COMPANY SPOTLIGHT

Asset Disposal Services Limited are a leading UK auctioneer and selling agent of used capital plant and machinery The last year has seen an explosion in how businesses dispose of their surplus assets through professional selling agents aligned to their sector(s) and buyers using those some agents, to source ‘new’ (well, new to them) machinery. The use of online auctions of used machinery by buyers and sellers and a near virtual disappearance of physical auctions means the On-Line Auctions are now the industry norm.

What Is An Online Auction? You may have used the online auction site eBay at some time, and have become quite comfortable with how it works. In many ways an ‘online timed auction’ of used machinery is similar to the typical eBay timed auction insofar as: 1. Being Internet-based, buyers and sellers anywhere in the world come together as if under the one roof. 2. Bidders bid online against each other, unaware of the identity of competing bidders. Using an agent like ADS means bidders are also unaware of the identity of the seller. 3. The hammer comes down on a specific date and time, creating some urgency. And when it comes down, normally the highest bidder is legally committed to complete on their purchase and payment is due immediately. No credit is given. 4. The quality of the presentation of the item to the marketplace is key – how well it is described, the quality of the photographs and videos – and has a major impact on what it sells for. 5. In a ‘collective auction’, sellers can dispose of single, low value,

items of machinery, such that there is now no excuse for allowing unused machinery to get in the way of the day-to-day operations. We, Asset Disposal Services Limited, are a leading UK auctioneer and selling agent of used capital plant and machinery in the engineering, manufacturing and processing sectors. We sell our clients’ machinery through our preferred auction platform provider, BidSpotter, the world leader in industrial online auctions. Our job is to maximise the value our clients get for their unwanted machinery, without adding to their workload, by best presenting items to the appropriate market. Here are two Powder Coating Lines we are marketing RIGHT NOW for clients – in these cases under private treaty sales, another tool in our armoury - both of which are available at a fraction of the price of new and far quicker than if sourced new. https://sway.office.com/DuJCroAU6gEbMOdY https://sway.office.com/nPfouqM3IH1GlTLA Viewing these will give you an idea of the sort of work we do, so If you have any machinery that you would like to dispose of or if you are looking to buy machinery in the engineering, manufacturing or process sectors, we can be contacted by calling or emailing: Philip Stokes phil@assetdisposalservices.co.uk Paul Brindley paul@assetdisposalservices.co.uk Office - + 44(0)1902 672323 Alternatively, visit our website at www.assetdisposalservices.co.uk

Many of you are aware we do training courses but we also have different groups that when you become a member you can join. We are always keen to have new people join our groups; these include: Education and Training Examination and Qualification Board Publications Science Marketing and Membership As well as 3 branches one in Ireland, Sheffield and North East and Southern. The Groups and Branches hold their meetings every 4 – 6 weeks, meeting mainly held via Zoom.

This month’s focus is on Marketing and Membership or M&M’s So, what is the M & M’s you might ask? Well, I asked myself the same question when I was asked to join the committee of this particular sub section of the IMF. M & M stands for Membership and Marketing and its purpose is to look into how the IMF can market itself and to find ways to improve the membership and put forward new ideas to encourage new membership. After being in the M & M’s for about 1 year I was asked if I would like to be Chairman, a position I decided to give a go and have thoroughly enjoyed.

Zoom so in effect we have not had to miss too many meetings. Our meetings take place approximately every 3 – 4 weeks and are usually quite lively and I think enjoyable. (I must admit I haven’t heard anything to the contrary or they are too courteous to tell me).

The committee consists of myself and 4 others together with Helen who kindly takes all the minutes and Karen who supplies all the information on membership & education.

If anyone would be interested in joining the committee and feel they can bring some new bright ideas to the IMF then please contact Helen Wood (helen@materailsfinishing.org) who will pass on your interest. We do not bite and would certainly make you very welcome.

QUALICOAT UK & IRELAND

QUALICOAT Welcomes Tomburn By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Chair During the last few years membership of QUALICOAT in UK & Ireland has increased significantly as the QUALICOAT specification has become more widely known by specifiers in the Construction Industry. The latest company to join the Association is Tomburn, a well established architectural powder coater based in the South of England.

Tomburn’s Commercial Director, Chris Mansfield, explains the reasons for joining QUALICOAT: “Tomburn Ltd have been operating at LBL Finishers for over 25 years, working across a variety of markets and offering both Powder and Liquid Coatings. Five years ago the company decided to focus on Powder Coating and split the LBL factory operation into Steel and Aluminium coating areas. “In August last year, Paul Hepburn and I completed a management buyout of the UK Tomburn Ltd business and together we

looked at where we might be able to develop the business in the future. We discovered that we were missing some opportunities with both our current customer base and with potential new customers because we lacked Qualicoat Approval. “A review of our business with Jan Lukaszewski, Secretariat of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, identified that we could, with a few changes to plant and procedures, be able to apply for a QUALICOAT licence and that these changes would further improve the business. It was also felt that gaining Qualicoat approval would further enhance the reputation that Tomburn already has for providing a high product standard.” The QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Association is the regional association for the global QUALICOAT organisation whose head office is based in Zurich. Now with 38 members across the architectural powder coating supply chain in UK & Ireland, the finishing specification continues to gain traction in facade procurement. Applying for a QUALICOAT licence opens up the applicator up to independent third party inspections that ensures the latest QUALICOAT specification is being followed and that output is continually quality checked. Specifiers now recognise the importance of third party accreditation by specifying QUALICOAT as opposed to a BS EN 12206 specification which is reliant solely on the applicator to get it right. The global QUALICOAT Standard is incrementally revised in real time with regular update sheets and is revised to include all updates each year end. The Specification, its appendices and any update sheets are freely available for download at www.qualicoat.net. For details on the availability of various colours and finishes contact any QUALICOAT UK & Ireland member for more information. For updated information about the use and specification of QUALICOAT in the UK and Ireland, please visit the UK & Ireland Association website at www.qualicoatuki.org.

BRITISH COATINGS FEDERATION (BCF)

Sustainability and the state of the economy take centre stage at the British Coatings Federation Annual Conference Over 150 senior decision-makers from the UK's paints, coatings and printing ink sectors gathered in Birmingham for the annual British Coatings Federation (BCF) Annual Conference. The opening keynote from the UK Government’s Business Department (BEIS) highlighted the government’s growth drivers and Net Zero ambitions for energy, chemicals and coatings. The Bank of England outlined the latest economic forecasts for the UK – the economy will be stagnant for the next four years with inflation peaking at 10% this autumn. The good news is that it will drop back closer to 3% by the end of 2023. The Conference also heard from DIY expert Steve Collinge, who gave an overview of how the sector is navigating the post-Covid economic climate. On sustainability, the conference heard about the first global coatings industry’s sustainability report, to be published later this year by the World Coatings Council, followed by MAKE UK, who outlined the vision for achieving Net Zero in the manufacturing sector. This was followed by an intense panel discussion on leftover paint recycling and Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), featuring paint recyclers, metal and plastic packaging suppliers and experts on packaging and waste policy. The panel answered many of the audience’s questions surrounding the challenges and opportunities for paint recycling, and markets for leftover paint. On Packaging EPR, brand owners are faced with a new regime from 2024 which will move the cost of household waste collection and processing to brand owners. The keynote speaker Claire Lomas MBE, tells her inspiring story of recovering from a horse-riding accident in 2007, which left her paralysed from the chest down. Determined not to give up, she made worldwide headlines in 2012 when completing the London Marathon in a pioneering robotic suit taking 17 days and lit the Paralympic cauldron for London 2012. Her positive spirit, raw honesty and zest for life made a huge impact on all present. The Conference closed with BCF CEO, Tom Bowtell, taking to the stage to outline BCF’s highlights of the last year, and the challenges facing the sector. The evening dinner raised over £3,000 for the event’s charity partner, Community Heartbeat Trust, which has installed over 700 lifesaving defibrillator stations in red phone boxes across the UK, with paint provided by BCF member companies.

industry is facing today – really tough economic conditions but a huge focus '''on sustainability, with paint recycling and Net Zero being key themes for the future of BCF’s work, as well as working with the UK Government to improve the regulatory landscape." Guy closed the Conference by thanking lead sponsor Microban, and our other sponsors Fenton Packaging, LKAB, Stort Chemicals and Verlingue for their generous support.

SURFACE WORLD 2023

10 great reasons to exhibit at Surface World 2023 If your business is attracting new customers from advertising and word of mouth, it can be very tempting to write trade shows off as something that you don’t need to do to attract new customers. But trade shows can be one of the most rewarding forms of marketing when approached with the right strategy. Trade show veterans will attest to the fact that the ROI (return on investment) achieved from a successful trade show is often impossible to match in comparison to other forms of marketing. So before you write off trade shows as secondary to your current marketing tactics, it pays to learn about their benefits. Here are ten reasons which explain why trade shows should be at the top of your list.

1. Meet and connect with prospective customers One of the greatest advantages of exhibiting at a trade show is that it allows you to meet and connect with prospective customers in person instead of communicating with them over the phone. Research has shown that in-person meetings are 34 times more successful than those made via email or by phone. When meeting in person, you become someone that they know, recognise, and want to connect with. Another advantage is the trade show host uses their database to invite prospective customers to the event, using various marketing tools on your behalf to get footfall through the door. Where else can you meet

14

JUNE 2022

hundreds of prospective business opportunities all under one roof?

2. Strengthen your bond with existing customers Just like trade shows give you the opportunity to better connect with prospective customers, exhibiting at a trade show also allows you to meet your existing customers face-to-face. While most of today’s business is conducted over email or phone, face-to-face meetings are undeniably a fantastic way to do business. Trade shows are often a place for customers to approach you with their long term plans and big orders – orders that can be incredibly lucrative for you as an exhibitor. Utilising your attendance to plan meetings at the show will save you valuable time and money, rather than trying to see each in turn at their place of business.

3. Learn about new developments in your industry When your business attends an industry event, it puts you at the centre of the action. Trade shows are a place for businesses to announce and display their latest innovations and developments. In a competitive industry, would you rather be aware of your competitors or out of the loop? Exhibiting at a trade show doesn’t just give you the opportunity to make new sales and connect with existing customers, it gives you the chance to

look at cutting edge developments in your industry and the opportunities they also create for you. When you are at the show take a few hours out of your stand and see what other exhibitors are doing, this helps to keep you up to date with new technologies, techniques, products and industry trends.

4. Meet new companies that can help your business Your attendance gives you the chance to network with both prospective customers and prospective vendors. This makes a trade show more than just an opportunity to expand your distribution, but a chance to expand your supply chain. While your sales and marketing team focus on connecting with prospects to make new sales, your Purchasing Manager can connect with new vendors and contractors that can help your business grow. This makes a trade show a two-sided opportunity for your business – to expand sales, and to expand supply chains.

5. Close deals with new customers during the show There are few situations more tense than the average outbound sales call. From the

twitter: @surfaceworldmag

SURFACE WORLD 2023

endless objections of the prospective customer, to the stress of losing a valuable sale, it’s natural to face rejection and nervousness as a salesperson. At a trade show, however, the atmosphere is different. Almost half of trade show attendees make purchases at trade shows. A staggering 91 percent of all trade show attendees claim that shows are ‘extremely useful’ to their product and service sourcing efforts. When you speak to a Purchasing Manager or Director on the phone, you’re often dealing with someone that’s already juggling a variety of obligations and deals in their mind. As such, they’re understandably disinterested. At a trade show, you’re dealing with prospective customers that have made the journey to fulfil a requirement they currently have.

pace? While your sales team uses the trade show as an opportunity to meet existing customers and connect with prospective ones, spend a moment looking at the other exhibitors to see what they’re doing differently from you. Great businesses are aware of their competitors, and trade shows are one of the best opportunities to connect with competitors and understand their sales strategy, their pricing, and the reasons for their success.

8. Rapidly expand your database of sales leads

Unlike traditional outbound marketing, in which rejection is the norm, trade shows are one of the few environments in which your sales team benefits from an audience of prospective customers that are genuinely interested in buying your products and services.

While skimming through the phone book might give you thousands of unqualified phone numbers, nothing gives you qualified leads quite like a trade show. While cold calling and online marketing might not have the same initial expense as a trade show, there’s no greater way to fill your contact book with prospects than a successful trade show effort in a much shorter time frame.

6. Strengthen or establish your brand

9. Speak directly to your target market

Trade shows are one of the few environments where you have the same amount of access to prospective customers as your larger competitors do. This makes them a valuable opportunity not just for direct sales and marketing, but for strengthening your brand and positioning your business as a leader in its industry.

Email surveys are a fantastic way to learn more about what your customers want and don’t want. Unfortunately, their low response rate makes them useful only to businesses with a large enough email list to tolerate very few responses.

From free giveaways to trade show displays, there’s no better opportunity to give your brand a sizeable boost than a trade show. If you create an exhibition stand that attracts the right type of attention, a single exhibition can be all it takes to change your brand from up-andcomer to an established industry leader.

Trade shows allow you to solicit a huge amount of feedback by talking directly to visitors that have been invited to attend from various avenues within your industry. You can then use this valuable information after the show to help your business expand and improve.

A great way to get useful feedback and valuable sales leads at the same time is by conducting a short survey on your exhibition stand, and rewarding participants with vouchers or gifts from your business. Where else but a trade show can you generate new leads and valuable feedback at the same time?

10. Optimise your sales and lead generation strategy Trade shows are an excellent opportunity to expose your sales team to hundreds of different prospects in a short period of time. A perfect opportunity to test new sales tricks and marketing strategies in a very responsive environment. If you want to test and optimise your lead generation strategy, you’ll find no better place than a trade show. Try several different sales pitches on prospects and you’ll quickly learn which ones work and which ones don’t, allowing you to perfect your sales strategies in just a few days. You can then use these honed skills when out on the road or at future trade events. The next Surface World is to take place on 4th and 5th October 2023 at the NEC in Birmingham. Reservations are already being taken. If you are interested in exhibiting at the show or would like to advertise in the Surface World magazine or on the website, please call Nigel Bean on +44 (0) 1442 826826 to discuss your requirements. Or you can send an email to nigelbean1@aol.com.

Surface World – Re-Connecting The Industry

7. Learn what your competitors are doing right In the world of business, it pays to keep your customers close and your competitors closer. Exhibiting at a trade show allows you to observe what your competitors are doing right and apply their tactics to your own business. Is there a particular competitor in your industry that seems to be growing at a rapid

CONVEYORS & MATERIALS HANDLING

Improve your efficiency using an overhead conveyor The Railtechniek van Herwijnen Group of companies, which Stewart Gill Conveyors Ltd have been a long time member of, provides complete solutions for complex requirements in the field of materials handling. They produce a wide range of overhead conveyors and materials handling products, such as manual conveyors, chain conveyors, power and free conveyors and crane systems. For the surface finishing industry the most frequently delivered systems are Power and Free conveyors. P&F conveying systems offer a high degree of flexibility and they can be completely automated. P&F systems are equipped with load bars to attach the products. The products can be transported through the complete process (Power) or stopped for buffering or treatment (Free) without stopping the complete system. Stewart Gill Conveyors Ltd offer a wide range of P&F systems, suitable for carrying capacities up to 9.000 kg per load bar. They specialise in systems for wet paint and powder coating lines, blasting installations, assembly lines, logistic and storage systems. A system that they offer specially for the surface-treatment industry is a dipping tank crane system. Dipping cranes transport metal

products in and out of a series of pretreatment tanks.

Advantages of a Power & Free Conveyor Compact and save design with movable parts inside the tack Modular system with standard parts Flexible design for optimal lay-out planning Advanced automatic control system with touch screen user interface and remote access.

Components Different standard components are available to design the most optimal conveyor lay-out. The track sections are available as Power & Free, Free or only Power in standard or cut-to-length sections. Bends can be horizontal or vertical. The radius of the bends is often standard. Non standard bends can be made on request. The power chain comes in standard chain link pitches and can be fitted with open or closed bearings. Depending on product dimensions and the conveyor lay-out the product carrier can have different trolley configurations. Using multiple trolleys the load capacity of carrier can be increased. A Power & Free system needs a drive system. Depending on system parameters the drive mechanism can be a caterpillar drive or a

screw drive unit. For safety all drive units are utilised with a torque limiter that disconnects the drive force between the drive unit and gear motor. Stop stations are available as standard design, ATEX or high temperature for curing ovens. Stop stations are controlled and monitored by the PLC/PC control system. Switches are installed at the position where carriers must divert to other directions. Pneumatic cylinders with position sensors are used to actuate the switches. Depending on the position in the lay-out switches can also be self-switching. Switches are also controlled and monitored by the main control system. To avoid as much as possible wear of the chain and trolleys a lubrication unit can be used. This automatic controlled device lubricates parts such as the chain links and bearings on a pre-set interval. Special parts are available such as lift- and drop sections, transfer chains, pneumatic pushers and product rotation units. There are also solutions to have a dipping tank crane system take over the products from the carriers and after the dipping process hang them back onto the carriers. PAINT ROBOTS & AUTOMATION

How is automation amplifying process within the inks and coatings space? The benefits of automation within the world of coatings testing are clear – better repeatability, elimination of human error, saving on cost, maximizing resource – but how are new innovations impacting laboratories? Industrial Physics – the test and inspection company made up of brands such as TQC Sheen and C&W Equipment – explore this issue.

Automate your inks and coatings testing solutions

Automated alternatives Many tools now offer an automated alternative – take a film applicator for example. Historically, manufacturers and labs would have to rely on human influence when applying coatings across many substrates. But now – with advanced technology like the TQC Sheen Automated Film Applicator - this application can be automated. As a result, the risk of error that comes with human application disappears. With an automated solution, a user can set applicators to a desired level to achieve a much more consistent and stable approach, and truly determine a constant speed, downforce, and substrate –hugely important factors for the final result. Depending on the viscosity of your coatings, this can make a world of difference.

Save time AND access better data! It’s not just the automation of existing testing systems that are changing the game – automated accessories and complementary components can massively disrupt the testing experience for users. Take the TQC Sheen LinQ - a communication tool that allows a user to connect our larger testing systems to their own software. From viscosity testing to washability testing, to film application, utilizing this component can completely revolutionize your approach to testing across a broad stroke of applications. Just imagine you’re in a development environment exploring UV curing coating systems – where timing between application and curing is critical.

30

JUNE 2022

The Evolution of Inks & Coatings testing.

The LinQ allows you to connect an instrument of ours directly to your own software. Your software is then able to control the settings of the film applicator and automatically make adjustments in accordance with your specifications! Where you would normally integrate your UV system to the tool carrier, now you can also directly control this through your software. And this is only one example as to how our LinQ can be utilized – there are so many combinations that can be explored. Not only does this approach allow you to maximize time and resource, but it also offers an integrated data connection that lets you identify points of failure across testing - data that can prove especially useful within a laboratory environment. For example, if you wanted to identify an issue with scratching on a substrate, automated technology like the LinQ allows you to track the scratch, follow the patterns, discover where more scratches are appearing, and ultimately determine the precise point of failure.

About Industrial Physics Industrial Physics is a global packaging, product, and material test and inspection partner made up of a range of testing brands including TQC Sheen and C&W Equipment.

You can find out about how we support manufacturers, production lines, and laboratories across a wide scope of industries by visiting our website – www.industrialphysics.com!

TESTING & MEASUREMENT

Inspection Plans for Car Paint Quality Control For a variety of reasons, assessing the quality of paint coatings on car bodies is increasing in importance. Narrow tolerance limits and strong demand for smooth finishes require precise measurements of the coating thickness according to clearly defined testing procedures. In addition, the measurement results should provide clues for potential process optimizations. Therefore, consistent inspection procedures – regardless of who is doing the measuring – are also essential. Paint finishes on car bodies must fulfil a range of criteria: Not only should they provide sufficient corrosion protection (therefore requiring at least a minimum thickness) while simultaneously containing costs (minimum material waste), the colour and texture must also be even and homogeneous. To check all these criteria systematically, test measurements should always be taken at the same spots, in the same way, regardless of who is currently executing the inspection. Using simplified surface development drawings, precise inspection specifications can be displayed for the examiner, showing exactly where the paint coating is to be measured. However, such sequences are

often very complex and therefore susceptible to operator failure. The FISCHER DataCenter IP (Inspection Plan) software makes it possible to create processcontrolled inspection plans that can be loaded onto handheld DUALSCOPE® FMP100 measuring instruments. Enhanced by images and text, the inspection plan clearly guides the user step-by-step through the measurement tasks like a navigation system. The readings can then be downloaded directly to the PC for easy evaluation, archival and printing (with customisable templates). For this purpose a wide variety of analysis and statistic functions, as well as supporting graphical displays, are available. The Fischer DataCenter IP software and

DUALSCOPE® FMP100 handheld instruments put powerful tools of strategic quality control directly into inspectors’ hands: Structured measurement recording and extensive evaluation options help to highlight potential improvements in production processes, while step-by-step guidance through the complete measurement cycle not only minimizes errors and increases consistency but also makes these instruments suitable for use even by non-technical staff. For more information please contact your local FISCHER representative: FISCHER INSTRUMENTATION (GB) LTD Telephone: 01386 577370 Visit: www.fischerinstrumentation.co.uk

JUNE 2022

Elcometer 224 Surface Profile Gauge & ElcoMaster® Mobile

When testing the porosity of protective coatings on pipelines, ballast tanks and other structures in the field, once a flaw has been located and marked, it needs to be repaired. Current methods for repairing or patching coatings in the field can vary wildly, and are not always the most consistent from repair-to-repair. As a result, the quality of the repair can vary, leading to inconsistent poor quality results. Current methods can be wasteful, using a lot more coating than is actually required. The new Elcopatch™ from Elcometer ensures

a consistent method of high quality repair to assure asset owners and contractors. Its simple design ensures high quality repairs every time whilst saving money by only using the amount of coating you need. Elcopatch™ is easy to use, once the pinhole has been identified using a holiday detector, mark up the flaw. Then using the magnetic or non-magnetic abrasion ring as a guide, abrade the surface and wipe clean. Remove the abrasion ring and apply the Elcopatch™, then inject the coating using the manual coating applicator and allow to cure. Once the coating has cured, peel the Elcopatch™

away from the substrate, revealing the repaired coating. In colder climates, you can use the Elcopatch 165 heater pouch to preheat the coating to 50°C (112°F) to improve the coating flow, making it easier to apply. For consistent high quality repairs repeat the process on all your coating flaws. It’s that simple. Offering quality, repeatable repairs in minutes the Elcopatch™ kit comes with everything you need to repair flaws, ideal for use with most approved coatings that are supplied in 50ml (1.8oz) tubes. A powder coating that makes plastics conductive FreiLacke adds a highly innovative conductive primer to its system coatings range It is still considered a challenge to provide plastics with a highperformance powder coating. Thanks to a special pigmentation, the new UR 1967 conductive primer from FreiLacke makes their surfaces conductive, which means that they can be coated with the same material as metals. As a result, UR 1967 perfectly complements the company's family of system coatings. Plastics are lightweights with very good static properties. That makes them a great choice for the production of components in many industries, such as the automotive sector, in mechanical engineering as well as the furniture and sanitary sectors. Their downside: They are only somewhat suited for powder coatings since they often cannot withstand the high baking temperatures. But what do you do if a customer wants the plastic components of their machines to look like the metal attachments and provide them with the same surface structure? How can you create a harmonious overall look? The horizontal system coatings from FreiLacke provide the solution: These are different coating systems that are so well tailored to various substrates that the coated components are perfectly matched in terms of their colour, gloss and structure, and they can be installed next to one another without diminishing their look.

and thereby optimally EFDEDUR conductive primer UR1967 prepares it for the electrostatic application The EFDEDUR UR1967 conductive primer is a solvent-based 2C polyurethane of a top coat. “First, the primer based on an acrylic resin cross-linked with isocyanate. It is well suited for plastic substrates, such as polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile/butadiene/ primer is applied to the styrene copolymers (ABS) and others. The matt conductive primer features a non-conductive substrate viscosity on delivery of 35-45 seconds/4 mm viscosity cup; its maximum using the conventional processing time is 2 h at 20°C. Oven drying possible up to 80°C; in the case pneumatic process. Thanks of air drying, the conductive primer is dust dry after 10 minutes (degree of drying 1/ DIN EN ISO 9117-5), dry to the touch after 1.5 h (degree of to its stable binding agent drying 4/ DIN EN ISO 9117-5) and completely dry after 7 days (pendulum base, UR1967 survives the damping/ DIN EN ISO 1522). And This ensures a permanently good adhesion this results in a much better finish”, explains to the substrate. Andreas Hepting from FreiLacke's Industry

Effectively avoiding overspray The result: Using the UR1967M conductive primer, even plastic attachments can be prepared in a way to ensure that they can be coated with the same powder as the rest of the object that is to be coated. Ideally, the primed plastic parts can be installed before the object receives its top coat. This offers the big advantage of not having to apply the top coat to each individual component. Another advantage: There is less overspray than if each individual component had to be coated. “All of these measures

Thanks to the new conductive primer from FreiLacke, it is now also possible to powder coat plastic parts on workpieces.

Sales department. In order to successfully use the primer, the coating systems and the plastic have to be well coordinated. The plastic as well as the conductive primer have to withstand the thermal loads in the powder furnace. In addition, the primer layer has to be applied evenly all over. This prevents disruptions to the electrostatic field and therefore prevents coating faults in the top coat. For more information visit: www.freilacke.de Even when aluminium meets plastics on the workpiece, it still allows a homogeneous result to be achieved in the end.

Special pigmentation Plastics generally don’t have good conductive characteristics, which means that a direct coating using an electrostatic process is not possible. This is where the new FreiLacke EFDEDUR UR1967 conductive primer comes into play: Thanks to its special pigmentation, it makes the surface of the plastics conductive

Interpon Helps Illuminate the Power of Powder Coatings Through Partnership with 3Brothers Interpon, the powder coatings brand from AkzoNobel, is helping 3Brothers, a leading international lighting design and manufacturer in Egypt, to accelerate its growth and support its sustainability ambitions through the proven durability of the Interpon Redox range. Egypt has many extremes of temperature, with high salinity in the air and frequent sandstorms. This means that the coatings applied to the lighting products – many of which are used outside – have to be durable. This protects them against corrosion, and helps maintain the integrity and stability of the color even in harsh sunlight. The Interpon team therefore worked with experts within 3Brothers to conduct a series of extensive in-house trials before reaching a conclusion. They have decided upon Interpon’s Redox Plus range with a UV resistant topcoat as providing the most effective protection in the challenging environment of North Africa where the manufacturer’s products are primarily sold.

The Redox Plus range is a powder primer protective barrier that gives enhanced corrosion protection across a range of metal substrates, from mild steel to aluminum. It can protect products for C5 environment for 7 to 15 years, while providing more than 25 years of durability in a C3 corrosivity level. The collaborative approach from the local AkzoNobel team during testing and trialing was key to establishing the successful partnership which is now exploring Interpon’s other innovations. George Micheal, CEO of 3Brothers, says that reputation is everything and he cannot afford for his products to fail: “The Interpon team was very helpful in providing samples so we could assess how their products behaved on different materials and in different conditions when subjected to corrosion,” he explains. Sustainability is a key focus area for both businesses. As a powder coating, Interpon’s Redox Plus is free from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), meaning it is less harmful to the environment: “Sustainability is very important to us as a business and clients are increasingly specifying the use of powder coatings,” George adds.

Sanal Limoncuoğlu, Commercial Director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings South and East Europe agrees: “Working with 3Brothers using products with a proven performance highlights the value of building meaningful partnerships with businesses that share our passion for innovation and sustainability. These partnerships are key to our mutual success and delivering long-term, sustainable growth.” The collaboration between the two businesses extends beyond the powder in the box. While performance is vital, and costs need to remain competitive, the additional testing that George’s team performs are also shared with AkzoNobel’s technical teams. This supports further research and development into how Interpon Redox performs in extreme conditions. 3Brothers has also been quick to embrace the antimicrobial technology in Interpon AM for lighting products used in hospital and healthcare environments. They are also now exploring the use of Interpon 610 Low-E powder coatings – coatings that can be cured more quickly or at lower temperatures – to improve productivity and/or to further reduce energy consumption. “We are excited about our collaboration with AkzoNobel Powder Coatings as experts in making paints and bringing surface to life,” George adds, “and look forward to working with them in assuring our long-term manufacturing success.” 3Brothers was founded more than 30 years ago and has grown to become a hugely successful business with a 20-25% market share in Egypt alone. The company designs and manufactures more than 6,000 different products, from interior downlights to exterior streetlights, servicing both retail and commercial segments. Straaltechniek UK Provides Peening Upgrades for Melling Performance Springs Over the past 25 years Performance Springs (now Melling Performance Springs) have proudly established themselves as a leading innovator in the field of high-performance spring technology and bespoke spring manufacturing, with a global reputation for excellence, quality, and reliability. Recently the team at Melling Performance Springs discussed the potential requirement to increase their capacity for batch peening bespoke manufactured springs which they provide for specialist applications. Not only did they look to increase their capacity but also wanted to see where improvements could be made with the peening process through new technology. As a valued customer of Straaltechniek UK, who have been providing assistance through servicing and supplying spares on their existing 2 shot peening machines John Featherstone (Business Support Manager, Melling Performance Springs) made contact with James Lees (UK Sales Manager, Straaltechniek UK) to see what options were available for supplying a machine, with upgraded features that would improve the peening process. After further discussions a site visit was arranged to discuss the options further with Phil Turner (Technical and Product Quality Manager, Melling Performance Springs) and a quotation was provided for a 2nd hand refurbished 85lt capacity rubber belt peening machine to include upgrades including their High Performance Long Life Blast Wheel with inverter to control the peening intensity, Automatic Abrasive Media Replenisher to ensure the correct working mix of abrasive is in the system providing better coverage on the batch of springs being peened as well as an additional door safety interlock.

Phil Turner, Technical and Product Quality Manager at Melling Performance Springs said; Our business is centred around very demanding, high performance, high stress, fatigue critical products. The Shot peening process is an extremely critical process for the company and these types of products. As a hands on Technical and Quality guy, I’m always looking into ways to improve our process control and new technologies to enable us to refine/ improve our processes. Straaltechniek UK Ltd are a dynamic company that were able to tailor a very specific combination of machine modifications to meet and exceed our expectations. Using a combination of Alman Arc testing and XRD (Xray diffraction), we have been able to see tangible compressive residual stress benefits from the improved Kinematics that the direct drive, curved bladed, GN blast Wheel induces during the peening cycle. The auto replenishment system adds an extra level of process control to the machine. The CCW (conditioned cut wire) mix and throughput is more consistent, giving improved batch peening consistency/repeatability. Crispian Knight, Managing Director at Melling Performance Springs said: “The new blast wheel intensity delivers improved performance, which in turn improves product quality and the cycle time reduction reduces energy costs, all around a great new investment for the company”

Melling then asked about the possibility of supplying these same upgrades onto the 2 machines already on site at Melling and a revised quote to include for taking both machines back to Straaltechniek UK’s workshop and adding these key features and after the quotation was reviewed an order was place for the full package offered, which included the initial 2nd hand refurbished machine, as well as the 2 existing peening machines being upgraded as well. The 1st of the 3 machines on this order is now complete and after successful trials in Straaltechniek UK’s show room in Sheffield, the machine was delivered and installed and is providing the best results Melling have seen and can also reduce their cycle times meaning increased production through this machine. Work on the next machine is now being started and will no doubt provide the same type of results by using the same state of the art technology as the 85ltr machine.

Nano-coatings: Protecting your work environment inside and out Nano-ceramic and nano-coatings have evolved over the last 40 years to protect many different types of surface in domestic, commercial and industrial settings, from the washroom to moving metal parts. Nano-coatings provide a range of functions from heavy-duty corrosion protection and increased durability, to making life easier and safer with easy-clean formulations and active long term antimicrobial surface kill. To understand how these coatings can offer such a wide range of functions and benefits from one genre, it’s important to focus on specific nano-coating chemistry . The category in focus is based on nanoscale molecules of silicon dioxide (Si02), hydrogen and nitrogen. State-of-the-art technology combines these components to produce a ‘glass-like coating’ that can adhere to natural, synthetic or metallic surfaces. The coating becomes part of the substrate – enhancing performance and delivering new functionality to the surface. In many instances, the new or enhanced functionality offers the ability to repel liquids and dirt, as

58

JUNE 2022

well as resisting scratches and UV radiation. Due to the permanent and inert nature of the coatings’ bond with the surface, they are highly abrasion resistant. For any such coating, mechanical, weathering and abrasion resistance information should be readily available, ideally to an ISO standard. Due to the extensive range of functionalities that nano-coatings offer, they make maintaining your business’s external environment easier as they can be used to: Protect building exteriors from graffiti and bird dropping damage as well as unsightly gum Make glass and signage easy to clean Reduce lichen, moss and fungus build-up Resist water ingress The importance of external maintenance is never lost on employees, customers and visitors, contributing to brand image and projecting that all-important first impression, whilst also reducing perpetual maintenance costs Internally, nano coatings have the ability not just to maintain the aesthetics and performance of a building’s glass, kitchen surfaces and washrooms, but also to help maintain your employees’ health and wellbeing with the use of antimicrobial coatings, such as Liquid Guard™. Nano-Care’s market-leading product has proven to be effective throughout the turmoil of the last two years, helping businesses remain operational while keeping their cleaning costs manageable. Though pandemic restrictions have now been removed, every business has a heightened

awareness of how easily illness can spread (especially during flu season) along with its health and welfare responsibilities. Due to Liquid Guard’s active anti-microbial ingredient and the resulting surface structure, it physically kills microbes that land on it from a sneeze, cough or hand transfer – constantly. Liquid Guard (and Liquid Guard Textile) permanently adheres to hard surface substrates (and textiles) such as tables, door handles, stair bannisters and touch screens. It is scratch resistant, free from SVHC’s and its effectiveness has been tested and certified against enveloped viruses such as Influenza A and SARS CoV-2. Once applied, regular prepandemic cleaning routines can be reinstated for normal upkeep to remove dust and debris from the surface, while the coating only requires reapplication in twelve months’ time. The burning question: Can a once-a-year coating really keep a surface constantly free from viruses? Yes! Liquid Guard applicators and end users (including UK Government service providers) undertake adenosine triphosphate (ATP) testing on surfaces post-application to verify effectiveness, and the results can be found on our website. Liquid Guard permanent bond antimicrobial coating offers facilities managers a real alternative to continual wiping down of surfaces – morning, noon and night. It delivers long-term, independently tested and certified antimicrobial action that is financially sustainable: today, next week and in 52 weeks’ time! Visit: www.nano-care.co.uk

Cox Powertrain use MecWash Solo to assist with global expansion Cox Powertrain, the innovative British manufacturers of high-powered diesel outboard engines, contacted MecWash to find a parts washing system to assist their cleaning processes. After a period of growth, the engineers found that the workload had increased substantially and Cox needed to improve efficiency. Peter Woodhead, manufacturing engineer at Cox Powertrain, said: “We contacted MecWash following recommendations we had received from our hydraulics supplier who already had a MecWash cleaning system. Speaking with Paul Jarratt, sales manager at MecWash, it was clear MecWash could provide the machines which could cope with the workload. The main goal with the parts washing machine was to clean the coolant and swarf from aluminium machined parts and hydraulic components .” Paul comments: “After talking to Peter and listening to Cox’s situation, the Solo was the most suitable machine thanks to its ability to remove preservative oils, machining lubricants, metal swarf and chips from machined components. The MecWash Solo provides powerful rotational spray washing and hot air drying to clean the contamninents from their machined parts. The compact footprint of the Solo makes it an ideal choice for a busy workshop where floorspace is at a premium. Peter Woodhead continued: “The Solo has given the team confidence the components will be clean and dry plus the efficiency of the machine means the growth we have seen on the production line does not impact the cleanliness standards of our work.” The Cox Powertrain story is remarkable. In the 1990s, Charles Good began his search for a lightweight diesel engine capable of satisfying the large global demand for a diesel outboard engine. After being unable to find one, he secured the financial backing needed to create one. Cox Powertrain was then able to purpose build state-of-the-art production facilities. Smart technology and delivery of exceptional quality standards help ensure the flawless quality of the Cox Powertrain engines. Today, Cox Powertrain are worldwide leaders with their V8 diesel outboard, the CXO300 which has proved popular due to safety, superior performance,

reliability and equipment life span by taking the best from the automotive world and combining it with the very best technologies from the marine industry. The CXO300 diesel outboard represents a new generation of technology which includes up to 30% fuel savings and 30% less CO2 emissions. This is perfect for both commercial and recreational use, and the CXO300 engine is being enjoyed by yachting enthusiasts around the world. John Pattison, managing director at MecWash, comments: “We are confident that our advanced washing system will surpass the cleaning results Cox Powertrain require. Our commitment to working closely with our

customers means we are able to support Cox in getting the optimum cleaning solution. “The uniqueness of their product, the scaling of the business and the effective fundraising has put Cox in a very strong position moving forward and I look forward to following their journey.” adds John.
