Newsletter Parents/Carers Update Return to school checklist for families We look forward to welcoming students back to school from 8 March as part of a staggered start and wanted to run through a checklist ready for return: Have you…  Downloaded the Weduc app in advance of school moving to this platform?  Read letters about testing regime and return dates next week?  Given consent should you choose to?  Checked to ensure equipment (eg stationery) is ready?  Checked that all uniform is clean and ready to wear (no uniform required for testing day)?  Reminded children of need to wear extra layers in additional to uniform (classrooms may be chilly)?  Got a supply of face coverings?  Discussed the need to get on the BUS (behaviour kind and considerate, uniform correct, screens out of sight)?

A reminder of year group testing and full return to school dates (see previous emails for timings): Monday 8 March: Sixth form return to school Year 7 attend Starkholmes for testing in form groups Year 11 attend Lumsdale for testing in form groups Tuesday 9 March: Year 11 return to school Year 7 return to school Year 8 attend Starkholmes for testing in form groups Year 10 attend Lumsdale for testing in form groups Wednesday 10 March: Year 8 return to school Year 10 return to school Year 9 attend Lumsdale for testing in form groups Thursday 11 March: Year 9 return to school Bus companies will run their usual service from 8 March (upper site only for return of sixth form students) and resume as normal for both sites from Tuesday 9 March.

Students will continue to follow their week A/B timetables (week commencing 8 March is week B) and the school day timings remain the same (period 1 starts at 8.45am and school finishes between 3.203.30pm depending on year groups).

We are offering grab bags to our students who are eligible for free school meals. Students can collect when they come to school for their test.

Newsletter Along with testing and other protective measures we continue to take, all students and staff are asked to wear face coverings in all areas (unless they are exempt), including classrooms, where social distancing cannot be maintained as a temporary extra measure. If your child requires a face covering exemption lanyard, please contact Mrs Leverton at lleverton@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk – students will then need to collect a lanyard from their year manager and wear this at all times.

On the days where students have PE or dance they are required to come into school wearing their full Highfields PE kit until further notice, as per the arrangements before Christmas.

Remote learning and Covid testing As students in all year groups are being offered testing on different days prior to return to school, teaching week commencing 8 March will be adjusted. Staff will set independent tasks via Show My Homework rather than live lessons in order to accommodate students not present during their usual lesson times. Learning will be checked by teaching staff through task submissions.

All other year group classes will take place as usual with a blended approach to learning where students are not on-site being tested.

Behaviour and standards Upon returning to school, we are working hard to ensure our students recover from the impact of Covid on their education and wellbeing.

We expect all students to behave in a kind and considerate way to reduce conflict, to protect student and staff wellbeing and to allow fun and engaging lessons to go ahead without interruption. Students will be expected to adhere to our Covid risk assessment to keep themselves and other safe, this includes the wearing of masks, following the one way systems and staying within their year group zone.

Students are required to attend school in the correct school uniform to reduce the need for conflict and to indicate a sense of normality, responsibility, pride and commitment to the school ethos. Our uniform stockists are open for online orders and are operating a home delivery or click and collect option for any uniform purchases, should you need to order further supplies. Screen time will be minimised to ensure that students are free to socialise and take physical exercise outdoors whenever possible. Students will be reminded of rules about devices.

Newsletter Traveling to school safely The DfE have issued the following message on how students can travel to and from school safely:  if you live a short distance from school, walk, cycle or scoot to and from school wherever it is possible and safe to do so  avoid sharing a car with anyone outside of your household or support bubble  if you are using public transport to get to school, plan ahead and allow more time for your journey When you are travelling by public or dedicated school transport, don’t forget to:  wear a face covering (unless you are exempt, including if you are aged 11 and under) - it is important you wear them for the entirety of your journey  social distance where possible  wash or sanitise your hands regularly  be considerate to fellow passengers and staff.

Asymptomatic testing information for parents/carers in households with children at school Undertaking regular, rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing helps reduce transmission of the virus.

Parents/carers and other adults in households with children at school or college, who do not have symptoms, can now access regular, rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing. This includes childcare and support bubbles.

Tests are fast, easy and completely free. There are different ways for a household, childcare or support bubble to collect their test to take at home, twice-weekly (see link below):   

through your employer, if they offer testing to employees by collecting a home test kit from a local test site – anyone aged 18 or over can collect 2 packs of 7 tests – school cannot supply kits for parents/carers By ordering a home test kit online – please do not order online if you can access testing through other routes, this frees up home delivery for those who need it most

Newsletter Advice sessions on sleep to support parents/carers Highfields family support workers are running two sessions for parents/carers on sleep, in order to provide support to get children back into routine as school re-opens; one for primary and one for secondary aged students. There is no requirement to book a place, parents/carers can join via the links emailed out earlier this week.

Sleep for Primary Age Children: 15 March from 10-11am via Zoom We have had a number of parents/carers talk to us about sleep difficulties since we went into lockdown. We are running a presentation on hints and tips to help children sleep. We have already trialled this presentation and have received really positive feedback.

The presentation will talk about:  Stages of sleep  Benefits of sleep  Recommended hours of sleep  Common sleep problems  Additional needs and sleep  Covid and sleep Sleep for Secondary Age Children: 17 March from 10-11am via Zoom We are also running a presentation on sleep for secondary school students. This will take place on Wednesday 17 March 2021 at 10am until 11am. Again, there is no need to book, just click the links through the email communications.

Autism telephone support helpline A national support telephone helpline has been set up for parents/carers of children with autism.

Daisy Chain offer a telephone service to enable families to access advice, support and resources. The service is open to young people, adults and families of those affected by neurodevelopmental disorders. The aim is to provide support and services for those who display traits associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing differences, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The service is for those pre, during and post diagnosis.

The team are supporting families with the following:   

responding to enquiries from parents/carers, young people and adults and carrying out telephone appointments sourcing, sharing and sending resource packs to support parents with loneliness and isolation creating and sending bespoke resources and visuals

Newsletter Reminder: Year 11 virtual parents’ evening via Weduc A reminder that our year 11 parent consultation takes place on Tuesday 16 March 2021 from 4-7pm.

The appointment system will be active until Friday 12 March for parents/carers to book appointments.

As you are aware, we are conducting virtual parents’ evenings via Weduc software and ask that you download, register and log in to Weduc at your earliest convenience. Only by accessing the Weduc app can you select an appointment for your child’s subject teachers to review/discuss their progress.

We are prioritising some appointments for students who teachers feel would particularly benefit from a discussion during parents’ evening. Teachers will be booking in appointments for these students before booking is opened to parents/carers. For this reason, you may receive a notification or find that an appointment has been booked for you. Please prioritise this meeting as teachers may be able to offer important and timely advice which will help your child.

Other year group consultation dates will follow once we have reviewed our plans. We have already held telephone appointments with parents / carers of students in year 8 and year 9 who we felt would particularly benefit earlier in the year. However, we will be prioritising year 7 and year 10, who were scheduled to have a parents’ evening later this term.

Advance notice – Lumsdale site access Derbyshire County Council have advised school that there will be a road closure at Upper Lumsdale on the approach road to Highfields School on 29 and 30 March. This does not affect access to Highfields School upper site and students, staff and parents/carers.

Get ready for International Women's Day The past 12 months have been anything but normal thanks to coronavirus. Varying degrees of lockdown, social distancing, job losses and childcare responsibilities have had a huge impact on the lives of women – physically, mentally and financially.

International Women’s Day takes place on Monday (8 March) and to celebrate Sport England are running a five-day takeover of their social media accounts.

Sport England will celebrate some of the women in the This Girl Can community who’ve found the resilience, adaptability and determination to incorporate movement into their lives despite the numerous challenges or setbacks they’ve faced. They are encouraging you to share their posts, get involved in the discussions or highlight stories from women in your own areas who have overcome challenges but been active during the past year.

Sport England has produced a summary report to help you understand the impact of the pandemic on women. Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students.

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/careers

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation.

There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Y11 students – Decisionz Magazine Spring 2021 Please follow the link below to the latest Decisionz magazine. This is a free online publication that provides a wealth of advice and guidance for students who will be looking to take on the next step in their lives post year 11. It provides advice about colleges in Derbyshire, how to make applications to college and sixth forms and information about careers.

Newsletter Learn Live - & Free resources Learn Live have a virtual pod within www.myfuture.org.uk (located within the careers and transitions zone). Within their pod there is a live streaming TV screen – they will be streaming careers linked videos from over 300 organisations continually through the platform, as an example the Royal Navy are streaming currently.

Linked to that within the ‘Welcome to the Careers and Transitions zone’ you will see a ‘more videos’ hotspot with over 150 pre-recorded videos that have been recently added from organisations such as KPMG, Barclays, Mental Health charities etc.

Newsletter Apprenticeships RAF Apprenticeship free webinar for students in years 10-13 'No room for clichés' - Apprenticeships and careers with the RAF 8 March 2-3.30pm To mark International Women's Day on 8 March 2021, the Royal Air Force (RAF) in partnership with Amazing Apprenticeships, will be running an exclusive free webinar for students in year 10-13, to explore the incredible apprenticeship and career opportunities available for them.

The webinar will enable students to hear from ambassadors and recruitment staff within different areas of the RAF, and include an engaging mix of presentations interactive workshops and valuable Q&A opportunities with a panel of RAF Ambassadors.

Newsletter Work experience opportunities Unifrog Unifrog have added over 110 virtual work experience placements to the special opportunities tool as they recognise how difficult it is for students to secure work experience at the moment.

Students can also find paid-for programmes such as InvestIN's Future Doctor Programme.

The virtual WEX placements are all on the special opportunities tool.

You can find the tool in the 'Searching for opportunities' section of the Student homepage.

Once you've selected which country you're from, the tool asks which country you're interested in searching opportunities from. To find all the virtual WEX opportunities, select 'Online/ Worldwide' You then select up to 10 subject areas you're interested in and click through to the longlist. From here, you can create a shortlist of up to 10 opportunities. Your shortlist gives you information about what to expect from the placement and how to apply for it.

Skills Gap - Data Analytics and Tech in Finance Workshops (15-19 year olds) Technology is changing every field, so learning tech and data analysis skills will give students a huge advantage in their future career. Skills Gap is a careers accelerator that arranges short online workshops and courses for students aged 15-19 in areas such as coding, data analytics and data science.

Skills Gap are running a 4.5 day Data Analytics course during the Easter holidays where students will be taught how to use data analysis tools such as Excel and Tableau and receive tuition from a leading industry expert.

A 3 hour ‘tech in finance’ workshop is also being run on Saturday 20 March from 1.30-4.30pm where students will gain insights from industry professionals on how tech is influencing the finance sector, and the tech skills required to progress in a variety of finance roles including investment banking and trading.

Skills Gap have produced a careers guide (see link below). This has been put together to show how technology is changing the future of work and the skills young people need to adapt. We are looking forward to welcoming David Purdue, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. With almost 30 years of experience within the NHS, David qualified from the Nottingham School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1990, working initially within cardiology at Queen’s Medical Centre and before specialising in coronary care at City Hospital. Following a second spell at Queen’s, the local resident set up a number of cardiac nurse-led services before going on to work at the NHS Modernisation Agency. After returning to a patient-facing position in 2004, leading the specialities of Cardiothoracics and Emergency Medicine, David joined what was then Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in October 2008 as Divisional Nurse Manager for Medicine, before rising to the position of Chief Operating Officer in July 2013. David became chief nurse in 2019. David will be sharing his insights into nursing and will be answering your questions.

Warhammer Club returns (remotely)!

Highfields School's weekly Warhammer Club returned on 3 February at 1pm. Sessions last for 30 minutes, and utilise Microsoft Teams, which will allow students to show off their painting skills via video-based chat.

Newsletter Summer exam update for students in Y11 & Y13 The government have confirmed that your grades this summer will be awarded on the basis of teacher assessment. They have asked us to use a wide range of evidence to decide on final grades. This can include work you have already done as well as work that you will do over the coming months. It can include test papers set by the exam boards, as well as other evidence such as coursework, NEAs, tests and other work completed as part of your courses. We are now awaiting further details and thinking about how we could use tests from the exam boards alongside other evidence to ensure that you achieve the fairest possible grades, which reflect all that you have achieved.

When we have worked through the details we will be able to give more information about the arrangements that we will be putting in place in school for awarding your grades. We will be providing you with the opportunities you need to show us what you know, understand and can do through further assessment over the coming months. The crucial thing now is for you to remain as committed to your learning as you have been over the year, including in these past few weeks of remote education. As we have said before this is the thing you are most in control of, and the most important factor in your success.

Remember results will be based on completed and future work, so keep doing your best.

Newsletter Year 12 Frequently Asked Questions We have aimed to answer some questions that year 12 students and parents/carers may have about assessments and help for future decisions.

When will year 12 exams take place this year?

We will be formally assessing year 12 on their learning this year. Normally that has been done at the end of May and beginning of June. This year, the arrangements for year 11 and year 13 are only just emerging. Once the year 11 and 13 arrangements have been sorted, we will be deciding on those for year 12 (and year 10). In the meantime, students should continue to work positively, and know that there will be a chance to show what they have learned in the summer.

What support do students get for making applications to university?

In a normal year, there are several events which we put on in June. These include:  An evening at school, for parents/carers and students, with admissions tutors from several universities who will answer your questions about choosing courses and universities, writing personal statements and what student finance is all about.  Open days which we will take students to, in order to get a taste for different universities. For the last few years we have used the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham Trent. This is a cheap way of getting to places and having a good explore of what is on offer.  UCAS day at school - where we help students to understand the UCAS process, teach about what makes a good personal statement, and get former students to come in and talk about their experiences.  Tutors and the sixth form team will be on hand to guide students through the Personal Statement process.

We will still do these, or their equivalent, one way or another.  So… last year we did an evening via Zoom which covered all the points we normally had at the evening.  Open days were virtual, but we gave tips on how to get the most out of them, and shared experiences from students.  We produced a lot of resources for the UCAS day, and managed to record some equivalent sessions for students to watch.

Is there anything that can help students appear more attractive to competitive university courses? Or anything which can help them to make up their mind?

Summer schools, or their equivalent are always good – and students have been booking onto them.

Most deadlines have now passed, but there will be taster days available. It’s good to try these (one or two – but more than that on school days will means missing too much). Following up some of the opportunities which Mrs Sargeant emails out will also help.

What about work experience, future careers and apprenticeships?

The Unifrog platform is designed to help make informed decisions about the future and has a range of tools. Each student has their own personal account that provides a wide range of information related to their interests and aspirations. The platform helps with searches for apprenticeships and careers, not just university. Key features of the platform include:  Exploring Pathways – personality quizzes, career and subject profiles, MOOCs (these are free courses in lots of subjects that you can take) and webinars  Recording – self-reflection about extracurricular activities and key employability skills  Opportunities – search tools showing live vacancies/courses/placements for apprenticeships, universities (in the UK and abroad), FE, virtual work experience and much more

Applications – tools to help students build applications for a range of pathways (eg, CVs, Personal Statements, Common App Essays)

Students have been given sign-up codes, and so should already be able to access the platform. They login to Unifrog using their email address and password and they can do so from any computer, tablet or smartphone.

Parents/carers have often found it helpful to share the platform and look together at some things with their son or daughter. We have also set up a parent login so that you can use Unifrog as if you were a student yourself, allowing you to support your child throughout the process. The form code has been emailed to parents/carers along with information on the Y12 parent consultation evening (Unifrog website: www.unifrog.org/code) Students can be using Unifrog whenever they like, as can you. But we’ll also set some tasks for them to do which will help give some structure for thinking things through. The tasks will be good for everyone to have a go at, but in particular for students who feel they don’t have a direction and are feeling concerned about that.

We will have an Evening Session on Zoom to help students and parents/carers think through work experience, apprenticeships, careers and future planning. We are currently making sure that the return to school goes as smoothly as possible, but will let you in due course when this evening will take place.

Newsletter Coronavirus guidance Covid-19 lateral flow testing consent on return to school To enable school to remain as safe as possible and detect any cases for those without coronavirus symptoms, students are asked to take Covid-19 lateral flow tests as they return. After an initial programme of three tests in school, students will be provided with two rapid tests to use each week at home.

We have emailed families with a link to the Covid consent form to obtain permission for students to take the lateral flow tests – if you have not yet given consent, please do so via the emailed link issued, or contact info@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk if you require a hard copy form.

Along with the other protective measures we are taking, these tests will help students and staff to remain in school safely. Up to one third of people who have coronavirus experience no symptoms. By testing we will help to stop the virus spread and help to keep our school open as safely as possible.

Testing is voluntary, however, we would encourage everyone to participate in the testing programme to help break transmission links by identifying those who may be carrying the virus unknowingly.

Students and staff will still be allowed in school if consent is not given for testing. However, if a positive case is detected and a child/member of staff has been identified as being in close contact with the person testing positive, they will need to self-isolate at home for 10 days.

If a student or member of staff receives a positive lateral flow test result they will need to self-isolate immediately in accordance with government guidelines. They are no longer required to seek a subsequent PCR test to confirm the initial lateral flow test result.

If a student or member of staff has previously had a positive Covid-19 test they are not required to have any further lateral flow tests for a period of up to 90 days after their original positive results, as they can remain positive for this period.

Newsletter Advice if students (and staff) display symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) If your child develops symptoms of Covid-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 10 days (this replaces the previous 14 day period as announced on 14.12.20). This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken within the home.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.

Symptoms The most common symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) are recent onset of:  a new continuous cough(this is defined as coughing a lot for more than an hour, or have three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours),  a high temperature (above 37.8C),  a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) For most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.

How to stop Covid-19 spreading There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with Covid-19 – Do:  wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds  use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available  wash your hands as soon as you get home

If students have these symptoms (without the temperature, continuous cough or loss of smell symptom), then they don’t need to have a test.

The decision as to whether or not they come to school or stay at home should be taken as you would do in normal times (they are not required to stay off school).

Where a child has a sickness bug, as always, they must be kept off school for 48 hours.

School response to notification of positive Covid-19 cases We required the following key information from parents/carers when notifying school of a positive Covid-19 test:  the date symptoms started  the date the test was taken  the date the result was received  the names of ‘close contacts’ of the student during social times at school and any students they have spent time with as close contacts after school  the number of the bus if the student caught a bus to/from school.

A close contact is:  a person who has had face to face contact within one metre of the individual testing positive  contact within one metre for one minute or longer without face to face contact  someone who has been within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes  a person who has travelled in a small vehicle with the individual testing positive, or near them on a large vehicle or plane.

School then checks lesson seating plans to work out how many close contacts there are from lessons, identifying any students who have sat within 2m of the individual testing positive in any lessons during their contagious time prior to developing symptoms. Individual classrooms are then checked manually to see where the desks are and how much room there is.

Once this information is obtained school contacts Public Health England schools helpline who take the details. If there is only one case in a year group and if school are confident we have identified all close contacts we only need to ask those students to stay off school and to self-isolate for 14 days.

School informs the Local Education Authority and the school nursing team.

If there is more than one case in a year group, or there is uncertainty around close contacts, then school receives a call back from East Midlands Public Health. They go through all of the information, contact parents/carers where there are positive cases and review the school’s risk assessment. East Midlands Public Health then give school advice on what steps to take next.

It is really important that parents/carers keep children in their home if they test positive or are asked to self-isolate.



It is key that parents/carers know where their children are and who they are with so close contacts can easily be traced.



Unless there is a really urgent situation (such as urgent first aid) staff need to keep 2m away from students and other staff so they are not classed as close contacts.



It is key to understand that if you are a close contact and take a test, even if the result is negative, you have to self-isolate for the full 10 days.

Public Health provide school with a template latter to send home to all parents/carers and a different letter for parents/carers of close contacts. We take on board all advice that Public Health give us.

Newsletter Weduc home / school communication tool Weduc is designed to improve communication between parents/carers and school. The platform allows notifications to be sent directly to mobiles of parents/carers with all messages and communication from school and where parents’ evening appointments can be made. It also allows access to information on your child(ren), eg details of behaviour, student timetables, reports and teachers to name a few, all in one easily accessible, user friendly place.

If you have not yet had the chance to enrol with Weduc, please do so as soon as possible to avoid missing important messages from school. We have sent out email notifications with individual enrolment codes to all parents/carers with details on how to download the Weduc app onto your phone/tablet and how to access the site through the internet. Please contact your child’s year manager if you require a new enrolment message to be sent.

We will be moving to Weduc from 1 April 2021. All communication will then be sent via Weduc and our existing communication system will no longer be operational.

When we need to send you an important alert, the Weduc app will flash up a notice on your phone screen - particularly useful when we have to notify you of emergency school closures, detentions and absences. We strongly recommend that you use this app and enable the notification system to ensure you do not miss any important information communicated home. If you are unable to operate the Weduc app you will need to log in to the Weduc website to check for messages.

Weduc FAQs: I can’t find my email enrolment how do I access Weduc?

Contact the school office and they will organise for an enrolment email to be sent to you directly.

How can I access Weduc?

You can access Weduc by:  downloading the app onto your smart phone or tablet. You can download it from the App Store or Google Play.  logging in via the Weduc website at: https://app.weduc.co.uk/ It is easy to use the new Weduc tool once you have downloaded it: Weduc via the App  Step 1 - Once downloaded, open the app and click the enrol link at the bottom of the login screen.  Step 2 - You will have been sent a unique enrolment code by letter and message from the school office - please keep this safe as you will need it to set up your account. If you have not received a code, please contact the school office .  Step 3 - Enter your unique enrolment code and follow the in-app, step by step instructions to complete your registration.

Why can’t I reply to the emails from Weduc?

If you only get emails from Weduc then you will not be able to reply to them. They are notifications of a message that is waiting for you within Weduc, and you would only be able to reply to it there.

The 'sysadmin@weduc.co.uk' is a Weduc system address and is not monitored.

If you choose to use the Weduc app then you will be able to reply to messages within it.
