Best in Show: William Lyon's 1935 Duesenberg Gurney-Nutting
1935 Duesenberg Wins Best in Show at 15th La Jolla Concours d’Elegance written by David M. Brown Automotive and luxury-lifestyle aficionados enjoyed the 15th-annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance presented by LPL Financial and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty the weekend of April 12–14. At the event, 130 cars competed in 22 classes and for 15 specialty awards on the Concours lawn.
Weekend activities included the La Jolla Tour d’Elegance presented by Porsche San Diego, which toured 200-plus attendees to some of the city’s landmarks, such as the Only Yesterday Museum and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. That evening, 1,000 La Jolla Concours guests enjoyed the Aston Martin San Diego A Night of Steampunk presented by Fraser and Raphael’s Event Works, featuring examples of the great English marque.
William Lyon’s 1935 Duesenberg SJ Gurney-Nutting Speedster won Best of Show and the Phillip Wichard Trophy for Excellence in Design.
All proceeds benefit the La Jolla Historical Society. The featured marque was Cadillac. Aaron and Valerie Weiss were presented with the Most Outstanding Pre-War award for their 1931 Cadillac V-16. And, the LPL Summit Best of Marque was McKeel Hagerty’s 1931 Cadillac V-16.
“The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is a recognition of the care and passion by which classic automobiles are preserved and restored and celebrates the engineering and innovativeness by which they were built,” says Heath Fox, executive director of the La Jolla Historical Society.
Bentley, celebrating its 100th anniversary, was represented by cars from each decade of the past century. Joe and Deborah Harding won the Chairman’s Award with their 1929 Bentley Speed Six. For Bentleys, 1970-2010, Kenneth Woolcott’s 2010 Bentley Azure T placed first.
“The quality of the restored and preserved cars at the 2019 La Jolla Concours was unparalleled in the history of the event, and a turnout of 130 high-quality Concours cars, plus 80 entries in the Motor Car Classic, made for a special weekend for the attendees and participants,” he adds. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back to La Jolla in 2020 for another world-class experience the weekend of April 17–19!”
The Most Outstanding Post-War car was Henrik Jorst’s 1951 Maserati A6G. Also on Sunday, the La Jolla Motor Car Classic at the Concours displayed automobiles for the public along La Jolla Village roadways. Volume XVI, Number 05
