COMMODORE’S REPORT At long last the real summer weather has arrived and the opportunity to spend some quality time on the water is here.

This year kicked off in fine fashion with our Clubs’ New Years Eve Party and what a night it was! The theme was 70’s with many members and guests attending in costume. A scantily clad Dr. Frank N Furter from the 70’s movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show was the accidental main attraction. I have no idea who he was but I am sure it required significant bravery to wear the “outfit” he somehow fit into. I particularly enjoyed the evening being incognito wearing a long black wig and hippy glasses. As expected the food was magnificent and credit to the staff for getting all the meals out with such efficiency to the full house. The band was excellent ensuring people got up and danced.

You would have noted in recent weeks the arrival of many new faces around the Club. HYC has joined forces with Joondalup Golf & Country Club in a reciprocal arrangement where we get the tree change and they get the sea change. Please make our newest guests in the Club feel welcome, as I am sure they will when we visit them.

As this Compass issue goes to print we will have just run the Club’s signature sailing regatta – “The Pot of Gold“ which includes the “Dash for Cash” or as it was pointed out to me by the lads from Covert Operation the “Drift For Cash” regatta! Yes, for the second year running we had a beautiful day for the big event but struggled in the wind department. This event attracts a

large fleet of visiting offshore keelboats and is equally supported by other clubs with a large dinghy presence.

It is an absolute pleasure to have so many visitors. I trust all the sailors, volunteers and families involved had a wonderful regatta.

Following an engine issue with Balaton Jack I would like to publicly thank Ian McCall and Brad West for the enormous undertaking in installing the new motor and components, and the subsequent commissioning. Our sincere thanks should be directed to them along with members such as David Swain and Rob Sweet who are constantly attending to our fleet of Club RIB’s and marine assets. They are to be commended for the work they do, as much of it goes unnoticed.

The Family Snorkeling Day, a Dive Section initiative, is a free event and all members are invited. By the time this Compass issue hits members homes the event will be right upon us. Please bring your kids, grandkids and your own boat if you have one. Transport from the Club and to the Little Island “base boat” (Balaton Jack) can be provided. All members’ are encouraged to participate, even if it’s just for a swim. Keep an eye out for further details.

As most of you would be aware, Commodore Chris Grant (2014 -2015) passed away late last year. Not only was he such an extraordinary person, he was a friend to so many of us and one of those magical people that have made our Club so unique. We all sadly miss him.

The funeral was beautiful as were his family and the way in which they spoke of him with so much love and respect. Thank you to Chris’ family who bequeathed his yacht “Pandora” to the Club for the development of sailing – a fantastic legacy for us to remember Chris by.

For our new members this year we have the “New Members Night” just around the corner. The evening provides a wonderful opportunity for members to see exactly what each section of the Club does and maybe

whet your appetite enough to participate. Keep an eye out for the promos.

Remaining a very affordable family orientated club is certainly a challenge given the tough trading conditions we have experienced over the last couple of years. I have mentioned on several occasions the need to grow both our membership base and increase patronage. Whilst every effort has been made to do this, and in fairness there has been many successes, the time has come to make some important decisions. In identifying the actual shortfall between the growth of membership income and the growth of administration overhead expense your Club management has quantified a proposed “catch up” amount and developed an accurate indexing system to ensure membership fees are linked to real club cost increases so we do not find ourselves in this position again.

To that end, a Special General Meeting was held on the 28th February 2017 at which the above mentioned membership fee increase and new indexing system was approved by those Members attending. Whilst no one likes to see memberships fees rise, it was a necessary adjustment to the base line fee and one of the first steps towards locking in our long-term financial plan and subsequently future proofing our Club. In canvassing members’ thoughts over the last few weeks mostly related to the above, I have found the comments both encouraging and enlightening. The invaluable feedback will form the basis of an informal review of our operations and hopefully, working alongside the House Committee and Management Committee, we will see the development and possible implementation of much of this feedback.

Putting this all aside, our Club is tracking very well in comparison to similar clubs and from where I sit, the value and quality of services and opportunities on offer to all members is first class.

And with that in mind, plus the excellent weather conditions we are currently enjoying, now is the time to invite your friends down to the Club for a meal and a few cold drinks. Enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon taking in the panoramic vista from the Members Bar or take the opportunity to enjoy the live music and atmosphere in the Wet Bar. Jag the Joker is currently at $2000. You have to be in it to win it! Every time you buy a drink you receive a ticket for the barrel. Simply be in the Wet bar on a Wednesday afternoon anytime after 5pm and for the draw at 7pm.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Weekend and Event Member Parking In recent weeks prior to this edition of Compass our car park has been filled to capacity as a result of the Rottnest Swim, sailing and state championship regattas.

These major events do not always place pressure on our parking area.

Coinciding with the events was weekend weather of 37 and 39 degree days. Not only were there many members using their vessels to avoid the hot weather but many members were also involved assisting swimmers in the Rottnest Swim.

Unfortunately many members disregarded gate access and parking requirements, allowing their guests, swim companions and weekend passengers (non members) to enter Club grounds and utilise member parking facilities. Combined with the sailing events, the ability for members to enter and use Club facilities was diminished.

The long weekend just passed saw the Optimist State Championships conducted at HYC. A great event for the Club to host, exposing our Club to the wider sailing fraternity, develop our volunteer involvement and knowledge and provide the opportunity for our younger sailors to participate in elite competition at their home Club.

Due to the problems of the week before and the same expectation of boating members allowing guests and passengers to enter, our Security Officer was requested to monitor gate access for member only parking to ensure space was available for members throughout the weekend.

Parking availability is rarely unavailable and only becomes a major issue when non members are able to enter. Too many times members are seen, not only by

officers of the Club but also fellow members, standing at the gate waiting to swipe their guests in or allowing tailgating into the car park.

A report from the Security Officer will have been received since distribution of this Compass edition and follow up communication with those members failing to adhere to parking requirements taken place.

Trailer Parking The summer holiday period between Christmas and New Year, and long weekends during summer which may include Australia Day, depending on which day of the week it falls, and Labour Day, are periods when no trailer parking is allowed in Club grounds. On all other weekends it is a requirement for members to request a trailer pass from our reception authorising trailer parking.

On many occasions, unauthorised trailers have been wheel clamped or removed from the Club car park. It came to our attention that a member requested an authorisation pass supposedly for their second car but instead placed it on their trailer which they left in the car park over the weekend of the Rottnest Swim and hot weather. A ‘reminder discussion’ has since taken place with that member.

Please consider your fellow members and their needs, when you are attending or utilising the facilities of the Club.

Rotto Run Saturday 11th March is our annual member day at Rottnest. Together with our Rottnest and Return yacht races, all members will be able to enjoy afternoon food and refreshments in the Rottnest Hotel marquee from 4pm thanks to the generosity of our Club sponsors: Peard Real Estate (Jeff Coghill and Byron Wallace), PK Constructions (Paul and Rebecca Kuenan) & Ramsay’s Air Conditioning (Rob and Anne Ramsay).

Always a good day had by all, so hopefully you will be able to join in the fun.

A Special Tribute

To a much loved former Commodore

Chris Grant, Surveyor and Sailor and so much more Past Commodore, Chris Grant, was out cycling on the morning of December 4th last year getting in some practice for his weekly cycle with the club’s Fat Boys group when he suffered a heart attack and could not be revived.

Long standing crew member Rob Bortot was surprised when Chris didn’t arrive for the afternoon’s race on Pandora before learning of the tragedy from family members. The following week the crew, together with son Jeremy over from Townsville, sailed Pandora and in a mark of respect. Fellow crews wore black arm bands and flew black ribbons from the stays.

Chris Grant was an enthusiastic and talented sportsman at CBC in the Terrace competing in swimming, athletics, hockey and football. Later in life this love was transferred

to his team, the Dockers, and to sailing where he just loved being on the water. He met his future wife Sandy, a student at Mercedes College at dancing classes and over time they raised four children. He was a devoted family man and adored by the grandchildren.

Chris became a Licensed Surveyor in 1967 and worked all over the State from Esperance to the Kimberley; he recalled “funnily, one the hardest things was getting a transfer from the Gibson Soak Tigers football team to play in the Kimberley”! Following a stint in the USA, Canada and the UK on a Churchill Fellowship Chris was instrumental in establishing the “Dial before you Dig” system and in 1985 became Surveyor General of WA. Later, at the behest of BHP, Chris took leave to head a land

titling project in Thailand which subsequently led Chris to work overseas as a consultant for agencies such as World Bank and AusAid in countries as remote as Afghanistan, Ghana and Peru including post-tsunami Aceh.

As he had done in all the communities Chris found himself, he thrust himself into the running of the yacht club, contributing on committees leading to his election as Commodore from 2013 to 2015. Known for his commitment to others, great sense of humour and wit, statesman-like leadership and wisdom Chris was a muchloved and respected member of Hillarys Yacht Club.

In his eulogy for Chris, Commodore Simon Davenport reflected the feelings of many: “His legacy will not just be about what he achieved in management or the incredible respect our wonderful staff and membership had for him. It is more likely to be about the good spirit, culture and camaraderie that exists and flourishes in our club as a result of the extraordinary person he was”.

He will be sorely missed by members and by his family of wife Sandy, children Jeremy, Amanda, Emma, Donny and their families. Through the family’s generous donation of Pandora to the club for training purposes, Chris’ love of sailing will be passed on to the next generation of sailors. RIP Chris Grant

Purple Pirates entertained over 100 excited children at the annual Kids’ Christmas Party last year! With families in tow, about 200 people enjoyed the spectacle of Santa and his helper handing out gifts to each and every child whilst Damo, HYC’s Head Chef made sure all the party food favourites were in abundance on the buffet!

The next few months will bring us plenty of opportunities to be social! St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, the Section presentation dinners and, of course, the Commodore’s Ball are all being prepared now and we look forward to sharing them all with you very soon!

New Year’s Eve Oh what a night! Members, guests and the Harbour Room were taken back to the 1970’s for a sensational evening!

Superb outfits graced the dance floor, which was packed out by the energetic ten-piece band Blow the House Down.

The band’s own tribute to Dusty Springfield kicked off the evening with a stunning floor performance from “Dusty” herself which set the tone of quality entertainment for the rest of the evening.

Ringing in the New Year in style were 280 Members and their guests, plus all the dedicated chefs and function staff who sarcrificed their own NYE to party with us and ensure the event was a great success.

If you dare, have a look at all the photos of NYE on pages 18-19 - well done to all those who dressed for the occasion - you looked just fabulous!

Sue Osborne

Susan hails from Old Saybrook, Connecticut, USA and in May will celebrate the 25th anniversary of her 30th birthday. Susan was introduced to HYC by Rob Bills (Catabatic) after attending the christening of Catabatic and became a member in 2009. Susan is active in the keel racing section and has recently taken a position on the club’s house committee and last year participated in the interclub sailing event.

Family Background Susan and Gary have been married for 27 years and arrived in Perth from Bermuda in 1993. They have 2 boys Conor, 20 and Tyler, 17.

She was introduced to sailing by her father and sailed in Long Island Sound. In 1982 Sue took the opportunity crewing around New England which led to 4 years as a professional crew on private yachts throughout the US Eastern states, Caribbean and across the Atlantic. In 1986 Sue settled in when Bermuda where she married Gary in 1990.

Occupation In 2008 she decided to make a career change from working in sales and marketing and as a sessional tutor at ECU and took the plunge going back to university to complete her Graduate Diploma in teaching.

Susan is currently a special needs teacher at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre. She is very passionate about teaching special needs and recently encouraged two of her students to ‘try sailing’ and they completed the Tackers course with Chris Kelly.

Yacht achievements Susan’s sailing background is cruising and blue water sailing working as professional crew on private yachts.

In 1983 she landed a job on a 75ft Bahamian schooner sailing out to the America’s cup races in Newport and had a front row seat when Alan Bond revealed the keel to the world. Her sailing has included a trans-Atlantic crossing, sailing the Caribbean to Venezuela, Antigua Race Week, sailing the Baltic Finland to Germany and sailing in a snow storm one December delivering a boat from Connecticut to Bermuda. The trans-Atlantic crossing on an 83ft maxi Nirvana was the most personally challenging. The sail from Connecticut to Hamble Hampsire took 13 days; they hit a whale in the middle of the night and for 3 days were headed by a severe low with 50 knot winds and 15 foot seas. Susan was the cook responsible for all provisioning and cooking for 8 crew.

HYC Perspective Susan was crew on Catabatic for 3 years before taking the plunge and purchasing ‘Zinfandel’, a Swarbrick S80 and started racing in the winter series. Zinfandel is the first boat she has skippered and has thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility and challenge. Highlights of sailing at HYC include winning the 2016 Ladies Skippers Race and finally catching Covert Operations at the finish in the recent Australia Day Race. TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT 10 years of training evolution at HYC The last ten years at Hillarys Yacht Club has seen the training programs develop in leaps and bounds. Day One at the Club was 9th November 2006 and saw my workload instantly double with the resignation of the then Sailing Administrator. My introduction as the new Training Manager was designed to create opportunities for Members to increase their knowledge and skills in a variety of sailing activities.

Back then, the Club had just one junior sailor in an Optimist and only 4 Lasers sailing out of HYC. The early days saw another six Optimists unwrapped from their plastic, rigged and regularly used. As more privately owned Optimists were introduced, the power boats (once kept in the shed) were moved to accommodate the growing fleet.

One of my highlights is when HYC was approached by John Longley (of Americas Cup fame) who was putting together a 2011 World Championships of Sailing event and required the assistance of Yacht Clubs. Whilst not exactly known as the biggest organiser of major events, HYC joined in and conducted the racing on the RSX Sailboards course. With the support of management and volunteer members, HYC did a fantastic job of conducting the regatta and there is plenty of memorabilia around the club to celebrate this achievement.

The experience and knowledge gained during this event

paved the way for a whole range of regattas and sailing events that you now see held at our Club. With more and more training opportunities available for Race Management volunteers, HYC will only become a stronger force in developing how sailing events are run in our local waters.

Having just completed our biggest sailing weekends of the year, with Pot of Gold, the State IRC Championships, and the WAIODA State Championships, HYC has established itself as a premier organisation for regattas and sailing events.

Over 300 sailors participated across these regattas with our Commodore present to award the winners.

From where we started to where we are now has been an interesting journey, to say the least. The last year or so has seen a concentrated effort on developing the skills of young sailors and, in particular, the creation of the Australia-wide Tackers program has brought many 7-12 year old sailors into development programs at HYC. Increasing the number of junior sailors at the Club will make great use of our facilities, as well as developing their skills to reach the podium at local, State, National and even International stages. The future for these sailors, and for HYC’s Junior Development programs, looks very bright and I look forward to seeing what the next ten years of training and development will bring.

The HYC Dive Section divers generally fall into 2 types: Hunters and Sightseers! For hunters it’s about catching their share of the 24 cray boat limit. For the sightseers, its taking in the seascape and diverse fish life; big, small or microscopic. Whether it’s in the rugged limestone caves and swim through’s of Rottnest or Marmion Marine Park or the tropical coral reefs of Ningaloo Reef and beyond.

While the cray catchers have always had something to take home until not many years ago, the chance to take underwater photos was the reserve of a few with fairly deep pockets. Underwater camera equipment was very expensive and very technical.

Now though, things have changed out of all recognition.

As every camera became digital on dry land so the manufacturers have developed the accessories to make them waterproof. Now we can all be budding Jacques Cousteau or Ron & Valerie Taylor (under 30’s may need Wikipedia).

The cost entry point can be simply buying a housing for your Smartphone that will take it to 40m. A few important things to note here, Telstra reception at 20m deep off Rottnest is even worse than dry land in some parts of the metro area (really), you’ll not be able to update your Facebook status and we know how socially crippling than can be, and you cannot # your snaps to your Instagram account until you reach the surface (correct at the time of writing!)

Polycarbonate housings with full functionality can be added for around the same again to take you to 40m. So for less than a $1000 we can all now bring back memories from the deep.

Getting satisfying results from your underwater photos presents a number of challenges standing on terra firma never will. Wearing bulky dive gear. Trying to stay still in water moving in all directions while hoping to get a focused image. Framing the shot on a subject that is not likely to hang around for more than 2 snaps and all manner of tiny specs floating in the water that only show up when the flash fires, leaving backscatter (spots) all over the image. Fortunately the forgiving nature of a 32Gb memory card gives you the time to get it right.

Spare a thought here for those pioneers of underwater photography who had just 36 shots on the roll of film and no viewfinder to play back. We have pre-programmed settings especially for underwater shots of seascapes, large fish, macro and even microscopic sea life.

Learning to take good photos can be quite quick. Start with full auto shots, things that cannot swim fast (or stationary!) and unless you are in fairly shallow well lit water, a subject that is within 2 meters of you. Online websites offer all the advice you need to shorten the curve and photo-editing software can turn a dodgy shot into something quite satisfying. When you can take 50+ images in a single dive

(over a 1000 in a week in tropical waters) you’ll have a lot of material to work with!

Upgrading to a top end DSLR with waterproof housing, twin strobes, wide angle and macro lens, video light and mounting tray will quickly relieve you of $15000+ Why stop with stills? All modern cameras have high quality video capability or the simplicity of a GoPro with selfie stick to record your brilliant buoyancy technique and you need never bother looking for crustaceans again.

So if you have your scuba open water qualification or better, and consider yourself as a looker not a taker then why not come along to a section meeting (we meet the first Thursday of each month) and say hi!

Our fun Christmas activities day in December was an enjoyable way to complete the first half of our summer of sailing.

Some of our sailors participated in Australian Championships for their types of boats (Class) which were in South Australia and N.S.W. during late December and early January. They all sailed very well, with the best result being 3rd place by Jackson Porter in the Laser 4.7 class, and he then went to the Australian Youth Championships where he placed 4th.

In mid-January we sailed the Cow Rock race day where as part of the fun and gala of the event, the dinghies sail amongst the HYC member’s power boats and yachts which are anchored on the north side of the Boat Harbour for close viewing of the activities.

Some new sailors have joined us from the sailing courses held during the school holidays. We look forward to seeing them continue to develop their sailing skills each week with

the assistance of coaches. In February we had a day for adults to Discover Sailing in Dinghies, which was followed each weekend by an adult’s learn to sail course. We look forward to seeing these adults joining our Saturday sailing activities.

These are some of the activities that Dinghy sailors, families and supporters can be involved with in the next few months, aside from the regular Saturday sailing days.

We have our Little Island Race event in early April. Then finish off the Summer series days with some fun at our Volunteer’s Day in late April. Our annual Presentation evening is on 28 May. Our dinghy Classes will have their State Championships in March or April, at various locations around Perth and the South West, and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy these events.

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm Mar 11 Rottnest Run

It was with great sadness that the keel boat racing fraternity learnt of the sudden passing of fellow skipper Chris Grant after he failed to show up for the race on December 4. His wit and sense of humour, particularly at presentations after races endeared him to all. The donation to HYC of Pandora for use as a training yacht is a magnificent gesture by the family and greatly appreciated.

Mid-season, all forms of racing are in full swing and despite the challenges of the frequent strong southerlies which has taken its toll on boats and crews there has been some exciting racing and close results.

In the North Coast Series the closeness of results is clearly evident when six boats of nine in a division one race finished within a minute of the winner. Deckchairs Overboard, Hard Evidence, Sally Malay and Perle have performed best in division one whilst Covert Operation, Xtreme, Helga and Blue Chip have rated highly in division two. With the new scoring system of the race officer nominating the yachts to count in the HYC fleet prior to racing, ORSSC has surged to the front on the back of excellent sailing by Missing Linck, Whim A Way and Leda. After the February 5 races ORSSC win on the day of 55 to 68 increased their lead 146 to 194 points (lowest score is best) with only one day of racing remaining.

Many thanks to the crews of the start-boat and RIBs and to race officer Graham Atkinson for the excellent courses and officiating this season, much appreciated.

In the regular consistency series races Sally Malay has made the most of the stronger winds for a couple of first and fastest results despite being hotly pursued by First Impressions for line honours and Jack Tar getting over the line ahead of Sally Malay by 13 seconds in another race. On handicap the placegetters, apart from Sally Malay have been

In division two the anticipated rivalry for line honours between Covert Operation and Xtreme, sailed by the HYC Youth Squad has delivered some close results and Zinfandel also chimed in with a fastest result in the Australia Day race, well done Sue Osborne. Show Me, Blue Chip and Helga also continue to press for pennants.

Blustery 15 to 20 knot easterly winds greeted the nervous ladies when they fronted for their annual skippers’ race, and despite the strong winds several managed spinnaker hoists.

First and fastest in division one was Sally Malay with Sarah Liddiard at the helm, with Chelsea Bradford skippering Salmander into second place and Perle (Sue Bird) was third.

In division two Melissa Rankin steered Pandora into first place with the fastest yacht, Xtreme, second skippered by Eleanor Wise and third was Volant (Marlene Scheckel). In division three Sally Simmonds skippered Sensei to record a first and fastest.

Six yachts from HYC joined the FSC fleet in Fremantle to contest the Mike Harvey Memorial Race with great success.

Once again in a testing 15 knot southerly, Mulberry was second in division one whilst the Hillarys boats cleaned up in division two. First was Covert Operation followed by Hard Evidence and Show Me third. The Fremantle boats enjoyed their overnight stay complimenting the culinary delights, good cheer and overall organisation of the event.

The season has been dominated by the strong southerlies and unfortunately the strong winds contributed to the withdrawal of two yachts who lost their masts, however Tony Brooke made the most of it being re-acquainted with Perle and other yachts whilst awaiting repairs to Tropical Itch. The strong wind warning also caused the postponement of the Fairway race to the end of the season. Following on from a pretty gusty winter series one wonders if we are seeing a longer term change.

The Rockingham Cruise (Australia Day) What makes a good cruise? The weather was great, good winds for fair sailing to and from Rockingham.

Nick and Sylvia hosted eleven crews on their catamaran, Eaglehearts to be together to watch the Rockingham Australia Day evening fireworks.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Rockingham did us proud.

Amanda, the administrator provided the CIC with complementary moorings, the catering and bar personnel organised a Chinese New Year of traditional buffet with excellent music and dancing, followed the next morning with an Aussie BBQ brekky. They certainly know how to look after visitors.

The CIC sailors were in high spirits and contributed wonderfully to all the activities during the stay. This is what makes a good cruise.

Longreach Bay Cruise On Saturday 19th November some brave CIC members of HYC departed Hillarys for Longreach Bay for a weekend of easy going and relaxing fun. Before we got to Centaur Mark the sea breeze decided to come in at about 25 knots. It was all hands on deck to trim the sails to suit the conditions. For “cruisers” that means both of us on watch for waves and bumps ahead.

Two and a half hours later we attached the mooring lines to the yacht, sat down for a cuppa to let the tension drain away. We had arrived safely. Next comes the task of inflating the dingy and motoring ashore for further adventures.

We met at 18:00 hours for a lovely meal at Geordie Bay Café where we swapped stories of the “trip across” and make other more important decisions: where to have breakfast together? By 09:00 hours we were eating at the Dome Rotto, this time planning when best to catch a breeze home to HYC. The walks to and from the settlement are outstanding, the weather was kind but the ‘crays’ decided to stay at home this weekend. I must comment on the great process we have to use Rotto, through the authorised mooring system. It does allow for a reliable, safe night’s rest and social interaction during the day.

Thanks to all that came, shared, met for meals and walks and left the island cleaner than we found it. Bring on the other cruises this season.

December Boat Competition The Boat comp was postponed due to bad weather and then cancelled as the alternative day fell on Xmas day, however this didn’t deter some angling members dropping the cray pots in with John Levitt, Gary Cunningham, Ron Thornton and John Campbell enjoying crays for Xmas day.

Junior Fishing Clinic The regular fishing clinic for juniors in the school holidays was again held with 22 eager young anglers enrolled. Day one included shore based and safety activities and then two days of fishing days with the last day a species competition.

The first day fishing produced a lot of fish - mainly Whiting - but unfortunately the next day had to be postponed to Friday due to bad weather and the boat fishing competition was eagerly awaited.

Although better on Friday, the weather was just OK for boating with the winds forecasted to increase by mid-morning, resulting in some seasickness and varieties of fish, some very nice, caught amongst the 6-species weighed in. Best fish of the day was caught by Rhiannon Suffield, a nice Snapper of 2.68kg, with the overall winner Beau Benison with 3 species Herring, Skippy and Whiting total points 35.284 (weight 1.28kg) and second was Rhiannon Suffield with 30.706 points (weight 5.706kg). Third place went to Seth Cimbo with 26.75 points ( 0.785kg).

The rules of the species competition mean the biggest fish doesn’t necessary win the overall competition and everyone who catches different species of fish has a chance to win, so better luck next time Rhiannon!

Once again strong Apr 16 Boat Fishing Comp winds deterred some anglers from Apr 29 Harbour Classic fishing and with the Club boat out of action and with some able to fish on other members’ boats, 11 species were caught with Frank Pierucci being the overall winner in the men’s section with 6 species and total points 63.434 (weight 4.217kg) The ladies section was won by Julie Moran with 3 species total points 25.566 (weight 0.283kg) and the Juniors section won by Ashely McDiarmid with 1 species total points 17.552 (weight 0.276) Records Two Records were submitted by members of the Angling club: Dennis Moran with a Goat fish weighing 0.985kg (previous record 0.927kg) Frank Pierucci with a Sand Bass weighing 0.658kg (previous record 0.495kg which was also held by Frank).

Well done to both anglers!

Beach Competition February Eight members fished in the February boat competition with the weather almost perfect and the ladies out-doing the men by catching more fish. Judy Thornton, last year’s Beach Champion, was the eventual winner with a Whiting and Herring 25.344 points (weight 0.344kg) Ruby was second with a Herring 17.264 (weight 0.264kg) followed closely by Michele Campbell with the biggest Whiting of the day 17.208 points (0.104kg), Luke Pohl was the men’s winner with a nice Herring 17.506 (0.253kg) a Herring that size would go close to winning a major prize in the up and coming Harbour Classic! Mandatory life jacket trial starts in NSW Rock fishers in the Randwick Local Government Area will be required to wear a life jacket as part of a 12-month trial aimed at increasing safety on the State’s coast.

Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott said there would be a 12-month grace period before the law is enforced and rock fishers caught not wearing a life jacket will be fined $100.

Enforcement officers from Randwick City Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Department of Primary Industries and the NSW Police Force will warn rock fishers in the area not wearing a life jacket.

There is also a new statewide education campaign targeting culturally and linguistically diverse communities about the dangers of rock fishing and encouraging the use of a life jacket.

“Wearing a life jacket is just common sense, if you don’t care about your own safety enough to wear one then think

of the emergency services worker who will be asked to come and save you if you are swept off the rocks,” Mr. Elliott said.

Ten people died while rock fishing in NSW during 201516, not one was wearing a life jacket. A coronial inquiry into the deaths of nine rock fishers carried out last year recommended the mandatory use of life jackets by people engaged in rock fishing.

Wearing a life jacket is not compulsory at this stage in other local government areas, however the message for rock fishers continues to be wear a life jacket, appropriate clothing and footwear, check weather and surf conditions before you leave home, tell someone where you are going and never fish alone.

Whist not mandatory in Western Australia to wear life jackets, it’s only a matter of time.

Artificial Reef Deployed South off Rottnest Fishing for Perth metro pelagics has a new breath of life with the instalment of two steel reef towers, which will boost fishing opportunities for fishers. The towers are an addition to the numerous other artificial reef and habitat enhancement projects complete or underway in WA, funded through recreational fishing license fees.

The wide range of habitats influenced by the reef towers will hold a good variety of fish species, with pelagics such as Samson Fish, Yellowtail Kingfish, Salmon, Spanish Mackerel and Tuna all expected to turn up at the reef as well as demersal species such as Pink Snapper, Dhufish and Baldchin Groper. There’s also a good chance of King George Whiting, Skippy, Flathead, Flounder and even Mulloway that are caught in the surrounding areas. All of these species have been encountered on the established South West artificial reefs

but other species such as Yellowfin Tuna and Bonito are also expected to make an appearance.

The reef towers were funded using recreational fishing license fees and are for all recreational fishers to enjoy.

Anchoring right on top of reefs should be avoided as it will limit the benefit they can have to all fishers and the chances of your anchor returning. Similar to the South West artificial reefs, some of the best fish are caught around the structure, not right on top of it. Fish can be targeted by casting or trolling around the area and over the top of the reef as well as drifting near the reef location and jigging or drifting weighed baits in a burley trail.

The reef towers are located in “the paddock” between Garden Island and Rottnest Island. The final coordinates have been given as 32ᵒ 07’.527 S, 115ᵒ 27’.013 E for Tower 1 and 32ᵒ 07’.461 S, 115ᵒ 26’.978 E for Tower 2 in 44-45m water depth.

EPIRBS are a vital part of safety equipment and it is important to be aware of your obligations to initially register a beacon with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and then ensure renewal every two years.

While there are a number of options available to renew the registration, any changes to your contact details or beacon details need to be updated immediately. Don’t wait for your registration to expire before doing this because incorrect contact details will delay the emergency response.

Once registered, a confirmation is issued by AMSA to provide owners and authorities with proof of current registration and to meet the legal requirements under state legislation.

Since September 2015 no EPIRB registration stickers have been sent out, however the onus is still on you to prove that the Beacon is registered.

You must carry proof of registration during a safety equipment inspection and you can choose what option works best for you.

SMS – Save your SMS registration confirmation on your mobile phone. The SMS will note the Hex ID/UIN (Unique Identification Number) of the beacon, type of beacon and the registration expiry date (two years from date of issue).

Email – Save your email registration confirmation on your mobile phone

Print – Print your registration confirmation, or if you have no email, request a printed copy to be sent via mail.

You and Inspectors can do immediate checks to see if a beacon is registered. To do this you simply: Go to AMSA Beacons webpage at https://www.beacons. amsa.gov.au Under the Beacons heading click onto “check beacon registration” Enter your beacon/HEX ID/UIN and submit You will risk being fined if you cannot provide proof of the current beacon registration to an authority undertaking a safety check and embarrassingly may also be ordered to return to an area that does not require the carrying of a beacon.

Beacons are battery-operated devices that will only function if the batteries are in good condition.

To help owners ensure that the batteries are operational, manufacturers provide a battery expiry date on the device. This expiry date must be in date. If the battery has expired the EPIRB is deemed to be non-compliant and the unit will need to be replaced A fine may result if a beacon owner cannot prove that the battery has been changed and a new expiry date is in effect.

The current fines range from $100 up to $300 for offences under the Marine Regulations but more importantly you are putting the lives of your passengers at risk if you fail to undertake these requirements.

POWER A very belated Happy New Year to all of you that I have not seen. I think that you are due an apology – the Power Section report in the last Compass was 12 months out of date – I am not sure how that happened but I will include a brief summary of the correct report with this one.

The start of the power boat season was plagued with poor weather and strong winds. That has seen several planned trips either cancelled or modified to suit the conditions.

One such activity was our October twilight cruise. Instead of a trip along the coast to watch the sunset we gathered on boats for an introductory get together before adjourning to Pinky’s Wet Bar for a BBQ. Despite the strong winds and hints of rain, a good time was had by all 76 attendees. A free draw, organised by Paul Frzop , was won by Rebecca Brock, who took home her $50 prize – thanks Paul. Thanks are also due to the skippers who allowed us to use their boats for the event – thanks Leigh & Nella, Jim & Berni, Kerry & Maree, Simon & Natalie and Barry & Bev – I hope you did not have too much clearing up to do afterwards.

The Melbourne Cup Luncheon was attended by 280 people and the Section Champagne Raffle went very well.

We sold all the tickets we had prepared and, after lunch, the draw was held in reverse order. Prize winners were Jude Hollyoak, Wendy Harrison and Ang Bell. Congratulations!

Sunday 27th November saw the section heading off to Mindarie for lunch. Conditions were good and we had 38 people make the trip on 5 boats. Everyone enjoyed themselves and all made a safe return at the end. Many thanks to “The Boat Inn” for looking after us so well and special thanks to the HYC skippers who used their boats to make the trip so pleasurable. I’m not one to tell tales out of school but several ‘incidents’ were reported on the way home. One skipper was spotted turning around to go back to retrieve a fender lost overboard whilst another was seen attempting to return his boat to the wrong pen when back at Hillarys. No names though!

The Power Section Picnic was again held in ‘Cosy Corner’ of Narrow Neck Bay on the Australia Day weekend. Even though the event was due for Saturday we decided that a ‘dress rehearsal’ was needed on Australia Day itself. The weather was spectacular – 29 degrees with a pleasant breeze – not the 42 degrees suffered ashore. Most of those who attended the ‘real’ event on Saturday managed to make it for the ‘try out’. Despite threats of strong winds for Saturday afternoon/evening, 21 people turned up on the beach and a very enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Many of the boats in the bay left early Sunday morning as the weather had reverted to blowy and cold.

Please look out for future events. We are planning another twilight cruise, a wine tour and, maybe, a trip down to the river. The return Pirate Raid is also being organised and, for that we will need lots of support – watch out for details!

Don’t forget that the Power Section meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm and we would love to see lots of new members attending those meetings as well as section activities and events.
