COMMODORE’S REPORT Well, summer has come and gone and now we are into autumn – sometimes a very good period for boating with no strong sea breeze to contend with and often sunny days with flat water. From February to late April, there was plenty of energy around the Club, with all sections very active.
Angling Unfortunately, the weather has been against the anglers this season, however their marquee event is the Harbour Classic Fishing Competition which was held mid-April. With $22,000 in prizes to give away, we attracted a big field of over 150 anglers and with some HYC Members sharing in the spoils. A big thanks to Danny, Garry and the Angling Section for making this event a feature in the Hillarys Yacht Club calendar.
Power The section lead by Leigh Clifton organized a fantastic sunset twilight cruise on Saturday 4th May. We have eight power boats heading out to Little Island and then down to Scarborough before heading home with approximately 70 members and friends on board. After the cruise we were joined by other members in Pinky’s Wet Bar and had a great night enjoying a “Pig-on-the-Spit” and plenty of fun. This
type of event is open to all Members, so next time you see it advertised: Register, come along and have a great time!
Rottnest Run What fantastic weather we had for the event which was supported extremely well by the power and sailing sections. The sailors enjoyed a strong Nor-easter on the way over with 20 yachts competing in the Hillarys to Rottnest race. Late afternoon and the marquee at the Rottnest Hotel was packed with HYC Members and it was great to see so many wearing their HYC Club or Section apparel. I’d like to thank the sponsors of this event: PK Construction, Peard Real Estate and Ramsay Air Conditioning with Daikin.
Sailing Well, the season is over and by the time you read this, presentations would have come and gone and the winter series will be starting. We had plenty going on in this section throughout the year and especially in the last quarter, with the Pot of Gold weekend, Sail Easter with over 60 competitors and more planned for next year. She Sails used a Friday night to encourage more female members to come for a twilight yacht sail. Congratulations to Chelsea Bradford and the crew of Whispering Jack for winning the Keelboat Club Championship by the narrowest of margins. Our Dinghy Section continues to grow with so many juniors coming through, which puts us in a good position to grow our sailing section now and in the future.

The Dive Section completed a very unusual task on Sunday the 5th May, where they located a motor vehicle on the floor of the Marina in the North Western Corner, attached 4 floats, and then with the aid of a land based vehicle dragged it over to the wall. The motor vehicle was then retrieved by a crane the next day. Well done to James and the other Divers.
I would like to thank all the volunteers that assisted the Club in any way throughout the year – your work and passion for the Club is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to Chris Kelly for receiving the Gold Medal at the Western Australian Sailing Awards for his Outstanding Contribution to Sailing – well done Chris! GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Our summer season has come to an end with our dinghy, keel and cruising divisions all holding their presentation dinners at the Club during May. Congratulations to all those recipients who have performed well this year in sailing and angling. Special recognition needs to go to some outstanding performances for Hillarys Yacht Club: Chelsea Bradford was crowned Club Champion at the keel presentation night. In receiving this award, Chelsea has become our youngest Club Champion at the age of just 19. Skippering Whispering Jack, a long time vessel at HYC, Chelsea has used her ability and knowledge gained through many years of junior sailing and training here at the Club to her advantage. Chelsea also assists our junior development programs as an instructor and coach. Well done Chelsea. Another significant achievement this year was awarded to Chris Kelly, our Sailing and Training Manager. At the recent WA Sailing Awards held at Royal Perth Yacht Club, Chris was awarded their Gold Medal for Outstanding Service and Contribution to WA Sailing. Chris is passionate about sailing and all that is HYC and we congratulate him on receiving this award, one he was also awarded in 2011. Thank you, Chris, and well done. Not to be out-done, our anglers also had great success. The AAA State Angling Titles were held at the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club and HYC entered four teams in the competition: one mens, two veterans and one ladies team. All teams fished well and we must congratulate the successful ladies team on becoming State Champions for the year! Well done to Julie Loran, Michele Campbell, Ruby McGrady and Debbie Cunningham who have flown the flag for HYC and are now part of folklore. Well done ladies, great work.
Around the Club there is still much more to come: Presentations, the Commodore’s Ball this month, new winter menus, midweek specials and weekend dining, Christmas in July, a Murder Mystery dinner theatre event in August, Father’s Day and the AFL finals in September and then Open October month including a ‘Viking’ themed Opening Day and Oktoberfest. Our Sunday Smorgasbord in the Members’ restaurant has seen good patronage, as have our midweek specials. As we move through winter, dining and menus will be varied to continue the choices available at the Club. There have been some lucky members since the last Compass distribution. Our Friday Members’ draw was won with a jackpot $2,000 and, not long after, Sunday’s ‘Jag the Joker’ went off again for another $2,000! Amazingly, the correct card was picked by the wife of the Member who won the last time the jackpot went off. Congratulations to all, your appreciated attendance at the Club has paid off. More reward events are planned as we move forward, so there is more to look forward to when attending and utilising all the Club has to offer. The drawn member needs to be present to collect the Jackpot, not friends of, sisters of, or five minutes away by car, they need to be in the building when drawn. Who would take a 40 year old yacht that had been riddled with 286 bullet holes after the bombing of Dubrovnik in 1991 on a circumnavigation of the globe?
Skipper Sasa Fegic from Croatia and crew member Nebojsa Petrovic sailed HIR 3, a CAT 34 monohull into Hillarys Yacht Club for a week-long stay in March. Avoiding the latitudes of the roaring forties they had just completed the crossing from Cape Town, South Africa in winds that were strong enough to cause a knock-down. The hull, looking much like the trusted global traveller, an S&S 34, was purchased from a small Italian shipyard in 1979 by original owner Mladen Sutej who made the first solo crossing of the Atlantic by a Croatian in 1981. Eight years later he sailed in the unorthodox direction of east to west around Cape Horn in a two year circumnavigation. Upon return to Croatia the yacht was then abandoned in a marina for ten years where the only work done was to pump it out to stop it from sinking.

Sasa purchased HIR 3 and set about replacing the electrics, rigging and the engine with a 27 HP Lombardini with the dream of, one day, sailing around the world. It was a dream underlined by a lifetime of sailing and working in the yacht charter business providing the necessary skills and experience. With departure scheduled for mid-2018, Sasa set about looking for crew using criteria he took from America’s Cup skipper Dennis Connor: the three most important requirements are “attitude, attitude and attitude”. Sailing skills can be learnt along the way. Not surprisingly his aptly named girlfriend Marina fitted the bill. On his website he actually lists tolerance, determination, good will, improvisation and sense of adventure. After a farewell party in Zagreb for friends and sponsors, HIR 3 left the port of Porec, cleared customs at Malilosinj and headed across the Mediterranean. Their objective: to

have a beer at the Miclavi Yacht Club, only reached by those intrepid sailors rounding the Horn. Fast forward to HYC and Sasa reports that he loves Aussis beer, just not the price! Sailing down the Atlantic beating into constant 25 to 30 knot winds, the forestay broke causing a detour to Brazil for repairs and an enjoyable two week layover. This caused a potential delay in arriving in South Africa and a visa problem; solved by what Sasa calls “the Balkan solution”. Arriving in Cape Town, they were greeted by friends who handed them their passports and new visas. For the would-be circumnavigators, HIR 3 has Navik wind self-steering, uses Iridium Go satellite phone and Predict Wind which allows followers to track their voyage. Power is supplied by solar panels, food is both fresh (not from supermarkets where it has already been refrigerated and doesn’t last), some vacuum packed food and some canned. They have a hand operated water-maker though they haven’t had to use it. Sasa sails conservatively with reefs in the main especially at night and generally sails away from low pressure areas. Check out the track across the Indian Ocean. After HYC it is on to Melbourne, Sydney, possibly New Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand before heading to Cape Horn and having that beer at the Miclavi Yacht Club. We wish them fair winds, moderate seas and a safe return to Croatia. John Bird
Baudin visits HYC Darren Russell, an Albany shipwright, and his wife Linda called into HYC with Baudin for a couple of weeks on their way to the Abrolhos around Easter. Kathleen, a motor sailor fishing boat originally built in 1946 out of 40mm jarrah, and owned for many years by notable historian Leslie Marchant was refurbished and renamed Baudin by Darren in recognition of Marchant’s reference to Baudin in his book France Australe. The refurbishment included re-planking in places, replacing the engine, a repositioned and taller mast, re-rigging, new sails, cabinetry and pilot-house so that she is now a wonderful little ship for ocean passages. Nicolas Baudin was selected by Bonaparte to map the coast of Australia for France and conducted two sorties up the west coast in 1801 and 1803 in the Geographe. The Naturaliste captained by Hamelin accompanied him on the first voyage. Many of the features of the west coast of Australia were named during these voyages.

St. Patrick’s Day An Irish theme always goes down so well, doesn’t it? This year’s St Patrick’s Day buffet was no exception, with well over 200 people enjoying the Irish themed buffet and classic Irish music from the Ironbark Rebel band. It wasn’t quite highland dancing, but the dance floor got some use and a great time was had by all.
Twilight Cruise and Pig-on-a-Spit With HYC’s Power Section at the helm, the Twilight Cruise was lucky with the weather and enjoyed the sunset aboard several Members’ power yachts. The 100 strong crowd enjoyed a 2-3 hour twilight cruise and were welcomed back with a mouth-watering pig on the spit roast with all the trimmings, and oh, that crackling was to die for! The Chefs didn’t disappoint, posing for photos with Members and gaining a flurry of compliments and thanks from hungry cruisers! Many thanks to Chef Damo and his team and to Graham Townsend for providing the Spit.
Mother’s Day A fabulous day at the Club with Mums being treated by their nearest and dearest and, in some cases, the entire extended family! Our breakfast and lunch sittings were sold out again with dinner being a more quiet affair. Club favourite Jhoe Mura entertained the breakfast crowd with his silky tones and Beth and Col’s Acoustic Duo played some relaxed versions of old and new hits during lunch whilst the kids were kept busy with balloon twisting and a magic show. Towards the end of a busy day, the dinner crowd were also in with a treat with the soothing sounds of Jay Weston. You can see some of the Mother’s Day photos in our Through the Porthole section on pages 18 and 19.
Coming up... We’re excited to have some great events coming up over winter, starting with the grand Commodore’s Ball later in June. The challenge of creating a warm Winter Wonderland in the Harbour Room has been a fun one and we look forward to treating Neil Harrison’s guests with an event to behold! Futher ahead, our annual Christmas in July party is again our excuse to not have to wait until December and with music by Missy & Me, its going to be a great night at the Club. August will see our first Murder Mystery event - delivered by a professional company that has won awards in the UK and is now bringing their talents to Australia. Know your skipper
Louise Harvey
Louise was born in the UK and came to Australia in November 2001. On arrival in Australia she completed a Medical Association Receptionist course and started work in the medical industry. Over the years she gradually moved into finance and now works at Transmin in their accounts department. Louise completed a sailing course at Fremantle but she wanted somewhere closer to home so she enquired at HYC where she met Brett and Lynda Bailey. Louise sailed with Chris Kelly and then moved to Sensei as a crew member. Louise always fancied a change of lifestyle and with the help of various people at HYC she bought Sandrine from Ian and Marie Conboy and now lives on-board. Louise renamed Sandrine to Rushmere after the village in Suffolk where Louise grew up. Louise is a very active volunteer at HYC taking part in various events including marina clean- up day, discover sailing day, Easter dinghy regatta and an early start for breakfast at the fishing competition, and she hates early mornings! She is now a regular member of the start box on keel race days but when she is not rostered on she wants to do some racing to get sailing experience. Louise took Rushmere to Rottnest for both the race and the Billy Run.

She is also a member of Cruising in Company and is looking forward to gaining experience and joining them on their cruises.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Training and Development has come through a busy season and recently completed another successful school holiday program and the Easter regatta. Throughout the school holidays, 28 youngsters participated in Tackers 1, seven in Tackers 2 and seven in Tackers 3. In total, 48 students went through a variety of courses in just two weeks. The school holiday programs continue to assist the growth of our junior sailing at Hillarys Yacht Club and this development will continue into our winter programs. Throughout the winter period we are encouraging our sailors to work on their fitness levels with monthly testing to assist them in developing their own required fitness levels.

At just 19, Chelsea already has several years of keelboat sailing under her belt, skippering Whispering Jack and leading the HYC team at the Ladies State Championships, as well as being involved in Westsail, WAIODA and many others. Further afield, Dinghy Coach and Development Officer Jacinta Aisworth has been busy competing on an international stage, chasing the wind in Italy, Portugal and France. The experience of racing at a top level and what it takes to be a champion is well known to Jacinta and we look forward to welcoming her back in June to inspire and build more HYC champions.
Award-Winning Training Team The month of May has seen some great accolades brought into the Training & Development team. With commitment to sailing and level of knowledge at this level, it is no wonder that Hillarys Yacht Club rates amongst the highest in the country for training new sailors. Training Manager Chris Kelly won the highest honour at the Australian Sailing - WA Awards, being awarded the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Sailing. Chris shared this honour with Chris Goldacre, both being acknowledged for their 30-year long commitment to WestSail the annual camp that has inspired thousands of young sailors, some going on to win Olympic gold medals. Australian Sailing acknowledged their presence in the WA sailing community: “All WA sailors have been inspired by Goldy and Coach K at some point throughout their time in sailing. Their iconic characters and love of what they do is an inspiration to us all”. Within the Club, Development Officer & Coach Chelsea Bradford has just become the youngest ever skipper to be

COACH’S CORNER SUDDEN SQUALLS
This season we have seen a variety of weather both in Dinghy and Keel events. Sudden squalls are sometimes upon us immediately, so its important to know what to do and act accordingly: Lower the sails immediately, this will reduce the load and the possible damage. If close to shorelines or obstruction, reefing the main is also an opportunity. The sudden increase in wind can also weaken the stitching so seek advice from your sailmaker if you get caught in a squall.
Radio Courses Marine radios are essential and important safety equipment on board your vessel. Learn how to confidently and competently operate and use correct radio protocols and procedures when using a marine radio.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
Dive Trip to Busselton The summer dive season is now a distant memory but the Dive Section can look back on a number of memorable events and trips. In February, we went down to Busselton to dive on Busselton Jetty and the wreck of the HMAS Swan. The trip was capably organised by our busy social planners, Julie, Karen and Jenny, while Steve arranged the diving side of things. The first dive on Friday was off the iconic Busselton Jetty. The jetty is some 2km long and is one of WA’s classic and best-known dive sites. After a long walk down the jetty, the group was ready to take the plunge, after resolving a couple of minor technical issues – anyone seen a large pair of fins? The dive is up to about 8m deep and the pylons supporting the jetty are overgrown with a great variety of soft corals, sponges and gorgonians, which attracts plenty of fish and other macro marine life such as nudibranchs, crabs and sea stars. While the cray fishermen in the group were a little disgruntled, the photographers were in heaven and darted around like a shoal of happy little clown fish. Their photographs show an amazing range of fish, from the multicoloured leatherjackets, to old wives, bullseyes, scorpionfish, dhufish, sweep and cuttlefish. Who says you have to go to Ningaloo or the Great Barrier Reef to get world class diving? Our Saturday dive was on the wreck of the HMAS Swan, which is about 2km off Point Picquet in Geographe Bay. The Swan, a 113m long naval destroyer, was scuttled on 14 December 1997 to create an artificial reef, which has attracted a great variety of marine life. We took a local dive charter boat from Busselton for the day and then did two dives on the wreck. Conditions were good and visibility was up to about 20m. For the first dive, we went down the dive line to the crow’s nest or comms tower, at about 9m, and then down to the stern and rudder of the ship at about 31m deep. Probably the best sighting of the dive was the large wobbegong shark which lives under the stern of the ship, near the prop. Estimates of the size of the wobbe varied from 3 to 6m (must have been the fishermen in the group), but either way, he was a very big fish. The second dive of the day was concentrated on the top and bow of the Swan, and also included entry into the hull and bridge of the ship, through access holes cut into the hull. This allowed some spectacular photo opportunities, and all of a sudden, the photographers were in demand. There was a continuous cluster of divers on the bow of the ship, trying to impersonate Leonardo DiCaprio on the bow of the Titanic.

While the divers were doing poor imitations of Hollywood movie stars, the non-divers were on a tour of the local wineries, and doing a very good job of imitating the Eagles after winning the 2018 Grand Final. We could hear the bus halfway back to Dunsborough! Needless to say, the very serious business of diving was relieved by some memorable social events, at both a local restaurant and at our accommodation in Sandy Bay. Can

Winter is upon us and it’s a perfect time to reflect on the completion of our summer series events - culminating in Sail Easter - thank our supporters, and congratulate the winners recognised at our Presentation Night. Sail Easter delivered some new challenges for our Club sailors and visitors in the form of swell, stingers and fickle breezes. Stamina and flexibility allowed us to complete five races on Saturday and another three on Sunday to ensure a successful regatta. Credit to the organising committee, volunteers and coaches. The level of consultation and input from the coaches makes Sail Easter unique in the Perth sailing calendar and planning is already underway for next year’s event, including the Laser State Championships. We look forward to the support of the whole club community in achieving the objectives as described in the HYC strategic plan to: conduct greater level of events, such as State events; market and promote HYC branding and to conduct major aquatic sports events at the club.

Mulberry, all smiles after a good night, begins the race back from Rottnest
Ocean Reef Regain North Coast Trophy Taking a progressive score ahead of HYC into the final day, Ocean Reef never looked back from the first race despite Whispering Jack from Hillarys being first and fastest in division one and again in race three. Perle had a win and Bad Habits was consistent for Hillarys to help their cause. The depth of Ocean Reef showed with Hot Gossip and Whim A Way consistent placegetters in all races of division one and Feelin Free and Petite Bateau were placed in all three races for Ocean Reef in division two. For Hillarys Catabatic had a win, a second and a third. There were supportive performances from Xtreme, Blue Chip, Volant and Tropical Itch. The final result after ten races in the series held over summer was a resounding win to Ocean Reef. The champion yacht in division one was Whim A Way skippered by Mick Caulfield with Feelin Free and Volant tying for first in division two.
Success in Ocean Races Shared Both the Rottnest and Mindarie races had conditions on one leg that were challenging. The SE breeze for the race up to Mindarie dropped before the sea breeze came in and the fluky breeze for the return race from Rottnest was from the NE. Yachts that managed those difficult conditions fared best and were in for a drink waiting for the unlucky ones. Surfer Rosa blitzed the field both ways winning the Rottnest race, steady Helga won in division two and Deckchairs Overboard in three. Larraine Brindle (Anastasia) was delighted with a win going to Rottnest, albeit by 7 seconds. Mulberry, Whispering Jack and First Impression were tied on points after both

Mindarie races however First Impression prevailed by just 15 seconds over Whispering Jack. Helga pipped Tropical Itch in division two and Show Me pipped Deckchairs Overboard by 45 seconds after finishing on equal points.
Kraken Success in Albany Race Todd Giraudo and David (Dubbo) White sailed Kraken into first place on IRC overall, first in the double handed division and third place for line honours in the Fremantle to Albany offshore race in April. Picking up where they left off with their success in the Melbourne to Osaka race, Kraken had an exciting duel with Crush, also a Sunfast 3600. They shadowed each other until late in the race when Kraken broke away on a different tack, finishing 25 minutes ahead of Crush in 1d, 18h, 47m, 52 sec.
Presentation Night The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the achievement of Chelsea Bradford who skippered Whispering Jack in division one to win overall consistency in that division and was crowned Club Champion for 2018/19. At just 19, Chelsea is the Club’s youngest Skipper ever to be awarded the accolade. The competition for Club Champion was close with Deckchairs Overboard (division 3) and Blue Chip (division 2) who won the overall consistency for their division, being second and third for Club Champion. Others to feature as trophy winners included Sally Malay, Lithium, First Impression, Surfer Rosa and Perle in division one whilst in division two HYC Training, Helga, Tropical Itch, Volant, Farrouk, Sheer Magic, Feelin Free and Xtreme shared the spoils. Comfortably Numb, Sensei, Show Me, Anastasia and Catabatic featured as winners in division 3 as well as Deckchairs Overboard of course.

Greg Shakeshaft produced two slideshows featuring the efforts of the ladies in the Women’s State Championships and the men in the four HYC yachts who competed in the Fremantle to Geraldton and return race. Sumptuous food prepared by Damian and the team, music by Simon and Babba and a successful fundraiser for dinghy and keel state championship competitors rounded out another great Hillarys Yacht Club event.

CRUISING IN COMPANY Mindarie Cruise: 4 May 2019 Two yachts: Seachange with five persons on board and Eaglehearts with three persons onboard, braved the forecast of 100% rain for the sail to Mindarie. Twenty-two others decided to drive to Mindarie and meet the brave yachties at 12noon for lunch. The yachts departed HYC at 09.30, with a 10-15 knot norwesterly wind and a confused 2m westerly swell. As to be expected, the wind always comes from the direction in which you wish to travel. The crew on Eaglehearts joked that in the afternoon we would experience the south westerly sea breeze and that would be a pleasant sail into the wind at the end of the day .

To everybody’s delight the predicted rain held off for the sail to Mindarie, with regular patches of blue sky being encountered throughout the morning. This pleasant weather allowed for regular cups of brewed coffee and cake to be consumed, whilst Eaglehearts tacked a couple of times to reach Mindarie. Seachange sailed a close hauled course and reached Mindarie without a diversion. We encountered Whitfords Sea Rescue off Ocean Reef Marina apparently looking for something but we were advised that it was only a practice drill. We also held a watch for some sea kayaks that were making their way back from Little Island to the mainland. I was glad to be on Eaglehearts and not in a sea kayak as the sloppy seas made it difficult for our sailing - I could only imagine how hard the paddle back would have been! The two yachts reached Mindarie around 12 noon and tied up alongside the charter jetty, close to a popular food and beverage outlet. The thirty-two CIC members gathered around two long tables, exchanging the regular tales and conversation whilst enjoying a delightful meal washed down with our chosen beverage. Yet again it was great company and good to catch up with some members who we had not seen for some time for different reasons. The group refrained from singing Happy Birthday and embarrassing the three members present who were celebrating their birthdays. The afternoon drew to a close around 14.30 and the two yachts slipped their mooring lines and headed south whilst the others members of the CIC group drove back from whence they came. To the skippers’ delight the 10knt norwester had held and the rain had completely passed, meaning that it was a very pleasant starboard reach back to Hillarys arriving back in our pens around 16.30. Eaglehearts had returned with two additional crew that needed to be driven back to Mindarie to collect the vehicles and as we lived up that way, it was of no inconvenience. Easter Mandurah Cruise Due to the bad weather forecast for Good Friday, four boats from CiC went down on Thursday 18th: Zest, Vaya Con Dios, Aqua Cabana and Banco. The winds were from the south so it was a long motoring trip with the last boat arriving in at 1930. The winds were very strong on Thursday night with a lot of rain, so Good Friday was spent mopping up! Sharkeys put on plenty of fish and chips in the evening and we all enjoyed ourselves. On Saturday morning, nine of us were taken around the Mandurah canals on a party boat by a friend of John’s, Don Bier, which was very pleasant and we all appreciated the great waterways there. Saturday evening started with the Banco cocktail party very kindly hosted by Ian & Cassandra on Zest. Hugh & Robyn Nankivell and Geoff & Rita James drove down to join us for the evening, a suitable number of Norman’s jokes were heard between cocktails and we then went on to dinner in the club. Due to a lack of wind the trip to Dawesville was not attempted on Sunday, so we spent a lazy day flying drones, and walking into town to enjoy the club’s childrens party
day for Chris and Sue’s grandchildren. In the evening we all went to Jasmines Thai restaurant and were joined there by Antony Mee and Chris Harmer who came down on their motorbikes. It was decided that, with the northerly winds forecast for Monday, we would delay our return to Hillarys until Tuesday. Kurt, on Aqua Cabana, was continuing down south to Dawesville so he left late on Monday morning and Mayumi drove their car down to meet him, having dropped Norman at the railway station as he could not stay the extra day. On Tuesday, the three remaining boats set sail for Hillarys although Vaya Con Dios, who left early because of commitments, had to motor a great deal of the way. Toby Hopkins very kindly came up on Banco which made life very easy for John! I would like to thank Ian and Cassandra for their very generous use of their boat, and Cassandra especially for feeding all of us on more than one occasion. John Carver

March Boat Competition Eighteen anglers turned out for the March boat competition. One Mini Junior, three Juniors, one Lady and thirteen men. Oscar Lihou took the honour winning the Mini Junior category with three species which also included the heaviest herring of the day. Charlie Lihou was the winner of the Junior category with two species, and Bart Whitehead was runner up with Jensen Bramwell very close behind. Julie Loran was the Ladies winner with three species including the largest Skippy caught on the day. The men’s winner with four species was Frank Pierucci with a very nice King George at just under 1kg. Runner up was Dennis Loran with three species followed by Nick Fitt with two species. Harbour Classic 13th April 2019 The local waters forecast for the day ensured that the competition was given the green light to go ahead. With 159 anglers registered to take part and with over $22,000 worth of prizes to be shared, the early morning sign-on at the boat ramps, and the breakfast bar and coffee was soon doing a brisk trade. At 7.00am sharp a small flotilla of boats set off and the optimistic anglers were on their way to take part in this HYC annual premier fishing competition. At the end of the day’s fishing there was a good turnout inside the Club for the weigh-in and results of the winners, as well as some great food and refreshments and, of course, hard luck stories. With 15 species to chase, there were some fine fish caught including a winning Dhufish at 11.7kg, Pink Snapper at 7.54kg and a Queen Snapper at 5.2kg. This year just one HYC angler managed to catch a winning fish - well done to Rob Audas who took the prize for the heaviest Skipjack Trevally. The heaviest fish caught by a junior, Coby Hohan, was a 2.12kg Pink Snapper. Three designated species were NOT caught on the day: Spanish Mackerel, Harlequin, and Flathead.

Junior Fishing Clinic Once again another successful and enjoyable three day programme with 23 young participants. The first day covered safety, demonstrations and instruction on some basic fishing rigs and knots, with the children making up their own rigs. This was followed by a walk to the beach where the kids showed off their casting skills into a choppy sea and some brisk headwinds. A visit from two Recfishwest representatives gave the youngsters an insight into the work and purpose of their organisation which helps and enhances so many aspects of recreational fishing. Days 2 and 3 were spent out on the water on the two club boats fishing for different species with the third day being a competition for the most species and the heaviest fish. All the youngsters caught fish on both days, catching some nice fish on the third day to weigh-in for the competition.
April Boat Competition A total of 15 anglers took part in the April competition: one Junior, four Ladies, and ten Men. Kim De Vries caught three species which included a nice salmon at 4.9kg to win the Junior category. Julie Loran was the winning lady with three species and Michelle Campbell was a very close runner up, also with 3 species. Ron Malek was the Men’s winner with four species including a nice Pink Snapper. Runner up was Bryan Norris also weighing in four species including a snapper, just not quite as heavy as Ron’s. Don’t forget, good things come to those who bait.
May Beach Competition It could have been the weather, or maybe they were still on holiday but only eight anglers took part in the May beach competition. It was hard work trying to get those fish on the hook in what was considered reasonable weather conditions over the two days. Everyone moved around to try their different favoured locations but to no avail, the fish were not biting. Michele Campbell was the Ladies winner with a leather jacket weighing 0.329kg and Aiden Rinney was the Men’s winner with a herring at 0.170kg. The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. MARINA FACILITIES Winter is fast approaching and it is important that you spend time winterizing your vessel and pen to withstand the stormy weather conditions expected in the coming months. The dinghy storage area and laser racks need to be free from loose equipment that may have been left/stored there over the summer months. The correct tie down procedure must also be followed, as this will prevent them from being blown onto other vessels or into the harbour, as was the case not long ago. All Head Sails need to be secured appropriately as some have come loose in the past during high winds. This not only results in a ripped headsail, but also creates a dangerous situation to tame the sail and get it secured again. Pen occupiers need to ensure that their boats are secured and all mooring lines and fittings are in good working order. Significant damage may occur due to worn mooring ropes or incorrect methods of securing the vessel in the pen. If you are not sure or want assistance then simply contact your jetty MFC representative who will provide you with the appropriate advice. The following guidelines should prove a handy task reminder: • Ensure your mooring lines are not going to chafe • Make sure all weights are in place (where fitted) • All shackles are to be safety wired. Items such as eyebolts, shackles and sliders are greased to prevent premature wear and windblown rust flakes staining the fibreglass of vessels • Inspect all ringbolts and nuts, which are to be securely tightened (Any problems with these items should be referred to the Club’s General Manager or the respective jetty, Marina Facilities Section representative, for follow up maintenance) • Spliced ropes to have a minimum of five tucks and of the correct length so that the vessel is moored to cover minimum tidal surge and be in a safe position for all possible occasions • Inspect splices in contact with shackles that it includes a metal thimble, whereas soft splices in contact with bollards or cleats are to be protected from chafing • Ventilate the vessel as much as you can Make a habit of inspecting your vessel on a regular basis during the coming months as while members of the Marina Facilities Committee undertake regular jetty walks they do not board vessels unless there is an imminent threat to the vessel or club property. When checking your boat, and especially during bad weather, look for: • Worn eyebolts, missing nuts, mooring shackles, thimbles • Missing weights • Frayed/broken ropes • Excessive movement/surging • Vessel trim/listing • Bird nests • Power cord clear of water • Loose covers/clears and sails flapping/unfurling.

Where possible stern ropes should be crossed as shown, if the boat configuration makes that impracticable, short ropes to be adjusted to allow for tidal variations. Pen Holders should consult Jetty Reps if in doubt. On floating jetties, the same number of ropes are recommended, taken directly to the cleats. Thimbled eyes to chains/sliders. In Club rental pens, the Pen holder is responsible for the mooring lines, thimbles and shackles attaching the ropes to the chains, HYC is responsible for the weight, chain, securing shackles and eyebolts. In leased pens, the owner is responsible for the ropes, thimbles, shackles, weights, chains, and shackles, HYC is responsible for the eyebolts. Maintenance concerns should be reported to the Moorings Officer or Reception on a Pen Maintenance Report Slip. HYC goes to Rottnest Island The Power section was well represented and a fun time was had at Mini Golf where Barry Garratt-Reed managed to take first prize with a one-over-par score. Greg Beal got two holes-in-one and two other members also managed a hole-in-one each. Suzanne Griffith came last with the highest par. Afterwards we relaxed with a few drinks at the Rotto Pub and many thanks go to our sponsors.
Twilight Cruise & Pig-on-a-Spit This event was well attended with over a hundred people participating. Eight Boats went out on the water but some returned after an hour as the ocean was quite sloppy. By around 6pm, everyone had returned to Pinky’s Wet Bar for drinks and a fantastic Pig-on-the-Spit roast, once again cooked by Chef Damo and his team who received high praise from everyone that enjoyed their efforts.
