Welcome to this year’s edition of The Hawk – a reflection of who we are, and a glimpse of who we are becoming.
Across campus, you can feel it: momentum, renewal, and purpose. We are strengthening programs that open doors, forging partnerships that expand opportunity, and nurturing a community rooted in compassion and courage. Our mission is not simply to educate—it is to shape leaders who lift others, solve problems, and bring light where it’s needed most.
As a private college for the public good, our work does not end at graduation—it begins there. The Hilbert experience transforms lives so that our students can transform their families, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. They go on to lead, protect, heal, counsel, serve and elevate others because that is what their education was designed to do.
In the pages ahead, you’ll find stories that reveal how this happens—faculty who mentor with purpose, students discovering their calling, alumni making an impact, and partners who believe in what a small Franciscan college can do for Western New York. These stories are proof that our mission lives in people, moments, and experiences that change trajectories.
The future we are building is bold and hopeful. It is grounded in our heritage and animated by innovation. It is a future where more students discover their gifts, more families find belonging, and more graduates step into the world ready to serve and uplift.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are writing the next chapter of the Hilbert story—and it is
The annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning is a daylong event dedicated to highlighting the outstanding work of students and faculty. This year’s event, held on April 9, 2025, brought together the campus community for a dynamic series of presentations and discussions.
The day began with an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Andrew Hill, titled “The Benefits of College Education for Brain Development.” His talk set the tone for a day focused on intellectual growth and achievement.
Following the keynote, attendees explored a variety of sessions, including Leadership Scholars presentations, Honors Capstone projects, and the Faculty Research Roundtable. Creativity took center stage during Creative Writing Night, where original works were shared and celebrated.
The event concluded with the All Honors Societies Induction Ceremony, a proud moment in which five honor societies welcomed 62 new members—a testament to the academic excellence within our community.

In May 2025, Hilbert College proudly unveiled its newly redesigned website, marking a major step forward in accessibility and user experience. From the very beginning, the goal was clear: create a site that is welcoming, easy to navigate, and fully ADA compliant—a digital space that reflects Hilbert’s Franciscan values of inclusivity and community.
The new site features a custom design developed with Fastspot, blending modern aesthetics with Hilbert’s brand identity. It’s not just a fresh look—it’s a smarter structure, making it easier for prospective students, alumni, and friends of the College to find what they need quickly and intuitively.
To keep the site running smoothly, Hilbert uses DubBot, a web governance platform that scans the entire site every month.
DubBot helps the marketing team maintain high standards by flagging accessibility issues, broken links, and even typos. This proactive approach ensures the site stays compliant with WCAG standards and continues to deliver a seamless experience for all visitors.
For Hilbert, accessibility is more than a checklist—it’s a commitment. This redesign represents our dedication to creating an inclusive online environment that mirrors the welcoming spirit of our campus and our mission of community.
What is intelligence? At Hilbert College, it’s more than just data it’s the art of science. The Intelligence and Data Analysis (IDA) program equips students with the skills to collect, analyze, and interpret information using advanced technologies and critical thinking. Students gain hands-on experience with tools like hyperspectral imagery, thermal and infrared tech, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). They also explore internet scrubbing, psychological profiling, and cellular tracking—skills increasingly vital in today’s intelligence landscape.

With the global Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) job market projected to grow over 30% by 2031, Hilbert’s IDA program prepares students for careers in national security, law enforcement, and private intelligence. The curriculum blends cutting-edge tech with human insight, emphasizing the irreplaceable role of analysts in interpreting data beyond what machines can see.
A standout feature is the program’s focus on Artificial Intelligence and Prompt Engineering. Students learn to harness AI tools like large language models to enhance intelligence collection and strategic forecasting—turning technology into a force multiplier.
From tracking Russian military movements using crowd-sourced data to analyzing satellite imagery for clandestine airfields, students engage in real-world projects that mirror professional intelligence work. Courses like Human Intelligence (HUMINT) and Imagery Analysis deepen their understanding of psychological motivations and geospatial technologies.
Launched in Fall 2023, the IDA program has quadrupled in size, driven by student enthusiasm and successful outreach events like IDA Shadow Day. As the U.S. intelligence community seeks to expand OSINT capabilities, Hilbert graduates are poised to play a pivotal role.
Hilbert’s IDA program isn’t just about education—it’s about shaping the future of intelligence.

Hilbert College’s Criminal Justice/Forensic Science CSI Club brought an unforgettable experience to campus this October: a live helicopter landing and demonstration by the New York State Police Aviation Unit.
The event, held on October 29 on the football practice field behind the main campus, gave students a rare, up-close look at the technology and teamwork behind modern law enforcement aviation. Organized by Assistant Professor John Payne and the CSI Club, the demonstration showcased the NYSP aircraft and featured a static display along with an interactive Q&A session.
Students had the chance to speak directly with the visiting crew—a civilian pilot, a radio operator trooper (RIO), and a public relations representative—about aviation operations and career paths within the State Police.
“This is an opportunity for all students interested in a law enforcement career,” said Payne. “It’s not just for CSI majors; anyone considering this field can benefit from hearing firsthand about these specialized roles.”
The demonstration was part of the club’s ongoing initiative to expose students to diverse criminal justice professions, from canine units to aviation. “The helicopters really pique their interest,” Payne noted. “Real-life experiences matter, and balancing tactical and educational content helps students find their niche.”
Originally scheduled for October 22, the event was postponed due to weather and successfully rescheduled for October 29. Open to all students, the program underscored Hilbert’s commitment to experiential learning and career exploration in criminal justice and forensic science.
raising an impressive $192,000 from 286 generous donors. This annual tradition reflects the unwavering support and commitment of our alumni, friends, and the entire Hilbert community to student success.
Every dollar raised makes a direct impact—funding student scholarships, emergency assistance, health and wellness programs, athletics, and academic support services. These contributions ensure that Hilbert students have the resources they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Students joined in the celebration by writing heartfelt thank-you notes, sharing their gratitude on social media, and participating in lively events in the West Herr Atrium. Their enthusiasm was a powerful reminder of how your generosity shapes their college experience.
Giving Day is more than a fundraiser—it’s a testament to the unity and shared purpose that define Hilbert College. Together, we are building a stronger future for our students and our community.
Save the date: April 16, 2026, for next year’s Giving Day! Let’s make it even bigger and better.

In Fall 2024, Professor Dan Roland offered an inspiring course at Hilbert College titled GS 300: Service Learning Abroad in the Dominican Republic. This immersive program combined classroom learning with real-world experience, offering students a unique opportunity to explore the culture, history, economy, and environmental challenges of the Dominican Republic. Throughout the semester, students engaged in in-depth discussions and research, preparing for a transformative journey that would take them far beyond the classroom. Over winter break in January 2025, a group of eight—including six students, Professor Roland, and Dr. Amy Smith—traveled to the Dominican Republic to put their knowledge into practice through hands-on service projects.
Each student led a personalized project, developed and prepared in the U.S. before departure. These initiatives ranged from educational workshops on core business functions and capital improvement efforts for small businesses, to microloans for local entrepreneurs and care packages for the elderly. Students also

organized a school supply and sports equipment drive, supported English language learners, and even taught entrepreneurial lessons through a creative lollipop marketing activity.
These impactful projects were made possible thanks to generous support from sponsors including AAkron Line, Battin Eyecare, the Drago Family, Dr. Ed Woodworth, Hamburg Sunrise Rotary, New Era, Parkside Candy, Teacher’s Desk, and Victory Sports. Their contributions helped turn student ideas into meaningful action.
The experience left a lasting impression on everyone involved. Students gained a deeper understanding of cultural awareness and their role in a global society, while forming lifelong memories and learning powerful lessons about service, empathy, and leadership.
This journey served as proof that even the smallest act of kindness can ripple outward and change lives. For the students and faculty involved, it was more than just a trip, it was a powerful reminder that we all have something to give. Through service, compassion, and connection, they helped build a more equitable and empathetic world, one meaningful moment at a time.

Hilbert College proudly hosted its annual Hilbert Reads event on October 27, 2025, featuring award-winning storyteller and photographer John Noltner, creator of the acclaimed multimedia project A Peace of My Mind. The evening, held in the Swan Auditorium, brought together students, faculty, staff, and community members for an inspiring dialogue on peace, compassion, and the power of storytelling. Noltner’s work blends striking photography with personal narratives to explore what peace means in today’s world.

His exhibit, A Peace of My Mind, was displayed in the West Herr Atrium throughout the week of October 20–27, offering visitors a space for reflection and conversation. Through portraits and stories gathered from diverse voices across the country, Noltner invites audiences to consider how we can bridge divides and find common ground.
During his keynote address, Noltner shared insights from his travels and the individuals featured in his project, emphasizing that “every voice has value, and every person has a story worth hearing.” His message resonated deeply with Hilbert’s Franciscan values of peace, service, and respect for all persons. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with Noltner during a Q&A session, gaining a deeper understanding of his creative process and the transformative power of dialogue.
Dr. Amy Smith, Dean of Academic Affairs, reflected on the significance of the event:
“John Noltner’s work captures the heart of what it means to build peace through understanding. His stories remind us that empathy and listening are essential tools for creating a more just and compassionate world.”
The Hilbert Reads program continues to serve as a cornerstone of the college’s commitment to fostering thoughtful discussion and lifelong learning. By welcoming voices like Noltner’s, Hilbert encourages its community to embrace diversity, seek understanding, and work toward a more peaceful future.

This past spring, a group of Hilbert College students and staff members lived out the college’s mission of service by taking part in an alternative break trip to Avery County, North Carolina. Organized by Hilbert’s Rotaract Club and the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership, the trip provided students with the opportunity to dedicate their time and energy to the construction of two new homes for families in partnership with Avery County Habitat for Humanity.
Throughout the week, students engaged in a variety of construction tasks, including building cabinets, installing insulation, and painting. Working alongside Habitat’s skilled construction supervisor, students learned new skills while witnessing firsthand the power of collaboration and the profound impact that safe, affordable homeownership can have on a family’s life.
In addition to the physical labor, students had the opportunity to learn more about the lasting effects of Hurricane Helene in rural North Carolina communities and the broader mission of Habitat for Humanity. Evening reflections and group discussions allowed participants to connect their service to Hilbert’s Franciscan values, exploring the deeper meaning of community, service, and compassion.
“It felt amazing knowing that every screw, nail, and brushstroke we added was helping families get a fresh start after Hurricane Helene.”, shared student Katie Bradfield. “Working together and seeing the progress on each home was so rewarding and being welcomed by such a kind and warm community in North Carolina made the experience even more meaningful and special.”
The trip wasn’t just about building houses. It was about building relationships, deepening understanding, and fostering a shared sense of responsibility. As a powerful example of Hilbert’s commitment to learning through service, alternative break experiences help develop students who are not only academically prepared but also socially conscious and ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.

Jamal Harris Jr. graduated from Hilbert College in December 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media and Communications and a minor in Sports Media.
He began his professional journey at Buffalo Toronto Public Media (BTPM) in September 2024, joining the NPR news team as a news intern. Jamal quickly rose through the ranks, earning a full-time role as a multimedia reporter. After a successful year at BTPM, he transitioned in September 2025 to The Buffalo News, where he now serves as a general assignment reporter.
Prior to his time at BTPM, Jamal gained valuable experience as a sports media intern at WUFO Radio and WIVB News.

Outside the newsroom, Jamal remains deeply connected to Western New York athletics. He works as a play-by-play announcer, primarily covering football and both girls’ and boys’ volleyball. In addition, he is a certified basketball referee and an active member of Local Board 53.

We caught up with two accomplished Hilbert College Digital Media and Communication (DMAC) alumni, Jamal Harris Jr.’25 and Ryan Zunner ‘21, who are making their mark in the world of radio – namely, at Buffalo Toronto Public (BTPM) Media NPR as anchors for the 2025 local primaries, and regular voices on the radio.
Jamal Harris Jr. ’25 had a swift and successful climb in the broadcast industry. His journey began in September 2024 as an intern, quickly transitioning to a per diem role before a series of promotions led him to his current position as a multimedia reporter.
Preparing for Primary Night: “A primary night broadcast requires a deep dive into background knowledge. We focus heavily on the mayor’s race and various municipalities, always keeping in mind that low voter turnout can be a factor in primaries. The mayor’s race is definitely what I anticipate will be most impactful and garner the most public interest.”
Reflecting on Hilbert: “Coming from a small high school, a small college like Hilbert felt familiar and welcoming. The campus environment was great, and the professors were incredibly accessible. Being able to text them with questions 24/7 really made a difference.
“DMAC at Hilbert, especially the radio class with Dr. Don Vincent, directly prepared me for everything I’ve encountered. He drilled us on timing, on-air responsibilities, press releases, and what to look for in a story. It’s amazing how much of what happened in class, is exactly what happens in real life.”
Ryan Zunner ‘21, now an Assistant Managing Editor, also leveraged internships to launch his career. His path involved gaining valuable experience elsewhere before returning to BTPM, a testament to the strong foundation he built.
“I got my foot in the door with an internship during my junior year, which was crucial for learning the ins and outs of news operations. I worked elsewhere for a bit, but ultimately, coming back to BTPM felt like the right move.”
“Primary night prep involves a lot of consulting with colleagues. We go back months, even years, tracking candidates’ records. It’s a collaborative effort with the production team to ensure all the necessary elements are covered.”
“Right now, the biggest issues we’re anticipating to garner public interest are the City of Buffalo’s financial challenges, housing, and infrastructure concerns like potholes and roads. Public safety is always a key topic as well.”
Reflecting on Hilbert: “Being from Kenmore, the proximity and the small school environment really drew me to Hilbert. The hands-on learning from professors was a huge draw. You truly get to take an active part in your learning, and the professors, like Chris Gallant, genuinely want you to succeed. Their connections with local media organizations were also a huge plus for me, as I always wanted to work locally, and the program’s structure really fit that goal.”
“DMAC at Hilbert offered so much more than just writing press releases. You get experience in all different kinds of media—audio, video. You learn to communicate with organizations and really gather a wealth of experience across many industries. That breadth of knowledge has been incredibly valuable.”
Brandon Ciesielski ’17 was officially sworn in as one of six new officers joining the Apopka Police Department on June 19, 2025. A proud Hilbert College graduate, Brandon earned his degree in Criminal Justice in 2017 and has since demonstrated a strong commitment to public safety and service.
Massimo Cimato ’14 graduated from Hilbert with a degree in Human Services. His career path took him in a different direction than originally anticipated, however his background in Human Services has been essential to every aspect of his life and career. Massimo is a Financial Advisor with Equitable Advisors.
Kimberly Kajdasz ’02 is having a landmark year! She recently became engaged to her fiancé, Eric Toczek, and celebrated a significant career milestone with her promotion to Deputy Budget Director of Erie County. Kimberly earned her degree in Accounting.

Have you ever dreamed of selling your home and living out of an RV only you can’t find an RV that you love? Just build your own! That’s exactly what Amber (Bailey) Beers ‘14, her husband Bryant, and their dog Kira did! See exactly how they did it here!
James Riehle ‘10 has been promoted to Postmaster of the Eden, NY Post Office. During his time at Hilbert, James was an active member of the Communications Club, where he honed the skills that have supported his professional success. Congratulations to James on this well-deserved achievement!
Clifford Jackson ’03 has been appointed Chief Probation Officer, succeeding Timothy Englerth, who will retire next month after more than 24 years of service. Jackson has been with the Probation Office since 2006 and will now oversee operations across 17 counties, managing a team of 67 officers and staff. His leadership, professionalism, and dedication to public service position him well to guide the district’s Probation and Pretrial Services Office into the future. Jackson earned his Bachelor of Science in Economic Crime and Investigation at Hilbert.
Rebecca (Elensky) Robinson ’13 recently assumed a new role as Senior Forensic Examiner with the Anne Arundel County Police Department, bringing her expertise to support investigations and ensure the highest standards in forensic analysis. During her time at Hilbert, she majored in Forensic Science and was a standout athlete, playing both soccer and softball.

Paul ’73 and Diane (Berger) Hennessy ’73 recently celebrated a beautiful milestone: their 50th wedding anniversary! The couple, who met in a Psychology class while pursuing their Associate in Applied Science in Business at Hilbert in 1971, were married on July 12, 1975. They marked the occasion with family and friends at their home in Vero Beach, Florida. The family has grown to include five children and seven grandchildren.

and her husband Eric Senko would like to announce the birth of their first child, Eric Jr. on April 27, 2025. Ashley graduated with her B.S. in Business Administration and currently works at MOOG as a Senior Program Analyst.
Ashley Waczkowski ’17 and her husband, Dave, joyfully welcomed their second child, Carter James, on July 28, 2025. Big sister Lilly (born May 17, 2023) and the family’s two dogs, Max and Samson, are thrilled to have Carter join the crew.

is making a difference! On October 17 and 18, the Hilbert campus came alive with energy and excitement as alumni, students, faculty, and friends gathered for the annual True Blue Alumni Weekend. This beloved tradition was a resounding success—filled with laughter, nostalgia, and a heartfelt celebration of Hilbert’s Franciscan values.
The festivities began Friday evening with the True Blue Happy Hour at JP Fitzgerald’s, where alumni, faculty, and staff reconnected over shared Hilbert memories and hearing about the campus and students of today.
Saturday morning welcomed guests back to campus for the San Damiano Alumni Awards Celebration, honoring distinguished alumni who exemplify Hilbert’s mission and values. The ceremony also recognized the Class of 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees, a proud moment for the Hilbert athletics community.
The afternoon was action-packed with athletic events, including women’s and men’s soccer matches, baseball alumni games, and men’s basketball alumni matchups. The Athletic Hall of Fame inductees received special recognition during halftime of the women’s soccer game, adding to the day’s excitement.
Guests enjoyed tailgating at the beer tent, complete with a nacho bar, while cheering on all the Hawks alumni and student games. A new highlight this year was the Anniversary Class Dinner at Johnson’s Landing, where alumni from the classes of 1975, 2000, 2015, and 2020 gathered for an exclusive evening of great food, camaraderie, and celebration.
Each year, True Blue Alumni Weekend grows bigger and better—and 2025 was no exception. We can’t wait to welcome you back for True Blue 2026!

Hilbert College, rooted in its Catholic Franciscan heritage, is dedicated to nurturing informed citizens who are committed to serving and strengthening their communities. With a focus on educational innovation and professional programs, Hilbert provides students with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
Hilbert relies on the generosity of alumni and donors to support its mission and provide students with an exceptional education. The Hilbert Fund is a critical source of unrestricted funds that help bridge the gap between tuition revenue and college expenses. This allows the college to remain financially sustainable and to invest in areas that will have the greatest impact on student success.
The Hilbert Fund is used to support a variety of initiatives at Hilbert College, including:
• Student Scholarships: Help make a Hilbert education more affordable for deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend.
• Classroom and Technology Upgrades: Ensure that students have access to the latest technology and resources they need to succeed in their studies.
• Wellness Programs: Promote the physical and mental well-being of students, which is essential for academic success.
• New Initiatives: Help the college to explore and develop new academic programs and initiatives that will have the most potential to help our students and the college move forward.
We invite you to join us in supporting Hilbert College by making a gift to The Hilbert Fund. Your contribution will make a real difference in the lives of our students and help us to continue our mission of providing an affordable, high-quality education that prepares students for success in the 21st century.

This fall, you have the opportunity to do more than just wear your Hilbert pride—you can be a lifeline for a Hilbert student in need.
We’re excited to launch a special initiative this fall – Cozy for a Cause. For every $50.50 Limited-Edition Hilbert sweatshirt sold, $10 will go directly to the Hilbert Student Emergency Fund—a vital resource that helps students stay on track with their education if facing unexpected financial or personal hardships.
Imagine a student who’s excelling in class but suddenly can’t afford rent or transportation to get to school. Or another who’s forced to choose between buying groceries and paying for textbooks. These are real challenges our students face—and your support can mean the difference between staying in school or dropping out.
Here’s how you can help:
• Buy a sweatshirt for yourself or as a gift—it’s cozy, stylish, and full of purpose.
• Know that $10 of your purchase goes straight to helping students overcome emergencies like housing instability, food insecurity, or sudden medical expenses.
• Wear your Hilbert gear proudly, knowing you are part of a compassionate community that stands behind its students. Together, we can wrap our students in warmth, support, and hope this season!
Every sweatshirt sold is more than just apparel—it’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of community. Together, we ensure that our students’ greatest needs are being met and they can focus on academics and their future careers.
Whether it’s an unmet tuition expense, housing crisis, or food insecurity, your support helps ensure that no student has to choose between their education and an emergency.
Please visit weblink.donorperfect.com/cozy to order your sweatshirt today and be part of the Hilbert helping community. On behalf of the students that will benefit from your generosity, we thank you.

Hilbert College announces with deep sadness the passing of President Emerita Sister Edmunette Paczesny, FSSJ, who faithfully and skillfully led the College for 32 years. Her presidency marked one of the most consequential eras in Hilbert’s history; one that reshaped the campus, strengthened academic offerings, and broadened access to Catholic higher education across Western New York.
Sister Edmunette began her tenure at a time when Hilbert was a small junior college.
Under her leadership, Hilbert became a four-year institution, expanded its facilities dramatically, grew its academic portfolio, and solidified its identity as a Franciscan college committed to service, dignity, and student success.
Transformational
Hilbert through decades of growth, mission expansion, and student-centered innovation
that lifts a student’s future, every tradition rooted in service and compassion bears her fingerprints.”

Among the many milestones realized during her presidency:
• Transition to four-year degree programs, establishing Hilbert as a baccalaureate institution serving the region
• Creation of academic programs that remain signature strengths, including criminal justice, human services, business administration, and forensic science
• Construction and expansion of core campus facilities, including academic buildings, student spaces, residence life capacity, and campus infrastructure improvements
• Establishment of residence halls that helped transform Hilbert from a commuter college into a true residential learning community
• Development and growth of the institution’s Catholic and Franciscan identity, shaping Hilbert’s culture of care, welcome, and holistic formation
• Significant enrollment growth and expanded community presence, positioning Hilbert as a talent pipeline for law enforcement, social services, education, healthcare, and nonprofit leadership
“Hilbert would simply not be the Hilbert we know today without Sister Edmunette,” said Interim President Michael Cornell. “She led with courage, foresight, and unwavering commitment. Every academic building we walk through, every degree program
Sister Edmunette was known for her exceptionally relational leadership. Students often recall her presence at campus events, her handwritten notes of encouragement, and her willingness to listen. Whether navigating periods of expansion or moments of challenge, her compass was always the same: do what serves students, honor the Sisters’ mission, and strengthen Hilbert’s future.
In addition to her administrative leadership, Sister Edmunette helped establish Hilbert’s model of student-centered accompaniment, a defining hallmark of the College to this day. She championed the idea that education requires presence, compassion, and belief in the dignity and potential of every learner.
A private funeral mass and burial will be held for Sister Edmunette. In the coming days, we will share details regarding the opportunity for the Hilbert community to gather in celebration Sister Edmunette’s life and legacy.
In the meantime, Hilbert invites alumni, colleagues, friends, and partners to reflect on her enduring example through simple acts of encouragement, service, and care—especially toward those who most need to be seen and supported.

“As we grieve her passing,” President Cornell shared, “we also recognize that her legacy lives each day in the degrees earned, the lives shaped, the communities impacted and, most importantly, in the mission she safeguarded with grace. We will miss her deeply, but we move forward encouraged by her example and determined to advance the work she nurtured so faithfully.”
Hilbert College extends its heartfelt condolences to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, to Sister Edmunette’s family, and to the generations of alumni and colleagues whose lives were lifted by her faithful leadership.
Donations in memory of Sister Edmunette may be made to the Paczesny Family Scholarship at Hilbert College or to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph.
