We convey our heartfelt gratitude for your support throughout this extraordinary year at Hillel. Your dedication to the students we serve has been critical and truly inspiring, and we are deeply grateful for your continued partnership and generosity. Throughout this Impact Report, you will see many examples of the fruits of your generosity.
This past year, our Hillel Staff and Board of Directors worked tirelessly to create meaningful experiences and opportunities for our Hillel student community, including advocacy to ensure that the regional academic institutions provide them a safe and supportive environment in these turbulent times. We continue to expand by opening our doors to more students and offering more activities and events.
We would like to call out some transformative opportunities that have arisen this past year. Through the hard work and dedication of the Hillel Staff and Board, we have succeeded in developing a number of exciting initiatives. It is with great enthusiasm that we share the news of being awarded a Strategic Growth Grant and a Springboard Fellow Grant from Hillel International.
These grants will enable us to expand our team and reach more students and provide more events and activities, allowing us to further enrich student lives and strengthen and expand our community. Your support has played a vital role in our success, and we cannot thank you enough for your commitment to ensuring that we continue to expand our support of our Hillel community. By investing in our students, you are helping us cultivate future leaders who will go on to enrich the lives of Jewish people and the world at large. Together, we are creating a brighter future for our students, and we are truly grateful to have you as partners in this important endeavor.
Once again, thank you for your ongoing support and for being a valued donor to Hillel at Davis and Sacramento. We look forward to sharing more achievements and successes with you in the years to come.

When I first came to Davis, my family told me about Hillel and suggested that I check it out, and I am so glad that I did! The first event that I went to was a Russian cooking night on a Thursday, and I remember how fun it was to meet other Jewish students, make food, and practice my Russian. My parents are immigrants from the USSR, so going to all of these Russian cultural events hit close to home. Everyone I met was very warm and welcoming, and it encouraged me to come back for more events at Hillel.
I went on a couple of coffee dates with the Hillel interns to learn more. I really appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and hear about the different ways to become involved. I also started attending the weekly Shabbat dinners and Tuesday dinners where I met many of my closest friends. I feel incredibly lucky to have met them at Hillel and am grateful that even when the quarter gets hectic, I can always count on Tuesday and Friday nights for an opportunity to eat dinner at Hillel with my friends and catch up and relax. The themes of every Shabbat are always a lot of fun and a great way to learn new things! I also appreciate the study hours and snacks at Hillel, as I often come to Hillel to study or take a break and play ping pong or billiards with my friends.
In addition to spending time at Hillel, I also appreciate the events that Hillel has hosted outside of Davis. For example, I went on outdoor trips with Hillel, and had an amazing time rock climbing and hiking! This summer I joined Hillel for the Birthright trip, which was an incredible experience. It was my first time in Israel, and it was very exciting to learn about Israel and explore the country with my friends from Hillel.
Overall, I am very grateful for all the opportunities and experiences that Hillel has provided. Through Hillel I met many close friends and found a strong Jewish community on campus, which has significantly improved my college experience. Hillel has allowed me to experience many things that I otherwise wouldn’t have, such as rock climbing and going to Israel, and I really appreciate Hillel for organizing these activities. The Jewish community that Hillel has created has made me feel more at home in Davis, and I’m thankful for the dinners, holidays, and regular afternoons that I can spend with the wonderful Jewish community at Hillel.
Hillel has been a cornerstone of my college experience at Davis, and I cannot imagine the person I would be without it. Since starting at Davis in the fall of 2021, I have been a regular attendee at Hillel, primarily joining for Shabbat dinners. These initial experiences opened my eyes to the interconnectedness within the Jewish community at Davis.
I reconnected with one of my oldest friends, whom I hadn't seen in years, and we continue to attend Hillel and spend quality time together. The Hillel community has provided me with comfort and friendship. Toward the end of the 2021-2022 school year, I was uncertain about my future housing and had no one to turn to. Luckily, I met one of my current roommates because we both went to Shabbat every Friday and shared a class. I feel incredibly fortunate to have him as both a roommate and a friend.
I met the majority of my friends at Davis through Hillel, and without them, I would not be the person I am today. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have a tight-knit Jewish community at college that I can rely on, even amidst the relentless papers and exams. My friends within the Jewish community at Davis have inspired me to become more actively involved in Jewish organizations on campus, such as Aggies for Israel. Hillel, along with its vibrant community, helps me maintain a strong connection to my Jewish identity through a variety of events held throughout the year. I always look forward to the themed Shabbat dinners each week, the Matzah Ball, and the diverse and engaging activities. Hillel has shaped me into the person I am today, and I am forever grateful for the profound impact of the Jewish community I have found during my college years.
During winter quarter of my first year of college, I went to a Hillel Shabbat with one of my orientation friends. Earlier in the year I had disclosed my Jewish heritage to her. And after discovering it was a heritage we shared, my friend suggested that we go to Hillel together sometime. I had no idea what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect Hillel to become a home away from home. When I was younger, I lived in a town that didn’t really have a Jewish community. I didn’t have many Jewish friends or role models, and I didn’t feel connected to my heritage. So after my Bat Mitzvah, I stopped attending synagogue- two towns overand attempted to cast my Jewish identity aside. Surprisingly, in winter quarter of my first year of college, I felt connected to my Jewish community again after attending Hillel. I loved it. Everyone was super welcoming. Over the last couple years, Hillel has been many things to me. It has helped me find community, it has enabled me to explore my Jewish heritage and identity, and it has served as a place for my own growth. I have met some of my best friends at Hillel, and have enjoyed every Shabbat dinner, havdalah, and special event that I have had the privilege of attending. During spring quarter of my first year of college, I joined the Hillel Student Board. I wanted to be more involved, and as the vice president of engagement, I got to plan a ton of fun events for Hillel’s student population. Among other events, I organized a Hanukkah party, Purim party, Pride party, and Lag B'omer party. I also hosted Hillel’s first ever Matzah Ball: a spring formal that has since become a much loved tradition. This past summer, I visited Israel as part of Hillel’s birthright program. Visiting Israel with Hillel made the trip even more special and allowed me to have a greater appreciation for the Jewish community I have in Davis. Some of my highlights from the trip were exploring Tzfat, seeing the Western Wall, rafting on the Jordan river, and petting all of the street cats. I also appreciated that the trip gave me an opportunity to get closer to some of the friends I'd met back in Davis.
I can't wait to expand my involvement with Hillel this upcoming year as Hillel’s Tzedek intern. Through the role, I hope to share my love of animals with Hillel’s students as I plan to host events focusing on animal welfare. Throughout my time at Hillel, I've met many great people, strengthened my leadership skills, and began to feel more comfortable in my Jewish identity. For the first time, my Judaism gave me community.
I grew up in San Francisco in a Russian-Jewish family. Both my parents are from Moscow. I wouldn’t really say that I was raised Jewish growing up. We celebrated the standard holidays like Hanukkah and Rosh Hashanah, but that’s around where it stopped. I also went to Jewish summer camp, specifically Camp Tawonga in beautiful Yosemite National Park, and then I volunteered with Jewish Family and Children's Services where I explored my Jewish heritage more.
Everything changed when my sister went to Davis before me and was very active in Hillel. She was an intern and also president of the student board. Once I decided that I was going to Davis, she insisted that I at least go to a couple Hillel events, and it definitely paid off.
I thought that I may not have been Jewish enough to join Hillel, but after hearing my sister's story I decided to give it a try. Although I wasn’t going to services, I found my niche in the kitchen helping cook Tuesday Dinners and Shabbat meals. I found a great group of people that I was able to connect with and made great friendships while still having the feeling of being a part of a big family. I always find myself going to Hillel to study as the environment there feels very homey; although, that never lasts too long once you start getting distracted by friends.
Over my two years with Hillel so far, I’ve been able to grow as an individual and also find what being Jewish means to me. Going on Birthright with my friends was such an amazing experience as well. Having received so much from Hillel, I try to help out and give back as much as I can. I now lead, along with two friends, outdoor adventures such as rafting, rock climbing, and hiking with a Jewish learning aspect to further enhance the impact Hillel has on students. I can't imagine going to Davis without Hillel.
"My favorite part of Birthright was going to Mahane Yehuda market at night. I've only been at day with my parents, and it's so cool seeing how it transforms at night. I had such a great time with my friends."
"My favorite activity of birthright was rafting on the Jordan River, but my favorite part of birthright was spending time in an amazing country with such amazing people!"
-Leila Adatto, '24"Birthright inspired me to become even more involved with my Jewish community than I already am. My favorite activity was the night out in Tel Aviv where we went to a dance club and the beach."
-Evan Feldman, '26"My favorite activity on the winter trip was going to go off and explore the areas we were in. It was a great way to see the lives and cultures of the people in Israel and it allowed me to get close with my friends on the trip."

Read about her experience becoming a Bat Mitzvah
May 6, 2023
My name is Jillian McKie, and I was called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 6, 2023 at Congregation Bet Haverim in Davis. If there’s anything that I’ve learned from having a bat mitzvah at age 20 while I was a full-time student, it’s that only a challenge brings you true satisfaction.
I approached the Hillel staff about having a bat mitzvah. I didn’t have a bat mitzvah at age 13 nor did I ever think that I would embark on this journey of self-discovery when I was applying to college. Hillel seemed like the perfect place to change all that. The staff was incredibly supportive and had all of the knowledge and resources I needed to make the dream a reality. Going into this process, I knew very little, and I could not have done it without Hillel. The staff connected me with the local synagogue in Davis where I had the ceremony.
The strenuous demands of being a full-time student made the process of becoming a bat mitzvah even more difficult. It took a lot of effort to manage everything, but the abundance of encouragement and support from the staff, friends, my family, and many community members active in Hillel kept me motivated until the end.
