HNIB’s 27th Annual Girls Summer Showcase Welcome Players, Parents, Scouts To The 2021 Event
By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
elcome players, parents, college scouts and fans to Hockey Night in Boston’s 27th annual Girls Summer Showcase, a top-flight tournament consisting of players from many different states and Canada. Last summer’s tournament saw a strong Northern New England entry win its first HNIB title, pulling away late for a 31 win over Mass. Public/Catholic in a great championship game. This year’s Showcase will certainly boast some exciting upand-down action, as the Showcase will field a record 20 teams, reflecting the amazing growth of womens hockey in this country Empire, Mass Public/Catholic, Metro, Mid-Atlantic and Rhode Island will be in the Red Division. The Bears Tier 1 North, Eastern, New England, NE Connecticut and Suburban make up the White Division. Bears Tier 1 South, Central, Coastal, Northeast and Southern NE are in the Blue Division, and Atlantic, Lakes Region, Mass Preps, Northern New England and Southeast will compete in the Green Division. Each team will play four first-round games, with the playoff rounds/crossover games taking place on Sunday, August 8. . The top team in each Division will enter into the semifinals and vie for the Girls Summer Showcase title. The remaining teams - 2nd place through 5th place in each division - will play a cross-over “playoff’ game. With the amazing growth womens hockey has seen, HNIB decided in 1995 to add the Girls Summer Showcase to its summer activities. 2021 marks the historic 47th year of HNIB’s nationally-known boys tournament, and the amazing 27th year of our Girls Summer Showcase. The Massachusetts Preps are in their 12th summer and were put together and will be coached by Jenelle Ries from Brooks School. The same formula held true for Frank Pagliuca, the coach of St. Mary’s of Lynn, who has put together a solid club representing the Massachusetts Public/Catholic schools for several years now. HNIB held a pair of Festivals, at the Bog in Kingston, MA, and at the Haverhill Valley Forum, where players were chosen to finalize seven teams, including Mid-Atlantic, coached by Corey Cooper of Hotchkiss, Southeast, coached by Canton Tourney Welcome HNIB Staff Showcase Schedule Showcase History 2010 Tourney Review HNIB Coaches Girls Showcase Profiles Atlantic Central Coastal

High’s Dennis Aldrich, New England, headed up by Melissa Tetreau of Phillips Andover, Northeast, coached by Winchester’s Craig Seabury, Metro, coached by Worcester State’s Eliza Kelley, Coastal, headed by Boston College goaltending coach Moe Bradley, and Suburban, coached by former pro player Maddie Evangelous. Lawrence Academy coach Kevin Potter has put together the Eastern squad for the eighth straight summer. Central was put together and will be coached by Kevin Zifcak of Worcester Academy. Portsmouth Abbey head coach Kurt Carter has again constructed his two teams - Atlantic and Rhode Island - to compete. Berwick’s Kelly Souza is the architect of the Northern New England club. Back for their second summers at the HNIB Showcase after impressive debuts in 2020 are Southern New England, headed by Corey Cooper, Empire, which will be led by Millbrook head coach Erica Shapey, and Lakes Region, constructed by Chris Ladabouche. A new entry this summer to keep an eye on is NE Connecticut, put together by Pomfret School coach Shane Dunphy, and coached by Ari Shocket. And rounding out this year’s field will be two teams from the Black Bears Tier 1 Academy, entered by Alex Moody and featuring players from several different states. HNIB wishes good luck to all the teams. Have fun playing some competitive hockey.

n a sense, the pressure is off for Worcester Academy’s senior defenseman Lauren Potvin – she has committed to Sacred Heart College in Fairfield, CT, freeing her up to fully focus on her final campaign with the Hilltoppers. “Making an early commitment has certainly taken some stress off my shoulders because of how pressuring the recruiting process can get. My commitment has not changed the fact that I'm heading into the season with the same goal as every year, which is to win the championship and play my hardest with my team,” said Potvin, a key cog for coach Kevin Zifcak. The decision to attend Sacred Heart came easily. “I chose Sacred Heart because of the close team dynamic, strong academics, and competitive hockey. I felt at home as soon as I stepped on campus,” said Potvin, who is leaning toward Exercise Science as a possible major. Her GPA is 3.4. All things considered, Worcester Academy did a remarkable job navigating its way through the pandemic last season. “COVID was a big adjustment for the team, but with coach Zifcak's commitment and our supportive team dynamic, we made the best out of it. At the end of the day, we all just wanted to play and were grateful and even more fired up for any chance we had to get on the ice together, “ Potvin said. This season presents a challenge of a different sort – the unpredictability of youth. “We are a younger team full of high-energy players that are all eager to compete. We push each other and will always expect everyone's best effort. I am very excited to be playing with this group and am fully confident in our team's skill and work ethic this season,” Potvin said with confidence. She said speed and high energy are key elements of her success (Continued On Page 17)

Public/Catholic’s Driscoll Keeping Brother’s Love For Hockey Going
B
SENIOR JESSICA DRISCOLL
WILL
BE AN OFFENSIVE LEADER FOR THE
PUBLIC/CATHOLIC SQUAD.
MASS.
By Kevin Doyle - HNIB
y all accounts, Jessica Driscoll and her older brother Ryan had the best sort of sibling relationship – each was the other’s fiercest supporter and Ryan, older by two years, always had his sister’s back. Ryan, who starred in two sports at Central Catholic HS, tragically died in a car accident in June of 2019. When the Methuen/Tewksbury and Central Catholic girls teams squared off in the annual Ryan Driscoll Memorial Game this past January, Jessica honored her brother in the best way she could by scoring a hat trick and adding two assists in the Red Rangers’ 6-1 win. “I constantly followed Ryan and, as he would say, ‘copied’ him. As children, we would be in our driveway for hours shooting pucks and just trying to improve our skills. He was always giving me pointers and trying to help me improve as a player,” Jessica said. “After I lost Ryan, his influence on my career became even greater. In the past, I played hockey because of my love for the sport. After his accident, I began playing for him in order to continue his love for the game through me. Each time I step on the ice, Ryan is on my mind and I am able to play my heart out for him. I truly believe he is constantly watching over me and making me into the player that I am today. Without his influence, I never would have started playing hockey in the first place,” she continued. Jessica served as the Red Rangers’ sole captain as a junior and anticipates some sense of normalcy after the havoc wreaked by COVID-19 this past season. For example, the team was unable to use its locker room during the pandemic but still managed a respectable 7-5-0 record. “I think that one of the main keys to making sure that everyone’s ready to go for a full season is gaining a strong chemistry on the ice. Without that locker room friendship off the ice, the on ice chemistry is much harder to achieve. I hope to achieve that chemistry in this season,” she noted. “Going into my senior year, I would also love to see us make a deep run into the playoffs and possibly even make it to the Garden again.” (Continued On Page 17)

Jessica Driscoll A Solid Offensive Performer (Continued From Page 16)
The off-season regimen includes keeping everyone on the ice and working on improving their skills as well as working on strength and conditioning in the weight room. One of the top scorers in Massachusetts, Driscoll has worked tirelessly to improve the velocity of her shot. As a sophomore she accounted for 23-9-32 totals and followed with a 13-5-18 line in essentially a half season this past year and should score her 100th career point early this winter, She said she is working hard to improve what a number of coaches have described as “an ugly stride – even though (it) works out for me personally.” She has clearly embraced her team leadership role. “I believe that I was able to help the younger players get used to varsity level play and help them feel comfortable on the team. I believe that I was also able to give support to the team and keep their spirits high even when we were losing or not playing well,” Driscoll explained. She can’t thank her parents enough for their unwavering support and “the thousands of miles” they drove all over New England so she could pursue her passion. “It was practically a rite of passage to learn how to play hockey, or at least how to skate. My father (Dennis) was a hockey goalie throughout his childhood, in high school and college as well. Although my mother (Lisa) never played hockey she was incredibly supportive of my decision to begin playing boys hockey at a very young age. She was much happier when I decided to make the switch over to girls’ hockey later. My parents’ continued support helped me to develop into the player I am today,” she said. Her favorite hockey memory occurred when M/T upset previously undefeated Austin Prep in double OT, 2-1, to win the 2019 MIAA Division One title at TD Garden. “The excitement that we all felt running across the ice to celebrate with one another was the greatest feeling and one none of us will ever forget,” she said. She skates once again for Mass/Public-Catholic team in this week’s Summer Showcase. She has not made a college commitment and, while personally not having a program preference, she does not want to venture not too far from home. She hopes to major in either Nursing or Criminal Justice and owns a 4.2 GPA.
Lauren Potvin Keys Central Attack (Continued From Page 15)
“Playing prep has taught me how to play upbeat and with intensity whenever I get on the ice. Being a smaller player has always required extra speed to make up for it but I know at the Division 1 level speed alone won't be enough and my size and strength have to continue to get better,” she noted. She counts her father and coach Zifcak as her biggest influences. “My Dad has taught me the accountability needed to play hockey at a high level and I will always be grateful that he introduced me to this game that we both love. Coach Zifcak has always been fully dedicated to making us better players; his coaching and constant support on and off the ice has impacted me a lot,” she said. Potvin’s favorite hockey memory dates back to her days as a Mite and “my Dad and I would drive to Pomfret to play while the sun was still rising.” Another favorite was a team road trip to the Hill School in Pennsylvania. “We all bonded during the trip and you could definitely tell it set the tone for a supportive and close team for the rest of the season,” she recalled. Potvin is a three-year Girls Summer Showcase veteran and will skate for the Central club this week. She anticipates a high level of competition as she prepares for her final season at WA.

Karo A Key In Mass. Public/Catholic Charge Forward Ready For A Big Senior Year At Hingham
A
By Kevin Doyle - HNIB
lthough Hingham has been treading water around the .500 mark for the last two seasons, senior standout Kathryn Karo hopes the 2020 stunning firstround upset of No. 1 seeded HPNA in the D1 State Tournament was a harbinger of things to come. Ranked 32nd in the draw, the Harborwomen pulled off the upset in OT, 54. Karo, one of the state’s elite scorers, twice tied the game and carries a stat line of 82-55137 in 62 career games into her final season. “That night was so special to me and my team because our hard work throughout the season finally paid off. Even though it was only the first round of the tournament, it felt like we just won the championship,” Karo said. The expectations for this season are understandably higher. “We have a strong group of freshmen who are eager to play and be a part of the team. I know the other upperclassmen and I are excited to mentor and guide them throughout their first year of high school. As for our returning players who have experience and confidence, we look to be stronger and to play at a high compete level,” she said. Karo is hopeful of a return to some sense of normalcy after the chaos created by COVID-19 last season.
KATHRYN KARO MASS PUBLIC/CATHOLIC STAR FORWARD
HINGHAM’S KATHRYN KARO HEADS INTO HER SENIOR SEASON WITH 137 CAREER POINTS FOR THE HARBORWOMEN.
“Getting dressed in a tent outside or in a parking lot in below freezing temperatures was nowhere near ideal for us, Even though it was hard, we made the most of it. We found ways to make it special and bond as a team, like playing silly games during our off-ice warm ups. We were able to play 14 games, where we managed to develop and grow as a team,” she said. Her ability to score and sense of how to create opportunities for teammates comes from countless hours of work in the family basement as well as taking strength and conditioning workouts more seriously and doing them more frequently. "Since my freshman season, I’ve improved on all aspects of my game during offseason skill sessions and workouts. I’ve gotten stronger and faster every year,” said Karo, who considers her work ethic, hockey IQ, and being a supportive teammate to be her strengths. She also understands the need for continued improvement in every aspect of her game in order to advance to the next level. She has always admired and been influenced by members of the U.S. Women’s National Team, including current stars Hilary Knight and Kendall Coyne. “When I played U10 town hockey, a few of the girls, like Alex Carpenter, Kacey Bellamy, and Brianne McLaughlin came to run a practice at Pilgrim Arena and I’ve looked up to them ever since,” Karo said. A three-year Summer Showcase selection, she will skate for the Mass. Public Catholic squad this week and aspires to play D1 college hockey. “My goal is to find a school that I love and can call my second home. I want to feel comfortable and fit in with the school and people. I also want to find a team and coach that believe in me and will push me to be the best player I can be. I’d also love to pursue a career in medicine and health, something along the lines of a physician's assistant or nurse practitioner,” she said. She carries a 3.83 GPA at Hingham.

t. Paul’s School standout defenseman Kristina Allard beat the clock when she committed to Northeastern University as a freshman and is glad she did. The rule regarding communication and verbal offers by Division 1 coaches was changed to June 15 after the recruit’s sophomore year shortly thereafter. “I was fortunate enough to commit right before the NCAA rule change. Before committing, I was hounded with recruiting calls nearly every night. A lot of weight lifted off my shoulders, both in the classroom and on the ice. Knowing where I’ll be playing allows me to concentrate on my long-term goals,” Allard said. In her second year as a captain, Allard sees the program continuing as a primary contender under veteran head coach Heather Farrell. The Big Red won the 2020 D1 Patsy Odden Tournament championship.
St Paul’s looks strong for the 2021+ seasons. SPS has recruited several talented new players and we are expecting to do well in the NEPSAC tournament this coming season,” Allard offered. Following a year when COVID-19 curtailed, or wiped out, schedules, Allard is hoping for some sense of normalcy this season. “I think for all student athletes across the globe it was a difficult year. Although I do have to say I was feeling quite lucky during this because we were at least able to play [eight games]. Other prep schools in New England were not able to even touch the ice! I think St. Paul’s was able to make the most of it and I’m very appreciative of the people that were able to make it happen during this tough time,” she said. Speed, skating and toughness drive her game, integral components to her ability to create offensive zone chances. Scoring and stickhandling are skills she cited as needing improvement. She has a multitude of hockey memories but the one that tops them all was winning a 2020 State Championship while playing for Assabet Valley. “We only had 12 skaters on our team. It’s one of the biggest underdog moments I’ve ever been a part of. I learned a lot about how to face adversity and to overcome it with teamwork and dedication and is something I will truly never forget,” she said. A strong family unit has supported her every step of the way. “The biggest influence thus far has been my mom and my dad. They both have been the biggest driver in helping me to mature as a person and a player. They understand the level of hockey of which I want to obtain and they are always pushing me to improve. They have sacrificed so much to get me to where I am now and to help me improve, in order to reach my dreams. They’re the best!” Allard said. “My brother, Daven, has done so much to support me and continues to always put a smile on my face. It seems like he always knew the right thing to say. One thing that has always stuck with me that I remember him telling me was that, ‘The great ones are humble’. My Grandfather has been at almost every single thing I have done up to this (Continued On Page 20)

Bishopp A Rock On Team Eastern Blue Line
T

he time to make a commitment will arrive soon enough but the process is now under way for Deerfield Academy’s stellar junior defenseman Diana Bishopp. She is on the clock, so to speak. “I purposely have held college commitment discussions off until now to continue to evaluate schools,” Bishopp said, noting the disruptive impact of COVID-19 on players born in 2004. “I have now been talking to a number of coaches since I will be going into my junior year. My goal is to commit to a D1 school that has high-level academics as well. I plan on going into business but it is still early so I am not yet set on my major.” Bishopp anticipates the Big Green will have a successful season. The team won each of the five games it played in 202021.“We have very high expectations this year as coach (Brooke) Fernandez is always looking to bring in talented players and we train as much as we can,” she said. “All the players have been very active in the off-season but COVID did change the outlook of what club team everyone plays on. We most likely will take extra time in the fall to prep for the season. Wherever she decides to enroll, that program will be getting an elite, multi-sport athlete. "New England prep schools became a very appealing option as they allowed me to play all my sports and still focus on hockey at a high school AND top National AAA level. As a Freshman I ended up being able to start for the varsity soccer, hockey and softball teams at Deerfield. Being the only freshman to do so, I was recognized as a Hale Scholar which is awarded to four individuals per class who have shown excellence in their sports, school, and character,” Bishopp said. Crunch the numbers since she began playing competitive hockey 10 years ago and Bishopp’s stat line of 72-265-337 to go with a plus-366 in 422 games as a defenseman takes a moment or two to digest. It’s no wonder she studies the legendary Bobby Orr, who forever changed how the position was played more than 50 years ago. In describing her own game, Bishopp cites her playmaking, the ability to read opponent’s breakout passes, and functioning (Continued From Page 19)
point. He enjoys being at games as much as I do. He is one of my biggest supporters and no matter how I play always sees the good in how I did. Outside of hockey he always helps me in school and in every situation he always has my back,” she continued. A four-year Summer Showcase veteran, Allard is skating for the Northern New England and expects a competitive week of games. “This tournament helps me develop skills at a fast pace before returning to St. Paul’s. A lot of prep school girls attend this high level tournament so it exposes me to the talent these schools have,” she said. Longer term, Allard is focused on earning a roster spot on the

She credits her parents for their support at all of her games and practices, regardless of the sport, as well as in the classroom. Her GPA currently sits at 4.0. Interestingly, her favorite hockey memory dates back to her first appearnce for Eastern in the Summer Showcase. My ultimate goal is to be a coach and to play Olympic hockey so I don’t know what major will assist those goals best,” she said. Allard attended Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston, NH before transferring to St. Paul’s for the 2018-19 academic year. An all-around athlete, she set seven individual track records at Sanborn, was 2018’s New Hampshire State Heptathlon champion and qualified for the New Balance Outdoor National Meet. She also owns five individual track marks at St. Paul’s.

ith some key veterans and some impressive young talent, Metro could be a factor this summer.
Metro will be coached this summer by Eliza Kelley, who is the head coach at Worcester State University.
Plenty of offense for Metro should come from Williston Northampton sophomore Emily Hamann and Phillips Andover junior Gretchen Swartz, both back for another summer. Seniors Morgan Cunningham from King Philip and Morgan Peritz, a key for new varsity program Pope Francis this past year, also bring lots of experience to the offense.
