TRAINING NEWS Spring 2018
APPRENTICESHIPS WORK FOR EVERYONE! National Apprenticeship Week 2018 was held on 5th-9th March and once more brought together apprentices, employers and training providers from across the country to celebrate the success of apprenticeships for both individuals and businesses. Heart of England Training joined the movement by attending a number of outreach events, including school assemblies, careers fairs and dedicated apprenticeship events across the midlands to promote the benefits and value of apprenticeships to both prospective learners and employers alike. We ran an Apprentice of the Week award at each of our training centres in Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester and Rugby and our winners were Emily Alcock Business Administration Level 3 Coventry, Lauren Yates Hairdressing Level 3 Rugby, Adelle Lynch Customer Service Level 2 Birmingham, and Imogen Cooke Hairdressing Level 2 Leicester. These apprentices were all chosen for their dedication and commitment to their apprenticeships, not only for National Apprenticeship Week but for the duration of their programmes so far. It was great to see so many of our employers joining in with the initiative, from getting involved with the #WorksForMe social media campaigns through to staging an Apprenticeship Olympics tournament and more! Jo Bevilacqua founder of the Unique Mumpreneur posted an article written by her Level 2 Business Administration Apprentice Chelsie Fitzjohn on her blog which shared Chelsie’s apprenticeship journey so far, the progress she’s made and the benefits it has brought to both Chelsie and the business. You can view the full article over at the blog section on: www.theuniquemumpreneur.com. Chelsie wrote “Before starting at The Unique Mumpreneur I had dropped out of college and was working part time for a company that I hated, I felt a little lost and wasn’t confident at all. After being introduced to Jo in January last year she gave me the opportunity to start an apprenticeship whilst helping her grow The Unique Mumpreneur brand. 15 months later I am still here and loving it. Since starting my apprenticeship I have grown so much as a person. I have gone from not being able to make a phone call to running a mastermind table at our last networking event… I truly believe that working within a business environment on a day to day basis can give you so much more skills and knowledge than just reading and writing about business." Jo and Chelsie at a recent black tie event She added: "You need to be within the business environment to truly be able to get to grips what takes place when running a business and what is involved when it comes to staff, finances, insurances and so much more, something which I do not believe Sixth Form or College can really help with.” We got in touch to thank Jo and Chelsie for sharing this post and encouraging others to look at taking on an apprentice, Jo added: "As a former apprentice myself I know how valuable apprenticeships are from a student point of view, but now as a business owner I can see how beneficial it is from business point of view too. Having Chelsie on board as an apprentice has allowed me to grow my latest business much quicker then what I have been able to if I didn't have her as an employee. She has been able to learn and develop new skills by getting involved in all aspects of the business, from marketing to accounts, from admin to events. Having full time support from someone who believes in the business as much as I do is priceless and I know that the loyalty from training Chelsie from the beginning of her journey will result in loyalty that is hard to find."
