EDITOR’S NOTES

STORY IDEAS AND COMMENTS editor.11thHourHoCo@gmail.com

by JENNY MURR

ast week was the 100th Year Celebration of the birth of Girl Scouts. As the second of three generations of Girl Scouts, the memories I have of scouting range from amazing to embarrassing. As a young girl, I remember being proud to wear my Girl Scout uniform to school on the day of our meeting. I was even more proud that MY MOM was the troop leader. I remember the grandness of the ceremonies when I was pinned or when I bridged up to a new level. (I’m smiling as I think of what a dork I must have looked like wearing various shades of brown dress, hat, sash, beanie…yep, that silly hat that topped my enormously frizzy blonde hair.) And in true GS fashion, when my little girl came of age I quickly registered her into a Daisy troop and a year later became her Brownie troop leader. Many leaders understand the importance of their position in helping girls learn of their potential and the endless possibilities that await them. But not me, I was just having fun acting like a big kid and doing craft projects. Despite my obliviousness, these young girls actually learned things like relationship skills, selfesteem, and achieving goals. In fact, my heart swells each time my path crosses one of my “chickies” and I see what well-adjusted young women they’ve become. While I remember my time as a GS leader with a sense of pride, there’s a memory of being a GS mother of which I must admit a certain amount of shame. You see, I learned an important lesson as the mother of a first time Girl Scout camper….you must remember to pick up your kid! That’s

right; I traumatized my rising kindergartener the summer of 1990. There I was enjoying a lazy Saturday morning, sleeping in with my husband. The sun was peeking through the shades, but nothing was going to interrupt that final day of silence I had enjoyed for the past week. My child was happily learning about nature on the last day of camp, I was sure that she was pulling wings off of bugs and learning all kinds of cute songs to perform for her parents at the closing ceremony the next day….or so I thought. But as the phone repeatedly rang, I grudgingly answered with a curt “hello!” Only to hear the party on the other end of the line ask, “Ms. Sapp?” “Yesssssssss” I groaned. “I’m calling from Camp Martha Johnston. I was wondering if you intended to pick up Meghan?” “Of course”, I responded somewhat bothered. “Well, when do you expect to be here? Because all the other girls have left and Meghan has done well until the last movie ended. Now she’s getting a bit upset.” I jumped out of bed. “But I thought camp ended tomorrow!” I exclaimed. “No, it ended at 11 a.m. today”, she responded. “Do you think you can be here by 5 p.m.? Because I have to get home and do my laundry before the next session starts tomorrow.” That’s right readers…I am the world’s worst Mommy. I left my kid at summer camp and I have never lived it down! Do you think that’s why she didn’t move out of my home until age 26?

Easter Traditions and the American Way

I

n the Christian tradition, Easter marks the end of the forty days of Lent, a period of fasting, prayer, and penance. In the Hebrew tradition it marks the time of Passover, the celebration of Jewish liberation from enslavement during the time of Moses. It is defined by many traditions but primarily those of feast and family. At the height of Spring in the South, people of all backgrounds celebrate according to the many customs and traditions of their families. The beauty of this time in America is it’s capacity for variation. Celebration takes on many forms, not just those of Christian or Jewish traditions but those of the many cultures and faiths. In my own family, several faiths and ethnic backgrounds are represented. From Roman Catholic, Southern Evangelical, Judaism, and Agnostic,I have been exposed to the host of them and am always interested in the customs of others. Although I do not currently practice any faith, I find that Easter represents for me an opportunity to spend time with my family, teaching my children the springtime traditions of my childhood. As a girl, a great favorite of mine was my Southern Baptist grandmother s Sunday school followed by cornbread and macaroni salad, along with piles of fried chicken and her 7-Up pound cake. Out west, in the sun splashed deserts of Arizona, after mass I enjoyed my uncle Sammy’s green and red tamales and pans of baked enchiladas, homemade salsas and mole, all served with perfectly round tortillas my aunts pressed out the day before. I stood near smoking grills while my uncles, aunts, and cousins laughed loudly over roasted meats that made my mouth water. My contribution was always sopapillas, a fried pastry coated in sugar and sometimes lightly dusted with ground cinnamon.

Since arriving in central Georgia and having my own family, the beautiful explosion of color that comes with the onset of Spring lends itself to the appreciation of bounty and festivity that make us who live here so very fortunate. A great favorite for me are cascarones, or confetti eggs. Though the candy variety are nice, confetti eggs incorporate an element of fun and spontaneity to the day. There is no greater pleasure than surprising a loved one with the sensation of a cracked egg over the head combined with the festive glitter and colorful mess of confetti (I use biodegradable). I loll in the grass with my children and eat chocolate after an egg hunt, followed by feasting. Family and friends bring together the traditions of their own culinary backgrounds to create a hodge podge that can only be described as deliciously eclectic. - New Hope International is hosting E2: Eggstravaganza See opposite page. - Sacred Heart on Watson Blvd. in Warner Robins will be celebrating Holy Week from Thursday through Sunday. Sunday will feature several masses as early as 7am with an Easter Egg Hunt following 9 am Sunday Mass. Just follow the crowd across the PAC! Spanish language mass is offered at 2pm. - Trinity United Methodist Church on South Houston Rd. in Warner Robins will be having an Easter Egg hunt, Easter Bunny meet and greet and an Easter craft April 1 at 4:30. - Harvest Church will be hosting an Easter Egg hunt and other events on Saturday, April 6 at 6 pm, and Saturday April 7 Whatever background defines your family, be sure to try a little something new. This country we live in is full of beauty and if you think outside the box a bit, you can t help but find it.

What’s happening in Macon

BEST BETS Spring is definitely in the air. (As evidenced by the film of pollen accumulating on cars and anything left outside for more than an hour.) These next two weeks offers Middle Georgians a plethra of events to get outside and enjoy the mild temps, blooming streetscapes and the diverse cultural activities offered around the area. So grab the Nasonex and head for the door, ‘cause these next couple of weeks are going to keep you very busy! TOUR-IST FOR A DAY

Starting the week of March 19th, Macon’s pollen count is off the charts, that’s “Very High” in technical terms. Tree pollen from Oak, and Pine are the main culprits for that runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. But if the blooming splendor of Macon’s Cherry Trees have you in awe, instead of awchoo, consider taking the Cherry Blossom Riding Tour. Join this guided bus tour of the Cherry Blossom Trail that intrigues passengers with stops at the Woodruff House and St. Joseph Catholic Church. They tell outrageous stories, conduct unending internal monologues full of monsters and fairies, the world as it is being a sometimes frightening and unknowable place otherwise. As a painfully shy young girl I found my respite in books, living out other worlds in my head when I found it difficult to participate with my peers in the real world. I did not find making friends easy. Those imaginary worlds were full of bold heroines who were not afraid to speak their mind; Jo from Little Women, Nancy Drew, and Elizabeth Bennett of Pride and Prejudice. The perceived smallness of my life opened to a vast landscape that seemed endless. I explored the Shire and Middle Earth, took a raft down the Mississippi, fought alongside soldiers in WWI and WWII. As I grew into a young woman, I explored my voice more. I was still petrified but something about playing roles allowed me to step outside of myself and become someone different. I broke my fourth wall, that imaginary wall that divides the play from the audience. I became what I pretended. Brave. In front of a room full of strangers I found the voice inside of me that wanted to be heard. Experiences with stage roles were instrumental in that. Whether Eliza Doolittle, Desdemona, or Eleanor of Aquitaine, I learned things about myself with each performance. This is what Tammy Fisher, Director of Theatre at Warner Robins High School hopes to accomplish this year for the youth of middle Georgia. With ten years of experience in award winning productions under her belt, she is bringing the magic of the stage to the children of our area for the first time in over six years. Available to kids ages 7 through grade 8, the process guides “young stars through monologue discovery, voice coaching, and stage presence skill set.” The hope is that these practices will inspire confidence and allow children to overcome natural inhibitions through trust and team-building strategies, and interpretive stage craft. The techniques utilised at 4th Wall are skills that could

Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years of Courage, Confidence & Character

E

arly in their lives, Vicky Bridges and Sandra Haga, both in the same Girl Scout troop, learned how to make a difference in their world. They are still making a difference…only now, they are the troop leaders and are helping to build courage, confidence and character in their Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors. Back then, girls had to be in the 2nd grade to join Girl Scouts as a Brownie. But now, girls as young as five can take part in the century-old organization as Daisies. “Sandra was involved with jail ministries through our church and was distressed about the young women who were there,” said troop leader Vicky. “We wanted to make a difference in our community, so we got the support of our church, Ft. Valley United Methodist, to have a troop meeting there.” They started in September, 2011, with six girls and now have 16: 8 Daisies, 6 Brownies, 2 Juniors. “Girls need to be in a group doing positive activities,” Vicky said. And she knows from experience the impact that such a group can have on a girl. She was a leader for her daughters’ troop. Both of her daughters made it through the entire program—12th grade—and they won the Gold Award. “We ended up with 10 girls in the troop earning their Gold Award (4 had been in the troop since Daisies),” she said. “Most of them are married with chil-

dren. They all graduated from college.” The methods have changed over the years for the Girl Scouts, but Vicky says that Girl Scouts are still relevant for today’s young ladies. “Our recent cookie campaign was great,” she said. “We were able to learn about financial literacy. Regardless of her age, each girl brought something away from the experience. Some learned about marketing, others learned about setting goals and management skills, while the younger ones learned about saving and counting money. They learned to SPEND IT, SAVE IT, and SHARE IT. We are excited to share some of the profits with two local charities: Ronald McDonald House and Grace House.” Her newly formed troop recently celebrated the 100th Birthday of Girl Scouting by working on “My Faith, My Promise”, a program that encourages scouts to choose one of the Girl Scout Laws and share it with a woman of faith. On Girl Scout Sunday, the girls participated in the church program where they enjoyed a luncheon, displayed old uniforms and books, and held a pinning ceremony. In June, they plan to visit Washington, D.C., for a Girl Scout sing-a-long. Vicky’s troop consists of a diverse group of girls from Roberta, Perry, Ft. Valley, and Byron. Girl Scouts, continued

O

n March 12, 2012, Savannah, Ga., was inundated with girls and women celebrating the birth of one of the most influential organizations of our culture—Girl Scouts. What began as a small gathering of girls now consists of over 3.2 million current members and over 50 million Girl Scout alumnae. Girl Scouts has groomed young women to become the leaders for over a century. At a time when women didn’t have the right to vote and were expected to be “barefoot and pregnant”, , Juliette Gordon Lowe understood the importance women could have in their families and within their community, the nation, and, ultimately, the world. She founded American Girl Guides (changed to Girl Scouts one year later) in 1912 registering 18 girls at the first meeting. She began encouraging them to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness; to realize that they could be active citizens outside of the home. In fact, she challenged them to look beyond societal norms of what a woman could do and see that their future roles could be as professional women These young women were trailblazers not only affecting change in their own generation but in their mother’s generation as well; in fact, they cared for the children of the women who were first to register to vote. And the influence of Girl Scouts on the world continues today. These young women have taken leadership roles in

politics, science, media, arts, sports and more. The list includes singers, journalists, chefs, a Supreme Court Justice and even an astronaut. It seems that the Girl Scout organization has a perfect recipe for creating intelligent, thoughtful, caring members of society. The ingredients— courage, confidence, and character— combined yield women who want to make the world a better place. LOCAL GIRL SCOUT ALUMNAE

hursday, March 22nd, family, friends and fans in Fort Valley had the chance to gather to celebrate a hometown star as she opens a big box office hit. Lionsgate’s highly-anticipated film The Hunger Games opens Friday at midnight and local movie goers may see a familiar face on the big screen. Central Georgia native Karan Kendrick plays the role of Atala (uh-**tall**-uh), the fierce trainer, in the film. A group of family and friends has organized a reception for her at 6:00 p.m. at the Austin Theatre in downtown Fort Valley. This event is free and open to the public. Kendrick, who just returned from the Hollywood premiere, is thrilled to be one of the principle characters in the popular series. She admits, though, there is another role that is also one of her favorites--the role of "Ms. Karan" to her local students. The actress is the director of the Kendrick Academy, where she provides classes in the performing arts. After graduating from Peach County High School, she earned a bachelor of arts from Spelman College in Atlanta. Kendrick also holds an

Executive Master of Business Administration from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. “This is where it all started for me,” said Kendrick. “There’s no

place I’d rather be at this time than home with family and friends.” The actress is no stranger to the big screen. Kendrick appeared in Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail and starred in Lifetime’s 2010 film The Wronged Man. She has an impressive repertoire of television experience including roles on Lifetime Television’s Drop Dead Diva and Army Wives.

DINING JOHN’S MEXICAN A WR TRADITION

D

own on First Street, just beside the railroad tracks, business is booming at Warner Robins’ longest running restaurant. Although originally called Second Gate Café, this hotspot is best known to ole timers as Greg’s Mexican Restaurant despite the fact that it has undergone a couple name changes since then. After 27 years as Greg’s, the name changed to Roberto’s before John Mitchell bought the place a little over a year ago and changed the name to John’s Mexican Restaurant. John is diligently working to restore the building to its old glory of 1953, renovating the bathrooms and raising the ceilings back to the original 9’ height and showcasing the original crown molding. With a tile floor and lots of booth seating, it still offers the flavor of yesteryear. He’s also preserving the history of this community gem by offering the same menu as Greg offered back in the 70s and it is every bit as good…he has the same recipes! With the first bite, I yearned for the stomach of my younger years when I could handle my food as spicy as they could serve it; but, alas, I resisted the urge to order extra jalapeno peppers. Upon arrival, guests are treated to the lightest, crispiest chips in town paired with “just the right amount of heat” salsa. For cheese lovers, the cheese dip is fantastic. You can also order Mexicali Dip with re-fried beans sour cream, cheese and black olives, Guacamole Dip or a bowl of Chili. Lunch is served from 10 – 2 p.m. and is served up fast and cheap at under $9 per special. For those “lunchers” with a super-sized appetite, John also offers All You Can Eat Specials at $9.99. The diners’ favorite is #93J, John’s House Special—chicken, steak and shrimp grilled with bell

pepper, onions and tomato served on a bed of Spanish rice and covered in cheese sauce and jalapeno peppers. Dinners are priced at under $15 and offer larger portions of the lunch fare. There is a special menu for Muchachos, age 12 and under, offering Mexican and American food. For diners who are looking for a bit of Americana in this Mexican restaurant, John offers burgers, fish, chicken and even a BLT. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. Try one of my favorites, Mexican Fried Ice Cream, served in a tortilla bowl covered in chocolate syrup, whipped cream and a cherry, or Torta Loca, a funnel cake covered with a generous caramel or chocolate drizzle. While there, keep your ears pealed for the whistle of a passing train and maybe you will win 20% off your meal. Each time the train passes, a wheel spins and whoever is sitting at the lucky numbered table gets a discount. John’s Mexican Restaurant is located at 312 S. First Street in Warner Robins and is open Monday-Saturday 109 p.m. For more information or to order take out, call 478329-0638. - JENNY MURR

THE INTERVIEW

Hey man, its Brad Evans. What’s going on? YO, YO this is Shock. Man, I just stumbled across this white kid covering “She’s always in My Hair” by Prince. And man, this kid is baking this sh**. Deangelo covered this song too, but I’m telling you the bass lines in this version is crazy. I’ve been bumping this all week and I finally had to reach out to this kid and tell him how good he is. I’ll send you the video so you can see it. Cool. How’s the wifey man? She’s good. I appreciate you writing the rhyme for her. She really appreciated that. Man I was thinking about that today. You know I was just trying to send positive energy that way for ya’ll. And I was really hoping it worked out. I was worried the ankle was broken and then I’d be like ‘AAAHHH.”

Rapper, producer, and musician ShockG is the mastermind behind multi-platinum artists Digital Underground. Formed in Oakland in the late '80s, DU dropped their first single, "Your Life's a Cartoon" b/w "Underwater Rimes," in 1988, generating sufficient notoriety to land a deal with Tommy Boy. “Underwater Rimes” went to #1 in Amsterdam, Holland. While the second single, "Doowutchyalike," charted in Europe, it was "The Humpty Dance" featuring Shock's Groucho-nosed alter ego, Humpty Hump-that propelled the group to platinum status in the US. Sex Packets (1990), the album that followed, rewrote the book for funk-based hip hop with its extensive use of George Clinton grooves, anticipating by two years the sound Dr. Dre would use to anchor The Chronic. '91 saw DU in the Chevy Chase/Dan Aykroyd comedy “Nothin' But Trouble,” performing the hit "Same Song" from “This is an EP Release.” This was also the recording & big-screen debut of 2pac, for whom Shock would later produce the hits "So Many Tears" & "I Get Around." DU has since dropped two indie discs, “Future Rhythm” (Critique 1996) & “Who Got the Gravy?” (Jake 1998), as well as “The Lost Files” (1999), a collection of rare & nonreleased tracks available exclusively through the group's website, ShockG.com. They continue to record & tour, having earned a reputation as a live act without peer on the hip hop club circuit. Shock G and Digital Underground will be headlining the hip-hop stage at this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival Street Party on Saturday, March 24th. The music will start at 5pm with Bo Ponder and Old Soul and Nappy Roots. The country stage will host headliner Rodney Atkins with the Gasoline Brothers. Tickets: $12 in advance; $20 day of show. When we called Shock G for an interview he called us right back. Unfortunately, Brad’s wife Meg had taken a spill and they were on their way to the emergency room, to look at what might be a broken ankle. The next morning, it was Shock G’s words that would let the world know that the couple was pregnant, when he posted on Facebook a rhyme he wrote for them. No worries Brad, Fam’s more important no doubt, I bet my life your wifey is a very special sprout, Good ta know it might go that her ankles only sprained Prayers that she heals fast widdout 2much pain, Specially since a door knock from a stork is in store With a very special gift who you both will adore. With the first page in their baby book created by this hip hop legend, Brad finally caught up with Shock G at his LA home a couple of days later. 18 MARCH 23 - APRIL 27, 2012

I know that you are a huge George Clinton fan. And I know you got to work with him a bit. Tell me about the first time you met George Clinton. The very first time I met George Clinton. Wow. Well we have do whatcha like out. We just sent another batch of songs for an album. They played the “Humpty Dance” for George at the studio, who was there working with De La Soul. They called me and they had put George on the phone. He was like ‘What’s up man. You got one here man, this humpty dance, it’s doing it man.’ And I was like WTF it’s George Clinton! I eventually met him again in Hollywood. He invited us to something and we got to pow wow a little bit. We had the concept of our Sons of the P record and we wanted George and Bootsy somewhere on the album cover. So we were meeting with him about that. We brought in six packs of beer and he didn’t’ even drink. He wasn’t hard on the coke or anything back then. It was real cool. But George is weird. We were so much younger than him and we were partying, but still we were all trying to find a place to curl up in the corner and go to sleep and George, he was the only one up at the Ping Pong table at like six in the morning. Still going! He’s extra terrestrial. You eventually went on to work with George on some other projects. Any crazy stories? There are so many. Well, we sealed the deal with that album Sons of P. He told us what he wanted us to do. We set up to go to the studio with him in Detroit. We were kind of having a debate over something. We were all into the recording. George walks in, and he transformed the room. It was the first time I saw him in his element. He had lyrics on a crumpled up huge piece of cardboard. It was like a TV box, it was shaped weird, and his lyrics were written all over it. His clothes were just wrinkled and dirty. Not like spilled on something dirty, like he may have been living in those m** F** dirty. He smelled awful. He had the real funk, you know what I mean. He had these cocaine clusters in his beard, cocaine clusters in his moustache, this m**f** had cocaine clusters in his ears. I didn’t know what to think when I saw him. Even though I was a fan. It was just crazy. He had on those orange camo pants, and roller blade boots on with no blades. His sweat stains had stains. But the moment he walked in, the whole energy changed. We were all taken to this other worldly place. We were on the Mother Ship and there was no getting off. We really were pretty typical Americans before that moment. After, we were something else. It’s really hard to explain. To have this alien-looking guy come in and to be so good at what he does. He just went into the vocal booth and did his thing in one take, and it was perfect. We were most definitely in awe. Knowing George is like being able to sport that dope new cologne that ‘aint even out yet. People are like “what is he wearing” and they’re like “that shit isn’t even on the market.” George isn’t on the market yet.

What would you do if you weren’t a rapper? Man that question just made me smile when you asked it. I’ve never thought about that. As a kid people paid me to draw stuff. When we started DJ’ing at my parents just for fun, people would start hiring us to do parties. From just rapping in the bedroom, we’d get hired to perform. I’ve always been doing art, and I’ve been lucky enough to make a living at it. If I wasn’t singing, I’d like to think I’d be playing the piano somewhere, but if not in music maybe I’d be a painter, or an interior decorator. Something to do with art, that’s for sure. Do you ever get tired of doing the Humpty Dance? What bugs me sometimes, is when we go to a show, and that’s all they want us to play. They asked us to close the BET awards in 2010 and do the Humpty Dance. I told them “no” just said doing the Humpty Dance again doesn’t help us. We’ve done that to death. You want to do something hot, let me sit at the piano, and sing some Tupac, let us do one other song, I’ll come up and blow the Humpty Dance. He didn’t want to at first. But he finally said yes, and for the first time ever, I got goose bumps. We went out and really blew it up. We ended up closing the awards show. It was a great time. Tell me about how you met Tupac? I heard that Tupac was reading poetry on a bus bench and was taken in by an older Jewish lady. She didn’t think he had a place to stay or something. Her husband was like what the hell? She told him to listen to Tupac’s poetry. He did and he let him stay. Eventually she finds our manager somehow. He tells her he needs to see a video. They didn’t have anything like that. So Tupac puts on this concert at this old Jewish lady’s house. They videotape it and send it to our manager. He’s pretty blown away, but he’s more of a business guy than a music guy so he calls me. I tell him to send the kid down and I’ll have him come and do some things and I’ll let him know what I think. I really didn’t think anything else about it. Then one day, we’re in the studio and there are people everywhere, people’s girlfriends, people’s kids etc. This kid comes in and he’s just beaming at me. ‘Hey Man you Shock G?’ I had forgotten about him coming. So I was like yeah I’m Shock. And he said ‘I’m Tupac.” I still didn’t remember so I sort of blew him off. Finally it came to me and I took him to a back room and got on the piano and listen to him spit. He was in a group called Strictly Dope at the time and he was spitting that stuff. He was pretty much above anything I’d heard on the West Coast at that point. NWA was just starting, Ice T was the only real Gangsta stuff out there at that time. I called our agent and told him that he was hot. Now I didn’t know he was TUPAC MACAVALLIAN THE DON hot. I just told him he was hot. So a lot of the guys in digital underground, including myself became producers on an album for him. That became 2pacalypse now. A lot of labels passed over him. Stats showed conscious rap was declining, they wanted more Gangsta stuff. 2pac was almost too conscious for them. When it got to be almost a year, he was offered a position with the New American Panthers in Atlanta to be a chairmen of the board or something. He was up in the ranks, with those people because of his parents and stuff. Our manager panicked because he thought we were going to lose him to a real job. Tupac was feeling like he was going to be dead if he hung around any longer. He asked us to take him on tour. We had eight neck straps on our tour. But we were part of a bigger bill with Public Enemy, Heavy D, and Queen Latifah. We couldn’t bring anyone else. I said he could take a dancers place but he’d have to do the humpty dance and carry equipment. I didn’t want to insult him but that was all we had, and he took it. So that was it. MEET THE BOSS

Tell our readers about your business. “I have been in business since April 2008; Flamingo Follies was first located on Russell Pkwy. I was dismayed at how the heart of our city was falling apart, and it's like that old saying ‘if you build it, they will come’. Now that I am Gena Jayne, I am focusing on the woman with discriminating tastes, the woman who wants to set herself apart with her style, so I am a sophisticated boutique with a home town feel.” Tell us about your family. I have 2 wonderful sons, Brandon and Chase and a loving husband, Chuck. I was born in WR and am blessed to have my family here in the area with me. They are all so supportive of my shop, in fact my Mother and Granny were over at the shop last week unpacking and hanging over 400 new pieces of clothes that just arrived! that's family love! Tell us about your quest to be listed in the Guinness World Book of Records. I am collecting flamingos and I am over half way to our goal~people can help by bringing by any flamingo large or small, when we make out Guiness Record, we will paint the City pink!

Warner Robins native, Gena Duboe, has impeccable taste, a big heart, and a love for her small town that just keeps on growing. So it’s only natural that she decided to open her “unique boutique” in the heart of Warner Robins at Commercial Circle. As the recent chair of the International City Festival, Gena is part of the Downtown Development Authority and she’s determined to dust off what is known as the “front porch” of RAFB to create a new gathering place for the community.

Is there something you would like to say to the community? “What I would love to say to the community is to let their voices be heard and be hands on with helping bring progress to the City, each and every one of us share in the responsibility to leave this earth a little better than we found it!” What would you like to see the city of WR do for the community? “I think the most important thing WR can do for it's community is to embrace it's diversity and celebrate the people and talent we have here and give these talents a place to grow a downtown!”

GET TO KNOW... Louise Warren

M

To be such a young age, Louise certainly has the songwriting ability that will take her far. “The Wind was inspired from my life,” says Warren. “I’m trying to find my place in this world and have found simply going with the flow works best.” How right she is. The impromptu acoustic set at Joshua’s Cup reminded me of the folk legends of the 60s and 70s. I could almost picture Louise playing alongside Joan Baez and Carole King. Joshua’s Cup has become a home away from home for the singer/songwriter. Being able to have a place to perform open mics not HEAR LOUISE... only gained her exposure in the March 23rd at the Macon music scene, but created Cherry Blossom Festival a place of comfort and familiarity. Walking beside Warren, I

acon has been home to top musical talents for decades; past and present artists have stimulated national appeal keeping our region in the spotlight. I was lucky enough to meet with singer/songwriter Louise Warren at Joshua’s Cup in Macon, and was treated to a semi-private show. As she played one of her original songs from her upcoming album “Lavender Sound”, entitled “The Wind”, she drew a small crowd of new fans.

“I guess it all started somewhere between Elvis and Pocahontas. Music excited me and set my imagination rolling. I sang into the tiny plastic microphone that came with a school-bus shaped cassette player that my grandmother had given me. In a childlike manner, I started changing words and notes and eventually the song morphed into something entirely new.” said singer/songwriter Louise Warren

realized they also see her as part of their family as well. Not only is Louise booking gigs all over Macon, she has made her way to Warner Robins. She recently performed at Bare Bulb Cafe located off Highway 96. This year proves to be a big one for Warren. As well as performing at the International City Festival, in Warner Robins, and on 13 WMAZ , Louise was also featured on the

website, Hellogiggles, co-founded by Zooey Deschanel, star of Fox’s New Girl as well as a musician and singer-songwriter. The song “Cherish” was featured on the site’s Video Chat Karaoke Series, Episode 35. On top of these accomplishments, Warren is currently in studio recording her first album. “My family has been incredible through everything” says Louise. “They support me to no end and I’m blessed.” At the age of 14, she found herself having an interest in learning to play the guitar. Once she started, she never put it down. To date, Warren has written over 200 songs. “I find inspiration hits me in the middle of the night. If I don’t write it down, it will stay with me until I do.” As I listened to her song, “Every Soldier”, I had to ask how she came to write it. “Every

Soldier is about how even the strongest person can run from love and life. We all have hard times and it’s okay to retreat every now and then,” Louise said. Every Solider also could be a song for those who are teased in school, as Warren can relate to such scenarios. “I have always been different and I was teased for it. But in the end, I feel it made me a better person.” If you want to catch a performance, you can find a listing of her gigs on her website at: www.louisewarrenmusic.com or become her friend on her Facebook page to keep up. n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
