SURFACE WORLD 2023

10 great reasons to exhibit at Surface World 2023 If your business is attracting new customers from advertising and word of mouth, it can be very tempting to write trade shows off as something that you don’t need to do to attract new customers. But trade shows can be one of the most rewarding forms of marketing when approached with the right strategy. Trade show veterans will attest to the fact that the ROI (return on investment) achieved from a successful trade show is often impossible to match in comparison to other forms of marketing. So before you write off trade shows as secondary to your current marketing tactics, it pays to learn about their benefits. Here are ten reasons which explain why trade shows should be at the top of your list.

1. Meet and connect with prospective customers One of the greatest advantages of exhibiting at a trade show is that it allows you to meet and connect with prospective customers in person instead of communicating with them over the phone. Research has shown that in-person meetings are 34 times more successful than those made via email or by phone. When meeting in person, you become someone that they know, recognise, and want to connect with. Another advantage is the trade show host uses their database to invite prospective customers to the event, using various marketing tools on your behalf to get footfall through the door. Where else can you meet

2

hundreds of prospective business opportunities all under one roof?

2. Strengthen your bond with existing customers Just like trade shows give you the opportunity to better connect with prospective customers, exhibiting at a trade show also allows you to meet your existing customers face-to-face. While most of today’s business is conducted over email or phone, face-to-face meetings are undeniably a fantastic way to do business. Trade shows are often a place for customers to approach you with their long term plans and big orders – orders that can be incredibly lucrative for you as an exhibitor. Utilising your attendance to plan meetings at the show will save you valuable time and money, rather than trying to see each in turn at their place of business.

3. Learn about new developments in your industry When your business attends an industry event, it puts you at the centre of the action. Trade shows are a place for businesses to announce and display their latest innovations and developments. In a competitive industry, would you rather be aware of your competitors or out of the loop? Exhibiting at a trade show doesn’t just give you the opportunity to make new sales and connect with existing customers, it gives you the chance to

look at cutting edge developments in your industry and the opportunities they also create for you. When you are at the show take a few hours out of your stand and see what other exhibitors are doing, this helps to keep you up to date with new technologies, techniques, products and industry trends.

4. Meet new companies that can help your business Your attendance gives you the chance to network with both prospective customers and prospective vendors. This makes a trade show more than just an opportunity to expand your distribution, but a chance to expand your supply chain. While your sales and marketing team focus on connecting with prospects to make new sales, your Purchasing Manager can connect with new vendors and contractors that can help your business grow. This makes a trade show a two-sided opportunity for your business – to expand sales, and to expand supply chains.

5. Close deals with new customers during the show There are few situations more tense than the average outbound sales call. From the

SURFACE WORLD 2023

endless objections of the prospective customer, to the stress of losing a valuable sale, it’s natural to face rejection and nervousness as a salesperson. At a trade show, however, the atmosphere is different. Almost half of trade show attendees make purchases at trade shows. A staggering 91 percent of all trade show attendees claim that shows are ‘extremely useful’ to their product and service sourcing efforts. When you speak to a Purchasing Manager or Director on the phone, you’re often dealing with someone that’s already juggling a variety of obligations and deals in their mind. As such, they’re understandably disinterested. At a trade show, you’re dealing with prospective customers that have made the journey to fulfil a requirement they currently have.

pace? While your sales team uses the trade show as an opportunity to meet existing customers and connect with prospective ones, spend a moment looking at the other exhibitors to see what they’re doing differently from you. Great businesses are aware of their competitors, and trade shows are one of the best opportunities to connect with competitors and understand their sales strategy, their pricing, and the reasons for their success.

8. Rapidly expand your database of sales leads

Unlike traditional outbound marketing, in which rejection is the norm, trade shows are one of the few environments in which your sales team benefits from an audience of prospective customers that are genuinely interested in buying your products and services.

While skimming through the phone book might give you thousands of unqualified phone numbers, nothing gives you qualified leads quite like a trade show. While cold calling and online marketing might not have the same initial expense as a trade show, there’s no greater way to fill your contact book with prospects than a successful trade show effort in a much shorter time frame.

6. Strengthen or establish your brand

9. Speak directly to your target market

Trade shows are one of the few environments where you have the same amount of access to prospective customers as your larger competitors do. This makes them a valuable opportunity not just for direct sales and marketing, but for strengthening your brand and positioning your business as a leader in its industry.

Email surveys are a fantastic way to learn more about what your customers want and don’t want. Unfortunately, their low response rate makes them useful only to businesses with a large enough email list to tolerate very few responses.

From free giveaways to trade show displays, there’s no better opportunity to give your brand a sizeable boost than a trade show. If you create an exhibition stand that attracts the right type of attention, a single exhibition can be all it takes to change your brand from up-andcomer to an established industry leader.

Trade shows allow you to solicit a huge amount of feedback by talking directly to visitors that have been invited to attend from various avenues within your industry. You can then use this valuable information after the show to help your business expand and improve.

A great way to get useful feedback and valuable sales leads at the same time is by conducting a short survey on your exhibition stand, and rewarding participants with vouchers or gifts from your business. Where else but a trade show can you generate new leads and valuable feedback at the same time?

10. Optimise your sales and lead generation strategy Trade shows are an excellent opportunity to expose your sales team to hundreds of different prospects in a short period of time. A perfect opportunity to test new sales tricks and marketing strategies in a very responsive environment. If you want to test and optimise your lead generation strategy, you’ll find no better place than a trade show. Try several different sales pitches on prospects and you’ll quickly learn which ones work and which ones don’t, allowing you to perfect your sales strategies in just a few days. You can then use these honed skills when out on the road or at future trade events. The next Surface World is to take place on 4th and 5th October 2023 at the NEC in Birmingham. Reservations are already being taken. If you are interested in exhibiting at the show or would like to advertise in the Surface World magazine or on the website, please call Nigel Bean on +44 (0) 1442 826826 to discuss your requirements. Or you can send an email to nigelbean1@aol.com.

Surface World – Re-Connecting The Industry

7. Learn what your competitors are doing right In the world of business, it pays to keep your customers close and your competitors closer. Exhibiting at a trade show allows you to observe what your competitors are doing right and apply their tactics to your own business. Is there a particular competitor in your industry that seems to be growing at a rapid

Q&A WITH QUALICOAT UK & IRELAND

Q&A with Angus Mackie, chair of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Surface World chats with Angus Mackie, chair of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland ahead of the organisation’s conference for 2022 – Future-proofing Facades.

For QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, undertaking virtual meetings, advising members, maintaining virtual training courses and retaining the integrity of the system with the twice yearly independent external audit of members by the IFO (Institut für Oberflächentechnik) in Germany, meant acquiring a few new skills, fast! So, Covid-19 aside, what are your main responsibilities as chairman? The appointment is normally for a 2-year period and the responsibilities are to chair quarterly council meetings, work in conjunction with the secretariat to set and approve budgets, liaise with various industry bodies covering construction and extrusion, deal with any non-compliance issues following the twice yearly independent external audit of members, and otherwise advance the interests of the organisation.

Welcome, Angus. You’ve been chairman of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland for two years’ now. What’s presented the greatest challenge in that time? Having become chair on 1st January 2020, the biggest single challenge was steering the organisation through the pandemic. I chaired my first meeting on 5th February 2020 then the world went into a spin, with all of us facing many challenges in our own businesses.

That’s quite extensive, especially when we remind readers that you hold this role alongside that of chairman of Allumette group, including powder coater, Vertik-Al. As you’re already over two years into your tenure, where do you want to lead the organisation and what does QUALICOAT UK & Ireland want to achieve in the next five years? Since 2018 our membership has risen by almost 20 percent, and I am proud to say that we have six more prospects in the pipeline. Our aim is to build on this strong foundation and maximise our penetration of the UK architectural aluminium market in respect of both coaters and the related supply chain and expand the geographical reach amongst specifiers. And that’s exactly what you’re planning with the conference, right? To raise awareness of the quality label amongst architects and specifiers. Yes. Our previous conference focussed

4

MAY 2022

on sustainability. Things have moved on since then, not least with the introduction of QUALICOAT 3.0. While sustainability is still an integral part of the specification process, it is just one factor among many which need to be considered. This year, the conference will be a day giving us the time and opportunity to explore more topics and introduce panel discussions. We hope to use interactive Q&A software so that the audience can contribute to these. What can attendees expect to hear? Our aim is to educate and inform on the features and benefits of specifying QUALICOAT standard coatings. We have selected speakers from across the industry to present their field of expertise. Naveen Sandhu, UK & Ireland specification manager for AkzoNobel powder coating will examine fire resistance and safety in facades, paying particular attention to the fire performance of powder coating, for example. Naveen will be joined by other QUALICOAT members and committee representatives. I will introduce proceedings, followed by a global perspective from QUALICOAT president, Ivo Vermeeren, and then it’s over to the experts! We’ll also be including sections on pre-treatment, site inspections and cleaning of powder coated facades. It promises to be a worthwhile and informative day. Oh, and we mustn’t forget our keynote speaker, Maxwell Hutchinson. Formerly president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and more recently, a TV presenter and respected broadcaster. We’re anticipating plenty of wit and wisdom! How do people get involved? Firstly, it’s free to attend but you must register for a ticket. You can do this via the conference website or search QUALICOAT on eventbrite.co.uk. Put it in your diary – 14th June at the Building Centre, London. And, finally, follow QUALICOAT UK & Ireland on LinkedIn for the latest updates… there’ll be more announcements as the event draws closer. Register via www.qualicoatukiconference.co.uk This event is sponsored by Barley Chalu, Chemetall, Interpon, Jotun, and Vertik-Al.

QUALICOAT UK & IRELAND

QUALICOAT 3.0 Enhanced Sustainability By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Chair Since 1986 QUALICOAT has continued to work as a membership run organisation to standardise and improve the quality of powder coatings by setting a standard that is regularly updated following evidence-backed research. Today QUALICOAT, based in Zurich, can claim a global licensed membership of powder manufacturers, pretreatment systems providers and powder coaters who are all third party inspected to the current QUALICOAT Specification. In the UK & Ireland QUALICOAT has its own Association that inspects and awards licences across the region. Membership in the UK & Ireland continues to grow and now encompasses virtually all of the major architectural powder coaters across the British Isles. Over the years the QUALICOAT Standard has been improved and updated to ensure that current powder coating best practice is undertaken by all licence and approval holders. Part of a licence holders responsibility is the provision of regular coated samples for extended ‘acetic salt spray’ and in some cases ‘filiform corrosion’ testing at the appointed test house, in the case of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, this is at IFO Netherlands BV. In a very small number of these test samples it was noticed that premature failure could occur following these very corrosive and accelerated tests. With the cause of the issue unknown, QUALICOAT set up a working group of Members to try to identify what was causing the issue and how this could be eliminated to further enhance powder coating durability. It became obvious during research that the aluminium alloy itself was the contributing factor, so the working group began to develop a specification for the alloys used

8

MAY 2022

in fenestration, namely alloy 6060 and 6063. The resulting alloy specification, which forms Appendix A13 of the QUALICOAT Specifications 2022, requires the alloys to fall within the EN573-3:2019 Standard, which can be met using primary or secondary (recycled) aluminium and requires the following three tests to be carried out: 1. Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) 2. Anodic Cyclic Polarisation (ACP) 3. Metallographic Study for Aluminium All requirements of these tests need to be undertaken and passed by an independent test house before an approval is awarded. By ensuring that the alloy is of the correct standard, with reduced inclusions and improved grain consistency, it has been demonstrated by QUALICOAT that architectural powder coat finishes can be further enhanced for sustainability, especially when used with Class 2 powders (super-durable) and Class 3 powders (hyper-durable). Appendix A13 of the QUALICOAT Specifications is aimed at specifiers who have large facade projects and wish to take advantage of the additional protection that comes from a ‘QUALICOAT 3.0’ Specification. Whilst the current QUALICOAT supply chain includes powder manufacturers, pretreatment systems providers and architectural powder coaters, QUALICOAT 3.0 introduces for the first time the aluminium extruders into the QUALICOAT powder coating supply chain. Specifiers who wish to take advantage of QUALICOAT 3.0 should in the first instance contact QUALICOAT UK & Ireland for guidance on specification and help in choosing the correct supply chain. The global QUALICOAT Standard is incrementally revised in real time with regular update sheets and is revised to include all updates each year end. The Specification, its appendices and any update sheets are freely available for download at www.qualicoat.net. For details on the availability of various colours and finishes contact any QUALICOAT UK & Ireland member for more information. For updated information about the use and specification of QUALICOAT in the UK and Ireland, please visit the UK & Ireland Association website at www.qualicoatuki.org.

Have you invested in component cleaning machines? There’s now less than a year to take advantage of Rishi Sunak’s “superdeduction” policy. Graham Fraser, MD of Fraser Technologies, discusses why now is the right time to invest in equipment. Announced in March 2021, the “superdeduction” policy allows companies to claim 130% capital allowances on plant machinery investment. For those who are unfamiliar with the policy, businesses are able to deduct 130% of an initial investment when computing taxable profits between April 2021 and March 2023. This means that, for every pound a company invests under the super-deduction, their taxes are cut by up to 25p. It may not have been front-page news but it can make a huge difference to your business. Previously, special rate (including long life assets) qualified for a 6% special rate writing down allowance. Now with the super-deduction policy, there is a 50% first-year allowance for the same assets. Combined, these new policies are a great reason for your business to make further investments and super charge your planned investment journey. Plus, as energy bills continue to soar, a simple switch can have a significant impact on energy usage, without affecting

Interpon powder coatings help HAGS win on the swings and roundabouts Innovative Interpon Redox powder coatings from AkzoNobel are helping HAGS, one of Europe’s foremost manufacturers of outdoor playground equipment, to protect its products from the impact of costly and unsightly corrosion, especially in difficult coastal environments with a high salt content in the air. HAGS, which recently celebrated a 25-year partnership with Interpon, was one of the pioneers in switching from a solvent-based paint system to an Interpon powder coating that was more sustainable, and that fully supported its sustainability strategies. HAGS first started using Interpon in 1998, looking for a more sustainable solution to protect its products against corrosion and general wear and tear. The switch coincided with a move to a new manufacturing facility in Egham, UK which the Interpon team supported with practical advice, training and support. Since then, AkzoNobel has helped HAGS to seamlessly integrate its powder coating processes into three more sites including Aneby in Sweden (2013) and Sosnowiec in Poland (2019).

friendly solution. And because Interpon is a globally available powder coating system, we have been able to develop a standardise finishing system across all our European factories.” Tomasz Kluczewski, Regional Director North Europe of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business, says he is proud of the 25-year partnership with HAGS: “Since helping HAGS make the switch we have continued to support them through partnership and innovation. These have been the key drivers not only in helping our customer to meet their sustainability goals, but also in establishing an unbeatable platform that brings benefits to both companies and reflects our heritage in building long-term relationships.” Among the first to use Interpon’s Redox Duplex system – a two-layer system with a zinc-rich Interpon Redox PZ epoxy primer and topcoat, HAGS now offers its customers the Redox Triplex three-layer system. This provides enhanced corrosion protection in environments up to the highest corrosivity category of C5.

Most recently, HAGS introduced an optional Interpon AM topcoat, which can reduce microbial growth such as bacteria and mold by up to 99.9%. These powder coatings have been especially popular for those procuring its outdoor fitness products used in public places, since they tend to attract a high number of users from all age groups. Andy Yates, Technical Director at HAGS, says that as a major supplier to local authorities and councils, quality and reputation are key: “What is vital to our customers is that the products have a long life-span and reflect well on the people who procured them. What is crucial to us, therefore, is working with a partner like Interpon whose products protect and enhance our equipment and ensure they keep performing in a variety of different global climates and environmental conditions.”

Visit for more information: https://industrial.interpon.com/en/redox/

Mark Grace, Marketing Director of HAGS, says that he particularly values the expertise of the Interpon team through its process audits for its ‘Approved Applicator’ registration: “It gives our customers peace of mind that our installed products will last for many years with minimal maintenance required to the power coated finish, as well as being based on a sound environmentally

A Layman’s Guide to Ultrasonic Inspection Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a large and increasingly multifaceted discipline, encompassing a wide range of techniques such as magnetic particle inspection, radiography, ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing and more. As of the end of 2020, Ultrasonic Testing (UT) was the most commonly used method, accounting for 27%1 of the total NDT equipment market share. In this article you’ll find a brief overview of the history, fundamentals, and current capabilities of UT as a technique. A Short History of Ultrasonic Testing Ultrasonic testing’s roots can be traced back to the classic ‘tap test’ of historical blacksmiths and metalworkers. In these tap tests, an experienced craftsman would give test pieces a firm whack with a hard object, such as a hammer or coin, and then listen for the resulting ring to tell whether or not the object

was ‘sound’ from the sharpness, tone and other sonic qualities of the produced noise. While this is a long way practically from the scientific approach of modern UT, the concept of utilising sound to test materials was the driving constant throughout its subsequent development. The development of modern ultrasonics really got underway in the 1940s and 50s, with a marked acceleration in sophistication following the electronic revolution at the tail end of WW2. In 1945 Floyd Firestone, an American physicist specialising in acoustics, patented a device built from modified RADAR instruments called ‘The Supersonic Reflectoscope’2 which he described as ‘a means of inspecting the interior of solid parts for flaws’. The Reflectoscope operated in a ‘pulse-echo’ configuration using a single quartz crystal search unit which both sent and received, which was notable in comparison to his contemporaries who made use of separate sending and receiving units. The search unit emitted a 2.25MHz ultrasonic pulse into materials and then plotted the amplitude of returning echoes against time on an oscilloscope screen, making the Reflectoscope arguably the world’s first A-Scan flaw detector. Firestone’s invention was a breakthrough moment for the field of ultrasonic testing, but it would take a number of years and a lot of innovative industrial design before UT developed into the mature and reliable inspection technique it’s considered to be today. For this to happen, certain technologies needed to be pioneered first, such as the discovery of high-power composite crystals to replace quartz or digital electronics to replace the analogue valve based oscilloscope systems used in the 40s.

What is Ultrasound? Fundamentally, sound is just the name for a type of mechanical wave that travels through solids, liquids and gases by making their particles oscillate, or vibrate, between 20 and 20,000 times a second (Hz). Because this frequency region is what the human ear evolved to detect, it is also known as audible sound. Ultrasound, therefore, refers to the region of frequencies that are too high, i.e. that vibrate too fast, to be detected by the human ear. Conversely, Infrasound is the range of frequencies that are too low to be detected by the human ear. The waves used for non-destructive testing are extremely high pitched when compared to the audible range. The lowest commonly used frequency is around 1 MHz (1 million Hz), which is fifty times higher than the highest sound you’ll ever hear. For specialist applications like scanning acoustic microscopy the frequencies employed can go all the way up to a staggering 2,000 MHz3! The important trade-off engineers consider when it comes to their choice of ultrasonic frequency is penetration vs. resolution; as ultrasonic waves increase in frequency they can be used to make out much smaller features within a material, but will lose much of their ability to penetrate deep into them. Conversely, lower frequency ultrasound will have a much easier time penetrating material, but have much lower resolving power. The most commonly used frequencies within industrial testing sit within the 0.5MHz to 20MHz range. The bottom end of the range is employed when testing composites and highly attenuative polymers while the top end is more useful for very thin metals and high-precision applications like bolt tension measuring. TESTING & MEASUREMENT

How Does Ultrasonic Testing Work? On a conceptual level, ultrasonic testing is a fairly intuitive technique to understand and requires little abstraction or higher level understanding. An ultrasonic pulse is generated by a transducer which is acoustically coupled to the test piece. This ultrasonic pulse travels into the material, reflecting back to the transducer whenever it hits a boundary, such as an air bubble, crack or the back surface of the piece. The strength of these reflections and how long it took for them to come back are measured and then plotted on a 2D display. The explanation and diagram above are descriptive of a specific type of ultrasonic inspection, in NDT jargon this is known as a ‘0° Single-Crystal A-Scan inspection’. ‘0°’ refers to the angle that the transducer is offset from the surface, ‘single-crystal’ refers to the specific construction of the transducer and ‘A-Scan’ refers to the way the results are displayed and interpreted. This type of inspection is the classic interpretation of UT and more or less the same setup pioneered by Firestone. However, as the field has developed, so too have the methods employed by inspectors. As more powerful piezoelectric composites, the crystals that produce the ultrasound, began to see use, it became feasible to transmit the ultrasound into materials at an angle, allowing for the fusion face of welds to be inspected without radiography. Advances in transducer design and computing power saw the production of transducers with more than one piezoelectric crystal inside, leading to the development of dual crystal transducers for near surface inspection and eventually to the introduction of phased array ultrasonics in the 1980s,

A-Scan displays are interpreted based on an understanding of the part’s geometry.

where 12 or more individually fired crystals could be connected to one another. Increases in computing power also lead to different ways of displaying UT information, such as C-Scans and S-Scans, providing inspectors with much more easily interpretable results.

Where is Ultrasonic Testing Used? UT makes up over a quarter of the total NDT market, and has achieved supremacy mainly as a result of its versatility as a technique with new developments continuously adding capabilities to a UT inspector’s arsenal. While earlier designs were limited to volumetric inspections of metals below a certain thickness, the current suite of options available to ultrasonic inspectors are very comprehensive. They include detection of surface flaws, measurement of coating thickness on non-metallic substrates, automatic full-body immersion scans of complex parts and some guided wave technologies even allow for long-range

Weld testing makes up a large proportion of the global ultrasonic testing market (Picture credit: loda.gov.ua, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons)

ultrasonic inspection of pipelines up to 90m4 away from the transducer. As a result of this versatility, and in combination with its high accuracy, UT is employed in some form in an overwhelming majority of high-tech industries. The top users by size are the oil & gas sector, aerospace industry and the utility & power sector. Within these sectors the most common use cases are often weld testing: the thorough scanning of welds to check for manufacturing defects, and corrosion monitoring: the periodic inspection of pipes & plates to check their rate of corrosive decay over time.

What Does the Future of Ultrasonic Testing Look Like? One of the downsides of current UT methods is that even a basic A-Scan operator must be rigorously trained to be able to properly perform an inspection; in 2018 a Level 1 NDT technician in the US earned a median salary of $73,000 – about 40% higher than the median US salary across all occupations5. This is exacerbated by a general skills shortage within NDT as a whole that sees demand for operators outpacing supply. There are two trends developing as businesses attempt to reconcile the expense of NDT with its absolute indispensability; increasing demand for low-cost, low-training UT solutions and a greater focus on automated UT systems. The former will most likely be achieved as manufacturers find ways to bring together the stunning images of advanced UT with the ease-of-use seen from traditional techniques like thickness measurement. The latter is already subject to frenzied development, and the last few years have seen autonomous drones and crawlers perform jobs in hours that may have taken multiple operators days to complete. TESTING & MEASUREMENT

Measuring Duplex Coatings in the Automotive Industry For automotive manufacturers, it is of increasing importance to control the quality of the paint processes in order to ensure effective corrosion protection while reducing costs. Especially in EDP (electrophoretic deposition) processes, this requires adherence to tight tolerance limits, which in turn, requires careful monitoring. But the measurement task itself should also be fast and cost-effective; the instrument must be able to measure lacquer atop various base materials (mainly galvanized steel or aluminium) without refitting or recalibration. To measure lacquer coatings on both steel and aluminium with the same instrument and without having to change probes, it is necessary to utilize different methods. Furthermore, when the steel is galvanized, the Zn coating must be measured separately in order to determine the thickness of the lacquer coating above it. Especially for this purpose, FISCHER has developed the PHASCOPE® PMP10 DUPLEX and the ESG20 probe, unifying three measurement methods in one system for testing the thickness of each layer precisely and accurately.

For a typical lacquer/ Zn/Fe combination, the Zn layer is measured through the lacquer using the phase sensitive eddy current method (employing lift-offcompensation). At the same time, the overall coating Typical measurement tasks in the automotive industry. TESTING & MEASUREMENT

Touch the colour with the new color2view The revolution in colour measurement continues BYK-Gardner - worldwide partner of the automotive, paint and plastic industries for quality control of colour, appearance and physical properties - is introducing a new Benchtop spectrophotometer, the color2view, which represents a revolution in colour measurement in every respect. By combining several, different measurement methods, the color2view becomes an objective eye that evaluates our visual colour impression in its entity. The color2view uses a circumferential illumination at 45° with 0° viewing to measure colour as you see it. The circumferential illumination from 10 directions ensures repeatable measurement results on textured surfaces. Simultaneously with colour, 20° and 60° gloss are measured to clearly differentiate medium gloss and high gloss samples. In addition, the color2view has a fluorimeter integrated to predict lightfastness by quantifying fluorescence – the calculated colour change after fluorescence degradation is displayed with easy-to-understand CIELABand DE data. The combination of a spectrophotometer and a fluorimeter opens completely new perspectives for controlling

colour quality and guaranteeing long-term colour stability. The color2view Pro version offers a Jetness Mode which is specially designed to measure deep and deepest black with highest accuracy. It features excellent technical performance which also is assured for the very low reflectance range R < 0.1 %.

- "top or front port" - to one's personal needs or sample size and shape. Operation via the brilliant, colour touchscreen is icon-based and just as intuitive as using a smartphone. An integrated camera permits a live preview of the measurement spot. This prevents false readings on imperfections or scratches and ensures precise positioning of the sample.

Easy to operate, intuitive navigation and new functionalities with the “special touch” create an unprecedented User Experience:

As so often, it's the little things that make life easier, and to be able to offer these, we are always keen to go the extra mile. A lot of thoughtful engineering has gone into the color2view to provide new and useful

functionalities. The result is a storage compartment for standards, which ensures that the standards are always at hand and yet protected, and a smart sample holder. The sample holder can be stored flat in the housing of the instrument when not in use and be parked at several positions on its way to the measurement area where it touches the sample’s surface gently thanks to the soft-close function. The color2view X models can be used with interchangeable apertures to measure small to large samples. Breakthrough technical performance guarantees a seamless global colour management across the complete supply chain: The proven, innovative BYK LED technology guarantees an outstanding performance. Short-term, long-term and temperature stability are unsurpassed in the industry. The extra-large measurement spot with homogenous illumination guarantees highly repeatable and representative readings. All together highest accuracy and interinstrument agreement are ensured and allow you the use of digital standards.

Nevertheless, the implementation of digital standards was up to now limited to one instrument family. For the first time ever in the industry, digital standards can be exchanged between benchtop and portable colour instruments without any extra-profiling. Due to the excellent intra-instrument agreement between color2view and spectro2guide, the seamless use of digital standards has become reality. The new color2view is a revolutionary benchtop spectrophotometer that open completely new horizons in colour control. More information can be found at byk-instruments.com

MASKING – TAPES, CAPS & PLUGS

Hadleigh Enterprises offers specialist masking tape experience and capability With applications ranging from powder coating to corrosion protection, Hadleigh Enterprises Ltd. brings five decades’ of experience. Hadleigh Enterprises Ltd has been trading since1971 as an independent family business, gaining ISO 9001 in 1992. The Essex-based company stocks and supplies an extensive choice of masking products, all sourced from leading manufacturers. The metal processing and surface finishing sector is a key market for its services with a diverse range of needs met by Hadleigh’s ability to match product type, volume and design to exact requirements. “So many individual masking tape applications are unique to specific processes, because of this we have found it is vital to work as closely as possible with each customer to develop highly specific solutions,” says David Ogles, Hadleigh Enterprises’ Managing Director. “By being involved from the outset, and with ongoing production reviews, we can look not only to supply the most appropriate masking system, but can also ensure the customer benefits from continuous innovation – all as part of a structured application process.” This last point, he believes, is often crucial.

36

MAY 2022

For example, the company’s willingness to develop prototype solutions that address key factors, such as masking accuracy and adhesion, is extremely important and can have a fundamental bearing on ongoing production operations. This also helps to ensure that leading edge developments, such as very high bond performance, the ability to fulfil metal-to-metal applications and high temperature capability of up to 380°C, come under the spotlight every time. Hadleigh Enterprises hold the accreditation – EN9100:2016 certification – which is of particular note to those involved in the aerospace sector. “Aerospace has long been one of the markets in which we operate and this accreditation – which is technically equivalent to AS9100D – marks a level of operational capability that will build on the confidence that our customers have in our services,” explains David Ogles. “The standard reflects the importance attributed to supply chain quality, not least in the context of safety of goods throughout their life cycle which is a major factor, of course, in the aerospace sector,” adds David Ogles. “Overall, this is seen as part of the drive towards establishing commonality of aviation, space and defence quality systems

and we are delighted that it underscores our role in these extremely challenging fields.” Hadleigh Enterprises sources master rolls from leading manufacturers before slitting and shaping them, often to produce die-cut shapes from engineering drawings, to meet exact customer requirements. The company undertakes all conversion in-house to optimise control of both quality and delivery, and can achieve slitting tolerances of +/– 0.2 mm. “We are very happy to provide material in quantities of all sizes, even down to a single roll which may be all that is initially required for a prototyping operation,” continues David Ogles. In so many sectors of the metal finishing and surface treatment industry, the benefits of Hadleigh Enterprises’ capability and experience will be widely acknowledged. “As masking quality is often so closely linked to production results, it is vital that the need for optimised masking is not overlooked,” concludes David Ogles. New digital solution from Interpon helps customers bring colours to life AkzoNobel Powder Coatings has innovated a new web application 3D colour visualization tool within its Interpon webshop to help customers better understand how a powder coating’s colour, texture and finish that looks good in theory, will actually appear in reality. The tool gives customers instant access to thousands of colours in the Interpon range. Through the clever use of a 360-degree dynamic camera and simulated lighting, the customer is given a true-to-life image of how the colour performs to a degree of accuracy and realism not possible before in a virtual environment. Rather than the image being ‘flat’, the customer can orientate the ‘virtual’ panel to see how the light reflects and the colour looks from different angles. It gives a true impression of how surfaces coated in special

finishes and metal effects will appear in a way that it unprecedently realistic. They can also see multiple colours, multiple gloss levels and various surface finishes before deciding upon which is best. Customers can experience colour as if they looked at panels in their hands without having to order a sample and waiting for it to arrive. Remco Massen van den Brink, Marketing Director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings, says the new tool is part of the company’s commitment to keeping its customers one step ahead: “Through ceaseless innovation, we are supporting our customers in the way they imagine and use powder coatings, developing practical, easy-to-use digital tools that they can access 24/7.” “Through building meaningful partnerships with our customers and marketing insight studies, we understand the vital importance of choosing the right colours and textures to keep them out in front. That’s why we have so many colours to choose from and have

developed this first-of-its-kind solution to inspire our customers into making the right decisions, any time.” Pim Koeckhoven, Director of Colour Technology at AkzoNobel, says that this is another step on the road to digitizing part of the customer interface: “High quality and accurate digital representations of our products allow our customers to experience colours to a new level. Years of collaboration with academics and technology partners have taken us and our customers to a place we have never been before, and there will be more innovations like this to come.” The 3D visualization tool, which was developed in collaboration with Dutchworkz, can be found on the Interpon webstores in Europe and North America, and can be used on all major platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. In smoothing and polishing parts, the M1 also enables us to create a perfect surface for painting or dye, which is another important element of improving the aesthetics. “Crucially, the M1 is a very versatile machine, allowing us to work with a greater ecosystem of materials to expand our product offering and truly keep our manufacturing in-house.” Colin Spellacy – Head of Sales at Rösler UK Ltd. commented; “We were delighted that heliguy™ chose the AM Solutions M1 machine, which followed a run of successful process trials at our customer experience centre located at Rösler UK Ltd. There are many choices available when deciding upon selecting the right company to collaborate with and based on our 80+ years’ experience in providing surface finishing solutions to many industries, this was a confident investment for Ross Embleton and the team at heliguy™”. AM Solutions is a brand of the Rösler Group. heliguy™ is using its industry experience to drive innovation in and around the drone sector: Manufacturing products to benefit unmanned aircraft operations, as well as utilising aspects

of drone technology in other applications. The company has produced a lightweight, collision-proof cage for the Mavic 2 series of drones, from the world’s leading drone manufacturer, DJI. The protective frame facilitates safer and more efficient aerial inspections - including internal and confinedspace missions - and is being deployed around the world. heliguy™’s design team has also created a bespoke dog camera, engineered for police and security/surveillance personnel. The device features a high-definition camera which is attached to the dog and rapidly transmits footage back to a screen which can be worn and monitored by police and surveillance crews. It is especially suited for house clearances, firearms operations and search and rescue. Ross said: “These are just two examples of products designed by our in-house team and there are some really exciting and innovative projects in the pipeline, as well as others under NDA. “Focusing on distributed manufacturing enables us to work on these creations in a cost-effective and time-efficient way, and gives us more control to perfect our products and quickly test new concepts through an in-house approach of prototyping and development.” Bringing manufacturing in-house is a diversification for heliguy™, based on the outskirts of Newcastle. Formed in 2008 and originally geared towards hobbyist aircraft, the company has expanded to become one of the world’s leading drone specialists, providing end-toend workflows for enterprise UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) programmes. heliguy™ is now the drone partner of organisations and companies such as Network Rail, National Grid, Phillips 66, Associated British Ports, Balfour Beatty Vinci and London Fire Brigade. With more than 20 staff, heliguy™ offers dedicated drone supply, support and consultancy, as well as pilot training, a specialist GIS division, in-house repairs, drone detection, the UK’s largest drone rental fleet, and a global logistics network.

PRODUCTS & PROCESSES

heliguy™’s expansion to product design started a few years ago with a small in-house R&D department, specialising in custom builds and sensor integration. Upscaling this to an onsite prototyping, design and manufacturing hub with industrial-grade machinery - represents the next phase of the heliguy™ R&D blueprint.

Ross said: “We spotted a gap in the market and the heliguy™ Lab is an exciting part of the business, expanding into new markets and bringing our innovation to the drone industry and working with others to bring their ideas to life.”

Brompton Bicycles benefits from increased capacity of MecWash cleaning system Following significant growth in production at Brompton Bicycles, the company needed a parts washing system that could manage the high-volume cleaning requirement at the factory. Brompton approached Tewkesbury-based MecWash to create a cleaning system that could cope with their specific and rigorous demands, a system that could clean the raw materials before brazing and still be adept at cleaning the finished components machined for the bicycle frame. After consultation with the MecWash team, Brompton ordered the MecWash Solo 600 due to its effectiveness in cleaning preservative oils, machining lubricants, metal swarf and chips from machined components. Christopher Glover, Manufacturing Engineer at Brompton, comments: “We contacted MecWash as they could create a system that could cope with the requirements at Brompton. “One of the main selling points of the machine was the bespoke main frame fixturing that the design team came up with. It is our largest component which previously had no wash requirement. We then updated our machining processes to increase part quality, but this meant that we would now have to wash our largest component, which the Solo enabled.” Paul Jarratt, sales manager at MecWash, said: “Brompton had specific requirements for their system. The Solo parts washer far outperforms traditional dunk washers, rotary basket, and tunnel washers for cleanliness and effective drying. The powerful rotational washing and hot air drying in a compact footprint provided the cleaning functions that Brompton required.” Christopher Glover continued: “The Solo removes contaminants, including coolant and swarf, which were traditionally quite challenging. Since using the Solo 600, we have seen a drastic increase in capacity which has improved the efficiency of our process.

66

MAY 2022

“The Solo 600 can clean both our large and smaller sized components in any combination of stacked fixtures. Our larger, more awkward fixtures fit easily in the 600x600 opening at the front. A further benefit has been the Health & Safety improvement, with far less lifting required from the team.” The MecWash Aqua-Save system also reduces downtime by continually recycling the wash water to keep it at its optimum condition. It continuously recovers and re-uses the wash water in the parts cleaning system so the need for disposal is significantly reduced. Water quality is maintained throughout production ensuring that parts exit the system in a clean condition, without contamination with oily residues. The only effluent resulting from the Aqua-Save is a concentrated waste, consisting of the oils, emulsions and soluble waste washed from dirty components, which represents typically less than 5% of the total water volume. Brompton’s continual investment in green technology is at the centre of the company’s ethos. John Pattison, managing director at MecWash, said: “We were confident that the Solo parts cleaning system would be a great fit for Brompton. The high cleanliness specifications combined with the requirements for improved speed and efficiency. “They are a fantastic company with a world-renowned brand and have become a standard-bearer for manufacturing in this country. The installation of the Solo 600 at Brompton has helped to create a simple, and effective cleaning process, and to reduce the risk of injury to the staff.” Brompton is Britain's biggest bicycle manufacturer and have established the company as worldwide leaders in the manufacturing of folding bicycles. In the 1970’s, Brompton founder Andrew Ritchie designed the prototype for his folding bike, and ever since, Brompton has built its reputation around highly engineered folding city bikes that

can be carried on to buses and trains. It has become one of the country’s fastest growing manufacturers, a great example of how design and technology-intensive products can be made profitably in the UK and achieve global success, with successful stores in Tokyo and New York. The ambitious and forward-thinking company is set to build a new £100 million (link) factory in the UK, due to open in 2027. Currently, Brompton are based in their West London factory in Greenford, with a welding division in Sheffield. The welding division create the titanium framesets that are welded using TIG in the specialist Sheffield factory. All Brompton core products are built by hand, and are assembled using brazing. Brompton’s’ processes include CNC machining and automatic brazing, as well as the hand brazing that the company is famous for. The Power of the Evaled™ Evaporators Evaporators are a proven method of reducing the volume of waste across a broad spectrum of markets. Heating waste forces water to evaporate from the bulk of the fluid, leaving the solids and drastically reducing the amount of waste content. This is an efficient method of waste disposal that lowers effluent discharge, protects the environment, achieves compliance with regulations, and saves costs. An example of an accomplished evaporator is the Evaled™. These are ideal for use in industrial waste and process water treatment, with a maximum capacity of 250 tonnes of distillate every 24 hours. Completely computer based for continuous function without an operator, Evaled™ evaporators allow high concentration ratios and good separation levels, as well as recycling and a decrease in volumes to be disposed. These evaporators perform consuming low energy and CO2, reducing a site’s footprint when treating industrial wastewater, but what are the applications? The Evaled™ can treat wastewater that may be considered ‘challenging’ such as hazardous or toxic streams including

automotive, aviation and other manufacturing industries, as well as the food and beverage sector and upstream and downstream treatment within the oil and gas industry. It has also been used to minimise wastewater for the power generation industry and water treatment within the mining industry. An example of the Evaled’s ability to adapt to multiple markets and high-performance rates was when we worked with a veterinary disinfection and detergent products manufacturing company The company has two purpose-built manufacturing facilities in the UK and exports to over 60 countries worldwide. Their production of disinfectants

and detergents produced substantial volumes of wastewater which they were paying £30,000 per month to have an external supplier dispose of. They needed a way to treat the highly variable effluent whilst hitting SEPA consent limits. We carried out thorough benchtop laboratory testing using a ‘worst case’ sample of effluent to identify that an EVALED® PC F6 evaporator was the most robust wastewater treatment solution. The system evaporates the waste water produced on site. The distillate has low enough biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD) to meet their discharge consent limits The lower volume concentrate can then be disposed of off site for a fraction of the cost without treatment. The EVALED unit’s capacity was more than adequate to manage and treat the effluent volume of 6 m3 per day, and the installation was successfully completed in a week. The system was commissioned and validated in two days by analysing the COD and pH of the distillate to confirm compliance with the regulations. As a result, our client now has approval from Scottish Water and SEPA to discharge the majority of its wastewater to the drain. Visit: www.veoliawatertechnologies.co.uk

Bespoke Garden Sculpture Protected For Life The team at Hull-based Humber Galvanizing Ltd has helped protect the long-term future of a garden sculpture inspired by an iconic space at The Alnwick Gardens. North Yorkshire-based Artist Blacksmith, Katie Ventress, was commissioned to produce a private sculpture inspired by the landmark’s Poison Garden, which includes around 100 toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic plants, and an iconic entrance sign featuring skull and crossbones. Katie took inspiration from the Garden’s “these plants may kill” entrance sign and created her sculpture which includes Victorian lettering to mimic old-fashioned poison bottle labels, and climbing ivy leaves, 3D skull and crossbones, and a larger-than-life spider and web in reference to the ‘False Widow’ spider. Once fabricated, Katie then sent the piece to the team at Humber Galvanizing to be hot dipped in its large molten zinc bath, a process which coats metal and protects it from corrosion. The molten zinc treatment also results in a bright silver finish, which Katie then acid-etched to create striking highlights and rustic effects. Katie explained: “Having visited the brilliant Poison Garden at Alnwick myself, I already felt inspired to make something for my customer’s garden that was completely unique to them but drew on inspiration from the iconic Poison Garden’s entrance. “I’d never made a spider or human skull before and am typically drawn to the ‘darker’

70

MAY 2022

subjects, so I was very excited to get stuck in and do something new! Galvanizing was hugely important in order to protect the outdoor piece from the elements, and the team at Humber Galvanizing did a great job as always. After all, if the sign doesn’t last for long, how will people know that the plants will kill?” According to Katie, the finish also provides her with a unique base from which to acid-etch. “I use Humber Galvanizing regularly both for long-term protection and for the design, as the silver finish allows me to create darker shading and accentuate specific details. “Once this process was done, I then polished the lettering and cobweb to make them stand out. I’m very pleased with the finished result and am thrilled to see it in pride of place in my customer’s garden.”

Tony Linsley, Sales Manager at Humber Galvanizing, added: “Katie always brings us fantastic sculptures to galvanize and it’s always an exciting moment when they are brought out fully coated from the galvanizing bath. This was certainly an eye-catching piece and we’re pleased that it’s been protected for the customer to enjoy for many years to come.” Humber Galvanizing is part of Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd, the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
