COMMODORE’S REPORT

Most will be aware that Hillarys Yacht Club has a Strategic Plan. This covers the 2013/2023 period and is meant to be an active, living document. It has served us well and by adhering to our plan we have seen many worthwhile benefits accrue to the Club. The second-storey additions to the Club are stand-out examples, but there are many, perhaps less spectacular, which are delivering benefits to us.

These examples include - a review of the Constitution; the acquisition of the fuel facility; development of a Club History working group; installation of a jetty alarm system; development of a schools training program; the boardwalk and VIP jetty installation; a major revamp of Q jetty; the boat racking structure; a junior clubhouse facility and we have undertaken a valuable club member survey. A children’s playground has been on the agenda for some time and we can expect to see action on this very soon.

Other strategies, less visible to members, include the adoption of an asset replacement plan and the installation of integrated electronic operating systems to ensure efficient operation of Club business. While less tangible these administration strategies underpin the continued viability of our Club and continue to assist us to deliver value for money for members.

It is time to once again review the Strategic Plan. One matter that has been brought forward is the potential to complete a review of the composition and structure to the Club Sections.

Our present sectional structure follows the traditional marine activities of the Club. The aim of a review is to explore the potential for representation on the Club Management Committee which reflects a more equitable cross-section of Club membership. To some extent this arises out of the Membership Survey where it was clearly noted that many of

our members of today are joining solely to enjoy the social amenities of the Club.

I have mentioned that our overall guiding strategy is the delivery of value for money for HYC members. In this respect we are like any “business” in that our primary role is to maximise benefits to our members - or “shareholders”. However, the “business” analogy falls short on many counts, not the least being that we are by law a “not for profit” organisation. As a “club” we are entitled to tax and other considerations which are not available to a “business” in the accepted sense of the term. Further we do not seek to maximise profits by charging a competitive price for goods and services based on what the market will bear.

By paying a fee to join HYC a member (shareholder) expects to receive a benefit from the Club. This is – for most – good bar and restaurant service at reasonable prices and other amenities (such as marina pens) at an affordable, but cost efficient, price. It is this last point – cost efficiency – which is the important one and here we seek to adopt the mantle of a “business” through efficient cost control, awareness and management of liabilities and planned reduction of debt.

One aspect of our operations where we operate strictly as a business is the provision of a function service to the wider community. Like the fuel and lifting operations, we do this for the sole purpose of subsidising the delivery of our basic services to our members.

In other words HYC is a club which we seek to manage in a business-like way.

Our Annual General Meeting will take place before the next edition of Compass. It will be my last as a Flag Officer and I’m grateful for the experience over the years at various levels of Club operations. In my view Hillarys is a well managed club and it has been a privilege to be part of the team and to witness the growth we continue to enjoy. Of course we must always have an eye on improvement. We are lucky to have a membership which covers a wide cross-section of the community – with the experience and skill to identify and suggest constructive ideas which will foster this improvement. Good luck and long may you enjoy HYC.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

STEAMING AHEAD Activity in, on water and around the Club has continued positively. The end of our financial year has seen an improved result for the Club as a whole, being above the previous year and a positive outcome as we move forward.

As detailed previously, we are about to commence improvements to the Members Restaurant & Bar, Wet Bar and BBQ areas and the clubhouse entry. This article details some draft drawings identifying the

improvements and layout expected by the many Members looking forward to the changes.

We expect there will be very little or no interruption to normal activities and use of the Club during the planned works. If there happens to be minor inconveniences we would ask the Members to be patient as when completed enjoyment will be at its best.

DOGS ON LEASH Over and over we continue to have issues with Members not cleaning up their dogs droppings. Repeated instances and complaint to several committees of the Club and Management will see signage being implemented detailing and identifying the responsible owner will be required to attend Protocol possibly putting their membership at risk or suspension. Please respect your fellow members and adhere to the requirements if bringing your pets to the Club.

The Fremantle to Albany race stated at 1100 on Friday 17 April with the majority of the fleet completing the 336 nm to finish sometime on the Sunday. The Albany to Fremantle ANZAC Commemorative Race started the following weekend at 1155 on 25 April, ANZAC day, immediately following morning service at Peace Park on the foreshore on Princess Royal Harbour.

Haywire, Division 2 with a crew of eight, and Kraken, double-handed, represented Hillarys Yacht Club in these iconic yacht races, which includes the rounding of one of the great capes in Cape Leeuwin.

These races are not held frequently with the last Fremantle to Albany Race held in 2009 and “The Leeuwin” [Albany to Fremantle] in 1983. The majority of modern offshore racing yachts are fitted with computers for weather and route optimisation. Grib wind files and current files allow the “naviguessors” to optimise where to go. Needless to say, all the estimates for the race to Albany were out by +12 hours.

The weather for both races was kind with 10 to 15 kts for the majority of the time. From the Leeuwin to Torbay, there was +10 kts more wind inshore and similarly if you were more than

Commemorative Race 30 nm offshore with yachts selecting their chosen route based on the wind direction when rounding Leeuwin. The wind swung from SE to E to NE as the tail enders rounded the Leeuwin thus favouring the smaller boats.

The race down encountered the largest swell for the year with +5m swells. These large swells created wind shadows in the troughs and provided a challenge for the “drivers”. It was in these swells that Farago broke their mast several meters above the deck. This was the first retirement with the second being Prime Factor with steering failing only 10 nm from the finish.

This was the first big offshore race for Haywire and with 6 skippers in the crew they were never short of an opinion.

Tanya ensured no one starved with provisions for the race there and back plus continuing onto Bali. Chris Kelly included some beauty therapy getting his front tooth ‘knocked out’ from obviously “biting off more than he could chew”.

Kraken match raced This Way Up, another 36 footer, with the yachts within 1 nm for the majority of the race down and similarly on the way back. Kraken “took the rum” in both races from the fully crewed This Way Up. Kraken was the only entry in double-handed for the race down with an elapsed time of 57 h 31 min and finished third on IRC overall behind Blondie first and Impulse second. Haywire finished 3rd on IRC and 4th on YAH in Div 2 with an elapsed time of 59h 57 min beating their sister ship La Premier. Calm, a TP52, was fastest with an elapsed time of 47 h 23 min. Sand Crabs Disco was third on YHA and fourth on IRC on the way down and sixth on both YHA and IRC in the return race.

...continued of wind, with some yachts just crossing the start line within the 30 min time allowance once the gun goes. The locals got to cheer the yachts individually as we crossed the start line, something that normally only happens when finishing. The wind filled in from the ESE with a beat all the way to Bald Head marking the end of King Georges Sound and the start of the Southern Ocean. Spinnakers were hoisted and carried from there pretty much to the corner “Cape Leeuwin”. On Sunday morning there were light fluky conditions around Cape Leeuwin extending all the way to Cape Naturaliste. The majority of the yachts passed in closed proximity to both Capes with the course requiring a 5 nm standoff to clear the reefs that extend to the south of Cape Leeuwin.

With more downhill sailing, the return race was faster with Calm again taking line honours and first on IRC Div 1 with an elapsed time of 33 h and 52 min. Haywire finished 8th on IRC and YAH in Div 2 with an elapsed time of 52h 34 min still managing to beat La Premier. Kraken had one other double hander competitor with Mark McRae in Panacea, a Beneteau 40.7, from Albany. Kraken managed another win with an elapsed time of 47 h 26 min and 4th on IRC overall. Panacea finished some 14 hours later.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

125ml natural yoghurt 1T lemon juice 1t ground turmeric 1T garam masala 1t chilli powder 1t ground cumin 1t ground coriander 1T grated fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1kg chicken thigh fillet, diced 2T ghee or peanut oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1t ground cardamom 1 cinnamon stick 425g can tomato puree 150ml chicken stock 250ml thickened cream Steamed basmati and fresh coriander to serve

Step 1 Combine yoghurt, lemon juice, turmeric, garam masala, chilli, cumin, coriander, ginger and garlic in a bowl. Add chicken meat, mix well, cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours, or overnight.

Step 2 Heat ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add onions, cardamom and cinnamon. Cook for 2 minutes until the onion softens but does not colour. Reduce heat to low.

Step 3 Add the marinated chicken, tomato puree and stock and simmer for 15 minutes.

Step 4 Stir in cream and cook for a further 10 minutes.

Step 5 Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with steamed basmati rice.

MOTHER’S DAY It was a full house at the Club this Mother’s Day. We had a total of 656 diners over breakfast, lunch and dinner. This year’s event was sponsored by Living Colour for Hair, donating $200 gift vouchers, three in total. The lucky winners were Lorraine Ireland, Kerry Bertolini and Elleree Chester.

THE GLOBAL PHENOMENON OF FACEBOOK At 1.37 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2009 Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, posted a message on the company’s blog with news of a milestone: The site had just added its 150-millionth member. Facebook now has users on every continent, with half of them logging in at least once a day.

“If Facebook were a country, it would be the eighth most populated in the world, just ahead of Japan, Russia and Nigeria,” Zuckerberg wrote. Fast forward 3 years and the number of active Facebook users had surpassed 1 billion.

Add a couple of more years and Hillarys Yacht Club has now landed in the Facebook world.

Age and Membership HYC One is not supposed to ask a lady about her age…but I will share with you that I am 50 years at being young!

The Fisk Family became members of HYC in February 2009.

We had just emigrated from South Africa and our sons, Arrik and Marcus joined the “Get into small boat sailing” (GISBS) programme run by Chris Kelly. Contrary to popular belief, I did not mistake the club for a day-care centre!!! But, having the boys engaged, whilst I searched for our first “home sweet home” had its advantages.

Family Background Keith, most supportive husband of 21 years, encourages me in life to “bite off more than I can chew”, and take on many challenges! We have 2 wonderful sons, Arrik 19 and Marcus 17 who represent HYC at National Sailing events, and coach me when I take the helm! I love all their support.

Family is one of life’s masterpieces, and we hold the belief that “A Family that plays together, stays together”. We may add ”A Family that sails together, hails together “(as heard many times from the cockpit of BlueChip!!)

Occupation Madam Speaker for the Fisk House of Representatives, Social Coordinator, Wife, Mother, Housekeeper (non-sailing weekends only), currently self-employed as a Bookkeeper to keep everything in balance….to the penny, or to an even heel!

Yachts We bought our 1st and only sailboat, 6 years ago, named “Blue Chip”, a Viking 30! A.k.a. Blue Chip(s) and Phillip Rock due to her close inspection of geological rock formations.

Never a moment of regret in choosing a Viking 30; the perfect, forgiving boat for a family learning to sail, and for those that like to push it to the limit in all conditions.

Achievements and Awards Other than learning to balance on my head in yoga, (a skill every racing sailor should practice), my most exciting achievement has been learning a bit about the world of sailing as a sailor, YWA Race Officer, and Race Committee MemberDinghy. And, realising I have so much more to learn!

With respect to awards, Blue Chip’s team won the Club Championship award in 2011/12… A very special moment for us all!

I share the HYC Ladies’ Skipper Race Trophy with many talented women sailors. That was the day I proved to myself that I can sail a boat! A moment I will remember forever!

I have received the Volunteer of the year award for both Dinghy Division and Club. Many of my learning experiences and achievements stem from participation in these Volunteer roles.

I have recently been selected by HYC to prepare a team for the Foundation 36’ Women State Keelboat Championships on the 16th May 2015. I am over the moon, and expressed to our team “I can, you can, we can” and the HYC Can-Can Team evolved! What an opportunity to show case our talented women sailors from Keelboat and Dinghy sailing section.

I am dreaming of my next special event; a sailing trip to the Mediterranean with Keith…one day!!

TAKING OPPORTUNITIES There have been many opportunities that have been available to members.

Two HYC yachts competed in the 2015 Fremantle to Albany Yacht race. On Haywire the 8 crew were selected from a number of the inshore yachts. These crew members had the opportunity to experience their first Albany race. Whilst this was my 21st race to Albany I was encouraged to ensure others had the opportunity. Nearly three days with little sleep and little food was not in the brochure.

HYC was represented in the State Women’s Championships held on Saturday 16th May. This regatta was sailed in the Foundation 36 Yachts on the Swan River from the South of Perth Yacht Club. This opportunity brought together nine ladies currently competing in the Dinghy and Keel sections.

The experience was terrific and is another example of building the camaraderie at the Club.

We are working on a number of opportunities in the next 12 months which includes all sections and activity groups. We do wish to see a number of visits to other clubs by our power community and it reciprocated.

The end of the summer sailing season has had a number of local coastal cruises, namely to Longreach Bay, Rockingham, and Stark Bay. These group events are always relaxed and fun filled, whether there are 2 yachts involved, or 7!

The Easter long weekend was a cruise to Rockingham, and it was an idyllic weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect for a night sail on Good Friday Eve, so a couple of yachts sailed down that night, and it was a spectacular sail with clear skies, a full moon, and light easterly winds... it was just perfect. As always with CIC events, this weekend was filled with social catch ups, drinks and delicious food, both on each other’s yachts, as well as on shore. The generosity and camaraderie of the group is always what makes these weekends most special and it should also be noted that the Rockingham Sailing Club (which is staffed entirely by volunteers) kindly gave us access to their facilities throughout the entire weekend, which was much appreciated.

The last cruise of the season was to Stark Bay, and the wind conditions for a long weekend at Rotto were ideal. Three yachts participated, De La Mer, Sana II, and Georgia. The group

took a leisurely approach to this weekend, and obtained bus passes in order to explore the island a little while they were there. With the perfect conditions, they were lucky enough to experience a pod of dolphins and a group of seals frolicking and relaxing just off the beach.

On a less “cruisy” note, several CIC yachts have enjoyed participating in the “jam” races, all vying for the “Cruiser’s Cup”. So far, Chris Blackney on Vaya Con Dios has won 3 races, Rita and Brian on Sana II have won 2 races, and Lesley and Ian Paterson donated a lovely trophy for the group.

On behalf of all the CIC group, we’d like to thank Brian and Rita for taking on the role of CIC captains for the last 3 years - their dedication to the group has been immense! While being captains has undoubtedly put them in a position to make many new friends within HYC, we are sure that they are eagerly looking forward to reverting back to ordinary member status, to simply enjoy some cruising for a while!

As winter approaches it is time to focus on winterizing which includes inspecting pens and reporting any loss of weights etc. to avoid damage during winter storms. You are also requested to remove any obstacles left on the jetties over summer and secure your penned vessel in line with the HYC by-laws.

EnergySafety and Consumer Protection have issued public warnings to consumers not to buy or use portable butane ‘lunchbox’ type cookers due to safety concerns. Six models are prohibited from sale and must not be used with 25 others being withdrawn from sale. A list of all butane gas cookers that have been withdrawn from sale is available on EnergySafety’s website at www.energysafety.wa.gov.au. A majority of the manufacturers advise that they must NOT be used in a boat, tent or caravan and the cookers should be disposed of in a safe manner, with the butane cylinders disposed of through an appropriate community waste or recycling centre.

Another safety concern is the continual charging of batteries in unvented locations. The Lead Acid wet cell when charging should have the caps open so that any pressure build up is relieved. These batteries give off hydrogen gas while charging so they must be in a well-ventilated place. The misconception with the AGM battery is that they do not give off hydrogen gas while charging and sometimes are installed in places that aren’t ventilated. This is a mistake. Under normal charging conditions they will not out gas, but they do have a small valve in the top of each cell that, if the battery overheats while charging, will open and release hydrogen. These batteries are very sensitive to charging voltage and temperature. Gel Cell batteries are sealed and do not require adding liquid after many discharges and recharges. However, they are sensitive to charging voltage and, if over charged and over heated, will out gas.

I draw your attention to Section 8 of “A Guide to Members and Marina Facilities” available on the HYC website outlining the requirements on battery locations and charging procedures.

Becoming Inter ‘Sectional’

AKA stepping outside your comfort zone

It is a perfect Wednesday and you are driving south, along West Coast Drive. You reach the top of the hill in Trigg and the traffic comes to a standstill. You know you shouldn’t, but you glance to the right to catch a glimpse of the HYC Anglers on Balaton Jack heading south, to their first fishing spot for the day. The ocean is glistening in the early morning light, inviting you to call in sick. You immediately get Section envy. You wonder why every Wednesday, seabreeze.com.au teases, yet is so cruel on the weekend. You promise yourself to become Inter ‘Sectional’ and do that fishing trip one day. You will be on that boat and as you glance to the left, you will smile when you see the hill. You will see the queue of cars on West Coast Drive. The sunrise will be glistening on the paintwork and windscreens like the ocean, but you will know better and there will be no return envy.

One perfect day in April 2015, I was lured to the other side, literally. I pulled up at HYC Q Jetty at 0645am with nine sets of eyes eagerly waiting for the last angler to arrive. Like an amateur, I carried my little bucket, some bait and a kitchen knife and climbed on board for that pleasure trip I had been promising myself for a while. It did not disappoint. With a borrowed rod and expert help, I caught my family dinner. A mackerel and five herring, making me the hunter-gatherer for a day. This was way outside my comfort zone. I usually swim with these creatures, often stroking them underwater as they follow me around like the children in the Pied Piper of Hamelin. These scaly children are attracted by the stirred up ocean floor as we hunt for crustaceans, the greatest prize being a cray leg which they proudly carry around like a dog with a bone, sucking the goodness out.

before me have been enticed to the windward side, to another Section of HYC. You may know Cass and JG and read of their Seachange adventure in an earlier Compass magazine. JG is still torn between Sections, sharing Dive accommodation at the recent Rotto Run but wearing his ‘yachties’ Seachange polo to the HYC function. JG’s dive buddies said it was to avoid the hefty fine of a gold coin donation, but as some new Dive Section members are asking who is JG and Cass, we are beginning to wonder if they have turned to the dark side for good, never again to voyage to the bottom of the sea.

I would not call myself an angler yet, however on one occasion I did catch a foxfish worthy of a prize in the AAA. My family ate the foxfish, but I would catch and release next time, not because of the taste, but because foxfish are extremely slow growing and are a very attractive species of wrasse. As

the Indian Ocean glassed off and I could see the fish nibbling on the bait, the urge to submerge was so powerful there was no doubt where my heart lies. The freedom and beauty under the boat still has the wow factor for me after nine years and 450 dives.

Next season, starting in November, ‘my’ Section will be promoting diver safety by running a Safe Diver of the year award, contested over an 8 month period, culminating in June 2016. Stay tuned for new monthly underwater photographic competitions and special events.

Some folk may say, my passion for scuba diving and the Diving Section is spirited and it will take more than a few perfect Wednesdays to convert me. For the moment I’m still part of the West Coast Drive crowd, but now I avoid Section envy commuting by train. This is not entirely true, I use my hand-held device to compare seabreeze, BOM and willyweather waiting for Mother Nature to divvy up the Dive Section’s share of perfect weather each weekend. Is it Friday yet?

This is my invitation to you all to step outside your comfort zone.

Remember your first ‘Sectional’ preference may not be your last. If you just take that tiny step or that giant stride, you will enter a magical world you never knew existed.

February Boat Competition With a weather forecast predicting winds and seas to build during the day, only three boats containing 15 anglers signed on for the competition.

However, some very nice fish were weighed in with 12 species represented at the 4pm weigh in.

Junior winner was Lucas Pohl, with three species and 38.682 points. (Lucas had the bag of the day with a nice breaksea cod and a baldchin groper). Second junior was Jake Speed also with three species and 36.762 points.

Lady winner with two species was Ruby McGrady with 25.882 points from Julie Loran, one species and 17.28points.

March Boat Competition Once again, the weather forecast was not favourable for a pleasant day’s fishing, yet, not expecting winds above 25 knots or seas above a metre or so, the comp was on and the 13 anglers set off to try their luck.

At the weigh in, all five of the juniors had fish to weigh, as did the single lady and three of the seven men.

In all, a disappointing day’s fishing with only eight species represented.

The number three Hillarys veterans team of Frank Pieruccu, Ian McCall, Denis Loran and Bill McPherson won the veteran’s team prize.

Zack Currie won a $200 voucher in the early nomination raffle.

Bill McPherson was one of the unluckiest anglers on the day, being stung by a flathead and catching a flounder that was weighed in at 1 gram under the state record.

Jake Speed, with four species was the junior winner and his skipper, Frank Pierucci with seven species the men’s section winner.

Lady winner was Julie Loran with one species.

Frank Pierucci won the wheel spin again with his 247g garfish.

AAA State Boat Competition With a good forecast, more than 30 boats lined up at the entry to Ocean Reef Marina for the 6.30am start to the competition.

Hillarys Yacht Club was well represented with 20 adults and five juniors.

familiarisation day was interrupted by a few showers, but the explanations and rules were covered. Wednesday started with a shower before settling to perfect conditions, however, fish were hard to find early on before all were able to snare at least a whiting or two. Thursday, was a wet bleak day, yet the enthusiasm of the young anglers had not waned and at the weigh in, seven species were represented with the best fish a 745g king george whiting caught by Andrew Waagener and a 500g skippy caught by Josh Atkinson.

Khye Gomez was awarded the special prize for having the equal most species (3) and the heaviest total weight (1.160kg) Another successful clinic thanks to the work of Mel Harvey and the volunteers from the Angling Section.

HYC HARBOUR CLASSIC In perfect conditions, 156 anglers competed in the 2015 HYC Harbour Classic.

Some very nice fish were caught with 12 of the 14 designated species weighed in.

As well as angling section members in their own boats, both Balaton Jack and Mirage were needed to accommodate the keen HYC members.

As he had won this prize last year, he donated it back for a redraw which was eventually won by Julie Loran.

Club Records Fall Although it has not been a very productive period for total fish catches, it has been a good period for some fish species caught exceeding the Club records.

On 11th March, Ian McCall caught a goatfish weighing 866g, beating the Club record by 95g.

On 28th March at the AAA state boat titles, Bill McPherson’s small tooth flounder weighing 1,470g was 465g over the Club record and only 1g short of the state record.

On 3rd April, Neville Baker caught a herring weighing 422g, 37g over the Club record.

Once again, this event was very successful, with thanks to the Sponsors, the Club management and the Angling Section volunteers.

However, the best of the lot was on 9th April, when 14 year old Ryan McDiamid’s pink snapper was weighed in at 9.365Kg, a whopping 1.465Kg over the Club record. We like to think Ryan’s experience at the junior fishing clinic in October last year had something to do with this.

Since the last Compass our Summer season ended. Our final race day is always a great fun day where the volunteers who have made racing possible for our sailors swap roles and go out sailing while the sailors take over the race management activities.

Surprising as it seems the volunteers – well some of them anyway were right onto the racing part of the day and apparently the casual observer may have thought that a sheep station was the winning prize. We have some keen sailors and it was great to see that adults can actually have some genuine fun while sailing. All in all we had a great summer season and the rest before Winter sailing starts is always welcome.

Some of our keen Optimist sailors have been doing some special training – continuing off from their sessions with Mike Davies prior to the Nationals and also the States. We have seen a significant advance in our junior sailor’s skills and it is showing in their racing with improvement obvious as the season progressed. The incentive of the Clubs HAS scheme is already beginning to show through and I look forward to

Our Presentation Dinner will be another outstanding success and the number of families taking part in our season finale activity. Congratulations to all the sailors who have sailed and enjoyed their fantastic sport that is sailing. To our Championship placegetters – good work on a successful season and to the Handicap winners consistency pays off and well done to all those who have ended the season on a high.

Our AGM being held at the end of May will see me finish as Dinghy Captain after 3 years. My appreciation and thanks are a seemingly poor response to the great help and assistance I have been privileged to receive from a great many people. Our fantastic volunteer group, the members of our Committee, Club Officers, our General Manager for making some wonderful things happen for our Juniors with their clubhouse and a special thanks to Chris Kelly who does a myriad of things behind the scenes that enable the Dinghy Division to function as it does.

I look forward to being able to work for the club in some other capacity.

Hillarys Yacht Club hosted the Pot of Gold and Dash for Cash in March with success for local boats. Ryan Binedell on Low Flying Duck and Dart Vader with Wayne Pitcher were first and second in division three whilst the two brothers Dean and Todd Giraudo were pitted against each other on the two Krakens with Dean picking up second to Lamotrek whilst Todd on the 3600 finished fourth. In Dash for Cash, in division one, Synergy overcame spinnaker problems to win ahead of Perle and the fastest yacht, Mulberry. In division two, Kevin Stacey sailed Pinta into first place ahead of Sublime and Volant.

Fastest was Covert Operation. The fickle winds separated the five yachts in division three however Sana 11 made the most of the wind shifts to win ahead of Vaya Con Dios and Comfortably Numb whilst Minx was fastest.

The conditions were ideal for Sally Malay who must have set a record in completing the journey in an hour and 45 mins and earning first on handicap ahead of Dart Vader and First Impression, courageously sailing two-up. In division two, Covert Operation, in their substitute boat, also handled the conditions superbly and recorded a first and fastest with Tropical Itch second and Blue Chip third. Comfortably Numb was again first and fastest! Thank you to Danny and the Club for a great night of celebrations at Rotto.

In the annual Man Overboard race there was success for Perle, Pandora and Vaya Con Dios in their respective divisions whilst the ladies aboard Haywire (Tania Bartram), Tropical Itch (Suzanne Brooke), and Holly Molly (Samantha Sharma) with much encouragement from the crews were first in their Ladies Skippers’ Race.

The introduction of the Cruiser Cup to entice the Cruising in Company sailors to participate in Keel races increased the number of JAM yachts in the six nominated consistency races with Sana 11, Holly Molly and Vaya Con Dios fairly regular participants and Lady of Leisure, Catabatic and de La Mer also giving it a shot. Short-handed was re-defined by Chris Blackney, who, on a particularly windy day sailed Vaya Con Dios on his own when the crew were recalled to work, and won! No wonder he won the inaugural Cruiser Cup.

Light winds, a complete contrast to the original weekend scheduled for the Rottnest and return races, greeted a fleet of twenty yachts and despite a south-westerly filling in late in the afternoon it still took Deckchairs Overboard 5hrs 34min to record fastest time and second place. Ian Conboy in Sandrine was first and Dart Vader third in division one. In division two, fastest time went to Covert Operation whilst Show Me won, Pinta was second and Volant was third. As the only JAM yacht, Comfortably Numb was first and fastest. The return race from Rotto was again a complete contrast: westerly winds

Six yachts are IRC rated and the competition between them for the IRC championship has been dominated by the performance of Deckchairs Overboard (eventual winner) however Dart Vader, Kraken X, Haywire and Mulberry have pushed Neil and made the race for second and third very interesting.

With seven Viking yachts in the Club and another just arrived (Helga) the race for the Viking Championship is tight however Chris Grant sailing Pandora has one hand on the Trophy with Blue Chip, Sublime and Volant trying to wrestle it from him. In the end they didn’t.

The Keel Dinner and Presentation Night was gala event to celebrate the successes of the many skippers and crews and to thank the many volunteers over the season. Congratulations to Deckchairs Overboard, skipper Neil Harrison and crew in achieving Club Champion, the IRC Consistency and overall Consistency in Division 1. Overall Consistency went to Vaya Con Dios (Chris Blackney) in Division 3 (JAM), Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) in Division 2.

As we reach the end of this year’s Rotto season we can reflect on some very mixed conditions – great at times but with lots of wind and waves as well. The cray fishing season was not so mixed with lots of legal cray caught and eaten. I heard very few complaints!

The Power Section was delighted to welcome Commander Mark Carruthers from Whitfords Sea Rescue to talk at our April meeting. The talk, covering many aspects of boat safety, was both informative and amusing at times and those who attended enjoyed a good evening.
