HOCKEY NIGHT IN BOSTON

ockey Night In Boston welcomes you to our 44th annual Summer Showcase being held again this year at the Valley Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston). Action in the 20-team Summer Showcase begins on Wednesday, July 25th with a unique format sure to please the scouts in attendance. Each of the 20 teams will play five games against five different opponents over a three-day period. College, Junior, Prep and NHL Scouts will be able to see prospects play two times each day on Thursday and Friday. Five select teams of Massachusetts /RI top players – Greater Boston, South Shore/RI, Southern NE, North Shore, Middlesex - were chosen in April/May. Players were invited by the HNIB staff based upon their previous winter’s scholastic hockey season and HNIB participation. HNIB unveiled its first Southeast Festival in early June that produced several players for both the South Shore and Southern New England entries.

The 35th annual New YorkConnecticut-Mid-Atlantic camp featuring over 90 players took place from June 1517. The players competed for spots on two teams in the HNIB Showcase: Mid Atlantic and Connecticut/NY. Gilmour Academy (OH) hockey director John Malloy helped put together a club from the Midwest region The Midwest team will feature many players from the State of Ohio. Over 120 skaters signed up for the 34th annual Northern New England camp in Haverhill from June 8th -10th. The result was two select teams, Northern New England and Northeast, that represent players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Late in June, 30-35 players were drafted from the HNIB High School Division tryouts for participation in the major showcase (from a turnout of 100 partcipants), including the Suburban entry. Eighteen teams of sophomores (over 325 players) competed in the gigantic and unique HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament from July 8-12. Also, over 350 junior high players partici-

pated in their own festival as a stepping stone to their initial exposure at HNIB. The final Sophomore All Stars was chosen after the tournament’s All-Star Games on July 13th. Returning at HNIB this summer is Mass West, put together by Kevin Kervick of the Springfield Rifles program, and the Canadian Preps, coached by James LeBlanc. East Coast, compiled by coach Matt Lavallee, should be competitive once again as well. Back in the Showcase is Central, coached by Scot Somerville, and making its HNIB debut is Michigan, put together by Chris Slater of the the Michigan Elite Brigade hockey program. Two at-large teams ready to show their stuff are Tri-State and Merrimack Valley, consisting of players from the New England region. And Global Selects, featuring a solid nucleus of players from Sweden, is back to defend its title won in 2017

Playmaker Transitions Smoothly To Dexter By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

W

hile the South Shore team has a new look this year, Aidan Connolly of Marshfield, MA will be joined by some familiar faces. His dad, long-time Marshfield High coach Dan Connolly, will coach the team and his Dexter-Southfield teammate John McElaney will join him on the roster. After piling up 26 goals and 88 points in two seasons at Marshfield, the younger Connolly made a smooth transition to Dexter-Southfield, tallying up 11-26-37 numbers for the New England Prep Elite Tournament semifinalist that finished 21-5-2 and ranked No. 4 in the final HNIB News Boys Prep Top 15 poll.

“Overall, the transition went smoothly. My two years of Marshfield really prepared me for my experience at Dexter Southfield. On the ice, Marshfield coaches continuously challenged me during practices and games. I was pushed past my limits while also working on fundamental skills every day. As a result, I reached the high pace I needed for success in prep school hockey,” Connolly said. Middlesex’s Ryan Adjusts Quickly To Prep Level

A

By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

fter leaving Arlington (MA) High School following his key role in the Spy Ponders’ first Massachusetts Division 1A championship season in 2017, Cam Ryan found himself with a new set of challenges upon arriving at Tilton School for the 2017-18 school year. “Academically it was a challenge but the small class sizes were helpful for me. The environment that Tilton provided helped my communication and critical thinking skills,” said Ryan, who has a 3.0 GPA. “(And) the transition on the ice was an eye-opening experience.” In other words, there was a daunting jump up to be made from Massachusetts high school hockey. “It was clear to me the speed and skills were at a level I was not accustomed to. The fast paced game was an adjustment, but I feel like I had the speed to adapt to it. Also, I was caught off guard by the toughness and strength of our opponents. It gave me the respect and drive to compete at that level,” Ryan said.

ON THE COVER

Tilton coach Brooks McQuade certainly appreciates that mind-set. “Cam made an immediate impact as a first-year player. He is relentless on the forecheck which plays extremely well to our style of play. I never have to question his work ethic and drive to be engaged in the play. What makes him such a good player and excellent college prospect is his dedication to getting better on and off the ice. He is fully committed to our strength and conditioning program and it shows in his ability to physically compete and win battles. He plays with an edge and a level of confidence that we like in our players,” McQuade said. Ryan clearly has embraced the culture at Tilton. “I can tell you playing with the team this past year was truly an honor. The different types of backgrounds and countries our players brought to our locker room created a special type of family,” he said. Ryan is confident Tilton will improve upon its 11-141 record of a year ago. “I have full confidence in Coach McQuade. He has brought a close-knit group to Tilton in his years as head coach. Although I haven’t played with the incoming players, I can only expect that he has chosen teammates that have the skill and the will to win. With that said, I believe we can be very successful next year,” Ryan observed. The opinions and advice of those who have coached him along the way are important to him. (Continued On Page 29)

Pope Francis hit the final minute of regulation in the championship game at TD Garden with a 1-0 lead against a favored B.C. High team that handled them in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, 6-1. After being relegated to the Elimination Bracket, the Cardinals regrouped, surged through the bracket, and countered with a brilliant defensive effort in the title game only to see the Eagles tie it with 52 seconds left in regulation and win it at 1:30 of OT, 2-1. “It was very frustrating – losing in the fashion we lost that game is the nightmare you get the night before the game,” Tavella said. “It was extremely frustrating to be so close and to have [them tie] the game in the last 50 seconds. The whole team just really tried to take the positives of the experience and we’re grateful that we were there,” added Cocchi. That loss has steeled the duo’s resolve to return to TD Garden. Only seven players graduated from a 21-5-3 squad. “The expectation is no less than a Super 8 title. After being in The Garden, we know exactly what we have to do. Everybody is on board and intends on getting it done. It was an unbelievable experience to play in front of that many people and something I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Cocchi, who set up the Cardinals’ only goal in the title game and finished third

on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 48 points. “My expectations are a Super 8 ring and nothing less than that. You play to win a championship and that’s going tobe our goal from the start,” agreed Tavella, who contributed 15 goals and 42 points to last season’s most potent Massachusetts D1 attack. Both are creative, high-energy types who play with speed and are capable of turning opposing defensemen inside out. Their personal success last year was a collective effort that included classmate and linemate Makem Demers. The three collaborated for 51 goals and 137 points. “I think the keys to my success last season were definitely moving the puck quickly and finding seams that not many other players could find,” said the 5-7, 155-pound Cocchi. “I think my strengths are definitely being smart with the puck and having a good mindset for the game. I can work on getting a little bigger and stronger and getting my shot harder.” While Connor McDavid is his favorite player, Cocchi closely studies Nathan Gerbe who has played parts of nine seasons in the NHL despite standing only 54.

“He’s a small guy who got it done at an elite level,” Cocchi said. Tavella relies on speed and vision and views himself as a pass-first player, although he’s working to become more balanced. “I can improve my finishing. I had more assists that goals last season and would like to even the two out to help the team win. I had great players on my line who had a lot to do with my success,” he said. “I think I’ve always played like this my whole life. I’m not the biggest guy, so I play a high energy game, always moving my feet.” He emulates the Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron as “a leader on and off the ice, a two-way player who will do anything to help his team win whether or not he’s hurt.” The two are excited to suit up for Mass West this week. “I’m real happy that I’m getting to play with Jon again. He really fits my game,” Cocchi said. “I want to play anywhere, at the D1 or D3 level, at a school that’s going to play me,” said Cocchi. (Continued On Page 29)

s transitions go, Thomas Manty’s shift from the Massachusetts high school ranks to prep school hockey was about as impressive as they come. The former Central Catholic standout scored twice in his Phillips Andover debut last December, leading the Big Blue to a 5-2 season-opening victory against Choate. “I was really excited to play in that first game. From the minute I was accepted into the school it was all I was looking forward to. So the excitement built up to a high. I also wanted to prove to people that I was ready for prep hockey,” said Manty, who emerged as one of Phillips’ top threats last season with 15 goals and 28 points. Manty’s last game at Central was the 2017 2-1 OT loss to Arlington in the Massachusetts Division 1A championship game at TD Garden. It was his OT strike that propelled the Raiders past BC High, 1-0, in the semifinals. “It was definitely a tough feeling (to lose), but looking back it’s amazing to see what our team accomplished after losing our top scorer of two years (Blackhawks draft pick and Boston University bound Jake Wise) to the U.S. National Development Program. Everyone seemed to pick up their involvement with the team on and off the ice. It was a great year and playing at The Garden is something we will never forget,” said Manty, who had 19 goals and 32 points in his final two seasons for Central. Manty will always carry the memories of his time at Central but felt the time was right to make the move to PA. “When I heard I had the chance to get into Phillips Andover, I didn’t hesitate to apply. The decision was not solely on hockey; it had a lot to do with the academics. I did very well academically at Central and I was ready to take on a new challenge at Andover,” said Manty, who carries a 3.8 GPA and is interested in Math.

Heavy Workload Breeds Confidence For NNE’s Tardif

he two years he spent honing his game with Seacoast Spartans U18 was well worth it for goaltender Nevin Tardif of Dunstable, MA.

“I always had great teammates. We were not the most skilled teams but I felt as though we worked very hard and played with some of the top competition around. My first year we won the State Championship and, on paper, we were not expected to touch or even scare any of the teams at Regionals. What I took out of that experience is that they were just a collection of highly skilled players but that a team is more important,” Tardif said. One thing he discovered was his capacity to carry a heavy workload. He logged more than 1600 minutes in the cage last winter.

NEVIN TARDIF - NNE GOALTENDER

“I feel the more work I got, the better I played. In games where I faced 60 shots, and was more confident that in a game where I faced 15 shots,” he pointed out. Tardif said he also learned to manage the mental aspect of the game. “When you're coming into a big weekend and you're asked to play three games in less then 24 hours you learn to relax and go with the flow. You learn to treat your body right to be at your best and to just get excited about the challenge ahead. But, when playing a big workload like that, it is nice when you have great support and last year my goalie partners where nothing but the best and the most supportive people,” he said. Tardif will carry those lessons learned with him to the Islanders HC. It remains to be determined whether he will play for the Premier or NCDC team but he said “I could not be more excited for this experience I have ahead of me.” Tardif was an HNIB Summer Showcase Top Goaltender award winner year ago. In addition to his demonstrated ability to handle enormous workloads, he cites his rebound control as a weapon to relieve stressful situations. He is working to improve his footwork and ability to handle the puck. He’s a big fan of the Bruins’ (Continued On Page 29)

Tuukka Rask. “I mean, you gotta’ love the hometown guy. I love to watch hockey, but I don’t feel as though that only one person has influenced me. I play a lot like a little goalie in terms of how far I come out of the net. I just feel the more aggressive I am, the scarier I make it on shooters,” he said. He has high expectations of himself and for this year’s Northern New England squad in the Summer Showcase. “I plan on going all the way. It was cool to win a personal award last year, but there is nothing like a reward you win as a team. The game of hockey is not a personal sport; if you make

Without his guidance, coaching, and support I would not be the player I am today,” Connolly said. Familiarity with a teammate is beneficial in a short duration event such as the Summer Showcase. “John McElaney is a great player and teammate. He plays with energy and is always in the right position. With my dad on the bench, there will be a lot of fluency with the systems he will be organizing and with the plays that he will want us to run during the games,” Connolly said. As for the future, the 16-year-old is taking the long view and keeping all options open, including added seasoning at the Junior level. “There is no route that is right or wrong. If I need the extra year of development before playing college hockey I will take that opportunity to work on my game and become a stronger player,” he said. Playing in the Northeast is a goal but, most importantly, Connolly said “I would like to go to a college where I will receive a great education and a degree so that I can be successful in life after hockey.”

a mistake there is always a teammate to help. So my goal is to win the Best Goalie, but also to be the best team in the tournament,” he said. Though uncertain where he wants to play at the next level Tardif wants to make an impact on the ice and in the room wherever he winds up. His long-term vision is clear, starting with his interest in Sports Management. “I hope to be a part of this great sport for as long as I can, whether it be coaching, scouting or the business side. More than anything I want to help other kids make their dreams come true,” he said.

Ryan Expecting Fun Summer (Continued From Page 25)

“I have been told by coaches that I respect, that I am a speedy playmaker. I go into the dirty areas, work on getting possession of the puck, and then making plays with it,” he said, adding “I need to work on everything, but most of all I need to focus on improving my shot and getting stronger on the puck.” He emulates the Sharks’ Marian Hossa’s style as “a speedy winger that will throw his body around and can rip the puck in the cage. He gives his team an extra edge” but Sidney Crosby is his favorite player because “he is so powerful and strong on the puck, which catches opponents off guard since he’s so fast.” Ryan will skate for the Middlesex entry this week. “I have done Hockey Night in Boston for a bunch of years now. I’m expecting nothing but good competition, and some fun with previous hockey friends,” he said. Depending on the options available to him upon graduating from Tilton, Ryan would consider Junior hockey if needed and is philosophical about the future. “My goal is to play at a Division One school, but I understand that many others are shooting for the same goal,” he said.

“Max is a great teammate and linemate; we have great chemistry on and off the ice. I couldn’t ask for a better player to play with during the Showcase. My expectation is to win the Showcase and have fun doing it,” Tavella added. Both will weigh all available options as to whether they will head to prep school or play Junior hockey upon graduation from Pope Francis. The long-term plan for each is to identify the stepping stone that leads to the proper fit for college. “Obviously everyone’s dream is to play D1, so that is my goal,” said Tavella.

exter Southfield junior John McElaney is looking forward to skating with the HNIB Souths Shore entry Southeast this week. Having he prep school teammate Aidan Connolly on the squad only enhances the experience. “AC is a great kid from a great family. It’s definitely helpful having him to play with and hang around with between games. We made a lot of memories together during the year and I look forward to making a few more during this showcase,” said McElaney, who hails from Walpole, MA. With 18 goals and 32 points, the junior has put together two strong seasons, including a 9-9-18 line last year when DS reached the Prep Elite semifinals. “One of the keys to our team’s success was buying in and listening to our coaches. Danny Donato, Brian McColgan and Billy Kelleher have been around the game for a long time and they know what it takes to win. Playing unselfish, disciplined hockey in the systems that they implemented

allowed our team to have a strong year. Our senior leadership was a huge piece of our success on and off the ice as they showed the effort and attention to detail that it takes to do well at the prep school level,” McElaney said. He is eager for the upcoming season and the goal is clear. “The expectations at Dexter Southfield are to win. Whether it is a preseason game in mid-November or the Cushing Tournament, every game is a must win. Having made it to the Elite 8 semifinals two years in a row are great accomplishments. However, our goal each and every year is to win the Elite 8,” said McElaney. This past season’s quarterfinal playoff win against Milton Academy on home ice was especially gratifying. “The entire school came out and watched the boys get a big win. Winning in front of classmates is always a great feeling and makes the locker room atmosphere even more special,” McElaney said. He counts his dad, Ed McElaney, Pat

Leary of the Boston Jr. Terriers, Ian Moran and Donato as primary influences. “My dad always encourages making plays and moving the puck if there is someone in a better spot than you. He showed me how to see the ice from a young age whether it was on the bench with a marker and board or on the car ride home going over all types of situations that occurred in the game,” McElaney said. “I have been lucky enough to have played for Pat Leary (and) he re-enforced the same playmaking and creative style of hockey as my dad. Ian Moran also has been influence on my game. Ian has been coaching skates that I have gone to since eighth grade and I will continue to go to as long as he does them. Danny Donato has taught me to focus on the small details and proper positioning that it takes to play at the next level. He has always been there to tell me what I need to do to improve my game and play at the best of my ability,” he added. McElaney plays a defensively reliable game whose chief attributes are his speed, vision and playmaking ability. He trains constantly to get bigger, faster and stronger. “I can play in all situations and will do whatever it takes to help the team earn a victory. I consider myself a student of the game that loves to show up day in and day out and compete. I pride myself on getting in the weight room and getting bigger, faster, and stronger in order to help the team win,” said (Continued On Page 32)

Bright Future Ahead For CT/NY’s Bencivengo Forward Heads To Brooks After All-State Campaign at Notre Dame (WH) By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

s it pertained to hockey, June 4th was a pretty normal day for Michael Bencivengo – until it became surreal following a skills session during which had a chance to skate with Adam Erne of the Tampa Bay Lightning. While he was on the ice, and unbeknownst to him, Bencivengo had been selected by the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s inaugural American Draft. “I was asking him (Erne) questions about where he played growing up and coincidentally he told me that he played in the QMJHL. When I got in the car, I looked at my phone and there were several text messages from coaches congratulating me on the draft. It was an amazing feeling to be selected by Sherbrooke Phoenix and I am honored to be chosen by them,” Bencivengo said. A Connecticut All-State First Team selection this past year as a sophomore at Notre Dame of West Haven, Bencivengo will transfer to The

Brooks School this year as a repeat sophomore. Following his first appearance in The Summer Showcase, he plans to attend the Sherbrooke Phoenix camp in August. “Brooks is an incredible school with an impressive reputation. Coach (Dave) Ries is a great coach, and when I met him I instantly liked his coaching philosophy and him as a person. I am really looking forward to learning from him, helping the team in any way that I can and I am very excited about the future,” said. Bencivengo, who compiled a 3.7 GPA while at Notre Dame. He amassed 14 goals and 34 points last season, leading a young Green Knights’ squad to the Connecticut SCC/SWC Division 1 Tournament final. “I have had a great two years at Notre Dame West Haven. I had great coaches and teammates, so anything that I achieved personally could not have happened without them. We had a very young team and as a sophomore I just tried to lead by my play on the ice,” he added. Speed, creativity and a willingness to compete for every puck are hallmarks of Bencivengo’s game. admires Connor McDavid (speed and playmaking) and Jonathan Toews (character and leadership). “I like to have the puck through the neutral zone and be a playmaker. I also like to challenge myself by competing against top players and I think that has helped me develop over my career. I am also very dedicated to off-ice training and each year that helps me

more and more when I get on the ice,” Bencivengo said. He credits Chris Gragnano of Total Hockey Development with identifying and refining areas of his game that need improvement. “He is great because he is very technical and can breakdown every aspect of my game. He has helped by challenging me with edge work, shooting and passing drills that are outside my comfort zone,” Bencivengo said.

His parents have been unwavering in their support. “I have a younger brother that plays hockey too and my parents have always supported us and sacrificed a lot so that we can continue to play. Hockey is a huge part of my life and without my parents support I would not have these opportunities,” he said. Bencivengo arrives at his first Summer Showcase with an open mind, eager to compete with and against top competition. He is hopeful of playing D1 hockey upon graduation from Brooks. He grew up attending Yale and Quinnipiac games and acknowledges that “at that level any team is a great team.”

He said he would happily play Junior hockey upon graduating from Dexter Southfield if necessary. “I am taking it one day at a time right now and enjoying the ride. Coach Donato has preached ‘go to the dance with the girl that wants to go with you.’ I want to go to the school that shows great interest in me. I want to go somewhere where I can play a key role in the team’s success. Ideally I would love to receive a great education while playing at the highest level possible,” he concluded.

NNE’s Solomon A True Travelling Man Forward To Bring His Talents To NAHL This Season By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

rowing up in North Carolina, the only option for those wishing to play high-level hockey is to travel – a lot. Chris Solomon understands and accepts that. This past season Solomon led the Tier 1 Elite U-18 Victory Honda team of Plymouth Township, MI in scoring with 17 goals and 32 points. This year he will head to North Richland Hills, TX to skate for the Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League. The 6-0, 185-pound forward returns to this year’s Summer Showcase as a member of the Northern New England squad after skating with the Sweden Selects in 2017. “Growing up playing hockey in the south, there weren’t really any local teams to play for like there are in Michigan, so we had to drive and fly around the country pretty much every other weekend. I’m pretty used to all the travel from years of that, but I definitely won’t miss the 12-hour car rides back and forth

from Detroit,” Solomon said. He carries with him a suitcase full of memories, among them a Florida district title with the Junior Canes in U14 year, a trip to Nationals in San Jose in 2016, an opportunity to stay at former NHL player Todd Bertuzzi’s house while attending a Junior Grizzlies boot camp in Michigan, and Victory Honda’s trip to Arizona this past season. Solomon enjoyed what he considers to be a breakout season a year ago. “I came into the year in great shape and with lots of confidence. We had an amazing coaching staff led by Coach (Brian) Burke. They helped me in many ways and gave me every opportunity to succeed throughout the year. I had some great teammates as well and it was a very fun year,” Solomon said. He is eager to transition to the NAHL. “When you move up a level, the players are always going to be faster and stronger than before. There aren’t really any weak links on a team like in youth hockey. I do think I’m ready to make the step and that if I continue to train and work hard this summer, I can make a relatively smooth transition,” he observed. Solomon considers himself fortunate to have been mentored by a number of outstanding coaches and former NHL players along the way, noting all of them had impacts on his development. He models his game after the Washington Capitals’ TJ Oshie. “Oshie is probably my favorite player. He plays a hard game every night and has a really nice finishing touch. Being a huge Hurricanes fan, I like pretty much all of them too, including Sebastian Aho, Jaccob Slavin, and Elias Lindholm,” Solomon said. An offensive-minded player,

CHRIS SOLOMON - NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND HEADING TO LONE STAR BRAHMAS (NAHL)

Solomon relies on his hands in close quarters, possesses a strong shot and carves out space in front of the net. Improving his skating, especially edges and first-step explosiveness, is a priority this offseason. He is looking forward to returning to the Summer Showcase. “I expect it to be a very competitive tournament, just as it was last year. My goals are to continue to get exposure to colleges as well as getting in some games before the (NAHL) season,” said Solomon, who carries a 4.43 GPA and enjoys studying history. He will billet with a host family during his time with the Brahmas, the NAHL’s 2017 Robertson Cup champion and 2018 South Division runner-up and Robertson Cup finalist. Beyond that, Solomon is keeping his options open, saying he hopes to play at “any D1 school with good hockey and good academics. I know that’s a pretty generic answer but at this point I’d be open to all opportunities.”

Courchesne A Key For NNE

Talented Forward Will Test NCDC Waters With Islanders

By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

s he shifts to the Islanders HC in the NCDC this season, Jonathan Courchesne understands the importance of his season with the Seacoast Prep program a year ago. “My year at Seacoast was a big year for me development-wise. As a younger guy I had a lot of teammates to look up to and talk to about their personal success and how they achieved their goals. As the year went on I continued improving the weak parts of my game with my coaches and teammates which allowed me to keep up with the competition and overall have a great season,” said Courchesne, who previously played at Holderness and racked up 22-24-46 totals last season. The move to the Islanders represents the logical next step in the career path for the Springfield, VT resident. “It is a very competitive league and had a lot of success in its first year. I chose the Islanders because they are a respected organization and I felt having them on my resume would tremendously help me throughout the rest of my hockey career,” Courchesne said. “As a newcomer I expect to have to earn my place on the team and play my role as a teammate to help win another championship. My overall goal for this season is to compete hard for another NCDC title as well as earn a college commitment,” he added.

His favorite hockey memory? Time spent with his parents. “Before I was old enough to drive I relied on my parents to take me to every practice and every game. They sacrificed a lot for me to be able to play hockey and it wasn’t until I got older that I realized how important the time I spent with them was,” he said. At 5-9, 176 pounds, Courchesne admires the Islanders’ stellar rookie Mathew Barzal as a role model. Courchesne relies on his natural speed to create space and opportunities and works tirelessly to improve his on-ice vision and anticipation and to refine his hockey IQ. “I play a very physical game in all three zones and in order to be a fierce competitor at the next level I need to be able to see all of the ice and use my abilities to make the right play,” he said. “My style of play has been mainly influenced by my father. He demonstrated a strict work ethic throughout my life and I have been emulating his determination ever since. My physicality and grit result from having him as a positive influence for my whole life.” Courchesne returns to the Northern New England entry in this year’s Summer Showcase and plans to display the improvements in his overall game. “I hope to have another successful tournament and to overall just show what I am capable of,” he said. Courchesne carries a 3.45 GPA with interests in Math and Microeconomics and figures to be on the radar of any number of programs. “As a kid from Vermont I have always wanted to play for UVM. As I got older I began to follow Northeastern and would also love to play there. To play at either school would be a childhood dream come true and this has been my motivation,” he said.

Senior Josh Barton (12-20-32), who is skating for the South Shore entry this week, returns for his fourth varsity campaign as the Hawks’ top scorer. “Our keys for last year were playing all season as a team, all players performing their roles, and not trying to do too much. We had a great team bond and would do anything needed to get a win,” Barton said. Indeed, Xaverian showed remarkable persistence and pulled out its fair share of games last season while finishing 11-3-2 against nonleague competition. The Hawks welcome back six of their top seven marksmen as they prepare for the rigors of the Catholic Conference, considered by most to be Massachusetts’ premier league. With a couple of league programs facing transition seasons, Xaverian could position itself to contend for the league title and beyond.

Xaverian Star A Key To South Shore Offensive Attack

“The goal is to qualify and win the Super 8 (Division 1A) Tournament. We have a strong group of returning forwards and plan to build on our successes of last year,” said Barton, who hails from Weymouth and ranks having the chance to play Malden Catholic at Fenway Park as a sophomore as his favorite memory. “It was a once in a lifetime moment.” Strong on the puck, Barton uses size to his advantage as an aggressive two-way center equally adept on both the power play and penalty kill. He said his coaches at every level have contributed to his overall develJOSH BARTON - SOUTH SHORE opment and style of play. He admires the play-making and puck protection abilities of Massachusetts native Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres as well as the creativity of former Red Wings’ star Pavel Datsyuk. Of his own game, Barton said: “My strengths as a player are being a good puck mover, creating lots of opportunities for my teammates to score, and being very coachable. I also have a strong shot, can see the open ice, and take pride in winning the majority of my faceoffs. I can continue to improve in the defensive zone and start better breakouts to create more offense.” He is eager for the opportunity to skate with South Shore this week. “The goal and expectation is to play well and hopefully have a strong showing while reconnecting with some of my prior teammates,” he said. The National Honor Society student has made the honor roll each semester of high school and carries a 4.53 GPA on a weighted 5.0 scale. He was selected as a National Hispanic Scholar in 2017 and is interested in Math and Science. He also served as an assistant in the Braintree Municipal Golf Course Special Needs Golf Program in 2017 and was an assistant instructor in the Weymouth Little League’s Rookie Division in 2017. Whether he pursues prep school or plays Junior hockey prior to college remains to be determined. While he prefers to remain in the Northeast, Barton said he is open to any and all opportunities. Given his credentials, it seems likely there will be a number to consider.

rowing up in North Carolina requires commitment and travel to play for competitive programs – lots of travel. Just ask Deerfield Academy senior forward Sean McAvoy, who joined the TPH Thunder AAA program based in Tennessee after completing his second Peewee season with his hometown Charlotte (NC) Junior Checkers. The Thunder had players from Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville and Florida during McAvoy’s three years with the program. “We practiced in Atlanta (3 hours by car) or Nashville (7 hours by car) on the weekends that we didn’t have games. There were not many strong teams in the south, so we traveled to Detroit, Chicago, St Louis and Boston for the majority of our games. We flew because the drive was too far. Sometimes teams came to Nashville or Atlanta to play, but even then I had to travel several hours from Charlotte. I missed a lot of school because of the travel involved, but TPH Thunder was a good program with really good coaches and players,” McAvoy recalled. McAvoy eventually followed the lead of players from the South who headed North before him, researching boarding schools before settling on Deerfield. “I visited several schools but ultimately decided on Deerfield because of the coaches and the players and students I met on my visits. I’m still very happy with my choice. I feel like it’s been a great fit for me,” said the 18-year-old, a 5-9, 165-pound left winger who has accumulated 12 goals and 32 points over the past two seasons. The transition to the prep school game took time. It didn’t help that McAvoy was the youngest player on the team as a freshman. “It was difficult to earn ice-time and dif-

ficult to not be afraid to make mistakes. As I went on to sophomore and junior year, I took on a more impactful role, and I think that came from mental and physical maturity. The first year was more difficult than I expected but just took patience and hard work and time. If anything the limited playing time freshman year made me more determined to work hard and try to get better,” he said. McAvoy’s travels have produced great memories and many friends across the hockey spectrum. “Winning the Flood Marr Tournament my sophomore year at Deerfield is my favorite memory. I also have good memories of playing at Nationals with my TPH Bantam team and playing for my Mid-Fairfield U18 (Midget) team. I have many close friends from all these teams,” he said. Speed, skating and tenacity are

McAvoy’s strong suits. He works tirelessly to improve his shot. “My tenacity and hard work on and off the ice help me compete hard for pucks and in the corners. Every shift, I try to focus on winning battles and playing hard on the puck,” he said. He studies the Bruins’ Brad Marchand, saying “I try to play like him without doing some of the things that can get him in trouble with the refs. I like him because he’s a smaller player but doesn’t take anything from anybody. And he makes plays.” McAvoy credits his Bantam coach at TPH Thunder for holding him accountable and teaching how to play the game the right way, a message that has been reinforced by Deerfield coach Tim McVaugh. “Both coaches taught me to play hard while also being a good teammate by supporting my teammates and playing as a team,” McAvoy said. McAvoy laces them up for Mass West this week. He is unfamiliar with the team, but knows how he will approach the event. “I want to play the right way and be accountable to my coach and my teammates. I hope our team competes hard every shift in every game. My personal goal is to be a good teammate by competing hard every shift,” he said. McAvoy has been an honor student throughout his time at Deerfield with interests in Math and Computer Science. College doors are sure to open. Finding the right fit will be the challenge. “I have visited a lot of schools and met with several college coaches. My hope is to end up at a school with a good hockey program with very strong academics,” he said.

North’s Chingris Keeps Andover HS Confident Kuchar said Chingris never takes a day off. “We were impressed as a staff watching him progress and preparing himself to be the Number One. His compete level at practice was off the charts. He practiced everyday like he was the starter when Zach was here. I think it helped both of them,” Kuchar said. “Off the ice Cole is as quiet as they come. On the ice his team feels the confidence he has and has played with that same compete level because of Cole.”

s far as debut seasons go, they simply don’t get much better than the one Cole Chingris put together for Andover (MA) High School in 2017-18. While posting a stat line of 1.32 gaa/.940 save pct./8 SO, Chingris anchored the Golden Warriors’ charge to the program’s first Division 1-A Tournament. In the process, he stretched Andover’s streak of All-Scholastics at the position to four straight years. “We’ve been in a position to win a lot hockey games the last four years because of our goaltending. Cole has been a continuation of that legacy,” said Andover coach Chris Kuchar. “Cole stepped right in last year after being Zach Laramie’s understudy for two years, and from Day One commanded the starting role.” Andover endured a disjointed campaign when the coaching staff was placed on administrative leave for approximately three weeks during a state investigation triggered by unsubstantiated charges of player neglect. The team’s response was memorable. “What stands out to me is how our

team was able to overcome adversity when we were put in a tough position. The guys really came together while our coaches were on leave and ultimately had a lot of success because of it. What really resonates with me is how we won our final four games of the regular season when our coaches came back with only allowing one goal. That four-game stretch was a big reason why we made it to the Super 8,” Chingris said. The Golden Warriors were the tournament’s No. 5 seed, bowing out of the double-elimination event with a pair of OT losses. “The feeling when we found out that we made the 1A Tournament was excitement. Our whole team was together at a house and there was a lot of energy,” Chingris said. Chingris said his focus throughout the season was to keep Andover in position to win every game. “I had confidence in myself as well as my teammates. I am proud of my performance this past season and I think my stats were a testament to my success,” he said.

Chingris plays aggressively at the top of the crease, owns a strong glove, and excels against breakaways and credits his coaches at Stop It Goaltending for his technical acumen. He is working to improve his puck handling skills and plans to become more vocal with his defensemen. “My favorite NHL goalie is Jonathan Quick because he is very athletic and plays an acrobatic style of goalie where he will do whatever it takes to stop the puck,” Chingris said. His goals for his senior year at Andover are ambitious. “The expectations are to get back where we were last season and get further in the Division 1A Tournament. I think this team has what it takes to win our league (MVC/DCL One) and be one of the biggest threats in the state,” Chingris said. “We had a young team last year and we will be even younger this year. Cole will be relied upon once again to put us in a position to win going into the third period. Based on what he’s done so far, I’m looking forward to watching his final year of high school hockey,” Kuchar said. A 3.0 student, Chingris plans to take a PG year at prep school and is hopeful to play D1 college hockey at a Hockey East school. “He’s a great young man. He has the ability to play at the next level and his future is bright,” Kuchar concluded.

Hilfiker A Leader On Mid-Atlantic Blue Line New Hampton Next For NJ Native

M

By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

id-Atlantic defenseman Will Hilfiker of Middletown, NJ played a key role last season as a relatively young Christian Brothers Academy Colts club arrived ahead of schedule, bucking the odds to finish a surprising 17-9-2 at the highest level of New Jersey hockey. CBA reached the semifinals of the NJSIAA Non-Public Tournament, where it fell to Delbarton, and ranked fourth in Hockey Night In Boston’s final New Jersey poll. “Each of our four lines played their roles and competed against New Jersey’s top teams. Also, the coaching at Christian Brothers Academy has always been excellent and it was a big factor in this year’s success, said Hilfiker, a 6-1, 185-pounder who doesn’t turn 17 until next month, and was a Sophomore All Star at HNIB last summer. He credited his ability to stay focused and pay attention to detail contributed to a season that saw him emerge as a staple on CBA’s back line and resulted in all-star recognition. However, Hilfiker has since made the decision to move on to New Hampton School. “I feel that New Hampton will provide an environment for me to excel both academically and athletically. Prep hockey is extremely competitive (and) most underclassmen are not ready to make the transition to a top prep team. Playing at New Hampton under coach Casey Kesselring will be a key component in my development in these crucial years, said Hilfiker, who had a strong showing with the Sophomore All-Stars at The Summer Showcase a year ago and backed that up with his play at CBA. Hilfiker also played for the Jersey WILL HILFIKER - MID-ATLANTIC Shore Whalers (5-16-21 at three levels last year) and was selected by the Connecticut Jr. Rangers in the 2018 NCDC Entry Draft. He said he has been training rigorously to meet the expected dual challenges of adjusting to the increased speed and physicality at the prep level. Hilfiker said his Jersey Shore Whalers coaches Rob Cherella and Mark Rivera encouraged the offensive style he aspires to while remaining cognizant of adjusting to every situation throughout the course of a game. Not surprisingly he admires NHL defensemen Kris Letang of Pittsburgh and John Carlson of Washington. “They both have the ability to make plays and put the puck in the net, Hilfiker said. He pinpointed his skating, hockey IQ and defensive play as his strengths and continues to work tirelessly to improve his shot, strength and quickness. He is looking forward to returning to this year’s Summer Showcase. “I expect a high skill and compete level, as it is every year. As for playing with Mid-Atlantic I am excited to play against other players from different regions, he said. Hilfiker carries a 3.2 GPA and enjoys Math and Science. He aims to play at the Division One level for a school possessing a good balance of academics and athletics.

NNE’s Jagger Benson Ready For Prep Hockey

By Kevin Doyle - HNIB

n opting to leave Malden Catholic, Jagger Benson passed up Junior hockey and sought a prep school that would enhance his development in the classroom and on the ice. He ultimately settled on the Tilton School in Tilton, NH. “I thought it was time to challenge myself more at the prep level and the unique challenges that boarding school will bring. I am really looking forward to taking different electives, the small class size, and the structure that Tilton will provide. As to hockey, I have been playing my whole life and I look forward to helping Tilton in any way I can,” said Benson, a native of Lynnfield, MA. Tilton coach Brooks McQuade is eager to work with Benson, who plans to play baseball as well. “Jagger is an extremely athletic kid – he can play football, hockey, baseball, you name it! He is an offensive defensemen with confidence to make the first move against the oncoming forechecker. He should adjust well to the pace of play and the speed that is the prep level. Jagger has size to his advantage with a long reach. Our staff really looks forward to working with him,” McQuade said. Benson departs MC with fond memories despite the frustration of a 2017-18 season that saw the five-time Massachusetts Division 1A champions (2011-14, 2016) miss the post-season for the first time in years. “I enjoyed my time at MC. (Former) coach (John) McLean, and the whole staff was great and helped me develop. I am thankful for all the great teammates and faculty that I met along the way and helped me grow as a person,” he said. “Playing at Frozen Fenway was certainly fun and playing in those Super 8 games was a blast. Being with my friends and teammates everyday at school and living hockey is what I enjoyed the most.” “(Last season) was frustrating for the team, myself individually, and the whole community at MC. There is such a great hockey tradition at MC. It seemed like we could never get it going. We would win and then lose tough games, which was hard. Personally, it was frustrating to play through a season with a broken finger,” he added. Still, there were lessons learned, such as focusing on controlling what you can. “I had such high expectations for the team and myself. We fell short, but only through failure can we grow as athletes and people. I just keep growing as a hockey player. It is a motivating feeling once the shock is over and I am determined to improve my weak areas and not feel that way again,” Benson said. A center until age 13, Benson dropped back to defense at the suggestion of his former coach Dan Ronan, who taught him the nuances of the position. Benson’s dad, a former Merrimack College defenseman, played a major role in the transition. “My dad has had the biggest influence on my style. I think he secretly wanted me to play D one day but wanted me to grow up as a center playing a complete game. He was obsessed with making sure I could skate backwards at a young age just as fast as forward, pivots, spin moves, one touch slap shots. He always wanted the D to skate the puck and play possession game and know what to do before the puck comes to you. He is realistic and honest, I appreciate everything he has done for me,” Benson

said. It is understandable then, as a puck-moving defenseman with refined offensive skills, Benson studies current NHL rearguards Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith and PK Subban, among others. “I love to retrieve the puck and get it going the other way quickly and then join the rush. They all love to retrieve the puck, make that first guy miss, and go with it. They also defend with their stick and feet and lay the body when the opportunities are there,” he noted. Benson is working to improve his in-zone coverage and on improving his judgment by simplifying his approach. “Sometimes I am trying to do too much. My goal is to turn decision-making into one of my strengths,” he said. He views the Summer Showcase as an opportunity to meet players he’ll be competing with and against this coming season and understands he has the chance to put himself on “as many radar screens as I can.” Moving forward, he views Junior hockey as the next logical step toward the goal of playing in college. His older sister, a highly recruited soccer player, has provided sound advice. “She always tells me to look for a program where the coaches and athletics want to invest in you, where they see potential in you as an athlete and a person. I would like to play for a coach who has confidence in me and at a program where my style fits into their philosophy and approach to the game,” he concluded.

Compete Level Will Propel Team’s Chances

By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB team to keep an eye on this week is Northeast, which has a nice blend of talent to work with. Tasked with the job of molding that talent will be Brooks McQuade, the head coach at the Tilton School. Scoring should come from a variety of sources. Senior Egan Schmitt (53 pts) was a first team all-stater in Vermont for Burr

& Burton this past season, while Spaulding sparkplug Tyler Murray (42 pts) earned second team All State honors in Vermont and is moving on to CP Dynamo this winter. California native Max Eckstein, a junior, comes highly regarded as he will be at Brewster Academy in the fall. Postgrad Ryan Harrigan will play for coach McQuade at Tilton after a starry career at Scituate (MA) HS.

A returning HNIB Showcase player is senior Evan Parent from Vermont’s Spaulding HS ready for a key forward role. Junior Cooper Leland (53 pts), from Maine’s Hampden Academy, had a banner sophomore season and will open some eyes. A trio of juniors who all figure prominently in the offensive plans at Bishop Guertin for the upcoming season - Aaron Pratt, Patrick Madden and Benjamin Young - will be offensive contributors for this Northeast club. Senior Patrick Vetter is a catalyst in the scoring department at St. Thomas Aquinas HS. Junior Griffen Bono is also off to Tilton School and hopes to impress coach McQuade here at HNIB.
