EDITOR’S NOTES

D

by JENNY MURR

id you ever feel like your possessions possessed you? That you have become a slave to all the things that are supposed to make your life better? Do you rush to answer that ringing telephone? Have your clothes taken over the bedroom? Just how many pair of shoes does one person need? One can only watch one television at a time, but if you are like most, you have one in each room (and for some of you, that includes the bathroom! You know who you are). For a few months now, I feel like I am being pushed out of my house by my things. My closet is so full of old clothes that I’ve resorted to hanging a few outfits on a wall hook so I won’t get lost in the mess that lurks just on the other side of the closet door. I swear those clothes hanging so conveniently on my coat hook have begun taunting me. “Jenny,” they call, “We want to go home; please put us away.” It happens in the dead of night when I’m trying to sleep, I hear them talking about me. “She’s so lazy. Why can’t she get her act together?” they wonder; I wonder that myself. And it’s not just my clothes that haunt me. If it’s not the junk mail that hasn’t made its way to the trash can; it’s the craft project that I started but haven’t finished in over a year. They mock me…just sitting there daring me to do something about it.

STORY IDEAS AND COMMENTS As soon as I’ve had enough and decided to get myself organized, as soon as I make that first move toward purging these unwanted villains from my life, the phone rings and of course I have to answer it. Or a text comes from a friend and it would just be rude to ignore it for 30 minutes while I straighten up a little bit. And so I succumb to the torments of technology promising an exciting escape from the mundanity that is my life. That is until last Friday night. I lay in bed, enjoying a show that I had previously taped. A quiet buzz began to summon my attention to the chaos in my room; it quickly rose to a raucous din until I could ignore it no more. The timing was right—1 a.m.—perfect for a declaration of war (most people are asleep, no fear of an interrupting text). And so I cried out “Out, out you damn clothes!” I jumped to my feet, armed myself with garbage bags and began breaking the shackles of my possessions. Yes, I was a woman possessed…but no longer by my things! I’m happy to report that my closets are now clean; those clothes hang quietly where they belong. The junk mail has been trashed; and I’ve even purged most of those kitschy little dust collectors. Spring cleaning came early this year, thanks to an unseasonably warm season and a late night revolution.

LIVE THE ART OF CHOCOLATE

C

hocolate and our affection for it has dated to ancient times. Tribes of South America brewed stiff, unsweetened ceremonial beverages that induced a state of euphoria and something in the human constitution has never forgotten those first magical encounters. There is an entire nomenclature built around our collective obsession. So of course, when Valentine’s Day rolls around, and the sampler boxes begin to fly, we find new and wonderful ways to express our love and affection for all things chocolate. The Houston Arts Alliance, and the Perry Arts Center team up with co-chairs, Gena Brown DeBoe and Susan Verrochi this year to host an event that not only allows guests to sample the culinary fare of the area, but allows them to also experience the creative forces at work in our community. Organizers, volunteers, restauranteurs and caterers descend upon the Armory in Perry to bring to the public, an homage to all things chocolate! A tasting menu of bite sized delicacies from local food wizards will be available along with a silent auction, door prizes, curios and keepsakes available for purchase, and that’s just for starters. Dance troupes from the area, Dance USA and Dance Warner Robins, will be treating guests to ballroom styles as The Georgia Big Band plays on through the night. Guests are encouraged to join the pros on the floor and try a turn at a little swing here and a little salsa there. To liven up the joint, John Cornacchione will be heating up the brass, a

treat that many have come to enjoy in the mid-State as Cornacchione is among the elite musicians who perform and have retired from the Air Force Reserve Band. So many things are represented at the Art of Chocolate event that it is sure to appeal to anyone looking for a little bit of romance and a lot of “mmmm”. Though much is on display at the historic Armory, there is one thing every guest will have on their mind, and it wouldn’t take a shot in the dark to guess what that is. The chocolate featured at the event will run the gamut. From bite sized samples of hand made chocolate created by Terri Murray of Po Man’s Soul Food (best collards and mac and cheese in the area in this writer’s opinion), chocolate dipped key lime pie and chocolate bread pudding from A Perfect Pear to Brownie bites and a fourteen layer chocolate cake cut into tasty morsels from Simply Southern Sweets, a true gourmand will find something to amuse the discerning palate of a chocoholic. A cheese and fruit sampling will also be on stand-by for those who wish to cleanse the palate before diving back into the more luxe offerings. Take it all in and take home the memories this Valentine’s day, and in so doing support local business and talent that will bring such things to the culture of the Houston County area for many years to come. Tickets for the Art of Chocolate are available for purchase but are limited in number so be sure to reserve yours soon. Call (478)287-5262 to purchase or for more informaRACHEL HELIE tion. TREASURE HUNT ON THE GOLDEN ISLES PARKWAY n March 9-10, Golden Isles Parkway will become a Mecca for treasure hunters as communities along this peach-lined path to the coast participate in the 12th Annual The Peaches to the Beaches event. Georgia’s longest yard sale spans over 200 miles and features vendors selling everything from antiques and locally crafted items to traditional yard sale fare. Thousands of visitors will find spectacular sidewalk sales at downtown businesses and traditional yard sales offering handmade crafts, collectibles and pre-loved treasures. Communities like Perry benefit from this beloved event—vendors can make a little cash for those unwanted items while the town and businesses benefit in even more important ways. “We benefit from the economic impact from those traveling to and through Perry for the sale,” said Sheila Jones, Executive Director Perry Area Convention & Visitor Bureau. “We have vendors from out of the state that have come to sale their items as well as the shoppers are not only spending money with the yard sale vendors but they are eating in our restaurants, staying in our hotels, and buying gas and that effects our tax base in a great way. We also benefit from the exposure it gives our community for future visitation.” While traveling along Hwy 341, be sure to look for special “Official Vendor” signs which identify each official Peaches to Beaches yard sale site. Organizers ask shoppers to be sure to stop at the official vendor sites as the vendors pay a small fee to

O

participate which, in turn, makes it possible to keep the event returning and even growing. Be sure to pick up your shopping passport and have it stamped while visiting official participating communities. Then drop your passport off in an official drop box to qualify for the “shop til you drop” contest. Participating communities include Roberta, Fort Valley, Perry, Hawkinsville, Eastman, Helena, McRae, Lumber City, Hazlehurst, Graham, Baxley, Surrency, Odum, Screven, Jesup, Brunswick, St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island. The Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale is sponsored and organized by the Golden Isles Parkway Association, a membership organization that represents Businesses, Municipalities, Boards of Tourism, Chambers of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureaus and other organizations in towns and cities along and near the Golden Isles Parkway, US Highway 341. The event increases tourism and commerce for all communities along the way. According to Jones, all monies collected from vendor spaces sold are split between the local community organizer (Chamber or CVB) and the GIPA; 100% is used to promote the next year’s event. Official yard sale hours will be Friday – Saturday, 8am – 6pm, rain or shine. Check out more information on The Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale, by visiting www.peachestothebeaches.com. JENNY MURR

MEET THE BOSS

Shannon Harris, a Macon native who got into the insurance and financial planning game out of college often offered his clients some unique advice. “Yes, save your money, and put it away for retirement, but if you can find something you enjoy doing, then get busy making that happen.” It only took him a few years to take his own advice, and he bought a Swiss Hiking Company, called Alpine Adventure Trails Tours in 1997. Since 2006, Shannon has been guiding groups of people through the majestic Alps full time. What led you to Swiss Hiking? Well I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors, and my father Travis had actually been to Switzerland many times, so my

family came to know it through him. He actually went out with the fellow who started the company we ended up buying in 1997. Originally it was myself, my father and my brother Thad. My brother had a little boy and can’t make it over as much, so now-a-days it’s pretty much just me. The year we bought the company I went over for the summer and basically learned the lay of the land, hiked every day and went around meeting hotel owners.

G N I st N 1 PE B 2 O E F

Tell me about a typical hike. Our unique program provides hiking options for all abilities. Each day you have a choice of a moderate hike or a more strenuous hike. The group gathers for a brief meeting each evening after dinner when two hikes are presented for the following day. Guide One will describe in detail an easy to moderate hike that is limited in elevation gain and has a distance of six to nine miles. Those who choose Guide One will usually ride above the tree line by cable car or cog rail train and hike a moderate trail. Most hikes with Guide One are of variable length designed so you can elect to do a portion of the hike or the entire hike – thanks to the extensive Swiss and Austrian transportation network of trains and cable cars. If you walk three to four miles per day, three days a week for several weeks before the trip, you should find your hikes with Guide One thoroughly enjoyable. Guide Two will provide a more challenging hike - seven to twelve miles in length, with elevation gains of approximately 2,500 to 3,500 feet. Hikes with Guide Two take you to areas that can only be reached by foot or helicopter. In all the years I’ve led hikers in the Alps, no guest has ever said there was not enough hiking. The most common comment we receive is that their trip was the best hiking vacation they have ever had. Lunch for both groups is usually in small inns or mountain huts and, when possible, Groups One and Two will eat together. After completing the day’s hike you

return to the comforts of the inn for an evening of fine dining and a restful night sleeping in your private room with a private bath. The following day you awake to enjoy a bountiful buffet breakfast before starting the day’s new hike.

Why did you choose the Alps to start this company? I really love the glaciers. The big Ushaped valleys and the waterfalls. There really is just no place like it on earth. And it’s also one of the cleanest places you will ever visit. Even the huts we visit along the hiking trails have flushing toilets. Even for those who aren’t so outdoorsy it’s a really great chance to get outdoors. Alpine Adventure Trails Tours 6-Night Cost Starting at $2600 For more information call 1-888-478-4004

LIVE - WORK - PLAY IN HOUSTON COUNTY

DINING IT’S CRAWFUL, MONDAY!

I

t’s been a hectic week and you’re e looking for an escape—some place far away where the ocean breeze blows through your hair while you sip a tropical concoction. But, alas, your budget won’t allow for a trip to Jamaica and so you head down the street looking for something good to eat. All is not lost, while you may not be able to take that coveted vacation, you can still escape, if only for a short while. Island Paradise Bar & Grill provides the weary-hearted a taste of the Caribbean that is “crawful” (outrageously good)! The robust menu offers brunch, lunch, and dinner—all customized to delight your discriminating palate. Whether you like a mild sweet dish or something hot and spicy, Chef Kevin is happy to prepare your dish according to order. With hundreds of unique personal recipes, Kevin is sure to cook up fare guaranteed to keep you coming back for more. I am not a fan of extremely spicy food—if it makes my nose run…I’m not gonna eat it. So I was a bit apprehensive when placing my order. So I told him what I didn’t like and left the rest up to the chef. What I got was a dish that was so sumptuous that I can’t seem to get it out of my mind. I’ve been raving about the food and telling everyone who will listen about this place that has become my alltime favorite place to eat. “I’ve created a special dish for you,” Kevin said. “Grilled chicken bites, atop spicy fried rice served with a pineapple reduction.” It was as pretty to look at as it was delicious. Just enough spice to catch my attention, with a sweet sauce to keep the heat at bay…perfection! There is something for everyone. Lunch offers salads, sandwiches, soups and entrees to cover anyone’s desires. They even offer a $5 special for those of you on a budget. Mango BBQ boneless pork chops, jerk chicken, braised oxtails, fish run down, and coconut curry shrimp are just some of the dishes featured on the dinner menu. Pair any of your selections with some mango tea, tropical juices, or your choice of alcohol to finish your experience. A special kids menu is also available.

japanese cuisine in an intimate and casual setting. Despite the common reaction of distaste at the prospect of eating raw fish, sushi is actually a simple and delicious food that can easily be enjoyed by adults, children, vegetarians and even the extremely squeamish. Although sushi's history goes back to the 7th century, the popular form that is served in modern sushi bars came into popularity in 1820, Tokyo. The thin, toasted seaweed sheets, called Nori, used in rolled (maki) sushi are high in Vitamin A, B-complex, Niacin and Vitamin C. It is also good for digestion. The rice is low in fat and sodium free. The various are excellent sources of protein and minerals. So enjoy the health benefits of sushi, and enjoy the flavors and art form of this quick meal.

“If it wasn’t for music I wouldn’t have met Terri and not have kids now. Everything I have I owe to music.” – Mat Weber

When were you married? May 21, 1994. Both of our parents have been married a long time….coming up on 50 years together. What’s “Your Song”? I embarrassed her real bad in South Carolina. I picked up a 12 string guitar and started singing “Every Rose has its Thorn”…she got embarrassed and ran out of the store. Best way to make up—Just being sweet…and do housework. Our schedules—he does a lot around here. Favorite date or way to spend time together? We like to go to Zen or hang out here—he’s my best friend. Besides music, what are your common interests? Kids and sports. What are your professions? I work at Stantec Engineering Firm and Mat owns his own pool business. Tell me about your kids: Tara is 22; she was a cheerleader in High School and works at the Cantrell Center now. Arlie is 16 and the oldest boy, he plays Baseball & Football and he plays the drums. Jesse, 13, plays Baseball & Football and goes to Northside Middle School.

14 FEBRUARY 15 - MARCH 14, 2012

are full of romance; melodic lyrics of love fill the airwaves. But most people will tell you that in real life, rock and romance just don’t mix; unless, that is, you ask Mat and Terri Weber. After attending a Braves game, Terri and her friends stopped in at Rivalry’s for a quick drink; Mat was playing in the band, Dirty Sally, from Harrisburg, Pa. “I was not a groupie; I was a nice girl ,” Terri said, explaining her atypical behavior. “It was a fluke that I met him when I did. I never went out on a week night,” she said. “He looked really good on stage. I sent a friend of mine up to talk to him first. He was such a nice guy; he’s misperceived by a lot of people. I learned a big lesson from that. People still this day judge him by his hair and earrings.” Coming from a military family, Terri was scared to take Mat home to meet the folks. “It took me about a month to take him over there,” she said. “But my parents loved him—I was scared over nothing. He grows on people quick.” Mat’s band was on tour for the east coast and Warner Robins was a small stop in between larger gigs in the southeast. A month after they met, the band headed to Buford, SC. “She ended up taking the summer off to travel with us,” Mat said. Mat headed home after the tour and that’s when things began to heat up. “There were no cell phones or internet back then and when the tour ended we resorted to phone calls and letter writing. We blew up Delta flying back and forth; it got too expensive so I said let’s get married.” And they did in short order, a year after they met Mat and Terri tied the knot. That was 18 years and three kids ago. “She was an army brat and I was a Mama’s boy, so she moved to Pennsylvania for me. But she only lasted through two cold winters before she wanted to move back to

Georgia,” said Mat. Although he took a job as a Corrections Officer and shaved his head, the long haired rock and roller still lived deep inside. After several years, Terri encouraged him to start a band here. She moved her Corvette outside so he could turn the garage into a rehearsal studio and even came up with a name for the band. “It was New Years Eve and we had four couples over. We moved all furniture out of living room; one guy was playing guitar another was decorating tree and broke an ornament cutting two fingers, the guy playing drums was wearing jester hat and Mat was barefoot. I played around with the words…barefoot jester two fingers. Soon it became 2 Finger Jester.”

“It’s a hard life even though I’m not on road. The weekend grind alone consists of 67 shows plus we both have full time jobs, kids playing sports and daily life. Now I’m doing laundry, not really rock & roll anymore; life has changed quite a bit.” Mat said. “It’s the same results but the stuff in between gigs is more domesticated. I’ve become a Baseball/Football dad.” They’ve stuck it out—best friends to the end and, despite the dissonant chords that accompany a life of Rock and Roll; their relationship is one of harmony, peace and happiness. 2 Finger Jester is celebrating their 10th Anniversary show at the Hummingbird, in Macon, on Mat’s birthday February 18. n December, 2011, the Perry resident earned a degree in Biology and plans to attend graduate school to become a biology professor and researcher. Burgess was accepted into several summer programs, but chose the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which paid $5,000 in salary and additional funding to cover food, travel and accommodations. While working with the University of WisconsinMadison’s Integrated Biological Sciences-Summer Research Program, she was part of a research team that developed a patented method to reduce water pollution. The team developed a vaccine to change the nutrient requirements of chickens and possibly reduce environmental pollution associated with animal agriculture. The patent was approved and may potentially net $200 million a year. Burgess presented her findings in October at the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science conference in San Jose, Calif. and at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in November in St. Louis. She is currently working at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department in Dr. Jennifer King's Pharmacoanalytical laboratory. The lab focuses on the quantification of antiretroviral and antivirals to be used in configuring the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of these drugs to be used in clinical HIV trials, drug development, and toxicity studies. She will work there until she gets accepted into a Ph.D. program, which begins Fall 2012. Burgess is currently interviewing with UAB, Emory, Duke, Indiana Univ., and University of Wisconsin-Madison for a Ph.D. program.

SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS

Future looks bright for Perry High School / Ft. Valley State Alumnus “I think Perry High School set the foundation for my interest in science as a career. Mercer University has been named a finalist for support from ArtPlace, an unprecedented private-public collaboration of nine of the nation’s top foundations, eight federal agencies including the National Endowment for the Arts, and six of the nation’s largest banks. ArtPlace supports creative placemaking with grants and loans, research and advocacy. Mercer joins 128 other organizations in 68 cities working to transform their communities by driving vibrancy through investments in the arts. Mercer’s $750,000 funding request to ArtPlace would underwrite renovation of the former Tattnall Square Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of College and Oglethorpe Streets in the College Hill Corridor, for use as a community theatre and home for the University’s Theatre Department. The church property was donated to Mercer last year by the Flint River Presbytery, which owned the facility. Finalists were chosen for their potential to have a transformative impact on community vibrancy. ArtPlace expects to distribute $15 million in 2012. This year’s grant recipients will be announced in May. Last year, 34 organizations received a total of $11.5 million.

Phoenix’s passion for sports-entertainment began as a young girl, watching countless hours of WWE with her grandma on weekend mornings. Enrolling at Notre Dame High School in Elmira, N.Y., Phoenix began to blaze her own trail, becoming the first female on the wrestling team. But making it to WWE was a little more difficult … and college came first. Degree in hand, she threw caution to the wind and pursued her passion. Publisher Brad Evans talks to the wrestling diva from her home in Buffalo, NY.

It had to be a little strange for you, as a woman to want to wrestle. Well certainly when I started watching wrestling it wasn’t very common to see female wrestlers in the ring. But by the time I started really doing it, it was becoming more prevalent. But yeah, my parents resisted at first, for sure. When I came home and said “Hey you know how I was going to college, well I’ve decided to wrestle too.” They didn’t know what to think.

Beth Phoenix likes to talk a good game, boasting of her strength and dominance over all the Divas in the ring. And Phoenix backs her words up — it’s what Glamazons do. Ever since she was a little girl, she’s been commanding respect and powering her way through obstacles and challenges.

How did you break into wrestling? Well as a kid, as most wrestlers, I was just a huge fan. I watched wrestling all the time. When I went to college, I started doing independent wrestling events, and then I finally moved to Kentucky where WWE’s wrestling school is, and I started knocking on the door. Finally I was given and opportunity and I took it without hesitation.

ence, as a fan, and then had to run to the ring and become a wrestler. I can still remember my heart beating so fast. It was surreal. I knew at that point that I could do anything. How many days a year are you on the road? And how do you stay in shape on the road? We’re on the road probably 275-300 days a year. And it’s a huge challenge staying fit on the road. Just finding a place to work out is a challenge from hotel to hotel. You have to be very disciplined, and you have to really watch what you eat. So many wrestlers come into the big leagues so in shape and find out they can’t maintain. It’s really the hardest thing bout being a wrestler. How involved are you as far as “Ring Theatrics.” Do you write your own scenarios? Well I’m the sculptor and the paintbrush. When I’m in the ring, I’m in control, and believe me it’s an emotional rollercoaster. SEE BETH PHOENIX LIVE IN MACON SUNDAY, MARCH 4TH, MACON CENTREPLEX

ROCK BOTTOM HAS THE CHOPS TO BECOME MIDDLE GEORGIA’S PREMIER LIVE MUSIC VENUE

L

isten up Houston County, there’s a music revolution on the rise and you’re invited to join the cause! No longer do we have to schlep our way to Macon or Atlanta to enjoy an evening out; whether you love Rock, metal, Southern Metal, Hip Hop, Independent, Gangsta Rap, Punk, Country, or something more radical, chances are you will find it right here in your own backyard. “We offer all original music,” said owner Bob Johnson, “we don’t bring in cover bands. I’ve always thought this area was void of a place where metal and hip hop can play on the same stage.” Band centric and operated by local, working musicians, Rock Bottom music venue strives to bring a new experience to Warner Robins while providing local bands a platform to showcase their talent. “People who live in Warner Robins should be able to play in Warner Robins,” said staff member Ogre Johnson. But local bands aren’t the only target Johnson has in his sights. “I’ve always thought there were enough music fans in the area to warrant bringing in some national acts. Those larger bands, that are playing in Atlanta and headed to Florida, could easily make a stop to play here.” “The place is better than the Masquerade,” said Nick, member of local band Holocaustion. “The level of interaction with the audience is better than the big venues.” You can get your groove on in the “live” room, which provides an unobstructed standing/cheering/headbanging/moshing area directly in front of the stage. The smoke-free room hosts performers and fans, while a separate room contains a bar showcasing a lacquered case containing concert tickets circa 1976 to the present (be sure to check out the Led Zeppelin ticket to a Macon

performance). While the walls started out purposefully bare, it’s only a matter of time until they are full of memorabilia, candid shots, and painted murals by local artists, telling the story of the local music scene.

Since opening in October, the venue has hosted a vast array of music every weekend and has acts booked solid through April. “I’m just glad to finally have a rock club in Middle Georgia again,” posted Joe Garrett on the Rock Bottom Facebook page. “There are so many talented young musicians in this area. Now they finally have a way to cut their teeth and get some onstage experience…” The venue is gaining in popularity as the word spreads throughout the community; and, although it is temporarily a dry establishment, over 100 patrons stop by to catch a show. “We hope to serve alcohol soon,” Johnson said. “We’ve done the paperwork and are just waiting for the license.” Although some bands prefer to wait until the liquor license is in hand, there hasn’t been a shortage of bands playing at Rock Bottom.

In fact, the lack of a liquor license has been an unexpected gift for some; it has afforded teenage rockers the chance to see acts that they don’t ordinarily have access to, giving parents and their kids a chance to bond in a new way. Johnson encourages the younger set to enjoy the abundant all ages shows while they last, and plans to continue to offer all age shows in the future (limited to specific days and times). As an audio engineer and owner of Insurrection Sound, a full service independent record label, Johnson has the music chops to make Rock Bottom the premiere music venue in Middle Georgia. The recording studio provides onsite recordings of live performances and helps Indie Musicians record demos and full length albums, promote, and produce their original works. To date, the studio has hosted local bands Southern Psykology, Profits of Doom, Justin Heat, Plethra, Seven year Siege, Ian Malcom, Loose Skrews, Blacktop Blonde, Deepest Gray, Gangsta Wu, The John Stanley Project, and more. “We’ve recorded a ton of bands with great results,” Johnson said. “I’ve always wanted to own a music venue. So when this place opened up, it was too good to pass up. It was just a natural progression of what I was already doing.” Rock Bottom is located at 1619 Moody Rd (at the corner of S. Pleasant Hill). Shows start at 8 p.m. and the cover is $7; shows are all ages until they get their liquor license when all ages shows will be held a couple times a month. For information, call 478-2134762 or check their Facebook page (rockbottomga) for lineups. JENNY MURR

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
