QUALICOAT REVEALS THE SECRET TO CONSISTENT QUALITY By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT Chair It is still considered that ‘painting’ can cover a poor substrate to make anything look good, but for the wise, for a limited time. Substrate preparation on any material is crucial for longevity of the applied finish, with a poorly executed substrate preparation, failures can often be seen within twelve months. The same can be said about powder coating. There are numerous companies in the architectural aluminium coating industry who can coat to a price, the problem is, the coating can look excellent at first, but time tells another story and one that can turn out to be very, very costly. The problem with any national quoted standard is that it can be claimed, but often not substantiated without physical checking of the product supplied, or indeed a process review of the supplier. As a customer, how can you be sure you are getting the quality you specify? Most of you reading right now know that all quality powder coatings consists of a robust pretreatment followed by the application of powder coating, but, can you make a visit to every supplier in a contract prior to placing an order to check that this is being done? Don’t let a competitive coating price be the deciding factor, reducing the quality of, or worst still eliminating the pretreatment, cannot readily be seen on the finished product.

6

The global QUALICOAT label exists to offer transparency to all specifiers. All architectural powder coaters work to the QUALICOAT Specification which is updated in real time to accommodate results of research and the adoption of new technologies. The current Specification is also freely available, without cost, for all to review from QUALICOAT’s own website. Most importantly Members of QUALICOAT are only licensed following twice yearly unannounced inspections from an independent test house, members not coating to the exact Specification, can and have lost their licence to carry and display the coveted third party accredited quality label.

As you would expect from the very name of the Association, consistency in supplying quality is paramount for the applicator licence holders who are members of the Association. The secret to quality is only achieved by regular monitoring of the powder coating process through the Member’s own test laboratory and this is where the laboratory technicians are crucial in the powder coating process. Over the last few years the Association has made it mandatory that all QUALICOAT licence holder’s own laboratory technicians attend a refresher training course at least once every two years. This ensures that the latest developments in the QUALICOAT Specification for production monitoring and production testing is implemented and maintained. This, in turn, ensures compliance with the Specification when unannounced applicator plant inspections are undertaken every six months. Passing these quality audits ensures that an applicator maintains their licence to offer the QUALICOAT Specification. For specifiers this is a key reason why they specify QUALICOAT for all their architectural powder coating.

The yearly training meetings are organised by IFO who are QUALICOAT UK & Ireland’s independent test house located in Germany. The last training day, held yearly, took place in Daventry in November 2023 with a record number of sixty laboratory technicians in attendance. Testing equipment was made available for the testing of chrome-free analysis including photometers and a hand held x-ray spectrometer. Members came from all over the UK and Ireland to discuss the Specification updates and listen to technical presentations. Brought to the event was a Q-SUN Xe-1 xenon arc chamber which reproduces the damage caused by full-spectrum sunlight and rain. In use over a few days or weeks, the Q-SUN test equipment can reproduce the damage that occurs over

months or years in the harshest of environments. Oliver Boegler, Head of Inspections at IFO, gave an overview of coating various aluminium alloys, coating testing methods and an update on the latest QUALICOAT Specification and pending updates being introduced in 2024. With several new powder coating applicators receiving their licences recently and further powder coating applicators currently

undergoing training and review by IFO, the vast majority of quality architectural powder coaters in the UK & Ireland are now licensed to supply to the QUALICOAT Specification and carry the prestigious QUALICOAT label.

The up-to-date QUALICOAT Specification is available for download via the UK & Ireland Association website, qualicoatuki.org and the website offers an up-to-date list of licensed UK and Ireland Powder Suppliers, Pretreatment Suppliers and Applicators including the applicators who carry the Seaside class accreditation. Telephone support is available from QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Head Office in the Midlands on 0330 240 9735, the Association can also be followed on Twitter @Qualicoatuki or on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/ company/qualicoat-uk-&-ireland.

KESTREL JOINS QUALICOAT By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT Chair Kestrel Aluminium Systems have recently been awarded a QUALICOAT license for their powder coating plant and process, they join a further twenty-five professional architectural powder coaters across the UK & Ireland who hold the coveted status. The award was presented by QUALICOAT Chair, Angus Mackie of VertikAl to Nicki Baylis of Kestrel at the last Members meeting of 2023 held at QUALICOAT UK & Ireland’s offices in Daventry Established in 1989 Kestrel Aluminium Systems began as a distributor of Shopfront Systems. Over the thirty-five years, the privately owned company has grown from strength to strength to become a reputable nationwide fenestration systems house developing commercial and domestic aluminium systems to meet the ever changing needs of the UK market. More recently Kestrel invested in a ‘state of the art’ powder coating facility at their headquarters in Birmingham.

Installed to a high standard, the plant has quickly become established in the region. Nickie Baylis comments on the decision to invest, “To support our customers and offer an unrivalled speedy turnaround of powder coated profiles coated to a high standard, we decided to add a powder coating facility to our group portfolio. With the investment, we always had the intention to become QUALICOAT approved and the Association has been very helpful with advice and support, culminating in the awarding of our QUALICOAT licence at the last members meeting.” Kestrel’s powder coating facility can handle profiles up to 7m in length and offer further services such as thermal breaking, taping protection and profile stripping when required. STRAALTECHNIEK UK PROUD TO CONTRIBUTE TO SHEFFIELDS COMMITMENT OF SUSTAINABILITY It is important to Straaltechniek UK that they carry on with their sustainable practices and contribute towards Sheffield’s commitment to environmental sustainability which is encouraged throughout the business and is something they are very proud of, especially by being part of the ‘Made in Sheffield’ brand and with representation from their Chairman Graham Ward, Managing Director Andy Allen and Sales Director Jay Dorling as Freemen of the Cutlers Association in Sheffield. Straaltechniek UK over the years have implemented good working practices to contribute towards the companies sustainability through introducing various improvements at the site in Sheffield such as solar panels to the offices and main factory workshop, LED lighting throughout the premises installed, newly installed electrical charging points for electric vehicles and recently invested in new equipment in their machine shop that can do the work of multiple machines which means they can now use less energy to produce more parts on a single machine. This has allowed them to cut down energy usage, and therefore cost saving whilst being able to achieve higher production levels. Straaltechniek have consciously reduced overall mileage between the Sales and Service Fleet by working smarter in various ways such as vehicle sharing as well as arranging more meetings via online platforms such as Teams, Zoom, etc where possible. The company has also now started to look at the companies fleet of vehicles and has now installed electrical charging points for parts of the fleet which are now full electric. Further to this, they now install Modems within every PLC control panel on new equipment they supply into industry which allows remote access for making changes and can provide immediate support to their customers without having to travel to and from site which has proved very beneficial all round, they also install energy efficiency

14

cleaning controllers on their dust collectors, these work on a differential pressure of the filters meaning that it only pulses when the filters are dirty, saving compressed air consumption. Straaltechniek also introduced the High Performance Long Life GN Blasting Wheel Technology, and this incorporates the beneficial principle of forward curve blades into its revolutionary blast wheel and blade support concept. By design, collision speeds of the abrasive are reduced at the entrance to the blast wheel leading to decreased wear of both blades and abrasive. With the unique shot/grit projection angle, the GN WHEEL® allows the projection speed of the abrasive to increase by 25 %, leading to a significant decrease (10-25%) in abrasive usage compared to wheels equipped with radial blades. The efficiency of the GN WHEEL® is up to 70% higher than traditional shot blasting wheels. The GN WHEEL® is available in diameters between 300 and 500mm and can be fitted to turbines of all current and obsolete manufacturers machines. By retrofitting existing machines with the new GN wheel gives customers enormous advantages! In addition to this, the GN Blasting Wheel technology utilizes 25% less energy and achieves the same result. Although Straaltechniek promote a 25% energy saving using the High-

Performance Long Life GN Blasting Wheel Technology, feedback from customers who have implemented this technology have achieved a 50% energy saving using this technology, which proves that depending on the process, 50% energy saving is achievable. Straaltechniek UK are committed to continue improving the companies sustainability by introducing further improvements at the site in Sheffield, consciously working in smarter ways to save energy overall, and will implement further working practices so that the company can continue to contribute to Sheffield’s commitment to environmental sustainability. transfer from leg one to leg two which enabled the installation to be fully installed with ease.

were consequential savings in effluent costs, both plant and on-going foul sewer costs.

Each leg has a load/ unload station enabling multiple, integrated programming of cleaning and chemical processing simultaneously, realising the benefit of increased productive output efficiency utilising our random-access software. Combined with SCADA and management data acquisition which is, linked to the company’s production server. This provides a powerful management and production tool.

The customer, unusually, had very limited additional electrical power within the factory where the installation of the new plant was to take place. Electrical heating would have exceeded the electrical capacity and a new cable supply would have to have been installed. This installation would have increased the project costs and seriously delayed the project, along with increasing the plant running costs using electrical heating.

Water discharge saving of 80% Water treatment is integral to the successful operation of this equipment. All rinse water must be less than 20µScm-1 and sufficient to provide excellent rinse efficiency. Although space limitations ruled out double or triple counterflow rinses, there was an opportunity to provide rinse water recirculation. This would enhance rinse water at the correct conductivity, with reduced discharge to foul sewer, thus dramatically reducing risk to the environment along with reducing treatment and discharge cost to the business. A detailed evaluation of the parts and chemistry was undertaken to calculate the volumes of water required and suitability for recirculation, utilising ion exchange deionisation. This extensive evaluation showed conclusively in favour of water recirculation and provided a water discharge saving of over 80% of the volume to drain. Therefore, there

28

Full in-depth feasibility study Plastratum again undertook an in-depth feasibility study and was able to show the customer that a gas fired thermal fluid boiler and distribution system was a beneficial and cost-effective option which was advantageous to the installation and ideal for the customers’ needs. It was shown that the payback on capital investment would be as little as one and a half years, comparing the electrical costs against the cost of gas, the quantity of which was more than an adequate supply within the factory.

The major benefits of Thermal Fluid heating systems are: The system only needs once a year servicing. It is non-corrosive unlike steam and medium temperature hot water. It does not require water treatment or boiler blow-down There is no additional expense of chemical additions.

The fume extraction is a centralised common installation from both legs of the plant and supports the differential volumetric tank lid technology. The use of lids is instrumental in reducing the fume extraction volume using a turn down of 70%. Therefore, it is not only a much-reduced plant sizing and factory footprint allocation when compared to open tank fume extraction, it also reduces the quantity of expensive heated factory air to atmosphere. Once again this is of great financial benefit for the customer as it reduces operating costs. The company is headed by Mike Taylor, Managing Director, a specialist in Effluent Treatment and Rinse Water Recirculation systems, Roger Speck with over 40 years’ experience in Chemical Engineering and Electroplating Equipment and Glenn Williams for fume extraction and odour control products. Due to our continuous product development and in house design, coupled with a commitment to high quality and technical standards, we are able to secure total turnkey projects. We have demonstrated that we are able to design, manufacture install and commission complete plant, equipment and associated products which are providing major financial benefits for our customers. Why not allow us to help you with your investment with our “safety critical fabrications” and product value. MASS FINISHISHING & SHOT BLASTING FOR MEDICAL AND AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS Colin Spellacy, Head of Sales, Rösler UK In the precision-driven realms of the medical and aerospace industries, the roles of mass finishing and shot blasting technologies cannot be overstated. These processes, crucial for achieving the high degree of surface perfection required in these sectors, are instrumental in ensuring both the reliability and safety of critical components. This article delves into the intricate world of mass finishing and shot blasting, exploring their application in the medical and aerospace fields, and underscoring why these technologies are indispensable for maintaining the stringent quality standards that these industries demand. By examining their impact on product durability, performance, and compliance with rigorous specifications, we gain insight into how these finishing processes are not just about aesthetics, but are fundamental to the functionality and integrity of the components used in life-saving medical devices and high-performance aerospace systems.

MASS FINISHING AND SHOT BLASTING Mass finishing and shot blasting are two distinct industrial processes used for surface finishing of components, each with its unique method and application. Mass finishing, encompassing techniques like tumbling, vibratory finishing, and centrifugal finishing, involves placing parts in a machine with abrasive media, where they are finished through a combination of mechanical and chemical actions. This method is particularly effective for deburring,

30

smoothing, polishing, and cleaning a large number of small to medium-sized parts simultaneously, making it ideal for intricate components with complex geometries. The gentle and controlled nature of mass finishing ensures uniform treatment of all surfaces, crucial in industries like medical, where precision and consistency are paramount. Shot blasting, on the other hand, employs the forceful projection of abrasive materials, such as steel or glass beads, against the surface of the component. This high-energy process is

excellent for cleaning, strengthening (peening), or roughening surfaces, and is often used for larger, more robust components. Its aggressive nature makes it suitable for removing heavy scale, rust, or old coatings, and it is commonly employed in industries like aerospace and automotive for preparing surfaces for painting or coating. The choice between mass finishing and shot blasting depends on the specific requirements of the application: mass finishing is preferred for delicate, precision parts requiring uniform treatment, while shot blasting is chosen for its aggressiveness and suitability for larger, tougher components needing thorough surface preparation.

MASS FINISHING AND SHOT BLASTING IN MEDICAL AND AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS In the medical industry, mass finishing, prior to final sterilisation in accordance with applicable medical regulations, is essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of various devices. The process is widely used to smooth and polish implantable devices, surgical instruments, and other medical tools. The primary objective is to eliminate any surface irregularities that could harbour bacteria or cause patient discomfort. For instance, mass finishing is vital in the production of orthopaedic implants, where a smooth surface can significantly

reduce the risk of tissue irritation and promote better integration with the body. Additionally, the process is used to clean and finish components of diagnostic equipment, ensuring that they are free of contaminants and safe for patient contact. Shot blasting, in the context of the aerospace industry, is crucial for preparing component surfaces for further processing and ensuring their structural integrity. This process is extensively used for cleaning, texturizing, or peening surfaces of aircraft components made of metals and alloys. By removing surface contaminants, shot blasting enhances the adhesion properties of subsequent coatings, which is critical for parts that are exposed to extreme environmental conditions. Moreover, shot blasting is employed for stress-relieving and strengthening components through peening, a process that improves fatigue resistance and prolongs the lifespan of critical aerospace parts such as turbine blades, landing gear, and fuselage components. The importance of mass finishing and shot blasting in these sectors is underscored by their direct impact on safety and performance of safety-critical devices. In the medical field, the precise and gentle finishing of devices ensures device efficacy. In aerospace, the reliability and durability of components are non-negotiable, with shot blasting playing a pivotal role in ensuring these attributes. These processes not only contribute to the longevity and functionality of components but are also integral in complying with stringent industry standards and regulations, thereby upholding the highest safety benchmarks in these critical sectors.

HOW TO SELECT A FINISHING SUPPLIER To excel in providing top-tier mass finishing and shot blasting technologies, a company must possess a blend of advanced technical capabilities, extensive industry knowledge, and a commitment to innovation. At its core, the company should be equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and technology capable of handling a diverse range of materials and component geometries. This includes having a variety of mass finishing machines like tumblers, vibratory finishers, and centrifugal equipment, as well as an array of shot blasting machines suited for different applications, from gentle peening to aggressive surface cleaning. Equally important is the company’s expertise in selecting the right media, whether it be ceramic, plastic, or metallic for mass finishing, or the appropriate abrasives for shot blasting, to achieve optimal results. In addition, the company should demonstrate an ongoing investment in R&D, ensuring that its technology stays at the forefront of industry advancements, thereby offering the most efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solutions. In addition to technical prowess, the ideal company should have a strong

customer-centric profile, marked by a deep understanding of various industry requirements and a tailored approach to each project. This means not just selling equipment, but partnering with customers to understand their specific needs, whether they are in the aerospace, medical, or any other sector with stringent finishing standards. Such a company would offer comprehensive services, from initial consultation and process development to after-sales support, including maintenance and training. The ability to provide custom solutions and adapt technology to unique challenges is crucial, as is a robust global support network that ensures customers receive timely assistance regardless of their location. By combining cutting-edge technology with personalized, industry-specific service, a company can truly deliver the best in mass finishing and shot blasting technologies, becoming a trusted ally in their clients’ pursuit of excellence.

THE POWER TO SLASH ENERGY COSTS BY UP TO 36% If your rectifier is running at less than 70% efficiency (and many are), you’re wasting energy and inflating your TCO unnecessarily. KraftPowercon explains how you can save money and improve plating quality at the same time.

If it isn’t broken, you may still need to fix it Most production managers are busy people, dealing with all the everyday challenges involved in manufacturing and finishing: productivity, maintenance, cost control, quality. If a piece of equipment is working, it’s unlikely to be a priority on their ‘to do’ list. Understandably, many metal plating businesses are still using older rectifiers that are still going strong. But energy efficiency has not always been the priority that it is now, and many rectifiers operate at only 70-80% efficiency (and bear in mind that output values on older rectifiers aren’t always accurate). Oversized rectifiers mean larger energy bills. And if you’re seeing burns or a milky finish, you know that residual ripple is to blame. Yet, if you could save energy and increase process speed without causing damage, you’d boost productivity, improve output quality and make your business more cost-effective.

The maths is simple, but significant “Not enough companies know how efficient their rectifiers are,” says KraftPowercon’s Niklas Scharrenberg. “Which means there’s a lot of opportunity out there for general metal finishing businesses to become more competitive.” Fortunately, it’s surprisingly quick and easy to find out. All it takes is a 30-minute

34

check for KraftPowercon’s specialists to let you know how efficiently your existing rectifiers are operating, and what the potential is for your business. “Our customers are seeing reduced cost of operation, not just by saving energy, but also by improving product quality through reduced ripple,” says Scharrenberg. “And using modular FlexKraft means having the right-size rectifier solution that they can scale at any time.” One KraftPowercon customer is saving €112,627 savings in energy bills each year, and ripple is down to just 1%. Another FlexKraft user, a hard chrome plater, is saving around €50,000 euros per year in energy costs.

It costs nothing to see what you could save To discover find out how much energy

you could be saving, visit KraftPowercon’s general metal finishing web page, which features an online energy savings calculator (you don’t even need to give your details to use it). There’s also a free white paper on the relationship between current ripple, throwing power and finishing quality, as well as webinar video on cost savings. For a more accurate estimate, you can also request a free rectifier efficiency check, which will show you exactly where and how energy savings could be made. Act now to maximise your savings, and take advantage of surprisingly short lead times from KraftPowercon. Contact us or one of our UK sales partners for more information. BESPOKE ELEPHANT MEMORIAL PRESERVED FOR GENERATIONS North Yorkshire-based artist blacksmith has partnered with a galvanizing firm to preserve a memorial sculpture, ensuring it remains a fitting tribute for the community to visit for many years to come. James Wilkinson was commissioned to create an elephant sculpture by Guildford High School to remember a past pupil, Emily Oliver, that recently passed away. He said: “As an artist, blacksmith and metal fabricator, I’ve created many bespoke sculptures and garden art over the past two decades. However, it was a particular honour to be entrusted to design and fabricate this beautiful and poignant memorial piece, dedicated to a local girl who sadly recently passed away. “Due to Emily’s distinctive initials – ELMO – and her love for elephants, she was

often linked to the famous Elmo the elephant. We decided to immortalise her in this way and create a bespoke elephant with a patchwork construction, using irregular-shaped pieces of 3mm mild steel welded to an armature. Plus, organic elements, including forget-me-nots, oak leaves, and acorns were requested to be incorporated into the creation. “The memorial is due to be located in the school grounds as a space for friends, family and school peers to visit. Being exposed to the elements, however, it was paramount that we enhanced its longevity and so I called upon my trusted partners, Metaltreat Galvanizers. Having worked with them for almost 20 years, I knew they were reliable and professional - with the specialism to cater for the intricate detailing of the piece.” The elephant sculpture was hot dipped into a bath of molten zinc at temperatures around 450C to allow a metallurgic bonding to be created, which protects the steel from rust and corrosion for up to 70 years. Iain McBeath, Commercial Manager at Metaltreat

36

Galvanizers, added: “It’s always a pleasure to work with James – his artwork is truly magnificent and we’re privileged to play a part in preserving it for people to enjoy for generations. This particular project has very important meaning and special sentiment, and so it was vital that we provided the very best quality service to ensure the sculpture remains as beautiful as it is today for many years to come.” Taking just over a month to complete, the finished product, standing at two metres tall, is due to be located within the school grounds, amongst bamboo and grasses to appear to be pushing through the undergrowth. A smaller elephant sculpture was also created and is to be placed in Emily’s parents’ garden. After her diagnosis, Emily raised over £40,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity, and her family and friends are continuing to fundraise for this charity in her honour. Metaltreat Galvanizers is part of Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. CAPITAL INVESTMENT A THREAT OR AN OPPORTUNITY? The intuitive answer is that most enterprises would view a capital investment as an opportunity and that of course is what it should turn out to be if all goes as planned. The opportunity to increase output, reduce unit costs and ensure consistent levels of product quality. These are the primary reasons on which returns on investment are projected and expenditure justified. However, in the background lies a latent threat to the business if the project is not completed and put to work on time and on budget. It is likely that future commitments have been made to supply product to meet key customer demand and if this cannot be properly satisfied the consequences to both the financial and reputational standing of the business can be serious. So potentially there is a lot at stake, on the one hand the bright profitable future envisaged when the decision to invest was made and on the other the potentially serious consequences of the project reality not living up to expectations. In all projects it is worthwhile to carry out the classic

38

SWOT analysis, many will be familiar with this technique when comparing their products with those of their competitors but perhaps not so familiar in this application. At Plating Line Advice, we believe it is also a useful technique when assessing key project decisions and especially when comparing possible suppliers of capital equipment.

What is a SWOT analysis? SWOT is an acronym that stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. A SWOT analysis would be used by project teams during strategic planning to identify what their project is doing well, where it can improve, what are the risks and how it fits in the investment landscape. It can also be applied with great effect at the supplier selection level.

Components of a SWOT analysis Strengths Strengths are an assessment of the project’s or supplier’s attributes that give it an advantage over other alternatives.

Opportunities Opportunities are usually dependent on the success of the project and can range from supplying to new markets, improving quality, cost reduction etc. often driven by unmet customer needs that the business has identified.

it at a disadvantage when compared to alternatives. For example, a weakness that could be a key consideration is a lack of previous experience in the realisation of specialised turnkey projects or weak financial ratings.

Threats Threats are typically factors impacting the project or supplier. These factors can be anything ranging from limitations of available resource to emerging technology. Ultimately, these threats are the obstacles facing the business and what could adversely affect the project outcome.

The benefits of carrying out the SWOT are summarised by the saying “Forewarned is forearmed” which dates back in Britain to at least 1592 and means “prior knowledge of possible dangers or problems gives one a tactical advantage”. The conclusion being, that to ensure the opportunity presented by the decision to invest is realised to its full potential the possible risks should be identified in advance and steps taken to eliminate them or at least mitigate their impact. This philosophy is at the heart of our approach, bringing to bear 45 years’ experience of project realisation with the objective on ensuring “a happy landing every time” for your project.

WHY IS ANTIMICROBIAL PRODUCT PROTECTION IMPORTANT IN HIGH-TOUCH SURFACES? In the post-pandemic landscape, architects, specifiers, and other construction professionals are placing a greater focus on environmental hygiene. Historically, this centred on postmanufacture hygiene measures, like regular hand washing and extensive cleaning routines. Today, a wave of new antimicrobial products is contributing to how we approach the problem offering an added benefit alongside existing hygiene protocols. In this respect, HMG is leading the way. A family-run business with more than 40 years of industry experience, HMG produces innovative antimicrobial powder coatings for varied surfaces. In this article, we examine why built-in antimicrobial product protection is an added benefit to high-touch surfaces and how HMG powder coatings are an additional tool for architects and specifiers working in hygiene-critical environments and public spaces.

Why is antimicrobial product protection important in high-touch surfaces? To help explain why antimicrobial protection in high-touch surfaces is becoming increasingly essential, we will look at several key points. 1. Clean between cleans At the most fundamental level, antimicrobial product protection is beneficial in high-touch areas because it works 24/7. The addition of antimicrobial technology to surfaces complements existing cleaning protocols, reducing the levels of bacteria on a surface around the clock.

42

This ensures surfaces stay clean between cleans and provides antimicrobial product protection that lasts. Antimicrobial technology is not a silver bullet. However, it does play a significant role in improving and maintaining hygiene levels when deployed in conjunction with a regular cleaning routine and traditional hygiene measures. In HMG coatings, antimicrobial protection is achieved with Polygiene BioMaster™ technology. It has been successfully tested on a host of organisms in more than 2,000 applications and utilises silver ion technology to reduce microbial load. In independent testing, Polygiene BioMaster reduces the levels of E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus by up to 99.9% after 24 hours. 2. Microbes impact material performance Antimicrobial product protection is not just concerned with minimising harmful microbes on surfaces. It also contributes to improved material performance. Microorganisms can cause significant damage and premature degradation, affecting a material’s performance and shortening its lifespan.

Biodeterioration - the destruction or degradation of materials by biological agents - is an issue for many manufacturers and construction professionals. Clients value long-lasting, high-performance products and manufacturers’ reputations depend on being able to provide them. Integrating antimicrobial technology into materials enables manufacturers to distinguish themselves, illustrate their commitment to innovation, and build and maintain long-term relationships with customers. For instance, microbial degradation of metallic surfaces is a significant concern in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry, as ductwork is particularly prone to problems. Ductwork panels and components treated with HMG coatings benefit from integrated antimicrobial product protection that inhibits the growth of microorganisms, guaranteeing protection between cleans. 3. Targeted hygiene is the way forward Integrated antimicrobial protection in metal surfaces is critical because we now need to pursue a strategy of targeted hygiene. Targeted hygiene involves focusing our hygiene practices on places and at times when harmful microbes are most likely to cause concern. Targeted hygiene recognises that microbes are concentrated in certain environments. Consequently, reducing opportunities for microbial growth on these surfaces contributes to a more hygienic environment. HMG powder coatings facilitate targeted hygiene by embedding antimicrobial product protection into these surfaces

and products, reducing the opportunity for microbial growth and making decisive interventions where they have the biggest effect. As a result, the targeted hygiene approach is a more effective, affordable, and sustainable use of resources, working in conjunction with and complementing existing protocols. 4. Architects, specifiers and building materials For architects and specifiers, opting for integrated antimicrobial product protection is becoming increasingly commonplace. The basic materials used to construct buildings and infrastructure often benefit from the addition of antimicrobial technology. From heating and air conditioning ductwork to handrails and public transport upholstery, there is an almost endless array of fascinating use cases. Antimicrobial surfaces can be used in a wide range of surfaces and environments, such as public transport, kitchens, healthcare settings, changing rooms, bathrooms and retail environments.

While high-touch, high-traffic areas represent the clearest and most compelling opportunities to utilise the technology, they are by no means the only ones. Built-in antimicrobial technology is already being integrated into many surfaces within homes. Whether it is kitchen work surfaces, the paint we use to decorate our homes or bathroom appliances, homeowners understand the benefits of advanced antimicrobial protection and demand its inclusion in their properties. In other words, built-in antimicrobial product protection can become a defining feature of our everyday lives, reducing opportunities for microbial growth on surfaces.

HMG Powder Coatings At HMG, we develop and sell advanced antimicrobial powder coatings that can be applied to various fixtures and fittings, including window frames, door handles and push plates. We specialise in innovative solutions that meet the needs

of architects and specifiers. For instance, we offer a corrosion protection coating system for steel substrates and a series of lower curing temperature powder coatings that deliver significant energy savings. HMG powder coatings feature Polygiene BioMaster silver ion technology. Silver ion protection works on three fronts to minimise the growth of bacteria. First, it binds with the bacterial cell wall to impede growth. Second, it restricts enzyme production, affecting energy production within the cell. Finally, it interferes with the cell’s DNA to impair reproduction. This three-pronged approach has proven highly effective in tackling many of the most common bacterial strains. With more than 40 years of experience in the industrial coatings sector, HMG has established itself as an industry leader and leverages its expertise to continue developing innovative and effective powder coating solutions. Designed for removing high-melting-point soils such as waxes, pitches, greases, fixturing compounds, and buffing compounds. Ideal for applications where elevated temperatures aid in soil removal.

Encapsulant/Filler used extensively in the Aerospace Sector, and more recently in Formula 1 where it is used as a Filler applied to Aluminium Honeycomb Core to enable the milling of complex profiles during the fabrication of the Monocoque As a Thermoplastic Rigidax is notoriously difficult if not impossible to clean off using conventional Solvents. However we were introduced to Samsol DeWax just a few years ago when we were invited by Banner Chemicals to trial this new chemistry. The method is immersion at 90c and without exaggeration the initial results were spectacular. We placed the waxed part into the tank and for a couple of minutes nothing happened, but after two minutes the wax was releasing from the part with Samsol DeWax clearly absorbing the wax, and with 4-5 minutes the part was clearly free of the wax and completely clean. We were so impressed with the results and particularly the ease with which the part was cleaned. After some years we remain as impressed as do my customers who in the past had struggled somewhat to achieve the cleanliness required in Aerospace. Samsol DeWax is the only Solvent to thoroughly and completely remove any type of wax effortlessly. Not only that but Samsol DeWax has a Soil Loading of approximately 40% making it so cost effective, it is also Non Hazardous. Thank you Banner Chemicals for formulating a truly very efficient wax remover that i can confidently recommend to my customers as “Simply the Best”. Peter - International Waxes

Ecoclean: Solutions as diverse as the tasks in industrial parts cleaning

EFFICIENT, INNOVATIVE, AND SUSTAINABLE COMPONENT CLEANING FOR THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION CHAIN Whether degreasing, classic component cleaning or high-purity applications - the demands on cleaning solutions have increased in all areas of the manufacturing industry. Ecoclean is responding to these changed market requirements with an even broader and more modularized product range. The focus here is on higher cleaning quality, improved costs, and more energyefficient processes. Component cleaning is an essential manufacturing step in all industrial sectors to ensure requirement-compliant downstream processes and high, stable

product quality. Regardless of the industry, new and modified products, increasingly compact and complex geometries, an ever-greater variety of materials, and workpiece dimensions ranging from one millimeter or less to several meters all contribute to the fact that the spectrum of required cleaning applications is more diverse today than ever before. The demands on the process and the cleanliness to be achieved vary depending on the production stage as well as on the product and industry. For example, in the final cleaning of high-tech components, including those for the semiconductor industry, medical, sensor and analysis technology, and precision optics, particulate contamination in the nanometer range and nanolayers of residual film contamination must be removed. In contrast, in general industry, for example, with its very different areas and components, the first task is often to

52

clean off large quantities of chips and machining media. Frequently, factors such as high throughput requirements, heavy workpieces, a widely varying range of components and short delivery times also play a role. In addition, cleaning must in any case be economical, energy-efficient, and resource-efficient.

Adapt cleaning solution to the task To optimally adapt a cleaning solution to the task at hand, other product and company-specific criteria must be considered in addition to the cleanliness specifications to be met. This requires a manufacturer whose product range offers corresponding flexibility in terms of the cleaning media to be used as well as the plant and process technologies. As a full-range supplier of future-oriented, flexible, and energy-efficient solutions for industrial component cleaning, Ecoclean and UCM, the Group’s division specializing in precision and ultra-fine cleaning, cover the entire spectrum of wet-chemical processes using waterbased media, solvents and modified alcohols. This means that cleaning processes and systems, including the most suitable process and drying technologies for both batch and individual part cleaning, can be very efficiently tailored to product- and company-specific requirements. Process design is carried out in the company’s own test centers, with cleanroom test centers with adapted plant and measuring technology available for tasks in medical technology and for highpurity applications.

Special plants for water-based cleaning are covered by the modular EcoCvela with working chamber diameters up to 1,500 mm as well as several flood tanks and, if required, several working chambers.

Modular system makes special chamber systems available more quickly With a broad range of standardized chamber systems for cleaning with water-based media, solvents, and modified alcohols, as well as a wide variety of process technologies such as spray and high-pressure cleaning, ultrasonics, injection flood washing (IFW), vapor degreasing, Ultrasonic Plus, Pulsated Pressure Cleaning (PPC) and plasma cleaning, Ecoclean covers most cleaning tasks in general industry as well as the automotive and supplier sectors. However, applications that required individually designed special equipment, for example due to component dimensions, throughput requirements, cleanliness specifications or other companyspecific factors, have increased significantly in recent years. To reduce the design effort required for this and shorten delivery times, the plant manufacturer has developed the innovative modular systems EcoCvela for water-based

The modular EcoCstretch concept was developed for solvent cleaning applications that previously required special equipment with complex design and long production times. Among other things, it includes four working chamber sizes and several flood tanks.

cleaning and EcoCstretch for cleaning with solvents or modified alcohol. For the solvent systems, the modular concept includes four working chamber sizes with diameters from 750 to 1,200 mm and equipment with several flood tanks. For individual cleaning processes, the systems can be equipped with all process technologies available for solvent cleaning. With the EcoCvela, the diameters of the modular working chambers vary from 650 to 1,500 mm. In addition, the plants can be equipped with several working chambers and flood tanks. In these highly flexible plants, various process technologies and systems for efficient heat recovery also ensure short process times and energysaving operation. For very high cleanliness requirements, both plant types can also be supplied with the corresponding high-purity equipment.

Modular solutions also for multi-bath ultrasonic cleaning In the area of multi-bath ultrasonic cleaning systems, solutions consisting of standardized modules are also offered in the form of the UCMBaseLine, UCMSmartLine, UCMPerformanceLine and UCMHighLine model series. With the modules for the process steps cleaning, rinsing, PPC, drying, loading, and unloading, as well as a flexible transport system, cleaning systems for a wide range of applications can be configured and commissioned cost-effectively and easily. This is also supported by the fact that the electrical and control technology is already integrated. For high-purity applications, the systems are designed with the appropriate equipment and for operation in or connection to a cleanroom. With its further diversified portfolio, Ecoclean enables companies from all industrial sectors to meet changing cleaning requirements not only in an economical and stable manner, but also in a resource-saving and future-oriented way. www.ecoclean-group.net

For energy-efficient and fast cleaning processes, the plants have effective heat recovery and can be equipped with different process technologies.

quattroClean snow jet technology - scalable, inline-capable and cleanroom-compatible

DRY CLEANING PROCESS FOR OPTIMUM CLEANING RESULTS IN ELECTRONICS PRODUCTION Whether energy, mobility or industry - electronic components and systems play a key role in the transformation towards climate neutrality. Due to higher demands on power density and reliability as well as new solutions, the requirements for technical cleanliness during the production of these components have increased enormously. The scalable, cleanroom-compatible and inline-capable quattroClean snow jet technology is a dry, reliable and sustainable means of meeting these requirements for a wide range of cleaning applications.

Technical cleanliness has a decisive impact on the performance, functionality, reliability and service life of electronic components and systems, from semiconductor & microsystem products, PCB joining & assembly technologies to the manufacture of battery cells & modules and the production of photovoltaics & laser-structured organic electronics. The benchmark is the level of cleanliness defined as necessary for the downstream processes or end application, which must be achieved in a consistent and reproducible manner. To ensure compliance with the sometimes extremely high limits regarding particulate, filmic-organic and inorganic residual contamination, cleaning is usually carried out in a cleanroom. In a design adapted to the respective cleanroom class, the quattroClean snow jet technology from acp systems has established itself as a solution for such high-purity tasks.

SCC 1 and highest filmic cleanliness levels demonstrably achieved The technology concerns a dry process which is used for full-surface or selective parts cleaning. The cleaning medium is

54

liquid carbon dioxide recycled from chemical production processes and the generation of energy from biomass. The carbon dioxide is guided through a wear-free, two-substance ring nozzle and expands on exiting to form fine snow crystals. These are bundled by a separate jacket jet of compressed air and accelerated to supersonic speed. When the easily-focused jet of snow and compressed air impacts on the surface to be cleaned, a combination of thermal, mechanical, solvent and sublimation effects occur, which is the basis of the cleaning action. The crystalline carbon dioxide sublimates completely during the process, leaving the treated surfaces completely dry. The detached contaminants are then extracted together with the process gas, thus preventing re-contamination of the parts or contamination of the surroundings. Time-consuming and energy-intensive rinsing and drying processes are no longer necessary. Extensive tests have shown that the quattroClean snow jet technology consistently meets the requirements of surface cleanliness class (SCC) 1

according to VDI 2083, Sheet 9.1:2006 with regard to residual particulate contamination. In addition, particulate cleanliness corresponding to SCC 0.1 can be achieved with repeat accuracy for components that have been cleaned beforehand in an ultra-fine wet-chemical process. In the case of film residues, cleaning results are comparable to those of other ultra-fine cleaning processes such as wet chemical and plasma cleaning or vacuum bake-out.

Sustainable cleaning with Green Screen certified medium In combination with process gas from Linde, the effective quattroClean process has been awarded the Green Screen Certificate for Cleaners & Degreasers from Clean Production Action. The independent, non-profit organization has thus created a benchmark specifically for cleaning media that are used as process chemicals in manufacturing, especially in the electronics industry. The certificate confirms that the process gas does not contain any chemical substances which are harmful to humans or the environment.

Cleanroom-compatible cleaning solutions for every application To optimally tailor the cleaning solution to the respective requirements and production situation, acp systems offers

56

a range of machines based on standardized modules as well as individually planned systems. The design and features of the solutions, which are made entirely of stainless steel, are adapted to the cleanroom class concerned. This ensures a cleanliness of 99.995 percent for the liquid carbon dioxide when it is prepared and a quality of 1.2.1. according to ISO 8573-1:2010 for the compressed air. If necessary, a gas scrubber can be integrated into the ultra-clean compressed air supply (XCDA) to filter out any traces of organic substances. The quality of the air generated meets semiconductor production requirements, for instance. One of the solutions offered by acp systems is the compact JetCell with rotating nozzles, which will be on show at this year’s Productronica. The flexible plug & play cleaning cell was developed for automated cleaning applications and is easily integrated into an interlinked manufacturing environment, e.g. immediately downstream of a punching or injection molding machine. Alternatively, it can be operated as a stand-alone solution. It boasts a high cleaning performance with an extremely low media consumption. During surface cleaning, which can be performed simultaneously from above and below, seamless process monitoring & control ensure that each part is treated with the previously validated process parameters. Integrated interfaces enable the digitally-

controllable cleaning system to be connected to a higher-level host computer.

Cleanroom test facility for process design and validation acp systems has its own cleanroom test facility for process design. This allows cleaning tests to be carried out in a validated ISO Class 7 cleanroom with zones up to Class 5 according to ISO 14644-1. All process parameters, such as the volume flows for compressed air and carbon dioxide, the number of nozzles, the area to be cleaned and the duration of the jet, are precisely tailored to the respective application, while also taking the material properties, type of contamination and required level of cleanliness into account. The values determined can be stored as partspecific cleaning programs in the system’s control unit. Thanks to the dry quattroClean snow jet technology, a cleaning solution is available that can be used to perform a wide range of cleaning tasks in the electronics industry reliably and efficiently. The process not only ensures the required cleanliness of electronic, mechanical, optical and sensor components but also saves energy and resources at the same time. VOLLMER INTRODUCES GROUNDBREAKING ULTRASONIC DEBURRING SYSTEM Now available from Vollmer UK is the exciting new ultraTEC ultrasonic A25 deburring machine. As part of the Vollmer Group, ultraTEC is a company that has won a number of awards for its patented new ultrasonic deburring method that only uses water. Without the use of chemicals, the ultraTEC deburring system has already applauded as a validatable process in a variety of industry sectors. Only formed in 2019, ultraTEC has taken the industry by storm with its unique technology that utilises an ultrasonic horn that oscillates to generate sound waves as well as cavitation to clean and deburr external and internal edges with complete process reliability. The environmentally friendly solution provides sharp edged burrfree parts that often cannot be processed via alternate methods. This energy efficient system eliminates common challenges when deburring parts such as deformation, discoloring and changes to the oxide layer on the component. It is also performs on small and delicate components that cannot be processed via alternative methods. This makes the ultraTEC ultrasonic A25 perfect for applications in heavily regulated sectors with challenging demands such as the medical, food and drug industries, aerospace, electronics and many more.

How it works The ultraTEC ultrasonic A25 creates a formation and dissolution/implosion of bubbles in water that release an intense

energy during implosion. This is created by an ultra high oscillation of 20kHz (20,000 oscillations a second) with an oscilation width of +/-80-120microns, which far exceeds the amplitude of ultrasonic cleaning, cutting and welding technologies. An ultrasonic horn that is fully submersed in water is set into resonant vibration via mechanical oscilations to transmit the extremely high forces into the water tank. With horn diameters from 1.2 to 14mm, the ultrasonic horn is fixed in a position in the water tank and components are robotically moved around the ultrasonic horn that creates a cavitation jet from 250 to 270m/s that breaks burrs from the parts. The ultraTEC ultrasonic A25 is configured with an ultrasonic stainless steel 40 litre basin that can accommodate parts up to 150 by 150 by 150mm and weighing up to 1.5kg. In the basin are two opposing ultrasonic horns to cater for a variety of applications and once processed, parts are moved to a compressed air drying station. Components are collected from an external pallet by a 6-axis ABB industrial robot that is programmed via an application integrated into the ABB RobotStudio suite – a CAM system for ultrasonic deburring. The ultraTEC ultrasonic A25 is a completely flexible system with a multitude of options such as conveyor loading and different component tray configurations. Additional options include various waterproof gripping systems for part picking, a selection of motor and air pressure spindles for additional

68

processes like brushing and re-gripping stations to turn components around for gripping from the opposite side. For further information on this exciting new technology, please contact Vollmer UK. Telephone: +44 (0)115 9491040 Visit: www.vollmer-group.com
