y wife and I started the 11th Hour over 10 years ago in Statesboro, Georgia, out of the back of an old beat up truck with no money and too many student loans. We went out and sold every ad needed to print the first edition. We never took out a loan, we built the paper with help from a few good friends and writers, and once it was going, we moved it to Macon, to Valdosta and then to Houston County. In each of our cities the 11th Hour has played a huge part in creating a sense of community. We’ve helped create and sustain festivals and events, we’ve given tens of thousands of dollars in advertising to local charities and we’ve become a staple for folks that are looking to build a life and have a sense of place. We get so busy sometimes, putting out issues, that we forget sometimes, how proud we should be of what we have done in these towns, and of what we are trying to do here in Warner Robins. Our advertisers and our readers are the ones who understand what being a community is all about. Coming togeth-

er and standing behind certain things that set your city apart from all the others. As you’ve noticed each month, our

We look forward to hearing from you and helping Houston County create a true community scene all residents and transients can be proud of. distribution grows, around the Houston County area as well as on Robins Air Force Base. Thank you to the International community for embracing what we are trying to do hear. We look forward to working together. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to call us at 478-464-1840. You can also make comments online, send in story ideas, rants or raves on our website, 11thHourOnline.com. We look forward to hearing from you and helping Houston County create a true community scene all residents and transients can be proud of.

Wednesday night is buy one regular ticket, get 1 FREE! The Perry Players Community Theatre is excited to announce the final show of their 30th season, Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple." It's a great cast, the fantastic Todd Wilson is directing and it's sure to be a hit! This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assembled for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Warner Robins Little Theatre presents “Black Jack Justice” on May 4-6 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM The play is by Gregg Taylor, who is the writer and director of the award winning Decoder Ring Theatre podcast. This show has only been preformed a handful of times in the US and we are honored that the author has so graciously waived the royalties as an anniversary gift to our theatre. This show should definitely be billed as a comedy, and it includes the whole "play within a play" bit. I believe you've read the script, but the basic premise is: Set during the Golden Age of Radio, actors in a detective radio show arrive for work to find that they don't have a complete script and must go on the air live in a matter of minutes. The writer is frantically working to finish the script before the break, but is hindered by inebriation. The show is family friendly and absolutely hilar-

ious. The show will be open to the public on a first come, first served basis. No Reservations. While there will not be an admittance fee we will be asking the audience to donate what it was worth to them after the show. www.wrlt.org Warner Robins Little Theatre, 502 S Pleasant Hill Rd. MEET THE BOSS

Get to Know... HODAC Houston Drug and Action Council Executive Director Kathy Hart

since 1997. That is especially close to my heart. Being able to read and stand in front of a group of people EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, KATHY HART and share your story is so important and to help other people have that experience is really touching. I will be installed as the Centerville Rotary Club President over the summer of this year, and I serve on the Robins Regional Chamber of Commerce Board, I am Vice Regent for the Sukey Hart Daughter of the American Revolution and am active in the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH).

I

n 1971 the Houston Drug and Action Council was founded to educate, and provide intervention, prevention, and rehabilitation to those in our community that struggle with drug and alcohol related problems. Now, over forty years later, it is a well oiled machine that is commonly known as HODAC. From counseling victims of domestic violence, rape, and abuse to coordinating clinical assessments to providing a temporary home to homeless mothers in substance abuse recovery who need help making the transition to a drug free life while caring for minor children, HODAC covers a wide range of available services and programs. Executive Director Kathy Hart has, for the last five years prior to retirement from her duties as a city administrator in Warner Robins, invested an enormous amount of her time and energy making sure that HODAC is prepared and equipped to facilitate the needs of the Houston County area. We asked her a few questions and found that she can be found in a variety of capacities working to enhance the quality of life in our community I want to thank you for your time today. I know you’re a busy woman! First off, what is your favorite part of your work with HODAC? I do the work because I love it. That’s really all it is. I love the people and my community and I feel it’s a real privilege to be able to serve them.

What are some other activities and organizations that you are involved in? Well, I’m very active in the community at large. I chaired the CLCP (Certified Literacy Community Program) which is an adult literacy initiative,

Every Month Hodac releases a monthly newsletter filled with useful articles, up-to-date content and fun tips for your everyday life. The Hodac newsletter is a great way to stay in touch with Hodac's events, classes, services and more while educating yourself on topics that stem from our mission points; education, advocacy, prevention and intervention. After school, during school holidays and summer breaks, Hodac’s Teen Center offers a safe and stimulating environment for youth ages 10-18. The service is free to Houston County families. 2762 Watson Blvd., Warner Robins www.hodac.org

In your professional career at HODAC and in your work with the city, who was a personal hero and mentor to you? I worked very closely with the Supervisor of the city, Jesse Fountain. He really allowed me to learn and gave me the freedom to use what I learned. He used to call me his “diamond in the rough” and over time he gave me opportunities to reveal my strengths and shine. He and my husband, Dan Hart, have been an incredible source of support and encouragement. Dan is one of the most ethical men I have ever known and he is my best friend. He really challenges me to be a better person. I moved here to be with him 23 years ago and have developed a true love for this area. You know, it isn’t my first time around but he made me a better person than I was. It’s amazing what good, kind people inspire in you to accomplish. - RACHEL HELIE

DINING Po Man’s Kicked Up Soul Food Kicks Up Slow Food In Central Georgia

T

he act of eating true Southern soul food is a meditative experience. It is frequently punctuated with satisfied sighs and worshipful eyes cast upward. It takes all day to get just right but when it’s done right there is absolutely nothing in the culinary world that can take you to that place that maybe you only glimpse in your dreams, a childhood running barefoot in fields behind your grandma’s house looking for arrowheads and lazy sun drenched sweet tea days on a sleeping porch. It’s a Norman Rockwell painting of the family table and Americana in a single bite. Po Man’s Kicked Up Soul Food started modestly as Sunday dinners at Pastor Carl (of Eagle Wings Ministries) and Terri Murray’s home. The meals were made with love for their church family and the blessing of this food extended from there to an unassuming storefront in the Commercial Circle area of Warner Robins. It’s now been there for four years. Terri, owner and manager of Po Man’s and recent participant in the Art of Chocolate event in Perry, has undergone gastric bypass surgery and with it had to adjust to considerable lifestyle changes takes into account substitutions that accommodate those with health issues of their own. She incorporates sly changes that are completely seamless in the final product. From cooking with olive oil and smoked turkey instead of lard and pork fat, to baking instead of deep frying, she acknowledges the challenges that face our area which is currently suffering a epidemic surge in diabetes and obesity. “I want to feed our community but I feel that food presents the opportunity of a twofold blessing. You can get fed and you can feel better.” One afternoon a little over a month ago, in desperate need of authentic comfort food, nightlife columnist Lacey Evans and I happened upon Po Man’s. We needed a homecooked Southern meal and boy did we get it. Lacey ordered

Where she works? Greek Corner Pizza on Forsyth in Macon What she recommends? Our gyros, of course and our gyro pizza. And I love the Greek chicken pitas. Favorite restaurant other than where you work? It would have to be Jim Shaw’s, my favorite is the Blackened Tuna Salad.

the fried pork chop and I had the baked chicken, delicately spiced and piping hot right off the stove and prepared by Pastor Carl. Terri served our table with a graciousness that you simply never see anymore outside of small family owned businesses like this one. The sides were as delicious as anything my grandmother ever made and that is not a compliment I extend lightly. The macaroni and cheese was the baked variety that can only be described as the food equivalent of a nice warm hug. The collard greens were a marvel. I swear, I haven’t ordered collard greens from anywhere that had the flavor and balance that these did. Oxtail soup was simmering in the kitchen when we arrived and if we had been twenty minutes later I would have ordered that too. And they serve fried okra which is one of my all time favorite dishes when it is done right. It was delicious and the serving was large enough to match my compulsion to pop the crispy veggies into my mouth one after another. For dessert I ordered the Orange Dreamsicle cake, a huge slice that, when I tasted it, made me think of all of the

times I ordered the Frosted Orange from the Varsity when I lived in Atlanta. Another bout of nostalgia followed. At the end of our meal Lacey and I were full and intensely satisfied, but I wanted to have the experience all over again after I took a nice long nap. In fact, Lacey commented that the only thing missing was a couch in the back that she could curl up on. When I think of southern comfort foods I think of food that takes all day to get the perfect balance of flavor. This is the kind of food that makes you want to sit back in your chair, rub your belly with intense satisfaction and politely excuse yourself for a nap. Po Man’s Kicked Up Soul Food is located at 409 N. Commercial Circle, Warner Robins and is open Mondays 11-4, and Tues-Fri 11-6. Saturdays from 10-4. They also provide catering. COVER STORY

Middle Georgia is Ready for It’s Close-Up When film icon Clint Eastwood arrived in Macon last month to shoot a scene for his upcoming film “Trouble with the Curve” at Cheers, a low-key neighborhood bar on Northside Drive, the bar’s owner Jimmy Pierson was nearly speechless. “It was just unbelievable,” Pierson recalled. “You’ve got the biggest guy in the business in your bar.” The shoot had been in the works for weeks, ever since a Hollywood location scout popped in one afternoon to take some photos of the potential site for Eastwood and the production team, but the reality hadn’t set in until the man himself appeared in the doorway. A lifelong Eastwood fan, Pierson couldn’t shake the images of Rowdy Yates from the ‘60s TV show Rawhide and Dirty Harry Callahan as he shook hands with the acclaimed actor and director and showed him around the bar. Within minutes, it was clear that the admiration was mutual. “I was actually surprised that they picked the bar to shoot in, because you would think that they could just snap a picture and build the set,” Pierson remarked, “but when Clint Eastwood walked in, he told them to get a contract, and he said ‘you can’t buy a place like this; you can’t build it.’” The authenticity that Eastwood found at Cheers, and at Luther Williams field in Central City Park downtown, where he shot another scene for the baseball-themed drama, has lured filmmakers to all manner of American cities like Macon, in search of bona fides not to be found on Hollywood sound stages. To meet that demand, states and cities throughout the country have devised tax incentives, established film commissions, and advertised in print and online in order to draw production crews and their hefty budgets to town. “For every dollar that is spent in tax credits, $1.24 is made in state and municipal revenues,” Lee Thomas, the Director of the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment office remarked in a recent interview. That might not sound like much, but when you consider that the 336 film, TV, and video game productions that took place throughout Georgia in fiscal year 2011 resulted in nearly $2.5 billion in direct economic impact across the state, it’s easy to see why state and local governments have taken notice. For nearly forty years, Georgia has been at the forefront of the movement to draw independent and Hollywood production companies out of California. Ironically, a film that many Georgians protested for its stereotypical portrayal of rural southerners was the impetus for a bold policy of recruiting filmmakers to the state, as Thomas went on to explain. “(then Governor) Jimmy Carter started the office because he saw a lot of money come into a poor part of the state -- Rabun county --

In addition to Dunwody, the Commission’s staff includes talent and production coordinator Cindy Hill, marketing and publicity manager Terrell Sandefur, along with location and production coordinators Stephanie Shadden and Tabitha Lynn Walker. “So out of the Macon Film Festival, the Macon Film Commission was born,” Dunwody explained. “We are sanctioned under the City of Macon, but we are still independent and under the film festival.”

from the movie Deliverance, and he thought it would be a great thing to market. So, Deliverance was shot in ‘72 and we started our office in ‘73.” In the ensuing decades, the Film, Music, & Digital Entertainment office has been central to bringing over 700 feature films, TV movies and series, single episodes, and pilot productions to the state. “It has definitely had its ups and downs,” Thomas explained. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s, we had a lot of business, but in the 90s, Canada took a lot of business away, and then Louisiana had an ambitious incentive program that went in place in 2002, (but) now we have really caught up with them.” Central to the Georgia’s comeback to one of the top five states in the country for film production is an ambitious program of tax incentives for entertainment companies passed by legislators in the last decade, along with low labor costs, scenic and varied locations, and a large talent pool. Production companies from around the country routinely send scripts to Lee Thomas and her team, who search for locations throughout the state that match the company’s need. “We have a large digital library of location photos that we search through,” Thomas explained, “but sometimes we get requests that are pretty obscure or specific.”

Enter Camera Ready Counties. Created two years ago as a means to connect film production crews with knowledgeable local liaisons, Camera Ready Counties has been one of the most successful initiatives undertaken by the Film, Music & Digital Entertainment office. “What you see with this incentive is that a lot of films are going outside of Atlanta, throughout the state,” Thomas remarked. “You see shows that are shot down in Valdosta, or Rabun County, or in Macon, and we need to have someone on the ground there who can point them in the right direction, who know the community very well.” In Middle Georgia, that liaison is Elliott Dunwody, head of the Macon Film Commission, and a skilled filmmaker in his own right whose knowledge of film is matched only by his encyclopedic understanding and love for his home town. “There have been film commissions in Macon for a while,” Dunwody explained. “I’m not sure how far they go back, but there was a vacuum three or four years ago, and some of us in the Macon Film Festival decided that it was time to have a film commission with people who are in the industry.” The success of the Macon Film Festival -- which celebrated its eighth year in February 2012 -- has fostered a culture of film appreciation in Macon and has directly introduced filmmakers to the beauty and versatility of the city as an evocative setting for their work. “Because the festival has grown so much,” Dunwody explained, “we have filmmakers who come to Macon and see it as a bright spot to do a film.

WISE BLOOD, MACON 1979

Of course, Macon and Middle Georgia have long been a location of choice for directors looking for authentic deep south locations and colorful extras. The Oscar-nominated “Fried Green Tomatoes” put Juliette on the map in 1991 and still draws tourists more than twenty years later, “My Cousin Vinny” brought the limelight temporarily to sleepy Monticello, and the legendary director John Huston brought his 1979 production of Flannery O’Conner’s “Wise Blood” to Macon, filming scenes downtown and on the outskirts of the city. The Macon Film Commission, along with their partners in Atlanta, are looking to expand that legacy by attracting big names like Clint Eastwood, along with independent filmmakers to Macon. “We have been working with several small, indie film makers for a couple of years, but the first major film we have gotten in a while is the Eastwood film,” Dunwody remarked. In addition to Eastwood’s “Trouble With The Curve” (which will feature Justin Timberlake, Amy Adams, and John Goodman), the film commission has also successfully courted another big-budget Hollywood production that is set to film in Macon in a couple months. “We’ve been working with the production crew of “42,” a film about Jackie Robinson (that will star Harrison Ford among other well-known names), for several months,” Dunwody said. “They came here just to see a particular location, but after we worked with them for a while, they have now decided to use several locations in Macon.” “I am very proud of all that they have done to pull together the Macon Film Festival,” Macon Mayor Robert Reichert said, referring to the Macon Film Commission, “but also to reach out and be the initial point of contact for the movie producers who are looking to film things here. I think they’ve done a wonderful job.” Mayor Reichert has been a staunch supporter of the film commission and the incentives that bring film production crews to town throughout his tenure. Although the film commission operates independently of the Mayor’s office, or any other government entity, its members share an ultimate goal with the mayor that transcends economic impacts and tax incentives. “There is an economic impact,” Mayor Reichert explained, “but more importantly, there is an opportunity to showcase Macon to a much wider audience that goes and says ‘wow, that’s a beautiful scene; where did they film that? That was filmed in Macon, GA. Well, good gracious.’”

What’s Your Frequency, Middle Georgia?

RACHEL HELIE

I

t’s no secret that the way America consumes music is changing. Big conglomerates have bought up radio stations in the area over the last thirty years and defined what people hear and used branding platforms to anticipate what their public wants. Businesses invest with those stations that they feel can best deliver their messages and their products. Those stations are run by huge media conglomerates such as Clear Channel and the Cumulus Network, in addition to several other monied agents. But the market is ever shifting and even the big boys of the radio biz are finding that the age of the monolithic definitions of public consumption are as well. People don’t want the Wal-Mart version of music. Humans crave a sense of adventure and discovery in a world that grows ever smaller. As new technologies adapt to our needs, we have begun craving a return to our native soil, something at once familiar and uniquely ours. On top of small business initiatives, Buy Local campaigns, and other locally centered art and commerce mediums, people are demanding that their voices are heard over the din of the megawatt giants. They want local radio. As of November 2011, a conversation was begun in Macon about what local radio would be. Roger Riddle, in an open letter to the Macon Telegraph stated that “it wouldn’t hurt to have a hour-long local music show on the radio once a week. We’ve got a lot to be proud of, it’s time to start showing that pride.” Chris Horne in a recent correspondence on what the nature of an upstart local radio station would be wrote that “It seems like a good idea to start with the online option as a way to gauge the community's support, to test how dedicated our volunteer DJs, etc., would be. One thing I've learned is that a lot of people can love an idea but it'll almost always be done by a small number of them. What we'd need to know now is whether that small number can be counted upon and what kind of other contributions the rest of our support might give.” As Mercer prepares to accept a fund influx to the tune

of $4 million dollars and NPR and Georgia Public Broadcasting set up tech and communications labs on campus, the question is being asked: “How can the community participate and encourage this dialogue and its accomplishment in the most constructive and creative ways?” There is talk of podcasting, investors, digital versus analog, and how to drive the brand. Speaking with a veteran of the radio broadcasting industry of twenty years who would like to remain nameless, the current state of affairs in the area is described as a sort of “land grab” that began in the mid nineties. Big corporations bought up many of the smaller radio providers in the area and populated the air waves with syndication, which eliminated any opportunity for local flavor. Programming was determined by investors and wider market variables. But according to market analysts of today and industry professionals on the ground, the big corporations are lagging. They aren’t transitioning well in a digital age. More market shares in radio clusters are owned by smaller businesses and investments houses. It is said that a lack of innovation will kill radio. If video didn’t kill the radio star, in other words, the Internet sure will. Pandora alone already generates more revenue than the entire radio industry. Sirius XM and Spotify are in hot pursuit. The buzz is that the smaller business model may already be upon radio and the reality hasn’t dawned on investors yet. It is the same thing that is happening to print media but in audio form, and something that industry pundits like Mark Ramsey are consistently discussing. Which leads us to the question: “Is now the time to stake a claim in what is uniquely ours and give a voice to it?” The questions that drive business are the questions of viability and the ability to generate revenue, but also to gauge the climate of consumption. It doesn’t take a miscroscope to observe how things across the board, from food to the way we entertain ourselves, is taking a turn toward the smaller, local interests. Combining unique talent, acts, and a digital platform with strong local investment who knows what can happen. That being said, I can think of a really big transmitter sitting idle in the heart of Warner Robins. FYI.

Extra, Extras!

Your chance to be an extra in Harrison Ford’s new film, shooting in Macon on June 12-13 When Harrison Ford comes to town in June, he’ll be needing about 1,000 people to hang around Luther Williams field while he films a few scenes slated for the big screen in the upcoming Jackie Robinson Biopic. The extras, 500 each day, are needed June 12 and June 13, according to a website run by a casting company, Southern Hollywood Events. Participants get free food, free prizes and a chance to see the stars of the movie “42.” Ford will play Dodgers President Branch Rickey who hired Robinson. The movie will also star Chadwick Boseman and Chrisopher Meloni. The movie extras are supposed to wear 1940s attire. Men and women of the time “always looked dressed up,” Southern Hollywood Events wrote. More details on styling and dress, as well as applications to be extras, are available online at www.BeInTheMovie42.com.

Country music has found its new Georgia Peach in talented up-andcoming artist, Colby Dee. On Friday, April 20, the Warner Robins native performed live for her hometown crowd at the Cox Capitol Theatre in downtown Macon. Fans in attendance will be able to participate in the making of Colby Dee’s new music video and will also receive exclusive giveaways. “I’m thrilled to be playing this important show and especially proud to be doing it in my hometown,” says Colby Dee. Growing up in Warner Robins, Colby says she was inspired by Macon music legends and led her to believe that her dreams of making it in the music business is possible. Billboard.com’s Chuck Dauphin has quickly become a fan of Colby

Tell me how you first got into music. I started singing when I was seven. I’d sing at home, which my mother encouraged. My first performace was at a Macon Whoopee game. I really started pursuring music seriously about a year ago. How has the transition to Nashville been? It’s going really well. It was a little scary because everyone up here seems to be searching for a dream. But I’ve had great luck, working with Lady Antebellum, Braid Paisley, and folks like that. It’s been a great ride, and I’ve enjoyed it so much, every minute of it. What’s been the best moment so far? Now that’s a hard one! Writing with different songwriters is always a favorite of mine. Having two stories and making it into one. It’s always something that I love watching. I got to meet Garth Brooks when he was inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
