What's Happening this Spring?

Welcome everyone to the Spring Newsletter edition I am known to the family of Hillview Care as Educator and Acting Care Manager. Spring is a time of new beginnings and at the beginning of September, I was appointed Care Manager for Ashmore and Merrimac If I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me

What defines the season of Spring? The season that begins 1 September and finishes 30 November in the southern hemisphere; a time of rejuvenation and growth, of birds chirping and magpies getting ready to swoop on the oblivious passers by.

With the climate becoming warmer and slowly increasing daylight, this season we will feel the effects of another La Niña with the likelihood of above average rain During the warmer weather, residents should ensure they wear hats when going on outings with families, on bus trips to some exciting Gold Coast destinations, or walking with the exercise group, perhaps along the beach esplanades These trips are wonderful ways of getting to know other residents who also live at HillView Care.

A selection of specialised Spring events have been arranged, to take place over the next few months including a Twilight Concert, an Elvis Concert, and a Spring Garden Party

I hope Spring 2022 brings you happiness and beauty

Jenni

Happy Spring! Well, a relatively dry winter has definitely helped to dry out the lawns somewhat, and enable me to trim, prune and mulch in preparation for the months ahead On writing this, the weather bureau has recently announced the return of La Niña for a third season, meaning significant rains So expect the gardens to be lush for the next few months!

I encourage all residents to venture out into the gardens as much as possible this Spring, if not to enjoy the tranquility then to take in the new blossoms, and the twitter pated birds! We've incorporated a 'Name that Plant' challenge for you over the page, to test your garden knowledge.

Flowers to look out for:

Pandorea Bower vine

A beautiful, subtropical, twining plant that produces fragrant pink and white flowers throughout most of the year

Indian Hawthorn

A stunning rounded shrub producing leathery, shiny, dark green leaves and prolific clusters of sweetly scented, white flowers in spring and summer. This is followed by small, metallic, nontoxic blue berries It attracts bees to the garden

If you need assistance getting into or around the gardens, ask for help! The Lifestyle team plan regular garden walks in the grounds, and the Exercise & Physio Therapists can assist with fitting it into your daily routine.

Until next time

RESIDENT FEATURE: VIRGINIA NEPTUNE HUBER

Originally from Melbourne, went to London for 2 years after school before returning to work for a Mission, which introduced me to counselling with the Social Welfare Department Dealing with many cases, after a few years it evolved to specialising in gangs via the gang leaders getting them before they were placed in the system That time had a big impact on me I grew up with them their drugs, guns and stabbings, and almost felt protected However, couldn’t do it these days, the drugs are too complex and there really was honour amongst thieves back then

It was during this period that I started an animal casting agency (specifically panthers, lions, tigers, cats etc), for TV commercials, catalogues and the likes They were all from private zoos, and loved it! It took me a year to source the animals, all whilst meeting some amazing individuals With my husband also in the business, we were able to work together wonderfully I was overseeing the casting and locations, and ended up freelancing for other Directors, and produced as well

My parents moved to the Gold Coast, therefore was 'toing and froing' from Melbourne with the odd trip to Europe (my sister lived there), also to the Venice Film Festival with friends who live there When my husband died, I relocated to the Gold Coast

I was asked to produce a children's TV programme which took me to Los Angeles for a time, keeping me busy before entering the next phase 'aged homeless' in Brisbane Connie was an elderly homeless person who slept in a park, and appeared to be 'The Matriarch'. One night I saw her being accosted by three thugs, intervened, asked Connie to lunch the next day and she turned up starting a wonderful relationship. This thug incident lead me to realise that the young ones have a choice the aged didn't. All I needed was a sausage sizzle, cakes, kerosene (for hair lice) and I was welcomed amongst them. Quite relaxing by comparison!

Next, I was invited to work at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Research Department as their Marketing Executive, bringing attention to the 32 medical programmes that the Doctors were researching relentlessly Cervical cancer became one of the successful programmes, as well as liver transplants and many more At one stage I had five countries working together on a huge marketing strategy for spinal awareness, which included celebrated advocates Christopher Reeve, Richard Branson and more when 'BANG', I was involved in a major car accident!

Am now (still) succumbing to the ramifications of a bruised brain and other things you get from such accidents I hence came across Reiki and Neurolink (a brain modality), and subsequently got my Masters in both The brain, as they say, is the last vestige of knowledge and have spent time embracing that knowledge Meditation every afternoon has helped enormously, and it's not unusual to find me, from head to toe, covered in crystals a passion I've had for years! However, here I am at HillView Care with said meditation and stillness, and loving it!! Did you know that HillView House is Feng Shui'd plent f h d h i in the place where you live

Happy Stillness and Big Hugs,

Virginia

physiotherapy

You’ve heard it time and again: physical activity and exercise are good for you, and you should aim to make it part of your daily routine. There are countless studies that prove the important health benefits associated with exercise, and it becomes more important as we age Below are a series of simple exercises you can try safely from the comfort of your own room

ACTIVE ASSISTED SHOULDER FLEXION

This exercise can be done either lying down or sitting down. This movement is beneficial for those people who may have difficulty achieving shoulder range of motion on one side compared to the other due to injury, arthritis, post surgery. Performing an actively assisted movement may help improve range of motion and assist in regaining strength in the affected limb

By holding onto a walking stick or clasping your hands together, raise your arms up towards your head to a comfortable position

Ensure you keep your elbows as straight as possible
