LET’S LEARN - WITH MR FIX IT Here at Mr Fix It Wholesale, engraving is our passion. And we want to share that passion with you. Our inhouse engraving team has over 20 years of engraving expertise using C02 lasers, Fibre lasers and Rotary engraving technologies. It gives us great pleasure to share that knowledge and passion with you. The product being engraved is a Matt Mint Green Double Wall Thermos 500ml Bottle supplied by MFI Wholesale. The beautiful painted matt finish on these bottles makes them perfect to engrave using a C02 laser engraving machine. The C02 laser source strips the paint on the intended engraving area with precision to expose the base metal of the bottle, creating a lovely two-toned contrast. We are using a Gravotech WeLase Galvo C02+ Engraving Station for this engraving job. The galvo laser source gives a quick, precise strike on the bottle with every job. Coupled with the easy-to-use and highly creative Gravotech software Laserstyle 9, the process is very simple start to finish.

1). Load the bottle into your WeLase C02+. We have created a small jig by cutting black Perspex to allow the bottle to be held securely in position inside the WeLase. 2). Next, we want to find the depth position for the bottle to ensure that the laser gives a clean strike on the bottle. In the WeLase, we do this by lowering or raising the table. The WeLase has a smart design using two laser pointers that join as one solid dot when the Z-axis is at 0 or the strike point of the product. For example, if you have a flat plate with a thickness of 1.6mm that you would like to engrave, then you can simply lower the table -1.6mm to ensure the laser catches the plate accurately. The laser pointers will be one solid dot at this point which is another indicator you have moved the plate down and into the correct position. 3). When engraving cylindrical items without a rotation device, we must engrave ‘out of focus’. This means throwing the Z-axis out slightly to make sure you catch your engraving area end to end on the curved surface. Using our bottle and jig as an example, the actual strike point at the highest point of the curve is -119.4mm (Image with red light pointer as a full dot on bottle - Figure One). We then lift the table to -115mm which will break our dot into two smaller dots but now allows us to catch the engrave further around the surface of the bottle (Figure Two).

The speed and power settings on the Gravotech software for this engraving job is: Power: 100 Speed: 2000 DPI: 600 No. of Passes: 1 This gives a run time of approximately 17 seconds for the text you see in the image. These personalised Matt Coloured Double Wall Thermos 500ml Bottles are a great seller for personalised gift shops on online retail. You are guaranteed to see a bottle like these at least once a day between your colleagues in the office, individuals in the gym or the cup holder of a car. We suggest marketing these in a bespoke fashion. ‘Any Text’ bottles take up most of the online market share and can be hard to compete with. So, doing something outside the box is a great way to be recognised e.g. ‘Joe Bloggs Gym Bottle’ with a dumbbell image or similar as a standard template can appeal to a massive exercise focused audience but still personalised enough to make it individualistic. If you wanted to go the corporate route, you could reach out to PTs or Fitness Instructors in your local area that offer PT packages that could include a personalised bottle with their logo and clients name on it. This can generate brand awareness for them and sales for you. The classic win-win situation!

This unique feature dramatically increases the print speed and reducing what is already a very low cost per transfer. How to Produce Top Quality Embroidery Producing quality embroidery will set you apart from many of the embroiderers out there that only turn out average quality. Take a look at embroidery in some of the retail stores and you will see a wide difference in quality. You could say that if the consumer is accepting this, then why bother changing? The answer is that most people will always pay extra for quality goods. This will allow you to create more business and charge a higher price. So, let’s take a look at how you can ensure that your embroidery production is as good as possible.

Look at the design before it’s digitised The first step starts when you take the initial order. You must look at the artwork and decide what parts are suitable for embroidery and what are not. For example, very small lettering may not be possible compared to print. If you have your own design software, there should be special lettering fonts that are suitable for very small ones. If you are looking at a design with large areas of fill stitch, you might want to consider using an applique material that will cut down on the number of stitches and the time taken to sew. If you are sending your designs out to be digitised, they should advise you on what’s good for embroidery or not if you are not sure. To find a good digitiser, try sending the same design to say three companies and then compare the results.

Maintain your machine

The backing material is also very important and is used as a stabilizer for the garment. There are two main types of backing, one is called “tear away” and the other “cut away”. Tear away backing is used for more stable fabrics and cut away for the more unstable fabrics such as knits or loosely woven fabrics. There are also some special backing materials that are mainly used for lighter weight fabrics. Please ask your supplier for more details. Keiyosa love imagining new designs and making them come to life In a recent interview with Keiyosa we spoke to Vipul Patel who, with his partner Shivani Nana, love imagining new designs and making them come to life. From the homeware to the stationery they create a variety of gifts and take nature as their inspiration. “We aim to bring this connection to you through the beautiful natural materials we use to make each individual piece”, said VP. Beginning in 2013 and located in the heart of England where they design and hand-make all their products, they are proud to say that their customer base stretches across the globe. The Keiyosa ethos is to contribute positively to the environment. All of the materials used, therefore, are consciously sourced from sustainable, responsible vendors. The wood used often comes from trees naturally felled in the UK and all of the packaging is environmentally friendly. They even use their wafer-thin wood shavings to help package pieces they make!

Vipul began by making carbon fibre parts for cars and so initially bought a woodworking machine. This then expanded into gift boxes and suddenly commissions started to roll in. As things steadily grew Vipul was approached by a family member who was interested in calligraphy and wanted a drying rack. Vipul created this from scratch and through the popularity of this product, created the transition into bespoke calligraphy and desk stationery. In addition, by maximising social media channels their website and the ecommerce platform Etsy, this has continued to grow at a vast rate. Keiyosa will now be expanding its products and its use of acrylic. “Cutting acrylic on a CNC can be challenging and it’s so much quicker and cleaner to do it on the laser. Incorporating plastics into products, which we can now achieve using the laser, has solved the problem of wood drying out in certain climates. With the laser we can use an acrylic inset cut out with the laser whilst also adding colour and aesthetics to the pieces. The laser has enabled Keiyosa to produce prototyping at a fraction of the cost and time. The laser negates the need for jigs to be made to enable shapes to be cut out accurately. The laser has opened up a world of possibilities and has made a big difference to the way we will be able to work going forward” commented VP.

The WidLaser C500 - the smallest in the WidLaser range - has an engraving area of 500mm x 700mm with variable cutting speeds of up to 90,000mm/min on the C500 model. WHAT GRINDS MY GEARS Products, Products & Even More Products! I’ve often wondered just how many different designed trophy products there must be in this world. Anyone outside of our trade, or that has never purchased a trophy before, are often fooled into thinking there are about 5 products, a medal, cup, football resin, shield, and a plastic riser. How wrong could they be!

There must be 300+ different dedicated football trophies to choose from within the UK if you gathered up the options from the main wholesalers, most of which are just a repetition of the same style and theme. This is then replicated across all the different sports and into other generic products like centre holder medals. This mass of different product is great for the customers but is it really needed? Does a football club need the choice of 50 different styles? It’s fantastic to have new products, and for clubs in any sport, to have new choices each year, yet are offered enough for them to choose a new product for the next 50 years! And in my opinion, this is the root cause of lots of issues, outlined in the steps below…. 1. The customer comes to order a handful of medals and trophies 2. I show them catalogues of my two main suppliers and give some recommendations of the most popular styles 3. The minds are blown by the vast amount of choices 4. This huge choice results in a lengthy discussion about which options to choose

8. Begin step 2 again with showing the customer all the choices again. There are just too many choices! If there was only a fraction of the number of different products on offer, surely wholesalers would be able to stock larger volumes of them rather than a small amount of stock spread over a vast range. In turn retailers would have an easier time with showing the different products but with the added hope of not having to deal with stock issues. I think it’s all too easy when looking at trophies every day, to feel the desperate need to have new products as it can all feel mundane, but does the customer feel that way! Wholesalers and retailers alike really need to think about what the customers need. If we imagine a customer, perhaps making a one-off purchase or a club ordering their annual awards, I doubt they even notice new products or want to look through 200+ pages, or desperate to see what a new catalogue might have to offer. In most cases, a quality product, that’s in stock, supplied with a great service and personalisation is everything a customer is looking for. Will we eventually see a smaller range of products in the trade, I highly doubt it, but only time will tell!

5. A decision is made on which product they would like to order 6. The order is placed with the supplier 7. The item is out of stock, or the stock is too low.
