and gown, souvenir programme, certificate and a complimentary drink. To book your place, please visit www.yourgraduation.co.uk/lagc.

Spotlight on Schools Qualifications We have recently added two new qualifications to our existing schools offer... We are now delivering School Business Professional at Level 4 and Learning Mentor at Level 3.

School Business Professionals (SBPs) perform a role which is unique to schools, administering and managing the financial, site and support services within the school context. Often known as Bursars or Finance Directors they provide essential support to school leadership teams, implementing and supporting both financial and strategic business decisions.

Mentoring is and has been for centuries the foundation of vocational training and apprenticeships, yet this standard is the first formal recognition of this role. Nowadays, mentoring takes place in all parts of the Education and Training Sector (ETS). Learning Mentors support learners of all ages and levels to develop within their role. These two new apprenticeship standards are offered alongside our current suite of schools based qualifications which includes Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools and P.E in School Sports at Level 2 & 3 and Facilities Services at Level 2.

We are already delivering a number of qualifications in maintained schools and multi academy trusts and are an approved training provider for a number of LEAs across the Midlands, including Warwickshire County Council, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Northampton County Council, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

Climbing to the Top of the Ladder!

We are proud to be an approved partner for the Ladder for greater Birmingham and Solihull initiative which is part of the larger National Ladder network and forms part of their wider campaign to create 10,000 apprenticeships across the country and has received some high-profile backing, including that from HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York who hails the programme as a ‘local solution to a national problem’. The programme has already enjoyed success across Staffordshire and the Black Country before being extended to Birmingham and Solihull.

With over 250,000 businesses across the UK currently employing an apprentice, it’s easy to see why the majority of these report an increase in productivity, performance and staff engagement.

By training and developing their skills from day one to enhance their businesses, they enable employers to fill the skills gaps that exist within their current workforce.

We were thrilled to find out we hold the title of signing up the 200th apprentice for the greater Birmingham area this year, which was completed in February for our learner Niamh who is undertaking a Hairdressing apprenticeship at Aesthetics.

Sarah Bowron, owner and director of Aesthetics talked us through the reasons she relies on apprentices to grow her business. Sarah trained as a hairdresser at a college and soon realised that the real training began once you started working in a salon.

She opened Aesthetics in Solihull in May 2000 and has more recently opened a second salon in Henley-in-Arden and employs 30 creative team members across the two sites.

"We started taking on apprentices from day one and we have been working with Heart of England Training for over 15 years now. Both salons I had previously worked at had always 'grown their own talent' and as we have such specific ways of cutting & colouring, we knew it was the only way forward to ensure our brand integrity."

In February this year Sarah took on two new apprentices for her Solihull Salon, one of which was the 200th apprentice for the area! "Niamh applied for an Apprenticeship with us due to a relative already working at Aesthetics. She'd heard good things and her family were supportive of her decision, she went through a formal interview, just the same as all the other applicants. Beth heard about the vacancy online and was offered the post, again, after a formal interview. When I interview someone I want to see a positive, can do attitude and a genuine passion for our industry. We can teach the rest but that inner core has to be there."

She added "We always take on 2-4 Apprentices each year, it's how we grow our business and is essential to support our team. Niamh and Beth chose apprenticeships rather than college for a variety of reasons, but the two main ones were to earn while they learn and to work at Aesthetics."

Speaking about the benefits of apprenticeships Sarah stated: "As a way of preserving your brand and ensuring continuity, apprenticeships are the logical way forward. By investing your time and energy at an early stage you reap the rewards later on."

She added: "From an Apprentice's view point; choose the company you want to work with long term & that have an excellent reputation both as a business & for training. It'll be the best two years you invest in your career and a well trodden path into a business that may not be open to you by going to college."

To raise the profile of apprenticeships The Ladder has partnered with Birmingham Live to create the very first Apprenticeship Awards for the area, the ceremony will be held on 4th July 2019 at Edgbaston Cricket ground and will bring together apprentices and employers from across the region to showcase and celebrate their achievements and successes.

Apprenticeship Minimum Wage All employers are reminded that the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage increased on 1st April 2019 to ÂŁ3.90 per hour for apprentices in their first year of their apprenticeship training. Apprentices who are in their second year of training and aged 19+ would be eligible for the minimum wage based on their age.

City Looks looking good Shifa Ikleriya joined us at the age of 16 for a two week work experience stint at our former Leicester Training Centre before signing up to our hairdressing full time course, fast forward a few years and she is now a multi award winning salon owner and entrepreneur who continues to grow her business.

We visited Shifa, at her newly relocated City Looks salon on St Saviours Road, Leicester to find out more about her journey to becoming one of Leicester’s most successful businesswomen…

After qualifying as a hairdresser with us in her teens, Shifa opened her first salon, Perfection, at the age of 21 and steadily built up her female only client base over 8 years before taking a 5 year career break to start her family, with her husband whom she met during her hairdressing course!

Once her children were all in school Shifa decided to get back behind the chair and go mobile, she sent messages to her former clients to let them know she would be offering mobile hairdressing services around the area, the response was phenomenal. So much so that she went on to open her own salon, City Looks in East Park Road and grew her team to include self-employed stylists and beauty therapists as well as taking on a new apprentice each year to support the business as well as launching her own haircare brand tailored specifically towards Asian hair.

Shifa’s success has been recognised with a string of awards, most recently she was awarded a Dare to Dream Women in Business Award and came second in the UK Hair & Beauty Awards for the best salon in Leicester.

Speaking about her journey, she recalls overcoming various obstacles and pushing boundaries to get to where she is now: “My parent’s originally weren’t keen on the idea of me studying hairdressing, they would have preferred me to go down the more traditional academic route but once they saw how passionate I was about the industry they supported me fully in my decision.”

She added “I found that being from an Asian community there were other factors to consider, for example offering female only services throughout Monday to Saturday and offering male barbering services on a Sunday.”

Looking to the future she commented: “I am continuing to focus on growing my business both in terms of the services offered as well as encouraging a culturally diverse workforce as I appreciate the benefit that this can bring. Apprentices have been a key way for me to achieve growth and I take on one apprentice at a time year on year which enables me to really focus on their progress and the majority of my apprentices will then go on to stay with me once qualified. The best piece of advice I can offer to young apprentices starting out is to simply be yourself and you will find your place.”

Speaking of the quality of the training received, she simply smiled and said: “I wouldn’t use anyone but Heart of England Training as my training provider...”
