New FREE Recycling App Derry City and Strabane District Council have launched a new, free recycling app with lots of handy features and information on waste and recycling needs.

As an added incentive, users who download the app will be automatically entered into a draw for a tablet or eco goodies to help people reduce their waste and live in a way that’s kinder to the planet.

It has been created as part of the EU-funded project, EMERGREEN, which aims to improve technology to help people live more sustainably and will replace the Bin-ovation app which currently exists.

The app will cover a range of issues and topics, including reminders about which bin to leave out each week, information on what can be recycled, and all the details on opening times for Council’s recycling centres.

It can be downloaded on Google Play or i0S and includes handy features like calendar reminders for bin collections and push notifications from the Council if there are any recycling service changes in your area.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, said the app will be a fantastic and useful tool for lots of people.

“I’m delighted that after a lot of hard work behind the scenes we are now launching this app for public use.

“We can all be guilty of getting mixed up with which bin goes out each week or with knowing which colour of bin our different waste goes into, and this app is such a handy way for people to address those issues as well as making use of the many other features.

“As well as all that, there’s a chance at winning a tablet just by downloading the app, so make sure you get onto your App Store and look for the Derry Strabane recycling app!”

“Users will also be able to get local recycling location information and online bookings can be made. There is also a Report Fly Tipping tab and bulky waste collection can be booked via the app too.

Council’s Waste Services Manager, Nicola McCool, added: “People in Derry and Strabane are becoming more and more eco conscious and we hope that this app will be a handy tool to help them live more sustainably.

MISS SHINING LIGHT Now in its 3rd year of Live competition, Miss Shining Light goes from strength to strength. A Northern Ireland-based pageant, it was created with Mental Health Awareness at its forefront. So far, it has crowned 20 Queens over 9 titles, crowned its first 3 Kings, and raised a whopping £30,000 for Mental Health charities in Northern Ireland, including ME4MENTAL and Foyle Search & Rescue.

Directed by former Mrs Ireland 2018, Jennifer Taylor, Shining Light continues to grow and in 2023/23 introduces a Classic and Curve section to their range of titles. The pageant was tailored for beginners to the pageant world, giving them a taste of the glittertastic world, minus the sometimesdaunting aspects.

With no face-to-face interviews, no swimwear round, no dance routines, and no speaking on stage, it was tailored to be fully inclusive of size, age, disability, or anything else seen as a barrier to entering a pageant.

Queens of this system continue to flourish going on to win other titles and compete internationally.

Shining Light was founded in 2018 as an online fundraiser by Jennifer Taylor who at the time, held the title of Mrs Ireland 2018. The initial online competition saw 25 people enter and two titles (Little Miss Shining Light and

Miss Shining Light) were offered to entrants. Entrants had to submit a picture of themselves and were judged on their response to the question, “What does Mental Health mean to me?” £250 was raised for local Mental Health Charity ME4MENTAL, and its subsequent success led Jennifer to creating a ‘live’ version of the event in 2019.

The 2020 Grand Final was postponed due to COVID but finally took place on 5th March 2022, in the Everglades Hotel in DerryLondonderry, raising £16,500 for Foyle Search & Rescue. There was also will be a male award/crown/ title for Mental Health, named The Emmette Dillon Mental Health Champion, as a memorial to Jennifer’s friend who lost his life to suicide in 2021 and was a very established figure in the modelling and pageant world.

Plans for the pageant that started so small, have now taken off and there are plans afoot to host an Australian competition as a Miss Shining Light International Title was launched in 2022.

Our mains were simply exquisite!

Clooney Review There aren’t many hidden jewels in terms of restaurants in the City Of Derry, but 68Clooney is definitely one of them!

the staff were during the whole dining experience. They offered excellent knowledge of the menu and produce as well as a very welcoming and friendly approach. Our server in particular was delightful.

This stunning eatery is located in the Best Western Whitehorse Hotel and boasts a stunning interior with poignant statement pieces placed throughout for visual pleasure and aesthetic. One notable centrepiece being the large blossom tree which is situated in the main restaurant with long branches draping elegantly adding a sense of nature and texture to the setting.

The value for money on the current menu at 68Clooney is excellent. You are getting a fine dining experience in a beautifully located setting with variety and choice for everyone.

We found there to be a lovely selection on offer, all of which accommodates various levels of palette and food intolerances although we don’t particularly have any.

The relaxed dining experience is enhanced beautifully by eloquently played classical music by the pianist live in the restaurant. Such a relaxed and calming ambience.

We must take the opportunity to note how attentive, pleasant and helpful

To start, I opted for the breaded mushrooms with garlic aioli dip which

was presented on a beautiful summer salad. This option was delicious and light which was pleasant given that we had previously been given a demitasse of the delicious soup of the day. My guest enjoyed a sumptuous portion of the ‘Hot Wings’ which indeed did live up to the name.

These wings most definitely aren’t for the faint hearted but they are very generous in portion and can be enjoyed by spice enthusiasts and the adventurous diner.

I enjoyed the grilled chicken supreme which was beautifully cooked and served with vegetables, a delicious gratin potato and creamy rich sauce. My guest had the fillet steak which was cooked to perfection in his liking and again with delicious sides including the temptingly delicious garlic potatoes and onion rings.

Moving on to dessert, which is usually my favourite part of any dining experience, but in this instance… I was blown away. We

had been eyeballing the various dessert items making their way out to other diners throughout the evening, to the point where it became incredibly difficult to make a choice on ordering.

The colours, the presentation, the variety are all to be commended on this dessert menu. My guest opted for the sticky toffee pudding which was served with delicious vanilla bean ice cream and thoroughly enjoyed. I opted for the coconut milk panna cotta which was just breath-taking in appearance. The colours on one dish were inventive and highly creative by the chef. The

panne cotta was delicious in taste and incredibly light. This was of course not presented alone, there was a delicious accompaniment of home made shortbread, strawberries, cream and edible florals. I really, really enjoyed this dish. It was remarkable.

It’s abundantly clear that the level of creativity, selection of produce and skillset of the entire kitchen team is second to none.

There is no corner left unturned when it comes to the execution and offering of each course and with the additional value for money, this is a must for anyone wanting a beautiful meal from start to finish.

DERRY CHOIR FESTIVAL IS BACK WITH A BANG FOR ITS TENTH FESTIVAL THIS OCTOBER The City of Derry International Choir Festival is planning a full return to singing this October as it prepares for its tenth edition of the award-winning festival.

Organisers have been receiving entries from choirs across the world for their International Competition and singing groups of all shapes and sizes across the UK and Ireland have signed up in their droves to take part in the 5-day feast of competitions, concerts, pop-up performances and workshops.

The festival will open with a spectacular gala concert on Wednesday 19 October in the Millennium Forum with a Festival Chorus made up of singers from across Derry and the Northwest. The choir will perform the epic Carmina Burana by Carl Orff alongside Northern Ireland’s premier symphony orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, led by esteemed opera conductor Gabriel Bebeșelea.

Soloists for the performance will include Derry’s own operatic sensation, Laura Sheerin, internationally-renowned tenor Benito Rodriguez and rising star baritone Omar Lara, from the Opera Studio Beckmann, Mexico.

Rehearsals are set to begin for Festival Chorus at the end of June and the festival is inviting registration from those who love to sing and would like to be part of this exciting Opening Gala Concert celebration.

Artistic Director, Dónal Doherty, commented “We’re back, and what an opening night of

fireworks we have in store. The first magnificent chords of Carmina Burana are surely some of the most recognisable sounds in the whole choral repertoire. I cannot wait to hear the thrilling sound of the 100-voice festival chorus combined with the full forces of the Ulster Orchestra and the exciting international line-up of soloists, all led by the brilliant young Romanian conductor Gabriel Bebeșelea. There cannot be a more fitting opening to this, our tenth festival. It promises to be a night of joy and celebration - it should not be missed, so put a big star on Wednesday 19 October in the diary now!”

DÓNAL DOHERTY AWARDED HONOURARY MBE FOR SERVICES TO MUSIC

We are overjoyed and honoured to announce that our Artistic Director, Dónal Doherty, has been awarded an honorary MBE for his services to music in Northern Ireland.

Since the prestigious honour was announced, hundreds of heartfelt and warm messages of congratulations have been sent to Dónal from all over the world, testament to the fact that his lifetime devoted to excellence in music and his inspirational contribution to choral singing have travelled far beyond the walls of the city and touched the lives of so many people, far and wide.

Dónal commented, "I'm absolutely delighted to accept this award on behalf of everyone involved in the City of Derry International Choir Festival, members of Codetta choirs and the many wonderful colleagues I've worked with over the years in connection with music and musicmaking. It has been and continues to be a privilege to share the joy and transformative power of music and singing with so many."

Dónal is the Artistic Director of Codetta Choirs. His love of choral music was nurtured as a member of the Schola Cantorum in St Finian’s College Mullingar and later at University College Dublin.

He was appointed Head of Music Services for the Western Region of the Education Authority of Northern Ireland in 1996 and assumed responsibility for both the Western and Southern Regions in 2011.

He served as Director of Music at St. Eugene’s Cathedral from 1982 - 1996 and, in 2013, was appointed Director of the Music Promise initiative, a key element of the inaugural UK City of Culture programme in Derry.

In the same year, he founded the City of Derry International Choir Festival.

A joyous celebration of all that choral singing has to offer, the annual festival presents concerts by worldrenowned vocal groups, competitions for choirs, workshops and educational events for singers and conductors, and community concerts and choral trails in landmark locations across Derry and the surrounding area.

Since its inception the festival has engaged over 10,000 singers from six continents across the world.

His international prize-winning choir Codetta was formed in 2001. Since then, they have earned a reputation for choral excellence including the top award of the Fleischmann Trophy at the Cork International Choral Festival in 2017. Codetta have given many concerts both nationally and internationally, including performances in the United States, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland.

Past highlights include two Prom performances in the Royal Albert Hall in London, Last Night of the Proms

in Belfast and special guest choir for the 2015 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which was broadcast live to an audience in excess of 8 million viewers. In May 2016, Codetta performed with Barry Douglas and Camerata in the Kennedy Centre in Washington.

The choir performs regularly with the Ulster Orchestra, most notably in recording the soundtrack to the film ‘Lost Lives’ and as part of the City of Derry International Choir Festival in performances of Brian Irvine’s Anticlockwise, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man and Anton Bruckner’s Mass No.2 in E Minor in 2019.

Current initiatives include both the ground-breaking North Belfast Youth Choir programme and the Codetta Junior and Youth Choirs in Derry, which were launched in September 2017.
