Messagefromtheheadteacher

Firstly, may I say a hugethank you to those people who stopped and offered help when my old, tired Volvo stopped dead in the middle of Starkholmes Road the other evening. It’s not always ideal for a shy person like me to be such a recognisable face around Matlock, but on this occasion I was totally taken aback at the number of people who stopped and said, ‘can we help, Mr Marsh?’. Thank to you all, especially the person who went to the local garage to summon help and the wonderful member of staff who gave me a lift all the way back to Chesterfield, even stopping to pick my kids up from their mum’s on the way. We are Highfields indeed. I hope one day I can repay your kindness.

OnTuesdaynightstaffweretrainingtogetherinstrategiessuchaspositive framing. Positiveframing(PF) is one of the techniques we are mastering this year in our efforts to further promote lessons which are quiet, happy, effective and positive. Teachers who don’tuse PF will tend to pick out a student who is not complying and say ‘why haven’t you got your pen out yet?’. Those, however, who do use PF will find someone doing the right thing and reinforce that behaviour perhaps saying, ‘well done, Harry, only a few seconds into the lesson and you already have your pen out’. It’s a subtledifference but cancontributetoakinder, more positiveclassroomethoswhich isfarmorelikely to result in learning.

Do youlikeLidl? Ido.I likethewayyougetdifferent stuffonoffer. Sometimes I liketotrysomething I’ve never had before. Like the other day I tried this stuff in a tin which I think is popular with Polish people. When I started this paragraph there was a definite reason for my telling you this but now I can’t remember what it was so I’ll just end the paragraph here.

This week I met with my student focus groups to discuss discrimination and how it may exist at Highfields. This was inspired by Black History Month and its tagline ‘dig deep, look closer, think bigger’. Digging deeper with these students I got into some really fascinating and revealing conversations. We moved through discrimination due to race and discussed also homophobia and misogynism. The discussion about misogynism centred on the current influence of a YouTuber whose name I won’t mention here (he needs no further publicity as far as I can see). On Monday I will report back to the senior team on how we need to change in response to these discussions.

I spent loads of time in Business lessons as part of a deep dive this week. Tons to celebrate - not least the way in which teachers are responding the current torrid climate in the markets.

My cat is not well. Anyway - I’ve run out of time.

a marvellous weekend!

HighfieldsSchool Issue04: 7 October2022 Newsletter Bethebestyoucan - 7Schoolsportandsportsleadersnews Mrs Allen, School Sports Co-ordinator Judo Some great warm-ups took place last Friday in the year 11 judo session. Coach Andy certainly engages the students in fun sessions. Playmaker OnTuesdayafternoonthePrimarySchoolsBronzeAmbassador/PlaymakerConferencetookplacewith pupils from Tansley and St Giles Primary Schools.

Year 10 sports leaders, Esther S, Sia AB and Jessica W, did an amazing job supporting and leading these year 5/6 pupils, who now take on the role of Bronze Ambassadors in their Primary school and sports leaders mentors. This is a part of a national programme and once they come to secondary school students can progress onto becoming a silver, gold and platinum ambassador.

For the 2022/23 academic year the Highfields Ambassadors are:

Platinum: Year 12/13 - Libby B, Lucy N, Harry B and Sophie H

Gold: Year 11 - Callum C , Laurence H, Sophie C and Isla M

Silver: Year 10 - Esther S, Taylah C, Matteo H, Jenson J, Thomas B, Jessica W and Sia AlB.

We had a fantastic time and coach Max Marshall led the ambassadors in lots of practical activity.

Primary sports evenings

Week 2 of our primary sports evenings took place on Wednesday with pupils from South Darley Primary. Pupils were being led in table tennis and handball activities.

The level 2 year 11 leaders did a great job - well done to Sam C, Hana B, Sophie C and Maia K!
