COMMODORE’S REPORT

EVENTS The Sorrento Quay Boardwalk’s “Launch of Summer Fireworks Show” literally went off with a bang and whilst signifying the end of 2015 it set the stage for the beginning of the festive season. Thousands of locals filled every corner of the marina with our club being no exception.

HYC was at maximum capacity, a rare happening. Car parks were full, boats lit up our jetties and our bars were jam packed with members and friends soaking up the atmosphere of the much-anticipated fireworks.

The year came to a close with HYC’s New Year’s Eve party, which also went off with a bang. Members enjoyed the “Hollywood Glamour” themed event, many “dressed to impress” to say farewell to 2015 and welcome in 2016. I am told it was a fantastic night with a few saucy stories rumoured!

Over the Christmas break HYC members and avid sailors Neil Harrison (Helm) and Ryan Keefe (Bow) competed in the grueling Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on “Not a Diamond” a Beneteau First 40 and under dramatic and challenging weather conditions they did incredibly well to finish 12th overall on IRC – hope they were flying a HYC burgee (not while they were racing though).

Whilst they endured the cold and extreme weather, we were blessed with some awesome boating conditions for the first few weeks of 2016, seeing a large percentage of our pens empty with members taking advantage of quality “on water” time. In addition, patronage of our bars and dining facilities were in full swing. February is shaping up even better with a heat wave upon us as I write this article.

BRING A FRIEND And with saying that, what a great time to show some of your friends just how great our Club is and invite them for a meal and a few cold drinks in the Members Bar or the recently refurbished Wet Bar. Just in case you haven’t noticed the Wet Bar is looking fantastic with a great outlook, vibe and new large screen, it’s the place to be, particularly on a Sunday afternoon with the live music.

CLUB STAFF Welcome back to Shaun Bradley who after a motor vehicle accident, which kept him away from the Club for several months, has returned to work and resumed creating culinary delight. We are all very glad you’re back.

Desiree Ruchet has finally given birth to healthy baby boy called Sebastian. I understand both she and baby are doing well. While Desiree is certainly missed by us here at the Club, I understand she is loving being a

mum. We hope she is getting some sleep.

Ever popular Wet Bar favourite Ron Searle retired recently after carefully nurturing Pinky’s from almost its inception to wonderful place it is today and the popularity it enjoys. It has also been very pleasing to see Ron back at the Club as a guest enjoying the company of the many friends he has made during his time with HYC.

NEW MEMBERS Normally the first Monday of each month sees either of our two Vice Commodores Barry Jewson and Neil Harrison or myself conduct new member interviews.

It is only a short introduction to some of the services and protocols of the Club and why we hold a formal new members evening once a year in April. The “New Members Night” is a very informative night giving members a chance to experience a comprehensive presentation from all sections of the Club. The night serves to connect members to all the possibilities the sections of the club have on offer. Keep an eye out for the invitation.

SUMMER SAILING Congratulations to our HYC sailors for recently winning the annual Northcoast Series. For many years now HYC and Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club have competed in a race series separate of their respective race days over the summer season.

CLUB FACILITIES I am often asked about the pen waiting list which is currently closed and sometimes a topic of much discussion. For the record, it is a slow process and maybe only a few become available each year. It is carefully managed to best suit the clubs interests and that of the members. More pens transfer to new occupants because they purchase the vessel in the pen.

Many of these purchases are made by members from the closed waitlist. I was recently pleased to see a long term member (of some 20 years) whom after patiently waiting for 6 years and having worked their way up the waiting list to finally arrive last month. A long wait but worth it.

The initiative to secure the Fuel Facility is now providing real dividends with more competitive pump prices and a better than expected surplus to the bottom line. The strategy to expand HYC’s footprint by further developing the water space adjacent the Fuel Jetty remains a “wish list” item with negotiation of the seabed lease currently at the mercy of the authorities. Every effort is being made to secure this opportunity and hopefully we will see the provision of 19 additional pens to accommodate member demand.

The highlight of the year for any Commodore is the Commodore’s Ball. This red carpet glamour event boasts a reputation for fabulous dining and live music and some serious fun and is a date not to miss. Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Preparations are well underway for this year. I hope to see many of you there.

STAND UP PADDLE

It is said; “we often take for granted the very things that most deserve our thanks and gratitude” Nothing runs truer than this quote when you consider the enormous amount of work our volunteers do for the Club. I often have the pleasure of attending section presentations and the most common thread existing in all of them other than the camaraderie, is the acknowledgement of the work of the volunteers. The formal “thank you to volunteers ” often gets lost in the repetition of the statement over and over in every presentation. But the truth of the mater is that we simply cannot operate as we do with out the generosity of such people. These are the people who seem to thrive on all work and no pay – an extraordinary group of individuals deserving of sincere recognition. With that in mind, on behalf of the Club thank you for so quietly and unselfishly going about your business.

Your Club is always looking for ways to extend the opportunity for members to participate in “on water” activities and a recent trial day for those wishing to try Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) proved very successful.

This global craze is said to be the fastest growing water sport in the world and whether you want to race, surf or just cruise on one of these boards HYC will have a come and try SUP n Sizzle day 20 March 2016 (weather permitting) – We hope to generate sufficient interest to create a SUP group who will meet on a regular basis to enjoy paddling into some great waves or explore the reef just off Little Island or maybe just do it for the fitness and core strength workout, either way watch out for the flyer!!!

Thank you to all those members who have supported the Club during the summer and holiday periods. The activity around the Club, New Years Eve and the vacant pens during the school holidays certainly proved many were

Food and beverage operations have remained strong with attendance numbers strengthening while on the other side the tightening economy sees the average spend by those in attendance reduced. The same is being experienced in business throughout the area and the wider community.

Similar reductions are also being experienced in the functions and boatlifting operations of the Club.

Function activity and more specifically corporate activity have reduced their size and needs, reducing overall spend while managing and reducing their expenses.

Vessels are only having the immediate and required maintenance needs completed leaving the finer or more detailed needs for later times.

It is important to recognise the pricing of services within the lifting facility are at competitive and affordable rates. Services can always be less but then quality also becomes a factor. Antifouling of a vessel, as an example, could be cheaper if a cheaper brand of paint is used, but if that paint or its effectiveness is of poorer quality then you are getting what you pay for. During these economic times owners may seek a cheaper option but it does not always provide the most economical or beneficial outcome required.

Although these changes and variations are occurring, the activity of members, boatlifting operations and function bookings remain busy and still positive for the Club.

MEMBER LOYALTY It remains true that the more a member attends the Club the more they save and benefit from their membership. Our restaurant meals and beverages remain affordable supporting the more you spend the more you save. The expected loyalty programs, being developed for the new membership year, will see members rewarded for their loyalty and attendances at and within facilities of the Club.

If you are a member who owns a vessel and utilises the fuel facility, this loyalty is also rewarded with a rebate scheme which benefits the members.

FUEL USE & PRICING The price of fuel within the harbour has always been dearer than that available at fuel stations on the streets. The main reason for this is the total volume

of fuel dispensed from the harbour facility is only 3% of the volumes fuel stations deliver to vehicles in our surrounding areas. Accordingly the cost price available to us is higher than that received by the fuel stations.

Additional to this and also included in the bowser price of fuel within the harbour is a Department of Transport ‘wharfage fee’, recently increased from half a cent per litre to five cents per litre. Were this fee not increased the price of fuel would be five cents cheaper but likely still above that of the surrounding fuel stations.

The bowser price has dropped both here at the harbour and the stations on the street, but the fact that our cost price is higher and our sell price as low as is, but still above that on the street suggests there is good profit margins being gained by stations especially when they are able to sell fuel for less than a dollar in the current market.

When utilising the facility, it is important to be aware, the operating terminal requests a selection for the amount of fuel required, upon that selection the terminal seeks a pre authorisation from your credit card provider for that amount and the fuel is dispensed.

Should the total amount selected not be taken, the provider has assumed it was the whole amount, and that amount then debited from your account. When confirmation of the amount is received by the provider, the balance is refunded to your account. This process is usually completed within 24 to 48 hours. Please be aware of this when using the facility.

Hopefully in the future, as we develop the facility, the price and the fuel types available will further benefit members.

JESS Tour 2016 Established in 1988, the Junior Exchange Sailing Scheme (JESS) is a youth sailing initiative administered under the auspices of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. Each year a team of six sailors from across WA is selected to travel to Europe to compete in regattas.

While initially in 420's, the last few years has seen a transition into the 29er class. In preparing for the JESS tour the young sailors learn about planning, budgeting, fundraising and teamwork, whilst involved in intensive sailing and physical training.

The 2016 Tour is the first year in which an all female team will participate. The girls will compete in regattas including Keil Week in Germany, the European Championships in Norway and the IDM in Medemblik, the Netherlands. The team this year consists of: Kaiella Taylor KBSC & Laura Carmichael HYC Holly Hunt MBSC & Sarah Hales DBSC Farrah Corrigan RFBYC & Sophie Townes RFBYC The JESS selection process is open to all WA sailors from all clubs.

Designed to ensure that those accepted into the team have demonstrated they are worthy, compatible, are of exemplary character and, importantly, are committed to the whole program, the tour relies on teamwork from both sailors and their families in order to raise the balance of the funds dictated by the budget. This is the only way the tour can happen. Although never an easy task, each of the preceding years' families have undertaken the challenge and succeeded.

The concept of the JESS Program belongs to Malcolm (Huck) Scott, a silver medalist in the Melbourne Olympic Games.

He competed as forward hand in the 12 sq. metre “Falcon” skippered

by Rolly Tasker.

After Huck gave up competitive sailing, he took up coaching and then dedicated 20 years of his life to the advancement of junior sailing. He led many junior teams to compete interstate and overseas at national and international levels. It was during these experiences that he came to the realization that there was a need for young sailors from this State to be exposed to international competition on a regular basis.

Thus the concept of JESS was born - a team of 6 young sailors under the guidance of a coach manager to prepare and undertake a regatta tour overseas annually.

To enable the program to run business sponsorship and community support are required; all funds for the JESS tour are raised by the participants and their families. For more information on assisting with sponsorship, donations and fundraising, please contact HYC.

HYC JESS Representative Laura Carmichael Laura was influenced to start sailing after growing up watching her dad and grandad sail. She began sailing at the age of 13 through the Hillarys Yacht Club’s ‘learn to sail’ program. Laura then crewed for her dad in a Tasar and finished second overall in the club championship for 2013/14.

She then moved into a Laser 4.7 competing in the 2014/15 Laser Nationals ond placed third in the Walpole In the Trees Regatta where she also got to experience being a sheet hand on a Sharpie. In late 2015 Laura got the opportunity to crew on a 29er at RFBYC and hasn’t looked back. New to the class, Laura is looking forward to developing her skills and gaining experience competing in large fleets through the experience offered by the JESS program.

Tomato Growing Competition

Always looking for some new and exciting venture, the HYC “Fat Boys” have again set the standard for innovation at HYC (cough). This year Rod McPhee set the challenge, to see who could produce “the best tomato” in the ludicrously short period of 5 weeks.

The rules (or lack thereof) were set, the start gun was fired and off we trundled (well some of us did) to the garden for a torrid test of innovation, skill, guile and pure cunning. 5 weeks later, with excitement amongst the boys rising to fever pitch, the boys gathered for the big day in Pinky’s Bar. To ensure impartiality and integrity (?) in the process, Chris Grant (former Commodore) was usurped into the position as Head Judge. The first challenge for Chris was to develop a plausible criteria for judging, finally settling on; Volume, Colour, Shape, Presentation, and most importantly, The X Factor”.

The results were in; and although not part of the formal Judging criteria the following entrants were worthy of special mention.

Smallest Tomato – John Bird walked it in.

Most Tomatoes – Eric Lay; complete with certification from his wife and Coles supermarket.

Biggest Cheat – Ron Marian (provided a toffee apple red, painted green tomato) and Tony Sheehan who had the gall to bring his tomato bush, (which was clearly incapable of producing anything) to the judging table. It was purchased only hours before from Waldecks.

The Final results and leading contenders in each section were as follows; Volume – Ron Marian and Peter Dearle Colour – Dennis Loran & John Bird Shape – Dennis Loran Presentation – Eric lay (in a jewellery box) X Factor – Dennis Loran The Winner of the HYC inaugural tomato growing contest, with an extraordinary 23 (less than 50%) points out of 50 is ………………. Dennis Loran.

Neil Harrison

Probably older than the 50 years Neil has been sailing, joined HYC in 2011 after being a member at ORSSC for 18 months.

Family Background Married to Wendy, “one of the most understanding sailing brides I have ever met”; two children, Todd and Adam, 24 and 18 respectively. Neil’s father and older brother sailed every weekend so sailing began very early for Neil in Adelaide.

Occupation Neil has been the GM of MM Electrical for 14 years.

Yachts and Achievements Neil began as crew in a Holdfast Trainer, similar to a Sabot, then made the transition to skipper with Rainbows and Sharpies, and with a good crew won State Championships. The next step was in the eighties with the 505’s winning back to back Australian championships and competing in world championships in San Francisco for a 12th placing and in Cork, Ireland for 7th place. For a taste of the Olympic classes, Neil and long-time crew/friend Nick Paterson went into the Flying Dutchman (a la Rolly Tasker) and despite a second placing at the Nationals, the trials in the pre-Olympic regatta in Korea did not go as well. Re-grouping in the nineties Neil went back to sailing for fun, still managing to pick up two Australian titles in Sharpies.

Regrets Not getting Wendy out on the water sooner, otherwise very few regrets.

A ten-year hiatus from sailing due to the birth of the “little tackers” and a move to Perth saw racing resume from ORSSC in a Sonata 6.7 called Runamuck. Finally Neil and Wendy joined HYC, and have successfully sailed Deckchairs Overboard, winning the Club Championship last year. Neil and Wendy also sail a Tasar, A Day at the Races, with the dinghy fleet at HYC and in regattas.

Special Events Being able to compete all over the world in international events such as the Sydney to Hobart (last two years), the Fastnet Race and Cowes Week in the UK and locally in the Fremantle to Albany return race have been pretty special. Highlights for Neil would have to include marrying Wendy, sailing with a great crew, meeting sailors of the calibre of Paul Elvestrom (who remembered Neil 4 years later) and being part of the wonderful sailing fraternity.

HYC Perspective Neil enjoys the warm and friendly egalitarian atmosphere of HYC where skippers, crew, family and friends and visitors are made to feel welcome. Currently Vice-Commodore following a stint as Rear-Commodore Sailing, Neil is very supportive of all sections and especially Keel and Dinghy.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

Training has been very busy in the first three months of this year. We have launched the Tackers Program and are now marketing the next courses. We are planning to have a Tackers presence at the forthcoming Hillarys Boat Show on April 9 showcasing . We are planning for lots of interest from under 12 year olds in the northern suburbs.

School holiday courses during the summer school holiday were well supported. Five new instructors have been trained to take us forward for the next few years. Our April school holiday courses are just around the corner and filling fast. Be sure to book to avoid disappointment.

There have been two courses conducted for the National Power Boat Handling certificate. This has been well received. Further courses will be conducted as required. Please contact us if we can assist.

Part of our department’s role is conducting regattas.

We have now conducted the 2016 Pot of Gold regatta.

There were 272 sailors who competed. There were 23 boats entered in the Offshore race around Rottnest to Hillarys, 17 boats in the Dash for Cash to Scarborough Beach and 55 Dinghies. Hillarys Yacht Club sailors were successful in winning the Division 3 Mark Pitt Mulberry and Division 4 Ryan Binedell’s Low Flying Duck and The Optimist Gold Catherine Pile, Optimist Silver Bryce Taylor and the Laser 4.7 Jackson Porter.

The fuel cut off to the engine was in the engine room making it very difficult to locate and turn off. All of the plastic fittings had melted making it even harder to make decisions. The boat was anchored and towed into the Marina.

Fishing, Diving and “The Bitter End” I was recently invited to go fishing on a Tuesday, which was fantastic, seeing as I had recently semi-retired. This was the sort of thing that a bloke of my semi-retired status should get used to. So off we went, Andy Cassidy, his old mate Kent and myself, all on board Andy’s six metre Catamaran “Andicat “.

Well the day started very well, I had brought along a nice cuttlefish for bait [sorry Madam Lash] and we had powered out to the north west of Rotto and BANG first drop a Dhufish. Unfortunately, it was undersize and the day went on like that with five undersize Dhuies, one undersize pink snapper, lots of rascally wrasse, finishing the day with one unlucky Breaksea Cod and one Foxfish. By the time we had completed our days fishing, we had circumnavigated the island, trolling for that elusive mackerel, but the fishing gods were not smiling. What we did find though was some very interesting walls that looked very dive able, if not returning many table fish.

The following weekend, I planned an exploratory diving trip to some of these drop offs and along with 14 adventurous divers and two guests, the dive section took the club 45 footer “Balaton Jack” to investigate these interesting spots. Of the 14 divers, eight were certified as advanced divers or better and so these

eight completed the first dive rotation on a wall at the South West end of Rotto, the top was at 20 metres and the bottom got down to 30 metres. The dive gods were with us on this day as there was a gentle breeze from the north west and the seas were less than a metre.

Giant strides off the marlin board and we descended into water clarity that was later described as EPIC. At 30 metres you could see the transducer on the hull of BJ. The following photos will give credence to the magic that can happen underwater. Many thanks to June Sullivan who had an interaction with a foraging octopus and thanks to Mike Lee for his lovely shot of an underwater grotto complete with sponges, coral and bullseyes.

At the end of the dive, reports of many crayfish being caught but released due to being in berry or tar spotted were prolific. Only one cray was kept from the first dive.

Off we went to our second dive site, shallower this time, near to the Strickland Bay leads, which we call the Strickland Bay caves. The six divers that did not do the deep dive went in for the second dive rotation and the sea just calmed off. While the first eight divers were waiting their turn for the third dive rotation, we discussed the deep dive and it was mentioned by one person that there had been a large anchor, similar

in size to the one on BJ that was simply sitting on the ocean floor with a heap of chain attached. Too late we all cried, we had run out of deep bottom time, so we resolved to come back another day to retrieve the anchor if it still remained in situ. As all good boaties know, it ends bitterly when the skipper sees the “Bitter End” fly over the bow.

The second rotation of divers returned and the eight from the first dive started the third rotation. Everybody came back with stories of large rays, and plentiful fish life, however the crayfish were again hard to come by and only three were added to the catch.

In December and January some of our sailors took part in the Australian Championships for the Optimist, Laser, Contender and National 125 dinghy Classes.

Adam Brett took Third Place in the Contenders. Jonathan Pang and Marcus Fisk won First Place on Handicap and 7th outright in the National 125 regatta. Also some sailed in the Sydney to Hobart Race.

In January we sailed the Cow Rock trophy which has dinghies sailing north of the Boat Harbour just off beaches, to provide close viewing of all the action for the HYC member’s on anchored boats and yachts along the shoreline.

Our Saturday morning sailing is expected to see an increase in participants after the Christmas holiday period and also some new sailors from recent sailing courses.

Show Me and 30 Apr - Rottnest Race Low Flying Duck 21 May - Presentation Dinner had mixed results that included Bruce Ellery on Show Me the best with second in his JAM fleet. Great sailing conditions in the Sound and a fun-filled social life make this a popular regatta in the festive season.

Having settled the winners (Sally Malay, Pinta and Sana 11) of the first consistency series before Christmas, racing began in earnest for the second series in January.

Ryan Binedell set a scorching pace in Low Flying Duck however Des Riley in Hard Evidence sailed brilliantly to win easily on handicap in division one. Whilst Farrouk was fastest in division two, Pinta turned back the clock with another win in a very close race. Celebrations that day included a farewell to retiring barman Ron Searl whose cheery smile and friendly service over six years had endeared him to all members and particularly the Fat Boy cyclists who turn out each Wednesday afternoon. Thank you Ron.

HYC and ORSSC Skipper s in North Coast Series day was also in January and three races were held to compensate for a day lost due to bad weather. HYC dominated with Bad Habits, Perle, Sally Malay and Hard Evidence the best in division one whilst Farrouk was outstanding in division two with great support from Xtreme and Volant. The final race day in February also included three races and it was a different story with Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club winning the day however HYC had too big a lead and won the Series for the third consecutive season. Making the most of the light conditions, Ian Holder sailed Bad Habits exceptionally well for two wins and two fastest times on the final day clinching the title of the overall winner in division one, with Hard Evidence and Leda (ORSSC) close behind. In division two consistent performer Pinta finished ahead

of Farrouk and Dolken (ORSSC). Close links are being forged with the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club with some members belonging to both clubs, the recent interest in cruising together and of course the NCS. The end of the festive season is signalled by the sailing of the Australia Day races and in perfect conditions Kraken came out of hibernation to set fastest time in division one however the pennants went to Sandrine, Murphy’s Law and Seachange. In division two Xtreme achieved their inaugural first and fastest with Volant and Sublime taking home a pennant too. Comfortably Numb was also first and fastest in JAM. ■John Bird

While December was a quiet month with many members busy with family Christmas engagements, January has kicked the summer season off with a jam packed sailing calendar.

Firstly, though, John and Sue Bird hosted their first CIC Christmas party as Cruising Captains at their house, which was a fantastic night with plenty of delicious food and great company. They went to great lengths to create a festive atmosphere which gave many of us a chance to catch up with those members who had been unable to participate in recent cruises, and was a very relaxing way to get the season started.

Unfortunately, the next cruise on the calendar was a little less successful, with a howling southerly making the sail down to Fremantle for the night rather unappealing for many. Although it was only a small group, an enjoyable dinner at the Fremantle Sailing Club’s restaurant was still enjoyed by Brian & Rita, Robyn & Hugh and Fran & Rob. Longreach, ever a favourite with the CIC group, was

a far more popular weekend, despite it coinciding with the Icehouse concert at Rottnest, meaning that the island was jam packed with people and boats every which way you turned. This was a great weekend with 10 yachts participating. Drinks on Phil & Tina’s yacht, Vela, dinner at the Geordie Bay café, breakfast at the dome, and sundowners while listening to Icehouse from the beach are just some of the highlights.

The Rockingham cruise at the end of January was also a great success with five HYC yachts participating, as well as some yachts from Ocean Reef and Fremantle. The highlight of this weekend was a sail up to Pig Trough Bay at Garden Island, where the group revelled in chomping down on a feast befitting the name of the bay. The camaraderie between the yachts from the various clubs was enjoyed by all, with dinners at restaurants in Rockingham as well as Fremantle where the final night was spent in order to watch the Australia Day fireworks.

It is with great sadness that we pay tribute to one of our CIC members who recently passed away, Jan Hubble, wife of Brendon.

Jan lived for her family and was devoted to Brendon and her four boys (Simon, Jeremy, Andrew, and Dominic), along with her daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Very involved with her family, she ensured she attended significant milestones in her grandchildren’s lives even when they were living in diverse locations, such as Canberra and Hong Kong.

Regular camping holidays were a family highlight.

An active sailor, she participated as a lady skipper in yachting on the Swan with great success. Well known through Cruising in Company at Hillarys Yacht Club, Jan was a regular and enthusiastic participant in CiC activities, cruises and meetings.

With Brendon, they were Cruising Captains in 20022003. Their yacht, Vanina, was also very successful at the annual regattas held for Beneteau owners.

Jan was a respected and beautiful lady who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm Mar 19 - AAA Competition

NOVEMBER BOAT COMPETITION A good turnout of 21 anglers signed on with an encouraging weather report. The encouragement disappeared after 11.00 with an early sea breeze which made for very choppy seas.

At the well attended weigh in at 4.00pm, nine species were represented despite the demersal finfish closed season in place.

Of the three sub junior anglers, Charlie Lihou was the winner with three species and 35.940 points.

From the junior anglers, Aiden Rinney with three species was the winner and of the ladies, Ruby McGrady was the winner with three species and 35.166 points.

The men’s winner with four species and 46.858 points was Nick Fitt. Nick also wins the Jack Snoeren trophy which will be presented at the presentation night in 2016.

Winner of the wheel spin was Jake Speed with a pike.

NOVEMBER BEACH COMPETITION An early sea breeze deterred some anglers, leaving about a dozen hardy souls to venture out.

Of the juniors, Jake Speed was the winner with one specie, 17.326 points.

Of the two ladies who signed on, neither had a fish to weigh in and each received 10 points.

Ron Thornton was the winner of the men’s competition with one specie, 17.218 points from Ron Malek, one specie and 17.174 points.

The weather was promising with a gusty south easterly blowing as the boats set off, but with the forecast suggesting this would drop off in an hour or two.

Four Juniors participated with Jake Speed the winner , having 4 species and a total of 46.348 points.

Of the two ladies who signed on, Ruby McGrady with five species (57.484 points) was the winner.

There were 12 men in the men’s division with some very good bags (representing 10 species) returned.

Winner with six species and a total of 70.988 points was Frank Pierucci. Second with five species and 57.290 points was Ron Malek, with Morrie Elson third with four species and 48.148 points.

The fish of the day were Morrie Elson’s 823g Harlequin and 873g King George whiting as well as Greg Mansell’s Club record catch of a 953g longhead flathead.

The wheel spin was won by Frank Pierucci for his monster whiting of 323g.

WEDNESDAY FISHING BONANZA Aiden Rinney celebrated the start of the school holidays by catching his first legal sized dhufish on Wednesday 23 December. The fish measured 56cms but was on the filleting table before it could be weighed.

Well done Aiden, a reward for your persistence.

The weather forecasts for the clinic on 12th, 13th and 14th of January were not promising, however, the Tuesday orientation day went ahead and was thoroughly enjoyed by the 20 participants. Wednesday’s forecast however was not deemed safe and the day was cancelled and the clinic scheduled for the Thursday and Friday.

Thursday’s weather was not much better with strong easterlies blowing all morning, however, the two boats ventured out fishing inshore where most of the juniors caught a feed of whiting. Dillon Murphy had a real thrill, catching his first dhufish, although undersized. Happily it was safely returned to the water to grow bigger.

Dillon is hoping it has his name on it.

Friday’s weather looked promising even though the early easterly didn’t die until about 11.00, however the fish must have been spooked with so many lines in the water and catches were poor.

At the weigh in, only four species were recorded with Will Johnston with three species, the most successful.

All agreed that the clinic was a success, working around the weather conditions with smooth organization and great support from the volunteers from the Angling Section.

JANUARY BOAT COMPETITION

A good variety of fish was weighed in with 10 species represented.

Junior winner with two species was Ryan McDiarmid two species and 26.066 points from Dillon Murphy, fishing his first boat competition, also two species and 25.520 points.

Lady winner, with two species was Ruby McGrady (25.692points) from Julie Loran (17.182 points).

The winner of the men’s section was Peter McGrady with five species (57.562 Points) from Alan Partridge (again) four species (49.870 points.)

Winner of the wheel spin was Alan Partridge with the heaviest herring (202g).

The end of the summer season is fast approaching however if the current weather pattern persists we should be in for several more months of fine boating weather.

who will assess the situation and implement the best course of action which may be directing you to the location of an oil spillage kit so that an immediate response can be initiated.

The safety of you and your vessel is our priority and as such I remind you all that vessels penned at HYC should be fitted with an automatic bilge pump as per Section 6.5 of the Marina Facilities Section Bylaws. It is also recommended that an oil removal filter be fitted between any automatic bilge pump and its outflow to prevent oil from being pumped into the marina however these are rarely installed.

The Department of Transport is the Hazard Management Agency for marine oil pollution incidents in Western Australian waters.

Reports have also been received of penned vessels being refueled within the HYC marina complex. You are also reminded that the refueling of vessels in pens is strictly prohibited except in an extreme emergency and then must be approved by the Management Committee or General Manager. Closed containers of fuel as approved under Australian Standards can be taken on board but can only be decanted outside of the Club’s leasehold area or marina.

While the installation of the oil removal filter is only a recommendation the onus is on all of us to maintain a healthy marina environment by following best practices and preventing accidental discharges of contaminates.

According to the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association, of all the oil that enters the environment each year 33% comes from general vessels so it is time to put some preventative measures in place. It is recommended that regular inspections of bilges are undertaken and any sign of diesel, petrol, oil or contaminated or pollutant liquids NOT be pumped out of the bilge but be removed through the use of oil absorbent bags. Remember that it is illegal to pump oily discharge overboard. Don’t think just because there is only a little bit of oil it’s okay. The test for illegal pollution is simply a “visible sheen” on the water.

Firstly I would like to wish a very belated Happy New Year to you all.

The end of 2015 and the start of 2016 saw some mixed weather but has also seen a lot of power boating activity particularly to Rottnest. The Power Section Christmas Party, held at HYC, was attended by 25 members and a good time was had by all. The Secret Santa – Penny Rowden doing the honours - went off with its usual eager anticipation and excitement!!? Overall a very good evening was had and thanks are due to the club staff for the room and for the food.

The section’s Rotto Run was held over the Australia Day long weekend. Narrowneck Bay was full, with boats both from HYC and other Perth clubs. One or two ‘interesting’ events took place – resulting in the appearance of two Fremantle Sea Rescue craft to tow stricken vessels home – not, fortunately, any of ours. The cray fishing was not up to the standard of last year only in the size of the cray. From 6 pots pulled over 3 days we returned over 50 undersize specimens. Enough of the correct size and state were caught however to make a couple of good lunches and a feed on the beach for the section picnic.

At one time or another on the Sunday afternoon up to 30 people attended the get together and, once again, a good time was had by all. Thanks to Leigh and Nella for their organisation – and for a berth on their boat.

Upcoming events will include a twilight power run from the Club followed by a pop-up BBQ in Pinky’s Bar. The date for this event has to be finalised but it will be either March or early April. Keep an eye on email flyers and notice boards for the details. All club members both power boaties and otherwise will be welcome to attend. The Mini Golf Challenge will again be held on the Saturday morning of the Club Rotto Run. Prizes and the Perpetual Trophy are up for grabs so be at the mini-golf course before 10:30 am.

I hope that 2016 turns out to be a grand year for you all.
