High Point University:

The Premier Life Skills University When you visit campus and meet President Nido Qubein, you begin to understand how and why HPU’s total transformation occurred so rapidly.

T

he time is now. The person is you. High Point University President Dr. Nido Qubein shares these words in his Life Skills Seminar, which he teaches for all freshmen. In many ways, these words have framed the story of his life and of his leadership at HPU. Qubein came to America with little money and little knowledge of English. He went on to graduate from college, build businesses, become a consultant to global corporations and serve on multiple national boards. He’s also delivered more than 7,000 presentations globally to business leaders and is recognized as a life skills leader. Then, in 2005, he became president of High Point University. “When I arrived, higher education was at a turning point, and so was HPU,” says Qubein. “There was deferred maintenance with facilities in need of new life. Many institutions nationally struggled to define what made them distinctive. It was time for a wakeup call. I knew it

was time to move HPU from an ocean of sameness to a much smaller pool of distinction.” The last 15 years have brought total transformation to HPU, from academic programs and campus facilities, to the culture of the institution. Here’s a glimpse: HPU grew its campus from 90 to 500 acres, increased enrollment by 250%, went from three to 10 academic schools, hired hundreds of new faculty, opened state-of-the-art learning facilities and student centers, and increased student support services. For example, every freshman at HPU receives a Success Coach to guide them in the transition to college. These growth stats show the outcome of the transformation, but the strategic vision to become The Premier Life Skills University shows you the “why” behind it all. “My focus has always been on creating an institution that focuses on rendering value for our students and their families,” says Qubein. “That’s why we have attracted top

faculty, enhanced academic offerings and created a campus that inspires students to transform their lives in a way that improves the world."

VALUES AND LIFE SKILLS

As Qubein and HPU family members rallied to transform HPU, four pillars emerged as the strategic vision: Academic Innovation, Experiential Learning, Values and Life Skills. New majors were launched, including neuroscience, entrepreneurship, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, engineering, physical therapy and more. Top-level faculty were hired to lead these programs, and impressive facilities where they can be housed were added to campus. Spend no more than 15 minutes on campus, and it’s clear that HPU is committed to academics and experiential learning. Modern science and engineering facilities

are housed on HPU’s $350 million Innovation Corridor, while communication, business, education and other academic facilities are located throughout. These facilities often have grand lobbies that mimic Fortune 500 companies or glass walls like Silicon Valley headquarters. Qubein wants students to be immersed in these environments so that when they land internship and job interviews at major corporations, which they often do, students are already comfortable in these environments. Every corner of campus is a place to learn experientially. The foundational pillars for HPU’s transformation, however, and the ones most distinct from other universities, are values-based learning and premier life skills. That's why American flags fly throughout campus and students hang out in grand spaces like Patriots Plaza, located in the heart of campus.

You’ll find these words from Roy Disney, co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, there: “When your values are clear, making decisions becomes easier.” These words summarize HPU’s approach to values-based living and learning. It’s true that HPU has radically transformed its campus and culture. And it’s true that transformation is continually embraced at HPU. New facilities equipped with innovative technology fill the entire campus. But as Qubein tells parents and students on their earliest visits to campus, HPU is first and foremost grounded in values—hard work, personal initiative, generosity, gratitude, faith, patriotism and more. “Values are everything in a world where technology is advancing at the speed and way in which decisions must be made,” says Qubein. “Parents spend their lives modeling values for their children. When they send their student to a university, they want it to uphold and further those values. And when students choose a university, they want an institution that will serve as an extension of their home.” HPU is that institution for thousands of families across the country, including many of whom have more than one student enrolled at the Premier Life Skills University.

Accolades have been collected along HPU’s journey of exponential growth. The university received a perfect overall score of 100 in the ranking. Supporters of HPU have jokingly remarked, “HPU has nowhere else to grow.” But Qubein’s reply reminds them that HPU isn’t finished. “How you change is how you succeed,” says Qubein. “But achieving your vision doesn’t mean you’ve reached the end of the line. It simply means that you’ve come to a new starting place. While we are proud of the recognition, our goal is not to achieve high rankings. Our goal is to positively impact the hearts and minds of the students who choose to attend HPU. By design, the university’s call to action—‘Choose to be extraordinary’—has no definitive conclusion. Excellence is to be pursued, not obtained.” A new starting place, indeed—this year welcomed the largest group of new students in HPU’s history. More than 1,550 new students joined HPU in fall 2021.

Values-based learning. A phenomenal environment. A family legacy. The beautiful campus, the innovative programs and the state-of-the-art facilities are attention-grabbing; that’s true. But students and parents find more than that. The real reason thousands are flocking to HPU each year lies in the university’s mission and values—the core of HPU’s culture. Myles Markel, from Attleboro, Massachusetts, discovered HPU on U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” list. By November of his senior year in high school, he had visited campus and committed to attending HPU. “The academics are great here, as well as the campus,” said Markel, a neuroscience major. “I was sure I wanted to be here.” His father, Glenn Markel, said the university’s transformation impressed the family. “The academics are impressive, the campus is pristine and his neuroscience major seems like a very dynamic program,” Markel said. “We know HPU is constantly growing, and that’s important to us.”

Caitie Gehlhausen, ’20, connected with Entrepreneur in Residence Marc Randolph, the first CEO of Netflix, and launched her own business when she was a student. She now runs a company that’s all about strong connections. Her product, Socket Lock-It, is a smartphone card holder that is also a phone grip. It’s sold in 3,055 Walmarts and online. She pitched the idea to Randolph when she was a junior. He saw promise in it. They stayed in touch and traded emails as she continued developing the company. A year later, she pitched to him again and got more advice on how to start and run a business. “My goal evolved, and my questions evolved,” says Gehlhausen. “I pitched to Marc twice, and we continued our exchange. He gave me awesome advice. I couldn’t have picked a better place than HPU to pursue my goals.”

Companies invest millions of dollars each year to provide opportunities for employees to attend conferences and engage in professional development. High Point University has built this into the four-year academic journey, compressing time for graduates and helping them stand out from the competition in job and graduate school interviews. That’s why you’ll find industry titans regularly engaging with and mentoring students on HPU’s campus as part of their Access to Innovators Program. When students hear from these leaders, learn their stories, and get feedback on their ideas, they learn that they, too, have the power to accomplish whatever they set their minds to. Why Global Leaders Champion High Point University “One of the things I love about High Point University is their focus on life skills. You need to have skills that can cover you in any circumstance, like being able to speak articulately, to make and defend an argument, to write persuasively, to be comfortable on your feet. You need those skills that are going to work for you regardless of what direction your business takes you or what direction your life takes you.”

“As the co-founder of Apple Computer, I travel the world and meet incredible, intelligent people. That’s why I love my role at High Point University, where I serve as Innovator in Residence. The more time I spend with HPU students and HPU President Nido R. Qubein, the more I appreciate the focus on developing life skills in their students. Transformation at HPU is second nature. That also makes the Webb School of Engineering a great addition to HPU’s excellent academic programs.” –Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence
