Not long ago, families and communities would sit together and give thanks for all they had. Be it love, the harvest, or the new born child, there was a constant sense of inner peace. When we graciously receive enriching gifts, it establishes a stable sense that mandates peace of mind and heart. Gratitude is a potent medicine in the kit to curb illness. he year of 2021 for many Countries is setting itself up as a unique landmark situation never seen before. The U.S. is #1 in the world in virus challenges, reactions, and impact. Article 7 of the United Nations Convention on Human Rights explicitly states no “… one shall be subjected without his (her) free consent to medical or scientific experimentation.”1 In the America US Supreme Court, it is depicted: “The right to be free of unwanted physical invasions has been recognized as an integral part of the individual’s constitutional freedoms” – United States v. Charters (4th Circuit, 1987). Further it is stated that “the forcible injection of medication into a non-consenting person’s body represents a substantial interference with that person’s liberty” – Washington v. Harper (Supreme Court, 1990). 2 Following these Court “points of reference” and in-depth updates, being “vaccinated” is a private and personal choice backed by law.

eanna Won was a guest a decade ago, who faced a frightening diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Diligently applying the Hippocrates lifestyle, she reversed it, but her work, of over 3 decades, took her abroad and she slipped off the diet and worked herself into exhaustion.

hat’s the difference between the Truth and a belief? You might say a truth is real, independent of belief, and a belief may or may not be true.

What if I told you the body can’t tell the difference? Welcome to the placebo response.

CONSCIOUS BELIEFS The placebo response (not called the placebo effect anymore) tells us that what we consciously believe directly influences our body response. We can take an inert pill, thinking it’s medicine, and get medicinal benefits. We can have our forearm rubbed with real poison ivy, told it’s not poison ivy, and get no allergic response; conversely, we can have our forearm rubbed with fake poison ivy, told it’s real, and have hives.

Then there’s the story of the students who agreed to be part of a six-month study, injected sub-dermally, with local allergy-producing substance every third Thursday of the month, and checked

UNCONSCIOUS BELIEFS That’s just conscious beliefs. Now let’s talk about subconscious beliefs, which means beliefs we don’t recognize as beliefs; they are so deeply held, we think that ‘s just the way it is. Assumptions are unconscious beliefs. Conclusions about reality, or more importantly, about ourselves, unwittingly carried forward from childhood into the present, are unconscious beliefs. What if I told you that how you see your world, how you relate to others, your very sense of identity, your sense of “self,” are all built on and built out of subconscious beliefs that dictate who you think you are, and even more insidiously, who you in fact have become. You are the swan who thinks she’s an ugly duck. Or you are a duck acting like a swan. (Both are seriously off.) It is very possible that you yourself are a lie.

GROWING BEYOND BELIEFS Philosopher Alan Watts wrote a book in the ‘60’s: The Book On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, in which he says that society collectively and purposefully inhibits self-awareness in its individuals because selfknowledge empowers the individual to go against the herd. Human societies, for the sake of their own coherence, discourage the individuation process. this, of course, leads to ongoing confusion, overwhelm, deception, isolation, resentment, and rejection.

THE ANTIDOTE The antidote to delusional beliefs (lies) is self-knowledge, something spoken and written about since the beginning of humanity. All the great sages deliver the same message: “know thyself,” “the kingdom of heaven is within,” “as above, so below.” Self-knowledge, as our destiny, belongs to us, and it is up to us to find it, reclaim it, and unlock it, whether our culture supports us or not. Like teenagers rejecting the status quo of old-school parents, it is up to us to discover our deepest humanity, forge our identities, our lifestyles, and come into our own personal sense of responsibility. At this juncture of our evolution, we not only get to become aware of what beliefs we’ve been unknowingly carrying, we get to pick and choose which ones to keep. We get to reject what no longer fits and create a world that does.

LIVING IN A WORLD BEYOND BELIEFS What would a culture that supports the individual inner life look like? Naked and messy, like Woodstock? Unruly and wild like Lord of the Flies? Or orderly and creative like the world of Star Trek? I think it’s probably a bit of each, especially at first, as we transition from repressive to supportive.

Transitions can be messy and awkward.

Where we end up is up to us. We are the artists facing a blank canvas, driven by the creative yearnings within, and we simply get to make it up! The good news is, we have a lot of white paint, so that if what we start out with does not work, or just isn’t right, we get to paint over it, and start with a new “blank” canvas.

GETTING IT RIGHT IN A WORLD THAT’S GONE WRONG No matter if it’s a Rolls Royce or a Toyota its yours. When the transmission fails, I will pay for that. Then when the head gaskets blow, I will pay again. How far does this have to go before I just say, “this car is a lemon,” and give up on it? The more I invest, the less likely I will be to declare it a lemon, because that makes my prior investments seem wasted. That’s the same seductive black hole of gambling addiction: “I can’t stop now; look how much I’ve already put in!.” It takes guts to admit that a path I have taken for years is wrong. It takes guts to start over.

The world’s monetary system is one of those wrong paths. With built-in debt at its core, regular collapse is par for the course. With an unsustainable vision of unchecked growth, wealth disparity is inevitable, as is the abuse of natural resources. It will take guts and a collective will to make fundamental changes in how we live on the planet and relate to each other and to our stuff.

It also takes guts to make fundamental changes at a smaller level, and I say, let us do both: make the changes necessary for thriving personally and collectively. I will not wait for “society” to transform, or drop its lies, before I live the life I choose to live. And the collective cannot really wait for all the individuals to be on the same page before it moves forward for the

HAPPY BEYOND BELIEF When beliefs are tools, we use to further our true quest, then all is fine. When we are had by our beliefs, captive in the stagnant web of yesterday’s understanding, beliefs show up as the illusory Maya, the out- and-out lies that retard our natural development. That keeps us bound by the net of our own concepts.

Deeper than beliefs sit a peace, that exists independently. Without it, none of our human endeavors can end well because no external achievement substitutes for the real, inside reality: the original untainted Self, the Life-itself-Self that sees through our eyes and feels with our heart. Nothing hits the spot but the spot itself. We rest only when we know, feel, and are one with the inner reality that transcends beliefs, labels, names, even personalities. At our very core sits the one true source, the quest for which drives all other quests. Surfers seek that perfect moment with the perfect wave; archers seek that perfect moment of union with bow, arrow, and target; lovers seek that perfect moment of loving connectedness and acceptance. It’s all the same, that single song (uni=one, versa=song), that single dance beyond all trance.

When we individually and then collectively wake up to the Unity, everything makes sense, and all is good. To get right in a world that’s gone wrong is very possible. Peace on earth truly is an inside job. Let it begin with me! That’s my belief!

WHEN YOU ARE LOST JUST KEEP WALKING

t the Hippocrates Life Transformation Program, we often see guests feeling overwhelmed or confused in the first week. There could be different reasons for this; some may be affected by the detox caused by the lifestyle change and the diet, some may be affected by the lack of familiarity with the program and the facility, and some may even be affected by being homesick. The staff at Hippocrates Wellness pay attention to this phenomenon, especially, at the time of orientation, and help new guests to be prepared for this likely feeling. However, we often hear guests complaining about this unpleasant experience of detox.

FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE For people who feel lost it is important get support; however, it is also important that they continue their walk. Whatever hope that brought you into the program, continue to hold on to it. In his book, The Comfort Book, Matt Haig gives suggestions to people who feel that they are lost in their journey.

The first suggestion from him is, “when you are lost, just keep walking .” Many of our guests do this often, with the help of guests who walked through this path already.

A second suggestion is, “Don’t believe everything your depressed brain tells you.”

I would add to this, “Don’t believe everything which your health care provider told you unless it is positive .”

YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE THE PERFECT OUTCOME One of the reasons why people feel overwhelmed is that they feel they need to attend every activity and every class offered in the Program. ENJOY BEING DIFFERENT, CULTIVATE CURIOSITY When people radically change their lifestyle, whether in terms of diet or attitude towards one’s health challenges, many get confused as to if they are venturing into something that they can achieve. Even if you feel that your family or friends don’t support what you do, you may choose to be different from them. If you focus on the novelty of what you do and enjoy being different, you will succeed!

JUDGE NOT; YOUR LIFE IS WORTH IT! One of the reasons people fail in their endeavors is that they doubt if their life is worth all the troubles they are undertaking.

If we stop judging ourselves as success or failure, every experience become a bonus, life becomes a gift, not a task. Gratitude can overtake judgment. Practicing mindfulness can also help avoid judgment and help focus on gratitude.

MINDFULNESS IS NOT A LIFESTYLE HACK, IT IS A TOOL We are looking at mindfulness as a technique useful for our guests. As Daniel J. Siegel, a psychiatrist, points out in his book, Aware, mindfulness is far more than the latest lifestyle hack – it benefits your mental and physical health. The beauty about mindfulness is that it is accessible to everyone, anywhere, and it is relatively easy to practice! Stress is how our mind and body respond to any demand. It is described as a feeling of being overwhelmed or, as the inability to cope with one’s mental or emotional pressure. Detox stress also demands some attention. Stress Management, then, involves feeling in control of any given challenging situation using any of the numerous techniques and psychotherapies.

DETOX ITSELF IS A GOAL As Thich Nhat Hanh, the mindfulness guru, teaches us, mindfulness helps you live each moment of your life by focusing your mind on the task at hand. In The Miracle of Mindfulness, he gives the example of doing dishes; according to him doing dishes for the sake of cleaning them is not enough – you need to enjoy doing the dishes. The detox can be experienced for detox’ sake.

MINDFULNESS HELPS US NOT TO FOCUS ON THE PAST, OR MENTALLY RACING AHEAD TO THE FUTURE People who feel that the medical system has failed them in the past have a hard time with detox experience. They tend to think that the detox challenges are giving the message, “here I fail again .” However, practicing mindfulness can help them to focus on the task at hand and forget about the past.

A Profound Discovery T

My Mom, Priscilla Twing, was diagnosed with stage 3C Ovarian Cancer in February of 2016. By the time it was found the cancer was inoperable and metastasized. We were scared to say the least. Recipes

THANKSGIVING GREEN BEEN CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS 1 lb bag of green beans, rinsed Mushroom sauce MUSHROOM SAUCE FOR THE CASSEROLE 1.5 oz. dried mushrooms, (a mix of the fallowing works well: shiitake, porcini, chanterelles)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Blend everything (except the sliced cremini mushrooms) in a high speed blender.

2. Fold the 2 cups cremini into the sauce.

½ cup sesame oil

3. In a large bowl, toss the green beans with the mushroom sauce until all beans are well covered.

1 Tbsp. Braggs liquid amino

4. Pour the mixture in a casserole dish

½ tsp garlic powder

5. Dehydrate 3-4 hrs with temperature set to 110 degrees F (43 degrees C), stir occasionally.

½ tsp onion powder

6. Sprinkle the dish with crispy shallots before serving.

2 cups water

2 cups cremini, sliced

CRISPY SHALLOTS (CAN BE DONE A DAY AHEAD) Thinly slice shallots, toss them with Braggs or Nama Shoyu and a bit of ground flax seed.

Dehydrate overnight or until crispy.

APPLE COBBLER

COBBLER FILLING 9 Fuji apples, cored and peeled juice from 2-3 lemons

COBBLER TOPPING 2-3 cups dehydrated walnuts

½ cup Medjool dates

½ cup medjool dates, pitted

¼ tsp vanilla flavor, no alcohol

½ tsp apple pie spice

½ tsp apple pie spice

a splash of vanilla flavor, no alcohol

½ tsp psyllium powder

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Pulse the nuts and the apple pie spice in a food processor with an S-blade, to make crumble. Set aside 2. In the same machine, process the dates with a splash of vanilla, until it resembles paste. Put it in a bowl.

3. Fold the nut crumble into the date paste until it sticks together.

Note: This makes also a good snack!

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Dice the apples and soak them overnight in lemon water (water mixed with lemon juice) to prevent apples from browning. Strain the apples.

2. Put half of the apples into a blender together with dates, apple pie spice, vanilla and psyllium powder. Blend until smooth.

3. Mix the sauce with the diced apples.

Place the mixture on the bottom of your favorite dish.

4. Spread the nut crumble on top.

DEHYDRATED NUTS & SEEDS • Soaking nuts and seeds germinates them, which increases their nutritional value and activates their life force.

• Rinsing removes the enzyme inhibitors, making them easier to digest.

• Dehydrating nuts and seeds adds a wonderful crunch and increases their shelf life.

• They taste better (and are better for you) than roasted version and also add wonderful texture to many recipes.

• Generally, we soak nuts and seed overnight, rinse them well, spread them evenly on dehydrator trays and dehydrate them with temperature of 110 degrees F (43 degrees C) until crunchy. Walnuts, almonds and pecans take longer to dehydrate than it takes to dehydrate sunflower seeds, for example.

• It is recommended to store dehydrated nuts and seeds in airtight containers, in room temperature.

NOTE We do not use peanuts and cashews at Hippocrates because of toxins they are associated with.

DEHYDRATED PECANS INGREDIENTS 2 cups of soaked and rinsed pecans (Soak for 8 hrs or overnight) Use savory or sweet spices of your choice or follow our suggestion: Mainly have fun with it!

INSTRUCTIONS • Mix the pecans with 1 tsp of cinnamon and 5-8 drops of Stevia or • Mix the rinsed pecans with generous amount of BBQ sauce

DEHYDRATED SWEET POTATO CHIPS INGREDIENTS 2 sweet potatoes, thinly sliced on a mandolin Feel free to use your own favorite savory or sweet spice mix to create the chips. As an inspiration, we suggest using Green salt or BBQ sauce INSTRUCTIONS 1. When using the Green salt, sprinkle it on top of the slices 2. When choosing the BBQ sauce, lightly rub both sides of each slice with the sauce

BBQ SAUCE INGREDIENTS 2 oz lemon juice 1-2 cloves garlic ¼ white onion or less to taste ½ Tbsp onion powder ½ Tbsp garlic powder 2 Tbsp smoked paprika 1 red bell pepper 1 Tbsp coconut aminos Sesame oil to cover the veggies in the blender INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place all ingredients in a high speed blender and blend till smooth.

3. Dehydrate for 24-48 hrs or until crispy with temperature set on 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). Store in an airtight container. If the chips loose their crisp, you can place them to a dehydrator for short period of time, again.
