Georgia National Fair is Back! October 4-14 That’s right, HoCo! It’s fair time in Perry again! This is something we midstate folks look forward to all year and the Georgia National Fair consistently outdoes itself. On October 4 the midway opens up for a sneak-a-peak, and none too soon as the autumn comes to middle Georgia. Families from the four corners of Georgia and beyond will fill the fairgrounds for the 22nd annual Georgia National Fair at the Perry Fairgrounds.. Rides, games, and the Eudora farms petting zoo, along with musical performances and agricultural events will kick off the first day, starting at 3pm. From October 8-11, unlimited rides wristbands will be available at $13 from 12-9, and it’s worth every penny. The view from the top of the Ferris Wheel is stupendous. The Royal Hanneford Circus will be free to all fairgoers and on hand near the South Gate. Fireworks will explode in brilliant color above fairgoers every evening. In addition to all of this the Reaves Concert Arena at the Perry Fairgrounds will be host to musical performances by Kellie Pickler and Joe Nichols at $25, from 7:30-10:30. Advance tickets include fair admission. Visit www.georgianationalfair.com for more details and a full schedule of events, entertainment, and attractions. In addition to all of this, the touring Smithsonian installation, New Harmonies: The Roots of Music will have an exhibit on hand at the fair which will provide a glimpse into the installation itself...something else to plug into that calendar of yours!

Smithsonian Institute “New Harmonies” installation at Perry Arts Center Featured in the September issue of 11th Hour HoCo, The New Harmonies exhibit celebrates the history of American music while incorporating the unique talents and contributions of the communities it visits. From antique instruments to the rock star next door, blues theory master classes and so much more, be sure to connect with the roots of music through this unique experience. It’s a once in a harvest moon opportunity to introduce a new generation to the sounds that makes the Middle Georgia community such fertile soil for the music that defines us. Shows and schedules run until October 20th. For more information visit the Perry Arts Center online at Facebook or www.perrygacalendar.com and see the feature story with 11th Hour at issuu.com/hoco11hour. There will be no shortage of music echoing through the pecan groves of Perry after the Smithsonian pulls up it’s stakes and moves on to Americus. That very day four stages of free music will perform the 3rd annual Perry Music Festival kicking off at noon in historic downtown Perry. A Kid’s Village complete with bouncy houses and other inflatables will be on hand to keep your little ones occupied while you enjoy the Indian summer awash in tunes. More information on showtimes and locations can be found at Perrymusicfestival.org. Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival October 20-21 If you have a hankerin’ to do a little shopping, another annual event taking place the weekend of October 20 and 21 is the always accommodating semi-annual Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival. This festival is a celebration of homespun skill and craftsmanship located in a secluded pine stand in the heart of central Georgia. Unique gift ideas are situated in rustic little tents in a rambling wood while music plays and acclaimed performers mingle with visitors. Voted “Favorite Arts and Crafts festival in Georgia” and one of the “Top 20 events in Georgia” as well as one of the “Top 100 Events in North America”, Mossy Creek aims to take you back to a simpler time. Homemade ice

cream and country cooking are just the tip of the hand dip that is this cozy romp. Handmade soaps and jewelry, knitted scarves and gloves for the chill coming in November and hand carved sculpture can be purchased while listening to a Appalachian mountain music, bluegrass, or a jamboree band. Be sure to explore the teepee village and pick up one for your child or grandchild and don’t miss the petting zoo and cracking bullwhip! Go online to learn more about the Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival at www.mossycreekfestival.com or call (478) 922-8265. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children, parking is free. Hours are 105pm. No Pets please! There is a petting zoo on the premises! Trunk or Treat Extravaganza Trinity United Methodist Many local places of worship get into the spirit of the season by celebrating the harvest with their own events. Trinity United Methodist always delivers, not just in their philanthropic community outreach programs like their adjacent foodbank, but with their annual Trunk or Treat Extravaganza. Costumes are welcome but keep them benign for the babies! Huge inflatables, games and cakewalks, cotton candy, popcorn and hotdogs will be on hand to make your kiddos smile and all of this is free and open to the public. They and many others use these events to inspire and enlighten the community. Trinity United Methodist will hold their Trunk or Treat event on Sunday Nov. 4 from 4-6 at 129 S. Houston Rd. in Warner Robins. For a full calendar of their events, go online at www.trinitymethodist.org or for more information about the food bank, call 923-5066. Whether it’s rollercoasters, an acoustic set, or wandering through the woods that gets you in the mood for autumn, HoCo has you covered! Wherever you end up, whether it’s atop the ferris wheel at the fair or amusing your musical fancy with the many events dispersed in our area, have a safe and happy harvest...and with all of the goodies to be had make sure to get out and take a walk in this, my favorite of the Georgia seasons! CROSSROADS WRITERS CONFERENCE Crossroads grew out of a conversation between some friends who wanted to build on the literary and creative legacy of Macon. In the fall of 2008, with the help of several volunteers and great organizations, Chris Horne and Drs. Heather Braun, Kelly Whiddon and Monica Young-Zook launched the first Crossroads Writers Conference in downtown Macon. In a stroke of luck, they’d invited novelist Ad Hudler, who really helped establish the conference its fun, loose, communal vibe. Over the past four years, the conference has been proud to bring hundreds of writers together to learn from the likes of Steve Almond, Rick Moody, Joshilyn Jackson, Jay Parini, Judith Ortiz-Cofer, Carlo Rotella, Gail Simone, Idris Goodwin, Tina McElroy-Ansa, Adam Davies, Lauretta Hannon, and several others. Not to mention all the talented writers from the metro Macon area who’ve given their time to making this conference happen. While the conference hosts regional authors, wonderful workshops and readings, the organizers are also very involved in our community. In 2011, Crossroads received a Knight Neighborhood Challenge grant to replace broken sidewalks in the College Hill area with new sidewalks adorned with poetry, lyrics, history, quotes and other literature related to Macon. It’s called Sidewalk Stories and they’re still taking nominations for the side-

walks to replace and the stories with which to replace them. This spring, Crossroads donated 100 copies of “Project Dreams,” a children’s book by local author Rhonda Singletary, to a literacy event held by Mercer University. This year, the Conference starts on Friday, October 5th, with open registration for events from noon - 3pm for their Freelancers Summit, featuring topics on Magazine Writing, Writing for the Web and Turning your Stories into Books. On Saturday, registration is from 7:30am to noon. At noon lunch and learn with Keynote speaker Chris Baty, founder of NaNoWriMo, author of “No Plot? No Problem!” Other notable authors include Adam Mansbach, author of “Go the F*** to Sleep,” and “Angry Black White Boy,” Delilah Dawson, author of “Wicked as They Come,” Bernice McFadden, author of “Gathering the Waters,” and Robert Venditti, creator of “Surrogates.” On Sunday, enjoy a Wordsmith Brunchfest from 10:30 to noon, and Book Fair and book signings from many of the weekends authors from noon - 4pm. To register for individual sessions, or weekend packages, visit Crossroadswriters.org. Individial sessions $20 each, Talk blocks start at $45 and weekend packages start at $135. All events at the Macon Centreplex and Macon Marriott Hotel.

JAZZ & ARTS ON RIVERDALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20TH - FREE COMMUNITY EVENT ON RIVERDALE DRIVE

t’s time for residents and visitors alike to welcome fall on shady Riverdale Drive in Macon, as the Jazz Association of Macon presents its ninth annual Jazz & Arts on Riverdale event Sat., Oct. 20, from Noon to 6pm. An afternoon of free live Jazz will feature the classic sounds of many of the area’s finest musicians including: the Adam Hendley Tritet, World Famous Walnut Street Dixie, Racing and Marching Society Jazz Band, and EKC Quintet and Sam Skelton Quartet. An art market, featuring local and regional fine artists, will offer works to ooh and aah over before selecting just the right pieces to take home. A kids’ corner with inflatables and an art area will entertain the little ones, and food and beverage vendors will be on site, adding to the park like atmosphere. Lawn chairs are encouraged, and the neighbors of Riverdale Drive welcome the opportunity to share their shade with visitors to the event, which they present in partnership with the Jazz Association. The Jazz Association of Macon is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Proceeds from the day support the organization’s annual “JAM Goes Back to School” project, which sends professional musicians into Middle Georgia schools to perform and educate, as well as the Jazz Association of Macon Young Jazz Musician scholarship, which is awarded at this event.

BY JESSICA ATKINSON Each business has a story to tell; in this addition we will share three of those stories with you. To have your new or growing business spotlighted here, email meg@11thhouronline.com

Arrowhead Tool and Equipment Company located at 805 Commerce Street, Perry.

Buried Hatchet Production Company Owners: Brandy and Geoff Flynn of Elko, Georgia. Buried Hatchet Production Company is definitely a new business to keep an eye on. They have partnered with The New Perry Hotel, to bring the community live and interactive entertainment. What is Buried Hatchet? This company is a little thought that has been made into reality. They will be bringing Houston County its very own Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. Many of you will be asking; “What exactly is a murder mystery dinner theater?” well to put it in the words of Mrs. Brandy Flynn “It is a classic way to bring mystery, excitement, improv, and a written play to Houston County. It will be interactive, meaning the audience will have a chance to find clues, talk to the players of the company, and help with the story as it unfolds before their very eyes. Guests are provided with dinner and the chance to participate in a classic ‘Who Done It?’” Mrs. Flynn was very excited to have the chance to talk about her up and coming production that will open to the public on October 26, 2012. Mrs. Flynn says. “I have always wanted to go to one but there isn’t anything around our area that has something like this. So after about a week of the idea floating around in my head I decided to talk to the owner of the New Perry Hotel about it. She was as thrilled with the idea as I was. I talked it over some more with the owner and my husband. “ I asked Mrs. Flynn about the name of her company, she laughed and said. “Well it’s a long story but I will try to sum it up as best as I can. It’s very similar to the phrase burying the hatchet; it’s about putting the past behind you and moving forward. Not only 8 OCTOBER 2012

moving forward in business, but life and love as well.” The first production the company will host is titled ‘Something old, something new, someone slaughtered... where were you?’ a collaboration written by Mrs. Flynn and her dear friend Christina. Mrs. Flynn says “One thing the audience can look for are clues throughout the dinner. The person to put all the clues at the end of the evening will win some prizes.” Prizes will include the Golden Hatchet Award for best sleuth of the evening and a dinner for two at the New Perry Hotel. Guests who arrive for the first production of their first performance will be let in on a few more secretes than others. “The night should be full of surprises.” says Mrs. Flynn. When asked if we could have a teaser into other story lines that this company will be offering the community Mrs. Flynn smiled. “I do not want to give away too much about the other shows but I will let you in on one other show we are going to have later on in the coming months. It’s a class reunion, full of lies and deception and possibly murder.” With all the teasers and mystery this company has to offer, it is definitely one to keep an eye on in the future.

Platinum Weddings and Events Owner: Rebecca Chambers of Bonaire Georgia When you think of a wedding planner you often have the image of someone following you around with a clip board in hand, taking notes and making sure all the vendors are in order for that perfect day. While Rebecca does some of that her talents do not stop there. In addition to doing weddings, she also offers anniversaries, birthdays, bridal showers, and baby showers to her lists of things she can help you with.

Arrowhead Tool and Equipment Owners: William Wilds and Roy in Perry Georgia

Often you would think that the average wedding planner would stop at just the organization of the wedding; Rebecca and her company go far beyond that to insure that the wedding or event will be one to make a lasting impression. Platinum wedding and events offers not only the assistance in the planning and organizations, but they also offer design consultations with the options to rent or purchase decorations to pull the wedding or event together. When asked what her favorite venue to work with was and why Ms. Chambers said “I have three venues that have been a joy to work with in my time as an event planner. Indian Springs, Plantation Farms, and Trula Gardens, not only because they are beautiful venues but the people who own the locations are willing to work with the clients to help ensure the events will be memorable.” Ms Chambers tells how she came about the name of her company with a gleam in her eye. “I wanted something that would make people think of weddings and that would stand out. I have always love platinum and it added a bit of bling to the name as well.” Something that Platinum Weddings and Events has to offer the community, that no one else does, are special monthly deals and packages to fit just about any budget. With their excellent customer service and warm presence this is a business one should look into when planning their next event.

Arrowhead Tool and Equipment is a discount tool company that has made its way into Perry, Georgia. Everywhere you look there are tools, tools, and more tools located within their building. Though, many would ask, ‘What is a discount tool store?’ as they often grace the isles of the Home Depot or Lowes. As Roy will tell you, “We have a wide variety of home improvement tools and equipment around; most of our items are priced at a 30-40% off the regular retail price you would find in the bigger stores. We offer name brand items and contractor equipment at an affordable price.” The friendly smiles and cheerful greetings you will find at Arrowhead Tool and Equipment is a breath of fresh air from the more corporate stores you may often go into when you are looking for a door knob or a drill to fix the squeaky floor board. “We want to be able to provide not only your average home repair man with the tools he needs, but we want to make sure that the ladies who come in the store are comfortable as well when they are looking to do small repairs for themselves. We hope to offer DIY workshops to help further our involvement with the community around us. Some of the workshops will cover things like how to maintain your filters in your weed eaters, change your oil in your lawn mower or even how to patch a hole in a wall.” The company just recently had their grand opening but that does not mean the deals end there. These guys plan to keep the deals coming for everyone who walks in their door. So if you find yourself in need of a light fixture, a door knob, drill, saw, weed eater, or just about anything else you need to maintain your home or contracting business stop in and see the guys at Arrowhead Tool and Equipment. Be sure you say hello to their shop mascot Lucy.

DINING SPOTLIGHT ALL IMAGES BY ADAM SMITH

BAMA GIRLZ CAFE FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

MELISSA POWERS, CO-OWNER OF BAMA GIRLZ CAFE, IS A LIFELONG BAMA FAN, BORN & BRED IN TUSCALOOSA. SHE VISITED HER BEST FRIEND WHO WAS STATIONED AT THE BASE AND SHE LIKED IT SO MUCH, SHE NEVER LEFT. “The price of victory is high but so are the rewards. If you believe in yourself and never quit you will be a winner”. This quote by Paul Bear Bryant, who led the Alabama football team to win six national championships and thirteen conference championships, stretches across the wall of Bama Girlz Cafe as the mission statement of this quaint little cafe in a corner between the Houston County Medical Center and the CVS on Watson Boulevard. The brick facade and low roof is adorned with Bama accents and the interior has been entirely reborn as a comfortable diner/cafe complete with two big screen televisions and sports memorabilia, all inspired by the Tide. It avoids the pitfalls of a smokey sports bar and is a welcoming and wholesome alternative to other establishments of the chain variety. This is a great place to take the family to watch a game. Especially if you love Alabama football. Though at least one of the televisions is dedicated to the Bama game on Saturdays, you can catch updates on other teams as you sample the menu, decked out with amped up classics. All beef Nathan’s hot dogs of the most generous portions are stretched out in poppy seed buns and topped with homemade chili or slaw upon request, and the cook, being a Chicago native, knows his way around a vat of clam chowder, as only a Yankee man does. The menu standards include a “build your own” pizza with a variety of fresh toppings and healthy sandwich options on a choice of white or honey wheat bread. The sandwiches are a popular favorite and are served as footlongs or six inch subs. The prices are competitive to any of the average sandwich deals out there and so much better than the run of the mill, mass marketed varieties. Chunky chicken salad with a slight crunch of celery and something special you can’t quite put your finger makes for one of their most popular sandwiches. The lean meat sub is a Black Angus Roast Beef, Black Forest Ham, and Honey Roasted Turkey when paired with a bag of chips and a sweet tea, hits the lunch spot just right. Melissa Powers, co-owner of Bama Girlz Cafe, is a lifelong Bama fan, born and bred in Tuscaloosa,

10 OCTOBER 2012

Alabama. She visited her best friend who was stationed at the base and she liked it so much she never left. She has raised her two children in Warner Robins, had both of her children a stone’s throw from the cafe at Houston Medical Center, and claims her new home through and through, though her loyalty to her team will never waver. “I looked at this spot for a year after Prinnie Mack closed their doors and waited for the right moment. I’m really happy with the way things have been going! We’ve been written up in The Telegraph’s Deal Saver, Deal Chicken has run some specials through us, and last week we were talked about on 13WMAZ! The community has shown us a lot of love already in the short time we’ve been open.” The crowds on Saturday are the largest, catering to the enormous population of football fans living in the Houston County area. Who can blame them? With a

couple of the best high school football teams in the country right in our own backyards, and World Little League champions popping up like weeds on our own soil, sport is king in HoCo. The Bama Girlz want to give back to their community as well, hoping to encourage patronage by sponsoring a high school night sometime in the future. Melissa hopes to give back 10-15% of sales to the teams that live and work right here in town. “My business is about our love of the game and any way I can encourage, support, and feed the community... well, I’m more than happy to be a part of it! I may be a Bama girl, but I love the game!” The proof is in the pudding, so to speak, as Bama Girlz doesn’t just “Roll Tide”; they sell the much coveted Georgia Bulldogs gear on site along with a couple of Georgia Tech Yellow jackets items for us die-hards who never learn (Tech is a great school and I’m not giving up on them without a fight!). Bama Girlz Cafe is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7-7, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7-10 pm serving breakfast to die for (I haven’t heard of another place who does a build your own omelet around here) with fresh donuts delivered from the good folks at Daylight Donuts on Russell Parkway and features daily lunch specials. For more information or to place an order for delivery call (478)302-6516 or visit them on RACHEL HELIE Facebook at Bama Girlz Cafe.

BUDGET FRIENDLY IDEAS FOR ENTERTAINING THIS FALL BY RACHEL HELIE It’s election time again and one thing that everyone is talking about is “the ECONOMY. As if we needed reminding, the candidates find a way to tell us all that our lives are or will be an oppressive nodance-land that time forgot if we don’t vote for their interests. Well, boo on that! The 11th Hour is taking the drudges by the hand and showing them “the one true way to the light fantastic! So we need a party. It’s harvest season, election season, football is on full tilt, and Halloween is right around the corner. Budgets are tight but there is no need to take fright and hide from our friends until it all blows over. Here is a point by point guide to decor, drinks, and delight on the uber-cheap! Decor You can literally find decorations just lying around during autumn. It’s October and the Southern trees drop their frocks resplendent upon the ground. Take a walk and you can find sweetgum and poplar leaves, maple and oak. A bunch of branches in a cylinder vase picked up from a thrift or dollar store serves as an all purpose autumn centerpiece and they last for a week or more. Have hydrangeas that are looking a little dreary and brown? Take the dried dust-colored bundles and mix them into a bouquet of autumn foliage for interest or alone for a creepy “dead thing Halloween accent. If you are looking for a strictly Halloween theme, go with bare branches of any length and superglue candy corn to those bad boys. Arrange in a vase and empty the remaining candy into the bottom for an anchor to the whole bundle. Voila! Interesting themed swags can be arranged for practically any occasion using plastic tablecloths purchased from Dollar Tree stores. Election themed red and blue draped from the four corners in alternating color or black and orange Halloween; team colors can easily be had and; for that matter; all of you Georgia fans can just save the black from Halloween and the red from election parties and repurpose every time you have a football cookout during the season. Four dollars well spent! A bundle of like-col-

roasted veggies like sweet potatoes and carrots tossed in olive oil and rosemary with a coarse sea salt is a pleasing, easy, and affordable. For the Halloween specific, hop onto websites like Pinterest and click on the Holiday link. The lists for affordable Halloween themed recipes are endless. The mummy pigs in the blanket are standard but I like the rice krispy Frankenstein’s monster on a stick...mainly because, you know, it’s on a stick. Whatever your budget, there is always time for pleasure. Have a safe and happy harvest, middle Georgia!

fine vanilla you may have hiding in the cupboard adds a noticeable kick. I would put the whipping cream to double duty and make a nice spinach artichoke dip on the same day you make the bread pudding. I know after I open a carton of whipping cream, it just hangs out in my fridge until it goes bad most times. A lemon thyme roasted chicken will feed about 4-6 people and costs about $4-6. Drizzle the chicken with oil and lemon juice, sprinkle thyme and coarse sea salt and toss in the oven at 425 degrees for an hour and a half. Savory chicken and a cornbread dressing paired with autumn

ored balloons gathered together in a bunch make a funky chandelier for the center and a bag of those will run you $1 per color (or get a mixed bag!) Black construction paper can be used to silhouette anything from arachnids to zombies...you got A-Z right there! Put them at baseboards on walls or in windows. Done right, they are elegantly creepy.

Eats & Drinks Clean autumn leaves can be scattered amongst dishes of harvest goodness and what would a party be without the goodness? Autumn flavors are heavy on the savory. Mulled wine is a popular favorite...at least it is at my house. An inexpensive bottle of Cabernet mixed with a light dose of water, sugar, and a cinnamon stick, dried orange, and clove bundle warmed (not boiled!) on the stovetop is a heady brew in a lush red that, when served in funky stemware, can be Halloween friendly or deliciously cozy. “DJs are def the new rockstars...”

SCENE

N LISTE UP

I have to be inspired somehow, I can't force a song. That's the trick. However, while I'm writing the song usually the visual comes to mind. It goes hand and hand, especially when you're writing the song, producing the song & mixing the song, to help you through all those hours you start putting a mini-movie in your head of what you want people to think of when they hear this song. The majority of my songs are fun, so I always try to make my videos fun, never get too deep with anything, I leave that to the true poets. When it's time to shoot a

A DJ, or at least when I was growing up what a DJ was, was someone who cut up each track in a unique way, seemlesly going through genre's without missing a beat, showcasing his trickier while entertaining the audience with his mic skills. Nowadays you don't really get that too much.

video choosing the right director & editor is the key. I have had great ones & I have had bad ones. The great ones you wanna kiss, the bad ones you wanna slap. I actually just shot my latest video myself, that was a learning experience. It was a tribute song to James Brown called "Do My Thang" which will be released this Fall. I incorporated video mapping which is a fairly new technology & I shot half of it in Augusta where James Brown & my B'boys I take on tour with me are from. I'm anxious to get it out there & see how people react to it.

Aaron "Kidd Star" Payes As an artist and producer, Kidd Star released his first solo album last year and was signed to Ishi Records, with a single hitting #4 on Billboard’s Hot Hip-Hop CD Single Charts. Since then, he’s remixed for European Billboard artists, Milk Inc., DJ Dean and Pulsedriver. Kidd Star currently resides in Atlanta and plays in Macon every Friday night. He says, “I love playing in Macon, it has such a great history in music. I always try to give Macon a sneak peak of what Atlanta is playing whenever I am in town.” Just this month, the promising DJ is releasing two new singles, “Big Ol Trick” with a music video and “Do My Thang.” Listen up below on the art of E-hop, and the business of remixing. First of all, explain your genre of music, Ehop? E-hop is something me and my former group, 3 Bad Brothaz, came up with back in 2005. It is a sound called "Electronic Hip-Hop". We came up with this sound because clubs always wanted us to play Hip-Hop and we always wanted to play Electronic music (I know tables have turned today). We came up with the idea of using Electronic beats with Hip-Hop vocals so we could play both and make everyone happy. The people loved it. They liked it so much we came out with a Mixtape series (9 volumes) titled E-hop and sold thousands of those CDs and it lead to a new fad where you had artists rappin' over Electronic beats. I'm not gonna take credit, cough, cough, but you can listen to David Guetta, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Usher, Ne-Yo, all the big billboard artists today and that's what there rapping/singing over, electronic beats. I truly do believe my group, 3 Bad Brothaz played a part in paving the way and showing those artists/record labels a different lane to play in. If you listen to my latest album, Kidd Star & The E-hop Brigade you can hear E-hop in it's true sense. E-hop in it's truest sense uses breakbeats, that's what we used when we started E-hop. Being in the South you know we love our booty music, so if you're not using a breakbeat it's just not the same. Currently I've been working with grammy nominated musicians, "Buzz" Amato & "Slipp" Hinkle to try and develop E-hop even further and push the envelope musically. We've got some great music about to be released and I'm really excited for the next wave of E-hop! You’re an artist and producer, and you have several very well produced videos on Youtube featuring your tracks off your newest album, explain that whole process for our readers. I do wear many hats and that task is very difficult in itself. Every phase is different and requires a different mentality. The first step in making a song, is the creative aspect. You gotta be able to assemble a song. My creativity stems from a lot of places but honestly, it just hits me. Like an alarm goes off in my head and says, "Time to make a song Kidd", sometimes that alarm goes off 3 times a month, sometimes 1 every 6 months. It could start with a cool riff I hear in my head or some lyrics I just start sayin, regardless of how it starts 14 OCTOBER 2012

You had a single go to #4 on Billboards Hot Hip-Hop CD Single Charts, how does that affect your career? The song, "Rah! (It's Gametime)" going #4 on the Billboard CD Singles Charts was definitely a high point in my career and helped open a lot of doors. Funny thing is, I made that song for me actually, not intentionally trying to make it to Billboard. I used to play college football and always wanted to make a sports song, so that was "Rah!". I just thought it would be cool to get it on Madden or something to that extent. But it's always the songs you just think are for fun that do the best. Ended up several professional sports teams picked it up as their fight song and it was also picked up by ESPN and the movie 'Coming & Going'. I'm still waiting on Madden to pick it up and get my free 2013 xbox game, but in the meantime it's my theme song. Every hero needs a theme song. What inspires you to create music? My inspiration comes from many things, but the foundation would have to be people. I pretty much live out of a suitcase and have been living on the "road" for almost 7 years now. I have been to some great places and met some fascinating people. But those experiences didn't come from staying in a hotel and dining out at 5 star restaruants while DJing, those experiences came from staying at friends/fellow DJs place and just watching how people live, listening to their problems and feelings and realizing how blessed I am to continue this life. Everyone has got a story to tell. Why do you think there’s been such an explosion for DJing? Who are some of your favorites out there right now? DJs are def the new rockstars. In my opinion, the explosion of DJing is due to the explosion of technology. It takes hours to buy a laptop & software, but it takes years to learn music/djing. So you have today a lot of beginner DJs. And what we have today aren't DJs, we have 80% itunes playlist players, 10% producers who spin their own tracks & 10% DJs. A DJ, or at least when I was growing up what a DJ was, was someone who cut up each track in a unique way, seemlesly going through genre's without missing a beat, showcasing his trickier while entertaining the audience with his mic skills. Nowadays you don't really get that too much. People say I'm just hating, but it ain't hating if you're bad. Ha, Ha, am I old & cynical or what??? As far as who I like today, well, there are some true cats left, DJ Scene, DJ Vice, DJ Chuckie, DJ Jelly, DJ Hershey to name a few...and one of my idols, the late Roc Raida (RIP), he was amazing. Everyone who wants to be a DJ should be required to watch this guy, he was entertainment behind the turntables. And as far as locally, I got to give my man DJ Drive props, his scratching is bananna's and I continually get on his case to enter a DMC battle, he's that good and he's the reason I got my shot here in Middle GA, the only thing he's needs work on is his Madden game.

In case you missed the exciting news on our Twitter and Facebook, Georgia Bob’s BBQ took a trip this past weekend, September 15th and 16th to meet the King of BBQ, Myron Mixon. Chosen as one of only three teams in Georgia to compete in the latest round of BBQ Pitmasters, GA Bob’s spent an entire weekend in Hotlanta at the Atlanta BBQ Festival, where the filming took place. The show will air sometime after November 28th on Destination America when the new season premiers. GA Bob himself as well as Georgia Bob and “Outlaw” Company Pit Master Danny “Outlaw” went along to cook on the show, and while their lips are sealed on the outcome, you can bet that they served up some authentic Georgia Style BBQ. True Southern "Georgia" Style BBQ is served daily at all Georgia Bob's locations. Many of today's BBQ critics & connoisseurs

fail to recognize the role that geographic culture & history plays in BBQ. Sauces and seasonings vary from place to place. "Georgia Style" BBQ differs from Alabama, Kansas, Texas, the Carolinas. The Pitmaster judges for the Atlanta Competition included Georgia's own "Myron Mixon"- of Jack's Old South, Aaron Franklin owner of Franklin BBQ in Austin, TX and Tuffy Stone with the Cool Smoke Team. GB and Outlaw not only had the opportunity to meet these talented Pitmasters.... but also chat, share stories and experiences about their most treasured passion - BBQ! GA Bob’s currently operates four stores throughout Middle Georgia and employs 63 people. Georgia Bob and partner Jennifer Cox plan to open additional company owned locations as well as offer more franchise opportunities in the very near future .

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE What are the logistics or “rules” involved when remixing someone elses music? Business wise, the #1 rule to remixing someone else's music, get their permission. However, not many people do & I am guilty of it to at times. The thinking is an unknown producer will remix some Billboard artists track in hopes to use their name to jump start their career, which in some instances works, but don't think you're gonna get any money from them. I learned my lesson with that in '05 when my former group remixed the European artist Milk Inc.'s track "Walk on Water". There version didn't do anything, our version went #1 on Q100 in Atlanta, GA and several other major markets. When they booked Milk Inc to perform in the US, the crowds/promoters were upset because they weren't playing our version. Milk Inc., wasn't aware of our version & when they found out they sent the lawyers on us. That was rough spanking at 25 yrs old, learned a lot from that. But in regards to the musical approach of remixing, I feel you have to put your twist on the song, if the remix version sounds just like the song, you didn't remix it, you edited it. Give the song a different angle or vibe, change up the beat, the chords, the melody, make the producer say, "wow, I didn't think I could go there with that song". My group I remix with, The Rat Bastardz ("Buzz" Amato, "Slipp" Hinkle), we approach every remix as a new song. We did a remix to Adele's track "Rolling in the Deep" and if you listen to it,

it's nothing like the original and honestly, I feel it's better than the original. You can listen to it and our other remixes off my soundcloud page, Soundcloud.com/kiddstar, under

Dallas Austin, the Grammy-winning producer-songwriter“keyboard fanatic” and owner of Atlanta-based Rowdy Electronics.

sets, rat bastardz. Another perfect example of what I'm talking about is a remix that was done to my song "Rah! (It's Gametime) by Macon's own DJ Structure. He took that song and put his twist on it and it sounds nothing like the original and I was so impressed. You can hear his remix on my soundcloud page or website. He did a stellar job. Keep your eye on that cat, he's going places. And one other footnote, you can take mash-up "remixes" crumble them up, put 'em in the garbage and throw em out the window, those aren't remixes. Tell us about this new project with Dallas Austin? I'm pretty excited about the Rowdy DJs opportunity. Dallas Austin will be launching his new group of DJs this year that he will be heading and I was asked to be a part of it, there is 5 of us including Dallas. It was an honor to be asked by Dallas and his staff because that is someone whom I've followed over the years and if I had to model my production career after someone it would be Dallas Austin. Good things are on the horizon, I'm just continuing to work, practice, practice, practice and stay focused on my ultimate goal which is running a successful independent label. All these experiences will help me to become a better business man and I'm enjoying each turn along this road called life. One thing I can say is when I die, I'll never have to say 'I wish I...'. 11thHourOnline.com 15

eople who are afraid of clowns — and there are many who share the phobia — might want to avoid the Oct. 4 performance of the Disgruntled Clown at Kipper’s Sports Bar. He’s anything but your average Bozo. With costume and makeup done entirely in shades of black and white, he’s loud, abrasive, a little scary, and, well, disgruntled. “Just think about all the stupid stuff you see every day,” he said. “You know how when you order fast food, and they ask you what you want to drink, then hand you a cup to go get it yourself?” asked Clown, who refuses to divulge his real name. “I get them when they do that to me. I say, ‘Just give me the damned cup.’” What started out as a dare in 1994 turned into a career and the Disgruntled Clown was born into the comedy world. Dressed in an elegant black and white silk costume, and full make-up, the 6-foot-5, 300 pound “Clown,” as he is called by his friends, takes the stage with an attitude as big as his heart. He was destined to be the Disgruntled Clown. His mom

always said he was a clown, which was confirmed upon being voted class clown in high school. The Disgruntled Clown is one of the hottest comics on the road, the only Comedian clown touring clubs,Small Towns, colleges, and theaters from coast to coast. The Disgruntled Clown is a oneman-show, complete with sound, lights, and special effects for an unforgettable comedy experience. Buckle up, this ain’t no kiddie show. Some people have a fear of clowns called coulrophobia. According to the Clown, “the quickest way to get over your fear is to get under them.” The Clown hopes to turn everyone into coulrophilias, which is a fetish for clowns. The Clown has worked with some of the biggest names in the business, including Carrot Top, Ron White, the White House Marine Corp Band, and many more. Show will start at 8pm. Advance tickets can be purchased at Kippers for $8, or admission will be $12 at the door.

We spent a lot of time driving between jobs in his truck and because of that, we were listening to 99.1 at least a few hours every day. I quickly developed my somewhat ironic love affair with country music and now my radio doesn't leave WDEN when I'm in my car (I have an older car, no CD player). I'm a fan of all kinds of country, from the classics of Williams Sr. and Waylon Jennings, to that awkwardly awe-

some period in the 80's and 90's, to even the full blown auto-tuned, how-can-you-call-this-country country. I love a good pop song and that's just about all country music is these days. That's why I was thrilled when I was asked to cover the upcoming Luke Bryan Farm Tour 2012 concert that's taking place on the mid-way in Central City Park on October 13th. Last year, the event sold-out at Luther Williams Stadium and it's set to be bigger and better this time around. The idea for the “Farm Tour” concerts came from Bryan as a way to give back to local farming communities by celebrating and lifting up the American Farmer and offering a fun escape with the outdoor shows. Proceeds from the concerts will go to a scholarship for a student from a farming family attending a local college. Bryan is actually one of only three country musicians to have three consecutive, Platinum-selling tracks on an album, joined only by Taylor Swift and Jason Aldean. I'll be there bright and early, tail-gating and practicing my country slang and I hope you'll stop by. Tickets available online www.lukebryan.com, $30 general admission. Chairs and blankets allowed. No backpacks or coolers. Tailgating starts at 2pm, gates opens at 5pm and show will start at 7pm. Macon is the last stop on the Tour, and this show is sure to sell out! SEAN PRITCHARD

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
