COMMODORE’S REPORT Christmas I hope you all had a merry Christmas and may we all have a happy and prosperous 2019. It’s hard to believe it’s March already, time flies! Christmas was a busy time for all with sailors competing all over the country. Some of our youth sailors went to Tasmania for National Championships and 6-8 yachts headed to Rockingham for the annual Cockburn Sound Regatta. Over the same period, we saw a lot of empty pens in the marina, so it was great to see our members being active in the boating scene, whether it be sail or power.

The Social Side There has been a significant amount happening on the social side with our New Year’s Eve event and our regular Sunday afternoons in the Wet Bar with live music and Jag the Joker. We had a full house for Valentine’s Day dinner which just goes to show there is still love in the air at HYC! Our next big event is St Patrick’s Day on Sunday 17 March – please make a booking as we have great food and a live band. There are already over 100 bookings so get in quick! Also, please save the date for the Commodore’s Ball on 22nd June with a ‘Winter Wonderland’ theme. In the last edition of Compass, our Vice Commodore Fred Gere, wrote an article on Reciprocal Clubs and in late November, I visited the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (formerly The Royal Singapore Yacht Club) and it is an outstanding venue with accommodation, spa and swimming pool. If you are visiting Singapore, I encourage you to make use of this great facility.

The Club has undertaken a fairly comprehensive food and beverage survey which resulted in 492 responses which is a great return rate. A summary of the feedback is provided as part of the General Manager’s report and there will be some changes on how we can best cater for the Members’ needs. Approximately 20 Members took part in a four hour Strategic Planning workshop, which covered many areas of the Club including food & beverage, youth and junior sailing, attracting more members, increasing participation of our current membership base, Member functions and events, and a whole lot more.

Events We recently ran another very successful Pot of Gold regatta which saw HYC host 20 yachts from other clubs. We enjoyed a great Saturday night buffet and plenty of HYC hospitality. The Power Section went to Rottnest Island recently and had a fantastic time. I am sure Leigh will cover that in his Power report. If you do have a power boat and want to enjoy some great fun and friendship, please make contact with Leigh and join the section. Lastly, some of our sailing women will be representing HYC at the State Keelboat Women’s Championships on the river on Saturday 16 March and we wish them all the best! They have been training as a group on the river every Friday night on Foundation 36 sailing yachts. Good luck ladies! Don’t forget to use Hillarys Marina Lifting Services as it is owned by Hillarys Yacht Club and there is a new management team in place to look after your boating needs.  Neil Harrison

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT I hope everyone has enjoyed their Christmas and summer holiday period. If you didn’t get away then I also hope you got to use and visit the Club. During January, we distributed the Member Food and Beverage survey and I must thank the 492 members who took the time to respond. This represented an approximate 50% reply rate of those membership categories the survey was distributed to. Below is a short summary of the feedback received out of ‘5’, with 5 being the high mark. Of those questions relating to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday midweek restaurant offerings these were the returned results: Value for Money 4.2 Quality of Food 4.1 Varied Enough 3.9 Level of Service 4.3 Value for money, quality of food and level of service all rated well. Varied enough week by week rated 3.9 out of 5. This is recognised and will be enhanced throughout March. The questions relating to restaurant lunch and dinner menus returned these results: Value for Money 4.0 Quality of Food 4.1 Varied Enough 3.9 Level of Service 4.2 The trend in results was, again, quite similar. The lowest ranking was 3.9 out of 5. Given the feedback and comments received, it was not the number of meals or variety within our menus, but recognition that menus need to be changed more often. This will also be implemented shortly including healthy and vegetarian choices. The feedback was also positive, identifying that members were regularly attending and wanting the menu to be varied more often. The question relating to the Wet Bar menu received lower results in comparison to others: Value for Money 3.8 Quality of Food 3.6 Varied Enough 3.4 Level of Service 3.8 This menu and the feedback provided is being prioritised and currently reviewed. The question ‘How do you rate the Buffet/Carvery options Friday and Sunday evenings’ resulted in: Value for Money 4.1 Quality of Food 4.0 Varied Enough 3.7 Level of Service 4.3 There was again a trend in responses. Variety is the stand out and this has been recognised. The level of service, as with the other questions, remained positive. The top 8 responses to ‘What is it about the Club dining options you enjoy?’ included: “I enjoy the setting and view”, “the service is of good quality”, “the food is of good quality”, “it’s convenient and close to home”, “there is a good variety of food & beverages”, “being part of the HYC community”, “can bring kids” and “liking the raffles and member draws”. The top responses to ‘Which events would you like and attend at HYC?’, were Steak Night, Tapas Night, Pasta/Pizza, Wine Dinners, Pie/Parmy and Family Nights. All of these are being reviewed with planned development.

6 Compass March 2019 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

The main responses to why Members attend our events at the Club were: it depends whether my friends were attending, value for money, the quality of food & beverage, the food & beverage options available suit the ticket price, the band/musician playing, I prefer the lower cost smaller events, and I prefer to socialise in the restaurants and bars. Whilst all questions were responded to positively by the majority of members there was some lesser feedback and comment additional to these results relating to consistency and level of service, size of meals, cost of meals, healthy meal choices and decor. It was heartening to see a very small minority, less than 2% of responses provided negative feedback, which is still acknowledged with future planning. I again thank all members, who participated in the survey and became eligible for the draw to win a complimentary year of membership. Congratulations to Derek & Kaye Harnwell for winning that prize!  Danny Rechichi

Wheelchairs for Kids

Why HYC’s Tuesday Group volunteers are so committed to the cause.

Hillarys Yacht Club has, for years, supported our community as well our own activities and the Club’s Tuesday Group of dedicated volunteers have been committed to raising money for Perth based charity Wheelchairs for Kids. If you’ve ever been to the Club’s Melbourne Cup events, you’ll have noticed our team of volunteers selling you your winning (hopefully) sweepstakes ticket. What you may not realise is that the money raised from this initiative goes directly to Wheelchairs for Kids and over the years, Hillarys Yacht Club has donated thousands of dollars to this great cause. Wheelchairs for Kids is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Scarborough and is the first of its kind, making fully adjustable wheelchairs that can be adapted as a child grows. Distributed to nearly 100 different countries since its inception, Wheelchairs for Kids is now known world-wide, with orders that don’t look to be slowing down any time soon. But this charity didn’t start out with the aim of easing the healthcare burden in poverty-stricken countries. The initial aim was a lot closer to home. In 1998, Olly Picket was the instructor at a welding workshop for young people who, for whatever reason, had dropped out of mainstream schooling or were readjusting after a stint in the juvenile prison system. They welded a variety of products – road sign frames, street sign brackets - and this led to apprenticeships and TAFE qualifications for many of them, subsequently gaining them jobs and drastically improving their future. The workshop was life changing, even then, without a wheelchair in sight. It was a visit from a few members of the Rotary Club of Scarborough (who are still heavily involved today) that suggested the welding group create wheelchairs out of old

bike frames. The enthusiastic youths jumped at the chance to try something different and began sorting through hundreds of donated bikes to find ones that would be fit for purpose. They succeeded and the initial prototype wheelchair was constructed. However, this was a labour intensive and time consuming process that, ultimately, conflicted with other priorities the youths needed to tick off in order to get their TAFE qualifications. Undeterred, Olly had a go at creating a wheelchair from standard materials and created a second prototype. Before he knew it, an order of 20 chairs was placed to accompany a container of medical supplies being sent to Fiji through Rotary Donations In-kind. And then another 30 were ordered… and so it grew. Some of those youngsters, who owed their new success to the welding workshop, volunteered their time. Others followed, including retirees and those in nursing homes and church groups who created rugs and teddies to go with the wheelchairs. The operation out-grew several workshop areas and with support from Christian Brothers and Rotary Club of Scarborough, the group was able to pay rent for more and more business units, creating four workshops and six sea containers which comprise the charity today. In recent times, the World Health Organisation has stipulated guidelines for creating wheelchairs and this has seen the development of the chair design in order to comply. Cerebral Palsy experts were brought in to advise on cushioning and the group involves physiotherapists, occupational therapists and a network of health professionals worldwide to ensure chairs are correctly fitted to individuals. The key difference in the wheelchairs created is that they are adjustable – they grow as the child grows. One chair can

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

see a child through from 4 years old to 16, with support from local physiotherapists to help parents adjust them properly. This is unique, quite literally a world-first and has brought congratulations from the World Health Organisation. In developing countries where health-care is poor or nonexistent, these chairs mean that little children around the world no longer have to be carried or sit on the ground and they each have a knitted rug and a teddy of their own. To do this just once would have been an achievement, but Wheelchairs for Kids have done this over 40,000 times, all over the world. It’s no wonder that the Hillarys Yacht Club Tuesday Group choose to support such a cause. Wheelchairs for Kids currently produce, on average, 3,000 to 3,500 wheelchairs each year with volunteers working 10 months of the year. However, the workshop has the capacity to manufacture many more wheelchairs than it currently does and is only limited by the financial ability to purchase the materials and components to build the wheelchairs. If you would like to help, please visit www.wheelchairsforkids.org. HYC’s Tuesday Group of volunteers are an invaluable asset to the Club, taking responsilibtiy for ensuring Compass Magazine reaches your doorstep as well as holding their own social get-togethers and supporting Club events. They are a friendly, caring group of Members and welcome newcomers to their group. To learn how you can get involved, please call the Club on 9246 2833 or email admin@hillarysyachtclub.com.au. With thanks to Wheelchairs for Kids for providing background information and for the provision of images. CLUB EVENTS

New Year’s Eve It was a Retro start to 2019 and the amazingly popular Perth band 80’s Inc. did a fantastic job of transporting us back in time, keeping the dance floor full all night. Our members and their guests kept the theme alive with some great 1980’s outfits - view the photos if you dare in our ‘Through the Porthole’ section on page 18. It really was one of the best nights of the year and some Members told us it was the best New Year’s Eve event at the Club to date! Massive thanks and gratitude must go to our Chefs and service staff who gave up their own new year’s celebrations to ensure we all had great time - we may have caught them dancing in the kitchen once or twice!

Valentine’s Day Many of HYC’s love birds enjoyed a scrumptious three course meal while Jhoe Mura set the scene with his amazing vocals. It was a full house and a buzzing restaurant with great feedback on the night for the Chefs.

Coming Up... We look forward to seeing you and your guests at our upcoming events. St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and is always a popular event - we’re looking forward to a full dance floor and some tasty Irish food on the buffet! April will see us host our annual New Members’ Dinner where all Members are invited to enjoy dinner and learn more about how to get involved in the various activities within the Club. Before we know it, we’ll be into May, celebrating Mother’s Day and some of the annual dinners for our Sections. Be sure to book nice and early!

Know your skipper

Laraine Brindle

Following a childhood of family recreation being in, on or underwater, Laraine first experienced sailing in 1968 with a locally designed and built small catamaran whilst working in Darwin in her late teens. Later, back in Perth, whilst at University she purchased a Hornet and sailed regularly on the Swan River. Much in keeping with her achievements at HYC, Laraine held the 1975 World Best Female Skipper in a Hornet Championship held in Perth (she was the only female skipper). Following return from work in UK in 1982 Laraine briefly crewed in FSC keel boat races including the Fremantle to Geraldton Race but by the mid-1980’s family and business intervened and she ceased sailing. However her love of water-associated activities led her into windsurfing and particularly kayaking including white water and coastal kayaking which included the Avon Descent and trips from Coral Bay to Exmouth, Shark Bay and around the Burrup Peninsula and most of the rivers of the Southwest. With the arrival of more freedom that retirement ensures, the dream of getting back to sailing became a reality when, as a result of a chance conversation

with fellow Toodyay residents, Kerry and Maree Lewis, who agreed to nominate her, Laraine joined HYC. First crewing on Sally Malay and enjoying their camaraderie, but with the intention always of purchasing her own boat, she first purchased the Viking Sublime and thus began her tentative feel for skippering a keel boat. For more “live aboard” comfort, Anastasia was purchased in April 2018 and Laraine, whilst being involved in the Summer Race Season, intends to gain experience for future cruising trips.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT This month has been busy with the Pot of Gold Ocean Race and hosting 18 of the WA Ocean Racing Fleet. Congratulations to those that assisted. The Dash for Cash was also well supported by the HYC Keel fleets. There are two weekends of Ocean Racing - the Rottnest Races and the Mindarie Races - to be held in March. The competition is close in all divisions. The dinghy division continues to show growth with the green optimist sailors recently graduating into the Intermediate division, paving the way for our new green sailors to start their racing careers. Those who commenced sailing Lasers in the school holidays are now joining in with our Thursday training and Saturday racing. The Laser and Optimist State Championships will be conducted on the March long weekend. We expect 10 HYC sailors in each championship and we look forward to celebrating their success with them! Good luck to all our sailors for the last part of our summer racing season.

School Holiday Courses During the December/January school holiday courses we had 148 children complete a course. This is a great number of students that provides us with a solid starting point for our April school holiday courses, where they can develop their skills even further.

Schools During term-time, our Training department has a focus on school programs. With over 100 students booked in to complete their Recreational Skippers Ticket in the next semester, we are now WA’s leading yacht club for providing RST courses to schools.  Chris Kelly

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm

Weight Retrievals Just what do those divers do when they dive in the HYC Marina? And why do they do it??

Jetties N through to parts of R are equipped with 40kg weights that assist in the stabilisation of vessels once they are penned. Two of these weights are positioned at the bow and two at the stern and are connected via a drop chain with a D shackle. During the normal weather cycles of wind and surge, the D shackle wears through, causing the weight to drop off and come to rest on the silty bottom of the ocean floor. HYC replaces these weights for the pen owner and the Dive Section’s mission (should we choose to accept it) is to reclaim these weights off the marina floor and return them to HYC for re-use. After a life hanging in the water column, these weights, together with the attached barnacles, might weigh in excess of 60kg!

20 Compass March 2019 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

How do we do this? The Dive Section has engineered a crane which is attached to the kick rails (to stop the crane falling into the water). Two divers find a weight, one diver attaches a stainless lift wire to the weight, while the other diver sends a float ball to the surface. The surface crew attach the crane lift cable to the float and signal the dive crew to pull down the crane cable and hook attachment. Once the crane cable is attached to the lift wire, the signal is given to lift the weight.

Sound simple? Unfortunately not! As can be seen by the photos, visibility is one concern. On the day these photos were taken, the in-water visibility before entry was less than 2 metres. Once in the water, visibility

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

reduced to 1.5 metres. Divers need to be experienced in low visibility navigation and be very comfortable in not being able to see very much. Further, divers need to be able to move through the water without stirring the bottom sediment, while maintaining a constant course to the next pylon. And literally on top of that, divers need to always

be aware of surface operations and quickly vacate the lift area in case of a lift failure. Finally, the weight is lifted onto the jetty and barnacles are removed, with all waste being returned to the ocean. This is where the ground crew come into their own. Wearing safety glasses, enclosed footwear, hats, long sleeved shirts and sunscreen, the weights are cleaned of barnacles, then transported to the weight storage area behind the sailors start platform. These guys do good work! A note of caution for jetty users: As the waste from the weights can include dangerous marine critters such as blue ringed octopus, it is advisable for all jetty users to wear enclosed footwear during retrieval operations. Thank you to June and Steve Sullivan for the photos.  James Leesue

DINGHY The 2019 summer sailing is well underway in HYC’s Dinghy section. With New Year’s celebrations barely complete, some of our sailors and supporters made the trip to Tasmania for Laser and Optimist Nationals in January. Not a small trip by any standards, our sailors represented HYC and Team WA proudly. We are pleased to share the thoughts from some of them…

“Thank you to HYC for supporting me at nationals in Tasmania. I had a good time and learnt a lot. I learnt a lot about rapidly changing wind and tides, and changing my sailing during the race. The best part of the trip was sailing with the other HYC sailors in teams racing. Although we didn’t do so well in teams racing, we had fun. The worst part of the trip was all the abandoned races. Also thank you to my mum and dad for supporting my sailing.” Bradley Dick

“My name is Ben Graham and I am 12. Hobart was my second Opi Nationals and first in the Open Fleet. I had lots of fun hanging out with all my WA mates. In the beginning I felt very nervous because there were so many boats and good sailors from other states in my fleet. Some days we experienced light winds where we had to wait out on the water for a long time and other days it was gusting up to 30 knots, this was the most challenging time for me, to keep my boat flat and anticipate those gusts. Hobart has lots of hills. When out on the water, I made many new friends and I watched what the really good sailors were doing. From the event I

I would like to thank Hillarys Yacht Club and HYC coaches for their support before and during the event.” Well done Bradley, Ben, Sam, Zen and Bryce! Back at Hillarys, we have begun to enjoy the traditional summer wind patterns on the race course, especially using our start boat, Mirage. Thank you to the spectator crafts that supported our Cow Rock Race. Light winds created some fickle conditions before the sea breeze set in and some new names will appear on the trophy this year. We are pleased to be joined on the race course by recent participants of the Tackers and Start Sailing school holiday programs, sailing Optimist and Lasers. New faces are always welcome in support roles ashore or on the water. Our sailors have also represented HYC at the RPYC mini series, including our gallant 125 crew, and as Compass goes to print, at both Optimist and Laser State championships. The season still has plenty of sailing for us, with Summer Series races well into March and the Little Island Race with Sail Easter in April.  Tim Tucker & Warren Dick

KEELBOAT RACING

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

The mid-summer keel racing season has been dominated by a weather pattern of very strong southerlies without the usual morning easterly causing a couple race days to be cancelled. Unfortunately Hard Evidence lost her mast in strong winds and it will take some time before she will be racing again, meanwhile Des Riley has adapted well to sailing Xtreme.

Cockburn Sound Regatta Six yachts from HYC were spread across three Jib and Main fleets in the Cockburn Regatta between Christmas and New Year including Deckchairs Overboard, Whispering Jack (3rd in JAM 2), Lamotrek, Low Flying Duck, Sheer Magic and the pick of them being Blue Chip who won their section, JAM 3. Jib and Main meant they were fully rested for the social scene and hospitality of The Cruising Yacht Club.

Marmion Reef Race Sally Malay revelled in the stiff breeze that filled in coming in a whopping 16 minutes ahead of second placed Perle on handicap with Whispering Jack third in a division one fleet of nine yachts. In division two it was a much closer tussle with Farrouk ahead of Sheer Magic by just 12 seconds and two minutes ahead of Tropical Itch after 4 hours of sailing. Fastest in division two was Covert Operation. Comfortably Numb was first and fastest in division three with new owners Tim and Katie Tucker second on Show Me and Laraine Brindle on Anastasia was third. Volant, Helga and Quicksilver beat to windward in the Dash for Cash

Chris Grant Memorial Race

17 Mar: Mindarie Ocean Races 30/31 Mar: Rottnest Run 25 Apr: Diggers Cup 25 May: Keel Dinner

Chris would have been pleased with the turn-out of twenty five yachts in conditions in which Pandora thrived: a twenty knot southerly. His wife Sandy and family were there to celebrate the memory of Chris and to present pennants. In division one, the pennants went to Sally Malay, with Perle second and Mulberry third. In division two, the places went to the Viking yachts; Volant first followed by Blue Chip and Helga. Amazingly Blue Chip and Helga actually crossed the line together, equal first for the Viking Cup. Deckchairs Overboard was first in division three with Comfortably Numb second and Anastasia third.

Dash For Cash What a dash for Sally Malay in division one finishing half an hour before second placed Whispering Jack with Bad Habits coming in third. “He who would be last shall be first came true for Sheer Magic in division two when finishing eighth over the line and first on handicap. Equal second on handicap were Panache and Helga. Deckchairs Overboard, with a perfect start and a double reefed mainsail, never looked back scoring a first and fastest in division three. Echo was second and Salamander, skippered by new owner George Nichols, was third. Rushmere with new owner Louise Harvey at the helm battles with Sensei in the Ladies Skippers race.

Ladies Skippers Race In a week of strong winds it was a contrast to have an ideal 12 knot breeze for the Ladies Skippers race. In division one, Chelsea Bradford skippered dad’s yacht Whispering Jack to win on handicap with line honours going to Caroline Weekes also on dad’s yacht Mulberry who was second. The third Hillarys yacht was Sally Malay with Sarah Liddiard at the helm. Tony Waymouth handed the helm of Sheer Magic to Leanne Moiti in division two who won on handicap. Lana

Calkins skippered Panache for second place and Gail Riley was third on Xtreme. Elissa Graham kept Covert Operation’s reputation intact as a regular line honours winner. Rita James jumped ship from Panache to enable Deckchairs Overboard to start; sailing away for fastest time and second on handicap whilst Sally Simmonds won the race on Sensei with Alicia Tucker skippering Show Me into third place.  John Bird

CRUISING IN COMPANY

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm 16 Mar: Longreach Bay Cruise

Rockingham Australia Day Cruise The Rockingham cruise from HYC to TCYC was enjoyed by 13 Cruising in Company yachts. Aqua Cabana, Banco, del la mer, Eaglehearts, Georgia, Panache, Perle, Sailfar, Soiree, Vaya Con Dios, Vela, Sana II and Zest enjoyed the sail to Rockingham with many leaving before 6am a day earlier, to make use of a more easterly breeze. At 6pm on Australia Day, all cruisers boarded Eaglehearts to enjoy a BYO dinner and drinks to share. After some great conversation and a sumptuous feast we all watched the magnificent fireworks explode from the end of the Rockingham jetty. Many thanks to Nick, our gracious host, for the evening. Next morning saw us all at Spill the Beans cafe at Palm Beach jetty for breakfast and coffees. As the weather was wonderful, some enjoyed a game or two of Finska on the beach ,while others took to the water on kayaks and SUP boards for most of the day. In the early evening we all gathered at The Cruising Yacht Club for pre-dinner drinks and dinner. On Monday the Cruising in Company yachts headed back to Hillarys in very nice sailing conditions. The next cruise to Rockingham TCYC is in March and we are looking forward to another wonderful weekend.

ANGLING

UPCOMING EVENTS

Welcome to the first HYC Angling report for 2019 and we trust everyone had a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. There are some great angling events for members and guests coming up with the Bluewater Classic, AAA championship and we are hosting our own Harbour Classic with great prizes to be won.

December Boat Competition 2018 The December fishing competition was postponed due to inclement weather, however we had 20 keen anglers and being so close to Christmas, it was great to see such a good turnout. 17 men and three ladies competed with no juniors. Well done to Men’s winner Aiden Rinney and Ladies winner, Julie Loran. The Fish of the Competition were Ryan McDiarmid’s 9kg Snapper, Aiden Rinney’s 5.2kg Samson fish and Allan Aiden Rinney McDiarmid’s 0.73kg King George. Aiden Rinney won the $20 chock wheel and the Lucky Angler prize of $100 went to Julie Loran.

Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm 17 Mar: Boat Fishing Comp. 23 Mar: AAA State Titles 30 Mar: HYC Rottnest Run 13 Apr: Harbour Classic 16 Apr: Junior Fishing Clinic 21 Apr: Boat Fishing Comp. 19 May: Boat Fishing Comp.

January Boat Competition 2019 The first fishing competition of the year got off to a flying start with great weather and 17 anglers: 14 men, two ladies and one junior doing battle to win the HYC trophy. The Men’s winner, with 5 species, was Ian McCall with the ladies win going to Julie Loran with 4 species. Congratulations also to Ashley McDiarmid, who won the juniors competition. The Fish of the Competition was Julie’s 2.86kg Dhufish and 1.00kg King George Whiting, Ashley’s 0.50kg Breaksea Cod and 0.57kg Skippy and Ian picked up a nice 0.56kg Flounder. Ryan McDiarmid won the Lucky Angler $100 prize so the McDiarmid family had a successful day!

January Junior Fishing Clinic Another successful Junior Fishing Clinic was held in the January school holidays with the maximum number of kids allowed on the club boats! 24 youngsters took part in the three day fishing clinic which comprises of all aspects of fishing including tackle, knot tying, beach casting and fishing on the club boat, with a species competition on third day resulting in lots of prizes, followed by a sausage sizzle. The first fishing day was postponed due bad weather and the kids were eager to go fishing on the Club boats. Many fish were caught from a combination of six species: Flathead, Goat Fish, Herring, Skippy, King George Whiting and Sand Whiting. Whilst all the kids with the biggest species received prizes, the best ‘fisherkid’ was Zac Davies with the most species followed by George Kay and Trent Johnson. Zac also received an additional prize for the biggest flathead.

Beach Fishing Competition The beach competition in January was held in Busselton, providing a trip away for the weekend. Although there was a wind warning, 19 anglers took part with 13 men and six ladies fishing. The fish were not playing in the wind and few fish were caught. Ron Thornton won the mens competition,

beating Lucas Pohl by just 9 grams! Ruby McGrady won the Ladies competition. All the competitors enjoyed the weekend away and hope to do something similar next year. A big thank you goes to The Naturaliste Game & Sport Fishing Club (GSFC) who kindly hosted the beach competition and allowed HYC to utilise their premises for the weigh-in as well as providing a sausage sizzle. Ruby McGrady kindly donated her winning trophy to the Naturaliste Sport Fishing Club (GSFC) in appreciation of their hospitality. The was no winner for the Biggest Squid as the wind and squid weren’t playing. After the wine prize was raffled, Peter McGrady will be enjoying a nice bottle of red.

February Boat Competition The February boat competition went ahead after a blustery start to the weekend which saw the Bluewater Classic postponed until the next day and the water turned out quite sloppy from mid-morning. Never-the-less, 17 anglers took part, being 12 men, four ladies and one junior. Bryan Norris’ 5 species saw him take first place in the men’s competition with Annette Kirwan winning the ladies side. A nice Snapper and a Dhuey were caught but the Fish of the Competition was a 3.46kg Samson, caught by Aiden Rinney. Julie Loran was our Lucky Angler for February, taking home the $100 prize. MARINA FACILITIES Electrolysis 101

Shore Power Earth

Boat owners are often concerned about the effects of electrolysis on their pride and joy. This article provides information on the three most common causes and what can be done to protect against electrolysis. The most common Electrolysis at work cause of electrolysis issues on boats comes from the use of dissimilar metals in a salt water environment. Examples include: Cast iron motor block; stainless bolts; mild steel engine bed; bronze skin fittings in a Glass or Composite Hull; zinc anchor and chain in an aluminum locker; scrap copper ends on aluminum plate. To combat Electrolysis, sacraficial anodes are bonded to all the metallic: • Underwater fittings • Main Engines and Gear box coolers • Skin fittings and sea cocks • P and Y brackets • Shafts and Rudders • Generators

Bonding Bonding consists of the funny little wires that run around in your boat that appear to do nothing. These wires are part of the bonding system: THE BONDING SYSTEM All the metallic systems in contact with salt water (inside and outside the hull) should be Bonded to the Anodes and to the negative terminal of the battery. In many boats the Shore Power earth is also connected to the bonding system.

The next most common cause of Electrolysis results from stray voltage coming via the Shore Power Earth. The solution is to fit an Electrolysis Blocker. “I’ve had my boat for years and never had an electrolysis Blocker. Theres nothing wrong with my boat” How lucky are you! This doesn’t mean your boat won’t develop a problem. Circumstances around your boat can change. Boats around you can develop problems which can be transferred to your boat by the Shore Power Earth. If you suddenly develop problems and have checked the bonding and it is good, it is most likely you have stray currents on the Shore Power Earth.

Electrolysis eating through a hull

The Shore Power Earth is common to every Shore power outlet in the marina, hence every boat connected to shore power on the jetties. This is considered such a problem that Blockers are mandatory on all new boats and highly recommended to be retrofitted. Note: Blockers must be fitted by a qualified electrician. The third and relatively uncommon problem can be caused by a broken wire or defective piece of equipment lying in the bilge. A blackened or discoloured prop or props is often a sign this has happened and there is a problem. This is a brief outline of electrolysis. It varies with different hull materials, however the principle remains the same. Don’t be scared, most people are capable of upgrading their own bonding systems. If in doubt, a comprehensive test can be done to ascertain if your vessel has a problem. This test is done with a silver chloride cell checking the voltage of each metal fitting on the vessel.  David Mills
